New San Diego Brand Campaign – Happy and You Know It

2022 Winter/Spring Advertising Program Overview

To stimulate demand during the upcoming spring and summer season, the San Diego Tourism Authority is launching a new brand advertising campaign – “ Happy and You Know It” – with the :30 TV commercial debuting on national television Jan. 29 during the Farmers Insurance Open:

“Happy and You Know It” San Diego’s chill, happy and carefree vibe leaves everyone who visits cheerful, optimistic, and able to “put their guard down.” Happiness is the norm and easily attainable in San Diego, although we all express it in our own unique way. Some show it with a simple smile while others through a joyful dance. But there’s one thing we can all agree on – San Diego is not only the place where we find happiness … but feel free to really show it.

The development of the new “Happy and You Know It” campaign is the product of extensive brand research that the SDTA and its advertising agency, The Shipyard, conducted over the last year. Focus groups consisting of leisure travelers in California, the West, Northeast, Southeast and Midwest were interviewed to determine how attitudes and perceptions of the San Diego brand have evolved throughout the pandemic. The clear findings were that San Diego has a well-defined brand, with focus group participants describing the destination as a “feel-good, friendly, vibrant place that is both laid-back and lively.”

Using new music from Michael Franti & Spearhead, the theme song for the campaign modernizes the catchy nursery-rhyme song with upbeat sounds to evoke the fun, vibrant and inviting characteristics of the destination.

Brand TV Spot

This fiscal year, the  “Happy and You Know It”  campaign will be integrated across SDTA’s advertising program of work, and the multimedia approach includes television, digital, radio and out-of-home executions that will reach western regional and national audiences, with a focus on the key markets of Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco and Sacramento.

Winter/Spring: Program Highlights

$8 million in media will run in the U.S. during the January-June 2022 time period.

Meetings & Conventions Initiative – Print, Digital, Custom Content

Supporting direct sales for the San Diego Convention Center and Hotel Meetings, the new “Happiness Is” group meetings campaign launched in FY 2022 to announce that San Diego is open and ready to reignite and restore professional meetings and events following the pandemic. The campaign will continue through June, serving as an extension to the group meetings audience and key decision-makers (Meeting & Event planners, Conference Organizers and C-Suite executives), and leaning into San Diego’s positivity and optimism — which inspires creativity, innovation, and opportunity — while also highlighting the differentiating factors of hosting a meeting in San Diego. Program highlights include:

While San Diego is full of activities and attractions, it’s not all that large. There are many areas you can explore just by walking through them, so you don’t have to worry about traffic, driving or the hassle of parking.

One especially walkable area is Balboa Park and the nearby neighborhoods of Downtown San Diego which include the Gaslamp Quarter, Embarcadero and Harborview, located on the San Diego Bay.

Stroll through the Balboa Park, visit one of its educational museums, stop by the world-famous San Diego Zoo, have lunch at a sidewalk café in Bankers Hill, immerse yourself in the history and architecture of the Gaslamp Quarter and learn about the city’s naval history at the USS Midway Museum in the Embarcadero.

With so much to do in such a small area, San Diego will prove to be the perfect vacation destination for you and your family!

The essential guide to visiting San Diego

Here’s all the info you need to explore the southern California city’s sunny beaches, eclectic museums, and charming historic neighborhoods.

Visitors enjoy a walk and tandem bike ride down El Prado in Balboa Park in San Diego, CA.

Why you should visit San Diego

Seventy miles of sun-kissed coastline . The San Diego Museum of Art and the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park. Pop-culture fest Comic-Con . California’s first Catholic mission .

Best time to visit San Diego

Spring:   In March and April, golden yarrows, mariposa lilies, and California poppies burst forth in Mission Trails Regional Park . Pink and white blooms star in March’s Cherry Blossom Festival in the Japanese Friendship Garden and Museum .

Summer: Temperatures in the 70s Fahrenheit make summer an ideal time to walk, surf, or sunbathe on local beaches like Torrey Pines   and La Jolla Shores . Iconic seasonal events include Comic-Con International downtown and the S an Diego Pride Parade , which brings up to 300,000 revelers to Hillcrest.

Autumn:   Experience one of the country’s largest Day of the Dead processions (plus live music and food vendors) in Barrio Logan . Snorkel amid the (harmless) leopard sharks in La Jolla in September, the best time to spot the timid creatures.

