The 2022 Tour of Britain kicks off on Sunday, with riders racing from Aberdeen to the Isle of Wight over eight gruelling days.

Tom Pidcock, who won Olympic gold for Great Britain in the cross-country mountain biking in 2020, is among the hopefuls. He will be riding for Ineos Grenadiers.

Among those challenging him are Israel-Premier Tech’s Dylan Teuns, a fierce Belgian rider making his debut for his new team, and Austrian national champion Felix Großschartner, representing Bora–Hansgrohe.

Here is the full route and schedule for the race.

When is the 2022 Tour of Britain?

The Tour of Britain takes place over eight days, with one stage per day.

What is the full route?

Stage one – Aberdeen to Glenshee Ski Centre (181.3km)

Route description: Not only will this stage feature an entirely new route compared to last year’s finale in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, it will also include the first ever opening day summit finish in modern race history. The Old Military Road climb from Auchallater to Glenshee Ski Centre measures 9.1km long, with the final five kilometres averaging a gradient of 4.8 per cent.

Stage two – Hawick to Duns (175.2km)

Route description: Hawick, famous for its knitwear and the first whisky distillery to open in the region since 1837, will be the starting point of stage two. The race’s ninth visit to the Borders will feature a mix of roads old and new to the event, before a first-ever finish in Duns. The stage winner will be crowned in the shadow of the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum, which celebrates the two-time Formula 1 world champion who lived nearby.

map

Stage three – Durham to Sunderland (163.6km)

Route description: History will be made when riders roll out in the shadow of the city’s famous cathedral: Durham has never previously hosted a stage start or finish in a professional edition of the Tour of Britain. Stage three’s route will initially head west, taking the peloton through the North Pennines AONB, before heading back through County Durham and into Sunderland. The route will weave past some of the city’s beautiful green spaces and through communities on its approach to the finish line outside of Sunderland’s new City Hall, which forms part of a £500m development in the city.

Stage four – Redcar to Duncombe Park, Helmsley (149.5km)

Route description: The start will be the first time the borough of Redcar and Cleveland has hosted the Tour of Britain, while the finish marks the race’s return to North Yorkshire in 13 years. Popular seaside towns such as Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Whitby will be raced through before the route heads into the North York Moors National Park. The unforgiving final 30km of this 149.5km stage feature the climbs of Carlton Bank (2km long, 9.8 per cent average gradient) and Newgate Bank (2km long, 6 per cent average gradient) before descending into the finish at Duncombe Park, one of Yorkshire’s finest historic houses and estates.

Teams taking part Bardiani CSF Faizanè Bingoal Pauwels Sauces WB BORA-Hansgrohe  Cara Rural – Seguros RGA Global 6 Cycling  Great Britain Cycling Team  Human Powered Health  Ineos Grenadiers Israel-Premier Tech  Movistar Team  Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling  Saint Piran  Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise  Team DSM Team Qhubeka  Trinity Racing  Uno-X Pro Cycling Team  Wiv SunGod

Stage five – West Bridgford to Mansfield (186.8km)

Route description: Stage five will start and finish in the same places – West Bridgford and Mansfield – as it did four years ago, albeit with a different route that takes in Cotgrave, Gedling, Southwell, Retford and Worksop. Riders will then head into Mansfield via Clumber Park and Sherwood Forest. This will be the only stage of the 2022 Tour with less than 2,000m of climbing.

Stage six – Tewkesbury to Gloucester (170.9km)

Route description: With the start and finish locations separated by a little over 10 miles, fans will easily be able to attend both on race day, which will further add to the atmosphere at this free-to-watch sporting spectacle. Stage six’s route will head into the Cotswolds before approaching the finish by the historic Gloucester Docks via South Gloucestershire.

Stage seven – West Bay to Ferndown (175.9km)

Route description: Dorset’s natural beauty – including the Jurassic Coast Unesco World Heritage Site that runs through the county – will be showcased to the world as riders travel from West Bay, known for its striking golden cliffs, to Ferndown on Saturday 10 September. Stage seven will run parallel with the West Dorset Heritage coast before passing through Dorchester, West Lulworth and Corfe Castle. The route heads inland towards Wareham, Milton Abbas and Wimborne Minster and loops round into the heart of Ferndown town centre.

