The mission of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, under the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, is to: (1) optimize UCI’s undergraduate enrollments by implementing Academic Senate, universitywide, and campus policies for the selection and admission of new freshman and transfer students; and (2) stimulate and advance cooperative educational relationships between UCI and California schools and colleges. Undergraduate Admissions works to improve the preparation of prospective students for higher education and to promote their access to and success at UCI.

Undergraduate Admissions

Staff are involved in monitoring applications and admission targets; collecting and evaluating personal and academic data to select and admit new undergraduate students; establishing students’ permanent UCI academic record; and evaluating coursework taken at other colleges and universities by new and matriculated students for transfer credit.

Intersegmental Relations

Staff are involved as liaison with regard to curricular articulation between UCI and California Community Colleges as well as various educational organizations designed to facilitate regional cooperation (South Coast Higher Education Council, Southern California Intersegmental Articulation Council).

School and College Relations

Staff: (1) advise prospective students, their parents, teachers, counselors, and school administrators regarding academic programs, admission requirements, and admission selection, and assist them with UC application and enrollment processes; (2) increase public awareness by making presentations to schools, colleges, and the community regarding UCI and the University of California, and by creating publications and communications which explain admissions policies and procedures, academic options, housing, financial aid, and student life opportunities; (3) provide general information on UC admissions and programs for all UC campuses; (4) explain University Admissions policies and procedures specific to undergraduate enrollment to the public; (5) assist prospective transfer students and community college faculty and staff; and (6) participate in activities and projects designed to enhance the academic success of students.

On-Campus Services

Staff: (1) host programs for prospective students and educational groups; (2) offer activities for applicants; (3) inform UC and UCI administrators and faculty of developments in California schools and community colleges; and (4) provide consultative services to campus departments wishing to provide programs for schools and colleges or special recruitment for specific majors or programs.

Transfer Student Services

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions provides advice and guidance to prospective UCI transfer students. Staff regularly visit California Community Colleges throughout the state and meet with prospective transfer students to discuss admission requirements, academic planning and preparation, and UCI lower-division major and general education requirements. Articulation agreements, which identify how community college courses may be used to fulfill lower-division UCI degree requirements, are facilitated through the Undergraduate Admissions office. Articulation agreements are available at the ASSIST website .

Campus Tours

Our student Campus Representatives lead tours that depart promptly at noon from The Hill (210-B), our campus bookstore, in the UCI Student Center. To confirm tour dates, times, and parking instructions and to arrange tours for school groups of 10 or more during the regular academic year, visit the Campus Tours website .

UCI is Ranked Among Nation’s Top 10 Public Universities for Ninth Year in a Row

Campus also rates highly for social mobility of its graduating students

Sept. 18, 2023  — The University of California, Irvine has been ranked  10th among the nation’s public universities  – and 33rd overall – on U.S. News & World Report’s 2023-24 list of “Best Colleges,” released today. This is the ninth consecutive year in which UCI has placed in the top 10.

In addition, UCI ranked No. 12 overall in the subcategory of social mobility, which rates the institutions that enroll and graduate large proportions of students awarded federal Pell Grants – given to undergraduates who display exceptional financial need. Currently, 38 percent of UCI’s undergraduates receive  Pell Grants , and the campus is among the best in the nation for the graduation rate of its Pell Grant recipients. In 2023, 3,636 earned bachelor’s degrees.

The latest edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges” rankings – now in their 39th year – assesses the country’s bachelor’s degree-granting institutions on more than a dozen measures of academic quality.

“U.S. News & World Report has reaffirmed UCI’s overall excellence by ranking us among the nation’s top 10 public universities,” said Chancellor Howard Gillman. “This accolade reflects the unwavering commitment and excellence of our distinguished faculty, outstanding staff and talented students.”

U.S. News & World Report also evaluated certain undergraduate programs. Overall, UCI came in:

• seventh for game/simulation development
• ninth for software engineering
• 20th in psychology
• 27th for computer science
• 29th for business
• 37th for engineering
• 41st in economics
• 52nd for nursing
• 62nd for undergraduate teaching programs

Available online at  www.usnews.com/best-colleges , these results come on the heels of UCI being ranked ninth in the nation among public universities for  best value in the Princeton Review college survey . The ratings service cited UCI’s stellar academics, affordability through comparatively lower tuition costs and generous financial aid, and strong career prospects for graduates. On Sept. 7, The New York Times ranked UCI No. 16 on its College-Access Index, a list of the country’s 286 most selective universities placed in order of economic diversity. UCI was rated first among public universities in California and tied for No. 1 among members of the prestigious Association of American Universities.

