Undoubtedly one of the places to include in your visit to Granada and that will provide you with great information about the history of the capital.

Let’s see everything you need to know!

How to visit the Granada Cathedral (Prices, schedules, guided visits …)

It is really called “Santa y Apostólica Iglesia Catedral Metropolitana Basílica de la Encarnación de Granada”, but we better call it the Granada Cathedral! 😉

It is a Catholic temple, a masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance and the seat of the archdiocese of the city.

We are going to locate ourselves in its passage through the extensive history of Granada, but we are also going to know what is the schedule and price to visit the Cathedral of Granada .

The Granada Cathedral constitutes a masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance .

Its history spans hundreds of years and numerous events, but we can bring you up to speed with a brief historical introduction.

We have to go back to 1523 to talk about the beginning of the construction of this building directed by Enrique Egas and ordered to be built by Queen Isabel la Católica many years before.

Like many other cathedrals in Andalusia, it was built on top of the city’s main mosque.

In that same place, the works of the Royal Chapel had already begun, which in the future would contain the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs.

Until seeing the work as we know it today, it took 200 years and different architects.

Enrique Egas was in charge of the foundations (initially for a Gothic work), Diego de Siloé raised the Renaissance cathedral on the Gothic foundations, after his death, his disciple Juan de Maeda continued with the construction, Alonso Cano continued with the facade in 1664, already introducing baroque elements.

A posteriori, due to economic problems and the death of Alonso Cano, the Granada Cathedral was left with only one tower of the two that it should have.

Finally, in 1706, Francisco Hurtado Izquierdo and José Bada built the current Tabernacle of the cathedral.

Definitely! Several generations and several project changes to achieve one of the most important and visited monuments in Granada , one of the largest cathedrals in Europe and a masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance.

It is normal that we are very proud of our cathedral! 🤩

  • Side covers; The Puerta del Perdón, Puerta de San Jerónimo and Puerta del Ecce Homo.

Granada Cathedral

The Cathedral of Granada is a must-see in the city and a place to enjoy art in its purest form. The blend of styles, the dimensions of its floor plan and its incredible facade will draw you in from the very first moment you lay eyes on it.

Located in the heart of the city, a few meters from the Madraza , the Cathedral of Granada is one of the most imposing monuments in the city and a masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance.

History of the Cathedral

After the capture of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, the city took on a more Christian appearance with large constructions designed by the monarchs. The most ambitious project was a great Gothic cathedral with a royal chapel to house the remains of Isabella and Ferdinand.

Although its construction was planned for 1506, the sudden death of Queen Isabella two years earlier led to the construction of the Royal Chapel to bury her. Therefore, work on the Cathedral of Granada did not begin until 1523.

The foundations were laid on the old main mosque of Granada. After the death of the main architect, Diego de Siloé took over and changed the entire previous design to erect a majestic Renaissance cathedral .

Siloé, who was also in charge of building the Monastery of San Jerónimo , designed a great temple with five aisles and two 80-meter towers. In the end, only one of them, measuring 50 meters, could be built.

The cathedral of Granada was completed in 1704.

One of the most impressive parts of the temple is its facade, made by Alonso Cano in the mid-17th century. It is composed of a large arch with three interior arches and reliefs of virgins and other religious figures.

Cathedral interior

Visiting the Cathedral of Granada allows you to enjoy art in all its diversity. The arches of the ceiling, the altarpieces on the altar, the columns that separate the naves, the sculptures in the main chapel, the stained glass windows - it is fascinating to walk through the interior of the Cathedral of Granada, so pay attention to every detail.

It is worth mentioning that in the Cathedral of Granada lie the remains of Alonso Cano and Mariana Pineda .

One of the great attractions of the Cathedral of Granada is its fifteen chapels . Many of them house true masterpieces, such as paintings and sculptures by local artists. The Capilla Mayor stands out, which was intended to be the pantheon of the Habsburgs and was finally filled with paintings by Alonso Cano. Must-see

The Royal Chapel is one of the monuments of Granada that you can not miss if you travel to the city of the Alhambra . Seeing the ensemble of the chapel and admiring the tombs of historical figures of the stature of the Catholic Monarchs is key to fully appreciating the city of Granada.

