Exploring EASTERN SAMAR: The Province of Beauty and Resiliency

Enjoying Amandaraga Falls in Lawaan!

One of the three provinces in the island of Samar is Eastern Samar , located at its easternmost part that faces the Pacific Ocean. I didn’t know very much about this province until I visited it recently. I was surprised to find out that Eastern Samar is endowed with beautiful waterfalls, pretty beaches perfect for surfing and caves among others.

Eastern Visayas (Region VIII) consists of the provinces of Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Samar, Eastern Samar and Northern Samar . I thought it was possible to explore five (5) of these provinces in five (5) days but I thought wrong. Even though different means of transportation are available in these places, key destinations for a traveler to visit are relatively far from each other. Or if not, the transportation needed to go from one place to another is not always available.

This is the first (1 st ) part of a 5-day, 3-province travel covering Eastern Samar, Leyte (and a bit of Southern Leyte) and Biliran. It should be noted that Tacloban , Leyte’s capital, serves as the gateway to other key cities and places in Eastern Visayas. I entered the region via Tacloban and from there I went to Lawaan and Guiuan of Eastern Samar. After spending overnight in Eastern Samar, I went back to Tacloban to explore the city and spent the night there. The following morning, I (along with two of my friends this time) headed to Biliran. There we explored Sambawan Island as well as a few of the waterfalls of the island province. After spending the night in Biliran, we went back to Tacloban and spent the remaining time that we had exploring some more before heading back to Manila.

EASTERN SAMAR

Eastern Visayas

Occupying the eastern part of the island of Samar, Eastern Samar is one of the six provinces found in the Eastern Visayas Region. It is bordered by Northern Samar in the north, Samar in the west, the Pacific Ocean in the east and Leyte Gulf in the south. Because of its location, Eastern Samar is often affected when typhoons enter the country.

The province has a land area of 4,660.47 sq. km and a population of 467,160 (2015 census). Most of its people speak Waray-Waray, though many of them also know how to speak in Tagalog, Cebuano and English. I found the people of Eastern Samar very friendly, probably some of the friendliest I have encountered in the whole Visayas region. The way the people in this province interacted with me while I was there was nothing short of respectful and polite.

The province’s major economic resources come from fishery and agriculture. Its tourism activities center in the town of Guiuan, though other places are now being tapped for their potential like Lawaan.

Eastern Samar is one of the provinces most hit by Super typhoon Yolanda back in November 2013. Many lives, houses and and other structures were lost. The people’s sources of living were drastically affected. It’s good to know that the whole place seems to have already recovered, or at least, recovering from the tragedy.

WHAT TO EXPLORE IN EASTERN SAMAR

The Four Waterfalls of Lawaan!

Lawaan is best known for having four beautiful waterfalls: Amandaraga, Pange, Amanjuray and Ban-awan Falls, which are all located in the Bolusao watershed. The falls of Ban-awan and Amanadraga provide Lawaan’s water system, while Amanjuray serves as its alternate hydro-electric power source.

Amandaraga Falls

As of February 2018, only three of these waterfalls could be reached via hiking. Amandaraga and Pange could be enjoyed for a half day of adventure, and this is what I have done during the trip. Ban-awan Falls was reported to be reached for about 2 hours before, but because of landslides due to recent typhoons, the trek going there has extended to 3 to 4 hours. It would require a whole day of adventure in Lawaan if someone would want to go to the three falls that were mentioned. Amanjuray Falls is said to be reached only by going to the mini-hydro power plant.

AMANDARAGA FALLS

The Stunning Amandaraga Falls!

Amandaraga is one spectacular waterfall! After about an hour and a half of trekking from the jumpoff point, I was able to reach this towering falls. Though unclear where it got its name, “daraga”in Waray means “maiden” and my tour guide, Kuya Juijean said that the falls might have derived its name here. The river system running from the falls is long and wide, and the force of its waters as it falls down from the top is strong. This is said to make the basin near the waterfall itself very deep.

The Bolusao River

PANGE FALLS

PANGE FALLS

A three-tiered falls in the Bolusao watershed, Pange Falls is the smallest of the four waterfalls in Lawaan. The trees surrounding its water basin provide a much needed shade, which is perfect for those who just want to cool down and feel its calm waters. I wasn’t able to swim in Amandaraga that’s why I made sure to swim here in Pange with its shallow waters. Definitely perfect for that mostly sunny day!

The Road to Calicoan Island

Calicoan Island: ABCD Beach

The ABCD Beach is perfect for surfers.

