Background Information

Initially announced January 24, 2020, the fan club gift from U2.com is a full length video release of U2’s final performance on the Experience and Innocence tour. The gift was made available both in a DVD format and as an online 4K stream via U2.Com for the length of a subscription. The DVD was already in production when the announcement was made, and had already been submitted for ratings.

The video is the full concert, running two hours and 20 minutes, and the description on the website says it covers “from the unforgettable opening burst of ‘The Blackout’ and ‘Lights of Home’.” The previously aired television special from this Berlin footage ran 75 minutes and cut out the first act of the concert. The fan club release contains the entire show.

The DVD is accompanied by a booklet of exclusive photos by tour photographer Ross Stewart and produced by the band’s long time graphic designer Shaughn McGrath, with creative direction by Gavin Friday. The DVD began arriving with subscribers on June 13, 2020.

A further announcement on March 1, 2020 confirmed that the video would also be available for streaming in a high definition format, “For those who can support it, streaming in stunning 4K UHD and 5.1 surround sound.” The streaming version was made available on March 14, 2020, with a special watch party being hosted by the moderators of the Zootopia forums. After the premiere, the video was available on demand, with the site stating “Once we’ve aired the premiere, ‘U2 eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE – LIVE IN BERLIN’ will be available on demand for the duration of your annual subscription.” The link to stream the video is available below in our catalog section if you are a subscriber for the 2020 year.

Although U2.Communication contained some video content on the CD-Rom as part of the gift, this is the first time that the band has issued a full length DVD as a fan club gift. No choice was given for a higher resolution disc, and the streaming 4K version of the film appears to be the fan club’s way to address this. A 75-minute high resolution 4K broadcast of the Berlin footage starting after the Intermission had previously been shown in 2019 on television. When asked about the possibility of a higher resolution disc release, the help section at U2.Com listed the following answer, “This film is released for U2.com subscribers and will not be available to buy on blu-ray.” Sources at Universal Music Group had originally suggested a commercial version may happen in the future, but we are told at this point that there will be no physical release of this video in 2020 other than via the fan club.

Due to the lateness announcing the new gift, subscriptions ending before the end of February 2020 were extended so that they now expire on February 29, 2020, to give the fan club additional time to announce this release.

Please note that although some subscribers have started to receive the disc, it usually takes about six months for all subscribers to receive their gifts once shipment has started. At this time it may take even longer, as the current virus affecting the world has resulted in slower than normal mail service between countries.

U2 eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour 2018

'love is all we have left'.

When & Where Wednesday May 23rd 2018. Show 11 of U2eiTour  and second night at the United Centre which opened in 1994, Chicago. U2 first played here in 2001 and tonight they played here for the 19th time - more shows than any other artist.

Set List Red Flag Day returns to the set after missing three shows, to the delight of many, including superman @theeeEdge on Twitter : It's baaaacckkkkkk, where have you been!!?? #BabyItsARedFlagDay !!

Social Posts  @MalissaShriver  Wisdom is the recovery of innocence at the far end of experience

@AshleyJudd Yes, #iwillfollow my band of 31 years. For spiritual nourishment, to fire up my convictions, to connect with social justice, to rock out, to dance, and per chance to pray. #povertyissexist

@robtask U2 Night 2 in Chicago. Best show of the 2018 eiTour!

Fansite Coverage  U2gigs.com on night 2 in Chicago  :  Today, U2 performed their second of two concerts in Chicago. It is worth noting that these two gigs have taken place almost 35 years to the day since U2 visited Chicago on the War Tour for a show on 21 May 1983 and saw the exhibition that inspired The Unforgettable Fire. Reports from today's soundcheck indicate that the band worked on Red Flag Day, The Ocean, Raised By Wolves, and Until the End of the World. The soundcheck proved an accurate indication that Red Flag Day would be played. It had been omitted from the past three shows, and slotted into the setlist position occupied last night by Gloria. This is Red Flag Day's fourth live performance to date, and the first time it  has been performed without Gloria in the setlist—the three previous times it has been played, Gloria has also been in the setlist. Raised By Wolves, however, did not make it out of soundcheck. U2 continued with the extended Sunday Bloody Sunday outro leading into Until the End of the World, and tonight Bono recited William Blake's poem Introduction over the start of the song, in the spot where he usually shouts the "comfort me!" ending of the Psalm 23 snippet.  Bono, in his Macphisto persona, slipped a little Frank Sinatra into his sinister intro to Acrobat tonight. Macphisto, with a cackle, told the locals that "I will always be with you, Chicago—you are my kind of town". At the end of the show, as he wrapped up 13, Bono made an allusion to Walk On, dropping in a mention of "home, that's where the hurt is".

Experience Of The Day Mr.AdamClayton (via Instagram) Yesterday we were able to tell Sebastian the story of #teamadam and gave him shirts for Adam’s wife and daughter which he handed to Adam in his car before they drove into the venue. During the show I managed to direct Adam’s attention to the Team Adam sticker we put on the rail and he recognized it! He gave a sweet little nod and a big ole smile. Our amazing friends got the whole thing on video and I’m so thankful for how this all played out.

