Book Cover for "The Great Ride Of China"
The Great Ride of China is the story of Buck Perley and Amy Mathieson’s 21,000-mile, record-breaking trip around one of the world’s oldest and most diverse countries. What started out as an idea for a month long road trip, became a journey that took the couple from the grass plains of Inner Mongolia to the deserts of Xinjiang and up to the Rooftop of the World in the Himalayas. As the story follows Buck and Amy through all 33 provinces of Mainland China, the reader will have an opportunity to not just learn about the challenges they encountered along the road, but also about a country in transition. Experiences that include 20-mile traffic jams in the center of coal country, visits to cities whose histories span millennia, and a chat with a resident of a cave dwelling equipped with satellite TV offer a unique view into a country that today is often heard of but rarely understood.

Perfect Travel Photo Book Ideas - The Ultimate Guide
All of us love to mark every trip, vacation, or journey with a set of beautiful photos, giving us a chance to share our memories. The right images, curated perfectly, capture those life-changing moments when we travel. But there’s a difference between an album of random pictures and the perfect travel photo book ideas come to life.
But why design a photo book when random images stored on your cell phone will suffice?
Well, no matter how different we all may be, everyone across the globe shares the desire to travel. Heck, it’s why travel posters are so popular! We all love to explore, see new places, eat amazing foods, and experience different cultures. From Paris to Rome to New York City , travel unites us and has done so for centuries.
With the perfect travel photo book, we can go beyond simply sharing our travel experiences. We can use the story told through pictures to learn, grow, and come closer together. Are you looking for the perfect travel photo book ideas? Do you want to capture every lesson, memory, and life-changing experience? Read on for our ultimate guide.
What Is a Travel Photo Book?
The perfect travel photo book keeps your trip alive long after you unpack your suitcase. But, when it comes down to it, what is a travel photo book, and why would you want to make one anyway? After all, how can a photograph compare to seeing the pyramids in Egypt or drinking a bottle of wine at the Trevi Fountain in Rome? Pictures are nice, but they don't compare to the real thing, do they?
A great travel photo book is an opportunity to bring your trip to life and share your memories. When done right, it can add new perspectives and value you hadn't seen the first time. Plus, designing a travel photo book is a great way to relive your journey! Turn the process into a project. As you recall the memories, share them with family and friends. You can get closer to loved ones who went on the trip as you create your photo book.
Why Should I Make a Travel Photo Book?
Why, though — why design the perfect travel photo book after taking the ideal journey? Can a photo book really capture everything you felt on your trip? We say emphatically, yes! When done right, a travel photo book can enhance your trip or vacation in many ways. It can become the perfect coffee table memoir of your favorite places around the world. In fact, there are numerous reasons to create a travel photo book.
Photo books are a great way to display pictures and tell your story. Here are a few more reasons why a travel photo book is the way to go:
With a Travel Photo Book You Can Say Goodbye to the Digital Screen
We live in a digital age. Everyone spends their working and off hours on their cell phones, tablets, and computers. But a travel photo book lets all of us, for just a brief moment, say “no” to our digital screens. Even in this day and age everyone loves a physical book. Why? We all long for something intimate, like a book. Travel photo books give us a minute to put down our phones and flip through our memories. They bring us closer to our loved ones.
A Travel Photo Book Is a Work of Art
You can’t put the digital photos from your phone on your coffee table. Photo books, on the other hand, make a great addition to any room. Add a photo book to your coffee table, bookshelf, or living room as an accent piece and watch as the compliments roll in from your friends and family.
Your Travel Photo Book Travels Well (and No Help Desk Is Needed!)
Sure, you can pull out your phone and laptop to share your photos from your last trip. But what if the wi-fi is down or your battery is dead. Travel photo books travel well. Moreover, they come with no battery and no need for 24 hour customer support. You can take a book to family occasions, friends' houses, or anywhere you wish to share your memories.
These are only a few reasons why travel photo books are the perfect way to memorialize your latest journey. But how do you go about making one? Read on for more tips and tricks.
How Do You Make a Good Travel Photo Book?
How do you make a good travel photo book? You use MixPlaces, of course!
Making your very own travel photo book with MixPlaces is an exciting journey of its own. Thanks to our photo book-building algorithm, which uses the data in your pictures to lay out the images for you, you can have a unique, beautiful travel photo book within minutes.
Our one-of-a-kind photo book options are customizable, too, letting you create something extraordinary. You’ll be able to capture old memories and create new ones, thanks to MixPlaces.
But how does it work? How have we blended technology, art, and of course, your memories, to allow you to design something truly unique?
How to Download the MixPlaces App
The process begins with our app — or our desktop version for those who prefer to do things in classic mode. We use the metadata in your images to create a truly spectacular travel photo book (but more on that soon). And while everything may seem like magic at first glance, it’s all powered by the latest technology. As someone famous once said, magic and science, when done correctly, are indistinguishable.
Downloading the app is easy. Go to either the App Store or the Google Play Store (it’s available on both Android and iPhones), search for MixPlaces, and download. Once completed, the real fun begins!
Different Types of Travel Photo Books: Chronological vs. Place
While a great travel photo book is, in many ways, the antithesis of digital photography, it’s also built upon its foundation. Nowadays, everyone's photos are on phones, computers, SD cards, and hard drives, where they can disappear into a black hole, never to be seen again. But at MixPlaces, we can help you use the metadata in your photos to create a travel photo book that’s powerful — one that brings your pictures out into the light for everyone to enjoy.
There are a couple of different ways to do this. With MixPlaces, you can build two different types of travel photo books:
- Chronological Photo Book - Transform your travel memories into a stunning story with a personalized chronological photo book from MixPlaces. Our easy-to-use builder organizes your travel moments into a sensational story, breaking down every milestone by day, date, week, month, or year.
- Place-Based Photo Book - Design a unique and personalized Places Book with MixPlaces to turn your travel memories into a captivating story that can be cherished for years to come. Our builder organizes your moments by location, breaking down every milestone by neighborhood, city, town, country, or place.
The best travel photo books aren't anything in particular (after all, creating something unique means creating something personal). But, like a journey, a travel photo book goes wherever you take it. Let’s take a deeper dive into MixPlaces photo books.
A Chronological Travel Photo Book Tells Your Story From Beginning to End
With a chronological book , you can share your adventures, from the planning stages to the final moments of your journey, and gain a deeper look at the story behind them.
Capture your wanderlust and create a travel book that includes all of your favorite travel moments, from the breathtaking views to the delicious meals and exciting activities. Whether it's a solo trip, romantic getaway, or family vacation, a chronological photo book will allow you to relive your experiences and share them with loved ones. Let MixPlaces help you turn your travel moments into a stunning album of enhanced memories that can be treasured for a lifetime.
Let our algorithm highlight your most memorable moments and lay out your images based on different dates. With a chronological travel photo book from MixPlaces, tell the story of your journey from beginning to end — and create that story in minutes with our app!
Place-Based Travel Photo Books Focus On the Places You Hold Deep in Your Heart
With a places book , you can relive your travel adventures and gain a deeper understanding of the places you've been, from the vibrant streets of Tokyo to the stunning landscapes of New Zealand.