And earlier this year, for its 2023-24 Best Colleges in America list, Money again  ranked UCI at the top . It was one of 34 U.S. universities to receive a five-star rating (the highest possible), and Money lauded the campus for offering a high-quality education, for its affordability and for its student outcomes.

How to get into UCI

College Application Advice: Any advice I can offer you for the college application process, and specifically how you can increase your chances of getting accepted to UCI? I recommend getting into UCI via a less impacted major and then switching to your preferred major once you get in. I'll explain more on how that works in this video.

I want to get into UC I. There's a couple of things to consider. Most importantly, really, what determines your admissions, not only with your G P a n your grades you got in school. That attests, Tio, What they can see of your character Us Really? What they see extracurriculars are important. If you're good at building things, make something, make a make a shadow or make a device and really display it on a Web site. You know, if you want to make personal website, that's great. Because it expands what the college admissions people know about you. Um I want to make you where that because your major really is what determines whether you I have an easier time getting into UC I or not. Sometimes it may be easier just to choose a less critical major one that's has higher acceptances to get into. Once you get into you see, I, um then he concession to the major. You want this? I wouldn't call it cheating, but if you really want to get into the school. Um, this is a way to do it, because if you apply it to computer science that you see, I you might have a harder time than if you fly for electrical engineering, then switched to computers times once you're in. You see, I Now, if you're a transfer student, be aware that you cannot transfer to the You see, I, um information and computer science to school starting in twenty twenty because they're opting out of the tag program specifically for the computer science program here at U. C. I, um So, you know, if your transfer student, you will have to deal with that if you want to do computer science. Really be aware that you can change your major, change your major when applying and then switch it to the major you want.

ICS and Engineering Schools Induct Six into 2023 Hall of Fame

The weather cleared in time to reveal a beautiful blue sky on the evening of May 5, when nearly 200 UC Irvine engineering and information and computer sciences (ICS) alumni, faculty and friends gathered at the Inn at Mission San Juan Capistrano to celebrate six alumni for the 2023  Hall of Fame .

Three people from each school were inducted this year. The alumni were selected for making a significant impact on their profession or bringing distinction to their alma mater. Sixty-one engineering alumni and 49 ICS alumni have now been named Hall of Famers since it was established in 2015 to coincide with UCI’s 50th anniversary.

The event began with a cocktail and networking reception on the Inn’s courtyard, followed by a buffet dinner, an enthusiastic welcome from ICS alumnus Tim Kashani ’86, who served as master of ceremony, and then presentations from both deans, Magnus Egerstedt, engineering, and Marios Papaefthymiou, ICS.

Egerstedt shared information on the Samueli School’s refreshed strategic plan, and how research shows that students who have cohort experiences do better in school, are more likely to finish their degree and have more fun. “This is where I need your help. We’re planning to build a kickass 21 st  century makerspace for our students to participate in these types of hands-on experiences, so if you’d like to contribute with a gift, we’d very much appreciate your support.”

Papaefthymiou also asked for support, sharing that the footprint of ICS has expanded over the past few years. “You would be hard pressed to not find an area of campus where ICS does not have a joint project, we have many on the sciences side of campus but also on the north side with social sciences, school of education and so forth. ICS has been growing.”

Both deans emphasized that the educational journey or student experience was a priority. “Our No. 1 product we are most proud of is you, our alumni,” noted Egerstedt, “which is why we are here tonight, to honor some amazing alumni.”

Egerstedt and Papaefthymiou each inducted their new Hall of Fame members.

ICS Inductees Nenad Medvidović, Ph.D. 1999, M.S. 1995 – Information and Computer Science Medvidović  is a global leader in software engineering and chair of the USC Department of Computer Science. He served a five-year term as editor-in-chief of his field’s leading journal,  IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering . He chaired the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on Software Engineering and the steering committees for two premier conferences: the International Conference on Software Engineering and the Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering. Medvidović has been the recipient of the NSF CAREER Award, the Okawa Foundation Research Grant, the IBM Real-Time Innovation Award, the USC Mellon Mentoring Award, the OCEC Distinguished Engineering Merit Award, and the ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Service Award. Medvidović is an ACM Distinguished Scientist and an IEEE Fellow.