What did Bono Say? “Welcome to experience & innocence… this is the chapter on our very birth …you know…the sensation of whirling and loss of balance… meaning : this is the moment where it all went to our head… actually… MY head! Maybe Adam’s head.., Larry & Edge are fine!" (before Desire)

“Ashley Judd right in front of you” who is in the audience. “On her way to the Congo… we send her off with love… keep safe”.

Shoutouts to the One Team, Gayle Smith & Bobby Shriver, also in the house

"I've been 11 for most of my life, but after some serious work of a spiritual nature I'm now 13” (intro to 13)

If You Had To Pick One Song @ReginaIBCLC (Via Twitter) ‘From the first time I heard it, I knew #AmericanSoul would rock the @U2 house, and it did. Loved it! Last night was awesome’

Review On U2.com  lipo65 : ‘I finally figured it out ! Songs of experience isn't just a concert or collection of songs, it's your most relevant manifesto yet’

@RED (via twitter) Thank you so much @UnitedCenter employees for helping to support @RED and the fight to #endAIDS in honor of @U2 last night.

U2's Experience + Innocence Tour Is Not Meant Just to Entertain–It's Meant to Explain

The Irish rockers dig deep into the catalog for compelling results.

Performance, Entertainment, Music, Musician, Concert, Performing arts, String instrument, Guitarist, Music artist, Guitar,

"We're from a small island, but we've got a big band!" the white-haired Irishman, draped in a leather vest and black jeans, in the row behind me proclaims as he asks for a hand in getting a picture of he and his friends. They are speaking—shouting, actually—about U2, who is, at the moment, relishing in the rapture of a 15,000-person-strong Monday night crowd at Madison Square Garden. It is the first of their three planned Experience + Innocence shows at the venue, arriving near the tail end of their North American run of this tour.

The Irishman and his friends are seated amongst a crowd that brims with guys out for guys' night, grizzled rockers reliving their glory days, dads with their youngsters, and edgy teens looking to thrash. There are couples on dates, cool aunts, young models, several really famous people—Lady Gaga and Seal each appeared in the crowd on Monday night—and lots of really rich people. Somehow, be it the lines at the merch tables or the thunderous cheers that welcome each song on the deep cut-leaning setlist, it seems like all of them have been waiting years to see this show.

The Experience + Innocence Tour finds the rock stalwarts continuing the journey they began on the Innocence + Experience tour, which took its final bow three years ago. The same transfixing rig, which splits the venue down the middle with an enormous screen stretching between two stages, is making the rounds (though this outing sees it updated with new bells and whistles), and the setlist still finds gravity in the handful of songs that recall the death of Bono's mother and the band's turbulent youths, growing up in a violent Dublin. (On Monday they played "Iris (Hold Me Close)," "Cedarwood Road," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," and "Until the End of the World.")

(And raking in cash?)

Experience , as it were, had to be re-worked. And as the 30th anniversary of the group's seminal Joshua Tree LP arrived, it had to be celebrated. U2 embarked on a massive stadium tour that revisited the set, snaking through North and South America—where they headlined their first U.S. festival, at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee—as well as Europe. They played all the hits and, as stadium after stadium sold out, you'd have to think they also realized a new paradigm that could define the rest of their career: nostalgia. Why shouldn't the rock gods spend the rest of their days looking back? (And raking in cash?)

As has become increasingly obvious on this 2018 jaunt, it's because they don't want to.

The Experience + Innocence tour is an elaborate and difficult production, for the band as well as the audience. There are lights! Suspended stages! Second stages! Augmented reality! And, significantly fewer hits. Audiences have not heard signature cuts like "Where The Streets Have No Name" or "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" in 2018. (Though they have been treated to some crate digging: " Acrobat ," off 1991's Achtung Baby , which appears nightly now, had never been done live before this tour; " Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses ," also off Achtung , got dusted off after more than a decade during the tour-opener.) This is not a show meant just to entertain, it's meant to explain—where the men came from and what remains of their hopes for these divisive times. (Answer? Change. A lot of it.)

Earlier this month, U2 played a private show at the fabled Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York to a crowd of just 1,400 people. It was their smallest show in who knows how long, and one that came with little stage production; an LED light was nary insight. They treated fans to songs that weren't currently being done on tour: " Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of ," which they dedicated to Anthony Bourdain landed with extra emotional heft, as did the 1988 Billie Holiday tribute "Angel of Harlem." When he wasn't spraying them down with water bottles, Bono shook seemingly all the hands that were within reach of his stage.

The two events couldn't be more different, except for the singular, palpable energy that binds them: U2 is glad to be here. They're not ready to become your favorite legacy act. They still think they can save the world. Go join them for a sing-along of "Pride (In the Name of Love)," which they perform with each of the four members at the opposing corners of the arena while images of Martin Luther King, Jr. play alongside footage from the hate-filled rallies in Charlottesville—you'll be hard pressed to deny them.