Capture every detail of your journeys, including your favorite sights and experiences, and bring them to life in a beautifully designed Places Book. Whether you're an avid traveler or just looking to preserve your memories of a special trip, our builder makes it easy to create a custom photo book that tells your unique story.
From exploring new cities to discovering hidden gems, a Places Book from MixPlaces is the perfect way to showcase your love of travel and preserve your most cherished memories.
Whether you celebrated life-changing events in Paris or have special memories in and around your house, we’ll find the sites that mean the most to you and build a book focused on them.
How to Make a Good Travel Photo Book With MixPlaces
After choosing between a chronological or place-based photo book, it’s time to hop into the MixPlaces app and build your travel photo book. How do you make a good travel photo book? Below, we explain in detail the steps you need to take. We’ve also included the following quick reference guide that will help you build a beautiful book in a snap.
Follow these steps, and before you know it, your journey will jump off the page:
Hard or Soft Cover? Yes Please!
Whether you choose a hard or soft cover book from MixPlaces, you’re getting the best we have to offer. Our binding, building, and production is all done locally, giving you a final product that lasts forever.
Orientation and Size Really Do Matter!
The next step to creating the perfect travel photo book with MixPlaces is a simple but crucial one. You need to choose both the size and orientation of your book. While it may seem small, every detail counts when building your book and telling your story. Do you want a portrait, landscape, or square? Regarding the size, are you thinking 11x11 or 8x8? Don’t worry. You can always go back and change it.
Now For the Fun Part: Upload Your Photos
It’s time to upload your photos and build your book. Once you choose your best shots, the MixPlaces app will ask you to pick a few favorites. You’ll also have a choice between a few different design styles, including the following:
You’ll name your travel photo book and, depending on the type of book you’re creating, designate chapters too. After that, the real magic begins!
A Quick Edit
You may need to perform a quick edit on some of your photos. MixPlaces will review the data on your photos and ask you to fill in any missing information. `
Pick Your Favs (It’s Hard to Choose, We Know!)
Next, the app will ask you to choose a few of your favorite images from the ones you’ve uploaded. While picking a favorite photo is like choosing a favorite child sometimes — difficult, if not impossible — this tells the builder which photos to highlight when creating your book.
Choose a Design Style
Here you’ll have three options — Classic, Modern, and Minimalist. Whichever you choose will inform how the MixPlaces algorithm designs and builds your book. For example, if you choose minimalist design, the algorithm will choose colors, artworks, and layouts from within tht family and randomize them throughout your book.
Don’t Forget to Save!
You’ll be asked to choose a name, date, and even image density for your project. In this area is where you will save your project.
Chapter 1: In the Beginning…
Next the app will identify chapters for your travel photo book. For example, if your book can be broken down by place, the app may give you several options, asking if you want to create chapters based on country, region, or city. You are also given the option to skip, thereby not adding chapters to your photo book.
Using the Data in Your Photos, MixPlaces Builds a Layout in Minutes
How do we create these beautiful layouts for you? We design the picture-perfect book based on whether your photos are in landscape or portrait layout and how many there are. It's all determined by the number of pictures per page and the orientation of the photos. Everything is done by our algorithm — and done in minutes.
And then, we choose the artwork. Based on the dates and locations of your photos, we add custom street maps , coordinates art , custom star maps , and more. Each piece of information highlights your trip and brings out more detail. Where were you standing when you took that picture in Scotland? How were the stars aligned on that one unforgettable night in Brazil? What streets were near those monuments you saw in the United Kingdom — the ones where you kissed for the very first time?
Customization: What Makes MixPlaces Travel Photo Book Unique?
Of course, no one wants a travel photo book that's entirely computer-generated, and MixPlaces understands that better than anyone. What makes MixPlaces travel photo book so unique is the fact that our powerful app lets you customize your book in myriad ways. Once your book is built, our Editor takes you through various steps, giving you so many options to add a personal touch.
What really makes MixPlaces stand out from others on the market today is how we connect the metadata in your images with real artwork. What do we mean? Just take a look at what you can add to your travel photo book:
- Star Maps - see what the stars looked like on any given night of your trip.
- Street Maps - create beautiful, customizable street maps that highlight memorable locations to which you went.
- Coordinates Art - commemorate your favorite place with a coordinate image, marking the exact location of those very special moments.
And that’s not all. With MixPlaces, once our builder creates your book, our editor let’s you view different layouts for each page, change page layouts, change the order of pages, add or delete a page, and change specific photos on a page.
Mix and Match Photo Groups Too
You can even mix and match photo groups in the MixPlaces Editor, though, in this case, the app will ask the user if you want to rebuild (start over) or continue as is. If you upload new images to the book, the Builder will re-organize based on the latest data, making the book look different. Either way, users have a gorgeous travel photo book that brings out their memories in mere moments.
All of the above are just the basics, of course. Let’s look at what goes into making the perfect travel photo book.
What Should Be Included in a Photo Book?
Now that you know how to create the perfect travel book, what should you include? Most vacations are filled with unforgettable moments — from historical monuments to romantic evenings. But how do you decide what makes it in the book and what goes on the cutting room floor? What about your memories from small road trips or weekend getaways? Can you create a book out of those too?
When you design a travel photo book, many decisions go into the process. But the process should be fun too. And while you're at it, make it a collaborative process. Invite your travel partners to bring their photos and include them in your book (unless the book is a gift. Then, mums the word!).
Let's relive vacation memories the best way we know how with an adequately curated travel photo book. Here is our ultimate guide on what you should include.
The Top Moments You Remember From Your Trip
First things first — what were the top moments from your trip? These can be more than just vacation highlights, such as prominent monuments or sightseeing spots. After all, we've all seen the Eiffel Tower . What about the more intimate moments (don't worry, not too intimate)? Or maybe a special place where you felt changed.
Find memories that mean something to you and add those to your travel photo book. Save the sightseeing photos for T-Shirts and knick-knacks. Here, you want to capture unique, memorable, and life-changing moments.
Stories and Anecdotes That Made the Trip Special
Share your stories and anecdotes! Every trip has a funny story — remember that time you tripped on the Spanish Steps (don't worry, no one got hurt!). Use your text to add the stories everyone remembers, along with the inside jokes and touching moments that made the trip one you'll never forget.
Twenty years from now, when your kids ask why you were lying down on the Spanish Steps, you can smile and tell them the story! Vacations are about adding to your personal story, and travel photo books are a place to write the next chapter.
Pin Your Favorites Sites On A Map
Maps are a great way to highlight your journey in a travel photo book (and MixPlaces is perfect for this). Outline your trip with an image of your route Indiana Jones style! Adding a street map is a fun touch if you take unique pictures at a particular location.
Adding your favorite sites complete with maps or routes can make a travel photo book pop. Whether you went to the Eiffel Tower or caught a baseball game in every stadium in the United States, a map can help your book tell the story. Turn your travel photo book into something more by bringing the sites you saw to life!
Add Some Personality To Your Travel Photo Book
Your book's first page should feature pictures of your traveling companions with captions describing who they are and what they do. For example, if you took a road trip with the fam, you may note that Dad took the wheel while Mom was the navigator. This works well for extensive group trips with lots of people, especially when you start to add funny anecdotes next to everyone's name. For example, Missy: Trip Comedian; Dave: Vacation Tour Guide (Who Always Got Us Lost).
