In addition, it is only a 30-minute drive from popular tourist destinations, including Disneyland Park and Knott’s Berry Farm, making it a great vacation spot. Other attractions include the San Joaquin Wildlife Refuge, the Orange County Safari, and the Irvine County Park.  

Franklin is a legendary town going back to 1799. This tiny village joins a big city venue that provides many unique attractions. The city offers Victorian and antebellum heritage, many museums, and a lively city center with outstanding shopping, world-class eating, spectacular entertainment, and cultural events. 

Remarkable Civil War structures are Franklin’s most considerable appeal, including Carter House, Lotz House, and Cranton — an 1864 historic residence and war site – all must-see attractions. The Cosmic Cavern is a rare hidden gem with stunning rock structures and two underground waterways that should not be missed.

Many tours are available for families, including an eco-boat journey to the isolated Manatee Hideout for six people. Art galleries, boutiques, and waterfront eateries are all within walking distance in the historic downtown district.  

The city of Chattanooga is situated on the Tennessee River in the Southeastern Tennessee Mountains. Known as one of the most beautiful cities in the country, it doesn’t take long for visitors to fall in love with it. Recreational adventures, world-class food outlets, and spectacular attractions await families in the area. 

It’s one of the most economical places to spend a few days away from the city. Rock City, a route through ancient rocky outcrops and meadows, and Ruby Falls, a 145-foot-high subterranean cascade, are two of the area’s most popular attractions. Several museums, state parks, archeological sites, and art museums await curious visitors. In addition to the Chattanooga Zoos at Warner Park, the city’s best family-friendly attractions include Lake Winnipesaukee Theme Parks and Coolidge Park.  

Dallas is the ninth-largest metropolitan area in the American States, home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, and among the most diversified cities in America. This city’s numerous sights and activities are incredible for a long vacation with the family. 

The Dallas Arboretum & Botanic Garden, the Dallas International Aquarium, and the Dallas Safari are just a few of the city’s cultural, artistic, and historical attractions. All of the red rock formations that protrude from the desert floor of Sedona’s Red Rock Country are multi-colored, producing a spectacular mood that changes with the changing light. 1.8 million acres of the forested area around this sacred area make it the ideal location for a relaxing vacation away from family. 

Activities such as bicycling, hiking, and bouncing jeep rides are every day here. Around 40 galleries, numerous spas, wineries, and vortex energy centers may be found in the vicinity. Among the must-see attractions in this region of Arizona are Montezuma Castle National Park and Tuzigoot National Monument, and the Dead Horse Ranch State Park.  

There are hundreds of miles of magnificent coastline, beaches, and distinctive neighborhoods in San Diego, making it an excellent place for families. The LEGOLAND theme park, the nearby San Diego Zoo, and the historical beachfront Belmont Park in Balboa Park are just a few of the many family-friendly attractions in the area. 

Ground to Sea Seal excursions, Macarthur military ship visits, and historical Old Town tours all take place in the area, which offers a wide range of recreational options for all ages. Neighborhoods like Little Italy and Point Loma have distinct attractions like the Sunset Cliffs and Petco Park. Downtown and Mission Beach also have attractions like the Pacific Beach Pier and Pacific Beach 

Walt Disney World is the most well-known attraction in Orlando, Florida, and it is easy to see why. Even though this city is the “happiest place on Earth” because of Cinderella’s castle, there is much more to do and see here. It appeals to a wide range of interests, including foodies, luxury shoppers, adventure seekers, and everyone in between. 

The Coca-Cola Orlando Eye, a 400-foot glass capsule, offers breathtaking city vistas. The Daytona 500 is a popular annual family event. Madame Tussauds Orlando, the Great Escape Room, and the Exotic Animal Adventure are just a few examples of the city’s unique attractions.

As a Gulf of Mexico island, Sanibel Island is known for its opulent resorts, gorgeous sunsets, and lighthouses. There are various beaches where shelling is commonplace, making it a popular alternative for families with young children. Swimming, snorkeling, sailing, and fishing are all popular pastimes in this area. 

San Carlos Bay-Bunche Beach Nature reserve, J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Reserve, and Lighthouse Beach Park are some of the area’s most popular attractions. The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, the Sanibel Heritage Museum and Village, the Pine Island Sound Aquatic Conservancy, and the Everglades are a few more must-sees in Fort Myers and the surrounding area.  

When it comes to bucking stereotypes, Louisville is the place to be. The only one of its kind, the Urban Bourbon Experience comprises a city-wide trail lined with artisan cocktail establishments, award-winning micro-distilleries, and displays, all of which contribute to the experience’s uniqueness. 

A variety of family-friendly activities, like the Louisville Slugger Museum & Foundry, the Churchill Downs, and the Muhammad Ali Center, can be found in this city that’s known for its horse racing. Children’s activities and attractions include Go Ape Zip Line & Treetop Adventure, Jefferson Memorial Forest, and Derby Dinner Playhouse. 

You can plan a vacation with a baby or even a young child during September and otherwise early May because they do not go to school, enabling you to save money by booking a room at a lower rate. Spring break and summer vacation are the best times to get away with your kids if they are in school. 

In the summer, many beaches are overcrowded, but cities tend to be less crowded, making them ideal for family vacations. Smithsonian museums in Washington DC are a great place for teenagers interested in learning about the history of the United States.

Cities and family vacations mostly on East & West Coasts, the Midwest, the South, and the Upper Midwest. Spend less than $100 per night in a national park cabin, campground, or online cheap vacation rentals if you’re on a limited budget. 

You can save a lot of money by cooking some of one’s food if you have access to a kitchen. Choosing a destination that offers a variety of free activities, such as hiking a scenic trail, an outdoor swimming pool, games, or a children’s club, is the most cost-effective option.  

Visit Maine’s scenic coast, a Vermont family resort, a New Hampshire Road trip, a Cape Cod beach vacation, and other family-friendly destinations during the summer. 

Family-friendly restaurants and outdoor theater performances are a great way to spend time with your kids while visiting New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia. Plan a winter vacation to a New England hill station like Stowe, Killington, or Sugarbush to teach your children how to ski, cross-country ski, or snowboard.  

Visit the beautiful coastal towns of California, have a blast at Disneyland, see the sights of Hollywood, and unwind for a few days at a full-service spa resort. Mammoth, Badger Pass, and Snowmass are some of the West Coast’s best family-friendly ski resorts. 

San Diego is a famous tourist destination for families with young children, with amusement parks and beaches, the New Children’s Museum, the Maritime Museum, and the city’s zoo to keep them entertained.  

In the $5,000 to $10,000 price range, you have the freedom to be as picky about your family vacation as you want to (although that will not include a business class plane ticket). For a villa in Fiji, the nightly rate can reach $900 for a palace in a five-star resort, with prices starting at $350. Families looking for a luxurious beach vacation should look no further than Barbados, Paradise Island, and Maui. 

Look for all-inclusive prices at Sandals resorts in Jamaica and Turks & Caicos, where kids of all ages can enjoy a wide range of exciting activities to save money. Much different room and suite arrangements are available for families, giving them the option to find the right balance between price and functionality. Consider family-friendly activities such as golf, spas, and fine dining when planning your luxury family vacation. 

Club Med’s Ixtapa luxury hotel in Mexico has a Baby Med plan that incorporates a cot, bottle warmers, and sanitary products in the room if you’re traveling with a young child.  

Remember that toddlers possess limited attention spans, are easily worn out, and require simple, entertaining activities like dumping water or transporting beans to keep them occupied. To keep them entertained for an extended flight, you will have to put in considerable effort, but it is possible. There is a good chance that they will want to share a hotel room with you, but they may not enjoy the food at the resort. 

As long as they’re not exhausted or hungry, having a lot of exciting things to recognize and do would be exciting. To make the most of your long weekend, choose an easy-to-reach destination that doesn’t require flying or dealing with jet lag. Longer trips can take advantage of great beaches where your child can run around freely, play in the water, and generally have a great time.  

If you consider talking to kids about many activities kids are involved in is truly astounding. A chef at the hotel might be willing to teach a 12-year-old how to cook with farm-fresh flavorings in a food festival. A local zoo’s polar bear exhibit may appeal to a 5-year-old-desire to observe a polar bear in action. 

A trip to Legoland may be the ultimate dream vacation for a 3-year-old fascinated by building various machines out of blocks and Legos. Fun memories are made on holidays that include a dash of adventure. Safari West in California is a great place to see a wide variety of animals in their natural habitat. 

Take a trip on the Disney Fiction, a big super ship with a lot to do and comfy staterooms with an additional half bath. Kids can experience horse riding and learn about the workings of a dude ranch at the Vista Verde Ranch in Colorado. Chile’s Lake Villarrica is a gorgeous lakeside retreat with a volcano view. 

You can go horse riding and tour a zoo while visiting the Pikes Peak area of Colorado. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly family vacation, Yellowstone, as well as Jackson Hole, are great options.  

Disney Cruises are so popular with children. Onboard each of Disney’s four ships is a theatre and a cinema where children can watch their favorite Disney films. Pools with water activities and other attractions are available.

Resort discounts are becoming more common, even during peak season, so don’t be ashamed to call the accommodation or resort immediately and ask for a mutually beneficial arrangement before booking. 

Discounts on hotel rooms, credits for dining and activities, and free shuttle service to and through the air terminal are all possibilities. You can stay updated on the children while still having some personal space on vacation by booking connecting rooms at most hotels. To get a great deal on a weekend stay in a major city like New York or Chicago, look for a hotel that offers a discount on vacations when there are no international tourists.

Figuring out where to take your family for a vacation is no easy feat when you have a baby or young kids. If you’re like me, you’re thinking about the “family-friendly” factor, and if it will be easy to bring a stroller around.

I’ve looked into where to travel as a young family, and the answers are varied. So, what better way to figure out the best family-friendly travel destinations than to ask my friends?

The list that follows comes from the real experiences of some awesome parents I know. Their travels started as early as when their babies were a few months old. Some of them continue to travel with kids, up to three of them!