Fritz Onion, M.S. 1993 – Computer Science Onion  is a Maine-based philanthropist and angel investor with a focus on the environment, green technology and the arts. After earning a bachelor’s degree at Harvard University, Onion came to UCI and studied parallelizing compiler technology with Distinguished Professor of Computer Science Alexandru Nicolau. He then pursued a career in software consulting and teaching with DevelopMentor, a startup co-founded by fellow alumnus Don Box ’91, (M.S.). In 2004, Onion co-founded the classroom-based technology training business  Pluralsight , which by 2013, had transitioned into a high-growth online subscription-based company training software developers and IT professionals worldwide. The company went public in 2018, and was purchased and taken private again in 2021 by Vista Equity Partners. Onion and his wife, Susan, created the Onion Foundation as a grant-making organization that connects people in Maine with meaningful experiences in the arts and the natural environment. They then helped launch Pluralsight One as a philanthropic arm of the company with a mission of increasing access to technology skill development and promoting diversity in the technology workforce around the world.

Leysia Palen, Ph.D. 1998, M.S. 1995 – Information and Computer Science Palen  is a crisis informatics pioneer and the founding chair of the University of Colorado Boulder’s Department of Information Science. She brings her training in human-computer interaction (HCI), computer-supported cooperative work and social computing to bear on understanding and advancing socio-technical issues of societal import. In the advancing arena of large-scale online interaction (the big data of crisis response), she adapts quantitative techniques that then allow the application of qualitative methods and an ethnographic eye to closely observe and describe social structures in technology-mediated situations. She was recognized for this work by the Association for Computing Machinery with the 2015 Computer Human Interaction Social Impact Award. In 2016, she was elected to the ACM CHI Academy, an honorary group of individuals who have made substantial contributions to the field of human-computer interaction.

Engineering Inductees Carlos F. M. Coimbra, Ph.D. 1998 – Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Coimbra  is a global expert on thermal engineering and chair of the UC San Diego Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Coimbra credits much of his career success to the graduate experience he had at UCI, where he was advised by Roger Rangel and mentored by the late Don Edwards. His research interests cover a wide range of topics related to energy and climate, planetary-scale heat transfer, solar forecasting, atmospheric radiation, multiphase flows and variable order methods. He is the editor-in-chief of the  Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy , which is published by the American Institute of Physics. He is also a life member of the American Geophysical Union and a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Manu Gulati, M.S. 1995 – Electrical Engineering After earning his master’s degree under the advisement of UCI Professor Nader Bagherzadeh,  Gulati  began his career as a chip designer at a small startup in Santa Clara. He went on to serve lead roles at Broadcom, Apple and Google before starting his own company. As lead SOC architect at Apple, he spent nearly eight years directing the architecture of chips that powered iPhones and iPads, making his work there the one with impact to the largest number of end-users. After Google, he and two of his Apple colleagues started Nuvia, a company focused on high performance CPUs and chips for datacenters in 2019. Nuvia exited with a sale to Qualcomm two years later for $1.6 billion. Since then, Gulati has been vice president of engineering at Qualcomm, where the focus of his team is to change the CPU landscape of the industry.

Wendy Robello, B.S. 2004 – Mechanical Engineering Robello  has over 18 years of systems engineering and strategy experience in the aerospace and defense industry, supporting systems across space, air, ground and underwater domains. She is currently national director of systems engineering for Northrop Grumman aeronautics systems, where she leads the long-term strategic planning in training, processes and tools to ensure systems engineering rigor across the sector. Prior to Northrop Grumman, she held program management and systems engineering positions at General Atomics – Aeronautical Systems, Inc.; Boeing Phantom Works; and Boeing Defense Systems. Robello is also an active mentor, participating in numerous diversity and inclusion support groups at Northrop Grumman, and she serves as an executive advocate for the LatinX/Hispanic Employee Advocacy Program. She is an executive board member for the Global Women in STEM Leadership Summit and founder of the Robello California Alliance for Minority Participation Scholarship. After earning her bachelor’s degree at UCI, Robello went on to complete a master’s degree in systems architecture and engineering from USC and a doctorate in systems engineering and engineering management from The George Washington University.