Show Everyone Pictures Of Your Food (Really!)
Food — sometimes, a great trip can be all about food. Where you ate, what you ate, and the conversations you had at every meal. Food can bring us together, and the perfect meal can change your life.
Add food to your travel photo book. There's a story behind every nosh, and your book will bring it out (and make you hungry while doing so). Put everything from fine French dining to hot dogs at the carnival. Show people the exotic meals you had while traveling to new places and prove to everyone you ate the world's biggest steak. Nothing makes for a better memory than the food you ate.
Collaborate With Family, Friends, and Travel Companions
The best travel photo books are like the best vacations — better with friends! Add to your book by inviting your travel partners to collaborate with you. Multiple points of view will help you tell a well-rounded story. Plus, your friends and family will have great pictures that you may not have seen. Add a special section for friends and family, or mix their photos throughout the book.
Either way, the story of your journey will be richer and all the better for it.
Simply ask your travel companions to upload their photos to MixPlaces. Upload them to the app and customize your album in any way you like! Have a travel photo book party and together, you can go through all of your vacation photos and decide which ones will look best in your book. You can even make a day of it.
Add Your Travel Schedule For More Flair
Some trips are spur of the moment, while others are scheduled tight. If yours was the latter, why not include a copy of your trip schedule in your book? Give yourself a lasting reminder of how much fun you had darting from one place to the next. Did you go from museum to monument to lunch? Or was there time for sightseeing on your own? Did you have a tour guide (did you get their picture)? An itinerary can add some much-need flair to your travel photo book.
Travel itineraries don't have to be complicated either — a simple list will do the trick. For example:
- Monday - Breakfast, Eiffel Tour, Lunch, Musée du Louvre , Dinner, Drinks
- Tuesday - Breakfast, Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris , Lunch, Walk down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Dinner
- Wednesday - Early Breakfast, Musée d'Orsay , Lunch, Arc de Triomphe , Dinner, Palais Garnier, Opéra National de Paris
You can give as much or as little detail as you want. But with a schedule, you'll be able to note everything you did and everywhere you went, adding to the story of your travels.
How Many Photos Can You Put in a Photo Book?
How many photos can you put in your travel photo book? Better still, how do you prepare you book? No matter where in the world your journey takes you, you want to make sure that you design a travel photo book that brings your travels to life — and that lasts a lifetime. While many different apps can help you create a travel photo book, only MixPlaces can build something unique that tells a real story. Still, there are a few steps you'll want to follow as you prepare your book.
The beauty of MixPlaces is that it's simple. The app's intuitive algorithms take your photos and build not just a book but an enhanced memory. Your travel photo book becomes something you will cherish for years. It's a premium, quality memento that repeatedly takes you back to your trip. Moreover, it's a fantastic value for the money.
Here are a few simple steps to help you get things started. Follow along and have a photo book that brings your journey to life. Your memories will jump off of every page!
Organize Your Photos
What photos say the most about your trip? The first thing you want to do when creating a travel photo book is organize your photos. While MixPlaces will create layouts and organize images in the app, you still want to go through your images beforehand to decide which pictures to upload and add to your book.
Go through your photos and put them in a file marked "trip" or "vacation." Take an afternoon alone or with friends and choose which pictures of the most likely hundreds you took on your vacation you should add to the book and which you should cut. It's an excellent opportunity to reminisce while going through everything. With everything properly organized, every other step will be much easier.
Choose a Story and Theme
How you tell your story is essential. Sometimes these things happen naturally, and sometimes they need a little push. Look at your photos and think about the story they tell. Was your journey fun? Enlightening? Educational? Romantic? The answer may not be so apparent at first glance.
What do you want to remember about your trip — the journey itself or the moments that made it up (there is no wrong answer here)? You may want to create a chronological photo book, guiding readers through your journey, or more of a place-based one that highlights special moments. How you curate everything is up to you.
When you look back on your travel photo book in 20 years, you want to remember your trip exactly as it was. Use photos that will capture the reader's attention. More importantly, organize your pictures in a way that will add truth to your story.
Selecting and Editing the Best Images for Your Book
Though it may seem obvious, you always want to choose the perfect pictures. Before designing a travel photo book:
- Don't just organize your photos.
- Find the best photos too.
- Go through your trip's images and find the perfect shots.
- Be highly selective — no blurry photos or cropped images.
You're creating a book meant to last, so find picture-perfect... pictures. The best stories always shine with the best images.
Do You know the adage "less is more?" Well, that most definitely applies when creating a travel photo book. Nobody wants to see 50 pictures of you standing in front of a mountain (no matter how beautiful the mountain, or you, maybe). Moreover, you only need a few shots. Choose one or two perfect photos, and let the moment speak for itself.
Customization: Choose a Unique Look and Feel for Your Travel Photo Book
As you begin to wrap up your travel photo book, you want to add a bit of personal flair. Customize the book with a unique size, cover type, paper, and other trimmings that fit your style. Find something that works for you and matches your journey's feel. Make your book feel romantic or adventurous.
Most of all, give your travel photo book a high-end touch. Every detail helps your journey come to life. The book will sit on your coffee table or bookshelf for years. It will be a part of your home. Will a hardcover or soft cover work for you? What type of paper do you want for the pages?
Some other small details to help your travel photo book feel notable include:
Clean and Balanced Designs
Simply put, don't overcrowd the photos on any page in your book. Give everything room to breathe and stand on its own. Let the reader experience each photo. You're not creating a collage, so don't put 50 images on one page.
Playing with Typography
Words are important — and how you present those words is even more important. How will you arrange the titles and words on the page? What fonts will you use? What font size will you use? Will you choose large header styles or smaller, more discreet types? Spacing, copy length, and more should all come into consideration.
Using Negative Spaces to Your Advantage
This may sound a bit opaque, but negative space can make your travel photo book pop. Don’t be afraid of a little negative or white space on the page and how it can add to your story.
Adding Meaningful Quotes or Phrases to Your Travel Book
“Not all those who wander are lost,” wrote J.R.R. Tolkien in The Fellowship of the Ring. “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page,” St. Augustine was quoted as once saying.
“This vacation rocks,” you might have said on your last trip. Think about adding it to your travel photo book, whether it’s a deep and meaningful quote or just something fun from your travels. The perfect travel photo book ideas include placing quotes, anecdotes, and other tiny sayings throughout your book. The right amount of words (not too many) can complement your photos, making your book go from good to great.
How Do You Protect Your Photo Books?
Protecting your travel photo book isn’t easy. However, it all starts with quality. With MixPlaces, you’re guaranteed a premium, high-quality photo book that will last for ages. We use only the best paper and the best materials.
Creating the perfect travel photo book isn’t easy — but the perfect trip is like finding the perfect gift , it’s very hard to pull off. But with our Ultimate Guide by your side and help from great apps like MixPlaces, things just got easier. So, hit the open road, grab the next flight, or just take a short overnight to the closest bed and breakfast. Wherever your next journey takes you, the proper tools can now help you build your trip into the perfect travel photo book.