Winter:   From December to March, around 20,000 gray whales migrate from Alaska to Baja California, passing through the deep waters off the San Diego coast. Take a whale-watching cruise from Mission Bay, keeping an eye out for dolphin mega pods. February is Museum Month , with half-price admission to over 40 city showplaces, including the Whaley House Museum in Old Town, the USS Midway Museum in downtown, and the Women’s Museum of California   in Balboa Park.

Lay of the land

Coastal neighborhoods:   Traveling south, stop at Gliderport for the hang-gliding school in Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve . (Tip: Tandem rides offer amazing ocean views.) Avoid tourist-clogged Mission Beach and head instead to the coastal village of La Jolla , set amid pine trees, craggy cliffs, and sparkling tide pools. Visit the recently revamped Museum of Contemporary Art , then catch a Broadway musical at La Jolla Playhouse , founded by actor Gregory Peck in 1945.

Hang glider over beach in La Jolla, California.

Urban neighborhoods:   Historic Gaslamp Quarter , with its Victorian-style flickering streetlights, is the city’s nightlife hub. Dance to hip-hop and electronica at Bloom or soak up the views of the bay from Altitude Sky Lounge . Nearby, Little Italy   comprises 48 square blocks of outdoor restaurants, patio cafés, and wineries. Stop for a slice at Filippi’s Pizza Grotto (established in 1950) then head five minutes north to the famed Ballast Point Brewery , which has more than 25 beers on tap.

People sit around a foundation at the Piazza della Famiglia, a European-inspired plaza in San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood, at night.

Inland neighborhoods:   Historic neighborhoods east of downtown include Old Town , the first European settlement in California, where you can drop by the 19th-century adobe Casa de Estudillo . In nearby Mission Valley, explore California’s first church: the serene, whitewashed Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá . Hillcrest holds gay-friendly bars, restaurants, and boutiques, as well as The Center —the heart of San Diego’s LGTBQ+ community since 1971.

Getting around San Diego

By bus:   MTS operates bus routes throughout the city. Plan your trip and buy tickets at the MTS website or on the PRONTO app. Greyhound   and   Flixbus   offer regular daily services to San Diego from all major U.S. cities, including New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

By car:   With about 1,800 charging stations across the city, San Diego is one of the most EV-friendly destinations in the U.S. No matter what you drive, parking can be a challenge, so check Parkopedia for nearby lots and parking structures, and use ride-shares when possible.

By train:   Amtrak   connects San Diego with many U.S. cities. Pacific Surfliner runs north and south along the coast from Oakland to the Downtown San Diego Amtrak Station, with stops at San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles.

By trolley:   The bright-red, eco-friendly San Diego trolley crisscrosses through the city, connecting neighborhoods such as downtown, Old Town, and Mission Valley.

Know before you go

Languages: English is the official language, but many people speak Spanish as well.

Wildlife awareness:   Stingrays are ubiquitous in the summer months; remember to shuffle your feet through the sand when entering the ocean to warn them you are coming.

LGBTQ+:   San Diego has the 7th highest LGBTQ+ population in the U.S. In a 2023 report by financial news website 24/7 Wall St., California was ranked the most queer-friendly state in the country. Just north of Balboa Park,   Hillcrest is home to Rich’s , a celebrated gay club, and Hillcrest Brewing Company , which claims to be the world’s first gay brewery.

How to visit San Diego sustainably

Outdoors: San Diego was recently ranked the Greenest City in America . Cycling lanes are abundant; use the regional bike map to navigate. San Diego Natural History Museum offers a new native plant nature trail and a canyoneer-led hiking program with guided walks through desert, beach, or mountain wilderness.

Shopping:   In hip   North Park , browse along Main Street for locally made gifts, jewelry, and vintage clothing. For secondhand surfboards, try Bird’s Surf Shed   near Mission Bay.

Dining:   Visit restaurants under the Farm to Fork   banner. Members are committed to ethically sourced food and support local farmers and fishermen. Look for the summer 2024 opening of Michelin star chef Drew Deckman’s Watershed . The North Park restaurant will donate 1 percent of monthly revenue to sustainable farming projects.

What to read and watch

The House of Broken Angels , by Luis Alberto Urrea. This Mexican-American family saga explores issues surrounding immigration, identity, and loss in San Diego and across the border.

Mister Magic , by Kiersten White. The San Diegan horror writer serves up a creepy tale of 1990s child television stars who reunite to solve a cold case.