Stage eight – Ryde to The Needles, Isle of Wight (148.9km)

Route description: Stage eight promises unforgettable for riders and fans alike, owing to the spectacular 148.9km route from Ryde to The Needles. Not only will the route showcase the island to a worldwide TV audience – its county town of Newport, as well as the popular tourist locations of Cowes, Sandown, Shanklin, Totland, Ventnor and Yarmouth all feature – fans will be able to catch the race in multiple locations owing to the way it loops around the Isle. The final 20km will take the peloton along the stunning Military Road, which offers breathtaking panoramic views out across the English Channel, towards The Needles Landmark Attraction. This year’s race culminates with a 2km climb up to Tennyson Down, the final 400m of which average a gradient of 9.6 per cent, making it the toughest ending to any Tour of Britain in modern history.

The Tour of Britain has evolved into one of the toughest cycling races in the world, attracting some of the sport's biggest stars. This year, all eyes will be on 23-year-old Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers). Having won Olympic gold in Tokyo and won a stage at this year's Tour de France, he's expected to leave his mark on the 2022 Tour of Britain too.

The race started in Aberdeen, Scotland, before snaking its way down to Hawick, crossing the border into Durham and taking in Redcar. Stage 5 – the longest ride of the 2022 Tour de Britain – kicks off in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire. Stage 6 rolls through Gloucestershire and features three sprints. Stage 7 starts in West Bay on the English coast, and will test the riders with two brutal climbs: Whiteways Hill and Okeford Hill.

The finale stage – stage 8 – takes place on the Isle of White. It's a 148.9km run from Ryde to The Needles, culminating in a final climb with a gradient of 9.6 percent, making it one of the hardest climbs of any Tour of Britain.

What is the Tour of Britain?

The Tour of Britain is an annual, multi-stage cycling event. It is the biggest road cycling event in the country and is, in effect, Britain’s equivalent of the Tour de France.

It’s risen in popularity among spectators as interest in road cycling itself has grown, and thousands of people regularly turn out to watch the Tour as it passes through.

When was the first Tour of Britain?

The first Tour of Britain took place in 1945, when it was known as the Victory Cycling Marathon - which was held to celebrate the victory over fascism in the Second World War .

It has taken various forms and names (chosen by its sponsors) over the years - including the Milk Race, Kellogg Tour and PruTour.

However, the modern Tour of Britain only started in 2004, when it was revived five years after the last PruTour event was held.

When is the Tour of Britain 2022?

The Tour of Britain 2022 will take place from September 4th-11th.

Where can I watch the Tour of Britain 2022?

If you can’t make it to watch any of the 2022 Tour of Britain in person, full coverage of the race will be televised live on ITV4 .

The full detailed route has not been revealed yet but the Tour will visit the following places:

  • Nottinghamshire
  • Gloucestershire
  • Isle of Wight

What’s the Tour of Britain 2022 route?

The 2022 Tour of Britain’s first stage will start where the 2021 Tour finished off - in Aberdeen - on Sunday, September 4th.

From there, it will head south through Scotland on September 5th in its second stage, before reaching north-east England and Sunderland for its third stage on September 6th.

Its fourth stage will take in Redcar, Cleveland and North Yorkshire on September 7th.

Then, the Tour’s fifth stage will take in Nottinghamshire – which will be the first time the Tour has been there in four years - on September 8th.

After that, there’ll be three more stages: stage six in Gloucestershire on September 9th, stage seven in Dorset on September 10th, and the eighth and final stage on the Isle of Wight on September 11th.

Full details of the 2022 Tour of Britain route will be released in April.

A national stagerace which really crosses a country from north to south!  Even if that will bring quite a lot of disruption, when it comes to transfers, to the Movistar Team and all squads competing at the 2022 Tour of Britain, it’s something to applaud that the organisers are making such an effort to cover most of their territory in just eight days of racing, starting in the Scottish mountains and ending in a not-so-usual place for cycling, the Isle of Wight.

All stages will contain, with the only major exception being day five to Mansfield -Thursday 8th- as a clear bunch sprint chance, a lumpy course with 2,000 to 2,500m elevation gain per day , which offers chances to the breakaways, allrounders and most importantly punchy classics specialists (Van der Poel, Alaphilippe and Van Aert have been the most recent winners). The race starts, however, with a mountain-top finish   in Glenshee (Sunday 4th), over a final 3km at almost 6% , which should start defining the GC outcome.

The other stages which could potentially make things difficult for the fastest riders are three. Monday 5th, the peloton will tackle several little climbs en route to Duns. Wednesday 7th, it will be the turn of the demanding  Carlton Bank KOM (2km at 10%) with 27km to go, plus the non-categorized Newgate Bank (700m at 9%) just 9km from the finish in Helmsley.  And Friday 9th, which will see the riders take on Crawley Hill and another non-rated ascent into the last 25km towards Gloucester. The final day’s finish in The Needles is also an uphill one.