Home » Planning & Creating » 9 tips and ideas for creating a great travel photo book
3. Find a story or theme
Look through your images and see what kind of visual story you want to create. Some photography books tell a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Others feature photos grouped by subject matter, color, or theme. There is no right or wrong way to organize your book, but the process will go more smoothly if you choose a direction or focus. If you’re making a travel photo book to share with other people, think about which photos will draw them in and capture all the different sights and experiences.
4. Select and edit images carefully
It’s always a good idea to organize, crop, and edit your images before you start designing the pages of your travel photo book. When choosing your best photos, be as selective as possible. Eliminate blurry images and duplicate shots of the same scene. Remember, less is more. (You don’t need five photos of the same boat or building.) Try to include a variety of close-ups, panoramas, people, and landscapes.
5. Choose a unique look and feel
You’re in charge of the look and feel of your travel book. Pick a format, size, cover type, and paper type that makes sense for your project and audience. Are you going for a high-end, hardcover coffee table book? Or do you envision a more informal softcover photo album? If you want a truly luxurious showcase for your panoramic landscapes and breathtaking vistas, choose layflat. Our Layflat Photo Books feature panoramic spreads so your photos can sprawl uninterrupted across two pages.
6. Pick a design tool
With Blurb, you have the option to create photo books on your phone or computer. You can use the Mobile app on your phone, download BookWright on your desktop, or try our Adobe-compatible tools. Explore our free book-making and design tools to find the right fit.
7. Design clean and balanced layouts
Since you’re taking the time to showcase your favorite photos, make sure that you give them room to breathe. A common mistake people make in travel photo books is crowding the page with too many images. A photo collage can be fun for a page of ‘outtakes,’ but typically you want to allow white space between photos if there are more than one or two on the page. You can jumpstart the design process by using our free travel photo book templates to create balanced, impactful page layouts.
8. Add meaningful text and captions
This step might be as simple as giving each group of photos a title or as involved as adding detailed captions, stories, or fun facts. Think about what kind of information could make your story even richer—and which anecdotes or travel memories you want to get down in writing before you forget! If you’re making a gift, consider adding a dedication page or personalized notes.
9. Savor your book
There’s nothing like holding your newly printed travel photo book and flipping through those beautiful pages as all your memories come rushing back. If you’ve been “meaning to” make a travel keepsake for a while, there’s no time like the present. Get started today.
Blurb is a print-on-demand platform where you can design and print your own travel books. For more ideas and inspiration, check out the travel photo books by other Blurb creators in the Blurb Bookstore .

Tips and Ideas to Create the Perfect Travel Photo Book
Whenever you travel, you make amazing memories. From the food you try to the sights you see and the people you meet, you won't want to forget a single second of it. Travel photo books are the perfect way to document all those amazing and unique experiences you have when traveling.
What Are Photo Books?
Photo books are like photo albums, but they're much easier to make. With photo books, you take the pictures from your phone's gallery or social media and print them directly onto the pages. From there, you can change the photo order, add and remove images, add captions, and more to create the perfect keepsake.
People make photo books to celebrate many different events and occasions, including graduations, birthdays, the holidays, and anniversaries. They also make great gifts for your loved ones.
Why a Travel Book?
Photo books are the perfect way to save special memories. From the pictures we take with our friends and family to our favorite photos of our pets, these keepsakes ensure we never lose a single moment.
With this logic, it only makes sense to make a travel book. The memories we make on our travels are unlike any other. Rather than endlessly scrolling through social media to find the dozens of pictures you've taken, photo books offer a way to capture and keep all your best travel moments in one place. Every flick of a page will take you back to that unforgettable trip.
Most photo book sites let you add text, change the order of the images, and more to create a beautiful adventure book you can proudly display on your bookshelf or coffee table .
Travel Photo Book Ideas and Tips
Looking for travel book inspiration? Our tips and ideas are sure to help you make the travel book of your dreams.
Stick to One Destination Per Book
If you're an avid traveler, the memories of each trip you take may blur together, especially if you tend to backpack or visit multiple destinations at a time. Sticking to one destination per book will help you organize your photos and memories into categories, so you never miss a single one.
For example, if you took a trip around Europe, theme each book on a single country you visited. Fill the pages with images from Switzerland only, and then make a separate one for France. In the end, you'll have a whole plethora of books filled with adventures.
Plan out your Photo Book in Advance
This tip may add time to the process, but it will help ensure you get the custom photo book of your dreams. Decide whether you want to organize your photos in chronological order or if you want to leave your favorite photos for the end of the book.
For example, carefully select the images you want and plan out the details you'd like to include in each caption.
Some sites will offer different backgrounds, fonts, and more. Experiment with page layout options and photo order, and you may find some creative ideas to house your most precious memories.
Take the Time to Edit your Photos
Whether you're saving vacation photos, pictures from a weekend getaway, or snaps you took during your favorite road trips, you can make a travel book you're truly proud of with a few photo edits. Even if photography isn't your strong suit, or if you're a total beginner, you can still learn a few tips.
If you've taken all your photos on your phone, we have a few mobile phone editing tips that will make them stand out and help create a professional-looking book you can be proud of.
Create a Food Travel Book
One of the best things about traveling is the food. Whether you're crossing the ocean or just going up the road, you're bound to find a million new, fun places to eat and new foods to try. No travel book is complete without the occasional food snap, but what about a book dedicated solely to food? If you like to cook yourself, you'll have endless pages of inspiration for meals to try out!
This is one of the best travel photo books for a foodie.
Group Certain Photos Together
From meals out to days spent soaking up the sun on the beach, and those afternoons sightseeing, grouping your photos by the events will help you create a consistent book. If you're traveling with your loved ones, group photos of your friends and family together.
You don't just have to group in terms of events, days, and people - why not create a timeline of your trip, from start to finish? Timeline photo books are great if you have many adventures to talk about; you can ensure you won't miss a single story.
Different photo book sights will offer different layouts, so you can easily find a beautiful and creative way to group your travel photos together.
Add in a Map of Where you Were
Contrary to popular belief, you don't just have to add in your own travel photos. Instead, spice up your travel photo book with other fun inserts, such as a map of where you were. If you don't have one to hand, a quick Google or Pinterest search will bring up a range of different options. This way, you'll always be able to see which part of the world you were in.
A map would also make a great cover photo for your travel photo book!
Use Captions to Tell a Story
Our adventures are usually full of fun and interesting stories, whether passed on from the people we meet or the memories we make on our own. Put your photos in chronological order and use the captions to tell a story. If you're not a wordsmith, don't worry! It doesn't have to be an essay; just a few details will be enough to set the scene.
If you tend to take a travel journal with you, a story photo book is a fun theme to try - you'll already have all the right words to say! This way, you'll never forget a detail.
Some photo book sites (such as Printed Memories) will automatically upload dates from your social media and drop them in the photo book. So if you're not sure what happened when but have been avidly uploading to social media, you're good to go.
Spend Time on the Cover Photo
This tip is as important as all the others above (perhaps even the most important.) The cover of your photo book deserves some thought; it reflects the photo book in its entirety.
As mentioned above, you could find a map of the world and make that the cover of your travel photo book. Maybe you want a cover photo highlighting a special memory you made on your trip or the amazing people you met. Whatever cover picture you decide on, it should be something you love looking at - an image you're proud to show off.

