What they say about us

Samuel

Bruno

It was an incredible experience, the tends were private, with all the facilities we wanted. Zaid is an incredible person, who helped us every time we needed. The ubication is fantastic, we could enjoy the Wadi Rum desert and it's amazing sky. 100% recomendable if you want to enjoy the experience of spending the night in the middle of the desert. Thanks for all Zaid!

Edwin

We had a great time; all the staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was tidy, and the food was excellent. If you need to continue your journey after your stay, transportation will be arranged for you. Erg gezellig 😄

Michaela

The stay at the camp was easily the best out of our Jordan holiday. Everyone at the camp was super friendly and the jeep tour was amazing. The food was absolutely delicious. In the evening we sat around a fire and talked with other guests while drinking lots of delicious tea. The desert was so beautiful and quiet. Definitely recommend staying at Zaid's camp. And if you have time, stay for more than one night! I wish we could have stayed longer. It was the ultimate rest we needed after traveling around Jordan.

Hayley

Absolutely loved it here, easily one of the best places we’ve ever stayed! Zaid was super welcoming and friendly and the location was incredible - there are so many different camps to choose from but I think we picked the best. You couldn’t see another camp, it felt so secluded and peaceful and the view was amazing! The stars on the night were unreal🤩 We had a packed lunch and cooked dinner and both were great! The packed lunch had lots of snacks and the dinner was delicious. Tours were flexible and we did a 2.5 hour jeep tour and saw some amazing sights, our guide explained each one and told us the best photo spots! Definitely recommend staying here🙂

Peter

We stayed on a beautiful place in Wadi Rum, we made a great jeep tour and the dinner was outstanding

Lamyaa

A tester d’urgence !

Hediye

This camp site with beautiful designed tents were a best accommodation that we had in Jordan. Absolutely recommended. Hosts are so nice and they take care of everything you need. Zaid himself drove me to village just because I do not have phone signal and I needed to connect my family. Food cooked traditionally in the sand and was delicious. Camp fire and tea they offer is a great way to socialize with other guests. Also, the jeep tours in the desert are worth to have a best journey and memory in Wadi Rum desert. I love it. If I come to Wadi Rum again I will definitely stay here again!

Wafae

Esperienza unica e meravigliosa. Gli host sono molto amichevoli e simpatici. Ci sono diverse attività molto belle e il panorama è indescrivibile. La camera è pulitissima e come nelle foto, cibo meraviglioso.

Ambre

The camp is amazing, the tent we stayed in was very nice, looked exactly like the pictures. The cook, Samir, was adorable and made amazing food. We had a great stay from beginning to end!

Bedouin Camp

Description

Our Bedouin Camp

The camp lies 4 kilometers from Wadi Rum village, about a 20 minute drive, lying against red rocks in the heart of the protected desert, and surrounded by magnificent vistas on all sides of both incredible rock formations and wide open desert plains.

The camp is situated by a small hill that is the perfect location to witness spectacular sunrise and sunsets. The perfect place to meditate on the vast expanse that lies in front of you.

It’s simple, authentic, and comfortable - boasting colorful traditional tents made from goat hair. The camp is equipped with a kitchen, toilets, and hot water showers powered by solar energy.

Where You'll Sleep

Tents for Two or Group Tents

We have nine traditional Bedouin tents that can host a range of two to six people. These waterproof tents are furnished with single beds, including comfortable mattresses, blankets, pillows, and ceiling. lights.

If you would prefer to setup a bed outside to sleep under the stars, this can also be arranged. This is a great way to experience the starry night sky while still enjoying all of the comforts of camp.

Shared Facilities

Communal Tent

A large tent with carpets, incense, and a roaring fire serves as a communal area where we serve breakfast, dinner, and refreshments.

On warmer nights the fire is relocated to a fire-pit outside, surrounded by a wall to sit and watch the flames flicker in the desert darkness. The camp has electricity and limited wifi as well.

Shared Bathroom

The shared bathroom at the camp has Western toilets, with a cold and hot water shower powered by solar heating. We rely on water delivery to our camp, so the supply is limited. Please remember to bring your own towel!

How to Tour Wadi Rum and the Bedouin Camps of Jordan in 24 Hours

wadi rum bedouin camp tour

What do you see here?  Is that cloud of dust in the distance a NASA rover, wandering the barren grounds of Mars? Not quite…its an adventure awaiting travelers bold enough to break from the well trodden path.  A unique wonder of nature hidden in the expanses of the Arabian desert, nestled between war zones, ancient ruins, and millennia old cultures.  That tiny pickup truck in the distance, on a tour of Wadi Rum and the Bedouin Camp experience, is your gateway into harsh, remote, landscapes and otherworldly, one of a kind travel.  Welcome to the deserts of Wadi Rum

In the south of Jordan, near where Egypt, Israel, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia touch lies a vast, desolate expanse of desert more akin to Mars than earth.  Here, littered with red rocks towering into the sky and hills of sand as far as the eye can see, you will find the desert of Wadi Rum.

wadi rum bedouin camp tour

Before the times of borders in the Arabian desert, tribes of nomads,”Bedouin”, roamed the deserts following water and animals.  As borders were established and countries formed, these “Bedouin” tribesmen made the deserts of Wadi Rum their homes; a place where they now welcome you to a one of a kind desert experience.