I hope you get some great ideas for trip destinations by reading about these real trips that range from US towns and regions to international cities that require a flight.

Let’s jump right in!

Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada)

Halifax, Nova Scotia, blew away our expectations for a family-friendly travel destination just up north in Eastern Canada. It was our first time flying with a baby as well as our first time traveling in the Canadian Maritime region.

A few family-friendly things we were able to do were eat at restaurants that offered us high chairs, feed our baby anywhere on the Halifax Waterfront without anyone batting an eye, visit the Discovery Centre (science museum geared toward children) and mostly always find a restroom with a changing table (especially public washrooms).

While our hotel wasn’t necessarily a family-friendly hotel, we were delighted with the thoughtful touches for coming with a young child. Reception presented us with a hotel teddy bear upon arrival for our baby, as well as a baby toiletries set. It was so sweet. For more on that, see my review of the Muir Hotel .

Litchfield Hills, Connecticut

Neither Dan nor I knew much about the Litchfield County region of Connecticut, despite having grown up within a two-hour drive of the area. In my Googling of Litchfield when we decided to go, I found mostly upscale hotels, wedding information, girls’ weekend inspiration and dining guides.

After a three-day long weekend in Litchfield, though, Dan and I realized we had taken the best family-friendly trip we’d taken all summer. We saw lots of families with kids eating ice cream at Arethusa Farm Dairy , walked easy nature trails in the White Monument Nature Reserve with our baby in the baby carrier, visited Kent Falls State Park (older kids can go toward the water or up the steps near the waterfall) and took our stroller all around little towns like Kent.

One relaxing thing we did that children might like is the flower farm at White Flower Farm Store & Gardens . It’s a great place to teach kids about different types of flowers and plants.

New York City (+ Brooklyn)

NYC is an intensely exciting place for travel. Based on our experience going into NYC with our child, we wrote a guide on how to plan a trip to NYC with a baby to show you!

I think you’ll get lots of different opinions on this, and I’d say it depends how you “do” a trip to NYC . The downsides of a family trip to NYC are limited space when it comes to accommodation, LOTS of walking, lots of traffic and subway stations that have LOTS of stairs and might lack elevators.

Aside from these (very crucial) aspects, NYC has loads of activities, sights and landmarks that kids will love. Just take it from my friends who traveled all the way from Dublin, Ireland, to check NYC off their bucket lists, with their toddler ! They stopped at every playground in every park, marveled at the skyline with him and walked for miles (and were very good sports about it) with their stroller.

As someone who grew up as a kid in NYC (that’s me!), I can tell you that my favorite things to do as a kid in the city were visit the Bronx Zoo , the New York Hall of Science (where I had my fifth birthday party) and the New York Aquarium (an absolute must).

Other incredible things to take small kids to in NYC are the Central Park Zoo (I’m quoted in this Best Life article about one secret thing to see there) and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum . If your child is into playgrounds like I was as a kid, check out all the places to play at Brooklyn Bridge Park (there are 9 in total!).

Northern New Jersey (Essex County and Jersey City)

Now that we live in Northern New Jersey and have chosen to raise our daughter here, all the child-friendly things to do stand out to us. For starters, we know that if there’s a nice day out, we have a heap of choices of family-friendly things to do nearby.

As we mention in our list of the best day trips from NYC , a cute kid-friendly hiking path near us is the Fairy Trail at South Mountain Reservation (Millburn entrance). This easy hiking route is short, mostly flat and lined with tiny “fairy houses” made mostly by children!

For a place the whole family will enjoy, check out the Essex County Turtle Back Zoo . Parents from far and wide bring their kids out for a day at “Turtle Back,” and the highlights for us are the train ride, the giraffes, the bears and the small sea life pavilion.

Venturing closer to NYC will get you to Jersey City and the locally famous Liberty Science Center . This impressive museum has everything to amuse and entertain kids in an educational environment. There’s a planetarium, 3D films, rotating exhibitions and tons of cool things to see, hear and get your hands on.

Point Pleasant Beach, NJ & the Jersey Shore

For a lot of parents (and a lot of friends of mine), a beach vacation is where it’s at. Point Pleasant Beach in New Jersey comes recommended by my friend Jamie AND my friend Jordan .

Jordan told me, “We rent a house down there every year. Jenkinson’s Boardwalk is amazing for kids, and the beach is clean.”

When Jamie and her family rented a house at Point Pleasant, she came in from out of state with a 20-month-old and her three-year-old toddler. We came down for a day to visit with our seven-month-old baby! The beach is wide, the boardwalk has kids everywhere and for kids who like mini golf, there’s no shortage of that.

The Jersey Shore is where most families in the Philly-NJ-NY area choose to vacation for the summer, and you’ll see why.

Cancún, Mexico (Yucatán Peninsula)

Cancun and the Yucatan (where we’ve been to Valladolid and Mérida as a couple) is always going to be a travel favorite for American families. There are lots of resorts that cater to families with children of all ages, and quite a few friends of mine have made this part of Mexico their winter escape vacation destinations .

My friend Lauren stayed at Villa del Palmar in Cancun , and it also has a location in Cabo. Lauren rated this vacation by saying, “It’s a great kid-friendly place, and fantastic for kids with their water slides, and free kids clubs from 9-4!”

As for the “kids clubs,” Lauren said it was a “great escape for the kids from the sun, and for me, (an escape) from them! These resorts have babysitters so you can go out at night.”

Cancun was also the first vacation my friend Kruti took with her young baby. Her family went to Cancun and stayed at The Grand at Moon Palace , an all-inclusive resort that they definitely found to be family-friendly!

Kruti said that the resort had “something for everyone, with lots of activities for kids, and it’s stroller-friendly.” Their baby was only three months, at the time (they are all-star travelers!), so they kept her in her bassinet most of the time with a stroller fan, and she was able to kind of “lounge and hang out alongside us.” The resort also had an amazing kids club and water park.

Last year before the baby, Kruti and her husband went to a different all-inclusive resort in Cancun, with her sister’s two kids (ages 6 and 3, at the time). They stayed at Finest (part of the Excellence collection) and found that it was an awesome resort for having little ones!

At the Finest in Cancun, Kruti says the food was great and always easily accessible with room service options, too. The hotel was super accommodating to allergies and dietary restrictions, which is helpful for children who are eating the hotel food.

Her family also had a swim-up suite (great idea!), which was brilliant for toddler naps: “The kids could be sleeping inside the room, and we’d be right outside with a monitor, hanging poolside!”

Lisbon, Portugal (and other parts of Portugal)

Lisbon is one of my favorite European travel destinations, and Dan and I stayed in Lisbon before road tripping to villages in the south of Portugal . We went back a second time a few years later because we love it so much, and have dreamed of going there as a family one day.

My friend Bona beat me to, it though, and went to Portugal as a family of three with her husband and their baby. They went to Portugal because doing a longer trip is more budget-friendly than the same amount of time in neighboring European countries. Bona said that of all the European countries, Portugal seemed to be the most affordable. I agree!

Additionally, Bona reminded me that there’s very little language barrier in major cities in Portugal: English is widely spoken, so it’s easy for American travelers to get around. Especially with having a baby or children, I think one of the greatest fears for traveling is having an unexpected situation and not being able to communicate about it.

Starting in Lisbon, they took my recommendation for accommodation and stayed at the Lisboans Apartments . Bona detailed all about how it was great for having a baby, which you can read in my review of the Lisboans Apartment-Hotel .

At the Lisboans, Bona and family stayed at a large one-bedroom apartment for about $250 a night. As the Lisboans is located right next to the Alfama District, it was central to nearly everything in Lisbon.

Hotel accommodation in Portugal with a baby

Bona said that regarding hotels in Portugal, “Every place we stayed provided a clean high chair, baby bathtub, and Pack’N’Play . There’s also a service called Let’s Go Baby where you can rent baby gear and they will deliver it to your hotel or Airbnb. They SAVED us when we were looking for a specific baby bottle brand after our baby was rejecting the one we had switched to, just weeks before!” Sounds like she chose right and did her research!

Priority service in Portugal for young families

In Bona’s experience, families with babies can cut the line for any tourist attraction or government facility.

“As soon as we landed in Lisbon, there was an employee pointing young families (including those with toddlers) to an expedited customs line. Then for sightseeing with our child, we got priority for the Belem Monastery, Peña Palace and more!”

Getting around with a baby in Portugal

When I was in Lisbon, it was soon apparent that public transport was plentiful and easy to figure out. Dan and I rented a car in Lisbon to drive to the Algarve, and that was pretty straightforward. Bona and her husband rented a car and noted that they could keep a car seat in the vehicle.

“It’s worth noting that Lisbon is mostly cobblestone and hills, so it’s tough for littles, but a good way to wear them out!” she says.

Restaurants in Portugal if you have kids

Bona said that after dining in restaurants in various parts of Portugal, “They literally don’t care if you have a kid. We went to a nice restaurant, and our table had a high chair waiting for us. We did not expect that! And all the wait staff came to say hi to our baby!”

A few more child-friendly places in Portugal

A couple more places that Bona traveled to in Portugal with her baby were:

This is a historic town outside Lisbon with castles. She did a day trip, but noted that you can easily go longer. Her favorite was the Quinta de Regaleira , “as there was more nature and places for kids to run around (versus Peña Palace, where it’s an indoor guided museum, so there’s lots of standing around and feeling stuffy).”

Morgado do Quintao

This is a vineyard (and also a hotel to stay at) in the Algarve. The restaurant does a lunch with wine pairings on the vineyard under a 2000-year-old tree. “We actually met another couple with a baby who was born the day before our baby!” Bona says.

Chicago, Illinois

While I haven’t gone to Chicago yet as a parent, my friend Marisa from The Neon Tea Party sure has, with her toddler! She cited the Shedd Aquarium and going to a Cubs game as the top things to do with a little kid in tote.

Marisa told me, “ The Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium are next to each other, so you can do them back to back! And, the Cubs game was a blast.” If you’re into baseball, you can bookmark the Cubs games schedule .

