The BMW Comfort Package is a collection of features and amenities that aim to make the driving experience more comfortable while also providing additional safety features.

The package includes items like a surround View with 3D View, electric front seats, heated seats, rear-view camera display, and parking assistance. These options are designed to make the ride smoother and safer for drivers.

In addition to these comfort improvements, the package also offers additional safety benefits such as improved braking technology and advanced driver assist systems. With these upgrades in place, drivers can enjoy greater control over their vehicles while on the road.

What is included in the BMWs Comfort Package?

The BMW Comfort Package offers a range of features designed to make driving your vehicle more comfortable and enjoyable. The package includes:

  • Folding anti-dazzle mirrors
  • Electric front seats
  • Comfort Seats
  • Comfort Access
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Parking Assistance Package

Cost of BMW Comfort Package

The estimated price range for the BMW Comfort Package varies depending on which model is chosen and what options are included.

Generally, pricing can start at around $ 1, 000 and go up to over $ 4, 000 – making it one of the more expensive packages offered by BMW. However, despite its high cost of entry, there are still many benefits associated with this package that make it worth considering.

As mentioned earlier, each individual comfort package will vary depending on the model chosen but they generally include enhanced seating comfort, improved audio systems, electric front seats, Parking Assistance Package, and much more.

Pros and Cons of Comfort Package

The BMW Comfort Package is a package of luxury and convenience features offered on some BMW vehicles . Here are some of the pros and cons of the BMW Comfort Package.

Cons of Comfort Package

The BMW Comfort Package may offer a range of features that provide additional comfort and safety benefits, but it also comes with a hefty price tag.

These packages are typically more expensive than the standard features found in a vehicle, making them an impractical option for those who have limited budgets.

Additionally, the selection available for these packages is often quite limited as there are only so many options to choose from when purchasing one. This lack of selection can lead to buyers feeling disappointed if they cannot find what they were hoping for in their package.

In addition to being expensive, some drivers may be concerned about how these upgrades will affect the performance of their car over time.

While improved braking systems and driver assist technology can help reduce risks on the roadways by alerting drivers to potential dangers, too much reliance on such technology could result in decreased reaction times due to drivers becoming overly reliant on it instead of honing their own driving skills.

Furthermore, if not properly maintained or serviced regularly, such convenience technologies could break down over time causing further issues with your vehicle’s overall performance level.

Pros of Comfort Package

The BMW Comfort Package o ffers superior comfort features that are designed to make the driving experience more enjoyable and comfortable for drivers.

The adjustable lumbar support and heated seats all work together to create an interior environment that is tailored specifically to each driver’s needs. This allows drivers to customize their seating position while also keeping them warm during colder climates or times of the year.

In addition, this package also provides safety features that help keep drivers safe on the roads.

The advanced driver assistance systems included in this package such as lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring can alert drivers when they are veering out of their lane or if there is another object in their blind spot which can help reduce potential collisions due to poor maneuvering skills.

Furthermore, improved braking technology helps vehicles stop quicker than ever before so that drivers have greater control over their car’s movement even in emergency situations where sudden stops are necessary.

Overall, the BMW Comfort Package is a great option for those who are looking to enhance their driving experience with added comfort and safety features.

Ultimately, whether or not the BMW Comfort Package is worth the investment depends heavily on what type of benefits you are looking for from your car’s upgraded features as well as how much you can afford to spend on such upgrades overall.

The BMW X1 is a spacious family car , offering lots of practical touches to help make journeys easier and more comfortable. Standard equipment for the entry-level Sport trim includes a power tailgate, dual-zone climate control, cruise control with a braking function and BMW’s Parking Assistant system which includes a reversing camera.

If you fancy dipping into the options list, you can specify the Comfort Pack (around £1,100) which includes a heated steering wheel, electrically-adjustable front seats with a memory function, along with lumbar support for the driver’s seat.

For around £2,900, the Technology Plus Pack adds a little extra practicality with equipment such as adaptive LED headlights, power-folding wing mirrors, BMW’s Comfort Access system (which provides keyless entry to the vehicle and allows you to open the tailgate with a sweeping movement of your foot under the rear bumper) and a head-up display.

BMW has increased the size of the X1; it’s now 4,500mm long which is an increase of 53mm, while it’s 24mm wider and 44mm taller, which is why it benefits from so much extra interior space. This doesn’t mean the X1 feels unwieldy on the road, though – it’s only just longer than an Audi Q3 and not much bigger than an average family hatchback .

BMW X1 xDrive23i M Sport - rear seats

Leg room, head room & passenger space

An increase in overall size means that BMW has been able to free up extra room in the X1’s cabin – making it more spacious than a Mercedes GLA or Audi Q3 .

Rear passengers benefit the most with good head and knee room, while the reclining seat backs make things even more comfortable. If you want the flexibility of being able to slide the rear seats back and forth, then you’ll need to stump up a further £300.

The X1 has a 540-litre boot, which is 45 litres more than you’ll find in a Mercedes GLA . There’s also a handy under-floor area in the X1 where you can store soft bags or oddments. All models feature a 40:20:40 split rear seat configuration and, if you fold all the seats forward, you’ll have a huge 1,545-litre cargo capacity.

If you want your petrol-powered X1 to carry out regular  towing duties then you’ll probably want the 215bhp xDrive23i model, because it’s rated to tow up to 2,000kg. The 168bhp sDrive20i version has a 1,800kg maximum.

It’s the same pattern if you opt for a diesel variant, with the xDrive23d oil burner able to pull up to 2,000kg and the sDrive18d 200kg less. The plug-in hybrid models can tow 1,700kg (xDrive25e) and 1,800kg (xDrive30e).

1-Run-flat tires do not come equipped with a spare wheel and tire. Driving over rough or damaged road surfaces, as well as debris, curbs and other obstacles, can cause serious damage to wheels, tires and suspension parts. This is more likely to occur with low-profile tires, which provide less cushioning between the wheel and the road. Be careful to avoid road hazards and reduce your speed, especially if your vehicle is equipped with low-profile tires.

2-Cruise control is not a substitute for the driver's own responsibility in adjusting speed and otherwise controlling the vehicle. After evaluating the road, traffic and visibility conditions, the driver must decide whether and how the system is to be used.

3-Active Driving Assistant is not a substitute for the driver's own responsibility in maintaining safe control of the vehicle. Lane Departure Warning requires clearly definable lane markings that are not obscured by rain, snow, etc.

BMW Comfort Package: Features and Benefits

travel pack bmw x1

If you’re looking to buy a new BMW, you’ll likely come across the option to add the Comfort Package. This package bundles several premium interior features into one convenient upgrade. But is the BMW Comfort Package really worth the additional cost?

In this comprehensive review, we’ll examine everything you need to know about the BMW Comfort Package. You’ll learn exactly what amenities are included, how much it costs for different models, the key pros and cons, and whether it’s a good value for your needs.

By the end, you’ll know if the Comfort Package is worth it or if you’re better off selecting individual options a la carte. Let’s get started!

What Does the BMW Comfort Package Include?

The BMW Comfort Package includes several upgrades focused on improving daily driving comfort and convenience. The main amenities offered are:

  • Power front seats with driver memory and lumbar support  – The driver’s seat has adjustable side bolsters and lumbar support for customized back support. Memory function saves preferred adjustments for two drivers.
  • Heated front seats  – Quickly warm up the front seats with three temperature settings. Ideal for cold weather climates.
  • Auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors  – Interior rearview and side mirror dims automatically to reduce glare from rear headlights at night.
  • Ambient interior lighting  – LED lighting in footwells, door handles, and other areas sets a relaxing mood. Choose from six color options.
  • Storage package  – Adds compartments and nets for extra interior storage space.

These features aim to make time spent driving more comfortable and convenient. You gain customizable seat adjustments, warmth in winter, reduced glare while driving at night, and more interior storage space.