Just as the Alhambra is the symbol of the Nasrid dynasty that ruled Muslim Spain, the Granada Cathedral is the symbol of the reconquest that pushed the last remaining Moors from the Iberian Peninsula. The grandiose cathedral with its larger-than-life columns and solemn white interior was the first Renaissance church to be built in Spain and one of the country’s most important.

The Royal Chapel (separate entrance) holds the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand & Isabella, forever intertwining their legacy with Granada’s. The Cathedral and Royal Chapel are two of the most important monuments of the city and visiting them is one of the best things to do in Granada .

Grandiose Renaissance interior of the Cathedral of Granada – Spain

The Cathedral of Granada is dedicated to Santa María de la Encarnación (Saint Maria of the Incarnation). This is where the cathedral gets its full name of Santa Iglesia Catedral Metropolitana de la Encarnación de Granada. The incarnation of God is the architectural and iconographic theme found throughout the building.

The grandeur of the cathedral’s interior is mesmerizing. It is after all, one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. Its airy white walls contrast with golden reliefs and colorful stained glass windows and works of art scattered throughout the temple.

The beautiful marble floor with alternating black and white tiles leads to the Main Chapel of the Cathedral of Granada. This jewel of the Spanish Renaissance was designed as a pantheon to house the tombs of the Habsburgs .

However, it was never used for this purpose, since their tombs ended up in the Monastery of El Escorial built by Philip II. The arches of the pantheon were supposed to hold the royal tombs. Since there were no tombs to be placed inside, the space was filled with paintings by Alonso Cano representing scenes from the life of the Virgin (1652 - 1654).

Under the splendid hemispherical dome of the Main Chapel designed by Siloé, 24 impressive stained glass windows extend. They were painted by Dirk Vellert and Juan del Campo, and tell the story of the Redemption of Jesus Christ.

In the Main Chapel you can also admire the sculptures of the Catholic Monarchs (by Pedro de Mena) and the twelve apostles (by Bernabé de Gaviria), as well as the busts of Adam and Eve (by Alonso Cano).

The side naves are occupied by chapels from different periods. In total, the cathedral of Granada houses no less than 15 chapels full of artistic treasures.

Among them, the Royal Chapel stands out. This Gothic style chapel houses the remains of the Catholic Monarchs, their daughter and heir Joanna of Castile and her husband, Philip the Handsome. However, please note that, although the Royal Chapel is attached to the cathedral, its entrance is separate and costs 6 €.

After seven centuries of occupation, the capture of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492 marked the end of Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella wanted Granada to become the symbol of their victory and planned several constructions to "christianize" the city.

As was done in many other reconquered cities in Spain, the monarchs decided to build a cathedral over the old Great Mosque of Granada. This new Catholic cathedral would become a strong symbol of the dominance of the victorious Christian monarchs over the defeated Muslims.

After reconquering the Spanish Peninsula, the monarchs wanted to forever be remembered for their momentous achievement. So in addition to constructing a grandiose Gothic cathedral, they decided to built a Royal Chapel within the cathedral where their tombs could be displayed.

This has secured their legacy even to today, as the cathedral and chapel are two of the most visited attractions in all of Granada. However, after the sudden death of Queen Isabella in 1504, it was decided to start building the Royal Chapel first to house her remains.

Once the Royal Chapel was completed, work on the rest of the cathedral began. The architect and sculptor Enrique Egas was responsible for designing a Gothic style temple based on the cathedral of his hometown, Toledo. Work began with the laying of the first stone in 1523.

In 1529, the architect and sculptor Diego de Siloé replaced Egas at the helm of the project. Siloé had studied in Italy and was a proponent of the Renaissance style. Because of this, he wanted to change the design of the cathedral from Gothic in to the new in vogue style. However, this was no easy task.

First, he had to convince Charles V. For the king, it was important to comply with the wishes of his grandparents, the Catholic Monarchs, who wanted their remains to rest in a Gothic temple. Charles V was eventually persuaded and even ended up becoming a great fan of the Renaissance style. Proof of this is the Christian palace of the Alhambra, also known as the Palace of Charles V .

Main Façade of the Granada Cathedral, Andalusia – Spain

There were also certain structural limitations that were faced when they tried to convert the cathedral from Gothic to Renaissance since the foundations of the cathedral had already been laid.

But Siloé managed to find a way around this problem and dedicated the rest of his life to the construction of the Granada Cathedral. The building has since become one of the crowning works of the Renaissance in Spain.