Chicago also is home to lots of kid-friendly food options for families, like the places with kids menus in this list of kid-friendly restaurants in Chicago from Eater .

Like many big cities in the US, Chicago makes a great spot for taking your kids. Just make sure to go in spring, summer or fall, unless you have a love for the bitter Chicago winter!

Medellin, Colombia

I know what you’re thinking: Medellin? Colombia? Our friends Alex and Ryan are American expats living in this city with their toddler daughter and have all the kid-friendly recommendations for Medellin. We went to visit them when our daughter was 14 months old and we had a BLAST!

For couples who want to experience South America safely and in a family-friendly way, Medellin is a cool choice. The city is a growing hotspot for international expats and nothing is stopping families with young kids from calling it home!

According to Alex, there are lots of child-friendly things to do in Medellin, and for that reason, it’s an adventurous (yet also safe) place to travel once you have a growing family.

Things to do with your littles include visiting the Sunday Ciclovía (closed roads for walking, running and biking), Chocolate Tour , Botanical Gardens & Parque Explora , Plaza Mayorista market and taking day trips to the countryside, like to Guatape .

For where to stay with a baby or kids in Medellin, we 100% recommend Casacol’s Loma Verde Aparthotel building , which is where we stayed. We got a two-bedroom apartment for four nights, and our daughter had her own room. We cooked in the kitchen so that we could always prepare her food. Our room had a baby bath, travel crib and high chair. See more at our Casacol accommodation review .

We even were able to get a medical referral from the concierge, for a doctor for our toddler when she had a fever (which led us to this list of tips for what to do if your child is sick while traveling ).

In collecting this list of kid-friendly vacation destinations, my friend Sarah reminded me about Boston! Boston is somewhere my family went when I was a kid, and we’d stop on the way when we’d visit my cousins in New Hampshire.

From Sarah’s experience visiting Boston with her toddler and baby, she says that, “Boston has a nice children’s museum and aquarium!” Other family-friendly ideas include a whale watching tour , walking in Boston Common and Boston Public Garden, and visiting the cute Make Way for Ducklings sculpture . For older children, follow the “Freedom Trail” walking path through the city. It leads to all the great historic landmarks.

I have two friends ( Ariella and Masha ) who live in Boston with babies and toddlers, too. My friend Ariella noted that, “Things are relatively close by in Boston, which is nice!”

Masha said families visiting Boston for vacation should check out the Boston Children’s Museum , The New England Aquarium in Boston , beautiful towns north of Boston (with lots of ice cream shops!), local coastal beaches and farms all over the greater Boston region. She recommends Connor’s Farm in Danvers, MA, and next to it is the (seasonal) Topsfield Fair , which is really fun for kids.

”We also just went to a whale watch,” Masha said. “I wouldn’t take my “non-chill toddler” there again until he’s older, but if he was chill, it’d be more fun!” To top off her suggestions, Masha said that, “ Southwick’s Zoo is amazing for kids.”

York, Maine (Southern Maine)

Maine is a lovely destination for vacations of any type, but my friend Breanne has the suggestion of York, Maine, as a family-friendly travel idea. York is only 10 miles into Maine from the border with New Hampshire, and if you were to keep driving, you could take the family onward to Portland, where I’ve gone on vacation!

“I grew up going to York, ME, and it was natural that was one of my daughter’s first trips. It has beaches, outdoor restaurants, candy and taffy-making stores and picturesque walks,” Bre says.

As a few highlights or sights to visit, Bre’s list of where to go with her baby or kids near York, Maine, includes candy shop Goldenrods , the easy ocean-side walking trail Marginal Way , Long Sands Beach , Chauncey’s Lobster Pound and the famous Nubble Lighthouse (which has a Just for Kids part of its website )!

Lastly, Breanne’s infant daughter really liked visiting York’s Wild Kingdom , a zoo and amusement park that also has a mini golf course.

The Dominican Republic

Every winter, the white beaches and blue ocean waters of the DR beckon me. And for some of my friends, they chose a family-friendly resort vacation in Punta Cana!

My friend Alex and her husband took their toddler to Finest Punta Cana , an all-inclusive resort also by the Excellence Collection. Traveling with a toddler is far from easy, and staying at a proven place for families like a kid-friendly hotel is key.

Alex’s resort had quite a few specifics just for little kids, from the Imagine Kids Club to three different pool areas, including a splash pool for the smallest children, to mini water parks for older kids. A “Stay & Play” area is the indoor-outdoor location for small kids to play while adults can supervise and stay safe.

There’s also a naptime room, and the “Imagine Lounge” where childcare is available if parents want to soak up some alone time.

We went to the North Coast of The Dominican Republic before we had our daughter. We’d totally go back with her and show her everything we liked about our trip.

My friend Becca and her husband Jacob, who we know from the Remote Year traveling community, went away with their infant daughter for a month, to work remotely and travel in the warm sun of Costa Rica.

They stayed in Playas del Coco , which is a family-friendly area of Costa Rica’s coastline where families with a baby or young kids can hop into a range of tropical activities. To learn more, I’d guide you to this list of family activities to do in Playas del Coco from Letstravelcostarica.com.

But wait, my friend Ariella went to Costa Rica with her baby and her husband around the same time, for more than two weeks! They were looking forward to this family vacation for months , ever since their baby was born.

“We went to Costa Rica partially based on stability, the medical system and the weather,” Ariella told me. “Then, we did not do much while there, which was what we wanted. I would say it was baby-friendly other than the non-major roads, but our daughter seemed cool with bouncing around in her car seat!”

French Riviera & South of France

My world-traveling friend and mom friend Kruti said her and her husband’s France trip with their 9-month-old to St. Tropez and Cannes was great.

“Overall, we felt that France was super baby-friendly!” she said. “There were clean changing facilities everywhere, high chairs at every single restaurant, and baby food options were available at every restaurant and hotel.”

In true European style, she said it felt like kids were encouraged to join so many “seemingly adult activities.” They were able to bring the baby on wine tours, and even to a bunch of day clubs in Cannes and St. Tropez.

“We brought her to Nikki Beach , but a friend of ours went to Gigi, a day club that has a section of their venue called Gigi Circus , a whimsical play area just for kids of all ages!”

Montego Bay, Jamaica

My friend Becca (yes, I have a friend Becca!) went on a family vacation with her young toddler daughter to Palladium in Montego Bay . Jamaica is another favorite for getting away from cold parts of the US during the cooler months of October to March!

Like other resorts, the Palladium has a kids’ club that offers theater shows, face painting, arts and crafts and a baby club for children between ages 1-3. There is supervision from caretaker staff so that parents can get some alone time at the beach or pool.

Atlanta, Georgia

I probably would not have considered Atlanta as a family-friendly city until my friend Melissa mentioned it. She highlighted the walkable areas and spacious restaurants you’ll find in Atlanta that make bringing her three kids there a treat!

Atlanta has “tons of playgrounds, the Georgia Aquarium , Coca-Cola Museum , sports museums and the zoo ,” she said. “Plus, it’s dog-friendly!”

“We had a great day once doing pottery, having lunch and then going to a playground,” Melissa concluded, about a visit to Atlanta with three kids under 10 years old, including a toddler.

What makes a destination “family-friendly”?

I asked myself this as well, as I was writing this list and interviewing my friends (who are very good travelers). What comes to mind for me, as a parent with an infant, are things like restaurants that don’t mind babies, restrooms that have changing tables and being able to freely feed a baby on the go in various spots.

For a toddler, my friend Ariella reminded me that children who can walk will be curious, and will always want to stop and play! “Family-friendly” for having a toddler means factoring that into car trips to stop at kid-friendly places where there are playgrounds.

With older kids (who have opinions), they will want to be part of the vacation planning, and will groan if something isn’t exciting enough. Traveling with older toddlers or elementary-school-aged kids means lots of action, fun and engaging activities.

To “resort” or not “resort?

One thing is for sure and that is that traveling with a baby, a toddler or kids is hard . While Dan and I are not the “resort types” of travelers, we know that a lot of parents want their first (or second or third) trip with a baby or kids to be at a resort because it can be simple. At a resort, especially an all-inclusive, your room ate already includes everything, and there are even kids clubs and babysitting options!

Going to a resort can also be great for traveling with extended family, so that everyone can relax, be near the beach and hit the pool, too.

If you’re not a traveler who books resorts, don’t worry. This list includes big US cities for family-friendly travel ideas, as well as smaller and lesser-known destinations that will keep kids happy and will be easier with a baby.

Domestic or international?

Deciding to travel domestically within your home country or internationally is ultimately up to parents, when looking for a family-friendly vacation! Dan and I love traveling internationally and seeing other parts of the world. We also like staying within the US and visiting friends and family, while doing things that are new for us in those places.

I received a variety of responses covering an amazing variety of family-friendly destinations from all over the world. From winter holidays in the Arctic to desolate beaches in the Pacific, from city breaks to ski resorts – there is something in here for everyone.

I’m happy to say that some of the world’s most well-traveled families have helped with this article. These are one by one families that have seen a lot of the world and they share their absolute favorite places to travel with family that they keep on going back to .

1. Daintree Rainforest, Australia

One of our favorite destinations for families is the Port Douglas Daintree region in Tropical North Queensland .

Port Douglas has the largest reef system and the oldest rainforest in the world to explore. What more can you ask for? Our girls loved snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, zip-lining over the canopy of the Daintree Rainforest, playing on stunning beaches, searching for wild crocodiles on riverboat cruises, and enjoying delicious exotic ice cream made from the rainforest fruits.

It’s a relaxed and beautiful tropical destination with plenty for all members of the family to love.

There are few places in the world that offer the opportunity for a family adventure like Iceland .

Where else can you spot Blue Whales from a schooner, swim in ice-cold glacier water while continents tear themselves apart around you, and feel the roar of Europe’s largest waterfall, all within a few hours drive of each other. If that isn’t enough to whet your appetite, Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world. You can even lookup the Prime Minister in the phone book.

Icelandic people understand the unique needs of children and families. It’s rare to find a restaurant that doesn’t have an area set aside for children to play.

