ESSENTIAL Fuengirola Tourist Guide: BEST Things to Do & See

Table of Contents

Fuengirola is a tourist resort located on the Costa del Sol in Spain.

Fuengirola dates back as far as the Phoenicians and also played a role in Roman and Arabic civilisations.

Today a Moorish Castle still stands in Fuengirola. Fuengirola is also home to more than eight kilometres of beaches.

Are you an expat in Fuengirola? What do you like/dislike about it? Let us know in the comments box at the bottom of the page.

Where is Fuengirola?

Fuengirola is located on the Costa del Sol to the south of the tourist resorts of Benalmadena and Torremolinos yet lies to the north of glitzy, ritzy Marbella. There are two airports within a relatively short distance to the resort which are Gibraltar Airport and Malaga Airport.

Fuengirola is 20 km west of Malaga along the coast towards Marbella. Fuengirola is very well located – only 20 minutes drive from the major international airport of Malaga with its huge choice of flights to destinations all over Europe.

Fuengirola is blessed with a good transport infrastructure and there are numerous bus and train services running daily between the resort and Malaga Airport. You can also hire a car for the duration of your holiday.

By car Fuengirola is just off the major roads of N340 or the A7 autoroute. Fuengirola has a regular bus service to and from Malaga airport and also Malaga city centre. Moreover, Fuengirola has a train service to Malaga city centre.

What is Fuengirola Like?

Fuengirola is very much a massive, sprawling high-rise tourist resort comparable to mass tourist resorts such as Benidorm on the Costa Blanca and fellow  Costa del Sol resorts such as Torremolinos and Benalmadena .

There are lots of facilities and amenities here and plenty of nightlife, but for a more traditional taste of Spain head elsewhere!

Is Fuengirola near Benidorm?

People who like Fuengirola would totally love Benidorm but they are not remotely close. Benidorm is far away on Spain’s Costa Blanca coast which is a distance of 543 km and a drive time of 5 hours and 17 minutes. If you want more bars and clubs try Benalmadena, Marbella or Torremolinos instead.

What to See and Do in Fuengirola

If you wish to see what the Fuengirola market has to offer then you can head for the Los Boliches fairground on a Tuesday or a Saturday while on a Sunday you can browse for antiques at the marina.

A few blocks from the resort centre is the Fuengirola Zoo which is one of the most modern in Europe. The Tivoli World amusement park in neighbouring Benalmadena will keep children occupied for many hours as it closes daily in the summer months at two in the morning.

To experience a Flamenco Show you can head for the Parque Miramar Shopping and Leisure Centre where every Wednesday evening the Flamenco Azabache gives a free tourist show.

The Parque Miramar Shopping and Leisure Centre is one of the largest shopping centres on the Costa del Sol and is home to all the Spanish high street stores such as Zara, Springfield, Massimo Dutti, Mango as well as C&A and H&M. There are also multi-cinema screens, bars, restaurants and free parking for as many as 3500 cars.

To see for yourself what Fuengirola has to offer, why not look at a  webcam of Fuengirola .

Hostal Galan – “Our hostel is newly opened and we have low prices (15 Euro / person / night). We rent rooms both daily and monthly. Another popular way to spend a vacation in Fuengirola is to rent an apartment. Many of the apartment complexes are within easy walking distance to the beaches and the most recommended apartment complexes include the Fuengirola Beach Apartments and the Veramar Apartments.

Of course there are also many Fuengirola villas to rent, most of which are located on urbanisations such as campo Mijas and Las Acacias a few minutes away by car from the resort centre and beaches. Here you can expect to rent a 3-bedroom villa with swimming pool and air conditioning for approximately €1000 a week.

There are three golf courses within a short drive of the resort centre which are the El Chaparral Golf Club, Club de Golf Mijas and the Torrequebrada Golf Course.

Moving to Fuengirola

If you are thinking of moving to Fuengirola, then you must read our expat interview with Daniel Holmquist , marketing and IT manager at Alamo Costa del Sol Real Estate below:

Daniel, what would you say would be the advantages to living in Fuengirola compared to other Costa del Sol towns?

Fuengirola, with its near 70,000 inhabitants is the centre of many of the Expat communities on the Costa del Sol. The train from Malaga, by way of the airport, has its last stop here. There are many reasons why so many of our clients prefer Fuengirola. You don’t need a car, several international schools, churches, associations are located in Fuengirola. Many of the businesses in the area are owned by foreigners and the majority of shops have English speaking staff.

