What to Expect in Coiba

It is the jewel in the crown, the holy grail for lovers of diving and snorkeling. Coiba National Park in Panama, an isolated marine preserve 14 miles (about 23 km) off the Veraguas Pacific coast, is a paradise for nature lovers.

It is the most virgin, unpopulated, intact, and boasting a trove of hidden treasures, Coiba is the largest island in the Central American region. In recognition of its uniqueness, UNESCO declared it a World Patrimony Site in 2005.

No other sea on earth has the level of endemic creatures as those found in the waters of Coiba National Park. The Tropical Research Institute (STRI) make a census and found 60 species of coral of which 17% are endemic” “It is fascinating. Here, 90% of the mollusks and at least 80% de the fish are unique” – Juan Maté (STRI).

Coiba has about 1,700 hectares of coral with a high endemic level, it possesses the greatest biodiversity in Central America. The ancient coral reef on Coiba existed long before the pharaohs build the pyramids of Egypt and, resembling a submerged city, they date back 5,600 years. Whit vertical populations of 10 to 12 meters, they are the largest in the eastern tropical Pacific.

Coiba is home to more than 70 endemic species of fish, is a paradise for shark, whales, rays, marlin, sailfish, Orcas, Humpbacked whales, brindled, and bottlenose dolphins. In Coiba, for divers the sharks, turtles, and rays are warranties. Sharks and crocodiles abounded during the period of Coiba served as a penal colony, making an escape from the island almost impossible, white tip reef shark along with Tiger, Bull, Hammerhead, Black Tip and Galapagos shark are common, along with Jew Fish, Amber Jack and Giant Snapper and three species of Turtle, some examples of the 760 species of marine fishes, 33 species of sharks and 20 species of cetaceans.

As such, Coiba is considered the fundamental piece of the marine highway that joins the insular eco-systems of Central and South America. The seas that surround it are a living laboratory, a library of useful chemical compounds that cure sicknesses such as cancer and malaria.

With more than 270 thousand hectares and 38 islands with 240 km of virgin coasts, the park has many places with calm and shallow waters where you can see corals and their great biodiversity and aquarium-like calm such as Granito de Oro, Ranchería, Coco, and Canales de Afuera Island, perfect for snorkeling activities.

While snorkeling near Coiba, it is like a technicolor underwater world revealed itself, you are often surrounded by hundreds of fish, mostly by small plankton-eating fish such as panamic sergeant majors and scissortails. The reefs are inhabited by morays, butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, hawkfish, tilefish, Moorish idols, wrasses, white-tipped reef-sharks (harmless), and many others. Occasionally, you may encounter a huge snapper, grouper, or a nurse shark on the reef. The reefs are also home to turtles, mostly hawksbill and olive ridley turtles, but green turtles and loggerheads have been seen as well. The edges of the reef are often visited by blue-fin trevally and other species of jacks, trevallies, rainbow runners, and occasionally schools of black-tail barracudas (harmless) also make a pass along the reefs. Wahoo, yellowfin tuna, sailfish, and marlins roam the deeper waters of the park.

Cruise on the rivers and tributaries of the Gulf of Montijo, a few minutes after our departure, we can reach beautiful landscapes and wildlife encounters, an hour later we will in open waters very close to the shore.  The journey to Coiba lasts approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes

Day 1: 9:00 am First Stop - Granito de Oro Island / Beach Time

From above it is simply beautiful, from below it is a living technicolor aquarium, decorated with beautiful white sand in place and creates a reef structure that shelters a large variety of beautiful marine life.

It’s the perfect spot for snorkeling lover, thousand colorful fishes swim alone around the island, you will surely find white tip sharks and hawksbill turtle laying at the bottom, that are not afraid of their daily visitors.  Other inhabitants of the island are hundreds of hermit crabs crawling through the fallen palm fronds.