Other perks sometimes included depending on the BMW model and package are a power moonroof, satellite radio, and wireless phone charging. But the core amenities focused on comfort remain the same.

How Much Does the BMW Comfort Package Cost?

The BMW Comfort Package ranges in price from $1,000-$1,700 depending on the BMW model you choose. For example:

  • BMW 3 Series  – $1,050
  • BMW 5 Series  – $1,700
  • BMW X3  – $1,400
  • BMW X5  – $1,600

This package is an add-on that you select when building and pricing a new BMW vehicle. It increases the total MSRP and monthly payment amount.

You’ll typically pay more for the Comfort Package on larger, higher-end BMW models compared to smaller compact sedans and SUVs. The package price accounts for around 2-4% of the total MSRP for a moderately equipped BMW.

One downside is that adding the package reduces your ability to negotiate on the car price. BMW dealerships have less wiggle room to come down on a vehicle with this popular package pre-selected.

But you may be able to save some money by unbundling and ordering options a la carte instead, which we’ll discuss more below.

The Key Benefits of Choosing the Comfort Package

The BMW Comfort Package brings several benefits that improve daily driving:

Lumbar Support and Seat Adjustments Reduce Back Pain

The power driver’s seat with side bolster and lumbar adjustments allows you to customize the seat to perfectly fit your body. This alleviates back pain and discomfort on long drives.

The lumbar support specifically targets the lower back area by adjusting the seat curvature. Having improper lumbar support is a common cause of car-related back pain, so these adjustable seats help.

Heated Seats Warm Up Fast in Winter

The heated front seats in the Comfort Package warm up quickly, within 30 seconds of turning them on. There are three temperature settings to choose from.

No longer do you have to bear the pain of sitting on cold leather or getting into a freezing car on winter mornings! The toasty warm seats make winter driving much more pleasant.

Auto-Dimming Mirrors Reduce Nighttime Glare

The auto-dimming interior rearview mirror and side exterior mirrors dim automatically to reduce glare from other car’s headlights behind you.

This makes driving at night much easier on the eyes by blocking bright lights that would normally be reflected into your eyes. The dimming happens smoothly and responds quickly when it senses glare.

Ambient Lighting Sets a Relaxing Mood

The ambient LED lighting included with the package sets a pleasant, relaxing ambiance in the car’s cabin.

You can choose from six different colors for the footwell, door handle, and cup holder lighting based on your mood or preference. This creates a more luxurious, spa-like environment compared to harsh conventional overhead lighting.

Overall, the Comfort Package aims to transform your BMW’s interior into a more comfortable sanctuary and improve the driving experience. For buyers prioritizing amenities like lumbar support and heated seats, the package is likely worthwhile.

The Potential Drawbacks to Consider

However, there are a few potential drawbacks to the BMW Comfort Package to consider:

It’s expensive for just a few upgrades – Costing $1,000-$1,700, the package bundles into one upcharge amenities that may not all be useful to you. This is a premium to pay on top of an already expensive luxury vehicle.

You may not use the features year-round – For buyers in warmer climates who won’t need heated seats often, you essentially pay for something you only use a few months a year. The value is lower if you don’t take advantage of all the components.

It reduces the ability to customize – Ordering the full package upfront prevents you from customizing and choosing only the specific options you want. You have to take everything bundled even if you only want a couple upgrades.

Potential reliability issues down the road – More complex electronic features like auto-dimming mirrors, ambient lighting, and power seats mean more things that could malfunction out of warranty. Simple is sometimes more reliable long-term.

Resale value may not increase – Packages don’t typically return money on trade-ins or increase resale value. Ordering only the most desirable options a la carte might make more financial sense.

For these reasons, the Comfort Package offers great benefits for some luxury car buyers, while providing less value to others. It depends on your climate, driving needs, budget, and preferences.

Is the Comfort Package Worth the Cost?

Whether or not the BMW Comfort Package is worth the $1,000-$1,700 price depends on a few factors:

Cold winter climates – The Comfort Package is most worthwhile if you live in a colder region where you’ll use the heated front seats during fall, winter, and early spring. Quickly warming up on cold days makes the package a smart choice for cold weather states.

Warmer climates – For buyers in hot southern states who won’t need heated seats often, passing on the package makes more sense. You’ll enjoy the other amenities like lumbar support, but not enough to justify the cost.

Frequent long drives – If you take a lot of road trips or have a long commute, the lumbar support and seat adjustments are especially valuable to reduce back fatigue and pain over extended periods of driving.

Must-have features – The package offers good value if you’ll utilize and benefit from most of the bundled features. For example, if you suffer from chronic back pain, the lumbar support alone may warrant the price.

Only want one or two features – If you only really want heated seats or the auto-dimming mirrors for instance, order them as stand-alone options to save money and customize. The package makes less sense.

At the end of the day, take a close look at your specific needs and which of the Comfort Package upgrades you’ll actually use on a regular basis. For buyers wanting most included amenities, it offers solid overall value. But you can likely save money by skipping the bundle and ordering just the must-have options a la carte.

Alternatives to the Comfort Package

Rather than paying for the full Comfort Package, here are some alternative options to consider:

Order Features Individually A La Carte

One of the best ways to save money but still get the amenities you want is to order them individually. For example, add just the heated front seats and power driver’s seat with lumbar support. This allows you to skip features like the ambient lighting you may not care about.

Check pricing to compare getting your must-have options alone versus bundled in the package. Just be aware that ordering multiple options a la carte can add up quickly too.

Add Heated Seats and Lumbar Support Only

A good middle ground is to get the heated front seats and power driver’s seat with lumbar support as standalone options.

This combination provides warmth in winter plus customizable back support for long drives, which are typically the most desirable Comfort Package features. Leave out the dimming mirrors and ambient lighting to save money if you don’t need them.

Consider Third-Party Accessories

You can also install third-party seat cushions and covers to get some of the benefits at a lower cost. For example, aftermarket lumbar support cushions can provide extra back support.

Sheepskin or heated seat covers warm you up in winter without paying for built-in heated seats. Just make sure to get high-quality accessories that integrate seamlessly into your BMW’s interior.

Prioritizing the one or two comfort upgrades that matter most to your needs, while skipping the rest, can help maximize value. The Comfort Package bundles nice-to-have features that may be overkill for some buyers.

Is the BMW Comfort Package Worth It? Our Verdict

Overall, the BMW Comfort Package offers several upgrades that improve daily driving comfort and convenience. For buyers wanting most or all amenities included in the bundle, it provides solid overall value.

However, make sure to assess your specific climate and needs. In warmer regions or if you only want one or two features like lumbar or heated seats, ordering options a la carte is likely the better value.

Carefully weigh the benefits versus drawbacks and consider the alternatives before deciding. The package brings premium comfort but also comes with a premium price tag. Make sure it includes upgrades and features you’ll truly benefit from and use regularly before purchasing.

Hopefully this detailed review of the BMW Comfort Package helps you determine if it’s worth the investment for your needs. Let us know if you have any other questions!

2023 BMW X1 First Drive Review: The Fun Is Back

The X1 may finally be the entry-level BMW we've been hoping for.

Entry-level luxury is a bit of an oxymoron. How can a vehicle be considered "luxury" if it's also marketed toward a mainstream audience? The all-new 2023 BMW X1 sets out to prove that a low starting price can coincide with a premium experience. BMW introduced its smallest crossover back in 2009 with a rear-drive platform that was fun to drive but didn't offer the upscale feel the brand is known for. The second generation arrived in 2015 with a front-drive platform, increasing practicality at the expense of driving enjoyment.

After the disappointing sequel, this third-generation model bears some big responsibility: prove once and for all that BMW can build an entry-level car that can be at the top of its class. With aging competitors in the Audi Q3 , Cadillac XT4, Lexus UX, and Volvo XC40 plus expensive alternatives like the Jaguar E-Pace, Range Rover Evoque, and Mercedes-Benz GLA, the subcompact luxury segment might be ripe for BMW's taking.