Veronica Mars , directed by Rob Thomas. San Diego stood in for the fictional Neptune, California, in this beachy noir TV series (and movie) starring Kristen Bell as a hardboiled, soft-hearted teenage sleuth.

Plan Your Visit to San Diego

San Diego visitors generally fall into three categories. Some prefer to “wing it” and figure out what they’ll do only after arriving. Others have a couple of “must see and do” activities but leave time to explore and experience new things. The final group is those who plan details down to the last minute of every day.

Here are some other ideas to help you get the most out of your stay.  How deep you go on planning your visit after we tell you about them is entirely up to you!

We assume you’re already familiar with the biggest attractions like the San Diego Zoo and Zoo Safari Park, Sea World, LEGOLAND,  the USS Midway Museum, and others.  But San Diego is much more than that.

Explore San Diego’s Neighborhoods.  Unlike many urban destinations, San Diego County spreads far and wide, covering more than 4,200 square miles.  That makes for an incredibly rich and diverse experience when visiting individual neighborhoods.  Beach close communities are hopping year-round, while small gems like South Park adjacent to Balboa Park are more earthy, with lots of unique shopping experiences.

La Jolla is among the most beautiful of all communities, with proximity to the coast and world-class shopping and dining.  The Gaslamp District is the heart and soul of San Diego nightlife, and is easy walking distance to PETCO Park and the waterfront.

Get Into the Outdoor Culture.  San Diego’s perfect weather, miles and miles of beaches,  protected bays, and unlimited recreation opportunities compel you to catch some sunshine and fresh air when you’re in town.  Swimming, surfing, kayaking, sunbathing, biking, jogging, hiking, boating, golfing, and dozens of other activities are easy and fun to enjoy.

Dine on World Class Cuisine.  San Diego is a melting pot of many cultures, and that continues to shape dining experiences imported from throughout the world.  You can opt for traditional fare or seek out more exotic ethnic foods at hundreds of locations.  Whether you’re heading to Little Italy for spaghetti and meatballs or to the beach for high-end seafood or killer fish tacos, San Diego is a laid-back destination, so you don’t have to worry much about “dressing for dinner.”

Adults also have a dazzling array of craft beers and local wines you can pair with your meal, or you can go straight to the source with tours at local breweries and nearby vineyards.

Morning Rundown: Trump lawyer backs away from absolute immunity argument, China warns against 'downward spiral' in U.S. relations, and key takeaways from the NFL draft

131 million in U.S. live in areas with unhealthy pollution levels, lung association finds

Image: People walk in Central Park as smoke from wildfires in Canada cause hazy conditions in New York on June 7, 2023.

Nearly 40% of people in the U.S. are living in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution and the country is backsliding on clean air progress as the effects of climate change intensify, according to a new report from the American Lung Association.

The organization’s report — its 25th annual analysis of the “State of the Air” in the country — found that between 2020 and 2022, 131 million people were living in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution. The figure increased by nearly 12 million since the last survey a year ago.

The report also found that people in the United States experienced more “very unhealthy” or “hazardous” air quality days than any time in the survey’s history.

Katherine Pruitt, the national senior director for clean air policy at the American Lung Association, said climate change is chipping away at decades of cleanup efforts made through the Clean Air Act, a federal law passed in 1963 to regulate air pollution and set air quality standards.

“The changes happening in our climate and with heat and drought, and especially wildfire, have started to undo some of that progress we’ve made,” Pruitt said. “It is distressing to find that so many people are living with air quality that threatens their health.”

Wildfires are a fast-growing pollution source that policymakers are struggling to address. Climate scientists expect wildfire smoke to increase in the future, as greenhouse gas emissions push temperatures higher. The lung association’s analysis comes to the same conclusion as peer-reviewed research published last year in the journal Nature . Marshall Burke, an author of that study, suggested that wildfire smoke has undone about 25% of the Clean Air Act’s progress.

“If we take some steps back and tell what the root cause is, it’s the burning of fossil fuels,” said Dr. Lisa Patel, a clinical associate professor who practices as a pediatrician at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health. “We don’t need to be in this situation. We have the technology, we have the federal investment to get on renewables. What we need now is the political will.”

