MTA Expands Program Using UV Light to Kill COVID-19 on NYC Subway Cars

Ultraviolet UV testing in nyc subway

In mid May, the MTA began a pilot to use ultraviolet disinfecting technology to eradicate COVID-19 on New York City subways, the first of its kind on mass transit globally. Deemed a success, this past Friday, the MTA expanded the UV program at the MTA’s maintenance shops at Corona, Coney Island, Jamaica, and Pelham, and will clean more than 6,500 train cars in the MTA’s fleet using full spectrum Ultraviolet (including germicidal UV-C, UV-B and anti-bacterial UV-A).

Ultraviolet light is proven to be an effective technology for eliminating viruses, and has been previously used to combat the SARS virus. To help prove that the technique would be successful in eliminating COVID-19, the MTA requested the help of Dr. David Brenner, Director of the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University . Working under proper biosafety guidelines, Dr. Brenner has been testing the efficiency of miniaturized UV lamps to kill COVID-19. Last month, he reported the first-ever demonstrated test of ultraviolet light that efficiently killed the virus on a New York City subway car.

The pilot used about 150 dual-headed mobile devices from Denver-based company   PURO Lighting to “test and evaluate the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of UVC technology in a number of settings,” said the MTA in March. Now, with the success of the first pilot, the program will expand to clean full train sets. Senior Vice President for Subways at New York City Transit, Sally Librera said, “We continue to move full speed ahead with our efforts to explore any and every idea that might help keep our system safe during these challenging times. Ultraviolet technology is one of many outside-the-box ideas we’re pursuing to disinfect the system. I look forward to continuing to expand this pilot and learning more about how ultraviolet technology can best help us moving forward.”

This pilot is one of many steps the MTA has taken in its disinfecting effort to keep employees and customers safe. Back in March, the MTA announced its updated sanitation strategies , to clean frequently used surfaces across all its services, including the subway, bus, Access-A-Ride, Long Island Railroad and Metro North. The effort continued on May 6, when the MTA started its historic closing of subway system from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. to allow for train cars and stations to be disinfected every 24 hours

The MTA also launched an industry-leading “Temperature Brigade” on March 24, taking employee temperatures at work locations, implementing rear-door boarding on buses and eliminating cash transactions at stations and on commuter rails to prevent person-to-person contact to ensure the safety of operating employees. The agency has also distributed 3 million masks, 5.4 million pairs of gloves, 3.1 million sanitizing wipes, 36,000 gallons of hand sanitizer, 125,000 hand sanitizer bottles, and 8,000 face shields to its heroic frontline workers. Most recently, the MTA released hundreds of thousands of adorable animal footprint decals to remind passengers to social distance on train platforms and in stations.

The ultraviolet pilot is a innovative, bold step in the efforts by the MTA to fight COVID-19. As the city begins to re-open, people who have not taken the subway since March have returned. Untapped New York’s subway tour guide Christa Avampato, who took her first ride on Monday says that the subways are “ so clean I can see my reflection in the surfaces. And that famous subway smell? Gone.”

Coronavirus News: MTA using ultraviolet technology on NYC subways to kill COVID-19

WABC logo

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- The MTA is testing an ultraviolet technology that is proven to kill COVID-19.

"It has been known for 100 years that UV light is incredibly efficient in killing bacteria," said Dr. David Brenner at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. "The UV light that's going to be used in the overnight subway cleaning is very efficient at killing the virus responsible for COVID-19."

Starting in subways, the MTA is testing 230 miniature portable UV lamps provided by PURO Lighting, a start-up. They cost $1 million, and if successful, the MTA would move to buses, then the Long Island Rail Road and Metro North.

"What we're doing here is reducing the virus in subways and buses," Brenner said.

The technology is the same that used in hospitals and in some police, fire and ambulances houses. The MTA is testing the best position for the lamps and whether they're more effective in the yard or at end-of-service stations.