Tips For Creating A Travel Photo Book
If you’re anything like me, your camera is one of the first things you pack when going on vacation. Whether it’s a high-end DSLR, a compact point-and-shoot or your smartphone, your camera is an invaluable tool for documenting all those unforgettable travel memories so you can relive them again and again.
Chances are, some images will end up on your social media channels so you can share your adventures with family and friends. But what about creating a hard-copy, printed memento that you can pull out whenever you want to travel vicariously (or whenever you’re next in lockdown) and remember your global experiences.
In this guide, I’ll share with you some of my top tips for designing a stunning travel photo book that will make the perfect centrepiece for your coffee table. It’s a great way of getting your travel images out of that digital folder and into a gorgeous presentation piece that will be a talking point with whoever visits your home.
Document the standout sights and all those in-between moments
Rather than being a collection of shots featuring you in front of iconic sights, a great vacation photo book tells the story of your adventures. So aside from documenting all those big-ticket moments (standing in front of the Eiffel Tower or atop the Great Wall of China), be sure to include some photos of your “down-time”. Perhaps it’s chatting with a local on a train journey or grabbing a traditional snack from a street stall. These are all moments that illustrate what it feels, sounds and tastes like to be in a completely different destination.
If you’re after more travel photography tips, be sure to check out our article here on how best to capture your adventures.
Photograph your accommodation
For me, travel is not just about ticking off sights but staying in places that embody the culture, style and atmosphere of a destination. I love finding unique guest houses or architecturally inspiring hotels to stay, which of course get to feature in my travel photo albums . Try to get a few shots of your accommodation as it appears on arrival, before your bags are set down and stuff inevitably overflows throughout the room.
Edit with a uniform aesthetic
Whether you’re just using your own images or combining them with your travel partners’ shots, try and create a uniform look during editing. In this way, your travel album images will feel like they’re part of the same body of work, rather than a hotchpotch of some sharpened shots, others saturated in colour and some in muted tones.
Alternatively, you might want to accentuate the difference by featuring your images on one side of the album spread and your travel partners’ on the other. This will illustrate the different ways you saw and captured the same sights and experiences throughout your trip.
Create a chronological layout
It’s not mandatory but I prefer organising my travel photo album images chronologically so that whoever is flicking through can get a sense of my journey. You might want to include a brief written introduction to explain where you were each day and what you saw, followed by a favourite image that represents the day. This is where journalling comes into play, as it will help you to remember what you experienced each day and the associated feelings. If you’re not into journaling, you might want to consider jotting down a few notes before you go to bed each day, so that you can easily recall your adventures once you’re back home.
Include an album preface
Alternatively, you might choose to write a short preface to your travel photo album , providing readers with an overview of your holiday. Why, where and when are a few things you should include, as well as who you travelled with and perhaps your reasons for choosing that destination. You can touch on some of the highlights from the trip and any insights you came away with as a result of your experiences.
Pick a minimalistic template
To ensure your travel photos can truly shine, opt for a minimalistic, clean template that won’t “clutter” the background. Stick with a crisp, white backdrop with a fraction of space between each image, which will allow each shot to clearly stand out.
Most templates will give you a variety of options when it comes to displaying your images, including full-page spreads and collage-style layouts where you can incorporate both portrait and landscape-oriented images. So take time to decide which images you want to feature alone and how best to combine multiple images across a single or two-page spread.
Add captions (or not!)
Some people like to add captions explaining where and when the image was taken, as well as any anecdotes that go along with it. Others prefer to let the images do the talking and allow the reader to fill in any gaps. If you do include captions, make sure you allow extra space in between your images so that the pages don’t end up crowded. Instead of captions, you might want to research and feature some creative quotes that accurately reflect how a destination made you feel.
Select your cover image
This is one of the hardest parts of designing a travel photo book – deciding on the image you want to feature on the cover. If your trip was taken with friends or family, then consider a shot of you together that encapsulates the bonding experience of your adventures. But if it was all about the destination, then perhaps you want to showcase an image that immediately transports you back there!

Create Beautiful Travel Photo Books with These Design Tips
Don’t let your precious travel pictures get stuck on SD cards, hard drives and computers–put them out into the world where you and your loved ones can enjoy them. My favourite way to display my many, many travel photos is through photo books. After years of making them (before and after becoming a graphic designer) I’ve learnt a few tips and tricks to help create the best-looking album, in the most efficient way. Here are some travel photo book ideas and tips to create a coffee-table-worthy memoir of your favourite pictures.
Why create a travel photo book?
Here are a few reasons why I find photo books the best for displaying travel snaps:
Portable – I take our latest travel book whenever we go visiting older relatives who are not using the internet and miss all our travel news throughout the year. They love hearing and seeing what we’ve been up to, and the books are easy to tote around.
Physical – Just pick it up and flip through the pages. No need to turn anything on or wait for it to load, it’s a more intimate, tactile experience than looking at photos on a screen. When we have guests, someone inevitably ends up picking one up and flipping through it–in this way they are also great for sparking conversations.
Decorative – Photo books make a beautiful addition to a coffee table. If you live in a rented space and can’t put things on the walls, you can still have your photos accessible and on display.
Keepsake – Travel photo books can be more than just pictures. You can include notes, scanned ticket stubs, an itinerary and excerpts from your travel journal to accompany your images. If you don’t have a travel journal, consider incorporating a travel quote–we have more than 100 fun, witty and inspiring travel quotes for your here .
How to make a travel photo book?
There are many companies that will help you create and print your photo book. I have tried a few and generally come back to Photobook . I’ve used their services wherever we have lived in the world i.e. Australia, Singapore and the USA. The quality of the books is always excellent and I prefer their creative tools.
Though I’m a graphic designer these days and could make my books in Adobe Indesign and have them professionally printed locally, Photobook makes it so easy to just upload and print the end result at such good quality, that I continue to use them. I find they are great value for money, especially if you subscribe to their email list and make use of their promotions. I even used their products to create a photo book of my wedding pictures.
If Photobook doesn’t work for you, my next go-to is Shutterfly . Their creative tools are simpler and less comprehensive than Photobook. This means there is less of a learning curve when getting to grips with their design software. The compromise is less design flexibility. Their print quality is excellent also.
Tips and tricks
1. conduct a photo exchange.
Before you begin editing and sorting your photos for your photo book, exchange pictures with your fellow travellers. Sometimes they may have captured a similar but better picture, or they may have pictures of you that you’d like to include in your album. Tools like Dropbox and Google Drive are helpful tools for exchanging photos at low to no cost at all.
Make your photo exchange immediately after you get home from a trip!!! There are a few reasons for this:
- Act while the trip is fresh in your co-travellers’ minds and they are enthused. The more time passes, the excitement of the trip wears off and is less present in peoples’ minds. Life takes over and sending copies of photos is not on other’s priority list.
- Many people don’t make backups. I asked a friend for copies of photos from a trip a few years before. Her hard drive had crashed in the intervening time and she had lost all her shots. She didn’t even realise she’d lost them until I asked for a copy! Not everyone has the same amount of sentimentality or are as diligent at backing up their files, so get a copy right away.
2. Choose a theme
It’s easy to let your travel photo book get out of hand and the more pages, the more it will cost to print. Select a theme for each book. Some ideas include:
- By calendar year – a travel yearbook of sorts.