The X1 brings more power, better practicality, updated styling, improved technology, and a competitive starting price. CarBuzz sampled the 2023 X1 in Palm Springs, California, and based on our first impressions, this could be the best example yet.

Styling: Upright Handsome

The X1's proportions have changed drastically since the model was introduced over a decade ago. Compared to the previous generation, this new model is 1.7 inches longer (177.2 inches long), 0.9 inches wider (72.6 inches), and 1.7 inches taller (64.6 inches). The additional height is the most noticeable metric, giving the X1 an MPV-like side profile. Of all BMW's latest designs, the X1 seems the least controversial.

Buyers can select from the standard, xLine, and M Sport exterior packages, each of which brings a slightly different flavor. We are very impressed by the X1's color palette of 13 hues, including new ones such as Blue Bay Lagoon, Cape York Green, Utah Orange, Space Silver, and BMW Individual Frozen Pure Grey. Portimao Blue Metallic is pictured above, and it pairs well with the M Sport package. Sadly, all of the colors are optional besides Alpine White and Jet Black. Wheel sizes include 18, 19, and 20 inches.

Performance: Hotter Starting Point

Luxury crossover shoppers likely aren't expecting a hot pocket rocket, but BMW still significantly increased the X1's output. The 2.0-liter TwinPower four-cylinder turbocharged engine now develops 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque (up from 228 hp and 258 lb-ft) in the base xDrive28i trim. Only the Evoque and E-Pace have more standard power in the class. That power is now routed to a standard xDrive all-wheel-drive system through a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that replaces the torque converter automatic. 0-60 mph takes a respectable 6.2 seconds, and fuel economy is rated at 25/34/28 mpg city/highway/combined, which is better than anything in the class besides the hybrid Lexus UX.

Europe receives hybrid and diesel engines as well as an electric iX1 model. Sadly, those won't be coming to the US, but BMW is working on a hotter M35i model with over 300 hp .

Interior: Well-Designed Space

Despite being the least expensive crossover in the BMW range, the X1 includes a spacious and luxurious cabin. The increased dimensions pay dividends inside, where the X1's gargantuan headroom could accommodate Abraham Lincoln's hat. Customers can opt for Sensatec seats finished in Black, Oyster, Black/Red, and Mocha or a Black Alcantara interior with contrasting blue stitching. Trim options include high gloss black, aluminum mesh effect, aluminum hexacube, or a $200 eucalyptus open-pore fine wood. The aluminum mesh effect feels premium and pairs well with the interesting geometric shapes hidden around the cabin.

In terms of technology, the X1 packs BMW's latest iDrive 8 software, which relies entirely on a 10.7-inch touchscreen since the iDrive rotating controller is now gone. Unfortunately, customers will have to pay extra for niceties such as comfort keyless access, wireless charging, surround-view cameras, parking sensors, heated seats, and adaptive cruise control.

The X1 offers 25.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 57.2 cubic feet with the second row dropped. Only the three-row Mercedes GLB packs more space in the segment. If we had one complaint about the X1's storage, it's that lowering the second row requires pulling three hard-to-reach tabs located in the seat bottoms, which is difficult to do with one hand. There is no way to drop the seats from the trunk. Speaking of the rear seats, legroom is rated at 37 inches, which is generous but falls short of the Mercedes GLA and GLB.

Driving Impressions: Hatch-Like

The previous-generation X1 and closely-related X2 left us wanting more in terms of driving experience. Switching to a FWD platform killed the excitement that was present in the first X1. We are happy to report that the magic is back with this new model. The additional power is noticeable, with peak torque arriving from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. Shifts from the dual-clutch feel more immediate and help the driver be more connected with the car. A Sport Boost function can be accessed by holding the left paddle, delivering the lowest possible gear for maximum acceleration.

BMW didn't just improve the straight-line acceleration; everything about the X1 driving experience is refined. The steering is sharper than the previous generation, and the ride is smoother (especially with the optional adaptive suspension) thanks to the increased length. The whole car feels more playful and no longer punishes occupants with a firm ride. If this is what BMW could do with the base xDrive28i variant, we can't wait to drive the M35i.

Pricing: Entry Luxury (Options Required)

The 2023 X1 xDrive28i starts at $38,600 (plus $995 destination), making it the cheapest crossover in the BMW lineup. That's a significant price increase compared to the last X1 - which started at $35,400 - but factoring in the standard xDrive, it's only a $1,200 difference. Of course, BMW enjoys nickel and diming its entry-level customers for features that come standard on a basic Toyota, so the average X1 buyer will spend significantly more.

Our Portimao Blue test car included several pricey packages, including the M Sport Package ($2,300), Premium Package ($4,200), and 20-inch wheels ($1,200), plus a few a la carte options pushing the total cost as-tested to $49,095. That's not the steepest pricing in this segment, but it's far from the lowest.

Verdict: Worthy Of Its Badge

We were bitterly disappointed by the outgoing BMW X1 and would have had a tough time recommending it over a cheaper (and larger) mainstream crossover with more available features. Though we still aren't fully convinced by the sub-compact luxury crossover segment as a whole, the 2023 X1 is an improvement in every measurable metric, and it's now one of the best options in its class.

Though it wasn't designed to be the Ultimate Driving Machine, the X1 delivers a hatchback-like playfulness that feels ripe for the M treatment. It's more spacious inside and boasts class-leading technology. Like other models in its segment, the X1 suffers from expensive options that are available for a fraction of the price in a mainstream crossover, but that issue is not specific to BMW, so we can't fault the company too much. If we had to recommend an entry-level subcompact crossover, the X1 would now be right at the top.

The recently unveiled 2022 BMW X1 is getting ready for its market introduction. Local BMW branches are currently hosting launch events where customers, media and VIPs have a chance to explore the new X1 and iX1 . The latest event hails from Greece where BMW introduced to the crowd a Frozen Pure Grey X1 featuring the M Sport Package. In conjunction with the matte finish in Frozen Pure Grey, this U11 BMW X1 comes with the M high-gloss Extended Shadow line which adds some black accents to the exterior paint.

BMW Greece picked the X1 xDrive23i as the introductory model. The mini crossover is powered by a four-cylinder 2.0 liter gasoline unit. The engine is rated at 204 hp and 320 Nm (235 lb-ft). It completes the sprint in 7.1 seconds and maxes out at 145 mph (233 km/h). Its equivalent in the United States would be the BMW X1 xDrive28i, making 241 hp between 4,500-6,500 rpm, and 295 lb-ft of torque. In both models, the engine is mated exclusively to a new 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT).

Upgrading from the standard 17-inch wheels to a bigger 18-inch set costs €1,800. Alternatively, you can go even larger with 19-inch alloys and even 20-inch wheels – a first for the X1. In these photos from Greece, we also see the 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in the BMW Individual 869i bicolor design painted in Frozen Midnight Grey.

BMW will have the new compact crossover on sale in Europe from October with a choice of two gasoline and diesel engines. These will eventually be joined by a pair of plug-in hybrid versions and an extra two mild-hybrid powertrains currently in development. Of course, the electric iX1 is also coming, while the range will be topped by a first-ever M Performance model, dubbed X1 M35i.

2024 BMW iX1 xDrive30 M Sport U11 vs. 2024 X1 xDrive23i M Sport U11

2024 BMW iX1 xDrive30 M Sport U11 vs. 2024 X1 xDrive23i M Sport U11

The X1 is a crucial part of the BMW range, and the new model – with its choice of petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric power – is the best yet.

First Drive: BMW U11 X1

We sample the latest X1 tosee if it’s third time lucky forthe entry-level X model.

