I met a man on a business trip and left my marriage to be with him. I have no regrets.

  • Nicole Fallon-Peek met her now-husband Sean during a business trip to Boston in 2017.
  • After leaving her previous marriage, Fallon-Peek and Sean began a long-distance relationship.
  • Once he moved to be with her, they quit their jobs and started their own business together.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Nicole Fallon-Peek, the co-CEO of Lighting Media Partners. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I met my now-husband, Sean, in 2017 while we were working for the same digital publishing company.

I worked out of the New York office as a managing editor, and Sean worked out of the Ogden, Utah, office as an assistant managing editor. I was on the same level as his boss, but we didn't work directly with or for each other.

There was an instant spark when we met

We met on a business trip to our Boston office. It was my first business trip, and I was excited to connect with new people. I had no idea that one of those people would later become my husband.

I knew of Sean because we'd been on virtual meetings before, but I'd never spoken to him. When we met in the office that morning, we both knew there was a connection. I joke that it was love at first handshake.

He was one of the nicest, most charming people I'd ever met. He was very polite, but he wasn't afraid of a little self-deprecating humor .

We went to the hotel bar every night with colleagues and flirted with each other the entire time. We're big foodies, so when we'd go out to team dinners, I'd ask him if I could try something from his plate.

I was married to someone else then, but I didn't feel guilty because it felt so natural to be talking and laughing with Sean — like we'd known each other forever despite having just met.

Our goodbye on that trip was awkward. When I came down to the hotel lobby to check out, I saw him sitting there waiting for his Uber to the airport. We met each other's eyes and smiled, but we didn't get a chance to say goodbye because he was already gone by the time I'd checked out.

We found ways to spend more time together virtually during the workday

Sean and I emailed to trade phone numbers after the trip because we felt silly asking each other in person. We tried to be professional and draw a line. If we were talking about work things, we would communicate on work platforms, but I would text Sean sometimes during work to talk about personal stuff.

We found an excuse to schedule a one-on-one call to discuss a project one of our mutual colleagues was working on. We talked about the actual business purpose of the call and then went on for another 30 minutes talking about personal stuff.

Related stories

That call was it for me. I thought, "This could definitely be something real."

Meeting Sean was the confirmation I needed to leave my marriage

Before I met Sean, I was already one foot out the door of my previous marriage , but meeting him was the catalyst to finally leave.

It took less than two weeks for me to realize I was head over heels in love with Sean. He told me he didn't want to be the sole reason I ended my marriage, but I ended it because I wasn't happy.

My ex-spouse sensed my unhappiness and wasn't surprised when I shared those feelings, but they were definitely shocked and hurt that I'd realized it because I met someone else.

I do feel bad about the emotional pain I caused them, but we both said to each other and to family and friends that we're better off for having split up. It would've happened at some point regardless of whether Sean was in the picture.

I was nervous to tell my coworkers I left my marriage for someone at the company

I was a little nervous to share that I had left my marriage and was dating someone who worked in our Utah office. Sean and I also didn't know the policy as we'd never had a reason to look — neither of us thought we'd meet our soulmate at work.

We kept talking after the business trip and decided to make things official. Two months later, we told our bosses. We didn't want people at work to find out from the company rumor mill.

I sat my boss down and said, "Hey, I just want to tell you that we've been long-distance dating. I hope that's not a problem. We don't report to each other, so we figured maybe it'll be OK."

My boss was super happy for me. She said, "I knew it! You guys are great. This is not a problem. Do your thing. It's all good." Everyone else at the office was happy that I was happy. They knew I struggled in my previous relationship.

My boss helped Sean transfer to New York

My boss helped Sean get an opportunity on another team in the New York office a few months later. I was also looking for a place to live at that time so I told him that even though it was kind of soon, our relationship was on a good track and I wanted to move in together. He agreed.

We found a place, started commuting into the office together, and spent as much time as we could to make up for not being able to see each other every day during those four months of our long-distance relationship.

We decided to start our own venture

We eventually both felt stuck in our jobs and didn't see opportunities for growth. We had similar skills and knew we could work together — and we had already talked about marriage and starting a family — so we decided to start our own business. We quit together in 2018.

Our decision to start Lighting Media Partners has paid off. We had some business friction early on — I'm a "jump first, ask questions later" person and Sean is the opposite, but we've worked through it.

We got married in November 2019 and now have a 10-month-old daughter.

If you meet your soulmate at work, go for it

If you meet your soulmate at work and are both committed to the relationship, just go for it. Jobs come and go. If you have to choose between a career and the love of your life, go for love.

That's the hopeless romantic in me, but I don't regret a single decision I made once I met Sean. My career and personal life are both better for it.

Trip Report:

The Airbnb I’d rented for the stay was conveniently located, a short walk to many points of interest, restaurants, etc in the center of the city. The agent for the apartment was not as communicative pre-visit as I’d expected. However, arriving at the third-floor walk-up apartment a couple of hours before the approved check-in time expecting to wait - the agent was there, the door was open and a woman was cleaning the apartment. We spoke, I received the door codes, dropped by bags and went to explore.