The Experience + Innocence tour continues Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. All remaining dates can be found on the band's website .

U2

U2 ‘s Experience + Innocence tour wrapped in Berlin earlier this week, and with a final tally of $126,188,794 and 927,034 tickets sold, the Irish band is on track to finish with one of the highest-grossing tours of 2018, according to Pollstar.

The tour — which featured 59 performances in 30 arenas — supported the band’s recent release, “Songs of Experience” (2017). The tour completed a three-year touring cycle that began in 2015 with the Innocence + Experience tour, corresponding with the release of 2014’s “Songs of Innocence” album and 2016’s “Joshua Tree” 30th Anniversary tour. According to Pollstar, all three tours took in a grand total of $594 million from 4.9 million total tickets.

Before returning to Berlin for a make-up show after lead singer Bono lost his voice in September, the band played a four-night victory stretch at Dublin’s 3Arena. Those concerts grossed $6.4 million from 46,529 sold seats on Nov. 5-6, 9-10, topping its previous 2015 tally of $1.2 million for the same amount of show, Pollstar reports.

As impressive as that is, it paled in comparison to the band’s appearance in France at the AccorHotels Arena in Paris. The group performed for 72,412 fans over a four-night engagement that produced $9.4 million in revenue. The only other city that hosted the band for four nights was Milan, and the shows at the Mediolanum Forum on Oct. 11-12, 15-16 were successful as well, producing $7 million with 50,661 tickets sold.

Popular on Variety

In North America, U2 was welcomed with open arms at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The band’s summer concerts on June 25-26 and July 1 earned $8.7 million, with 55,575 tickets sold.

Bono finished the tour in Berlin telling the audience that they are going to “go away” for a little while, but Bono isn’t exactly going to fade into retirement. The singer is set to appear Monday night on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” for the show’s fourth annual (RED) benefit episode.

U2 eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour 2018

Back in spain.

When & Where First night of two at Wizink Center, Madrid, Spain, Thursday, September 20th, 2018.

Set List "De Madrid, de Madrid, de Madrid al Cielo!" (from Madrid to the Heaven) was the call from the outset as Red Flag Day returns to the set for Spain. Setlist geeks @U2gigs provide some landmark song facts from tonight's show.

- One was performed for the 777th time - it is now on equal count with Bullet the Blue Sky; - Until the End of the World overtook Mysterious Ways on play count to become the second-most played song from Achtung Baby; - Even Better Than the Real Thing now has more recorded performances than Out of Control; one more and it will equal October

Here's the setlist from the night one in Madrid

In The Press  Fernando Neira for El Pais   (translation via google translate) '… 58 springs for our gentleman from the north of Dublin, but the attitude he exhibited last night for 134 minutes at the WiZink Center in Madrid was that of a fiery, spasmodic and theatrical young man who had just left his first rehearsals in the garage. With the subtle difference, of course, that this genuine scenic animal knows all of them and has the support of three extraordinary instrumentalists so that nothing is lost. Recover the innocent spirit from the lessons of experience: there was the crux of the matter, the moral that contained the two last albums of the band. 38 years after publishing their first songs, U2 not only continue to be able to burst pavilions or stadiums, but to suggest excitement, adrenaline, technological glare, controversy ... what 15,000 souls lived last night, in the first Madrid visit of the quartet since 2005, was a pulsating, overwhelming, superlative show. A perpetual jolt in which the musicians disappear and reappear, the central corridor is a fascinating box of audiovisual surprises and almost nothing runs under the parameters of predictability. Authors of some of the great sound emblems of the last half century, the Dubliners have changed the pace of this eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE tour with the most heterodox and disconcerting repertoire of its entire history. Those who did not go on notice, would be stupefied yesterday to check that there was no trace of the first three songs of The Joshua Tree, for example, which alone ensure posterity and a generous inheritance to several generations….'

@ijgarciagimeno 'As Bono, the lead singer of U2, said, “Europe is a thought that needs to become a feeling”. @U2 has achieved it today at their concert in (Madrid).'

What Did Bono Say? 'You know what you gotta do here… UNO. DOS, TRES, CATORZE!'

'…then some perfectly sensible person from Cedarwood Road like your big brother (Norman Hewson in the house tonight) taps you on the shoulder and says, 'Hey!. You! You're no rock 'n roll star, you jumped-up little shit - you're my little brother - Paul!'

'Don Macphisto a su servicio. So Bo-no goes to Rome-o to see il-Pope-o… to kneel before him, I assume. I didn't kneel when I lived in that place… thats when the Borgia's were my very best friends, Rodrigo, Cesare, Lucrizia such fun… but Macphisto is bored with that now… he's got new pals…  anyway Macphisto's got a new game… it's called Zooropa, a game he intends to win. Vote Macphisto or to hell with you!'