Words: James Fossdyke

Photos: Uwe Fischer

For BMW enthusiasts, the humble X1 is not necessarily the most desirable product in the BMW range. The smallest of the SUVs, it isn’t usually considered fast, fancy or fun enough to get the pulses racing, but the X1’s importance to BMW is not to be underestimated. The first-generation X1, codenamed E84, was launched in 2009, and between that and the introduction of the second-generation F48, a total of 2.7 million units have been sold.

2024 BMW iX1 xDrive30 M Sport U11

As a result, the new X1, which is codenamed U11, has quite a job to do. In fact, it’s one of the key pillars propping up halo products such as the forthcoming 3.0 CSL E9 and other M cars. And while those cars steal away all the glamour, it’s the poor old X1 that has to do the heavy lifting. To help it out, BMW has completely redeveloped it to the point where almost nothing has been carried over from the old car. Under the skin, the U11 sits on the same “UKL2” platform as the 1 Series and 2 Series Gran Coup., which means it also shares underpinnings with the 2 Series Active Tourer – something that becomes blindingly obvious when you see the new, more upright grille.

2024 BMW iX1 xDrive30 M Sport U11

Whatever your opinions on the front end, though, the new X1 is quite a handsome thing. The grille isn’t that much bigger than before, and the overall proportions have somehow improved. The E84 always looked a bit too small for its styling, and while the F48 was an improvement, the U11 is altogether more appealing.

2024 BMW iX1 xDrive30 M Sport U11 - interior LHD

It’s more attractive inside, too, where BMW has simply taken the 2 Series Active Tourer’s cabin and shoehorned it into the X1. That means you get the same “Curved Display” infotainment system, which houses the touchscreen and the digital instrument cluster in one enormous panel, and you get the floating centre console that houses the drive selector and some media controls. Other than that, though, the dashboard is more or less devoid of switchgear, and that’s a mixed blessing.

On the one hand, that has allowed the designers to have their way with the dash, fitting a huge wireless charging dock that would take a small tablet rather than just a conventionally sized smartphone, and leaving the rest looking clean and modern. On the other hand, that means even the climate control system has been tucked away in the touchscreen, and that’s usually an ergonomic nightmare.

However, because the X1 uses the same touchscreen as the 2 Series Active Tourer, the iX electric SUV and even the updated 3 Series, the system isn’t all that bad. The temperature settings are always displayed on a little taskbar at the bottom of the screen, for example, and that means it’s relatively easy to access and alter. Doing more complex tasks, though, requires a few more taps of the screen, and that means your attention is drawn from the road for longer. Had the iDrive controller been fitted, as it is even on the latest-generation 3 Series, the system would be a little more user-friendly.

But even without that, it’s far from the worst touchscreen system on the market. The display is clear and crisp, and the screen responds quickly to any inputs. The voice control system still needs a little work, but that’s true of any system on the market. And the digital instrument cluster that sits alongside the touchscreen is much better than anything we’ve seen in any last-gen BMWs. It’s clear and configurable and much easier to use than some of the old displays fitted to the pre-facelift 3 and 4 Series when they first came out.

As well as bringing in fresh technology, the new X1’s cabin also adds some fresh practicality. The front seats feel light and airy thanks to the low centre console and the simple dashboard, while seat adjustment is ample and headroom is plentiful, as is shoulder space. In the rear, there’s more than enough space to seat two six-foot adults, so there’s no need to worry about whether children will be happy back there – and the central transmission tunnel isn’t all that intrusive.

Luggage space is ample, too, although how much you can get in does depend on which version of the X1 you choose. Basic models get 540 litres of carrying capacity, which almost puts them on par with the larger X3. However, choosing different engine options can cut that down to as low as 490 litres. Even with that 50-litre reduction, though, it’s still a spacious family car.

As well as providing more space, the real upside to the shared platform is the ability to give the X1 pretty much any powertrain BMW likes. So, as well as the conventional petrol and diesel options, BMW will also offer customers plug-in hybrid and electric power, with the latter model wearing the new iX1 badge. As a result, the engine range is naturally very broad indeed, with no fewer than eight different options.

For those seeking straight petrol power, there’s a 136hp 1.5-litre, three-cylinder engine in the 18i, while customers can upgrade to either the 2.0-litre, 170hp 20i or the 218hp 23i, both of which use mild-hybrid tech to reduce emissions and are available with all-wheel drive. All three come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. The diesels climb a similar ladder, albeit missing the middle rung, so the basic 1.5-litre, 150hp 18d diesel is joined by the 2.0-litre, 211hp 23d unit. Again, the 2.0-litre engine uses mild-hybrid components and is offered with the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, while an automatic gearbox is standard across the range.

Above those are the two plug-in hybrid options – the 25e and the 30e – both of which combine a petrol engine with an electric motor and a rechargeable battery pack. In the case of the 245hp 25e, the engine and the electric motor drive the front wheels alone, whereas the 326hp 30e comes with all-wheel drive as standard.

Finally, there’s the 2024 BMW iX1 xDrive30 U11 which uses two electric motors and a 64.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack to drive all four wheels. With 313hp, it’s pretty brisk, as evidenced by a 0-62mph time of 5.6 seconds, but it’ll still cover more than 250 miles on a single charge – at least according to the official figures.

As well as a selection of engines, customers also have three trim levels to choose from. Things kick off with the basic Sport model, which gets LED headlights, an automatic tailgate and the Curved Display infotainment system, as well as two-zone climate control and a reversing camera. Above that is the xLine, which looks a little more rugged and comes with leatherette upholstery as standard and optional wood trim, while the range-topping M Sport gets bigger 19” alloy wheels, body-colour exterior trim and M Adaptive suspension, as well as sportier front seats. It’s a generous kit list for a car that starts at just under £34,000, undercutting most of its main rivals on a like-for-like basis.

But the X1 doesn’t just offer customers value for money. As is so often the way with BMW products, the X1 is the undeniable class leader when it comes to driver involvement. We tested the petrol xDrive23i model as well as the sDrive18d diesel and the iX1 electric version – and found all of them more interesting and more enticing to drive than any of their rivals.

Most intriguing of all is the iX1, which at just over £52,000, is on a par with its biggest rival, the Mercedes-Benz EQA. But price and size are the only ways in which those two cars can be considered equal. In every other aspect, the iX1 is vastly superior. Although it has two motors providing all-wheel- drive power, the rear wheels are only driven when absolutely necessary, as the car attempts to squeeze the maximum from its 64.7kWh battery.

Officially, that maximum range is between 259 and 270 miles, but even BMW admits that’s “125%” of what you’ll get in the real world. Our test suggested that’s roughly accurate, so something around the 200-mile mark should be achievable over a mixture of roads, assuming you don’t get too greedy with the pedal on the right. That’s easier said than done, though, because 313hp is pretty substantial for a car of this size, and a 5.7-second sprint to 62mph only hints at what the car can do. Because all the torque is available from the off, the iX1 leaps down the road every time you nudge the accelerator, and it’s even more dramatic if you push the button marked ‘Boost’. That gives you an extra 41hp for a few seconds, and that makes a noticeable difference.

The iX1 is significantly more powerful and more refined than the fossil-fuelled versions, but they aren’t without their advantages. Although the plug-in hybrids offer plenty of flexibility, the diesels promise to be the most efficient versions for those covering long distances, where economy of well over 50mpg is very tempting, but the front-wheel-drive sDrive18d option we tested had a few issues with wheelspin on damp surfaces. The petrol-powered, all-wheel-drive xDrive23i proved much more stable when pulling away, despite having more power, and it was also smoother and quieter thanks to its petrol engine. But the petrol engine also means beating 40mpg consistently is going to require a long run and a light foot.