Day 1: 11:00 am Visit Coiba Island & Visitor Center

The 500 square kilometer Pacific island of Coiba, is the largest island in Central America and has had relatively little human impact for centuries. Most of the densely forested island has never been touch by humans.  We will stop in Gambute Beach, we will short tour in our Visitor Centar and small walk into the trail up to  Cerro Gambute , with a beautiful view of some parts of the park.  This island is home to the Ranger station.

Its white sands, an abundance of palm trees make it the ideal place to spend a day enjoying nature; it is special for activities such as sea tourism, kayaking, snorkeling, and hiking.  It’s the perfect spot to take a fast lunch or maybe a beach BBQ.

Day 1: 1:20 pm Canales de Afuera Island

If the time and the weather conditions allow it, we will make a fast stop, to enjoy this large area of shallow corals, where it finds a great variety of marine species and its white sand make it the ideal place where to spend a day in communion with nature, snorkeling in an underwater environment that has been described as the best place in the world to discover new marine species.

Conozca el Parque Nacional de Coiba. Un paraíso que visitar en Panamá.

Coiba National Park was created by decree in 1991. It is a group of islands of volcanic nature that form a natural barrier for inhabitable ecosystems of both marine and land fauna, as well as protecting the coastline and the islands themselves. This makes it an incredible place for snorkeling and exploring nature, unique species, and adventure.

Coiba Island - Hannibal Lodge Panama

Don’t miss one of the most visited places in Panama. Near HANNIBAL LODGE is the world renowned Isla Coiba, 30 miles off the Pacific coast. Just 45 minutes away our Island Tour awaits.

You’ll encounter a magnificent island with beautiful preserved species, treasured marine parks, abundant ecosystem and a historic Panamanian treasure; the Penal Colony of Isla Coiba.

Go inside and explore the crumbling buildings and marked graves of one of the most historic places of Panama. From 1919 to 2004, the Penal Colony was home to the country’s most dangerous criminals as to many who found themselves on the wrong side of politics. It was said to be a horrible place, due to poor conditions, tortures, executions and political homicides during the dictatorships of Omar Torrijos and Manuel Noriega. At its peak, it housed 3,000 inmates in different camps spread around the island.

The prison is now closed, but the tales along with the rooms and barred windows are still there, slowly being reclaimed by jungle.

Oh and one more thing: the place is said to be haunted!

National Park World Heritage Site Diving

Coiba Island, Panama Vacation Guide

Today the  National Park of Coiba  in Panama is an unparalleled destination for discovering new species and one of the best diving sites in the Western Hemisphere. Located off the Pacific Coast in the  province of Veraguas , it was once home to the Coiba Cacique Indians and was later conquered by the Spanish around 1560. The biggest island in Central America was a prisoner's island until 2004 much like Alcatraz was in the US, but it is now a gorgeous National Park. In 2005 it was also declared a UNESCO heritage site. After the prison was its pristine condition made it perfect for a preserve. Scarlet Macaw's can be found in large numbers and the island is still about 75% forested with mainly primary forests.

Coiba Island encompasses over 2,700 square kilometers of islands, forests, beaches, mangroves and coral reefs. The waters surrounding Coiba Island are full of many fish and marine animals. The island is surrounded by one of the largest Pacific coral reefs of the Americas. Many species that have disappeared from the mainland can still be found here. Visitors can take a boat to the island from either El Tigre de San Lorenzo or from  Santa Catalina , which is a more popular surfing destination for tourists. But since the National Park is far from any other town there are only a few services available for tourists. There is however a Biological Station managed by  ANAM,  which provides rooms for small groups for up to 8 guests.

What to do and Where to go? While the variety of activities in the National Park is small, you can  go diving ,  snorkeling ,  bird watching , and  hiking  and enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna. The water surrounding the island are crystal clear and internationally famous for big Blue and Black Marlins which were caught in the past. Some of the beaches provide nestling grounds to turtles (April - December) which is one of the few attractions the park offers on the island, other than flora, fauna and bird watching.