However, apart from the expat communities, Fuengirola is a Spanish town with a pulsating everyday life that keeps the city moving also in the winter. The town is located only 20 minutes’ drive from Malaga airport and it has the longest and most beautiful beach promenade on the coast. 8 kms with generous cycle and pedestrian lanes are lined with hundreds of restaurants and bars. Just outside Fuengirola is Mijas Golf with two 18-hole golf courses.

Would the area not suit certain types of people, i.e. are there any possible downsides?

If you don’t like the pulse of a small city, but prefer the countryside, you might find Fuengirola a bit too busy.

What proportion of the local population are Spanish?

It’s approximately 50% Spanish and 50% foreigners.

What are your favourite things to do in the area?

I enjoy having a nice meal with my wife in the different types of restaurants that Fuengirola can offer. I also enjoy going to the beach and playing football with my friends at one of the local sports centres.

Can you give us some insider tips to the best bars or restaurants?

Of course! I have a few favourites, but I can really recommend these:

1. El Rancho de Salva , great meat restaurant in central Fuengirola 2. El Río , fantastic restaurant in Los Boliches with specialties such as Steak Tartar and Fondue 3. El Tostón , renowned traditional Spanish restaurant in the heart of Fuengirola 4. Chiringuito Antonio Videra , Traditional Spanish fish restaurant on the seafront in Los Boliches 5. Indian Balti , traditional Indian restaurant on the seafront in Torreblanca 6. Sawasdee , traditional Thai restaurant on the seafront in Torreblanca

Are there many facilities such as doctors and dentists, shops etc?

Yes, of course! You can find a wide selection of different types of services and in your own language!

Are there smaller villages nearby that you might also recommend?

Mijas, 10-15 minutes’ drive, is a traditional Andalusian village with white-wash little houses and narrow streets.

castillo_de_sohail_09

What are the nearest international schools and how good are they?

Fuengirola has Swedish and Finnish schools and a British College can be found in nearby Torremuelle, only 10 minutes by car. The Norwegian school is in nearby Arroyo de la Miel, also about 10 minutes by car.

Is crime an issue for expats?

Like in every town, there is crime, but it is not something you notice on a day-to-day basis.

Coming onto buying property, what is the market like now in terms of prices going up, or down or staying the same?

Property prices have slowly started rising again, after hitting rock bottom less than a year ago.

Is this a good time to buy and are there any repossessions or very cheap properties still available to buy?

Fuengirola has always been a very attractive place to live, but since the property prices have only recently started turning upwards, now is a great time to buy. Opportunities can always be found even though Bank repossessions are not very common.

puerto_de_fuengirola

What urbanisations are there and can you describe each one and how they might differ from each other?

There are many, but I would like to mention these in particular:

Puebla Lucia

Puebla Lucia is a quiet and peaceful oasis in the heart of Fuengirola. This is a fenced off area with large swimming pools and tropical gardens, but most of all, it is calm and relaxing right in the middle of town! Puebla Lucia was built in the 1980s and is considered the most attractive area of Fuengirola. Puebla Lucia has received several architectural awards for its authentic Spanish building style.

Los Boliches

Los Boliches is a district of Fuengirola, situated in the eastern parts of town. Like the town centre, Los Boliches is an urban area with mostly apartment blocks and a few rows of townhouses. In the blocks closest to the sea, you have the busiest parts and this is also where you have most of the bars, restaurants and shops. You also have several supermarkets and a smaller version of the Corte Inglés department store, all this within walking distance! A few streets up from the beach you have a smaller area of townhouses, which are very attractive due to their central location. Los Boliches has its own train station, so it is easy to go to the airport or further on to Málaga.

Torreblanca

Torreblanca is a district of Fuengirola, with Los Boliches and Los Pacos as its closest neighbours in the municipality. It is a quiet area, but at the same time near the city pulse of Fuengirola and the wonderful seafront Paseo Maritimo. Most of the properties here are villas and townhouses, but you can also find a few apartment blocks. Torreblanca has its own train station and several bus stops, or if you prefer to go by car, Fuengirola is only 2 minutes away. The Malaga airport is roughly 20 minutes away by car.

How much are the typical property prices in Fuengirola for apartments, villas etc?

It depends a lot on situation, views, distance to beach etc, but a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment is usually priced between 180,000 and 240,000 euros. A 3-bedroom townhouse is usually priced between 250,000 and 350,000 euros and a villa from 400,000 euros and up.

Any tips and advice to people looking to buy in Fuengirola or surrounding area?