Across all three versions of the X1, however, we found the handling to be a particular highlight. Even the sDrive18d turns into corners keenly, and the body roll is well controlled, while the steering is brilliant. It has much the same trademark BMW feel as the 3 Series saloon, and it responds almost as neatly. For a family-sized premium SUV, it’s nothing short of brilliant, and the iX1 is arguably the best of the bunch.

With the battery positioned low in the car, under the floor, you can feel the weight shifting around, but it never translates into any significant body roll. And with the larger wheels limiting movement in the sidewall of the low-profile tyres, it feels urgent and responsive while the steering feels precise. There’s ample grip from the tyres, too, even in wet conditions, and the all-wheel-drive traction allows you to put the power down pretty much anytime you like. Plenty of family hatchbacks, up to and including some more performance-orientated ones, don’t feel as natural or as responsive on the road.

Yet for all the XI’s handling prowess, the ride is less beguiling, although it should be said we only tested M Sport models with the adaptive suspension and bigger wheels. That may have contributed to the stability in corners, but it may also have impacted ride comfort. Smooth German roads played their part, too, but you can only test what’s in front of you, and we found the ride tolerable, if not silky smooth. You feel every lump, bump and pothole, but it isn’t too jarring, and it certainly won’t shake your teeth out.

Enthusiastic drivers will find it helpfully informative, telling them exactly what the wheels are doing, but it isn’t ideal for trawling around town. On motorways, however, it’s perfectly smooth enough. Whether the lesser xLine and Sport trim levels would do anything to improve the ride, thanks to their slightly smaller wheels, remains to be seen, although the larger sidewalls might blunt the handling a little.

As a result, the new X1 U11 is unquestionably a vast improvement on its predecessor ahead of any rivals. The way it drives the second to none, and the new cabin makes it every inch. the premium product. Add in fresh modern new look, and you've got a great premium SUV but it’s the range of engines it really mates special. No matter what kind of car you want y XI to be, there's an option to suit, and that should see this model become a common sight on our roads, that’s good news lor buyers, great news for BMW and even good news lor enthusiasts because whether the XI is a future classic or not, its success will help fund cars that will be.

The U11 X1 is an excellent family car, with a lovely cabin, loads of standard equipment, and plenty of space.

Kyiv Travel Guide: What You Want & Need to Know About Kyiv

travel pack bmw x1

I thought a lot about how to start my compact Kyiv travel guide, and decided to do so by describing the city itself at the beginning of this article, and I find myself re-typing and deleting words, and unable to do it justice no matter how hard I try!

So, I decided to just say this:

Kyiv is the most underrated, overlooked capital in the world, when it comes to tourism!

It is a treasure for all tourists and travelers. Kyiv is a place where you can walk the streets admiring 1000 years of marvelous architecture, experience wild nightlife to the fullest, enjoy sandy river beaches, socialize and make new friends, and even drive a tank among other things to enjoy an adrenaline rush!

Many mega-cities around the globe claim to have it all. Rarely does that prove to be the case. I’m proud that my city, falls within this rare category.

I know you have a lot of questions about it, how to get here, where to stay in Kyiv , what can you do in the city, about Kyiv nightlife … So. let’s start with the first question:

Table of Contents

Is it safe to travel to Kyiv?

The short answer is yes, it is safe for tourists!

Contrary to the bad 90’s actions movie made you think, the mafia is not roaming the streets in their long black leather coats, black shades, carrying AK-47 machine guns, robbing banks and shooting people randomly!

East Europe in general, and Kyiv in particular, are victims of negative stereotypes.

Just try mentioning your plans to fly to Ukraine to family and friends, who have never been here before, and they will be more than likely express worry and might try to discourage you from going on with your journey, and suggest you avoid this “dangerous” place!

The reality is that the capital of Ukraine is as safe as any other European capital.

Nothing testifies to that like the increasing number of tourists visiting Kyiv every day especially at its downtown, and other popular tourist attractions.

Of course, incidents and crimes do take place just like any other major city in Europe and the United States. Taking some normal caution should be enough.

One thing dominating the news, fueling doubts about the safety here, is the Ukrainian-Russian conflict .

Despite the situation in the eastern two regions of Luhansk and Donetsk , on the far east of Ukraine, no tanks are cruising the streets as the conflict is limited to a small area on the eastern border of Ukraine, about 700 km (~430 mi) from Kyiv.

The conflict zone is isolated with the extensive presence of various Ukrainian security units making the rest of the country safe to locals and visitors alike.

Is it safe to travel to Ukraine (Kyiv) alone?

Kiev population | Kiev city tour guide | Things to do in Kiev

There is not much difference between traveling to Ukraine alone versus Paris, New York, London, or Rome alone.

The same common-sense rules apply to solo travelers as well as to couples and groups of friends traveling together. However, if you are traveling alone to Kyiv, take note of my five simple safety rules:

  • Rent a good hotel/apartment in the center of Kiev
  • Do not casually flash your money on the street
  • Avoid late-night solo adventures in far areas
  • Avoid walking alone in the dark streets late at night
  • Hire me as your tour guide in Kyiv to plan and organize your visit to Kyiv from A to Z!

Simply treat Kyiv the same way you would treat your city, but with some extra caution.

Select a good area to stay, preferably at the city center, and ignore questionable characters who approach you on the street with strange offers!

I am a professional and friendly tour guide here, in Kyiv. Why don’t you allow me to help you to plan your visit and keep it safe and enjoyable?

Do I need a Visa for Ukraine?

Needing a Visa to travel to Ukraine depends on the passport you are holding. To know if you need a Visa or not, please visit the Entry regime to Ukraine for foreign citizens on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine .

In general, citizens of the United States of America, Europe, the Persian Gulf, India, China, Australia, among others, enjoy Visa-free, online, or Visa on arrival entry.

However, the duration of stay is different for each category of entry and Visa type; for that, you should review the official Visa information on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website .

If you find that you require a tourist Visa to visit Ukraine, then you should apply for it directly through the appropriate Ukrainian consular office in your country.

Acquiring tourist invitations can be helpful to ease the process. Try Googling tourist agencies offering this service.

If I can be of help, contact me and let me know !

What is the currency in Kyiv (Ukraine)?

Our currency here is the Ukrainian Hryvnia. Today, the exchange rate is 1 USD to 28 Hryvnia. However, it often changes. Check updated information displayed below;

travel pack bmw x1

How much money can I take to Ukraine?

You can cross the border with no more than the equivalent of 10,000 Euros in cash.

I do not recommend that you use this limit to the fullest; better keep the rest on your credit/debit card which are widely accepted in shops, restaurants, supermarkets, and shops. And if you need cash, simply use any ATM in the city.

Are prices in Kyiv affordable?

Yes, it is very affordable for tourists. And I dare to say that the value you will get for your money in Kyiv is not even possible by any other capital on this planet.

Make no mistakes, Kyiv is a very fancy city. We, Ukrainians spare no luxury when it comes to clubs, bars, shopping malls, and entertainment.

Just experience the nightlife scene to get a hint of the glamourous city that Kyiv is.

Nevertheless, the costs of living, food, transport and even partying is among the lowest in Europe.

Kyiv was affordable before, however, the events of the revolution (2013-2014) had taken their toll on the Hryvnia (the local Ukrainian currency), and caused it to devalue three times in value.

Of course, prices followed and went up, but a 100 USD (or 100 Euro) can still go a long way.

A decent meal in a good restaurant with drinks and maybe some desert starts from $5 to $7 per person. A 10-15 minute Uber ride outside of rush hours tops $3 to $4.

Enjoy an entire evening drinking at a bar spending only $50!

Staying in a fancy one-room apartment at the very heart of the city can be $50-$80/night. Some museums are as cheap as 10 cents for entrance!

Want to know more about prices in Ukraine?

This is why spending a minute or two reading my article Kyiv Budget Guide   will give you a better idea about budgeting and how to better manage your finances when visiting Kyiv.

Do people speak English in Kyiv?

Yes and no.