"Dr. Brenner has shown that the use of UV light in a laboratory setting has eradicated the COVID-19 virus," MTA Chairman and CEO Pat Foye said. "The MTA is launching the first ever UV pilot proven to kill COVID-19. That's big news. This pilot will use UV technology to help disinfect our infrastructure."

The MTA is currently disinfecting 3,500 subway cars at least once daily, and some cars are cleaned as many as seven times daily at end-of-line stations.

"We are also experimenting with electrostatic sprayers and anti-microbials, which kill bacteria," NYC Transit interim President Sarah Feinberg said.

The pilot program uses UV-C light, which is less harmful than either UV-A or UV-B but still requires the subway cars to be empty.

"UV is a proven and effective technology and is 100% safe to humans after it is applied," Foye said.

MTA officials will monitor the result of the pilot in the hopes of expanding the UV-C use throughout the system.

NYC will use powerful ultraviolet lamps to kill the coronavirus on subways and buses

The mta wants to see if uvc rays can destroy the virus.

New York Exteriors And Landmarks - 2020

New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which is dealing with record-low ridership on subways and buses, is trying to shed some light on its coronavirus problem.

According to the New York Daily News , the agency will begin using powerful ultraviolet light as part of its beefed-up sanitization program on subways and buses. The effort is part of a partnership with Columbia University, which theorizes that UV light can be used to kill diseases on the transit system.

Starting May 11th, UV lamps will be placed inside subway cars and buses at two rail yards and bus depots. The lamps emit rays called “UVC,” a relatively obscure part of the spectrum that consists of a shorter, more energetic wavelength of light that can be harmful to humans if exposed directly.

The lamps emit rays called “UVC,” a relatively obscure part of the spectrum

UVC is particularly good at killing organic material — whether in humans or viral particles — but the jury is still out on whether it can be effective in destroying the novel coronavirus. UVC lamps and robots are commonly used to sanitize water, objects such as laboratory equipment, and spaces such as buses and airplanes. If the MTA results are good, transit officials said they will expand it to include more trains and buses.

“At this critical and unprecedented time, the MTA is exploring every solution scientists and the market have to offer in our effort to ensure the transportation system is safe for our customers and employees,” said Mark Dowd, MTA chief innovation officer, in a statement. “The pilot project involving this proven UV technology is another example of that as we look for alternative ways to effectively reduce risk on train cars and buses. We thank Columbia University for its partnership and are hopeful this new technology in transit provides a more effective and efficient option than our current disinfecting efforts.”

President Donald Trump infamously touted ultraviolet light and disinfectant as potential treatments for people who are sick with COVID-19, despite both being very harmful to humans. The president later claimed that he was being sarcastic.

Last week, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the extraordinary step of shutting down subway service from 1AM to 5AM every evening starting on May 6th for extensive disinfecting.

The MTA has reported a 90 percent drop in ridership since the start of the pandemic, with the agency curtailing some train and bus service to address the drop in demand. Many essential workers still count on transit to get to and from work every day. So far, over  80 MTA employees have died  from the virus.

A Moscow Free Walking Tour of the Iconic Red Square

Updated March 10th, 2020

This post might contain affiliate links. That means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, if you buy through my site. I appreciate your support of my site.

No visit to Moscow, Russia is complete unless you take a walk around the famous Red Square and see the iconic sights of the city. One of the best ways to see all the famous landmarks in Moscow and learn a little something about them too is on a free Moscow walking tour through the Red Square.

Continue reading for a sneak peek at what you will see on your free tour in Moscow and for tips on both the tour and visiting the sights. Make sure to save some time during your trip to go inside of the magnificent buildings because you will not be going in the buildings during the tour.

The State Historical Museum

Moscow State Historical Museum

The Moscow free walking tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum . You can’t miss this massive red building. The museum’s interior is almost as spectacular as the artifacts you can see within. Read my post dedicated to the museum here to find out more on what you can see and tips for visiting. Admission is free with the Moscow City Pass .

The Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin

Behind the walls of the Kremlin lie the working offices of Russian’s government and president. When visiting the Kremlin you can see the Armory Chamber, Cathedral Square, the Patriach’s Palace and many more cathedrals. You definitely want to buy tickets ahead of time so you avoid the long-lines. You can get free admission with the Moscow City Pass . It’s also worth it to take a guided tour if you don’t speak Russian so you have more of an understanding of what you are seeing.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

Moscow's St. Basil's Cathedral

If asked to conquer up an image of Moscow, St. Basil’s Cathedral might just be the most likely image you picture. The cathedral has a museum that you can visit at a later time. You can buy tickets at the ticket kiosk outside the cathedral or receive free admission with the Moscow City Pass .

Moskva River

Moskva River

Next up on the tour is the Moskva River which runs through the center of Moscow. A cruise on the Moskva River is a great way to see the city from a different perspective.

GUM Shopping Mall

Who would think a mall would be one of Moscow’s most well-known attractions? GUM shopping mall across from the Kremlin makes up one of the four sides of the Red Square. The stores might be a bit too pricey for shopping, but the gorgeous interior is worth a visit. If that doesn’t convince you, the mall has some of the best ice cream! GUM is the only building you go inside during the free walking tour. There are pay bathrooms you can use while you have a few minutes of free time.

Kazan Cathedral

Moscow Kazan Cathedral

Located on the northeast corner of the Red Square, the Kazan Cathedral is another impressive dome-shaped building in Moscow that is also an active place of worship. Entering the cathedral is allowed, but remember to be respectful if people are worshipping.

Bolshoi Theater

Moscow Bolshoi Theater

Contrary to the previous buildings, the Bolshoi Theater isn’t along one of the four sides of the Red Square. Located a few minutes away, the theater is one of the best theaters in the world. Make sure to come back for a guided tour of the inside or make reservations far ahead of time to attend a ballet or opera.

Alexander Gardens

Moscow Alexander Gardens

The tour ends near the Alexander Gardens , a free public park located along the western Kremlin walls. The garden’s green lawns, sculptures and water fountains offer a nice place to take a stroll or relax a bit after some busy sightseeing.

Moscow Red Square

You can visit all these sites on your own, but the best part of doing the Moscow free tour is that you learn more information and have the potential to meet new people!

During my tour I started to talk to a woman from Malaysia and she invited me to join her and her friends for a Russian meal afterwards. It’s these little impromptu meetings and opportunities that I love most about traveling and add more to the sightseeing experience. While I was a little hesitant about going to the tour myself I told myself it would be a great opportunity to possibly meet new people. I love when things work out like that!

If you have already seen the iconic sights of the Red Square and are looking for other things to do in Moscow check out my What to Do in Moscow post that gives more off-the beaten track things to do in Moscow!

Moscow Free Walking Tour Visiting Information

Moscow Free Walking Tours

How to Get There

The Moscow Free Walking Tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum (a large red building). The website shows a map with the exact meeting point.

To get to the red square area you can take the blue 3 metro line to the Ploshchad Revolyutsii stop, or the green 2 line to the Teatralnaya station or the red 1 line to the Okhotny Ryad station. For more on how to use the metro read my Moscow Metro Guide .

Tours every day at 10:30am – 1pm in English

If you need a toilet before the start of the tour the Okhotny Ryad and GUM shopping malls are both close to the start of the tour. You will need to pay to use the toilets. There is a quick break mid-way through the tour at the GUM shopping mall where you can use the toilet if needed.

During the mid-way break in the tour you can buy some ice cream at the GUM shopping mall. There aren’t many other options or time for anything else. After the tour there are a lot of restaurants in the area. There are a couple of Varenichnaya №1 locations nearby if you would like some authentic Russian food. Their speciality is Russian dumplings. Another classic choice nearby is Grand Cafe Dr. Jhivago. While you can try traditional Russian foods like borscht and Olivier Salad, you may need a reservation. GUM has several restaurants, including a couple of buffets upstairs.