Tour of Britain 2022 Information

The Tour of Britain kicks off on September 4 offering the peloton a 1,352.1km of racing across eight stages that concludes on September 11 at The Needles.

Rich in history, it is a prominent stage race that has its origins back in 1945. However, the current version of the Tour of Britain, not organised by SweetSpot, began in 2004.

The multi-day event was registered at the 2.1-level but moved up to the 2.HC status in 2014, and then 2.Pro ranks in 2020, though cancelled that year due to COVID-19. While the event has never made the jump up to WorldTour, it remains as one of the most prestigious events of Great Britain.

Champions of the modern Tour of Britain include last year's winner Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel (2019), Julian Alaphilippe (2018), Lars Boom (2011 and 2017), Steven Cummings (2016) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (2009 and 2015), Bradley Wiggins (2013), and Dylan van Baarle (2014).

Tour of Britain Contenders

Positioned annually in September, the Tour of Britain offers many riders an opportunity to contest late-season stage racing and potentially to prepare for the UCI Road World Championships, which are held in Australia from September 17-25.

Defending champion, Wout van Aert and his team Jumbo-Visma are not scheduled to compete in this year's event, however, the eight-day race will feature 18 teams, including five WorldTour teams Ineos Grenadiers , Movistar , Team DSM , Israel-Premier Tech , and Bora-Hansgrohe .

The organisers of the event are yet to confirm the official start list, but they have revealed several key riders that will be participating.

In his final season before retirement, Australia's Richie Porte will lead Ineos Grenadiers at this year's Tour of Britain. Belgium's Dylan Teuns will lead the GC hopes for his team Israel-Premier Tech. British Cycling will also field a national team led by Connor Swift .

Tour of Britain most successful riders

  • Edvald Boasson Hagen (2009 and 2015) won more than one edition of the modern Tour of Britain, and Lars Boom won twice (2011 and 2017).
  • Wout van Aert won the most recent edition in 2021
  • Julian Alaphilippe and Mathieu van der Poel won the race in 2018 and 2019.
  • Mark Cavendish (10) has won the most stages of the race, followed by Boasson Hagen (8) and André Greipel (7).

What is the race route?

Stage seven is due to start from West Bay’s Esplanade at 11am on Saturday, September 10. The 109-mile stage will see cyclists ride past the famous golden cliffs of West Bay near Bridport and travel on the Coast Road and through Weymouth, Dorchester , West Lulworth and Corfe Castle before heading inland.

Riders will also take in the beautiful views of Dorset's rolling countryside cycling towards Wareham, Milton Abbas and Wimborne Minster. Whiteway Hill, near East Lulworth, Bulbarrow Hill and Okeford Hill will all feature along the route, before concluding at Ferndown’s Victoria Road. The prestigious event will be broadcast on TV to a huge audience showing our stunning county.

The event is expected to finish on Victoria Road in the centre of Ferndown between 3.01pm and 3.51pm.

When and where are the sprint races?

Three ŠKODA King of the Mountains climbs will also see riders battle for points towards the climbers’ jersey with all three falling within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The first at Daggers Gate above West Lulworth, is close to the world-famous limestone arch at Durdle Door, while the second, Whiteways Hill, sits on a ridge above the famous ‘ghost’ village of Tyneham with spectacular views in all directions. The final ŠKODA King of the Mountains climb of the stage is Okeford Hill with 55 kilometres of racing to go.

Dorset Council has confirmed that a rolling road closure will be enforced on the stage route. This means roads on and around the race route will be closed to traffic by Police escort vehicles.

Closures will be in place for approximately 30 minutes to allow the race to pass safely. To make sure the route is safe for the public and competitors, additional areas have been identified that will be closed slightly longer in duration to the main rolling closure such as West Bay and Ferndown .

Motorists are being advised that if they may wish to travel to these areas using alternate means, such as cycling or public transport, as parking will be restricted. Timings of road closures and alternative routes will be published on the Dorset Council website closer to the event.

What to do if you want to watch the race

tour of britain 2022 itv4

People are encouraged to watch beside the route or gather at the start point at West Bay or finish point at Ferndown. The Team Paddock at the start line will allow racegoers to get autographs and photographs, as well as see the latest bike equipment.

