A young man depressed and unable to bear the anguish of poverty, sickness, unemployment, and failures in life, in an attempt to put an end to all his miseries, he walked towards the railway track to commit suicide. On the way, he met his uncle who shared about the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ for him. Those words served as a balm to his bruised heart. His uncle told him to go home and commit his ways to the Lord. He prayed and committed his life to the Saviour and returned home with new found hope on February 11, 1955. The joy of salvation filled his heart. This young man was none other than late Dr. D.G.S Dhinakaran.

After this incident, he started seeking Christ fervently, reading the scriptures, and waiting in the presence of God for many hours. He did this diligently for seven long years - pleading, "Lord! Hear my prayer and grant me your power! I don't want to live a dried-up Christian life anymore!" He wanted to have communion with God like the saints in the Bible had. On October 10, 1962, during a time of prayer with his family, a divine presence filled the room. He, indeed, saw Jesus Christ face to face, and he heard Him say, "I am Jesus. I have come to bless you". The Lord filled him with His Holy Spirit. He said, "Son, this world has only heard about my love and compassion. However, it has not seen it in a person's life. Today, I am filling you with the same spirit of compassion that I had when I was in this world two thousand years ago. Every time you are moved with this compassion, whatever you ask for my people, it shall be granted."

Dr. D.G.S. Dhinakaran was working in a bank, had a family, and also served people by praying for their needs and sharing the love of God. Though he started his mission on the streets for the broken-hearted and the needy, as more and more people began to throng to listen to him, he was taken to speak on public platforms to thousands. His mission to people was then named Jesus Calls.

His life was not a bed of roses. During his marriage, his wife miscarried, followed by the delivery of a stillborn child. Criticisms followed to break the spirit of Dhinakaran and his wife. Loneliness and forsakenness gripped them. It was followed by great financial troubles and sickness gripped his body. His lungs failed; his eyes were affected; he went through vertigo; his kidneys failed; his heart stopped for an hour and a half; his legs failed. His wife, himself and his 17 year old daughter, Angel, while going to the airport, traveling to preach the gospel, met with an accident in the road and his beloved daughter angel died instantaneously, falling right into his lap. Again, a barrage of criticism followed. The pressure of serving the and serving the people through the ministry carrying the whole financial load; the attacks from the ungodly people in the world wielding authority in the government, society, in spiritual circles terrorizing him to stop his mission. The personal challenges to keep up his spirit and his family in the midst of all these oppressions. But through these circumstances, he would have divine visitations from the Lord telling him that only by going through these sufferings and sorrowful experiences, would he be able to receive the people who suffer with those problems with great compassion and pray with zeal to the Lord claiming the victories Jesus had won through the cross for them through His own suffering on the cross.

Dr. D.G.S. Dhinakaran would weep whenever he preached, talking about the sufferings of people, as well as, the sufferings of Christ on the cross for them, which brought healing to millions of broken-hearted people, all through his mission of 53 years. Dhinakaran’s sermons and prayers reached the people through radio programs which he pioneered in India in 3 regional languages followed by television programs across the nation since 1985. He filmed his public Prayer Festivals in the 70s in 16mm and 35mm. He was gifted with an anointed voice to sing. His songs in different languages touched the hearts of millions and to find hope through the love of Christ, to this day. His popular books include The Gifts Of The Holy Spirit, Love So Amazing and An Insight Into Heaven. He was gifted supernaturally by God to have heavenly visitations and to know God’s will for people who write to him for important decisions in their life.

In 1986, he established a fully accredited engineering college in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, which now has 8,000 students from across India and some parts of the world, which has now grown to become Karunya (deemed) University. It was established in an area of 700 acres offering programs in agriculture, engineering and technology, media, management, arts, sciences and humanities.

This man of God, who obeyed the Lord and stood faithful in all the missions given to him by God entered glory on February 20th, 2008. Nearly a million people came to pay homage and thank God for the man who stood in the gap to intercede for them.

Baltimore bridge collapse: Biden promises to visit Maryland city - as rescue mission becomes a recovery operation

The US president said he has asked his team to "move heaven and earth" to "rebuild the bridge as soon as humanly possible" after the 1.6-mile long structure collapsed on Tuesday.

President Biden has promised that he will visit Baltimore "as soon as possible" after a major bridge collapsed - as officials say the rescue mission for the six missing people has now become a recovery operation.

The 1.6-mile long Francis Scott Key Bridge crashed into the Patapsco River after it was hit by a 289m-long cargo ship at 1.30am local time (5.30am UK time) on Tuesday.

"People of Baltimore, we're with you," the US president said this evening, as he added the search and rescue operation was a "top priority".

The six people missing were earlier reported to be construction workers who were on the bridge fixing potholes.

The search has now been suspended for the night and will resume at first light, but US Coast Guard and Maryland State Police officials have said that based on the frigid temperature of the water and the length of time that had elapsed since the bridge came down there was little if any chance that the six could be found alive.

Eight people were initially unaccounted for, with two of them having been rescued from the water.