Since the real estate business is different in Spain to many other countries and agents are in most cases members of collaboration networks, choose one agent that you feel comfortable working with and has good knowledge and experience in the area you are looking to buy a property in and stick to that agent. That agent will then look for a property not just in its own listings but also collaborating agents’ listings and help you through the whole sales process. Of course, we hope that we at Alamo Costa del Sol Real Estate can be your choice of agent!

Daniel, thank you so much for taking the time to help our readers with your experiences in Spain. If you want to contact him, you can find his details below.

Benalmadena or Fuengirola, which is better?

Both are fairly similar, they are close together on Spain’s Costa del Sol, they are large tourist resorts with great beaches so of course they both have plenty of restaurants, bars and things to do but our choice would be Fuengirola because it seems more authentic and Spanish due its history as a former small fishing village.

Torremolinos or Fuengirola, which is better?

Both are popular tourist resorts on the Costa del Sol but Torremolinos is bigger and close to Malaga airport so this makes it better if you want more nightlife as well as a wider choice of restaurants and bars. Fuengirola also has plenty of facilities and things to do and see so choose this if you prefer a smaller city.

We have lived in fuengirola 3 times in the last 18years. The Spanish people are very friendly and helped us to settle into our rented apartments each time we relocated. Our English friends were there to support us whenever something cropped up that was challenging. We also made friends with lots of other people from different cultures in the many bars and restaurants along the paseo. The area has its own eco climate and with lots of things to do and see for all age groups. We still holiday there as and when possible although we are now living back in Manchester England. We will always have half our hearts firmly in Fuengirola . Fantastic place to live and for holidays.

I am a South African, looking at relocating to Malaga, Spain in 2016 as my partner is a Doctor and has landed a great opportunity there. He has an EU passport but I don’t.

I am a qualified Public Relations Officer and Personal Trainer. I currently run the social media, communications and employee management department at M&D Health (multi- disciplinary medical and wellness brand). I am also a personal trainer. I have a vast amount of experience and knowledge in dealing with people (whether it be waitressing, au airing, personal training, receptionist duty, public relations, people management skills and event co-ordinating).

We are coming to Spain in the beginning of next year but I would like to find out what opportunities there are for me beforehand so I can make contact with the relevant people (employees) and maybe even secure a job before I relocate permanently.

I would love to do something in my field of expertise but I am also open to whatever opportunities get thrown my way. I am a friendly, positive, extroverted individual with a passion for health, wellness, peoples satisfaction and hard work. My home language is English but I am in the process of learning Spanish which I am picking up quite quickly.

Any information you can provide me with would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

OVERVIEW OF FUENGIROLA

By Dee McMath

Only 25km from Malaga International Airport is the town of Fuengirola – one of the most popular destinations on the Costa del Sol.  Easily accessible by road, rail or bus, it is not difficult to see why this buzzing cosmopolitan town on the Mediterranean is the number one choice for so many.

There are a number of privately operated health clinics in Fuengirola for patients to go without referal as an alternative to the state health service.

Previously, a tiny fishing village, Fuengirola has become a vibrant metropolis with character.  The advent of many up-market tapa bars, good cafes and restaurants , interspersed with chic boutiques and other shops of interest, as well as fabulous beaches makes it the perfect holiday destination.  The main square, Plaza de la Constitución , has been re-designed but still retains its unique enchantment.  It looks pretty especially at Christmas, when it is decorated with very attractive lights and ornaments.  It is also attractive during the Fuengirola summer feria, when the whole town takes part in the annual street celebrations.  A walk down the narrow, pedestrian streets leading off the main square is a voyage of discovery for the many visitors, who come across some of the hidden secrets and delightful corners of this friendly, Andalucian town.

Beaches in Fuengirola

One of the Fuengirola’s main attractions is, of course, its wonderful seven kilometres (five miles) of sandy beaches , stretching from the Sohail Castle to the west and Torreblanca to the east.

Fuengirola has all the amenities and comforts you need but in a beautiful Mediterranean setting. Whether you love shopping , or looking for a good gym  or municipal sports centres .

Watersports

Water sports are strongly featured in this coastal resort. Where better to get to grips with speed boats, jet skis, parasailing than at the cool Marina .

Getting around Fuengirola

If perhaps you need a more personal hand finding things then you may want to try a Viator guided tour on our excursions page, which always prove to be enjoyable. Buses in Fuengirola run quite regularly to places along the coast such as Torremolinos and Marbella all the way to Estepona and Algeciras. Hire a car is best way to get around as public transport is limited.  Consult our general Car Hire page .

