Our first office was located near UCLA in Westwood Village, California, because I thought professors planning sabbaticals would make for great clientele. With a developing reputation in the travel industry, the company grew and I opened a second office in 1980, followed by more branches across the Golden State.

As Chairman and [former] CEO of TravelStore, my goal has always been to make sure our company is operating with the most sophisticated technology, while ensuring we continue to deliver a personalized level of service to each of our clients.

In 2005, I made the decision to create an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), allowing our employees to benefit from being part owners in TravelStore.

Though my initial hope that professors would be our best clients didn’t exactly prove to be true, TravelStore has become much bigger and more successful than I ever imagined.

We have always been guided by values like humility, integrity and respect in how we work with each other and we have strived to treat others the way we wish to be treated. This is the philosophy that has brought us much success. As we look to the future, it gives me great confidence and pride to know that no matter how much the world may change, you can rely on TravelStore to act in accordance with these values.

My sincere thanks to all of our professional agents and staff, the preferred suppliers we work with, and to our respected clients without whom our success would not be possible.

Walnuts sold in some San Diego stores linked to E. Coli outbreak

By city news service • published 24 mins ago • updated 15 mins ago.

A multi-state food safety alert was issued Wednesday for an E. coli outbreak possibly linked to organic walnut halves and pieces sold in bulk bins at natural food stores and food co-ops in Southern California and elsewhere.

The Gibson Farms walnut pieces were distributed at stores in cities including San Diego, San Marcos, Escondido and Encinitas, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The walnuts have expiration dates between May 21, 2025, and June 7, 2025.

So far, six people have reported possible E. coli illness in California, the CDC said. Gibson Farms, based in Hollister, has initiated a product recall, the public health agency said.

The CDC said almost all the sick people reported purchasing organic walnuts from bulk bins in food co-ops or natural food stores.

These are the stores in San Diego that had the walnut pieces:

  • Jimbos Naturally- 10511 4-S Commons Drive, 12841 El Camino Real and 1633 S Centre City Parkway

Hey, Lemon Grove! NBC 7 Is Going In Your Neighborhood on Thursday

Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting. Symptoms begin anywhere from a few days after consuming contaminated food or up to nine days later.

The severity or presence of certain symptoms may depend on the type of pathogenic  E. coli  that is causing the infection. Some infections can cause severe bloody diarrhea and lead to life-threatening conditions, such as a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), or the development of high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and neurologic problems.

La Valencia

You can’t beat this prime La Jolla location, walkable to beaches, shopping, and restaurants; it’s one of La Jolla’s only hotels located within walking distance to both the beach and downtown.

The room sizing can feel cramped, and noise can be an issue.

With a nearly century-long history, this recognizable hotel with a signature pink facade and Spanish-tiled tower, remains a landmark in La Jolla. Situated on distinctive Prospect Street, atop the bluffs with views of the ocean and La Jolla Cove, the location is prime for exploring beaches and local businesses. On site are the Mediterranean Room ocean-view restaurant as well as the La Sala Lounge and a Peloton-equipped fitness center.

Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa

With a location ideally situated for visitors to the University of California, San Diego, this recently renovated property is verdant and peaceful.

While we love the mission-style architecture of the property, the room design is a bit underwhelming in comparison.

This La Jolla property recently completed a major renovation of its 210 guest rooms and suites, plus its multiple lawn spaces, and added a new apiary and chef’s garden. The sprawling property includes 10 acres of gardens, stone pathways, serene courtyards, and fountains. The hotel also features a full-service spa, a large pool deck and cabanas, wellness programs which include outdoor yoga and barre classes, and three on-site dining destinations.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines

Cory Bjork / The Lodge at Torrey Pines

This charming property offers excellent access to golf, hiking, and other outdoor activities.

Some visitors noted aging finishes and rooms in need of updates.

Set atop the cliffs of Torrey Pines State Beach in La Jolla, The Lodge offers views of the ocean as well as the Torrey Pines Golf Course. With its post-and-beam construction, The Lodge is modeled after Pasadena’s Gamble and Blacker houses, exemplary of early-1900s Craftsman architecture.

Here there are 170 guest rooms and suites, as well as the 9,500-square-foot Spa at Torrey Pines. There’s also a croquet lawn, heated outdoor pool and cabanas, whirlpool, and terrace with chaises, plus access to hiking at the state reserve and golf at the iconic 36-hole course that hosts the PGA Tour’s annual Farmers Insurance Open.