My visit coincided with the ‘Festival Cultural Zacatecas 2024’: March 23 > April 6. Each day was filled with concerts, smaller performances, art exhibitions, museum events. Some business owners I spoke with shared their opinions that smaller number of visitors were expected because of concern for personal safety; parts of Zacatecas have seen drug cartel violence. Throughout the visit, though, military / National Guard were present - their presence was not overwhelming. I was unaware of any personal safety risks as I explored the city.

The center of Zacatecas is a walking person’s delight, but there are inclines to maneuver. My days were filled with a lot of walking (and having the opportunity to speak with many people), attending the Lila Downs outdoor concert, the Craft Beer Festival, return visit to Museo Rafael Coronel and its collection of masks in addition to the Rafael Coronel artwork / sculptures and some good restaurant meals.

My apartment included a rooftop deck from which I could clearly listen to all of the concerts being held in the nearby ‘Plaza de Armas’, including Jessica Caraveo and La Orquesta de Beto Díaz.

Restaurants I ate at:

La Leyenda Restaurante & Museo

Restaurante Los Cencerros

Finca Serrano

Praguery (Custard)

Casa Faustina

Restaurante Vikingos

Without a doubt, dining at 'Finca Serrano' and having the custard cone at 'Praguery' were dining highlights of this visit, and the discovery of Praguery was the food highlight of the 11-day visit to Mexico (Aguascalientes and CDMX followed Zacatecas). I have posted reviews in TAs Zacatecas restaurant guide section. If you have questions, please ask.

About the Airbnb: it’s an apartment I would not / will not recommend to others. There were misrepresentations in the description, maintenance issues unattended to, and it was situated next door to a restaurant that played excessively loud music outside from 4 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. or until after Midnight. The roof terrace lacked sufficient furniture to enjoy the space. My legs hung over the end of the bed by 3 or 4 inches. Airbnb is not publishing my review. Next time, I’ll be in a hotel (as I was previously).

This was a great visit to a great destination. If you have the opportunity to visit Zacatecas (city), do so.

From Zacatecas I took an ETN bus to the city of Aguascalientes.

Here’s what I learned as a frequent flyer on my most recent trip

Air travel is changing for Alaskans. But that’s normal. Still, trip reports can be helpful to make your next trip more convenient, more affordable, or both.

Here’s my report: Earlier this week I dragged my bags to the car in the blowing snow. I found myself humming “California Dreamin’ ” on the drive to the airport.

This was a quick trip, with no bags to check. So I skipped the counter entirely and headed straight to security.

But the first part of the trip started several days before, selecting my flights and seats.

Although the trip wasn’t last-minute, it still was more expensive than the cheapest of the cheap tickets available between Alaska and California.

Further, I had some time constraints, which meant Alaska Air’s nonstop from Anchorage to LAX just wouldn’t work. The combination of daytime flights and picking a flight to a suburban airport (Burbank) drove the price up.

Rather than pay almost $500 for a one-way ticket, I opted to cash in some miles, which allowed me to pick my seats in advance.

There were very few seats available on either flight. But I kept checking the seat map after I purchased the ticket — and was able to get window seats closer to departure.

trip my trip

I purchased the return ticket in time to get a better rate.

Alaska Air oversells its flights but constantly monitors the loads and reaches out to travelers in advance to see if they are willing to change their plans — for a price.

The first email I received offered a $25 credit if I would change my flight times. None of the flight options worked for me, though.

But the next email got my attention: Alaska Air offered me a $250 credit if I would settle for a much longer layover in Seattle, plus a red-eye departure. Honestly, I tried to make it work. But the times and seating selection both were bad.

Later, I received an offer for $45 to change my return flight back to Anchorage. I clicked the button, since the new flight times were better. However, I failed to check the available seating in advance. So now I’m sitting back by the potty. Lesson learned: Double-check the available seating on any new flight the airline offers.

[ What to know as Alaska Airlines unveils new initiatives and changes to rewards programs ]

By the time I got to the gate in Anchorage, every seat was filled on the plane. Then the gate agent started canvassing the crowd to check their carry-ons to free up a little more room in the overhead bins.

Speaking of extra space, parking is tight at the Anchorage airport, particularly in the short-term garage. Due to construction, the short-term garage is shutting the top floor, resulting in a 25% reduction in available space through Aug. 1. Get a ride to the airport, or check out the off-airport lots at Alaska Park or Diamond Parking.

Passengers on the flight were traveling for many different reasons. There were plenty of families traveling with brand-new babies, complete with strollers, diaper bags and all manner of snacks and tablets to keep the older kids occupied during the flight.

Other folks were traveling back from jobs in remote parts of the state. Or, in my case, heading to a meeting. The couple sitting next to me had their ski gear, and they were headed to ski at Big Sky Resort in Montana.