Since the 1960’s, foreigners have been discovering the joys of living in Fuengirola. At the beginning of the 1960’s, there were around 8,500 people living in this small village. By 1980 there were some 30,000 and now there are over 63,000 official residents. In the summer season, this number swells enormously with tourists. read about the history of Fuengirola .

The next places along the Costa del Sol to the East are Mijas and Benalmadena and to the West are Mijas Costa , Calahonda , Cabopino  and Marbella .

The beaches in Fuengirola

The 7km of beaches in Fuengirola have the Blue Flag awards and are manned by lifeguards in the summer. The main beach sections comprise of:

El Ejido/El Castillo (Near Sohail Castle )

This is the beach at the far end of Fuengirola near the Beatriz Palace Hotel. You can reach this beach by car from Malaga, taking the last exit for Fuengirola off the A7 (formerly the N340) at the Castle and park right next to the beach or beside the river. As this is one of the furthest points from the town centre, it is often quieter than other beaches. There are very good beach bars and restaurants in this area. There are jet skis and banana boats here.

Santa Amalia

This beach is about 1.5 kilometres in length, very central and has many restaurants, bars, hotels, apartments, and shops all close at hand. There is also a first aid point. There are places to hire pedal boats, jet-skis, and there are children's play areas. The beach bars in this area are excellent. It is worth trying the "pescaito frito"' (fried fish) and the traditional "espeto" (fresh, grilled sardines on a skewer over an open fire on the beach), an Andalucian summer tradition).

San Francisco

After the Santa Amalia beach is a shorter section (just over 300 metres) known as San Francisco beach. It has all the amenities you would expect from a central beach area. As with the other Fuengirola beaches, during the summer months it can be very crowded, while at other times of the year. There are ample sunbeds and parasols to hire.

Fuengirola Town Council have installed numerous new facilities on the beaches including wastebins every few yards, lifeguard stations, first aid posts, new showers and toilet facilities.

The carriages are licenced by the town council and work all day, every day except some bank holidays.

Pictured right is the footbrdge that joins the castle with Fuengirola. In the summer when the river is almost dry, you can cross via the beach.

In the winter, the river swells making the bridge the only crossing point.

You cannot drive over this bridge.

Fuengirola

Its municipal area is one of the smallest in the province, consisting merely of the coastal strip occupied by the town and the Santa Fe de los Boliches district, which make up seven kilometres of excellent beaches.

Though apparently of Phoenician origin, the town's history really begins in Arabic times with the building of Sohail Castle , part of whose walls still remain, for defence purposes. The town centre still retains a certain traditional air, though it is nowadays characterised by the hotels, apartments etc. necessary to its main source of income: sun and sand tourism.

It was inhabited by the bástulos, the Phoenicians, and, later, the Carthaginians.

The Romans called it Suel and the Arabs Sohail, the name of a star which, according to Ibn-Jallicam, could only be seen in the peninsula from this spot.

In 912, Abderraman III ordered the construction of a fortress on the small hill which stands between the coastline and the mouth of the River Sohail; the remains of this castle, though in a state of extreme disrepair, still form an important feature in the landscape of the Fuengirola coast. It was used as for military purposes and to monitor the shores until the 19th century, playing an important part in the War of Independence.

Fuengirola was captured by the Catholic Monarchs on 7 August, 1487.

In the 17th century, the town acquired its present-day denomination, which appears to be derived from the name by which it was referred to by the Genoese sailors who came to these shores and used dragnets, which they called "gironas".

Abderraman Ben Abdallah Ben Ahmed "El Sohaili", the eminent 12th-century writer and essayist famed for his knowledge of grammar and theology, was born here in 1115.

Eminent citizens Abderraman Ben Abdallah Ben Ahmed "El Sohaili", eminent 12th-century writer and essayist famed for his knowledge of grammar and theology. Miguel Marquez Martin, bullfighter. Jose Lopez Ruiz, journalist and poet.

Fuengirola is a city in the Costa del Sol in southern Spain that is popular with tourists for its long sandy beach and malécon.

Understand [ edit ]

It is one of a number of villages along the Costa del Sol that has grown up with and due to tourism. Note that Fuengirola encompasses a few of the other small nearby communities like Los Boliches, and Carvajal, and has bus and train line serving that area.

Get in [ edit ]

The main airport is Malaga International and just about every airline in Europe runs regular flights into it. The cheapest options from the UK being the usual, Ryanair, Jet2 and EasyJet; Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian from Scandinavia. Once on the ground you have a few options.