After Siloé's death in 1563, his protege Juan de Maeda continued the work. However, during the reign of Philip II (1556-1598), Granada began to lose its importance as a city. As a result, work on the cathedral slowed down.

In 1664, work began on the main façade, under the direction of the painter, sculptor and architect Alonso Cano . The abundant decoration and Baroque elements of the cathedral’s façade are a stark contrast to the solemn interior.

Cano was also responsible for the construction of the two monumental towers of more than 80 m (260 ft) high that had been planned by Siloé. After only two thirds of the right tower had been built, there were already multiple collapses which killed several workers.

The accidents, along with the face that Granada suffers from frequent earthquakes, caused the king to stop the construction. This is the reason why the cathedral only has one tower that is 57 meters (187 ft) tall.

Finally, the Granada Cathedral was completed in 1704, after 181 years of construction.

Granada Cathedral

This construction was based on the Gothic model of the Toledo Cathedral, and was designed by Enrique Egas. In 1529, it was entrusted to the architect Diego de Siloé who designed a new design for the temple based on the Spanish Renaissance style and joining the circular floor with the basilical one which supposed the recognition of the architects of that time. It has five naves that separated by 20 huge pillars with Classic columns and an ambulatory whose stained- glass windows are Flemish, by Teodoro de Holanda and Juan Campen. The amazing Baroque façade was designed by Alonso Cano and belongs to 1667. It was understood as a monumental Triumphal arch with coffered ceilings and three bays are moved between pilasters, giving intense luminous contrasts to the complex. Siloé firstly planned to build two high towers: one of them was not carried out and the other one only reached 7 meters high of 81 meters as understood. Inside the temple, la Major Chapel, Siloé´ s masterpiece, is rounded and very high and is supported by 12 thick Corinthian pillars. Here, we can find the Catholic Kings in kneeling position, sculpted by Pedro Mena and Madrazo. The main eaves board of the sacristy is taken up by a great Crucified Christ, by Martinez Montanez. In a low shop window, we can see a small Immaculate Virgin, by Alonso Cano. The lectern is very ornamented and was carried out by Alonso Cano. We should highlight the Virgen del Pilar, Nuestra Señora de la Antigua and de la Trinidad. Close to the Cathedral we can find the Iglesia del Sagrario (Church of the Tabernacle) in a Neoclassic style, with a high dome from the Renaissance, built by Hurtado Izquierdo (1705- 1759). In the Museum of the Cathedral we can see masterpieces of painters such as Bocanegra, Risueño, Sánchez-Cotán, Raxis, Cieza, Alonso, Pacheco and sculptures of Alonso, Pedro de Mena and Pablo Pacheco.

Built: XVI Century (1518- 1704)

Worth seeing in Granada: Visit to Granada Cathedral

Santa María de la Encarnación de Granada, the Cathedral of Granada, is located in the heart of Granada’s old town. It is one of the oldest cathedrals in the Christian West and one of the first to be built on the Iberian Peninsula.

The houses of Granada’s old town are tightly packed around the church building. There is hardly a place where you can step back far enough to catch a glimpse of the cathedral. The main façade of the cathedral can be admired from the Plaza de las Pasiegas. The bell tower is on the left-hand side of the building. Originally, the church was to be flanked by 2 gigantic 81-metre-high towers. The only tower that was built is on the left-hand side and is 57 meters high.

Construction of the cathedral

After Granada was reconquered by the Spanish kings, the city was named an archbishopric in May 1492. Queen Isabella I insisted that a prestigious church be built soon, but Ferdinand II only gave the order after her death.

In 1517, the Capilla Real burial chapel was completed first. The foundation stone for the cathedral was laid 6 years later. The entire building stands on the remains of a mosque. It measures 115.40 m in length and 65 m in width.

This was followed by a construction period in which not only the planning was changed several times, but also the master builders changed several times, and after the chancel was finally completed in 1561, it was separated from the rest of the church building, which was still under construction, and used as a cathedral. A number of changes and extensions were made, such as the construction of the baroque domed church Iglesia del Sagrario on the site of the planned second tower. It was not until 1704, 181 years after the foundation stone was laid, that construction was finally declared complete.

Kathedrale von Granada

The result was a rectangular church building with a nave and two side aisles, adjoined by a semi-circular choir. Attached to the side are the Capilla Real, the Iglesia del Sagrario and the sacristy.

