Travel Inn, 6161 E Benson Hwy, Tuscon AZ We stayed during Tucson AZ Gem and Mineral Show 2024 (January 31- February 7). Driving up to the property was scary. Surrounding area was ugly with homeless living in the lot next door. The advertised pool had been cemented in, but the fence was there. Our room was supposed to be nonsmoking, but tobacco and other smells were strong! Our keys would not work to the room on numerous occasions. The refrigerator was not level so food and drinks fell out when opened. The microwave was not level either. The wall plug in-between the two queen beds was hanging out of the wall. The reservation was for seven nights (did not get a weekly rate) and we wanted to leave a day early so we requested cancellation of one night 72 hours in advance, but the owner would not refund. If you book through an agency (as we did), make sure you check the policy for cancellations as this fell on the owner's policy and decision. He was rude and would not listen at all. Also, a language barrier existed.

A five-star cheap motel! Everything, with tax, was $82 and change, no deposit required! The place is clean and modern. Everything worked as it was supposed to and there were no roaches, etc. As a cheap motel you must do your own due diligence about bedbugs (assume all of these places have them and take steps to protect your belongings). Plus the location is extremely hard to beat. It's literally right off I-10 to put you at easy access to literally everything in any direction of Tucson. Do be aware that if you come here during gem show season (roughly mid-January to mid-February), you are unlikely to find any vacancy.

Hotel room was a dump and was filthy. My friend and I both got violently ill by morning with norovirus. Nothing had been cleaned. Freezer was caked with yellow ice and rotted moldy food. Bathtub and shower curtain were unbelievably filthy. Floors had gunk on them. Microwave and sink not cleaned. Owner was rude and uncooperative with releasing us from a second night. Corporate office would not back us up.

Room is not sanitary. There is mold in the freezer. The microwave is not clean. The tub and shower curtain are not clean. The place is filthy and unacceptable. There is a layer of filth under the beds. We were not provided with enough pillows. It's unhealthy.

For the price, this is the best motel in Tucson. They clean the rooms after each guest leaves. The bedding is clean and fresh smelling. The tv's work, the wifi works, and the doors lock and stay secured well. Also, a copy of the Bhagava Gita as it is next to the bible. 10/10 This is the place. There are no bedbugs here.

This place is clean, provides value for your dollar. If you're looking for a no frills place to stay go here. Close to fairgrounds for a quick Uber ride.

Spent one night there. Woke up with bites on my arms and legs. Bedbugs, no matter how cheap the room was it wasn't worth it!

Overall this place is ok. The room is moderately clean, could be better could be worse. They have mini fridge and microwave in the room, as well as a nice tv with cable and ESPN. Shower was hot, service was good. There's nicer places around, but this place is good to lay your head and get a hot shower.

I've stayed here lots now all of a sudden they jacked the price over 100$ a night from 35 really? There WiFi but it don't work the wonderful management (and by wonderful I mean awful) tell me they have no control over it! I really wish I had stayed somewhere else will not come back and hope no one else dose and they have to sell it maybe someone can run it better

Whether you are a new resident or visiting Southern Arizona on a family vacation, I am sure this list will help you give you unique experience ideas that introduce you top Tucson attractions, eccentric things not to miss that help you explore our beautiful city.

Don’t Miss Events

Don’t miss the Van Gogh Immersive Experience @ Oro Valley Marketplace. This traveling show has been extended through February 2024. Prices vary by day and time but start at $25 for adults and $15 for kids 4-12. Walk into Van Gogh’s world, to experience his masterpiece Starry Night that he painted more than 100 years ago in June 1889. This is a hands-on immersive experience (available in English and Spanish) that all ages will enjoy!

1. The Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium offers a room full of interactive exhibits that kids love, plus a theater with a variety of shows including one geared towards kids, Perfect Little Planet .

2. Let your kids make their own miniature project during the Kids Create program at The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures every 2nd Saturday. It’s included in the price of admission and geared towards grade school kids.

3. Explore over 350 aircraft indoors and outdoors at the Pima Air and Space Museum . There is an outdoor playground perfect for little ones that need a break from exploring the grounds.

4. The  International Wildlife Museum is a perfect destination for families to avoid the summer heat. Check out over 400 animals and insects in diorama habitats all indoors with air conditioning! This is more natural history museum vs zoo.

5. Get peek at the Cold War era and check out a real missile at the Titan Missile Museum.

6. The Children’s Museum Tucson main location downtown is perfect for kids up to age 12.

7. Learn about the people and history of the Southwest at the Arizona State Museum.

8. Check out rodeo parade wagons and Tucson first garbage truck among other historical vehicles at the Tucson Rodeo Parade Museum.

9. Head to the Tucson Museum of Art on the second Sunday of the month for Second SundAZe for free admission and educational activities.

Explore Southwest artwork and architecture at Degrazia Gallery in the Sun, founded by of local Arizona artist Ted DeGrazia.