Furthermore, Iceland is really easy to visit on your own. In summer, you can drive the entire Ring Road , or just focus on the South Coast attractions – there’s plenty to see and do, also with kids. If you don’t feel like driving in Iceland in winter , you can just stay in Reykjavik and make a couple of day trips.

3. Bali, Indonesia

Recommended by Eric from Travel Babbo.

Bali has become one of our favorite family travel destinations the past couple of years. There’s a perfect mix of beaches and culture, and there’s always something to do, from attending festivals (which seem to take place all the time) to visiting water parks to hiking through rice fields.

The weather is warm year-round, although the rainy season (November through March) is exactly what it sounds like. The food is excellent and inexpensive. My 10-year-old’s favorite restaurant in the world is Cuca, near Jimbaran Beach.

Bali’s hotels are amazing, and virtually all welcome kids. We’ve stayed at hotels on the beach, but also in villas with private plunge pools overlooking river valleys and villas surrounded by rice fields. We always try to do activities through our hotels, like fish feeding, anti-gravity yoga, rice planting, ceramics, and local walks. We’re never ready to check out.

Even though there are more tourists every year, Bali never feels touristy. Ubud retains a really cool, artsy vibe. Plus there’s a monkey forest there – what kid doesn’t want to be surrounded by monkeys?

4. Costa Rica

Recommended by various families, including us.

Costa Rica is one of the most recommended family travel destinations in the Americas. It has all the ingredients for a perfect family-friendly travel experience: tropical climate, beaches, rainforests, lots of sightseeing possibilities, fun adventurous activities, and a big variety of wildlife.

No matter what kind of a family travel experience you’re looking for, Costa Rica makes it all possible.

The Greek island of Crete is somewhere we’ve frequently holidayed as a family. Crete has everything we could possibly want – a lovely climate, pure relaxation, great beaches, excellent food, and a beautifully slow way of life. There are some superb hotels on the island too!

We’ve often been drawn to a small fishing town Elounda which has some excellent luxury accommodation and plenty to see and do.

If you are looking for a family-friendly destination in southern Europe, a place that has is all, then you can’t go wrong with the Greek Islands and especially Crete!

6. Whitefish, Montana, USA

If you are thinking about experiencing what a winter wonderland would be like, our recommendation is the Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort in Montana, USA. The resort offers many family-friendly amenities and activities including daycare and kids ski & ride school directly on the resort.

Enjoy some outdoor winter fun with snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing or sledding; then cozy up by the fire with some hot chocolate.

The resort and city of Whitefish offer a small-town American feel where life slows down for a while but still offers a great selection of hotels, restaurants and shopping.

7. Gulf Shores, Alabama, USA

Gulf Shores, Alabama is perfect for families because it’s got all the beach without all the crowds!

We love Gulf Shores for its white sand, seashells, sunsets, and seafood. But what makes it special is the space — wide beaches and smaller crowds mean we have more space to unwind.

Gulf Shores is more than a beach, though. We also enjoy hiking and biking the trails at Gulf State Park, catamaran day trips, paddle boarding and sunset dinners at local restaurants. It’s our home away from home — at the beach!

8. Cape Town, South Africa

Everything about Cape Town is simply breathtaking! Nestled beneath the unmistakable Table Mountain, many start their South African adventure at the lively V&A Waterfront.

Near to the city, you will find the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens and Tree Canopy Walkway, the Table Mountain Cable Car or why not take a ferry and tour around the now infamous Robben Island?

Heading further out of Cape Town for a couple of days is a must – head to where the oceans meet at the Cape of Good Hope, visit the Penguins at Boulders Beach and spot the seals at Hout Bay.

Next head east to the Stellenbosch wine region – so many family-friendly wine farms it’s hard to choose where to start. Finish off your Cape Town adventure with a simply breathtaking sunset over the Atlantic Ocean from Signal Hill or Camps Bay.

If you are looking for a truly unique family vacation destination, then definitely consider Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It’s such a special place (and totally different from anything else on this list), but it has so much to offer for families!

From beaches to deserts, impressive skyscrapers, and sensational attractions for the whole family, there’s so much to see and do in Dubai that you can easily fill several family vacations here and never get bored.

Visit the world’s highest building, ride a camel in the desert, spend time at one of the many theme parks, or go swimming at some of the world’s most impressive water parks… These are just a few of the amazing things to do in Dubai with kids !

And while visiting a destination like this with the whole family can quickly get quite expensive, there are quite a few really nice free and cheap things to do in Dubai as well.

Furthermore, Dubai enjoys warm weather the whole year round (albeit a bit too hot in the summer months), and it’s a perfect family vacation destination for off-season travel as well.

What we also love about Dubai is that it’s extremely multicultural, and kids can get in touch with different traditions. We were pleasantly surprised by the food in Dubai as well! With so many cuisines and middle-eastern touches, the food is absolutely delicious. It’s also another great way to introduce your children to different cultures.

10. Cambodia

Most people don’t think of Cambodia as a family-friendly destination, but we wholeheartedly disagree! The country is full of stunning nature and some of the most beautiful temple ruins in the world.

Our toddlers loved exploring the ruins as much as we did! For our kids, the ruins were the ultimate playground. Each equipped with crumbling stairs to climb, plenty of rocks and leaves to play with, and even some wildlife to watch. It’s a great way to challenge their senses and it gives you a chance to enjoy them yourself – a double bonus!

Cambodians are some of the friendliest people in Southeast Asia. They love to stop you and chat about your children and give friendly pats and pinches. For those with really young ones- they even help to watch your children while you get a few mouthfuls of food in!

11. Rovaniemi, Finland

If you ask our kids out of the 67 countries they have been to in their 6 years of life, which was their favorite, they would unanimously agree – Finland . More specifically Rovaniemi to the North of Helsinki. Why? So many reasons!

First, it’s where the real Santa lives. When you send a letter to Santa it goes here. You can see all the pigeon holes from around the world with letters to Santa. You can even post your own! You can spend an evening with the elves in the forest, decorating trees, baking cookies, and learning Santa secrets.

In addition, when you are not visiting Santa, you can spend days doing all kinds of fun winter outdoor activities. Ride husky sleds through a winter wonderland, take a reindeer sleigh through the forest, opt for a snowmobile safari that also visits reindeer and huskies, or go snow tubing down giant hills and through ice caves.

Top that with snowmobiles to capture a glimpse of the Northern Lights and a hot dinner of reindeer meat and what could be more perfect?!

12. Portugal

Central Portugal has been a family favorite for us since my parents emigrated there a few years back. The area has such a laid-back vibe, great food, culture, and beautiful scenery.

For adventurous families, there are activities like cycling, hiking, and kayaking. But my kids equally like exploring little old villages up in the mountains which haven’t changed for ages, so long as there’s ice cream at the end of it!

The Portuguese love children and you’re welcomed wherever you go with genuine smiles and warm hospitality. Add to this the warm sunshine and you have the formula for a relaxing, easy holiday.

13. Philadelphia, USA

Philadelphia is close enough to home that it has been a frequent day trip for us. Now that we travel with a child we have begun to stay for a night or two, which has given us a new appreciation for all that this city has to offer for families.

Federal Hall is a must-see on your first visit (the Declaration of Independence was signed here). The city also has a lot of family-friendly museums.

Please Touch Museum will be a hit with younger kids, while school-going children will appreciate the Franklin Institute and the sprawling Museum of Art.

Philadelphia is also known as a great city for eating out. I recommend Federal Donuts near Rittenhouse Square, Hawthorne’s near South Street and Reading Terminal. Great city break for families.

14. The Canadian Rockies

As a family who wants to see as much of the world as possible, it’s rare for us to visit the same destination twice. But there is one place we return time and time again: The Canadian Rockies .

The Canadian Rockies are one of the most naturally beautiful wonders on earth. The mountains have a rugged, majestic appeal. Nestled between them are glacial lakes that shimmer a vibrant shade of blue.

Banff National Park, located in the heart of the Rockies is one of the most family-friendly places we’ve ever visited. The establishments are very accommodating to children, and the area is great to explore with kids.

Banff is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. You’ll find everything from easy hikes to backcountry camping and winter mountain sports. We love exploring outdoors and hope to instill that same passion in our daughter. I can’t think of a better place to do so.

15. Cook Islands

One of our favorite family destinations is the Cook Islands in the South Pacific . For West Coast travelers it’s a short overnight flight with only a 3 hour time change.

The largest and main island, Rarotonga, is actually quite small with a ring road only 29 miles long! You will be welcomed to the island by beautiful white beaches with excellent snorkeling in calm lagoons and lush green mountains as your backdrop.

With plenty of adventure activities from hiking to buggy driving to kayaking to private islands, your family will have the time of their life in this island paradise!

16. Glacier National Park, USA

Glacier National Park is one of the most visited National Parks in the USA and for a good reason. It’s also an amazing family travel destination! The views are out of this world, hiking is amazing, and there are so many fun activities for the whole family!

We really enjoyed driving the scary yet breathtaking beautiful Going to the Sun Road. You can see glaciers, waterfalls, and stunning mountains. There is also so much wildlife and you may even see a mountain goat, bighorn sheep, or a bear! We really enjoyed hiking to Hidden Lake, on the Trail of Cedars, and Apakuni Falls.

Each hike has something to offer from being able to step into the frigid cold glacier water, to seeing amazing waterfalls, or a lake surrounded by mountains. Everywhere you turn in Glacier National Park you are met with a view more beautiful than the last!

17. Big Island, Hawaii, USA

Our family’s new favorite destination is the Big Island of Hawaii . Hawaii is such a special place but the Big Island really takes the cake. You can do everything here!

You can swim with turtles , stay in beautiful resorts, enjoy a luau, go whale watching and snorkeling, hike to waterfalls, visit a volcano, and even sail in a submarine.

The Big Island is great for families because it’s easy to rent a car, drive around and enjoy something new every day. There’s no excuse to be bored on the Big Island!