One of them is described as being in a "very serious condition" in hospital while the other was not injured.

Meanwhile, the US president said the federal government will cover the "full cost" of rebuilding the bridge. He said it may emerge a private company was responsible for the disaster, but his government is "not going to wait" to begin the rebuilding process.

Mr Biden told reporters at the White House: "It's my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge and I expect Congress to support my effort."

The US president continued: "Everything so far indicates that this was a terrible accident. At this time we have no other indication, no other reason to believe there's any intentional act here.

" Personnel on board the ship were able to alert the Maryland Department of Transportation that they had lost control of their vessel."

Mr Biden added that this meant local authorities were able to close the bridge before it was struck which "undoubtedly saved lives".

He continued: "Our prayers are with everyone involved in this terrible accident and all the families [affected], especially those waiting for news of their loved one right now. I know every minute in that circumstance feels like a lifetime."

The US president also said authorities will be working to get the port open again as soon as possible.

The Port of Baltimore, which is accessed or departed by going underneath the bridge, is one of the US' largest shipping hubs.

Mr Biden said 15,000 jobs depend on the port.

"We're going to do everything we can to protect those jobs," he added.

He continued: "I've directed my team to move heaven and earth to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge as soon as humanly possible ."

Baltimore fire department's communications chief Kevin Cartwright has said there were multiple vehicles on the bridge when it was struck by the ship, one of which was the size of a tractor trailer.

CCTV and marine tracking data shows the ship , known as the Dali, lost power, adjusted its course and started smoking about 60 seconds before it hit the bridge.

According to the timings on the CCTV, the vessel hit the structure at 1.28:44am - with the bridge collapsing four seconds later.

All 22 crew members on board the ship, including the two pilots, have been accounted for and there were no reports of injuries.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said in a news conference that its investigators will not board the Dali on Tuesday.

The authority's chair Jennifer Homendy said the decision has been made to give "some time to the search and recovery effort".

"We did not want to interfere," she added.

Ms Homendy explained the NTSB will be able to provide more information in the "coming days", and voyager data recorder information will be "critical".

She said the NTSB will be leading the investigation and the Coast Guard will support it.

The same ship was previously involved in a minor incident when it hit a quay at the Port of Antwerp in Belgium in 2016, according to Vessel Finder and maritime accident site Shipwrecklog.

The vessel was reportedly damaged in the incident, but there were no injuries or pollution issues reported.

Meanwhile, Mayor of Baltimore, Brandon Scott has declared a local state of emergency which will be in place for the next 30 days as the search for the missing continues.

The NTSB is also conducting an investigation into the incident.

The Singapore-flagged ship was headed to Colombo in Sri Lanka at the time of the collision.

It was chartered by Danish shipping company Maersk, which said it was "horrified by what has happened". It said its thoughts were with everyone affected.

The Port of Baltimore is the 11th largest in the US, meaning its closure will cause knock-on effects for the industry.

Built in 1977, the Francis Scott Key Bridge is one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world, according to the National Steel Bridge Alliance.

It was named after the writer of The Star-Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the US, which was penned after a War of 1812 US-UK battle in Baltimore harbour.

Biden says Baltimore bridge rebuild should be paid for by the federal government after collapse

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden said he wants the federal government to pay to rebuild the Baltimore bridge that collapsed early Tuesday after a large cargo ship sailed straight into one of the bridge's support pillars.

"We’re going to work with our partners in Congress to make sure the state gets the support it needs. It’s my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort," Biden said in brief remarks from the White House before he left for North Carolina.

Biden said that it will take "some time" to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which transverses the Patapsco River, but that he told Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, that he's directing the federal government to "move heaven and earth" to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge "as soon as humanly possible."

He said he also plans to visit Baltimore as "quickly" as he can.

"Our prayers are with everyone involved in this terrible accident and all the families — especially those waiting for the news of their loved one right now," Biden said. "I know every minute in that circumstance feels like a lifetime. You just don’t know. It’s just terrible."

Biden said that a search and rescue operation is the top priority and that ship traffic and the Port of Baltimore have been suspended until further notice.

The Port of Baltimore, one of the largest shipping hubs in the U.S., is the top port in America for both imports and exports of automobiles and light trucks, Biden said, noting that 850,000 vehicles are moved through the port annually.

"We’re going to get it up and running again as soon as possible. ... Fifteen thousand jobs depend on that port, and we’re going to do everything we can to protect those jobs and help those workers," he said.

He also said that the bridge is "critical for travel," not just for Baltimore but for the Northeast Corridor, saying more than 30,000 vehicles cross it daily. 

Several vehicles plunged into the water when the collision occurred at 1:30 a.m. ET. At least six people were still believed to be missing, Moore said at a news conference. Sonar used by rescue crews also detected at least five vehicles in the water, he said: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle.

Moore said the ship, the Dali, which had just left the Port of Baltimore en route to Sri Lanka, notified authorities about a "power issue" on board and issued a mayday moments before the crash. Moore credited that call with saving people's lives.