I was surprised to find out that it is in Eastern Samar that the surfing capital of Visayas is found! It is found here in the beaches of Guiuan, located in the southernmost tip of the province. If you can remember, Guiuan is one of the places hit by the typhoon Yolanda back in 2013. Many structures were said to be destroyed and many people were affected by the said super typhoon. Almost five years have passed and yet people in the area still remember the time when Yolanda struck their town. It’s good to know, though, that they are already recovering from the tragedy.

Said to be the most popular tourist destination here in Guiuan, ABCD Beach boasts not only its creamy, fine sand but its sea waves that are ideal for surfing, especially for beginners! If ever you wonder where it got its name, Lonely Planet says that it is named that way after the four reef breaks along the island’s coast. However, an informer said that it was actually named after the acronym ABCD that means advance base construction depot . Guiuan was said to be a formal naval base of the US during the 1940s, and the area of Calicoan was one of the important bases for their supply. As such, many places in Guiuan were named after American names. Now, this made me want to come back to learn more about their history!

ROCK FORMATIONS.

I wasn’t able to surf while I was here due to shortness of time. I strolled along the beach, though, and found interesting rock formations in the coast. Though not “very clean” in the sense that seaweeds and twigs of plants and trees can be found in the shore, ABCD Beach is also a good place for people who just want to relax or just bask in the morning sun.

A surfer tries the waves of Guiuan.

Resorts and other means of accommodation can be found near the beaches of Guiuan. It is understandable that they offer their place in a relatively expensive price compared to the hostels or inns found in downtown Guiuan or even Sulangan.

Beautiful beach.

St. Anthony de Padua Church

BEAUTIFUL CHURCH.

Found in the small island of Sulangan, St. Anthony de Padua Church is one of the most visited places in the town of Guiuan. People go and visit the church to pray and request for the intercession of St. Anthony de Padua, the Patron of lost items, lost people and lost souls. Stories among locals say that the wishes and prayers brought out to St. Anthony, even those that are almost impossible, are granted. Indeed, faith spells no impossibility.

ST. ANTHONY DE PADUA. St. Anthony is the patron of lost things, lost people and lost souls.

EASTERN SAMAR Travel Itinerary

6 AM ETA Tacloban

7:30 AM Van-van’s terminal (Tacloban to Guiuan but drop off in Lawaan)

9:30 AM ETA Lawaan

You’ll be dropped off near Divine Child Academy , Lawaan’s school that is found along the main road. Walk towards their tourism office and register your name. Ask for a guide for waterfalls chasing. In my case, it’s Kuya Juijean (09104861773) who was a delight to be with because he answered all my questions about the place and took my photos during the travel. Ma’am Sarah Gabornes (09292777223), the head of tourism in Lawaan, can also be contacted. She was having a 7-day workshop at the time I went there that’s why we were only able to mingle by the time I ended my waterfalls adventure. By the way, prepare your clothes, dry bag and food that you would be bringing during this time.

10 AM Head to Bgy. Guinob-an , where the jump-off to the waterfalls is located. Walk for five to ten minutes and pay the environmental fee (P50).

10 AM to 3 PM Waterfalls chasing

It took us more than an hour of hiking before reaching the first waterfalls in Lawaan: Amandaraga. The first part of the hike was easy as you just have to walk in a concrete road. It should be noted, though, that you’d be crossing a river before going to the waterfalls. There was a bridge built here but due to the recent typhoon, Urduja, it was destroyed. We had to cross the river that was a bit deep (the water has reached my lower chest while crossing) for about a minute before heading to Amandaraga. The second part of the hike was relatively harder because the trail could be very muddy and slippery. It was sunny when we started our hike but when we were halfway towards Amandaraga, it was raining!

The hike might not have been very easy but it was totally worth it when I reached the waterfalls. Amandaraga was beautiful! I took many pictures of the place. It was also here where my guide and I ate our lunch. We met two men working on a huge tree that was uprooted due to the typhoon while we were here.

It was past 1 PM when we left Amandaraga Falls to head to Pange Falls. The hike going back was still muddy and slippery but it was easier because the trail was heading upwards. It only took us about 30 to 40 minutes before reaching Pange Falls, which may not be as high as Amandaraga but was still beautiful. Besides, its water wasn’t falling too hard and this enabled me to swim and spend a bit more time enjoying it.

It was 2:30 PM when we started heading back to the jump-off point. We had to cross the river again before reaching the paved road towards the main highway.

