Kill Devil Hills, NC

April 23-30, 8 Days, 10 Meals

The North Carolina peninsula is home to lighthouses that have guarded the region for centuries and were beacons of comfort for mariners and seaborne travelers. It is also the site of the Wright Brothers’ first powered flight and home to the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast.

Begin this excursion to the Outer Banks riding across Indiana and conclude the day with an overnight stay in Youngstown, Ohio.

Press on through scenic Pennsylvania and Virginia before settling in for an evening on your own to explore Virginia Beach, VA.

NAUTICUS & BATTLESHIP WISCONSIN: Climb aboard the largest and last battleship built by the U.S. Navy. The USS Wisconsin was active in landings in Iwo Jima and Okinawa, World War II, the Korean War, and Operation Desert Storm. Spend the next three nights listening to the sounds of the Atlantic from your oceanfront balcony!

CAPE HATTERAS NATIONAL SEASHORE: Witness this natural and remote piece of beach, stretching over 70 miles from Bodie Island to Hatteras, once dubbed the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." A local guide shares stories of shipwrecks and lighthouses. CHICAMACOMICO LIFE-SAVING STATION: One of the most complete United States Life-Saving Stations that preserves, protects, and interprets the rich history of valiant men and women whose daring ocean rescues date back to the early 1900s. GRAVEYARD OF THE ATLANTIC MUSEUM: Rich maritime history of the Outer Banks displayed and told through shipwreck artifacts, memorabilia, and dramatic tales from 1524 through 1945. CAPE HATTERAS LIGHTHOUSE: Learn about the tallest brick beacon in the world, standing 210 feet high and first lit in December 1870!

WRIGHT BROTHERS NATIONAL MEMORIAL: Experience the first flight of Orville and Wilbur through full-scale reproductions of their 1902 glider, 1903 flying machine, and their first wind tunnel! The living quarters and hanger are reconstructed here. JOCKEY'S RIDGE STATE PARK: See the tallest natural sand dunes in the Eastern United States. BODIE ISLAND LIGHT STATION: Enjoy a tour of this horizontally-striped 156-foot tall structure that dates back to 1872, with its beacon flashing 19 miles over the ocean.

WILDHORSE ADVENTURES TOUR: Travel in a re-vamped hummer with a local guide along the dunes of the Atlantic to witness the Colonial Spanish Wild Mustangs. Private access into a conservation easement provides once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities. Depart the Outer Banks northbound traveling back through Virginia for an overnight stay near Quantico.

THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE MARINE CORPS: This self-guided tour surrounds you with the sounds, sensations, and legends of the USMC. Exhibits and artifacts include vehicles, uniforms, and weapons of the Marines on land, in the air, and at sea.

Leave the coast, but take the calming nature of the sea with you as you reminisce with fellow travelers about favorite sites and landmarks visited during this journey.

B=Breakfast, D=Dinner