After signing up for Alaska Access with Alaska Airlines, I wanted to try out my first monthly $5 internet pass.

Here’s what I learned: You cannot save up your monthly $5 passes. I tried to use the pass I received in March for travel in April. No luck. Further, your pass is valid for one flight and one flight only. If you’re connecting to another flight, you get to pay another fee to connect to in-flight internet.

Another promise of the Alaska Access plan is an advance notice of sale fares. I haven’t seen any notices yet.

On arrival in Seattle, we parked at the South Terminal, which is unusual for Alaska Airlines. The terminal is usually reserved for international flights. Next to us was a Turkish Air widebody, in addition to a few Delta flights bound for Europe.

There are no Alaska Air lounges in the South Terminal. But Priority Pass does have The Club lounge, which used to be the Delta Lounge. Because I carry the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card, I can use the Priority Pass network . In addition to the lounge at the S gates, there’s another lounge in the A concourse. The lounge features a bar, snacks, an espresso machine and plenty of seats by big windows that look over the runway.

Alaska Air has lounges at the D concourse by the TSA checkpoint, at the end of the C concourse and at the North Terminal.

To get from the S gates to my connecting flight, I had to take three trains: one to the main terminal, another to connect the North Terminal loop and, finally, a train to the C gates. Even though it was a double connection on the train, it only took about 10 minutes.

Alaska’s connecting flight was late, but the gate agent used the extra half-hour to pitch travelers to check their bulky carry-on bags.

Instead of paying another fee for internet access, I struck up a conversation with my seatmate, a young “code warrior” with Microsoft, currently working on new Xbox features.

When the drink cart came around, I convinced him to order the new Cloud Cruiser beer from Fremont Brewing in Seattle. He gave the beer a thumbs-up. Alaska Air worked on the IPA , which features a plane on the can.

[ Finding your ideal flight, whether your focus is on price, a relaxed itinerary or flexibility ]

Although I’m a frequent traveler, I learned several lessons on this trip:

1. Use your frequent flyer miles. Hyperinflation is rampant and your miles and points are worth more today than they will be tomorrow. For example, Alaska Airlines is offering a 75,000-mile bonus to get a new credit card. My one-way coach ticket from Anchorage to Burbank was 45,000 miles.

2. Check your email after making reservations. The airline may offer you compensation for changing since they oversell their flights. But be sure to check the available seating before you make the change.

3. You cannot stack your $5 monthly Wi-Fi passes from the Access Alaska program.

4. Don’t check bags unless you have to. On my last Alaska Air flight, the airline didn’t lose the bags. But the plane broke. The airline found a new plane, but the bags still were on the original aircraft. It was another 12 hours before I got my bag.

Want to bail on your eclipse trip? Here's what to know about your refund prospects.

If you planned a trip to see the eclipse next week and are realizing the weather forecast might not be in your favor, you may be considering canceling your excursion and saving that money for some other adventure down the road.

Unfortunately, depending on when and how you booked, you may not be eligible for a refund.

Airlines, hotels and other travel companies sometimes have restrictive cancellation policies that limit the refunds you’re entitled to. Here’s what you need to know before pulling the plug:

'Guaranteed to see the eclipse': A plane might be the best place to see the phenomenon

How do I cancel my hotel booking for my eclipse trip?

You can find cancellation and refund policy information on your itinerary in the app, according to Expedia Group. Travelers can contact an Expedia agent at any time through its online chat feature on the website’s Help Center .

◾ KAYAK: If you booked your hotel reservations through KAYAK, you can go to your bookings page for more information on 24/7 support. • ◾ Booking.com: Cancellation policies are property-specific, meaning you might not qualify for a complete refund or face a cancellation fee. Check your confirmation email for details on the cancellation policy associated with your booking. If your booking is nonrefundable, you won't be able to cancel or modify i t. Travelers can contact Booking.com’s customer service 24/7 by calling 1-888-850-3958 or logging into Booking.com and sending a message.

See the eclipse from the parks: You can see the total solar eclipse from national parks, but their skies offer much more

Can I cancel my Airbnb, Vrbo on my eclipse trip?

◾ Vrbo: Cancellation policies are set by the host, and refunds are issued according to the cancellation policy, according to Expedia Group, which owns Vrbo. If you would like to cancel or make changes to your booking outside of the cancellation policy, you should contact the host directly. Travelers can contact Vrbo’s customer service by calling 1-877-202-9331.

◾ Airbnb: Cancellation policies are set by the host and based on the local time zone of the listing. You can see your confirmed reservation’s cancellation policy under reservation details. Airbnb announced an update to its Major Disruptive Events Policy , which includes natural disasters and declared public health emergencies, but not a cloudy eclipse day. If you’ve purchased insurance for your reservation, you can get your full payment reimbursed if you cancel within 10 days of booking (unless you’ve already started your trip.) Travelers can contact Airbnb’s customer service by calling 1-844-234-2500 or messaging Airbnb support via its website .