View into the cathedral of Granada

As we enter the church, we find ourselves in a very high, very bright church, which is structured by mighty columns. Due to their design, these pillars appear as if several pillars have been combined into one. They are not slender and graceful, as we are used to seeing in some churches, but rather solid and stable. I also really like the design of the ceiling. It is whitewashed and decorated with graphic ornaments.

Church windows are always something very special. In the cathedral of Granada, many windows, especially in the upper section, are made of bright, translucent glass. But we also discovered windows with pictorial designs.

Fenster in der Kathedrale von Granada

The choir and side chapels are dedicated to saints and precious works of art from the 17th and 18th centuries decorate each individual chapel. In some of the side chapels, we discover donation boxes embedded in the wall, each dedicated to a saint. Here the faithful can donate for the preservation of this chapel.

Kathedrale von Granada

The two organs from around 1745 are impressive. They stand at the end of the nave and are richly decorated. I find the arrangement of the organs fascinating. They stand parallel to each other and certainly produce an impressive sound when used simultaneously.

Orgeln

The main altar is located in the semicircular choir. The true splendor of the chapel is revealed here beneath the starry dome. The building is divided into several levels – two different rows of windows and two surrounding galleries with pictures. The gleaming altar with its domed roof stands in the middle of the choir. The pulpit on the side is decorated with carvings.

Altar in der Kathedrale von Granada

If you would like to take a guided tour of Granada Cathedral, you should download the audio guide onto your cell phone in advance. I found some of the narrations very interesting and, above all, informative.

Capilla Real

The Royal Chapel (Capilla Real) is located in the south-eastern section of Granada Cathedral. Here lie the mortal remains of the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II and Isabella of Castile. Their daughter Joan of Castile and her son-in-law, the Habsburg Philip the Fair and Crown Prince Miguel da Paz, who died at the age of two, are also buried there.

The royal chapel was only completed after the death of the rulers. The coffins were only transferred from the Alhambrain to the Capilla Real in 1520.

There is a museum in the sacristy. Here you can see beautiful Renaissance works by Botticelli, Perugino, Dierick Bouts, Rogier van der Weyden and Hans Memling.

Iglesia del Sagrario

Another entrance leads us into the Iglesia del Sagrario. Devotions and church services are held here regularly throughout the day. It is not possible to visit then and visitors wait outside the door to be admitted.

We caught the end of a service and went into the church. Entry here is free of charge.

Iglesia del Sagrario

The church is visually very different to the cathedral. Colorful ceiling and wall designs with large paintings make it appear much darker.

The chancel is overwhelming. I was captivated by the many smaller panels with impressively designed figures depicting biblical scenes. I could have sat here for hours looking at the paintings.

Granada Cathedral and the Capilla Real

The cathedral of Granada is dedicated to the Virgin of the Incarnation. This grand 16th century church largely dates back to the Renaissance and is 115 metres long and 67 metres wide. The Capilla Real, the Royal burial chapel, abuts the cathedral and can be visited separately.

History Cathedral of Granada

The cathedral's construction was started in 1501 by order of the Catholic royal couple, after Granada had been retaken from the Arabs by the Christians in 1492. The cathedral was built on the former site of a mosque and the burial chapel for the kings was completed first. For a time, the old mosque served as a cathedral. The following decades, the cathedral was built in Renaissance style and finally put to use in 1561. Afterwards, the necessary changes and additions have occurred, such as the Baroque dome church Iglesia del Sagrario in the place of the planned second tower. For nearly 200 years, various architects laboured on the build of this cathedral, making the cathedral of Granada a mix of Renaissance and Gothic styles.

The most original and important part of the cathedral of Granada is the round presbytery in Renaissance style, which is surrounded by a series of chapels. The cathedral's nave is a combination of Renaissance and Gothic style, in which the two large gilded 18th century organs stand out.

Capilla Real

Capilla Real - Royal Chapel of Granada

Next to the cathedral is the Royal burial chapel (Capilla Real) form 1517 with the mausoleum of the Catholic royal couple Ferdinand and Isabella, Juana la Loca and Felipe el Hermoso. The later kings, however, were buried in the monastery El Escorial nearby Madrid. In the sacristy of this chapel, you can now find a collection of art objects that once belonged to queen Isabella.