Every year, the “State of the Air” report analyzes air quality data of the three previous years. The analysis focuses on ozone exposure and on short-term and year-round exposures to particle pollution. The report issues grades for each measure and then summarizes how many areas pass or fail for each grade. Nearly 44 million people now live in areas that failed at all three criteria, according to the report.

Small particles are a significant concern because they can penetrate into people’s lungs, circulate in the bloodstream and affect other organs.

These particles, which are merely a fraction of the size of a human hair, have been shown to raise risk for asthma, lung cancer, chronic lung diseases, preterm birth and pregnancy loss.

Patel, who is also the executive director of the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health, said she has noticed an uptick in preterm births during periods of heavy wildfire events and has begun to counsel parents about how heat and smoke are a risk factor during pregnancy.

“When we have weeks of poor air quality, we see more pregnant individuals coming in and delivering before 37 weeks,” Patel said, adding that parents often question whether their actions could have contributed to an early birth. “When they ask about risks for premature birth, I do say climate change. Both heat and wildfires are a risk factor. They’re not in your control.”

Additionally, Patel said she has noticed that patients in her pediatric clinic often complain of nasal infections, eye irritation and asthmatic exacerbations, among other ailments, when wildfire smoke events happen in California.

Pruitt said particle pollution concerns once centered on the industrial Midwest and the Northeast. But in this report, for the first time, all 25 of the cities with the most daily particle pollution were in the West. Most were in California.

“Early in our history, a lot of particle pollution was coming from coal-fired power plants and transportation sources and industrial processes,” Pruitt said. “As the Clean Air Act has cleaned those sources up, particle pollution problems in the eastern U.S. have gotten much less serious. But in the West, they’ve of course had the same access to regulations and cleanups, but they are also being gobsmacked by climate change and wildfire.”

Daniel Mendoza, an assistant professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Utah, said many communities in western states are dealing with acute, short-term pollution episodes rather than chronic exposures over a long period of time. Scientists are still trying to untangle how damaging wildfire episodes are in comparison to extended exposures from industrial sources.

“Not all bad air pollution is created equal,” Mendoza said.

Pollution from transportation and industrial sources could continue to decline if the Environmental Protection Agency is able to implement the more stringent standards it has proposed. The EPA proposed a rule last year that would require nearly all of the country’s coal and large gas plants to reduce or capture about 90% of their carbon dioxide emissions by 2038 .

This March, the agency implemented stricter rules to reduce tailpipe emissions from passenger vehicles . Another EPA policy, aimed at curbing nitrogen oxide pollution that travels across states , was challenged in the U.S. Supreme Court. In 2022, the Supreme Court limited the administration’s ability to use the Clean Air Act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The report has one bright spot: Ozone pollution has continued its dramatic improvement. About 2.4 million fewer people are living in areas with unhealthy ozone pollution in comparison to last year.

Wildfire smoke has worsened in the time since this analysis was complete: Americans in 2023 breathed in more wildfire smoke than any other year on record, the Stanford researchers found last year.

World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 and City of San Diego Announce Year-Long Program

Programming includes six signature events, a series of inspiring design stories, 300+ community initiatives, a cross-border public art project and more!

On January 31, 2024, World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 (WDC 2024) and the City of San Diego announced its year of programming for design-related events. The first cross-border designation in World Design Capital history, San Diego is the first U.S. city ever to receive the designation and Tijuana is the second city in Mexico to hold the title.

“We are thrilled to officially announce our year-long program of events and initiatives that have been created and led by community members from the San Diego Tijuana region, and are a reflection of the creative passion that exists here in the community,” said Mai Nguyen, Board Chair of WDC 2024 and Director of UC San Diego Design Lab. “WDC 2024 was made possible due to our passionate cross-border design community. Throughout the year, we will be supporting and presenting design-driven events that align with our mission to transform and elevate our region.”

The  San Diego Tourism Authority  (SDTA) is partnering with World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 (WDC), to promote the cross-border region as a premier design destination and support a year-long slate of innovative programming.  “The World Design Capital will spotlight our region’s art, architecture and intellect, elevate us as an international design destination, and inspire our community for years to come,” said Julie Coker, president and CEO of the San Diego Tourism Authority. World Design Capital programming will feature a series of public events, conferences, exhibitions, summits and celebrations, bringing together global leaders to exchange ideas and create opportunities to use design to solve some of the region’s most critical issues.

The calendar of events will include signature events in partnership with the World Design Organization, as well as community events that will help achieve program goals, demonstrate  cross-border collaboration and promote design thinking.