3 to 4 PM Heading back to the main barangay of Lawaan, taking a bath and preparing to travel to Guiuan

It was in my guide’s house where I took a bath and changed clothes in preparation for my next destination. It was also there where I met Ma’am Sarah again after meeting her for a short bit along the trail towards the falls. She and Kuya Juijean shared stories about the place before and during our waiting in the main road for the next van to Guiuan.

LAWAAN'S TRAVEL CONTACTS.

It took about 45 minutes before a van going to Guiuan passed by! Because of this, I knew I would be reaching Guiuan in the evening.

6:15 PM Reaching Guiuan

I was supposed to ride the multicab going to Sulangan but because it was already evening (last ride was said to be 5 PM), I rented one for about P250 (instead of P300). My guide, Kuya Jayson, agreed to guide me towards Sulangan Church and Calicoan Beach where I intended to stay. It was the night of the super blue blood moon, and I thought the beach was a perfect place for that. It was! After riding the dark and woody road going to Calicoan for about 30 minutes, we reached Sulangan Church. It is where the miraculous parish of St. Anthony de Padua is located. After that, we proceeded to the beach of Calicoan (called ABCD Beach ) where I spent some time observing the moon (yes, it was the time when the moon was in its super blue blood phase!). I intended to stay overnight in one of the resorts here but the relatively low costing resorts were fully booked! So I went back to downtown Guiuan and stayed in the inn of Borongan Transport Terminal . The only available room at that time was an air-conditioned room that costs P450. I agreed and slept there for the night.

7:30 AM Going back to Calicoan Island

I hired a multicab again going to Calicoan Island because I wanted to explore more of the island. Just like the night before, I was able to rent the multicab for P250 instead of P300. There, I spent about an hour or two taking pictures and talking to other visitors.

10 AM Checking out of the inn

I asked my habal-habal driver if he could take me to Van-van’s terminal after going to the inn and he agreed because the terminal was relatively near. I have already prepared my bag back then that’s why my checking out was only quick.

11 AM Heading back to Tacloban

The van wasn’t full yet when I reached the terminal. There was a bakery beside it and so I bought bread that I could eat for lunch. There was also a Mercur Drug Store nearby where I got to buy drinks and chips that I would be eating for the rest of the day. Even though the van wasn’t full yet, it already headed to Tacloban at around 11:30 AM.

List of expenses:

Van from Tacloban to Lawaan – P150

Lawaan Environmental Fee- P50

Lawaan Guide Fee- P300

Van from Lawaan to Guiuan- P100

Multicab for Calicoan and Sulangan- P250 + P250

Borongan Transportation Inn- P450

Van from Guiuan to Tacloban – P120

TOTAL: P1,670

Posted on May 21, 2020 | Julie J. |

Last Updated on November 5, 2022

Samar is truly a unique island, the landscape is just breath-taking. Samar island is different from the rest of the Philippines, facing the Pacific, the scenery changes from one place to another and is beautiful . There are a lot of places to visit on Samar Island, each one more beautiful than the other. If you like nature and are looking for a less touristy island, then Samar is for you and you should add it to your bucket list. Read on to discover the top Samar tourist spots and the recommended Samar itinerary.

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links, which means that if you click on any links and make a purchase, I’ll get a small commission, at no cost to you.

Best Samar tourist spots:

1 – marabut rock formations.

Marabut rock formation, Philippines

These strange rock formations off the coast of Marabut are definitively worth a look. Carved over the centuries by the strong wave of the Pacific, the rocks are quite impressive. There’s also a couple of white sand beaches on some of the formations.

Most of the rock formations are near Caluwayan Palm Island Beach Resort , there’s no need to go all the way to Marabut city. You can rent a boat there for 500 pesos an hour. If you don’t want to go through the resort and to reduce the cost, you might want to try negotiating directly with a fisherman in one of the villages nearby.

Read more about Marabut Rock Formations.

2 – Sohoton National Park

Sohoton cave, Philippines

Sohoton National Park truly is a hidden gem. Famous for its cave system and natural bridge, the park is one of the best Samar tourist spots.

You’ll start by taking a boat to get to the cave, the cave has 3 chambers and is really easy to visit. The guides are really knowledgeable and speak good English. After the visit, you’ll take a kayak to get to the natural bridge. You’ll pass some rapids on the way but the water is really shallow, you’ll have to walk through it. The views are really amazing and the bridge is just impressive.

It is called Sohoton because, during the American invasion, locals used to drop rocks from the top of the cliff on soldiers trying to travel on the river.