Dome Inside Granada Cathedral

Getty Images/Perspectives

Catedral de Granada

From street level it’s difficult to appreciate the immensity of Granada’s cavernous, boxed-in cathedral. But it’s nonetheless a monumental work of architecture, and one of Spain's largest cathedrals. Built atop Granada’s former mosque, it was originally intended to be Gothic, but over the two centuries of its construction (1523–1704) it underwent major modifications. Most notably, architect Diego de Siloé changed its layout to a Renaissance style, and Alonso Cano added a magnificent 17th-century baroque facade.

Cano was also responsible for two wooden busts of Adam and Eve in the Capilla Mayor (main chapel), which sit above small praying statues of the Reyes Católicos, who rest in the adjacent Capilla Real . The cathedral’s interior is vast with 20 huge white piers rising from a black-and-white tiled floor to a ceiling capped by a 30m-high dome.

A Testament to Time and Artistry

The Granada Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, stands as a testament to the enduring artistry of the Spanish Renaissance. Its construction began in the early 16th century, during the reign of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. The cathedral’s foundation stone was laid in 1518 by the Catholic Monarchs themselves. However, the Granada Cathedral is more than just a place of worship; it’s a symbol of Spain’s transformation from its Moorish past to its Christian present.

The architects and craftsmen who contributed to the cathedral’s construction poured their passion and expertise into every detail. This dedication to artistry is evident in the intricate carvings, delicate stained-glass windows, and the overall grandeur of the cathedral’s design. As you stand before its magnificent facade, you can’t help but be transported back in time, marvelling at the skill and vision of those who created this architectural wonder.

One cannot help but be awestruck by the cathedral’s grandeur. It is a prime example of Spanish Renaissance architecture.

Historical Significance of the Granada Cathedral

A Symbol of Christian Triumph

The construction of the Granada Cathedral marked the symbolic triumph of Christianity in Spain. It was built on the site of the city’s former central mosque, which was demolished to make way for the cathedral. This deliberate choice of location underscores the religious and political significance of the cathedral.

The cathedral’s construction was a statement of Spain’s commitment to the Catholic faith after the Reconquista, the period of Christian reconquest. It represented a new chapter in Spanish history, one where Christianity would dominate, and the cathedral itself would become a symbol of this religious and cultural shift.

Role of the Catholic Monarchs

The Catholic Monarchs were staunch supporters of Catholicism and played a crucial role in promoting the Christian faith in Spain. They were instrumental in the funding and construction of Granada Cathedral, which was seen as a symbol of their growing power and religious devotion.

Under their patronage, the cathedral became a centre for religious ceremonies and activities. It served as a place of worship for both the monarchy and the general public, reflecting the strong connection between the Spanish Crown and the Catholic Church. The presence of their ornate tombs in the Royal Chapel within the cathedral further emphasizes their enduring legacy.

Architectural Highlights of the Granada Cathedral

Striking facade.

The facade of the Granada Cathedral is a masterpiece in itself. The primary entrance, adorned with intricate sculptures and reliefs, is a magnificent example of the Spanish Renaissance style. The central figure on the facade is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is the cathedral’s dedication.

As you stand before this grand entrance, take a moment to appreciate the attention to detail in the sculptures that depict biblical scenes and saints. The facade is not just a work of art; it’s a visual narrative of the Christian faith, and it sets the tone for the spiritual journey you’re about to embark upon within the cathedral’s walls.

Upon entering the cathedral, visitors are greeted by a vast, awe-inspiring nave. The interior is a harmonious blend of Gothic and Renaissance elements. The nave is flanked by rows of towering columns, and the ceiling is a striking vaulted structure that adds to the sense of grandeur.

As you walk down the nave, look up to admire the intricate ribbed vaults that seem to reach for the heavens. The play of light and shadow on the stone surfaces creates a mesmerizing effect, adding to the cathedral’s sense of mystique and spirituality. It’s a space that invites quiet contemplation and reverence.

Capilla Mayor

The Capilla Mayor, or Main Chapel , is the focal point of the Granada Cathedral’s religious activities . It houses the cathedral’s main altar, which is adorned with a stunning crucifix and an intricately carved wooden choir.