The vast majority of Ukrainians do not speak English. A lot of people do understand English, however, speaking tends to be challenging.

Unlike native English speaking countries (UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and others), Ukraine is a post-soviet country in which the dominant language was Russian.

That is why you might struggle to find English speakers among mid-age and older people, while the younger generation is much savvier with English and other languages in general.

They may be a little hesitant out of shyness, but approaching people with a smile, using simple English words, and learning a few Ukrainian or Russian words will go a long way.

Regardless, the language won’t disturb your stay, entertainment, or food.

Ordering food at restaurants and cafés should be no problem as all of them have English menus and employ a couple of waiters who do speak English.

All decent hotels, including the ones I will recommend when you trust me to plan your visit to Kyiv , have English-speaking employees at the reception.

And if you need a good interrupter in Kyiv, just contact me !

How many airports are there in Kyiv?

Kyiv has two civilian airports that are open for international flights. Arriving at either of them is fine,  Boryspil Airport and  Zhuliany Airport .

Boryspil Airport

The first is Boryspil International Airport ; its international code is KBP.

This airport is the bigger and busier in Kyiv. It is 29 kilometers (18 miles) from Kyiv.

Transport options from Boryspil (besides taxi) include airport shuttle bus. It has two stops: Kharkivska metro station and the Kyiv central railway train station .

You can also take airport shuttle trains from Boryspil to the railway station.

It’s a good option if you are not planning to stay in Kyiv and need to proceed with your journey to another city.

My advice is to use Uber . It is reliable, safer, and cheaper than the average taxi.

Zhuliany Airport

The second airport is Kyiv International Airport (Zhuliany) , easily differentiated with its international code IEV.

It’s more compact than the first and also the nearest airport to Kyiv as its located within the city limits. Zhuliany is only 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Kyiv’s center.

So, transport is not an issue with even the tram line being not far from the airport.

Getting a taxi would be better than the tram, but forget about taxis, order an Uber !

Just in case you don’t want to hustle, I can arrange for your pickup .

Where to stay in Kyiv?

travel pack bmw x1

For you as a tourist, the best place to stay is around Kyiv’s city center, or an elite part of Podil historic district.

These are the best and safest areas in Kyiv, especially for foreigners.

I recommend the area around Arena City . It is a favorite among my tourists with many nightclubs, restaurants, and tourist attractions within walking distance from it.

There are three types of accommodations for tourists: hotels, apartments, and hostels .

Couchsurfing is not a wide practice here, so better stick to hostels if you are on a tight budget.

Should I rent a hotel or an apartment in Kyiv?

The last 5-10 years have been good for Kyiv’s hotel business. Both quantity and quality went up rapidly.

Today, there is a hotel in Kyiv for every taste and budget. Many luxury hotels have their spas, so you can take advantage of that while staying there.

In my opinion, Premier Palace , Aloft , and 11 mirrors will give the best value for your money.

Apartments are generally cheaper than hotels with an extra bounce of privacy. However, hotels are always safer.

Renting an apartment is not dangerous, on the contrary, they can be as safe, or even safer. It all depends on selecting the right area and the right apartment.

There are many websites and apps like Airbnb , offering hundreds of options all around the city. Nevertheless, they don’t guarantee to get the best possible option.

In case you prefer to rent an apartment, but hesitant about doing it online, you can trust my expertise and contact me to assist you with your choice.

I went through the pros and cons of a well-detailed article about How to find good accommodation for tourists in Kyiv ; you will find many interesting things inside. I highly recommend reading it!

What is there to do in Kyiv?

Kyiv is a modern, vibrant European megapolis with a rich history.

The city’s attractions are limitless, and you can spend an entire month in it, having every meal in a new restaurant/café without visiting any restaurant twice, partying in a new place every day, exploring and enjoying a new tourist attraction every time.

I am discovering new things to do and places to visit every day!

So let me share my opinion of the top things to do in Kyiv:

Descend into the world’s deepest metro station

Riding the never-ending escalators of Arsenalna metro station is something every tourist in Kyiv should experience.

The metro system was designed and constructed during the Soviet era. The Ukrainian capital desperately needed this addition to its transport network.

Taking into consideration Kyiv’s geology and geography, engineers were forced to go deep under building the tunnels. That resulted in Arsenalna, the deepest metro station in the world.

Arsenalna is 105.5 meters or 346 feet deep below the surface. To visualize it, the Statue of Liberty to the edge of the torch is 93 meters or 305 feet, and Big Ben is 96 meters or 315 feet.

The distance is so long, it takes two-stage mega escalators to connect the entrance with the train platform.

The journey from the entrance until you board the underground train takes 5-6 minutes on average.

Tour the golden-domed churches of Kiev

Tour the golden domed churches of Kiev

Kyiv is famous for its beautiful historic golden-domed churches and cathedrals.

The architecture and design of these sites were influenced by Byzantine architecture. They have been and still are major landmarks of Orthodox Christianity.

Among them are Saint Sophia Cathedral and Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Kyiv Monastery of the Caves) , both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites , which were built around 900 years ago.

The 1000-year-old Saint Sophia’s Cathedral is the oldest major orthodox cathedral in Ukraine, and one of the holiest sites in Eastern Europe.

Fun fact, the cathedral is illustrated on the two Hryvnia bill!

travel pack bmw x1

Besides the cathedral, the complex also includes Yaroslav tomb (Sarcophagus of Yaroslav the Wise) and the spectacular southern entrance tower.

If you are a fan of architecture, touring Pecherska Lavra will be an exciting experience. It is a large complex, with over 100 monks residing inside.

The complex is built on a system of narrow tunnels connecting underground caves that contain chapels and living quarters. You will get a chance to explore some of them during your tour.

St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery is another spectacular site deserving of your attention.

The monastery is a living example of resurrection and deep routed orthodoxy in Ukraine.

It underwent painful demolition by the Soviet regime between 1934-1936, then reconstructed and rebuilt from the ground up using many authentic parts of the historic monument, saved during demolition.

St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery opened its doors again in 1999 in an independent Ukraine. Also worth your attention when you visit Kyiv.

St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery | Kiev Travel Guide

Other historic churches I suggest you also visit St Volodymyr’s Cathedral and St Andrew’s Church . Both are among the city’s top tourist attractions and are an illustration of Kyiv, and Eastern European art and architecture.

Explore Motherland Monument

Motherland Monument

It seems that many major projects that start as controversial transform into monumental landmarks.

Motherland Monument in Kyiv is one of the. It is one of 10 tallest statues in the world (7 th according to some sources), and an internationally recognized symbol of Ukraine.

The monument was built out of steel and designed to stand tall for more than 150 years.

With its base, Motherland is 102 meters or 335 feet tall. Meaning it is taller than the iconic Statue of Liberty in New York which is 93 meters or 305 feet.

There are observation decks at 36 meters (118 feet) and 91 meters (298 feet) height.

The statue itself is part of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War.

The massive memorial complex occupies over 27 acres, it also includes an exhibition of various Soviet area weapons and equipment, and I am not talking about guns and pistols, but tanks, heavy artillery, armored boats, fighter jets, attack helicopters, and even a mobile strategic missile unit for nuclear weaponry!

Second World War Museum in Kiev | What is there to do in Kiev

Don’t worry though, it is harmless and without any real warheads inside!

The complex itself is a masterpiece testament to Soviet-era art and architecture.

Before you reach Motherland Monument, you will pass through a tunnel.

There are various art exhibitions all around, the most exemplary ones are The Flame of Glory, Battle of the Dnieper Monument, and the breathtaking war panorama on the walls of the tunnel midway between the main entrance and Motherland Monument.

If history is your horse, you can easily spend half your day at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War.

Sounds interesting? Let me know to include it to your tour then!

Spend a day on the beach

Many of my tourists express their surprise when I introduce them to the beach life in Kyiv.