Recommendations

While I would start off your visit to Moscow with a tour of the Red Square, make sure to come back to each place to tour the inside. If you are visiting several sights consider buying the Moscow City Pass  to save money on admissions.

Other Tour Options

Another company  Moscow Free Tour  does a similar free walking tour in the Red Square. Check the site for the details on the starting point and times. If you prefer a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to St. Basil’s Cathedral included check out this tour . For a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to the Kremlin included you may want to take this tour or this one . Even if you don’t typically take tours, I would recommend taking tours as much as possible in Moscow. Many people do not speak English and most information is not in English either.

Where to Stay in Moscow

Find somewhere to stay in Moscow near the Red Square so you are convenient to all the sights!

I am planning to go to Moscow and St. Petersburg this year so reading this was very helpful. I would love to do the walking tour! What time of year did you do it? I am planning to go in August as I really can’t stand the cold 😀 Do you think August might be a good time to visit Moscow? Thank you so much for your information!

I did the walking tour in September. July and August are the best times to visit Moscow in my opinion, so you are going at a great time! I lived in Moscow for a year so I have a lot of posts about Moscow and a couple for St. Petersburg too. I would love to take the walking tour to get a good coverage of the area! The tip about paying for the bathrooms is great. That’s something I didn’t realize when I went to Europe for the first time from the US.

I always find it annoying paying for bathrooms in Europe!

I visited Moscow in June this year for the World Cup and I loved it. St. Basil’s Cathedral was the highlight for me, it’s such an impressive piece of architecture. I would’ve liked to visit more of Russia but maybe next time!

I really enjoyed Moscow during the World Cup too. The city was much livelier than usual!

I have been to St. Petersburg but never to Moscow. I think that these kind of tours are very useful to gather many information but I second your suggestion to visit the palaces inside as they have stunning interior decor and art treasures.

Yes, I think both going on tours and getting an overview and touring the inside of places are good to do.

Although I had to cancel my first appointment and rebook for another day, but everything was arranged comfortably. It was great having Andrew as my guide, in addition to his fluent English, he is punctual, polite and well informed about all details. He would use every single moment to make sure that everything is going as planned and he was always prepared to provide assistance whenever required. We took the metro from my hotel to the shooting range, everything was properly organized. By the time we arrived to the shooting center, the crew were not ready yet to start (waited 15 minutes), however, Andrew made sure to make use of this time via explaining some of the safety measures and guide lines in order not to waste this time in our time slot and to make sure I enjoy every bit of it and focus on just shooting. It was my first time shooting guns, but I still received the necessary training and instructions from the instructors in addition to the usual assistance by my guide Andrew. This review will cover both the monastery and the guide. The monastery is a bit of a drive but it’s not too far from Moscow’s city center. There are a few basic rules like no eating or drinking, no smoking on the premises, no selfies or disrespectful photos. Obviously, this is an active place of worship with monks and pupils live and pray so visitors have to be perfectly respectful regardless of their own beliefs. Keep in mind that the monastery is obliging visitors simply because they need the income to operate the magnificent facility. One thing to add here, we are Muslim and my wife wears hijab but we never felt unwelcome. The tour basically covers the history of the churches in cathedrals in the complex including the interior where you get a wealth of information about the ancient history of the buildings as well as the Soviet era when religions were banned and churches closed, sabotaged or demolished as well as recent history following the fall of communism and the lifting of religious restrictions. One particularly interesting aspect in this part of the tour is the climb up to the bell tower through extremely steep and narrow stairs but the view is more than worth the climb. Following this, you will be seated in a section of the monks dining hall. An apprentice will greet you and say prayers before you sit for a full meal that includes 2 salads, soup, main course, desert and traditional tea. The apprentice will come after the meal and offer to answer any questions you may have about the monastery. We were expected to spend 10 minutes max during this question and answer part but we spent almost an hour and left with many questions but we were ashamed to have kept the apprentice awake so late when he certainly must wake up in the early morning to prepare food for the monks. A quick walk through the monastery follows with brief history of other structures that were added at later stages to the monastery complex. Now, my favorite part of this review: the guide. We were blissfully lucky to have had Sergei from Put-in Tours. I wouldn’t know about other guides but Sergei was far, far beyond great. For lack of a better word, he was a gift from god. He knew practically everything about the history of the place and whatever he didn’t know he didn’t pretend to know and give us false information but rather he asked the monastery staff and got a full answer. He spoke fluent English (very rare in Moscow where virtually no one speaks English let alone speaks good English). On the ride in and out he was extremely friendly, sparked good conversations and was incredibly accommodating even though we over stayed the schedule by at least an hour. He translated instantly during the monk apprentice questions session and he even filled in the gaps when we had nothing to ask or say. My wife and I whispered to each other a few times “wow he is really a great guy”. We had some doubts about Put-in Tours (there was a bit of confusion earlier and plans were changed on short notice) but I confidently say Sergei was the best guide we’ve ever met in all our travels through the entirety of the Middle East, south east Asia, Europe and America. Words simply cannot describe our gratitude and appreciation. Overall, this is an absolute must-go in Moscow. I rate it 10/10. Read more Written September 30, 2021