Step into the Capilla Mayor and take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the altar. The crucifix at the center is a masterpiece of religious art, and the choir stalls are a testament to the craftsmanship of the woodworkers who created them. This space has witnessed countless religious ceremonies and represents the heart of the cathedral’s spiritual life.

The Royal Chapel: A Marvel within a Marvel

Within the precincts of the Granada Cathedral lies another architectural gem: the Royal Chapel, or “Capilla Real” in Spanish. This remarkable structure deserves special attention for its historical significance and stunning design.

It is located next to the Cathedral, but it has its own separate entrance and its own opening hours for public visits.

Royal Chapel

A Royal Resting Place

The Royal Chapel was built to serve as the final resting place for Spain’s Catholic Monarchs, Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. The chapel is a testament to the monarchy’s pivotal role in the unification of Spain and the consolidation of Catholicism as the dominant religion.

The tombs of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, along with those of their daughter Joanna of Castile and her husband Philip the Handsome, are elaborate and ornate. These royal tombs are a reflection of the monarchy’s enduring influence on Spain’s history and culture.

Gothic Majesty

The architecture of the Royal Chapel follows a predominantly Gothic style. Its interior is adorned with ornate altarpieces, beautiful stained-glass windows, and intricate woodwork. The soaring Gothic arches and ribbed vaults create a sense of grandeur and solemnity that befits the final resting place of royalty.

The chapel’s Gothic design is a stark contrast to the Renaissance and Baroque elements of the main cathedral, showcasing the diversity of architectural styles that coexist within this magnificent complex.

The Royal Chapel’s Altarpiece

The altarpiece of the Royal Chapel is an exquisite work of artistry. Crafted by sculptor Felipe Bigarny, it depicts scenes from the lives of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist. The altarpiece’s richly detailed sculptures and the gilded framework make it a focal point of the chapel.

Take a moment to study the intricate details of the altarpiece, from the delicate facial expressions of the saints to the intricate folds of their robes. It’s a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the artisans who dedicated themselves to creating this masterpiece.

Cathedral of Granada

Cathedral of Granada

It was commissioned by Queen Isabella on the site of the Main Mosque, which later on became the Santa María de la O Church. It was designed by Enrique Egas but was modified according the Renaissance style of Diego de Siloé.

The construction works started at the beginning of the 16th century. It turned out to be a Spanish Renaissance masterpiece, praised by writers and historians.

Its exterior structure is Gothic. The main façade was designed by Alonso Cano. The inside of the church is Renaissance on a Gothic floor plan, with chapels at the sides and a main chapel, a masterpiece by Siloé. The Cathedral treasure is kept in what used to be the Chapter Room. Today it holds ornaments and priceless treasures.

The ticket to the Cathedral includes the visit to the museum.

Granada Cathedral of the Incarnation

Cathedral in granada.

Main Nave Of The Granada Cathedral.

The Catedral de Granada, Santa Iglesia Catedral Metropolitana de la Encarnación de Granada   or Granada Cathedral of the Incarnation is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Granada in Spain. This cathedral is a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance style. This grand 16th century church largely dates back to the Renaissance and is 115 metres long and 67 metres wide. The Capilla Real, the Royal burial chapel, abuts the cathedral and can be visited separately, holds the effigies of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella created by Granadino sculptor Pedro de Mena.  King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella were the Catholic monarchs who seized Granada from the Moors in 1492.

History of Granada Cathedral in under a Minute

What does the granada cathedral look like, diego de siloé’s cathedral design, the cupola of the catedral, the door of forgiveness, stained-glass windows, symbolism of the main chapel, tours of granada cathedral and its environs, artistic innovations of the granada cathedral, insider tips for visiting the granada cathedral of the incarnation.

Granada Cathedral was commissioned to be built by Queen Isabella after the conquest of Granada in 1492. The cathedral’s construction was started in 1501 on the site of the Mosque in the old Muslim Medinaand the first stone was laid in 1523. Its architect was Enrique Egas, a master of the Old Gothic School and its earliest plans had Gothic designs, such as are evident in the Royal Chapel of Granada also by Enrique Egas. However most of the church’s construction occurred when the Spanish Renaissance style was replacing the Gothic in Spanish architecture.

These works on the foundations, lasted five years and Egas was replaced by Diego of Siloam, another Spanish sculptor and architect trained in Italy. His first decision was to change the Gothic style of Granada Cathedral to the Renaissance style. He worked for nearly four decades on the structure from ground to cornice. The cathedral was finally put to use in 1561.