- By destination. Combine several trips across geographic region, continent or country. e.g. Pacific Islands or South East Asia.
- By sights and/or experiences e.g. foodie moments, amazing architecture, historic sights, national parks or best beaches.
3. Scan your travel memorabilia
Next, ensure you scan any memorabilia that you would like to incorporate, such as ticket stubs, postcards, boarding passes, programs, maps etc. Type up any commentary, labels or snippets from your travel journal that you intend to include. It’s easier to proof read your text in software such as Microsoft Word, then copy and paste directly into your travel photo album.
4. Compile ALL your images
Load all photos into a folder on your computer named with the trip destination/s, month and year (or other preferred filing system). Don’t forget photos you took on your phone, GoPro and any device other than your camera. Add to this any scanned images from tip 3.
5. Sort and edit
Sort and select your best photos. Edit them first, before uploading them into your photo book creation tool of choice. Uploading high-resolution photos and previewing them in the online tools that photo book companies provide can be very time-consuming. This is a much more efficient way:
- Make a quick sweep over all the photos and get rid of the duds e.g. blurry, dark or otherwise irredeemable images. You can preview your images at a much larger size on your computer than your can in photo book software.
- Rename photos by location in itinerary order. It helps to have a copy of your itinerary handy as a reminder and to help spell tricky placenames. I label all photos with a number infront of it e.g. 01 Brazil, 02 Argentina, 03 Peru… That way, if I sort the folder by name, they fall in order of my itinerary, not in alphabetical order of the location.
- Preview and edit photos in your preferred software first. This could be the standard picture software on your computer or something more advanced like Lightroom or Photoshop.
- Shortlist the best photos to include in your photo book. Upload only those you’ve selected to the photo book tool you’re using. Online, photo book builders don’t provide a great way to preview images and uploading them all will make your job overwhelming. You can always add more later if you fall short of an entire book or you forget some shots.
5. Wrap your cover
If you’re using a DSLR or taking very high-resolution photos, you can use an image to completely wrap your travel photo book cover. Photobook offers other quality options such as leather covers, but I find the full cover photos most striking. While editing your images, consider which photos might make great book covers. You will want to choose an image in landscape format (vs portrait) so that it will wrap right around the book without stretching. Pick your numero uno, best of the best shot for your travel photo book cover.
6. Be a storyteller
Consider the story you are telling with your book. Ordering your photos or pages chronologically will take someone through your itinerary as you experienced it. This is especially important if you intend to accompany your images with your travel diary, or commentary along with your photos. This logical order helps your story to flow and make sense to someone who wasn’t there.
7. Make use of professionally designed templates
Photobook and similar online, photo book creation tools, have plenty of beautiful travel photo book templates to suit every style. Don’t worry, these templates aren’t rigid, they are just a starting point and a time saver. You can always tweak them to make your travel photo book 100% your own.
By using these templates, you will benefit from the expertise of professional graphic designers who consider size, proportion, spacing and typography to make your travel photo book the best it can be. You just drop in your photos and text and presto… you have a beautiful travel photo album.
8. Be consistent with colour
Consistency is key to making your travel photo book design more polished. Be consistent with any colour you add throughout the photo book, especially page backgrounds. Using 2-3 colours will help to maintain cohesiveness, and can bring together a group of photos with different colours in them.
Choose at least one light and one dark colour so that you will be able to create contrast between images taken in different lighting conditions. For instance, you might want a dark background for very light images and vice versa. That way your photos don’t melt into the page.
9. Maintain your font selection
As with colour, choose just a couple of fonts to work with throughout your travel photo book for a more professional design. Above are examples where I used one typeface for the title and another for the body text and used that system on every page! Also, be consistent with your text sizes across the entire book – meaning, use one size for all the titles and one for the body text, maybe another size for photo captions or quotes.
10. That one odd picture
Have you got that one awesome picture that doesn’t quite fit into the existing two-page layouts, but you really want to include in the book? Due to the way books are constructed there is a single page at the front and back, which are the perfect place to put that one odd image, and it doesn’t really matter if it’s out of chronological order.
11. Preview, preview, preview
Don’t skip previewing your travel photo book before ordering the print. It’s your last chance to pick up on any mistakes, misaligned photos or blank picture boxes. Once you’ve fixed any errors, preview again. I know at this stage you get anxious to see the final product in print, but don’t be tempted to shortcut this process.

Tips To Create a Travel Photo Album You'll Love
March 31, 2020
With the luxury of smartphones, nearly everyone walks around with a camera in their pocket at all times, snapping pics of everything that inspires them and collecting images of every important moment. Vacation pictures are high on the list of preservation priorities, but how do you display them in a perfect travel photo album if you’re not very experienced in photography?
Good photography can be tricky to master, and just because you have a phone in your pocket doesn’t necessarily mean you have the photography skills to capture the photos you want of your dream vacation. Although you’re sure to snap some of your own photos while on vacation, a great way to create a travel photo album is to hire a professional who can help you capture the essence of your trip and give you beautiful photographs for lasting memories.
Here are some great ideas for sharing your travel photos and tips on how you can create the perfect travel photo album.
Travel Photo Album Ideas
Aside from sharing your photos online, creating a travel photo album is the perfect way to take the photos you have and really share them with others. We all have photos on our phones or computer that we’ve taken and stored away—but how often do we pull them out and look at them? Will you even know where to find them 10 years from now? Creating a travel photo album is a great way to keep your most treasured vacation photos close at hand when you want to relive a good memory.
Your travel photo album can be anything you want it to be. A photo on your wall, a digital album to share online, or a traditional physical album you can open and share with friends and family. There are various sizes and materials you can choose from depending on the look you like best and how much time you want to put into the project. Here are some of the best travel album ideas for your vacation photos.
1. Create a Traditional Photo Album of Your Vacation
Photo albums come in many forms and sizes. You can use one meant only for inserting photos or create an album online and order a printed photo book version. Some vacation activity spots even have options available for professional photography, as well as packages available that include a travel photo album. This is particularly great for destination weddings and family photos taken on vacation because you don’t have to worry about anything except enjoying the moment.
At Adventure Photos, we make it easy to create a travel photo album that is fast and simple to put together—unlike traditional DIY scrapbooks or photo albums. We compile a travel photo album book that ships directly to your door so you have a physical keepsake of your vacation to share with family and friends as soon as you arrive home.
2. Make a Digital Photo Album
Another great travel photo album idea is to get a digital photo album. Digital photo albums make it easy to share your pictures with friends and family, no matter where they are. At Adventure Photos, we provide an online digital album of your professional vacation photos you can easily share to your social media accounts. This way you have long-term digital storage, as well as easy photo sharing online so you can tell people all about the fantastic time you had on your trip.
If you are taking photos at your destination wedding, Adventure Photos provides you with some sneak peek wedding highlight photos you can share before the wedding festivities are even over. This way you can be the first to post beautiful pictures of your big day to your social media feeds.
3. Display Your Vacation Memories on Canvas Prints
Sometimes you get a picture so perfect you just want to hang it on your wall. Getting a canvas print of your vacation is a great way to keep your vacation memories front and center in your home. Plus it’s something you can share with anyone who visits, and relive your vacation memories everyday.