18. Florence, Italy

Our favorite family travel destination so far has been Florence in Italy . And yes, it’s a city, but Florence is wonderful for families because there is so much to do and see both indoors and outdoors!

It is a great city to walk around in and explore and make memories that will last a lifetime. The whole family will enjoy the delicious Italian food, culture, and attractions.

In addition, Florence is located in the heart of Tuscany region with the beautiful rolling hill landscapes, charming little towns, and the most friendly locals that absolutely adore children!

Tuscany is indeed a wonderful region for a family vacation and Florence is the most beautiful of the Tuscan towns . Rent a villa or look for a nice hotel with a pool, and you can have the best family trip ever – a perfect combination of sightseeing and a relaxing vacation.

19. Hamilton, New Zealand

Our favorite family travel destination is Hamilton in New Zealand . Hamilton is New Zealand’s best-kept secret when it comes to family holidays.

Our favorite activities include the Waikato Museum with its dedicated kid’s discovery areas; the Zoo where cheeky Kaka land on your shoulder in the walk-through aviary; and the themed Hamilton gardens which will transport you into a new civilization at every turn!

But what really sets Hamilton apart are the many ‘destination playgrounds’. These amazing parks have the usual fun fixtures, water features, in-ground trampolines, and multi-story playhouses. Great for keeping the little ones busy while you enjoy coffee from a nearby cafe!

20. Florida Keys, USA

When thinking about traveling to Florida with the kids the first place to pop into your mind is probably Orlando. Perfect if you’re looking for thrill rides, but the Florida Keys can offer families the chance to experience the more natural side of the state, specifically Marathon .

Take in a little history exploring the oldest home in the Florida Keys outside of Key West as well as remnants of the Flagler Railroad that connected all of the Florida Keys.

Kids, especially those too young to enjoy more adventurous water pursuits, will love a nature scavenger hunt, swimming with fish, or meeting rescued birds at the Wild Bird Sanctuary. You can even enjoy lunch under a large tiki hut restaurant just off of the scenic Seven Mile Highway.

Marathon also makes a great family destination due to how close it is to the other islands such as Key West and Islamorada. This amazing place proves that your Florida family vacation adventure doesn’t have to include any roller coasters.

21. Dordogne, France

Recommended by Kirsten – Kids are a Trip.

The Dordogne region in France is one of our favorite places to explore as a family. With beautiful castles, rivers for canoeing, and medieval towns for exploring, it is the perfect place to get away from everything and spend some quality time with your kids.

We especially enjoyed the bucolic landscape and the friendliness of the locals and found there was plenty to do for families.

22. Swiss Mountains

Our personal recommendation.

This list wouldn’t be complete without me sharing at least one of our personal favorite family destinations as well. And if I have to choose just one, it has to be Switzerland!

Switzerland in general, and the Swiss mountains , in particular, has been one of our favorite travel destinations for years. We just love the Swiss Alps!

We try to go to Switzerland at least twice a year: skiing in winter and hiking in summer , and every time we don’t want to leave. Kids have asked several times if we could just move to Switzerland…

Charming mountain villages and small towns have such an amazing atmosphere that is hard to find anywhere else in the world. Add to that stunning landscapes, great food, and a huge variety of things to see and do for families with children, and you cannot go wrong planning a family trip to Switzerland.

TIP: Some of our favorite places include the Lucerne area , Zermatt , Mt Titlis , Grindelwald , Jungfraujoch , and Schynige Platte , to mention just a few.

Hi Chitra, that's a tough choice indeed. Purely season-wise, I'd look into Southern Hemisphere for November I suppose. South Africa is amazing for a family trip and Namibia as well. Also Thailand could be a great option or Australia if you have more time. There are so many options. It also depends on where you live and how much time you have. We have quite some articles about the destinations mentioned above on our website, you can use the search button for some inspiration. Good luck!

There are many places that are not too warm in August. UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia, also pretty much anywhere in Poland or Baltic States. If you are looking for destinations around the world, consider South Africa or Namibia (more nature), and certain parts of Australia (also cities). There are plenty of options. :) Good luck!

Ha ha, I could easily add a few dozen other places to this list. There are so many amazing destinations all over the world, and more places are family-friendly than people tend to think. Our personal favorite countries to visit with kids are Italy, Portugal, and Switzerland. Happy travels!

Iceland vs. Costa Rica? They are so different... CR is warm, tropical, with beaches and pools, lots of fun outdoor activities, wildlife, and it's rather cheap compared to Iceland. Iceland is amazing but in a very different way - incredible vast landscapes, the most beautiful waterfalls, glaciers, great hot springs and geothermal pools to swim in... But - depending on when you travel - it can be really cold and - in winter - also dark. Even in summer, you'll usually need sweaters, jackets, etc. Iceland is also much more expensive... I think you should do a bit more research and see what interests you the most, or let it depend on the season - Iceland in summer and Costa Rica in winter. But if it's your first family trip, I honestly think that the entire family, and especially the kids will enjoy Costa Rica more, even if just for the weather. But after you do that trip, definitely do Iceland next - it's one of a kind!

The world is your oyster once again. For the first summer since 2019, you can travel to most destinations without jumping through a lot of extra hoops. But more choices and rising prices make it harder to commit: For instance, should you road-trip to a beach town, take the kids to the theme park they've been begging you to visit or immerse them in a new culture on their first international adventure? These are tough decisions.

To help narrow down the possibilities, the travel team at the Good Housekeeping Institute the legwork for you. We used research from our annual Family Travel Awards and talked with travel experts to come up with a list of 2023's best summer vacation ideas for traveling with children — young or grown. "Particularly in Europe, this is a year to consider wandering off the beaten path," says O'Shaughnessy.

Several spots on our list would make an awesome vacation with grandparents and other extended family. We also considered a range of price points so you'll have both budget and luxury vacation ideas. From our best family destinations, pick a place you've never been as a family and just book it. It'll feel so good to get away.

Big Island, Hawaiʻi

You can't go wrong with any of the Hawaiian islands, but the Big Island (officially called the island of Hawaiʻi) will enthrall active families with school-age kids and older. Picture large black volcanic rocks alongside calm blue water teeming with tide pools, and you've envisioned the stretch of beach on the Kohala Coast.

It's simply perfect for low-key days spent splashing and snorkeling. Driving from the coast (where most resorts are located) to Hawaiʻi Volcanos National Park will be the coolest road trip ever: You'll pass through many different types of climates — including a rainforest — before reaching the park. Once inside, kids can explore caves, take short hikes on volcanic terrain and feel the warmth from a steaming bluff. Adventure outfitters also offer memorable hikes around other parts of the island, including some that allow your family to swim under a waterfall. Whoa!

Where to Stay: Nestled between lava fields, the white sand beach at the newly renovated Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is one of the most breathtaking (and family-friendly) on the island.

Lucca, Italy

What's to Love: Fairytale vibes, colorful architecture and fewer tourists than Florence Keep in Mind: Rates are lower in June and August than in July.

Surrounded by thick medieval walls, Lucca is mysterious, magnificent and far less crowded than nearby Florence. A 14th-century tower that has a garden on top, Gothic cathedrals, piazzas and cobblestone streets will make your kids feel like they're immersed in a fairytale. Because it's mostly flat (unlike so many towns on Italy's Amalfi Coast), kids won't tire out as quickly. And when they do need to rest their little legs, stop at one of the gelato shops. There's enough to do in Lucca for a weekend, and you can spend the rest of your vacay taking day trips to other places in the region.

Where to Stay: How about a hotel next to an antique carousel? Bordering the Piazza Napoleon, the stunning Grand Universe Lucca is a good value compared to the rates at upscale properties in well-known Italian cities. Plus, the hotel is part of Marriott's Autograph collection, so you can use (and earn) Marriott Bonvoy points.

Traverse City, Michigan

What's to Love: Lake beaches, cherry orchards and wineries Keep in Mind: Even in summer, temperatures can drop into the 50s at night.

If there were a recipe for a perfect beach town, Traverse City supplies all the right ingredients — a variety of stunning public beaches, a fab food scene and a great home base for exploring the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, winner of a 2023 Good Housekeeping Family Travel Award. Come in July or early August, so you can pick sweet cherries at a nearby orchard. The town even hosts the National Cherry Festival from July 1 to 8.

Where to Stay: Opening this June, the Alexandra Inn has a private beach on Lake Michigan and a study filled with family board games.

Hershey, Pennsylvania

What's to Love: Chocolate, theme park and gardens Keep in Mind: Hersheypark is busiest in the afternoon, so hit the hotel pool after lunch and return to the park at night when it's cooler and less crowded.

With the smell of chocolate in the air and street lights shaped like Hershey Kisses, this town in central Pennsylvania lives up to its reputation as one of the sweetest places on Earth. Hersheypark , which dates back to 1906, is the main draw thanks to its fabulous lineup of both coasters and kiddie rides. A new coaster, its 15th, is expected to open this summer.

Next door, at the air-conditioned Hershey's Chocolate World, your crew can pack into a candy-themed vehicle to learn how chocolate bars are made and score a free sample at the end. Be sure to explore downtown, home of the Hershey Theatre (where Broadway touring shows often play) and MeltSpa by Hershey. The nearby Hershey Gardens, with a butterfly atrium and hands-on nature play for kids, is a great spot to relax.

Where to Stay: With indoor and outdoor pools, waterslides, a splash zone, an arcade and an ice cream shop, Hershey Lodge is almost as much of a kid magnet as the park. Everyone in your group scores a full-size Hershey bar at check-in.

What's to Love: Fantastic exchange rate, very walkable and great for a trip with extended family Keep in Mind: Once you enter Quebec, all the street signs are in French so familiarize yourself with the words for stop, exit and so forth.

If a trip to Europe isn't in the budget this summer, Montreal may be the next best thing. "You get the European feel; the neighborhoods are enchanting," says Samantha Brown, a mom of two and host of the TV show Samantha Brown’s Places to Love . The city has the most surprisingly lovely "green alleyways," scenic car-free paths that may take you past kids' lemonade stands and artisans selling their wares, Brown says. Historic buildings, museums, parks and churches plus an array of festivals also add to the European vibe. Plus, kids may pick up a couple of French words or phrases. Magnifique!