After Siloam’s death, a succession of prestigious architects – including Juan de Maena, Juan de Orea and Ambrosio de Vico – worked on the Renaissance cathedral, but their predecessor’s ingenuity had already left its mark on the building. Changes and additions have occurred, such as the Baroque dome church Iglesia del Sagrario in the place of the planned second tower. For nearly 200 years, various architects laboured on the build of this cathedral, making the cathedral of Granada a mix of Renaissance and Gothic styles.

The cathedral dominates with its imposing mass the surrounding district. Cathedral of Granada has impressive facades and a stunning interior with a grand altar and several chapels. It is the 4th largest Cathedral in the world. Granada Cathedral has many chapels of different ages and styles, the most interesting being the chapel of Nuestra Senora de la Antigua. The Cathedral of Granada was left incomplete in its facade. Of the two towers planned, only one was built one and its height had to be lowered because the foundations for a Gothic cathedral could not resist the heavy mass of the tower.

A problem that Diego de Siloé faced was how to combine the cathedral’s height with the proportions of the Classic architecture. According to these ‘ rules of proportion’ , the height of the pillars should be determined by their diameters. However this would have gone against Renaissance feeling of spaciousness. His solution was to adapt and use the model of the Roman temples for pillars. It is thought that the source of inspiration for this solution was taken from the Great Mosque at Córdoba. The pillars in the cathedral contain plinth, base and shaft capital in harmony with those of the Roman temples. In addition he introduced an additional tier which added a base and pilaster to fill the distance between the upper part of the building and the base of the vaults. Another innovation from Diego de Siloé was to move the cupola from its traditional location above the crossing to the apse. This may have been done so that the main altar receives daylight from the outside or because the royal pantheon was not to be placed in the sacrarium.

The cupola is traditionally the most important part of the cathedral with its stained-glass windows providing a great amount of light. The structure of the cupola uses the medieval technique of buttressing with traditional buttresses and flying buttresses. This gives a greater strength to the cupola walls. Again following the rules of Gothic architecture, the altar should be placed as a natural conclusion to the central aisle while in the Renaissance, it was common to have a central raised altar or something in between the two options. Siloé had chosen to move the elevation to the end of the nave and made an opening in the cylinder where it joined the central nave however this caused a large part of its support to be removed. To solve this issue he designed a great arch which handles a third of the weight of the dome. This arch is also framed by two smaller arches and perfectly blends the basilica and the central areas of the church.

The main door into the cathedral is the greatest of all Siloé’s achievements and is full of symbolism. He worked on the door himself, which displayed his skills as an architect, sculptor and carpenter. He left his own signature in a cartouche below one of the niches in the lower stage of the door. An inscription alluding to the conquest of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs is displayed above the central arch and an eagle with the royal shield appears on top of the left-hand pier. The cathedral also represents the greatest project of the Roman Emperor Charles V so it was necessary to add a double-headed eagle on the right-hand pier. This eagle represents the marriage between the empire and the Catholic religion. The many empty niches at the door suggests that the idea was to fill them with statues combining religion and the message of power from the central cartouche. Diego de Siloé worked on this doorway from 1535 to 1538 combining Justice and Faith ideas with nature icons. The upper stages of the doorway should have also been decorated the same way but Siloé’s successors did not follow his design. This can clearly be seen by the lack of ornamentation and relief.

The stained-glass of the cathedral is full of complexity and quite rare to find during the Renaissance period in Granada, with the only other example being the church of St. Jerome. One of the main features of these windows is their quality. They are like paintings on glass instead of a canvas. Color, composition and light contribute to a very realistic result that is not common in the time. It is no doubt that Siloé intended these windows to be a central part of the main chapel. The following reasons were part of his decision:

  • The tradition dictated that stained-glass windows should be incorporated to create colored light.
  • The main chapel, the Sancta Sanctorum and the place of the tabernacle need to be illuminated with a different light from the rest of the cathedral.
  • He needed to support the development of iconography in the chapel. Other methods like frescoes, murals and figures had suffered a setback in the past years.