You’ll need to stop at the tourism office in Basey before heading to the park.

Read more about visiting Sohoton National Park.

3 – Divinubo Island

Beach, Phiippines

Divinubo Island, also known as Eastern Samar’s hidden paradise , is a piece of heaven. This remote island is slow paced and perfect to unwind for a while. The beach there is amazing, bring your tent and some food to spent a great couple of days.

4 – Try Torpedo Boat

Torpedo boat,, Philippines

The Torpedo Boat Extreme Ride is a “community-based eco-tourism activity promoting environmental conservation and sustainable community livelihoods”.  A couple of years ago someone had the idea to turn the weird way the locals traveled down the rapids into a profitable activity. All the community benefits from this activity. It’s a bit similar to rafting and lots of fun.

You can check out their facebook page . The price is about 2000 pesos for up to 5 people.

5 – Explore Samar cave systems

Sohoton cave, Philippines

Samar Island is rich in caves, and not the one you can visit easily, the one for real caving adventurers. You’ll have to crawl, to get wet and to use ropes most of the time, definitively not for the faint-hearted. Amongst the most popular cave is Langun Gobingob , in Calbiga, one of the biggest in South-East Asia. The cave has 12 chambers and is 7 km deep. It’s also home to blind-crabs, many fish species and thousands of fluttering bats. Nearby you can also check out Jiabong cave , easier to explore and Guinogo-an Cave.

Catbologan and Calbayog are the best places to set up a base. The tourism office can help you arrange for a guide and equipment. permits for some of the caves are required.  There is currently only one agency that specializes in caving in this area: Trexplore .

6 – Biri Island

Biri, Philippines

Biri is famous for its thousand years old rock formations, carved by the strong waves of the Pacific ocean, and is one of the best Samar tourist spots. The rocks are spectacular and the scenery breathtaking. It is truly amazing, a one of the kind destinations. You won’t see anything like it in the Philippines, it’s unique. I could have stayed there all day and just look at it. A must see if you have the opportunity.

There are two main areas where you can see the rock formations, only half a mile from the village. The first one you’ll visit is the Bel-at rock formation , around it, are Puhunan, Macadlaw, and Caranas. The path leading to the rocks starts with a 500 meters boardwalk through the mangrove, then you’ll be able to go around and up Bel-at. On the way back you can enjoy a dip in the crystal clear natural pool.

Next, you’ll visit Magasang and Magsapad rock formations. You’ll cross the sea at low tide, when all the black rocks appear and climb up Magasang, the view, the color, the rock, everything is amazing.

Samar tourist spots itinerary

You can either start from the north, coming from Sorsogon or from the South, coming from Leyte.

Starting from the south, you can visit Sohoton Natural Park and Marabut the same day. The easiest is to stay in Tacloban and do a day trip or stay at the Caluwayan Resort .

On the second day, you can head to Divinubo Island for a night or two.

Next head to Catbologan and go caving.

Your next stop will be Biri Island, where I recommend to stay at least a full day.

If you don’t have much time, you can skip Divinubo and the cave and only visit Marabut, Sohoton, and Biri, which should take you 3 days.

Maupay nga Adlaw! (meaning “Good Day” for the people of Samar, Philippines)

The Philippines is one of the world’s most traveled tourist destination in the world. With a lot of natural resources and scenic views in the country, foreigners cannot just resist the temptation of going to this country. One of the places that which has these characteristics is the Northern Samar of Samar Island. Though not yet that too well-known to tourists, this place will undoubtedly be one of the future gems of the country in the aspect of tourism. Whatever is your preferred destination, beach, waterfalls, and rock formations, this place got it all for you!

Samar is divided into three provinces: Samar province, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar. These three provinces, along with the provinces on the nearby islands of Leyte and Biliran are part of the Eastern Visayas region. It is the fourth largest island in the Philippines after Luzon, Mindanao, and Negros.

One of the old structures in Catarman, the lower portion of which was converted into a small eatery

Going to Samar is quite challenging especially if you are coming from Negros. You will have the option to take the land trip to Cebu and from Cebu to Samar. The land trip from Negros Occidental to Samar would take you the whole day.  Oh well, if you are not in a hurry this can also be fun. But not for me this time. I have to be on the Island at the shortest possible time and I should not be exhausting my physical power so I will be able to run the three- day training in “Personal Effectiveness” for the staff of the Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation effectively.    to take the Bacolod to Manila route…stay overnight in Manila and fly to Samar, Catarman the following day.