Andrew was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and fun to talk to! He gave us just the right amount of insight about the Russian culture, Banya, and the life of Sergiev Possad. He did not bombard us with a history lesson. Anton was extremely skillfully and knowledgeable as well. Banya is a great experience and highly recommended to travellers looking to do something offbeat while in Moscow. All in all, it was a great experience. Much recommended! 👍🏽 Read more Written September 2, 2021
  • Beardy96521 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Can only be recommended! Awesome Experience!!! We drove on a BMP-1 Soviet Tank, shot a RPG-22,AK-47 and an SKS-45. I threw a grenade at an Armored vehicle and wore an WW2 era Soviet Helmet during the whole thing. We were allowed to handle Soviet Weapons like Mosin Nagants, SKS-45, Markarov pistols or AK47s. Everybody was very nice and friendly. In the Museum we got to see a wide variety of rare tanks like a German King Tiger or Soviet Su-100Y, outside a lot of Soviet Tanks and Aircraft can be seen. I also tested an T-80 tank driving simulator, it was a lot of fun. The whole experience lasted an entire day and everybody was very happy at the end. Can only be recommended! We went to all the major sights in Moscow and I was given good information about what I was seeing. Any question I wanted answered they knew. Because time wasn’t a consideration, they even added a few stops just to make my experience more enjoyable. I would recommend this company to anybody I know. Moscow Metro: the Underground Palaces

  • Description

Moscow Metro: the Underground Palaces

This 1.5 hour walking tour will take you around Moscow’s most spectacular Soviet-era metro stations. Often considered to be the most beautiful metro system in the world, it is also one of the busiest. The first Metro line, the Red line, was opened in 1935. It had just 13 stations, and ran between Gorky Park and Sokolniky Park. The Moscow Metro now has more than 210 stations.

An expert guide will tell you how the Moscow Metro was built as a palace for the people, and show you how this new form of underground architecture was designed to express a bright, optimistic and bold new Soviet future. During the Great Patriotic War the stations served as air raid shelters, and the new, even grander, stations built after 1945 celebrated different aspects of the Soviet victory in the war.

Admire the extravagant décor of the stations - the chandeliers, gold and marble, the giant bronze sculptures in Revolution Square station, the stained glass in Novoslobodskaya station and the iconic mosaics and futuristic steel arches in Mayakovskaya station. You will also hear about the sinister Metro-2, a secret tunnel network that is said to run parallel to the main system. Moscow metro tours don’t come any better than this!

What you can expect:

  • A 1.5-hour tour of Moscow metro stations with an expert local guide
  • Learn about Stalin’s rule and see how his vision was reflected in the architecture he commissioned
  • Visit four of the most intriguing Moscow stations: Revolution Square, Novoslobodskaya, Kievskaya and Mayakovskaya
  • Look for the hidden entrance to Metro-2 - a secret government line that is said to link the Kremlin to KGB outposts

See iconic Soviet-era architecture alongside lavish mosaics, sculptures and stained glass.