The route is marked with yellow advanced warning signs in the run-up to the Tour of Britain and people are warned not to park on the route on the day. Vehicles may have to be removed if necessary.

Spectators are also being advised to stay away from the road in order to remain safe. A spokesman for Dorset Council said: "Please keep children back from the edge of the road and put animals on a lead, away from the roadside.

"Riders pass by very fast, and while we encourage support, please keep flags, objects and photography equipment out of the road. Remember, taking selfies is fun, but turning your back on the race is never a good idea. Please face the oncoming riders and race convoy at all times."

The Tour of Britain is escorted along the route by trained police officers and escort motorcyclists. If you are asked to stop by an officer, please listen carefully and obey their instructions.

How can I watch Tour of Britain on TV?

The Tour of Britain will be taking in a number of sites around Dorset

ITV4 will continue to broadcast live flag-to-flag coverage of every stage and nightly highlights show, allowing fans in the UK to watch wherever they are. The race will also be shown in over 150 countries worldwide, thanks to the event's partnerships with Eurosport and the Global Cycling Network.

Mick Bennett, Tour of Britain race director, has said that not only will cyclists be able to take in the wonderful views, but the terrain will be a good challenge for the cyclists. "The eyes of the cycling world will be on Dorset come Saturday, September 10 and I know that both the world-class riders competing and the huge TV audience the Tour of Britain attracts will be blown away by the sheer beauty of the county.

"But more than that, the challenging terrain will make for a thrilling day of racing, with the battle for the stage victory in Ferndown likely to be fierce!"

One of the top cycling events in the United Kingdom has to be the Tour of Britain. It may be United Kingdom’s version of Tour de France, but there is more to it. Since it is a revamp in 2004, the Tour of Britain has enjoyed growing popularity amongst the masses. It is not surprising that broadcasters are facing intense competition to secure rights for Tour of Britain TV coverage.

ITV will be the broadcasters for the Tour of Britain 2024. The route for this race was unveiled back in February. Twenty teams – including several UCI World Teams – will be taking part in the race, which begins on September 4 in Glasgow. Tour of Britain live broadcast will cover the race through various avenues. ITV4 will be broadcasting the Tour of Britain live three hours per day while a highlights program lasting one hour is also on the cards.

Aside from being available on ITV4, subscribers will also be able to catch the action through the ITV player even after 30 days. Exclusive: Men’s Tour of Britain cut to 6 stages for 2024, as women’s race set for future equal billing

T he men’s Tour of Britain will be cut to six stages in 2024 in order to lay the foundations for full parity with its women’s equivalent in the years ahead, Cycling Weekly has learned.

It follows on from the national governing body announcing it will organise both races in house under its new major events arm .

In a statement shared with Cycling Weekly on Wednesday, British Cycling CEO Jon Dutton confirmed the details of the plan and explained that talks were scheduled with the UCI in order to gain permission to scale back the ProTour event.

"We’ve taken the decision to run the 2024 edition of the Tour of Britain Men over six days rather than the current eight, and we intend to seek permission from the UCI to extend the Tour of Britain Women to six days from 2025," he said.

"This would bring full parity to the events after our decision to align the event names this year – something which is fundamental to our vision for major cycling events in Britain."

Cycling Weekly understands that full parity includes the overall length of the race as well as future prize money at this stage.

British Cycling has contacted various men’s teams to gather opinion on the potential reduction of race days. Dutton explained that there was support for the decision for a variety of reasons.

"From discussions with a number of men’s teams over recent weeks there is strong support for the decision, and a feeling that the reduction in the number of stages will provide more compelling and animated racing for riders at the roadside to enjoy," he explained.

Cycling Weekly revealed last month that the shortened Tour of Britain Women is set to start in Wales in June .

Dutton said that full route details regarding the women's race would be made public within the next fortnight.

He said: "Our host towns and cities for the Tour of Britain Women will be announced within the next two weeks, and we are also now very close to finalising our hosts for the Tour of Britain Men.

"Our team has worked around the clock to safeguard the future of the races in an incredibly short timeframe, and we’re also hugely thankful for the commitment of those who have stepped forward to support us this year and those that have pledged their support for 2025 and beyond.

"While 2024 was always going to be about protecting the immediate future of the races, we remain hugely excited by the opportunities to modernise and grow the events in the years ahead."

British Cycling took over the organisation of both events after the collapse of the former promoter, SweetSpot . After being beset by financial difficulty, the firm entered liquidation in January .