We opted to take the Bacolod to Manila route…stay overnight in Manila and fly to  Samar, Catarman the following day.

I wasn’t expecting much from the Island … so I wasn’t surprised when I reached the Catarman.

Tricycle, the mode of transportation around the Catarman

Catarman the Capital of Northern Samar

Catarman is the capital and largest town in terms of both area and population in the province of Northern Samar. The town lies on the northern part of Samar Island and southeast of the Philippine capital, Manila. It is bounded to the east by Mondragon, to the west by Bobon, to the south by Lope de Vega, and to the north by the San Bernardino Strait. At present, there are 55 barangays, 22 of them in the Poblacion .

Before the coming of the Spaniards, it is said that  Catarman was called Ibabao and was part of the extensive Maguindanao Kingdom, which extended from Mindanao to Bicol. Ibabao extended from the southernmost tip of Samar Island to the territories close to Bobon in the northernmost part of the island. The Spanish Conquistadores freely applied the name Ibabao to the island when it established its civil government. The similarities in the vocabularies and pronunciation of the dialects of these areas trace them to a common root as people. The word Catarman is derived from the Turkish word attar (oil of the roses) and inman (holy men).

The town was one of the pueblos established by the Spaniards in Samar Island and was one of the settlements in the northern parts of the island. The pueblo was named Calatman and was one of the pueblos in the Samar and Leyte islands, then collectively referred to as Islas de Pintados.

Catarman is home to the University of Eastern Philippines.

Jojo Vito, Travel Blogger

Inside the University…not the usual scene in some schools

Going around Catarman proper are mostly done through pedicab or simply by walking. I enjoyed walking a lot after all Catarman proper is just very small. One funny experience I had was when I was invited by Ms. Tess Nunez, Training Manager of NWTF to dine outside for my last stay in Catarman (the hotel we stayed has no restaurant). Of course, one pedicab cannot accommodate both of us. So we took one pedicab each. The native bar and restaurant ‘Tsiban” is one of the best places in Catarman, but from the hotel that we stayed, we still have to cross a bridge which was quite steep for a pedicab. The driver of the pedicab I took was tagging along with him her girlfriend. In the middle of the bridge, I can hear the struggling breath of the driver. I heard him telling her girlfriend to get down and push the pedicab. How I wish someone was taking our pictures at that time. The scene was ridiculously humorous.

University of Eastern Philippines Beach, Catarman

University of Eastern Philippines Beach, Catarman, Northern Samar

For travelers, Catarman offered quite a number of Pension Houses. The room rates range from 1,000 to 1,500/room. Catarman is basically simple and Laidback. There are a number of places which one can visit during night time. But I was surprised, food in the restaurants are priced high a bit.

Of course in any trip, food is always a big factor, so the staff of Negros Women for Tomorrow’s Foundation offered to cook dinner for us. Fish like fresh tuna is quite reasonable at PhP 160/kilo in the wet market.

For the first-timer like me, I was looking for a place to buy some souvenirs that I can bring home. There was none. So with my camera, I went around Catarman proper and took some pictures of the place.

 Northern Samar Tourist Spots

Located in Sila Island, this beach will be one of your favorites. Admit it, either men or women will surely fall in love with this place! Who wouldn’t be right? This is one of the best beaches in the country due to its unique pink color of the sand. This is due to the fragments of red corals and different shells mixed with the white sand, making it color pink in appearance most especially when the rays of the sun touch the shore. Thus, making it a picturesque place for your summer Instagram posts. Another factor why this place is loved by many is the fact that the emerald-colored water is rich with corals and fishes. You may also give swimming and snorkeling a try to fully enjoy the experience. Either you stay for the day or overnight through camping, the choice is up to you.

Dalupiri Island

The tropical atmosphere manifested by the long stretched of white sand with planted palms on the side makes this place famous. The availability of accommodations is also one of the factors why tourists love the place, well, they are just located in front of the beach itself making it ideal for instant swimming and snorkeling sessions. On the other side of the island is the part where tourists could witness how gifted the place is regarding marine resources. Reaching this place will only take you a 30-minute boat ride from the Victorina town.

Located on the North-eastern Coast of Northern Samar, this beach is famous for its golden sand beach color. Stretching up to the total length of one kilometer, tourists will surely enjoy walking on the shore while watching the serene and calm water as well as lush shrubbery. On the end part of the beach on the South part lies the two massive rocks which serve as diving platforms for the tourists. Though the place is said to be haunted in some ways due to a folktale that did not stop the visitors from traveling to this beautiful place.