List of Operational UV EXPRESS ROUTES & FARES: Metro Manila, Rizal, Bulacan, Cavite & Laguna

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

After months of suspension due to COVID-19, public utility vehicles (PUVs) have been operating again, albeit in limited capacity. It can be remembered that public transportation was paralyzed in the early months of the pandemic, leaving commuters with very little options. But now that we’re slowly settling into the new normal, more PUVs are being allowed back into the streets.

Aside from jeepneys and buses, another mode of transportation that the public have relied on through the years is the UV Express . Over a hundred UV Express routes operate within Metro Manila and to and from nearby provinces like Cavite, Bulacan, Laguna, and Rizal.

Here are the different UV Express routes opened by the LTFRB as of November 23, 2020.

‘Expect a party’: Motown legend Smokey Robinson says Providence show will be ‘everything’

At 84, he’s still excited to be making music and, on his current tour, sharing not only old standards but new music off his first album in nearly a decade, “gasms.”.

Smokey Robinson

If you ask legendary Motown singer, songwriter, record producer, and music executive Smokey Robinson about the length of his career, he’ll say that age is just a number. When interviewed last year in advance of his scheduled performance at the Providence Performing Arts Center — a show that was postponed to Saturday — Robinson was 83. He is now 84.

And at a time when someone of his stature might rest on their laurels and enjoy retirement, the prolific songwriter balks at such a notion.

“I tried retiring once when I left the Miracles in 1972. That lasted about three years; I was climbing the walls,” he said during a phone call from his home in Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife, Frances, an interior designer. “I love writing music and I love performing live. I get a chance to go and be with the people. I cannot find anything that replaces that for me. I can’t find anything — as far as work goes — that I love that much.”

Born William Robinson into a working-class family in Detroit in 1940, he would soon count among his neighborhood friends Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross — artists with whom he would work as an adult. A fan of cowboy movies, Robinson was nicknamed Smokey Joe by an uncle when he was young. By his teenage years, he had dropped the “Joe” and went by Smokey Robinson.

He founded The Miracles in 1955, and, as the band’s frontman, co-wrote hits for the group that included “Shop Around,” “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” and “Tears of a Clown.” By the 1960s, he had also co-written and produced numerous top-10 songs for artists such as Mary Wells, the Temptations, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, and the Marvelettes.

In addition to having the distinction of being part of the team that launched Motown (along with close friend Berry Gordy), he’s earned numerous honors — including multiple Grammy Awards — and was inducted into the Rock and Roll and the Songwriters halls of fame.

He attributes his decades-long career in large part to his perspective, which emphasizes humility about his success and appreciation for it.

“Sustaining it is the hardest part. You can sustain it if you recognize what it is and how you got to be there — that you didn’t start it and you ain’t going to finish it,” he said. “You can’t be all hoity-toity and be all full of yourself — especially someone in the recording part of the entertainment industry, where you need people to have a career.”

The father of three adult children called being in the music industry a “privilege,” but said it’s in a “state of chaos” right now — especially for young people trying to break into it and signing deals with record labels that are often heavily weighted in favor of the label rather than the artist.

“It’s not like it used to be. Everything is streaming and online. … It’s just another world,” he said. “I don’t know right now of any record stores. We [used to] go in, browse, and find something we weren’t even going there to buy.”

Industry challenges aside, Robinson said music serves a greater purpose than mere entertainment.

“Music is a barrier breaker. When we first started Motown … there were places in Detroit that, as a Black person — especially a Black man — you just didn’t go,” he recalled. “But we started getting letters from kids in those areas, from white kids, who said, ‘We’ve got your music and we love your music.’ We didn’t get to save those letters. They would be invaluable now. But we were very happy to get them. They said their parents didn’t know they were listening to our music, because they would throw them [the records] away.”

Then, a year after that, Robinson said he and fellow Black musicians started getting letters from parents saying that they had heard music their kids were listening to and they loved it.