Where To Stay: Try Sonder Maisonneuve in the downtown area. You can book a three-bedroom apartment with a kitchen and laundry for about the same price as a single upscale hotel room.

Carlsbad, California

What's to Love: Legoland, beaches and flowers Keep in Mind: The closest and (and most convenient) major airport is John Wayne Airport in Orange County.

Can't decide between a beach vacation and a theme park trip? Carlsbad, north of San Diego, offers the best of both worlds. It's home to Legoland California, an imaginative theme park designed especially for the under-12 crowd. Mini coasters, a driving school and fairytale-like boat rides especially wow the youngest visitors. Lines go by fast because kids can play at Lego tables while they wait. After one or two theme-park days, Carlsbad State Beach gives your family a chance to refresh by the water. Its picnic area, restrooms, lifeguards and a walking path along the coast help turn a good beach day into a great one.

Where to Stay: If you want to go all into the theme-park experience, Legoland California has its own hotel with themed rooms and the most fun elevator ever (no spoilers!). For a more low-key spot, try Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa .

Williamsburg, Virginia

What's to Love: Cool historical attractions, nature activities and mini golf Keep in Mind: It's best to explore the outdoor attractions in the morning when it's cooler.

Steeped in history, this former capital of Virginia is educational and entertaining. Colonial Williamsburg , an outdoor living history museum and winner of a 2023 Good Housekeeping Family Travel Award, immerses kids in 18th-century life. Hands-on activities as well as demonstrations from blacksmiths and other tradespeople dressed in the attire of the times ignite their curiosity. The historic settlements in Jamestown, operated by the National Park Service, are a short drive away. After sneakily educational days, families can unwind at one of the many ice cream shops and mini golf spots.

Where to Stay: Thanks to its multiple pools, playground, golf courses, marina and spa, Kingsmill Resort could be a vacation in itself. Condos with up to three bedrooms can accommodate large families and little kids' sleep schedules.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

EXPLORE NOW What's to Love: Lake activities, concerts and festivals and budget-friendly lodging Keep in Mind: Stay downtown where you can hop on the free street car to major attractions.

With a burgeoning music scene, Milwaukee hosts Summerfest , the world's largest music festival. In 2023, it's taking place over three long weekends — June 22-24, June 29-July 1 and July 6-8. One of the 12 festival stages is in Northwestern Mutual Community Park, which has a colorful playground, family restrooms and sensory rooms. Plan your trip over one of those weekends and spend a few extra days exploring the area's beaches. Located on Lake Michigan, Bradford Beach has received environmental certification from the nonprofit Clean Beaches Coalition.

Where to Stay: In the city's center, the six-floor Courtyard by Marriott Milwaukee Downtown boasts an indoor pool and modern rooms that sleep up to five and include a mini fridge and microwave.

Chicago, Illinois

What's to Love: Fantastic parks, top attractions and iconic food Keep in Mind: Double-check the hours of the attractions you want to visit. The Art Institute of Chicago, for instance, is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

If you usually avoid city vacations with kids, Chicago is the place that's most likely to change your mind. "Many families don't realize that the city has 12 miles of beaches in addition to phenomenal attractions," says Brown. In fact, the city's world-class aquarium, planetarium and natural-history museum are all next to each other on the waterfront. In the Lincoln Park neighborhood, there's a free zoo that's superior to its admission-charging counterparts. Visit on a Wednesday or Saturday when a farmers' market pops up in the area.

Where to Stay: Winner of a 2023 Good Housekeeping Family Travel Award, the Waldorf-Astoria Chicago provides exceptional service plus special amenities for babies and kids.

Cavtat, Croatia

Greece is a hot ticket again this year, according to O'Shaughnessy, with limited availability and high rates. She suggests heading North to Croatia for a similar experience that's more budget-friendly with fewer crowds. One of the country's hidden gems is Cavtat, a town with a stunning waterfront promenade and 5 miles of beaches. It's just 10 minutes from the Dubrovnik airport that offers direct flights from NYC and other cities.

Where to Stay: Located in the charming historic center, the recently renovated Hotel Supetar Cavtat is divine and has a beautiful pool. Like most European hotels, families will need to book two rooms.

Santa Barbara, California

What's to Love: Family-friendly, glorious beaches and good weather Keep in Mind: You can take a ferry to Channel Islands National Park, about 22 miles off the coast. The five-island chain has been called the “Galapagos of North America.”

If any place can deliver a vacation (and not just a trip) for families with young kids, it's Santa Barbara. It's all just so pretty and easygoing. With gentle waves, Leadbetter Beach is a great spot to introduce toddlers to the ocean. Outdoor showers, restrooms and a grassy area for picnics remove some of the hassles of a beach day with littles. Attractions are engaging but not massive: At the zoo, for instance, kids can get up to kangaroos and wallabies in a new exhibit. At the Museum of Natural History's Sea Center, touch tanks and windows at kid height give little ones a close-up look at the sea creatives native to Santa Barbara. The botanic garden has the sweetest adventure space with a fort building, a maze and obstacle courses.

Where to Stay: The recently renovated Kimpton Canary has the largest rooftop pool in the city, providing stunning mountain views. It also offers a variety of suite sizes to accommodate large families or three generations traveling together.

St. Augustine, Florida

What's to Love: Spanish colonial architecture, unspoiled beaches and wildlife Keep in Mind: You'll probably want to rent a car to explore the area's beaches and get to and from the airport.

In the nation's oldest city, a good time will be had by all ages. A pirate-themed museum, lighthouse and an array of interesting historical sites entertain multiple generations. On top of that, the area boasts 42 miles of beaches, including one that has four ecosystems. The food scene is booming too. Our Family Travel Awards tester enjoyed AsadoLife, a newish waterfront restaurant that specializes in grilling.

Where to Stay: Ideal for families with older children, Casa Monica Resort & Spa is "in the perfect location to the downtown area and an easy walk to restaurants and attractions," said our tester. On days you want to play in the ocean, you'll have access to the resort's private club on Ponte Vedra Beach, about a 15-minute drive from the resort. The club also offers kids' activities plus a family pool that starts at just a few inches deep.

Algarve, Portugal

What's to Love: Fabulous beaches, thermal springs and many resorts Keep in Mind: There aren't direct flights from the U.S. You'll need a stopover in London, Dublin or another European city.

European families know how to vacation right — one of the most popular destinations is this sunny region in Southern Portugal. Dramatic cliffs, wildlife-filled lagoons, sea caves and long stretches of sand for building castles dot the coastline. Called the "California of Europe," this region is known for its fantastic food scene and mix of beaches and countryside.

Where to Stay: Situated in a protected nature park, the Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort is "completely family-driven," says O'Shaughnessy. Fun supervised clubs for kids ages 6 months through 17 give parents time to go stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing or just chill at the beach. You can pre-book baby gear, so you don't have to haul your own. Restaurants have a kids' play area and the children's menu includes baby purees.

Chattanooga, Tennessee

What's to Love: Nature activities, unique attractions and good value Keep in Mind: Time your visit to line up with one of the city's fun music or food festivals.

Two hours southeast of Nashville, Chattanooga is an under-the-radar gem. "It's right on the river and surrounded by phenomenal cliffs," says Brown. Adventurous families will be in their element with all the opportunities for hiking, biking and rock climbing. "The city also has one of the best hang-gliding schools in the world," says Brown. You'll also want to add Ruby Falls to your must-do list. You'll descend 260 feet in a glass elevator to see some of the deepest underground cave waterfalls. The kids' minds will be blown.

Where to Stay: Near Ruby Falls, the Hampton Inn Chattanooga West/Lookout Mountain is a budget-friendly pick that has both indoor and outdoor pools. The hotel brand won a 2023 Good Housekeeping Family Travel Award.

Orlando, Florida

What's to Love: Theme parks, shopping, fun restaurants Keep in Mind: Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so keep ponchos with you.

Let's be real for a minute: Summer isn't the best time to go to Orlando . But if that's the only time you can go, do it! All the major theme parks have new attractions this summer. Walt Disney World recently opened its mega-fun TRON Lightcycle / Run coaster at Magic Kingdom. A new Minion-themed attraction and restaurant are expected to debut at Universal Studios Florida this summer. Over at SeaWorld, coaster fans will look forward to the launch of Pipeline: The Surf Coaster this spring.

Where to Stay: If you're planning on sticking mostly to Disney, opt for Disney's Yacht Club Resort , which is connected to the new Skyliner system that will whisk you to Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios. This tiny island off Cape Cod feels like its own little world. The days are slow — in a good way. There's plenty of time to make sandcastles and splash in the ocean then grab ice cream from one of the many charming downtown shops. The island's three lighthouses look like they're straight out of a movie. You'll also enjoy some spectacular seafood — here's your chance to introduce kids to a lobster roll!

North and South America

The famous and historic Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires hosts special programming for kids.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Perfect for : Urban adventurers, including families with younger kids.

For families looking to explore South America, Buenos Aires is a great place to start. Argentines are super kid-friendly which translates to playgrounds and carousels throughout the city and children being welcome everywhere (even late-night fancy dinners.) A favorite cultural activity for families is the Teatro Colón, considered a crown jewel for any performer because of its superior acoustics. The venue offers kids programming ( Colón Para Chicos ) in which they do abbreviated performances of their regular shows on weekend mornings. It’s a fun introduction to opera, ballet and symphonic music.

For visual arts, check out the MALBA , the museum of Latin American art. It’s fully stroller accessible and the contemporary collection is engaging for even the youngest visitors. Check the website for kids workshops, especially during Argentine summer holidays, which are mid-December to mid-February. Buenos Aires is also full of street art. Have some fun hunting for the craziest murals the family can find, or try a walking tour . Take a break with some ice cream—there are parlors every few blocks.

For something more low key, head to the Rosedal, reminiscent of Paris’ Bois de Boulogne. Walking around the artificial lake you might catch an open air circus or musical performance. On the weekends, the city offers free classes ranging from zumba to roller blading. You can also rent bikes or a paddle boat if you’ve got some energy to burn.

