Get lost in the wilds of southern Piedmont in Gavi.

Gavi Territory

The Gavi territory is in the south-western part of Piedmont, on the border with Liguria . In 1800, thanks to Ligurian aristocracy, the wine became a product of the court, also thanks to its ability to be paired perfectly with traditional recipes of that area, made with fish and vegetables.

It spread all around Europe, from Germany to Switzerland and also went overseas, arriving in South America thus creating the basis for a future export market. T he white Gavi, or Cortese di Gavi was recognized a DOC wine in 1974 and DOCG in 1998, with further changes for the varieties “riserva fermo” and “riserva spumante metodo classico” in 2010. The types of Gavi that can be produced are: still, fizzy, sparkling, reserve, and reserve sparkling classic method.

The Gavi territory is mainly hilly, with uplands rich in red soil as a result of the clayish marl of that area . The winds from the bordering Ligurian coast, condition and typify the microclimate giving the wine perfumes of citrus fruits with hints of grapefruit, pineapple and white flowers which join an important, tasteful and mineral structure that is completed by its typical hints of bitter almonds.

Private Guided Winery Tour at La Raia

La Raia is a byodinamic farm and it is located in the heart of Gavi hills, in an area with an ancient wine tradition thanks to a unique microclimate that promotes the maturation of the grape and the production of red and white biodynamic wines.

The estate extends over 180 hectars, including 45 of vineyards , 60 of fields and the remaining are pastures, chestnut, elderflower and acacia woodlands protecting numerous species of wild animals.  The Rossi Cairo family bought La Raia in 2003, with the aim of recovering and enhancing the original ecosystem through a broad intervention project, inspired by the biodynamic principles.

The first change was the conversion of the vine cultivations: green manure among the rows, dynamized horn manure to fertilize the marly soil deeply, intense aeration, absence of pesticides, moderate quantities of cave sulphur and copper sprayed during specific periods of the year. Pruning happens during a descending moon.

Day 1: Lunch

Private Guided Winery Tour at Villa Sparina

The history of Villa Sparina goes back to the 1700s when it was part of a grand colonial estate immersed in the vineyards of Monterotondo, in the heart of Gavi .

The winery, founded in the 1970s by the Moccagatta family, is comprised of one hundred hectares of land, sixty of which are vineyards, surrounded by woods, refreshed by the Ligurian breeze and kissed by the sun. The vines are primarily the most important local grape variety, Cortese, which makes one of the most prestigious white wine of the region:  Gavi DOCG .

The soul and prestige of Villa Sparina can be found in their Monterotondo label. This cru wine represents the highest quality of Villa Sparina production, a white wine made with 100% Cortese grapes grown in a 1945-era vineyard . It displays savouriness, minerality and incredible longevity. You will enjoy a private guide winery tour, visiting the medieval cellar followed by a tasting of the three most prestigious Villa Sparina labels.

Travel Logistics & What to Know Before You Go

Piedmont is well-connected by road, rail, and air. The region’s main airport, Turin-Caselle, offers international flights and easy access to major cities like Turin, Asti, and Alba. You can also fly into Milan , just a couple of hours’ drive from Piedmont. Trains and buses operate throughout the region, although renting a car provides greater flexibility to explore the picturesque countryside and visit smaller wineries at your leisure. When driving, do note that Italy’s narrow and winding roads can be challenging for some; take your time and enjoy the scenery.

While Italian is the official language, you’ll find that locals are proud of their regional dialect, Piedmontese. This distinct language, though related to Italian, has its own unique charm. Although many locals speak English, especially in popular tourist areas, it’s always appreciated when visitors make an effort to learn a few Italian phrases. Start with the basics: “Buongiorno” (good morning), “Grazie” (thank you), and “Salute” (cheers)!

The Local Vibe

Piedmont’s locals are known for their warmth and hospitality. Embrace the Italian concept of “la dolce vita” (the sweet life) and take the time to truly connect with the people you meet. Visit local markets, dine at family-owned trattorias, and strike up conversations with winemakers. You’ll find that their passion for their land and their crafts is contagious, and these interactions will leave a lasting impression on your heart.

In Italy, tipping is not as customary as it is in some other countries. However, it’s always appreciated when you acknowledge exceptional service. In restaurants, a service charge may be included in the bill, but if not, a tip of around 10% is considered generous. For other services, like tour guides or taxi drivers, rounding up to the nearest euro or adding a few extra euros as a token of appreciation is a kind gesture.

Other Important Piedmont Travel Tips

As you explore Piedmont’s wineries, make sure to book your visits in advance, as many smaller wineries require reservations for tastings and tours. Dress comfortably and modestly, especially when visiting churches or religious sites. Finally, be prepared for the Italian tradition of “riposo,” the afternoon break when many shops and businesses close for a few hours. Take this time to rest, indulge in a leisurely lunch, or perhaps enjoy a rejuvenating “passeggiata” (stroll) through the stunning vineyards.

Piedmont Grape Varieties

The main grape varieties found in Piedmont include Nebbiolo, Barbera , and Dolcetto for red wines, and Moscato, Cortese , and Arneis for white wines. Nebbiolo, the king of Piedmont grapes, is the grape responsible for the region’s most prestigious wines, Barolo and Barbaresco. These wines are celebrated for their complex aromas, structured tannins, and excellent aging potential. Barbera and Dolcetto are more approachable, producing fruity, easy-drinking reds. Moscato, on the other hand, is the primary grape in Asti, yielding sweet, aromatic sparkling wines, while Cortese and Arneis are used for crisp, refreshing white wines.

What makes Piedmont truly special is the harmony between its unique landscape, passionate winemakers, and time-honored traditions. The fog that often blankets the region’s rolling hills plays a crucial role in the ripening process of the grapes, creating an air of mystique and romance. The deep connection between the people and the land is palpable, as generations of families have tended to the vineyards and crafted exceptional wines that reflect the essence of Piedmont.

Cuisine of Piedmont

In addition, the region’s rich culinary heritage, which includes dishes like truffles, risotto, and braised meats, complements the wines and further elevates the gastronomic experience. Piedmont’s unique combination of natural beauty, diverse terroir, and dedication to preserving traditions, alongside its world-class wines, makes it a truly enchanting destination for wine enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike.

Additionally, fall in Piedmont is marked by numerous wine and food festivals, such as the Alba White Truffle Fair and the Barolo and Barbaresco wine festivals. These events offer a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture, sample regional delicacies, and enjoy a variety of wines. While fall is the peak time for wine enthusiasts, visiting during other seasons also has its merits. Spring offers mild weather and blooming landscapes, while winter can provide a more intimate experience with fewer tourists. Summer is just beautiful with everything bright and green. Regardless of the season, ensure you check winery opening hours and make reservations in advance to secure your tastings.