My city is located on the east and west banks of the Dnieper, one of Europe’s largest rivers.

The river beaches are wonderful, ideal for tanning, and relaxing after a long day of work.

Trukhanov Island is a great example of Kyiv beach life. You can meet people and socialize, rent a kayak, jet ski, or even go water skiing!

There are many beach nightclubs all around Kyiv, so why not stay after dark and join the party?

Go on an adventure

travel pack bmw x1

If you are looking for an adventure, you will find many!

There are limitless sources to make your adrenaline rush here. Some of them are exclusive to Kyiv and Ukraine.

The most famous among them is exploring the ghost town of Chernobyl. Surely, the name sounds familiar!

How about flying a plane?

Even better, jumping off one!

You can also ride a tank, and drive it after short instruction.

Extreme tourism is big here. I think we like it so much, that we unintentionally perfected it!

I wrote a detailed article about adventure tours in Kyiv , which I regularly update with new information.

I recommend you read it first for better orientation before requesting a tour so we can better plan your visit to Kyiv.

What to do in Kyiv at night?

What to do in Kiev at night

You can start the evening at one of Kyiv’s best bars, or pre-party spots, then go clubbing, meet new people, and continue partying if you still have the energy as the city has many amazing after party clubs.

Kyiv nightlife is an amazing beast that tourists find themselves tempted to try to tame. It has developed to become a major industry with various outlets, attracting tourists from all around the world.

The nightlife scene in Kyiv has it all: a romantic atmosphere, stunning clubs, buzzing bars, and friendly partygoers!

Nightclubs dominate the nightlife and are its main component. Clubs here love to organize lavish themed parties and various events.

There are many good nightclubs in Kyiv ranging from elite glamourous to underground.

Bars are not a place to get hammered, but a vibrant cultural addition to the nights of Kyiv. Spending an evening in a bar can be for the drinks, spending time with friends, while enjoying live music performances.

They can also be pre-party and after-party spot. Many bars in Kyiv organize live DJ music performances on weekends.

Many bars can be described as mini clubs themselves.

I have heard it repeatedly from tourists who travel from the States, Europe, India, Australia, and others: Kyiv nightlife is amazing !

To summarize: the night scene is exciting, glamourous, wild, safe, and affordable.

Nightlife is my most requested tour. If you are a party fan, you will find my Kyiv Nightlife Guide very useful.

Where to eat out in Kyiv?

travel pack bmw x1

When it comes to food, my city has too much to offer for you to be punishing yourself with McDonald’s and KFC!

I always try to place my tourists in Kyiv downtown. This gives them the bonus of being in short walking distance from my favorite restaurant Koya .

It’s located within Arena City complex that also hosts a large number of the best food places like The Burger , where you can enjoy a specialty burger as the name hints, or get something light to eat and socialize as in Casual Food.

If you happen to be in a hurry, just grab a fast meal at Noodle Doodle .

When it comes to class, try Coin , which is another favorite of mine and my tourists. There you are guaranteed to enjoy every meal.

If you are looking for an outstanding dining experience, going on a date, or simply want to treat yourself, look no further than Veranda . It is an elite restaurant, with an outstanding menu, great service, and a warm atmosphere.

In many aspects, Ukraine is a melting pot for cultures. Our food and restaurant scene is one clear reflection of that.

There is one street at the heart of Kyiv where you can find within 200 meters walking distance restaurants specializing in Ukrainian, Japanese, Iranian, Vietnamese, and Italian cuisine! And a Mc Donald’s, too!

I hope you are better informed now about Kyiv than before. If there are any questions you have, or want to request a private tour , feel free to contact me .

2022 bmw x1 front

Select a year

  • Lows Unsupportive standard front seats, aging infotainment interface, bland styling.
  • Verdict The X1's eager driving dynamics and cargo-friendly cabin will please enthusiasts and pragmatists alike.

What's New for 2022?

BMW has made no notable changes to the X1 for 2022, and the brand's boxy subcompact SUV rolls right into the new model year sporting the same look.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2022 BMW X1 starts at $36,395 and goes up to $38,395 depending on the trim and options.

We'd suggest you stick with the front-wheel-drive sDrive28i, since moving up to the all-wheel-drive xDrive model doesn't exactly improve the X1's chances of tackling the Rubicon Trail. It'll also save you $2000, which we'd put toward the M Sport package, not only because we like its sportier appearance but because we prefer that package's more sculpted sport seats.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

There is only one engine and transmission pairing for the X1: a silky 228-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The turbo four provides plenty of pep as well as good fuel efficiency. In our all-wheel-drive test vehicle, we managed a 6.3-second 60-mph time , which makes it one of the quicker entries in this class. Front-wheel drive is standard. The optional all-wheel-drive system favors the front wheels, although up to 100 percent of the engine's output can, for brief moments in low-traction scenarios, flow to the rear.

2020 bmw x1 rear

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The X1 boasts competitive fuel-economy ratings for its class, although the Mercedes-Benz GLA250 beats it in both city and highway EPA numbers. And the all-wheel-drive X1 we tested delivered just 29 mpg on the highway, 2 mpg short of its EPA rating. For more information about the X1's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The X1's interior is nicely appointed with mostly premium materials. But poke around and you'll find evidence of cost cutting. The glovebox door is as flimsy as a plastic lunchbox, and the bin hidden under the front seat, while useful, feels as if BMW bought it in bulk from a dollar-store fire sale. The cockpit has a driver-focused layout, reinforcing the X1's sporty personality. Facing the driver is a businesslike gauge cluster that looks elegant and is easy to read at a glance. The driving position is great, although the steering-wheel adjustments could use more range of motion in both angle and reach. The cargo area is carpeted, trimmed in chrome, and cavernous. We managed to fit seven carry-on cases behind the second row and 19 total with the rear seat folded.

2020 bmw x1 interior

Infotainment and Connectivity

The X1's standard infotainment system is intuitive and easy to operate while on the go but perhaps a little dated. The 8.8-inch iDrive system comes with in-dash navigation, Apple CarPlay capability (Android Auto is not offered), Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio, a USB port, and a seven-speaker audio system. A 12-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system is optional. To control all these things, BMW provides a rotary knob on the center console that fits comfortably beneath the driver's right hand. The controller is surrounded by shortcut buttons for phone, nav, and other functions.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

Basic driver-assistance features are provided at no cost, but more advanced technology will require adding option packages. For more information about the X1's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning
  • Standard lane-departure warning
  • Standard automatic high-beam headlamps

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

BMW's limited warranty and powertrain protection are ordinary for the class, but the company sweetens the deal with three years of free scheduled maintenance. The Lexus NX and Lincoln MKC offer the same limited warranties, and they provide six-year or 70,000-mile powertrain coverage, but both come with shorter periods of complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles

Golden Gate (Volodymyrska St, 40A)

kiev-private-tour-guide

Standing as a majestic testament to the ancient city of Kyiv, the Golden Gate is a triumphal stone archway that once served as the main entrance to the city. Erected in the 11th century by Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise , this remarkable structure is a testament to the architectural prowess of Kyivan Rus and its admiration for Byzantine traditions, as exemplified by the Golden Gate of Constantinople.

Bearing witness to centuries of history, the Golden Gate endured the ravages of time, including a devastating attack by the Mongols in 1240. Despite its partial destruction, it remained in use as a vital passageway into Kyiv until the mid-16th century.

In the early 1980s, meticulous archaeological excavations brought the Golden Gate back to life, revealing its grandeur and historical significance. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a museum that houses artefacts and exhibits that chronicle the rich history of Kyiv and its iconic landmark.

Just a few meters away, you may see a red, gothic-style building in the form of a medieval castle.

Castle of Baron Steingel (Yaroslaviv Val St, 1)

castle-of-baron-kyiv-guide

Castle of Baron Steingel, Kyiv

One of Kyiv’s most intriguing and mysterious buildings is the Castle of Baron, a neo-Gothic mansion resembling a medieval fortress.