Where to stay: A vacation rental in Palermo is your best bet if you want extra space for the kids, and to eat dinner before 9 p.m—most restaurants don’t open for dinner before 9 p.m., so having your own kitchen is a must. Chicago has a lot of outdoor spaces and museums that will keep children active and engaged while also being home to a plethora of great restaurants for the adults (and their up-and-coming foodie kids). Some wonderful museums for all ages include the Field Museum and the Museum of Science + Industry . An architecture river cruise is ideal for when everyone in your crew is tired—you get to see Chicago’s amazing collection of structures while relaxing on the river. Another solid option for older kids is a kayak tour on the river or Lake Michigan. Millennium Park is a great outdoor space with a climbing wall and concerts in the summer. Despite its reputation for gnarly waves, the North Shore also has plenty of alcove beaches with calmer waters and soft sand like Kawela Bay. Older kids who want to give surfing a try will find plenty of surf schools at their disposal—and what better place to learn than in such an iconic surf destination. For a break from the beach, visit Gunstock Ranch for horseback riding or a rewarding tree-planting experience, and Waimea Valley for a hike along cultural and historic sites that ends at a lovely waterfall (that you can take a dip in). Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

Perfect for: Babies and toddlers. British Colombia is a great starter international trip (with no or minimal jetlag from the U.S.).

Vancouver and Whistler make for an ideal getaway for younger travelers for several reasons. To start, western Canada offers the option of international travel with minimal (or even no) jetlag, which makes getting there with sleep challenged babies or toddlers much easier. Secondly, British Columbia is all about gorgeous natural landscapes that provide the perfect backdrop for getting outside—during the summer temperatures hover in the 60s and 70s, making it a great time to visit.

In Vancouver, the combination of the city and the sea is perfect for littles. Families can really lean into the numerous opportunities for boats and ferry rides, like water taxis that criss-cross False Creek and deliver passengers to Granville Island for a buzzing food market and shops, and to Science World , a kid-focused learning center. Stanley Park and its Vancouver Aquarium and totem poles are also must-sees. Vancouver is a very bike-friendly town, which makes for another fun way to see the sights. Head to the Shipyards on Vancouver’s North Shore for endless food trucks, music, art, and entertainment (plus another fun ferry ride).

Summer is the off-season in Whistler, a popular ski destination, so it makes for a much more mellow time to visit with kids. In this beautiful, mountainous region, walking and hiking trips are the way to go. Children will especially love the Train Wreck hike, a forested trek to the site of an abandoned train crash with train cars splattered about the forest floor and a hanging bridge mid-hike. On the road between Whistler and Vancouver, head to wildlife sanctuary Grouse Mountain , where a gondola ride will bring you to natural enclosures housing orphaned bears and owls.

From relaxing escapes with your infant to deep cultural immersions upon college graduation, here are travel ideas for families with children at any stage.

Once a traveler, always a traveler. There are folks who believe a baby doesn't have to change a thing about a couple's lifestyle, and others who subscribe to the exact opposite theory. But all can agree on one thing: Those who loved traveling before expanding their family likely dream of continuing to explore the world, little ones in tow. One of the most exciting parts of having children, after all, is the way they enrich and amplify almost every experience. Then, of course, there's the awe-inspiring discovery that goes along with watching curious youngsters see and try new things, from delicious foods to beautiful cultures.

Knowing which places around the globe are most appropriate for kids as they grow into and out of different phases can be tough to anticipate. And yes, it's more daunting to fly or contend with jet lag at certain ages. It's true, too, that as little ones become big, trips become more expensive. But all the challenges are far outweighed by the collective joy that's possible on a family vacation, especially one tailored to the brood's developmental stage and interests.

Here, with the help of a few travel experts, we break it down by age group, pairing each with a dreamy destination for exposure to the wondrous world and maximum family fun.

Infants (Ages 0-1): A Mexican Beach Resort

You'll hear it from every parent: Travel while your baby is just that — a baby — because it'll never be easier. Once they start walking, all bets are off. True, you're likely sleep deprived, but doesn't that make it the perfect time to hop on a short flight to Mexico for some R&R and vitamin D?

When planning a first vacation with an infant, Indagare CEO and founder Melissa Biggs Bradley says, "You'll want a warm location with a direct flight, a big beach since infants are still too young to enjoy a kids club, and easy access to good medical care in case of an ear infection or anything more serious."

Expect to bring way too much gear, but don't worry — any parent will empathize. A family-friendly resort in a development like the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita (for West Coasters) or Rosewood Mayakoba (for East Coasters) is a great bet since they'll happily provide the comforts of home (think: crib, mini fridge for milk, high chair, baby bathtub, or diaper pail), meaning you can focus your packing around sun protection and adorable tropical ensembles for your baby. They're also likely to offer babysitting services, in case you'd like to have dinner one night after 7 p.m. As for the new parent exhaustion, a soft, sandy beach is an idyllic place to catch up on Zs, for all of you. There's a reason sound machines come with a blue noise option — the gentle lapping of waves could lull anyone right to sleep.

Toddlers (Ages 1-4): The Island of Hawai'i

To a toddler, there's excitement to be found everywhere. They're like mini explorers, captivated by virtually every landscape and situation. Young kids who have just discovered the freedom of walking, running, and swimming will find pure magic in the Hawaiian islands. The coral reefs, beautiful beaches , Polynesian culture, soulful storytelling, near-perfect weather, and wildlife such as dolphins, whales, and sea turtles hold plenty of appeal for adults, yes, but also for toddlers.

The island of Hawai'i, specifically, offers a diversity of stunning environments, from stark and surreal lava flows to lush waterfalls, as well as resorts with little to no crowds. Mauna Lani , part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, with its ancient royal fishponds, outrigger canoes, and calm beach, exemplifies the family-forward approach. Their Holoholo Kids Crew offers thoughtful programming (think: crab hunting, Hawaiian language lessons, petroglyph walks, and natural dyeing, stamping, and feather art). And while it's designed for ages five to 12, three and four year olds can also attend with their parents (a great excuse for grown-ups to experience all the fun, too). Uncle Danny, the resort's cultural gatekeeper whose domain is the vibrant "house of knowledge," is wonderful with children.

"Many Hawaii resorts have protected ponds where you can take your toddlers into the ocean," says Biggs Bradley. "You can enjoy whale-watching cruises, and, in their later toddler years, they'll appreciate learning about the wildlife, maybe attend lei-making classes, or just relaxing by the pool or on the beach."

Elementary School (Ages 5-10): Rome, Italy

Once your kids have reached school age, they begin to hear a little more about the world around them. Basic elementary school lessons typically include ancient Rome, the Colosseum , and gladiators, says Biggs Bradley, so a trip to Rome "will further engage them in the touring, since what they've learned in school will be brought to life."

There are countless exciting activities available for kiddos, and even picky eaters will find something they love in the boot-shaped country known for pizza, pasta, and gelato. "Pizza- and gelato-making experiences are a must," says Access Italy CEO Simone Amorico, who adds that kids love making ceramics and mosaics, too. He says other can't-miss activities include, "treasure hunts in the Vatican and the Villa Borghese, where they can also ride a four-wheel bike and stop for picnics."

Meanwhile, the fairytale-like Hotel Eden is an ideal base for Roman excursions, and it's not far from Teatro Verde, a theater for puppet shows and musicals, the Explora Children's Museum, and Bartolucci, a traditional wooden toy shop where you can find Pinocchio. "At this age, a typical family tour can be boring, as they tune out and can't wait to leave," says Scott Dunn USA president John Spence. "We had our kids attend a Roman gladiator school so they could gain hands-on lessons in fighting techniques and reenact life as an ancient gladiator — they loved it."

Tweens (Ages 11-13): A Montana Dude Ranch

Between the ages of 11 and 13, kids, or tweens, will likely want some autonomy, but they also need boundaries. A dude ranch or guest ranch encompassing hundreds of acres of pristine, wide-open space makes for a wonderful compromise.

"When kids are in their early teenage years, there is nothing better than a vacation that combines adventure with something new," says Spence. "Watching our kids step outside of their element — horseback riding on mountainside cliffs or even just hiking in the beautiful Montana nature — is one of the best parts of being a parent."

Visiting a 10-square-mile property like The Ranch at Rock Creek — with a slew of included activities like fly fishing, cross-country mountain biking, photography classes, sapphire mining, and horse roping lessons — is quite a novelty for many families. Most kids, however unique their interests, will be able to find something they are stoked about. The younger ones can also attend Flint's Forest Rangers Kids Club (ages four to 12), which offers pre-booked excursions such as wildlife spotting and treasure hunting. Families can come together in the property's western-style bar for bowling, table tennis, and karaoke, too.

And perhaps the best part about Montana, home to dozens of guest ranches, is that it's gorgeous and fun year-round. It's a winter wonderland worthy of a snow globe and, at The Ranch at Rock Creek, cold-weather options include skiing (downhill and cross-country), sledding, ice skating, hockey, and snowmobiling. Teenagers (Ages 14-17): An African Safari

"It is all about the thrill of experiencing something so different from what they've ever seen before," says Extraordinary Journeys ' founder and CEO Elizabeth Gordon of taking the kids on an African safari.

Biggs Bradley adds, "Safaris are a huge area of passion for me, and I was eager to open my kids' eyes to them when they were young. The sweet spot to take children on their first safari is after 14 because by then you can ensure they will really remember the experience. They'll be able to sit in a vehicle for long periods of time and likely won't be nervous about sleeping in a tent." Plus, many camps also don't allow kids under 12 years old.

A safari is a special experience for a family to encounter together, witnessing an exciting array of animals in their natural habitat — not to mention beautiful traditions and cultures, too. "An amazing guide will teach [the kids] about tracking, get them to think like a detective, and figure out what may have happened in the area by looking at footprints," says Gordon.