Introduction

Welcome to Coiba National Park in Panama, a hidden gem nestled off the Pacific coast of the Central American country. Known for its pristine natural beauty and rich biodiversity, Coiba National Park offers a truly remarkable adventure for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Stretching across an impressive 430,825 acres, Coiba National Park is not only the largest national park in Panama but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This protected area encompasses the main island of Coiba and 38 smaller islands, creating a sanctuary for countless species of flora and fauna.

Coiba National Park is not just your average national park – it is a sprawling oasis that showcases the many wonders of nature. From lush tropical rainforests and abundant marine ecosystems to breathtaking coral reefs and stunning white-sand beaches, this park has it all.

Whether you are an avid diver, a wildlife enthusiast, or simply seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, Coiba National Park has something to offer for everyone. Get ready to immerse yourself in a world of adventure and exploration as we dive into the details of this extraordinary destination.

Location and Background

Coiba National Park is located in the Gulf of Chiriquí, off the southwestern coast of Panama. It is situated approximately 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the mainland, making it easily accessible for nature enthusiasts and travelers.

The park is named after its main island, Coiba, which was once home to a notorious prison. From 1919 to 2004, Coiba served as a penal colony where dangerous criminals were isolated from society. This dark chapter in its history prevented any human interference or development on the island, allowing the natural ecosystems to flourish undisturbed.

When the prison closed down, Coiba Island and its surrounding waters were designated as a national park in 2005, cementing its status as a protected area. Today, it stands as an example of successful conservation efforts and a testament to the resilience of nature.

The Gulf of Chiriquí, where Coiba National Park is located, is also known as the “Galapagos of Central America” due to its remarkable biodiversity. The park’s isolated position and limited human impact have led to the preservation of unique and endangered species.

Coiba National Park is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 147 species of birds, including endemic species like the Coiba spinetail and the Coiba hummingbird. The surrounding waters are teeming with marine life, including more than 700 species of fish, dolphins, whales, sharks, and sea turtles.

With its stunning natural scenery, rich history, and exceptional biodiversity, Coiba National Park is a treasure trove waiting to be explored. So pack your bags, put on your adventure hat, and get ready to uncover the secrets of this remarkable destination.

History of Coiba National Park

The history of Coiba National Park is intertwined with the dark legacy of the Coiba Island prison. From 1919 to 2004, the island served as a notorious penal colony, housing some of Panama’s most dangerous criminals.

During this time, Coiba Island was strictly off-limits to the public, and its dense rainforests and abundant marine life thrived without human interference. Despite its oppressive past, this period of isolation inadvertently contributed to the preservation of the island’s natural ecosystems.

When the prison was finally shut down in 2004, Panama recognized the ecological significance of Coiba Island and its surrounding waters. In 2005, Coiba National Park was established to protect this unique and invaluable natural treasure.

Since its designation as a national park, Coiba has become an important center for scientific research and conservation efforts. The park’s remote location and limited human disturbance have allowed researchers to study pristine ecosystems and learn more about the incredible biodiversity found within.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee recognized the outstanding universal value of Coiba National Park in 2005 and added it to the prestigious list of World Heritage Sites. This recognition confirms the park’s importance as a global heritage and highlights its significance in terms of natural conservation.

Today, Coiba National Park serves as a living laboratory for scientists and a haven for wildlife. It offers visitors a chance to explore its unique history, experience the wonder of its ecosystems, and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of preserving our natural heritage.

As you venture through the park’s pristine rainforests, untouched beaches, and vibrant coral reefs, take a moment to reflect on the remarkable journey that has led to the establishment and conservation of Coiba National Park. It serves as a reminder that even from the darkest chapters of history, beauty can emerge, and nature can thrive given the chance.

Biodiversity and Conservation

Coiba National Park is a biodiversity hotspot, teeming with an astonishing array of plant and animal species. Its diverse ecosystems, including mangroves, tropical rainforests, and coral reefs, support a wide range of life.

The park is home to countless endemic and endangered species, making it an essential conservation area in Panama. It serves as a refuge for significant populations of several important species, including the Coiba golden frog, the crested eagle, and the critically endangered hawksbill turtle.