Locals are captivated by the Golden Gate’s romantic allure, particularly the pair of sculptures adorning its façade. With their clawed hands and feet, these winged devils possess a bestial visage that casts a menacing gaze upon passersby. A baron never owned the castle, but a famous winemaker, Maxim Steingel, lived in a simpler house beside it. Why is it called the Castle of Baron, then? You may learn on a private tour with a local expert guide!

As you approach the Golden Gate, you will be greeted by a majestic Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise statue. In his hands, he holds a replica of St.Sophia Cathedral. The cathedral is a Byzantine and Ukrainian architectural masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You can walk to the cathedral from the Golden Gate in just 7 minutes and admire its stunning frescoes, mosaics, and domes.

Saint Sophia Cathedral (Volodymyrska St, 24)

travel pack bmw x1

St.Sophia Cathedral is a must-see attraction in Kyiv, as it is the oldest surviving Christian church in the East Slavic region. It dates back to the 11th century and boasts an impressive collection of original mosaics and frescoes covering over 3000 square meters.

These artworks are considered masterpieces of world art and reflect the Byzantine and Ukrainian styles and traditions. St.Sophia is a UNESCO World Heritage site , operating as a museum, not as a church.

You will be amazed by the beauty and spirituality of this place.

⭐️ Here is a tip from me: if you stand on the spot where you can see both the Mother of God – Oranta mosaic in the main altar and the Jesus Almighty image in the dome above you, you can make a wish, and it will come true.

Across Sofiyska Square, about 500 meters away, you will find another important and magnificent temple of Kyiv and Ukraine: St.Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery.

The sky-blue cathedral with its golden domes is a replica of the 12th-century cathedral demolished by the Soviet regime. It is now a working monastery and the seat of the Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

To the right of St.Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery, you will see a massive grey building – the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is where the diplomatic relations of Ukraine are conducted.

A short walk from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take you to St.Andrew’s Church , one of Kyiv’s most stunning and distinctive churches. This church is a masterpiece of Ukrainian baroque art created by the renowned Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli.

St.Andrew’s Church (Andriivs’kyi descent, 23)

The church was built in the mid-18th century by the order of Empress Elizabeth, who planned to have a summer residence in Kyiv. The church stands on a hill overlooking the Dnipro River and the Podil district, the oldest part of the city. St.Andrew’s church has a fascinating history and legend. It survived wars, fires, and earthquakes and was never consecrated.

⭐️ You can enjoy a breathtaking view of the river, the city, and the sky from the observation deck around St.Andrew’s Church.

Andriyivsky Descent

At the bottom of the church sprawls a paradise for tourists – a souvenir and craftsmen market. The street, often called “Montmartre of Kyiv”, is a site of museums, galleries, art workshops, antique and souvenir shops.

This is where tourists can always buy Ukrainian souvenirs – figurines, pottery, embroidery, wooden caskets, and other things made by Ukrainian artisans and craftsmen.

At Andriyivskyy Descent, you can stop for lunch in a Ukrainian cuisine restaurant, a cafe, a beer pub, or a wine bar. In the afternoon, I suggest you move to the Upper Town area of Kyiv.

After a morning of exploring Kyiv’s historical and cultural attractions, you can spend the afternoon more contemplatively and peacefully. Visit the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most sacred places in Eastern Orthodoxy.

The Lavra, which means monastery, was founded in the 11th century by monks who dug caves and lived in them as hermits. You can enter these caves and see the mummified bodies of the saints, who are revered for their miracles and wisdom.

The Lavra is not only a place of solitude but also a place of beauty and glory. The complex includes several stunning churches, such as the Dormition Cathedral, the Trinity Gate Church, and the Refectory Church.

You can also see the Motherland Monument , a colossal statue commemorating the Soviet victory over Nazism in World War II. The view from the tower is breathtaking and serene, and it will make you appreciate the harmony between nature and human creation.

  • Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Monastery and Caves
  • National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War

If you want to get from the Old Town to the Upper Town in a fast and fun way, you can take the metro. Just walk to the main street of Khreschatyk from any street in the Old Town and hop on the metro for one stop to Arsenalna station .

You will have the chance to experience the world’s deepest metro station, which is 105.5 meters (346 ft) below the ground.

This is because Kyiv is located on the high bank of the Dnipro River, which rises above the rest of the city. The metro ride is an adventure in itself, and it will take you to the historical and spiritual centre of Kyiv.

Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Monastery and Caves (Lavrska St, 15)

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a unique monastery complex that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list and one of the seven wonders of Ukraine. It is the only sacred place in the Eastern Orthodox world that you can only find in Ukraine.

The first monks were true ascetics; they lived and died in the caves, dedicating their lives to praying for humanity. You can visit these caves and see the relics of the saints, who are believed to have miraculous powers.

If you want to see the whole complex, with all the cathedrals, monastery buildings, and the Grand Bell Tower, you must buy an entrance ticket for 80 UAH. For a better experience, book a private Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Tour .

You will be amazed by the beauty and splendour of these structures, which reflect the Eastern Orthodox faith and Ukrainian history.

If you only want to see the caves, you can do it for free. Just walk about 400 meters past the main entrance to the Lavra complex and look for the striped fence barrier on the left.

This is the way down to the caves. You will need a candle to light your way, as the caves are dark and narrow. You must also dress modestly and cover your head as a sign of respect.

Near the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, you will see a striking contrast between Kyiv’s religious and military aspects. There is a memorial complex of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War.

National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the WWII (Lavrska St, 24)

If you are fascinated by WWII history on the Eastern Front, you should not miss the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War. This museum will give you a comprehensive and chronological overview of the war, from its causes to its consequences.

You will see the main battles on the Soviet-German front line, the heroism and suffering of the Ukrainian people, and the victory and liberation of the country.

The museum has 16 halls with various exhibits, such as documents, photos, weapons, uniforms, medals, and personal belongings of the soldiers and civilians.

The museum also has an impressive outdoor exhibition, where you can see different types of military equipment, such as tanks, helicopters, artillery guns, and rocket launchers.

You can also admire the sculptures that depict the spirit and courage of the Ukrainian people who fought against the Nazi invaders.

The most prominent feature of the museum is the Motherland Monument , a 102-meter statue of a female warrior holding a sword and a shield. This statue is a symbol of the motherland and its defenders.

⭐️ If you are adventurous, climb to the observation deck in the statue’s shield. You will have a stunning view of the city from above. Doing it is not very difficult if you wear comfortable sports clothes and shoes.

You will be accompanied by a guide, who will instruct you and lead you up to the deck. You must take two small elevators and two ladders to reach the top. It is a thrilling and rewarding experience.

Kyiv is an easy city to get around. For much of this itinerary, you can travel on foot, and then use Kyiv public transport to get to the Upper Town.

I would suggest a metro. The metro network is easy to use. It consists of red, green, and blue lines, 52 stations, and three interchange nodes. Kyiv subway is contactless. Your metro travel can be paid for with contactless payment bank cards.

You can also buy a Kyiv Smart Card, put in as much money as you need, and pay for travel on any public transport. In the cabin of land transport, you need to bring a card or ticket to the validator and pay for trip.

Kyiv is big, diverse, and unspoiled by the tourist masses. Without a doubt, it can satisfy the most demanding travellers. Ancient history, authentic various architecture, vibrant food culture, friendly and hospitable citizens.

On top of that, Kyiv is a fabulously green city in spring and summer. You can’t walk far without passing through a park.

When peace returns to Ukraine, and it is safe to travel to Kyiv, prepare for an unforgettable trip. Whether you want to discover it with a private tour guide or alone, I guarantee you will not regret it!

Travelling to the capital of Ukraine can be a real offbeat European adventure like nowhere else.