11. Reid Park Zoo is the perfect size zoo for an afternoon or morning of fun. Bring a little extra money to feed the giraffes or ride the carousel.

12. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is the quintessential Tucson attraction for locals and visitors alike. There’s a reason why it often ranks one of the top zoos or museums nationwide. The Arizona Sonora Desert Museum is a great place for a variety of people because its part natural history museum and part zoo.

13. Kids will like visiting the Children’s Discovery Garden or watching the Thomas Garden Railway train pass around the gardens at Tucson Botanical Gardens.

14. Take a step back in time and get a glimpse of life in Tucson 150 years ago at Old Tucson Studios .

15. Grab some authentic Indian Fry Bread from a stall out front before you head inside to check out the Mission San Xavier del Bac, a historic Spanish Catholic mission.

16. Take the tram ride at Sabino Canyon Recreation Area with 9 stops, there are plenty of options for families to hike a little or hike a lot. Stop by the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center for unique Tucson souvenirs.

22. There are plenty of horseback riding options around town, experience the beautiful desert landscape in a unique way. A great place to start is a local dude ranch like White Stallion Ranch or Tanque Verde Ranch.

Depending upon their previous experience this might be something to avoid if you have young children. Some places do offer pony rides too though.

23. It’s 70 degrees year-round at Colossal Cave making it a fun adventure no matter what the weather outside is like.

24. Visit the ducks and smell the roses at Reid Park. Reid park features several playgrounds, a rose garden, pathways, a public pool, a lake and of course the zoo.

25. Bike the Loop. Or walk it.  The Loop features 120 miles of shared-use pathways that connect local parks and trailheads throughout the Pima County area.

26. Trail Dust Town features stunt shows, rides, dining and the Museum of the Horse Soldier. It’s an easy way to get a hint of the Wild West without driving to Tombstone.

27. Support an urban farm for kids by visiting Tucson Farm Village during U-pick hours.

27. Bike, walk, or skate, everyone is welcome at Cyclovia Tucson to experience Tucson streets safely with their friends and family with community-focused booths and family-friendly activities. Cyclovia happens twice a year, typically in April and October.

28. Head downtown on the 2nd Saturday of every month to enjoy street vendors and performances at 2nd Saturdays Downtown Tucson.

29. You’ll find artists, food, and performers at the Fourth Avenue Street Fair. It occurs twice a year, once in the winter and once in the spring.

30. The La Fiesta de Los Vaqueros Tucson Rodeo and Parade occurs at the end of February. The parade is the largest non-motorized parade in the country and is almost 100 years old.

31. The University of Arizona hosts the Tucson Festival of Books, a free literacy-focused festival held in the spring. Kids will get a kick out of the storybook character parade.

32. Kids get free admission to the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show and free mineral samples from the Jr. Education area.

33. UA Spring Fling is the largest student-run carnival in the country and offers the typical rides, games, and food you’d expect from a carnival.

Forbes Travel Guide, which describes itself as "the global authority on luxury hospitality," awarded five-star ratings to 544 nationwide properties, including 340 hotels. The survey also honors outstanding restaurants, spas and ocean cruise ships.

"What discerning travelers consider luxury can vary, and opinions about hotels are readily available online," said Amanda Frasier, president of ratings for Forbes Travel Guide, in an interview with The Arizona Republic. That's why she finds it important to offer a fair and unbiased survey that evaluates properties based on guest experiences and the value of what consumers pay for.

How many Arizona hotels did Forbes recognize?

Forbes recognized 12 Arizona hotels in its 2024 ranking: seven in metro Phoenix, three in Tucson and two in Sedona.

Five hotels received four stars and the remaining six were recognized as Recommended Hotels.

However, only one Arizona hotel received five stars: the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain in Marana, near Tucson. Forbes has recognized the hotel as a five-star property since 2015.

Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North has been recognized as one of Forbes' four-star properties since 2002, the longest of any Arizona hotel on the list. The Phoenician has appeared on the list each year since 1992, but with different ratings; it's been classified as a four-star property since 2003.

All 12 hotels were also recognized on last year's Forbes list , though two were downgraded. The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician in Phoenix is now four stars, and Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort in Tucson is now a Recommended Hotel.

But a lower rating doesn't necessarily reflect diminishing quality, since all the properties on Forbes' list are being singled out for outstanding luxury experiences, Frasier said. What sets a five-star hotel apart from a four-star or Recommended Hotel is the consistency of the service.

How does Forbes rate hotels?

Forbes says it classifies luxury hotels into three categories:

• Five star recognizes outstanding properties with "virtually flawless service and amazing facilities."
• Four star means a property of exceptional quality and high levels of service.
• Recommended properties are identified for "consistently good service and facilities."

Forbes' website says "highly trained inspectors" visit every hotel and resort they recognize, staying at least two nights and assessing the hotel based on more than 900 standards. The anonymous inspectors pay their own way.