The marine environment surrounding Coiba National Park is equally impressive. Its crystal-clear waters harbor over 760 species of fish, including large schools of colorful reef fish, barracudas, and sharks. The park is a critical habitat for whale and dolphin species, such as humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins, which rely on these waters for feeding and breeding.

Conservation efforts in Coiba National Park are aimed at preserving and protecting its exceptional biodiversity. The park’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site has provided additional recognition and attention to its conservation needs.

Immerse yourself in the island experience

Each day spent cruising Coiba and its islands creates thrilling memories for you, your family and friends . Savor a leisurely breakfast anchored by a palm-tree fringed beach before feeling the warm Pacific Ocean caressing your body – there’s only mother nature for company as you relax on the sand.

After a lunch of laughter and conversation, it could be time to explore; with a kayak or dinghy ride along the shore or snorkeling or fishing on a coastal reef. In the evening, unwind over a lovingly prepared dinner under the stars.

More on Coiba

Board your Coiba Island boat easily with us: from the mainland at Santa Catalina (shortest crossing/longer road travel from Panama City) or via David airport at Boca Chica (flights from Panama City and more time enjoying the yacht).

Coiba is the jewel in the crown of Panama’s biodiversity and of indescribable beauty . Almost all is virgin forest as a corner housed a penal colony until 2004, preventing access. It was Panama’s answer to Devil’s Island, and you can still visit the eery ruins slowly being reclaimed by the jungle.

The dolphins, turtles and stingray you will spot, the colourful parrots and other birds you will hear, the vibrant tropical fish you will spy and the unique plants and shells you will check out are testimony to the environmental wealth.

Getting here.

Choose to embark in  Santa Catalina (closest point to Isla Coiba) or Boca Chica (option to visit Islas Secas as well and David airport transfer)

Option 1: Boarding at Santa Catalina or from a seaplane.

Our guests choose boarding the yacht at Santa Catalina as it is the closest point to the Coiba national park, about an hour’s sail away. Santa Catalina is a small fishing village known for its surfing and laidback feel. Guests boarding in Santa Catalina to sail Coiba with us drive from Panama City (about five hours)*. This also gives you road tourism options on the Veraguas Peninsua before or after you Coiba yacht charter. We can arrange accommodations options for you to choose from in Santa Catalina before or after your Cobia cruise.

Boarding time from Santa Catalina (Veraguas province):  2pm. Disembark by 11am on day of return. Easy pick up point in Santa Catalina. One hour journey to Isla Coiba Park.

(*Some guests choose to arrive in private seaplane  at Coiba from Panama City rather than car. We can put you in touch with plane operators.)

Option 2: Boarding at Boca Chica:

Guests choose to board at Boca Chica if they are flying into David airport (45 minute flights from Panama City) or visiting Chiriqui province (including the famous coffee-growing highlands around Boquete). Boca Chica is the home port of the catamaran and accommodations can be arranged at our award-winning boutque hotel, Bocas del Mar . The journey to Coiba from here is around three to four hours, however you can add in a visit to stunning Islas Secas which is half way (known as mini Coiba), so you have a more diverse cruise.

In Boca Chica,  the transfer from David regional airport (DAV) – 50 minutes from Boca Chica – is smooth; we can offer transportation or arrange taxis and there are also car rental operators. David airport connects with frequent short flights to Panama City’s Tocumen (PTY) for international flights or Albrook (PAC). We include courtesy transportation from David airport for all Coiba yacht cruises if you group is arriving and departing on the same flight. You can see the location of the hotel and its dock here

Boarding time from Boca Chica (Chiriqui province):  9am. Disembark by 5pm on day of return. From private dock of Hotel Bocas del Mar to begin your Gulf of Chiriqui and Coiba cruise.

IN SUMMARY: Choose to board in Santa Catalina (shortest crossing to Isla Coiba, more road driving from Panama City) or Boca Chica (airport connections from Panama City and less road travel and more time on the yacht). Reach out to our reservations team for full planning assistance.