Adventure Photos provides canvas print options and our professional destination photographers can help you get the perfect shot you’ll want to keep up on your wall.
Creative Ideas to Make the Perfect Travel Photo Book
If you’re more of a DIY person and enjoy compiling your vacation photos, vacation scrapbooks are a fun and creative way to design your travel photo book. Your local craft stores are jam-packed with patterned papers, stickers, and other fun embellishments you can use to make the perfect page for every vacation memory. Here are some scrapbooking ideas to make a travel photo book truly memorable.
1. Start with Professional Photos:
You’re ready to put time, effort, and money into making your scrapbook look amazing, start by getting the best vacation pictures possible for your travel scrapbook. Getting professional photos on your trip ensures you’ll have plenty of beautiful photos to work with, plus you’ll be more likely to remember where you were and what you were doing when you got your professional photos taken.
2. Plan Your Scrapbook Layout:
Start by laying out everything you need within easy reach and making a plan for how you want each page to look. If it helps, sketch out your ideas, or simply place everything where you plan to stick it before adding adhesive. This allows you to see the final product and make changes before committing to one design. It also helps you see how well everything will fit. For example, whether any photos need to be trimmed or any embellishments need to be added or taken away. If you have doubts about your design, look online for sample scrapbook page layouts that work for you.
3. Add Labels & Captions:
Your trip will most likely be an unforgettable occasion, especially if it involves a destination wedding, proposal, or other important events. However, you may not remember all the details in a few years. Add cute labels and captions wherever you can to preserve stories, dates, quotes, and anything else that is important to you.
4. Have Fun!:
Above all else, creating a travel scrapbook and getting travel photo book ideas should be fun.
How to Get Instagram Worthy Vacation Pictures
Instagram is the perfect platform to share your photos and videos with your friends and family. You might even have oogled over professional Instagram influencer profiles with stunning pictures and beautiful scenery. If you really want to step up your Instagram game and show off your vacation photos, your best bet isn’t to have a family member or stranger take your photos, but to hire a professional lifestyle photographer to get you the best vacation photos possible.
Get the Best Vacation Pics with a Photo Shoot on the Beach
Even if you have the newest smartphone with the best camera, it still won’t give you the same results as a professional who knows how to use the functions of their camera to capture the perfect lighting, take flattering photos, and tell a story through your images.
If you aren’t a professional photographer yourself, beach photos and outdoor photos on vacation can be especially tricky to capture. They can end up too dark, or fail to capture the look of the radiant, clear blue water you wanted to remember. Professional Instagramers aren’t posting mediocre photos, why should you?

More Travel Memory Book, Journal and Keepsake Ideas
We asked seasoned travelers how they preserve important details, memories and experiences of their vacations.
Hopefully these ideas will spark your desire to create a travel memory book in photographic or written form, or both!
Photo Books
Carly “Wayward” Heyward, Flight of the Educator says: I’m honestly so addicted to making my Shutterfly photobooks, that I’m not sure if I love traveling and then I make a book that shows it… or I love making books, so I have to travel to make them! Either way, I have 16 books documenting most of my travels to 51 countries on 6 continents.
What I like most about them is that if they are ever damaged, I could just order a new one. I can also share a digital copy for my friends and family that are unable to see the physical one. And they make great conversation starters (especially for friends thinking of going to those places).
I enjoy crafting each page and making them all look nice and unique. It’s also a wonderful way to reminiscence after a trip while cultivating the perfect pictures for the pages. Travel brings me joy planning the trip, during the trip, while making the book, and anytime I look at it for years to come.
To get the best possible deal (because they can get expensive very fast!), I go ahead and make my book. Then, when there’s a 40 or 50% off sale, I’m ready to go!
Travel Diary
Lauren Cocking, Northern Lauren says: I always document my (long-term) travels in a travel diary, but because I’m notoriously terrible at keeping up with writing entries, I ‘force’ myself to write just one page a day about what I did.
In fact, this page-a-day technique worked really well when I did my year abroad in Guadalajara, Mexico and I ended up with three mini travel diaries full of my experiences that I can look back on forever.
HOWEVER, I really outdid myself when I got back to the UK and decided to turn these journals into three MASSIVE scrapbooks of photos, receipts, tickets, wristbands and memories .
It took me as long to put them together as it did to write the journals and I don’t think I’d do it again (it took an age) but I’m really glad I went the extra mile for my year abroad travels.

Vintage Posters
Pete Brahan, Just Go Travel Studios says: I’ve always admired vintage National Park art. Last fall, I decided to try my hand at creating a similar style poster as a Christmas gift for my wife Amy to commemorate our love for National Parks.
A photo from a memorable family hike on the Bumpass Hell Trail at Lassen Volcanic National Park was chosen. I invested hours into locating a good font and experimenting to get the style and layout just right. My sister was enlisted for artistic feedback along the way.
When she saw what I was creating, she immediately requested I create a poster using a photo from her recent trip to the Grand Canyon. After testing the idea with a few other family, friends and National Park enthusiasts, I knew I had something special and showed Amy immediately (yes, before Christmas!).
We agreed to start a small business to share our passion for National Parks and allow others to have a unique way to document their travels. Just Go Travel Studios was born. Our mission is to help people plan, experience, and remember great vacations.
We believe that vacations are meant to be enjoyed before, during and after the trip, and we try to help in every area. We have also always given 10% of all profits to the National Park Foundation, as we feel it’s our way of giving back to the Parks that have given us so much.
For remembering great vacations, our most popular products are our custom, vintage-style travel posters and postcards created using photos from our customers. We work closely with our customers to add in personalized wording based on their trip experiences and accommodate their requests. We are dedicated to providing exceptional customer service from the moment the order is placed until the package arrives at their door.
The result is a memory that enables them to enjoy their trip forever.

Travel Scrapbook
Georgina Goodman, Georgina Does says: My boyfriend always asks me what I want for Christmas so I usually know what I am going to get. Last year he bought me a surprise gift and it was such a brilliant one!
Since January of this year, I have been filling it with photos, notes, receipts, even chocolate wrappers from weird stuff that you can’t get back at home. I love it and already it is such a nice memory of what I’ve done this year. I’m looking forward to when it’s completely full – hopefully I’ll still be able to close it!

Travel Postcards
Hannah Lukaszewicz, Getting Stamped says: My husband and I have been traveling for 4.5 years non-stop sharing everything along the way on our blog. Besides the blog, we also send ourselves a postcard from every country we go to.
We write a few notes about the country, our thoughts, and random things that are going on. It’s always an adventure to find stamps and a post office.
Our favorite postcard is from the Maldives, we were staying at a popular Maldives honeymoon spot and they turned this photo into a postcard for us. It’s fun to come home and find mail we sent to ourselves from the road.
→ Make custom postcards of your travels!
Travel Shadow Box
Megan Johnson from Red Around the World shares: Every time I go on a trip, big or small, I always come home with a million little tickets, business cards, and maps. I never knew what to do with them until one day I was perusing good old Pinterest and saw DIY shadow boxes .
I thought, “this is perfect!” So off I went to Jo Ann Fabric to find myself a shadow box, or four. I think DIY shadow boxes are a fun way to show off all the little stuff that you’re not quite sure what to do with.