By car [ edit ]

Fuengirola is a 25-km drive from Malaga airport. Numerous rental car agents operate from within the airport, but you can usually save a few euros by going to cheaper rental companies across the road from the airport, rather than renting from a company inside

By taxi [ edit ]

Fuengirola is 20 minutes by taxi from Malaga airport, and taxis are available 24 hours a day. Fares are usually €30–35 (depending on time & season). The usual, common sense rules apply when taking a taxi abroad: agree the rate in advance, and if the driver is being vague mention ask to see the rate card "to help him understand your requirement". All taxis are required to have one.

Be aware of the minibuses, as they will often try to charge you €65 or more.

It is always recommended that you use the first in first out policy, commonly.

By train [ edit ]

This will take you approximately 35 minutes by light rail from Málaga airport. Fuengirola is the last stop. The station is about 2 minutes' walk from the terminal building, just go out of the door at departures and turn to the right. It's well sign posted. The fare is €2.80 (€2.80 weekends and holidays) but make sure you have change as it's self-service and there is almost always a ticket inspector. The first train leaves at 05:34 and then every 20 minutes until the last train at 23:03 and is very punctual indeed. Be aware the Los Boliches is also part of Fuengirola, and has a train stop, before the end of the line stop.

You can use the Renfe train between Málaga and Fuengirola if you purchase the Season pass card, for 2024 for 1st quarter, as a part of their green initiative to reduce car traffic.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Fuengirola is a city, but chances are you will only visit the centre and beach front and it is possible to walk everywhere. The light train is excellent for getting up the coast as is the bus service. Both stations are in the centre of the city, 5 minutes walk from the marina.

By bus, there are two major bus lines in the town, with the Avanza bus (red) station about a block from the end of the train station. That station sells the longer route tickets along the Costa del Sol coastline, rather than the local (blue) within the city that has 5 routes and an app. You can buy single tickets or save money if you buy them using their €2 card, which can be refilled at corner stores. The town bus stops are different than the ones at the main station. They cost about €2 for out-of-town riders. You can also buy a 10-stop pass for €10 from the bus driver.

Most merchants are able to accept Credit Cards, and can use contactless tap. Although tipping is not required, if you want to add a tip to a payment being made with a credit card, you need to tell the merchant before they put the amount into the credit card machine, because there is no option to add the tip in the machine. Even most bank ATMs are able to do contactless (Apple Pay) withdrawals. Most ATMs charge €7 foreign transaction fee, but Deutsche Bank only charges €4.

  • Super Sol and Mercadona close to the train station for your shopping and cheap wine.
  • Dunne's for the luxuries from home for the UK and Irish. Watch out, it's not the cheapest!
  • Venture up to the centre of town from beach front. There is a great selection of shops and the prices are not bad. Zara is a favourite but there are a wide range of other shops at good prices.
  • Parque Miramar (get a taxi, €5 from Marina, or a Nr. 4 bus, €1.00) is a huge shopping centre on the edge of town. If you're looking for a change it's worth a look.
  • El Corte Inglés, a huge department store 10 minutes walk from the centre, just walk Avenida de Mijas to the other side of A7 (Coastal road) underpass.
  • Markets are open most mornings along the Costa. If you are unsure just ask where it is at any shop or from a taxi. For Fuengirola the days and locations are: Tuesdays in the Market square, Saturdays car boot sale in the Market square and Sundays next to the mosque.

Fuengirola is a crowded beach town decorated with utilitarian apartment buildings, but, despite half a century of rampant development, it retains a few redeeming qualities. Check out the beach – all 7km of it – adorned with a 10th-century Moorish castle. The town also has a large foreign-resident population, many of whom arrived in the '60s – and stayed (yes, there are a few grey ponytails around).

According to figures released by Fuengirola town hall, the number of visitors registered at the town’s tourist office last month increased by more than 90 per cent compared to the same period of 2023. Tourism councillor José Luis Ponce said that a total 5,106 people had used the facility in January, compared to the 2,644 in January 2023, and that the figure also “far exceeded” those registered in July 2023

“These figures serve as a barometer to know how the tourist situation stands in Fuengirola. If we take an average, it gives us a figure of 150 visitors each day. This means that the office is becoming better known and therefore more used. It also means that the long-awaited deseasonalisation of tourism in Fuengirola is taking place, which is very positive,” Ponce explained.

As for the nationalities of the users, the councillor said that "the British are the most numerous”, with about 30 per cent of the total, followed by Spanish, Scandinavians, French, German and Italian. He also pointed out that 70 per cent of the visitors were female.