As Biggs Bradley says of Kenya, "Cultural exchange is key. The opportunity for kids to meet and interact with Maasai people, for example, can be an incredibly memorable part." Properties like Sirikoi , Basecamp Explorer 's circuit, and Angama Mara provide beautiful immersion along with amazing sightings of the world's rarest species.

Another perk? Since Wi-Fi is often sparse or unavailable, families can unplug from technology and simply enjoy being together out in the bush. For even more adventure, consider adding on gorilla trekking in Rwanda (the pricier option) or Uganda (more affordable), especially if doing a safari in nearby Kenya.

College (Ages 18-21): Queenstown, New Zealand

Once kids have gone off to college, it can take a pretty enticing offer to pull them back into the fold for family vacations. Queenstown, New Zealand, is one such attractive proposition. Known as the "adventure capital of the world," it's the kind of all-season destination that offers a scene for everyone — plus, English is the main language spoken.

The birthplace of bungee jumping is home to countless thrills, from exhilarating jumps ( AJ Hackett Bungy from the Kawarau Bridge is the classic choice) to parasailing on bright blue Lake Wakatipu. "Families will love helicopter flights over the Tasman Glacier and along Milford Sound on a sunny winter day, or careening around the bends of the Shotover Canyon on a jet boat in the summer," says Gordon of this "quintessential playground."

For anyone who's not quite as much an adrenaline junkie, there are many hiking — known there as tramping — trails that reveal jaw-dropping panoramas. "New Zealand is a dream destination for a family who loves nature, landscapes, and, of course, adventure," says Biggs Bradley, adding that skydiving, rafting, caving, and fly fishing are also draws.

In the winter, Queenstown's mountains are home to epic skiing and snowboarding. The town itself is walkable and safe, with plenty of places to enjoy a sundowner, lovely meal, or the nightlife. With the kids becoming adults (and the local drinking age being 18), there's also the option to take a day for wine tasting at some of the island country's top vineyards in the Central Otago region about 45 minutes away by car.

To allow your young adults some freedom, try a couple rooms at the boutique QT Queenstown , which is full of art, quirk, and large windows showcasing the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu.

College Graduates (Age 22 and Up): Japan

By the time they've graduated college, many young adults will be ready to dive, respectfully, into a culture as exquisite as Japan's. "Japan is a country you want to travel to when you know your family will truly be able to appreciate what it has to offer," says Biggs Bradley, pointing out the opportunity for deep cultural immersion in food and drink, museums, temples, and shrines.

In a place where there's a fine art to everything from making tea and arranging flowers to lighting incense, it's best to ensure all parties are prepared to be well-behaved and gracious guests. A more mature — or adventurous — palate is also helpful for fully enjoying all of Japan's culinary treasures. Spence calls it "the perfect place for post-graduates who want new experiences," and Japan certainly excels at providing those.

Tokyo is a dynamic urban center where exploration yields unimaginable exploits. A different energy pervades Kyoto's quieter neighborhoods of Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, bamboo forests, and famous geisha districts. ( InsideJapan offers wonderful private tours led by local experts.) "Our kids loved trains, making the bullet train around Japan one of the best parts of the trip," says Spence.

Getting around is indeed a no-brainer — trains and buses are always precisely on time, people are friendly and willing to help despite language barriers, and there are many appealing regions (prefectures) with special attributes, such as places known for sake, hot springs (onsen), and art.

Staying in a traditional ryokan is a must, and the fourth-generation Japanese-owned Hoshinoya portfolio includes several luxury options. One of the most memorable additions to the cities, however, is a couple of days near Mount Fuji, where Hoshinoya Fuji offers spectacular views of the elusive volcano alongside exceptional local cuisine and rugged outdoorsy activities, including a food smoking workshop, canoeing, and e-biking. At the end of the day, there's no better place for a globe-trotting family to relax and share stories than around a bonfire under the stars, with live acoustic music, s'mores, and Japanese whisky.

The Best Family Vacation Ideas: Types of Trips For Families

F amily vacations are important for your family, but it can always be a challenge to decide when and where to go. Budget is obviously a major consideration, and as kids get older, time becomes more and more limited. So, you’ll want to make sure that you maximize your time by going to the best place possible. If you are looking for family vacation ideas, this post is a good place to start.

When my family is considering which destinations to travel to, we consider a variety of things. I have a family travel bucket list that I work from and using factors like budget, weather, and time available, we determine where to go. If you are building up your list, you may need some family travel inspiration.

This list of types of trips that every family should take can definitely help. Keep in mind that these don’t need to be big vacations. You can staycation to your nearest city for the day, visit a local theme park as part of a road trip, or head over to your nearest National Park for a quick trip.

Of course, if you prefer to do the same type of vacation each time, that is totally fine too. This is just a list to help you develop family vacation ideas for your bucket list.

Family Cruise

It’s no surprise that I love cruising, because it’s a great way to see multiple destinations, and can be very relaxing. If you haven’t cruised before, consider a short family cruise, like the 3-day Disney Dream trip we took as our first family cruise.

You can also combine a short cruise with another type of trip, such as a theme park vacation or a city vacation. With activities already organized for you, and meals all prearranged, cruising truly does feel like a vacation from responsibilities.

When looking at various cruise itineraries, you’ll have lots of options. Look at the amenities on the ship, as well as the ports of call that you’ll be visiting. While you may associate cruising with warm weather, remember that there are cooler weather Disney cruises, like Alaska, Canada, or Northern Europe.

We’ve loved our cruises on the Disney Cruise Line. I’ve been on all five ships, and while the Disney Fantasy is my favorite, I’ve enjoyed sailing on all of them. 

Family Resorts

There are so many family-friendly resorts offering water parks, outdoor pools, fun activities, beach access, kids’ clubs, and so much more. For some great quality time with your family, you may consider staying at a family-friendly resort where you can spend much of your time. All inclusive resorts are a great option, but there are other great options as well.

One of the best family vacation spots, in my opinion, is Beaches Turks and Caicos . This all inclusive resort in Providenciales Turks and Caicos is the perfect place for a family vacation. It’s a popular destination, so be sure to book your stay well in advance.

Theme Park Family Vacation

Theme park trips are so fun for families, especially for those with younger children. My kids now love rides, but when they were younger, they really liked seeing characters. Seeing the magic of a theme park through a child’s young eyes is a beautiful part of parenting.

There are loads of theme parks in the United States, from huge parks like Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Studios to smaller regional theme parks like Story Land in New Hampshire. You can definitely find one that will fit into your budget and family plans. Amusement parks are also a great option.

If you have older kids, you may find that they also love theme parks. Instead of being interested in characters, however, they may prefer the thrill rides. My kids absolutely love the thrill rides at Busch Gardens , for instance.

You don’t have to plan an entire theme park vacation, however. There are lots of family vacation destinations where you can just incorporate a day or two at a theme park or amusement park, and then spend the rest of the time doing something else.

City Vacation Ideas

Cities are filled with delicious restaurants, beautiful parks, historic sites, outdoor activities, and world-class museums, making them great places to visit with kids. We like to visit New York City at least once every few years, and the kids love seeing shows and exploring everything there is to see. There are also so many fun restaurants in New York City for the whole family to enjoy and even if it rains, there’s so much to do .

Our proximity to NYC makes that pretty easy, but New York isn’t the only big city worth visiting with kids. Before planning your big city trip, make sure that the kids are the right age for everything that you want to do since some museums aren’t the most kid-friendly.

Other domestic cities and popular destinations you may want to consider include the following:

National Park

We haven’t traveled to a National Park yet with our kids, but it’s definitely on our list. National Parks offer so much, from relaxing atmospheres to nature education. If you can’t make it to a National Park, state parks are another great option.

Families that enjoy camping may especially consider visiting a National Park, including Yellowstone National Park, Sequoia , Grand Canyon National Park, Zion , and Glacier National Park. You could even do a Yosemite day trip rather than stay there. Pinnacles National Park is another option.

Family Vacation Road Trip

Most of us have some great memories of road-tripping with our families. While road trips aren’t always easy, they are such a great way to take a reasonably-priced family vacation. They also help promote family bonding.

Road trips can be a great way to take a more flexible vacation because you won’t need to worry about purchasing flights for a specific time. While you may want to book your hotels, those often have a more flexible cancellation period.

Ski Vacation

I’m not a fan of the cold, but I’ve loved our family ski vacations. They are a great way to enjoy an outdoor activity as a family.

Family ski resorts offer many different family-friendly activities, but you can also consider a day trip to the mountain. If your kids (or you) haven’t skied before, definitely consider ski school or private lessons. My kids have loved their time in ski school and didn’t want to leave.

Like theme park vacations, you may also incorporate skiing into a longer family vacation. You won’t necessarily need to ski every day. See this ski packing list if you are planning a trip.

Beach Vacation

I love the beach, and so our family has experienced many beach vacations . You can also combine your beach vacation with a Caribbean cruise. I prefer visiting a beach resort, which makes things convenient because you can go back to the room whenever you need to.

As much as I love beautiful beaches, I do like to visit a place that has other family attractions in addition to just a nice beach. Even something as simple as mini-golf courses, boat tours, or botanical gardens can be a nice break from spending the whole family trip on the beach.

Guided Tour Family Vacation

Another relaxing vacation idea is a guided, group tour. We’ve been on several Adventures by Disney family vacations, and have loved every one. I enjoyed the relaxing vacation with absolutely no planning responsibilities, while my kids had a great time meeting other kids.

Adventure Vacations

When your kids are older, you may consider going on a family adventure vacation . Things like zip lining, horseback riding, and whitewater rafting can easily be incorporated into your regular vacation, or you can choose to take an adventure-filled vacation.

Water Parks

My kids love visiting water parks. Because we live in New England, we don’t have as many opportunities to visit outdoor water parks as we’d like. Luckily, there are some indoor water parks in the area – and we have lots of great places to visit that have water parks.

One of our favorite things to do is to visit a family resort with a water park on the property. These can include water slides, wave pools, raft rides, lazy rivers, and so much more. Of course, this type of vacation can be combined with any other type of trip, since you won’t want to spend a whole week just at the water park.