The iconographic subjects of the main chapel represent the life, passion and death of Jesus Christ. The light entering through the windows seems to convey the message “I am the light of the World” . Other interpretations point that the idea of triumph over death prevails and it´s the main focal point. In any case, the last reference is to the authors of these works, the Flemish artists Teodoro de Holanda and Juan del Campo. although each artist has its own style, both sets of stained-glass panes are very similar. Below the stained-glass windows hangs a series of canvases painted by Alonso Cano. these are unique in the history of Spanish painting. Cano combined monumentality, emotion and religion in each of his seven canvases. These paintings celebrate the life of the Virgin Mary. The theme was already decided by Siloé, but he wanted to include sculptures rather than paint. The church is also dedicated to the Incarnation, hence the central canvas is devoted to this mystery. Finally, there was a strong support for the Immaculate Conception after the conquest which explains where this paintings are situated.

Cathedral FaçadeDesigned in 1667, the façade of the cathedral of Granada does not match the general standards of the Baroque. Alonso Cano had a bigger sympathy for the Classic style and he tried to keep the same styling trend as the rest of the cathedral. The façade includes a triple arch that clones the interior of the structure. The elements that can identify this work with the Baroque are:

  • The circular oeil-de-beuf window in the centre, finished with zig-zag teardrops.
  • The use of ornamentation on top of plaques and cartouches
  • The pronounced cornices

If you were wondering which tickets and tours are the best ones to explore the Granada Cathedral?  Check out these popular options:

The cathedral includes many artistic innovations:

  • The piers are very similar to those found in the cathedral of Pienza in Italy. They convey the impression of lightness and space.
  • In contrast to the older longitudinal concept that leads to the main altar, the visitor is now invited to look into all directions. This is a similar concept to the one used by Brunelleschi in the churches of San Lorenzo and Santo Spirito in Florence.
  • The whitewash lends a luminous effect to the inside. This is even more relevant when we consider that later architects decided to block a good amount of windows originally planned by Siloé (about half of the one’s planned by the architect)
  • The Renaissance architecture assumptions are present in Diego de Siloé’s vision. In this cathedral concepts such as number, proportion, geometry and harmony take great importance.
  • To soak up the brilliance of the Catedral, one can stand in the main chapel and lift your gaze to the stained glass windows, sculptures and paintings on the sides.
  • There is no prior need to buy tickets as they are always available.
  • You can stroll around and try visiting an adjacent chapel where the Spanish Catholic kings that conquered Granada from the Turks are buried.

Duchess of Edinburgh becomes first British royal to visit Ukraine since start of war with Russia

visit granada cathedral

The Duchess of Edinburgh has become the first member of the British royal family to visit war-torn Ukraine .

Sophie met the president and first lady of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky and Olena Zelenska, on Monday morning and delivered a message to them on behalf of King Charles.

They discussed how to support survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and the women peacebuilders who have a part to play in ensuring Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction is effective and long-lasting, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said.

The duchess visited Ukraine at the request of the FCDO to demonstrate solidarity with the women, men and children impacted by Russia's invasion .

Sophie met survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and torture who shared their stories, and talked to children who have been returned to Ukraine after being forcibly separated from their families and deported by Russia as part of a sustained campaign to erase Ukrainian culture, the FCDO said.

During the visit, Sophie paid her respects to those who died in Bucha , two years on from its liberation from Russian forces, and visited the “Road to Life”, a bridge which became a key part of the Ukrainian resistance when it was blown up to stop Russian troops proceeding to Kyiv, and later became a vital route for people to flee to safety from the Russian occupation.

The duchess also demonstrated her support for Ukrainian women who have played important roles in the conflict and community recovery, in a meeting with volunteers who help their communities cope with the aftermath of attacks with mental health care activities for children.

During a video address at a conference on conflict-related sexual violence in Ukraine last month, the duchess said: “Survivors here and around the world have spoken out so bravely about their experiences.

“They are the most powerful advocates who remind us all that we must not turn our backs on the horrors of this crime, we must never forget survivors.

“Rather, we must stand shoulder to shoulder with all survivors to secure justice and holistic redress, and ensure that this crime isn’t an accepted part of conflict.

“Their rights and their voices must be at the heart of all our efforts to consign conflict-related sexual violence to the history books.”

Sophie announced her commitment to champion the UK’s Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) and the UN’s Women, Peace and Security Agenda (WPS) on International Women’s Day in 2019.

She has visited a number of countries over the years to highlight the impact of historical and ongoing conflict, including Kosovo, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Colombia.