Memorabilia Scrapbook
Justine Cross, Wanderer of the World says: When coming home from travelling, there are a few things I get excited about: showing reams of photos to my family, recounting my tales on my blog and creating scrapbook pages of mementos from my trip.
My scrapbook is rammed full of trip tickets, airplane tickets, luggage tags, even small pieces of foreign currency! I find this to be a great way of keeping all the little mementos gathered from a trip in one place.
I try to (artfully) arrange them in my travel journal so that I can always look back on exactly what we got up to during each trip – the more colour, the better!
With so many travels happening all the time, I can sometimes forget the smaller things about a trip. But my memorabilia scrapbook is an excellent way of jolting my memory! Plus, it’s also fun to create the pages!

Vacation Planners
Bernadette Jackson, A Packed Life says: It’s not surprising that someone like me with a passion for planners is also an avid travel journal keeper. It began when I started to forget details of the magnificent places we’d visited (ah Australia, how I wish I’d journaled you!), and has become part of my traveling ritual.
In fact, my travel journal is there on my list of essentials alongside passport and tickets. Over the years, my collection of travel journals has expanded to embrace all manner of journeys.
There are the journals of Big Trips, starting from the moment we hatched an idea and began to plan an itinerary. Then there’s my little book of weekenders: easy to pick up and throw in a bag at the last minute.
In these journals I can connect again with all kinds of memories; meeting a full time RVing couple at the march of the Peabody Ducks in Memphis, delicate scrolled wrapping tissue from a pharmacy in Cagliari, a gift of ice cold red pears roadside at the Col de Tende, and the changing cityscape of one of our favourite places, Ghent. When I’m not on the road, I can escape happily into those pages.

These are some great travel journals. I have never used one, but really want to now
Great suggestions. It’s hard to pick one!
Thanks for this! It’s inspiration to start the travel scrapbooks and compile years of iPhone photos in Shutterfly photobooks for my kiddos.
Shutterfly and Chatbooks really make it easy to compile phone photos into books. Enjoy the fun!
Useful article! I was just thinking about how to organize my photos. So many photos just got lost in my phone among all the screenshots and random things people send it chats. Would definitely like to keep a journal of sorts!
Good luck finding the organization method that will work for you!
Such unique and great ideas!
I used to have a travel scrapbook when I was younger but nowadays, it’s not practical anymore because I live in AirBnB’s and carry around all my belongings in my backpack. However, I use my instagram account to document my travels. Started only recently which is a pity. And my daughter gets a postcard from almost every place a visit (sometimes, I can’t find postcards) and I know that she keeps and collects them.
You should try sending your own photos as postcards if you can – I bet your daughter would love that!
Jamie-such a thorough and interesting post! Nice work!
Thank you for contributing! Your posters are such a unique way to document your travels!
Some of these look really fun! I dunno if I have the handwriting for some of them!
The important thing is getting the memories documented – and try not to worry about your handwriting! 🙂
What fun ways to document travels!
Thanks for contributing Hannah! I love the postcard idea 🙂

Five Best: Books on Building Design
A Pattern Language
By Christopher Alexander, Sara Ishikawa and Murray Silverstein (1977)
1. Before coming across “A Pattern Language,” I’d never seen anyone codify the factors that make places and cities successful from the perspective of users. Books on architecture tend to focus on designers, but Christopher Alexander and his co-authors put users’ feelings and experiences first. The book is a collection of 253 “patterns,” or design solutions, to the problems of humanizing the buildings around us. It looks at the extreme scales of citymaking—from how to lay out streets to how to position a marital bed. One pattern teaches us that balconies only come alive when they’re more than 6 feet deep: Unless they’re big enough for a table and some chairs, they’re likely to turn into dumping grounds for junk and bicycles. Another pattern asserts that people feel better when walls are thicker. Even the quality of light coming through windows is better when the wall edges surrounding them are thicker, because the edges bounce extra light, softening it from inside.
Antoni Gaudí
By Rainer Zerbst (1985)
2. It’s June 12, 1926, and Barcelona is in mourning. Thousands of people line the streets to pay their respects to Antoni Gaudí. Five days before, the man whom Rainer Zerbst describes in this biography as the “most ingenious of all architects” was hit and killed by a tram. But what starts out as a somber account is soon followed by joyous pages showcasing the life of Gaudí and his work. I bought this book 34 years ago at a student book sale in Brighton, England, and that very same now rather tatty copy still sits on the shelf in my London studio. Before stumbling upon it, I had no idea that buildings could look as Gaudí’s profoundly human designs do. It cracked open a view to a different kind of world. I suddenly realized that buildings didn’t need to be like all the depressing, cultureless new structures I’d been surrounded by in my childhood. Instead, they could—and should—give something back to the people.
De-Architecture
By James Wines (1987)
3. Pablo Picasso said that “art is a series of destructions.” James Wines set out to dismantle a rigid world of architectural theory in “De-Architecture,” his manifesto for his firm SITE (Sculpture in the Environment), which he founded in 1969. A sculptor by training, Mr. Wines explores the ambiguity of where sculpture ends and architecture begins. He teases modernism’s self-seriousness and suggests amazing alternative building designs, including an open-sided high-rise parking structure converted to contain hundreds of houses and gardens. The book had a powerful effect on me—during a formative time when I was first looking at the world of building design, wondering how to approach it with a more humanized mindset—and has as much relevance now as when it was first published.
The Death and Life of Great American Cities
By Jane Jacobs (1961)
4. This is the most famous and obvious book in my selection. Many building designers know about it, but its main points have been largely ignored by the construction industry. That’s a great shame, because it’s full of useful ideas for building designers, drawing attention to inhuman approaches to making cities. Jane Jacobs was a journalist and activist who trusted her feelings about the world around her. She criticized 1950s urban-planning policy, which she held responsible for the decline of city neighborhoods. She also found herself butting heads with Robert Moses, who had almost godlike powers in the state of New York to bulldoze through historic districts and break up traditional communities. But her book is also an incredibly moving love letter to our sidewalks and neighborhoods. It’s a career-affirming read for someone like me, even if it’s a bit long.
By David Macaulay (1973)
5. Cathedrals must be some of the most awe-inspiring buildings in the history of humanity. Rarely plain, often grand and majestic, the world’s most famous cathedrals seldom involved a single creative leader realizing an individual vision. Instead, the buildings came about through the cooperation and creativity of a vast collaborative team of master builders, craftsmen and skilled manual laborers. This highly illustrated book, written and drawn in pen and ink by David Macaulay, was given to me by my father when I was a child. It’s part of a series that also includes “Pyramid,” “Underground” and others. Describing the story of the construction of an imaginary cathedral, the book celebrates the makers of these world wonders, drawing attention to the vast array of different professions involved, including stone cutters, surveyors, masons, foremen and carpenters. For me as a 10 year old, the obsessively detailed black-and-white illustrations brought the fascinating process of building a cathedral to life. The intended audience might be school-age children, but adults can enjoy these wonderful drawings all the same. Plus there are lessons we can all learn from Mr. Macaulay’s book. Particularly, the importance of trying to build buildings that people will cherish for centuries, rather than for decades—buildings that nobody in their right mind would dream of demolishing.