Another welcome change that came to pass was the removal of roped-off areas for Black people, which had been used by concert halls in the early days of his career.

“Eventually, we’d go there and you’d see white boys with Black girlfriends and Black boys with white girlfriends and all the kids were dancing together and having a good time,” he said. “And that is because the music gave them a common love. It broke down those barriers.”

And those barriers are still being broken, he maintained.

“I think music is still doing its job — even the music that’s been negativized. I mean, there are kids out there making some great hip-hop music and some great rap music,” he said.

And even though his music is a different genre, and he is of a different generation, Robinson said he is still excited to be making music and, on his current tour, sharing with audiences not only old standards but new music off last year’s album “Gasms,” his first in nearly a decade.

“I named it that because I wanted the controversy,” said the music icon. “It’s whatever you think when you hear the word ‘gasm.’ The first ‘gasm’ that comes to mind for most is ‘orgasm,’ but I looked it up before I completed the song and ‘gasms’ is any good feeling that you might have about any subject.”

And while there are numerous staples he plans on performing on the Providence stop of his “Soulfully Yours” tour, the one song that Robinson said is most requested: “My Girl.”

“It’s my international anthem as a songwriter,” he said. “We can be in a country where 65 percent of the people in the audience don’t speak English and as soon as they hear ‘bom bom bom, bom bom bom, bom bom bom …’ they know what’s getting ready to happen and they sing all the words to ‘My Girl.’”

When he’s not on tour, Robinson said he works at staying fit by doing yoga and walking.

“I do the things that are going to keep me mobile and keep me moving, because I don’t ever want to be old,” he said with a laugh.

He is also a golf enthusiast who plays twice a week and practices often.

“Golf is my dope,” he said. “I played football, baseball, and basketball for my high school. I’ve loved sports all my life, but there is nothing like golf.”

“If somebody calls me at 5 in the morning and says, ‘Hey Smoke man, let’s go play some baseball,’ I’m going to hang up. If someone calls and says, ‘Let’s go play some basketball,’ I’m going to hang up. If they say, ‘Let’s go play some golf,’ I’m going to say, ‘Where?’ It’s just the nature of the beast,” he added.

When asked what audiences in Providence can expect of his upcoming show, Robinson — who will be backed by a 10-piece band — said, “Everything.”

“They can expect a party. They’re coming to a party. It’s a two-and-a-half-hour party where we will sing some songs and enjoy ourselves,” he said. “I’m excited, and I can’t wait.”

Isaac Brown was a ‘kind’ son, his family said (Picture: West Midlands Police/SWNS)

A boy, 15, who was stabbed to death at a busy shopping centre on the outskirts of Birmingham has been named by police as Isaac Brown.

The teenager was knifed at the New Square shopping centre in West Bromwich around 9.15pm yesterday evening.

Officers arrested a teenager, 17,  on suspicion of murder today and he remains in custody for questioning.

Isaac’s family described him as a ‘wonderful, loving, kind, happy, son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin’.

‘Fun and mischievous, always smiling and always there to help,’ their tributes, shared by police, said.

‘We are unable to understand what has happened. We just want him back and this not to have happened.’

The shopping centre was cordoned off after the stabbing

Det Insp Ade George said: ‘Our thoughts remain with the friends and family of Isaac and we have specially trained officers in place to support them.

‘We hope the arrest provides some reassurance to the community as we understand the concern the tragic incident has caused to those living, working and visiting the town centre.

‘Extra officers will be in and around New Square as a cordon remains in place. Please talk to them if you have any concerns.

‘We are still keen to speak to anyone who was in the area last night around the time of the incident and urge anyone with information to get in touch.’

An update from New Square shopping centre today

A spokesperson for the shopping centre said: ‘An incident took place last night at New Square. Due to this, the shopping centre is currently fully closed.

‘We are now assisting West Midlands Police in their investigations and will give further updates, once we are able, regarding the reopening of the centre.

‘Thank you to all our customers for their patience and cooperation.’