Batag Island Lighthouse

The 101-foot lighthouse in the Island of Batag built during the American Occupation back in the year 1907 is one of the top historical places of the entire province of Samar. This was originally built to direct the passing vessels towards the San Bernandino passage. But today, this place offers an amazing experience for the tourists to see the place in an amazing and exquisite way. Once you are there, you can have a panoramic view of the wide agricultural land, coconut trees, coastlines, mountains, and the passage of San Bernandino. Well, aside from the historical aspect of this place, the scenic view it offers will surely entice the tourists to pay a visit.

NORTHERN SAMAR TRAVEL GUIDE | TOURIST SPOTS

Biri Island Rock Formation

Traveling to this place from the mainland will take you a total of a 20-minutes boat ride. But no need to feel discouraged because the beauty of the place will be worth it. Once you land to the island, the first thing that will catch your attention will be the seven gigantic rock formations which the locals named Bel-at, Caranas, Macadlaw, Magasang, Magsapad, Pinanahawan, and the Puhunan. The place also got the title of “battle of the gods” attributing to the formation of such humongous rocks, though these are formed through the tectonic plate movements. The site is also perfect for those who are water sports enthusiasts (snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing) because of the strong winds and intense water waves.

Capul Lighthouse

The Capul lighthouse was built way back in the year 1896; this served as a guide to different ships and vessels crossing the San Bernardino. This also contributed to the well-known Acapulco-Manila galleon trade. Though you will have to take a 30-minute boat ride from the mainland to go to this island where it is located, the scene awaiting you is so stunning. There is an available viewing area sharing the view of the coastline, crashing waves, San Bernandino passage, mountains, and the Mt.Bulusan of Sorsogon.

Capul Church

The Church of San Ignacio de Loyola or also known as Capul Church was declared as a National Culture Treasure. Why? Aside from the fact that it is already 400 years old, it has been a haven for many Spanish in protecting the town from the Moro pirates. Despite their efforts, the Church was destroyed and needed to undergo two reconstructions to restore it with walls along with a 36-foot bell tower on its side (left). Visit this historic site and be mesmerized on how such Church tested by tremendous challenges stood the test of time.

Laoang Church

The Saint Michael the Archangel Parish or also called Laoang Church is just situated in the center of the town. Built during the 18th century, by Franciscan friars who made Catholicism well-known to the locals. Thus, converting them into Catholics. The antique feature of its facade made it perfect to put the statues of different saints and angels, Saint Paul and Saint Peter, Saint Michael the Archangel, and Virgin Mary to name a few. To further defend the Church from the Moro pirates, the Almuraya Fortress Ruins (wall) was used as a defense system.

Busay Falls

Busay Falls is one of the top tourist spots in the Northern part of Samar. Located in San Isidro, this falls is 2 kilometers away from the actual town. The water coming from the falls pours down to the two huge vertical walls of rock formation going to the bottomless plunge pool. For the adventurous visitors, they may also choose the flat stone spot near the falls to do their cliff-diving. Covered with greeneries and natural beauty of the place, tourists are fond of going here for swimming as well as cliff jumping.

Veriato Falls

The water is coming from the 30-meters high rock slope going down to a vast natural pool which makes it perfect for those who would like to spend their vacations on varied swimming activities. The deepest part of the natural pool is 10 feet, a place where most of the adventurous adults stay. The rock formation on the side part serves as a picnic place for the tourists making it convenient to visit and stay even in the summer season.

Love the idea of returning sometime to Catarman, Samar. I spent several years there with my family and went to St. Michael College. I probably would meet old friends. I still remember when the streets were unpaved and covered with the finest sand. I ride my bike with some friends to Tamburusan, one of the beaches there. I have happy memories of this place!

10 Places to Visit in Biri Islands and Samar + Things To Do

Biri is one of my all-time favorite “off the beaten path” adventures in the Philippines. Facing the Pacific Ocean, this remote island is home to awe-inspiring rock formations carved over time by nature. Scramble up to one of the peaks for an awe-inspiring view of raging sea waves crashing over the rugged landscape.

The nearest airport to Biri is Catarman Airport, which serves direct flights from Clark. From Catarman Airport, you’ll first need to go on a 1-hour land trip to Lavezares Port, the main jump-off point to Biri Islands. From Lavezares Port, hop on a ferry to Biri. The sea crossing takes around 45 minutes. Alternatively, it’s possible to reach Biri from Calbayog Airport or Tacloban Airport. Travel time by land from Tacloban to Lavezares is 6 hours.