  • Distance from Airport: 15 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Del Mar Race Track, Scripps Aquarium, La Jolla Playhouse, Torrey Pines Golf Course
  • Rates : From $422
  • Parking : Yes, self-parking ($55 per day) or 24-hour valet service ($65 per day)
  • Pet Policy : One dog weighing 50 pounds or less, or two smaller dogs (with a combined weight of 75 pounds or less) are permitted; a non-refundable room cleaning fee of $150 on the day of check-in is required.

Know Before You Go

Don’t expect beach weather year-round.

While San Diego is much warmer than most of the country during the winter months, it still may not be warm enough for lounging at the beach — think daytime temperatures in the 50s and 60s Fahrenheit — so plan for some non-beach activities if you’re traveling in cooler months. That said, even January surprises with the occasional beach day. Layers are always a good idea.

Consider renting a car

While the downtown area is very walkable, San Diego is a sprawling and spread-out city where many residents rely on cars. If you’re looking to go hiking or explore other parts of the county, you may want to have your own car for easier access. Do expect traffic, and build it into your timeline planning.

What’s the best way to get to San Diego?

San Diego International Airport (SAN) is conveniently located near the city’s downtown, and its manageable scale makes arriving and departing relatively sane. If you’re coming from elsewhere in California, Amtrak’s Surfliner is one of the country’s most scenic routes. It travels over 350 miles along the coast between San Luis Obispo to the north and San Diego to the south. If you’re arriving by car, the major freeways into the city include the 5, 8, and 15.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A pair of giant pandas will soon make the journey from China to the U.S., where they will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo as part of an ongoing conservation partnership between the two nations, officials said Monday.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said its caretakers recently visited China to meet the giant pandas, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, ahead of their planned trip to Southern California. An exact date for the handoff hasn’t been set.

Yun Chuan, a mild-mannered male who’s nearly 5 years old, has “deep connections” to California, the wildlife alliance said. His mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at the San Diego Zoo in 2007 to parents Bai Yun and Gao Gao.

Xin Bao is a nearly 4-year-old female described as “a gentle and witty introvert with a sweet round face and big ears.”

“Our conservation partners in China shared photographs and personality traits of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, but meeting them in person was so special,” said Dr. Megan Owen, the alliance’s vice president of conservation science. “It’s inspiring as people from around the world come together to conserve, protect, and care for these special bears, and we can’t wait to welcome them to San Diego.”

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has a nearly 30-year partnership with leading conservation institutions in China focused on protecting and recovering giant pandas and the bamboo forests they depend on.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog chief will visit Iran next week as concerns rise about uranium enrichment

FILE - International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi waits to meet Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida shakes hands at the prime minister's office in Tokyo Thursday, March 14, 2024. The head of the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog will travel to Iran next week as Tehran’s nuclear program enriches uranium a step away from weapons-grade levels and international oversight remains limited, officials said Wednesday.

Rafael Mariano Grossi’s visit will coincide with a nuclear energy conference Iran will hold in the central city of Isfahan, which hosts sensitive enrichment sites and was targeted in an apparent Israeli attack on April 19 . It also coincides with wider regional tensions in the Mideast inflamed by the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip, including attacks on shipping by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen .

The director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency will visit Iran on May 6 and 7, the Vienna-based agency said. It did not elaborate on his schedule or his meetings.

Iranian state television has described the conference in Isfahan as an “international conference on nuclear sciences and techniques.” The broadcaster quoted Mohammed Eslami, the head of Iran’s civilian nuclear program, as saying on Wednesday that Grossi will attend the conference and meet with him and other officials.

“I am sure that the ambiguities will be resolved and we can strengthen our relations with the agency within the framework of safeguards and” the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty , Eslami said.

Tensions have only grown between Iran and the IAEA since then-President Donald Trump in 2018 unilaterally withdraw America from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers. Since then, Iran has abandoned all limits the deal put on its program and now has enough enriched uranium for “several” nuclear bombs if it chose to build them, Grossi has warned .

IAEA surveillance cameras have been disrupted, while Iran has barred some of the agency’s most experienced inspectors . Iranian officials have increasingly threatened they could pursue atomic weapons, particularly after launching an unprecedented drone-and-missile attack on Israel last month.

Iran has always denied seeking nuclear weapons, saying its atomic program is for purely civilian purposes. However, U.S. intelligence agencies and the IAEA say Iran had an organized military nuclear program up until 2003.

The latest American intelligence community assessment says Iran “is not currently undertaking the key nuclear weapons-development activities necessary to produce a testable nuclear device.”

Associated Press writer Amir Vahdat in Tehran, Iran, contributed to this report.