Signature Events

Throughout the year, WDC 2024 will present six signature events in partnership with the World Design Organization® across the San Diego Tijuana region featuring interactive design experiences for all. Signature events include the Community Celebration on February 28 at the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT); the World Design Festival powered by Tijuana Design Week happening May 1-5 in Tijuana; the World Design Experience powered by the Design Forward Alliance and San Diego Design Week happening September 18-25 in San Diego; the World Policy Conference powered by the City of San Diego and UC San Diego Design Lab taking place November 12-13 in San Diego; the World Design Network of Cities organized in partnership with the City of San Diego, the City of Tijuana, and the World Design Organization on November 15 in Tijuana; and the WDC 2024 Convocation Ceremony organized in partnership with the World Design Organization on November 16 at The Salk Institute.

World Design Spotlight

WDC 2024 will also be creating digital content capsules to share stories of design that shape the region. Curated by AIGA, the World Design Spotlight will highlight design-driven innovations, designers, design firms, design studios, and projects in the San Diego Tijuana region. Highlights include the Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT), Cross-Border Express (CBX), James Hubble / Ilan Lael Foundation, Qualcomm, Taylor Guitars, The Salk Institute, and The Stuart Collection at UCSD.

Temporary Art Installation

WDC 2024 has selected internationally recognized visual artist, Daniel Ruanova from Tijuana and full-service architecture and design agency Heleo, to create a temporary art installation titled "EXCHANGE Pavilion" that will come to life in the Plaza de Panama at Balboa Park and the Palacio Municipal de Tijuana. "EXCHANGE Pavilion" invites us to immerse ourselves in its physical and conceptual presence, contribute to its public memory and coexist with others who arrived along the way. “EXCHANGE Pavilion” will provoke dialogue, creativity, human connection, and the exchange of our collective experiences. A representation of the significance of WDC 2024 to the region, this installation will serve as a bridge, connecting people from various backgrounds, inspiring conversations, and fostering a sense of unity.

Community Initiatives

WDC 2024 will be endorsing 300+ community initiatives consisting of a diverse range of projects, events, exhibitions, activations, and more offering opportunities for active participation and engagement. The Community Programs will advance the mission of WDC 2024 to transform the region through the lens of design, curated and led by community members from San Diego and Tijuana.

“I’ve supported the World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana project from day one because of the economic benefits and cross-border collaboration that it will bring to our region,” said Councilmember Raul Campillo, who strongly advocated for $3 million for World Design Capital (WDC) in the FY2024 City of San Diego budget. “It’s an honor to help reveal more exciting details about the WDC San Diego Tijuana 2024 program, like the Balboa Park Pavilion and more than 300 community programs.”

The Prebys Foundation $1M Pledge

The Prebys Foundation is pledging an additional $1 million in matching funds to the World Design Capital. The Prebys Foundation is committed to fostering unity and growth within the cross-border communities, striving for a future that is inclusive, equitable, and vibrant. This means that for every dollar contributed to the WDC 2024, the Foundation will match it, effectively doubling the impact of each donation. This initiative is pivotal in promoting design excellence and urban policy, drawing investment and creative talent, fostering new partnerships, bolstering knowledge-driven economic growth, and enhancing the global reputation of the region as a premier travel destination. WDC 2024 is a program led and shaped by the community; we encourage everyone to engage with and support this matching challenge.

About World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024

The World Design Capital® (WDC) is designated every two years by the World Design Organization® (WDO) to recognize a city’s innovative and effective use of design to strengthen economic, social, cultural and environmental development. Through a year-long program of design-related events, WDC provides a platform to showcase best practices in design-led policy and innovation, increase civic engagement, and attract business and tourism. The selection of the San Diego Tijuana joint bid makes it the first cross-border World Design Capital in history. While the designation is for both cities as one connected community, San Diego is the first U.S. city ever to receive the designation. Tijuana is the second city in Mexico to hold the title, following Mexico City in 2018. WDC 2024 will host a series of events, exhibitions and summits including six signature events and supporting over 300 public events and initiatives that address the region’s most pressing challenges through design, and create a unified force for regional transformation. The region’s winning bid reflects the collective efforts of founding partners UC San Diego Design Lab , Design Forward Alliance , Burnham Center for Community Advancement , City of San Diego and City of Tijuana, and numerous community supporters.