Venturing to the deserts of Wadi Rum and seeing the landscape with your own eyes as you surf across the desert sands in a tiny 4×4 and then sleeping under the starry sky or in bedouin tents is a fantastic way to end a tour of the exotic Middle East before experiencing the calm and comforts of Aqaba, nestled next to the Red Sea.

“Wadi Rum” is an expansive portion of the Arabian desert in Southern Jordan – filled with never ending hills of sand and dotted with tower red cliffs in between.  The striking contrast it creates will leave anyone in awe.

Though there are several options for how to tour Wadi Rum (4×4, horse, camel, foot, etc.) all of the tours essentially show the same view of the desert at a different pace.  The different tour options make it possible to save money by taking your time on foot, or make a lightning fast day trip through the wadi possible by an exciting 4×4 trip.

Each tour either begins at the Wadi Rum visitor center or your respective desert camp or guest house.  From that start point, you’ll surf through the sands between towering cliffs and interesting rock formations.

Along the way you might even to view some ancient carvings and wander between Wadis

Finally, you’ll end the day with a beautiful desert sunset.

What is the Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp Experience?

If you opt to stay the night in the desert, I recommend staying in the desert for the Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp experience, instead of staying in a guest house in Rum Village.  At the Bedouin camp you will spend the night as a guest with the local Bedouin tribe in a traditional tent enjoying traditional cuisine.  If Arab culture is new and exotic for you, I highly recommend this experience and getting friendly with your hosts.  Unexpected upside to this experience – the sky.

wadi rum bedouin camp tour

Each Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum is nestled beneath a towering cliff and out of view of any other camps, and even farther from Rum village or any other civilization for miles around.

wadi rum bedouin camp tour

The Bedouin camps’ isolation rewards you with a completely dark sky…except for the stars.  Just after the twilight hours of dusk and before the moon rises, the Jordan desert sky is at its darkest and you’ll likely see more stars than you’ve ever witnessed in your life.

That night, you’ll fall to sleep early with the peaceful sound of nothing and sleep longer than you’ve slept in years…that, I promise.

Sorry, not many pictures  of the Wadi Rum sky by night.  I guess you’ll have to see for yourself…as you should…

Now, we tht have your appetite whetted for an adventure to the Arabian desert, let’s talk about how to get to Wadi Rum and make a tour happen on a tight schedule.

How to Tour Wadi Rum in 24 Hours or less

For the longer tour, 4×4 tour the desert and overnight stay in a wadi rum bedouin camp:.

  • Cruise in from Amman or Petra arriving around noon
  • Do a 4×4 tour (25JD) or hike through the deserts of Wadi Rum between the Mars like rock formations until sunset
  • Stay the night in a Bedouin camp (10JD-25JD) in the middle of the desert under the stars
  • In the morning,  hop a taxi out to Aqaba the following day (25JD), potentially taking the JETT bus back to Amman (11 JD)

Wadi Rum 4x4 Tours through desert and Bedouin camps

For the day tour of Wadi Rum (without an overnight stay) 4×4 tour and taxi on:

  • Ride in from Petra or Amman arriving around at the Wadi Rum Visitor Center around noon
  • Take a 4×4 tour (30JD) or hike through the desert of Wadi Rum between the rock formations (free)
  • Around 4:30 – 5:00 take a taxi down to Aqaba (25JD) potentially taking the last JETT bus from Aqaba to Amman leaves which leaves at 6PM

Wadi Rum Tour Options: 4×4, Foot, or Camel

The experience of Wadi Rum Protected Area is all about walking through sandy landscapes wandering between oddly red rock formations and scaling rocks that feel like they’re more Marsian than not.  The popular way to do this tour is by 4×4 truck, in which a local will drive you(insanely) over the sandy hills between the major rock formations. This will set you back 25JD-35JD if split between a group of four when booked in Wadi Rum.If you’re on a budget you can simply spend the day walking between rock formations.

The path for many Wadi Rum Tours via 4x4

If you’re concerned about having plans having locked in prior to arrival there are plenty of daytrip tours from Amman to Wadi Rum available, as well as daytrips from Aqaba to Wadi Rum , and multi-daytrips including both Wadi Rum and Petra .

Tour Wadi Rum by 4×4

For the 4x4tour , the best and most convenient option is to do the tour with your guesthouse or Bedouin camp for 30JD, as everyone in Wadi Rum offers a tour.  This way, pickup and dropoff will be conveniently where you’re staying. You should book your WadiRum accommodation ahead of time, so you can simply email your guesthouse or desert camp to ask about tours and prices.

The chariot for many Wadi Rum Tours via 4x4

If you won’t be staying the night, go to the rear of the visitor center (5km before Rum Village) and you’ll see an army of pickup trucks waiting for business.  Any of those drivers are up for hire, so chat around and take your pick. If you prefer to book in advance, several tour providers offer WadiRum 4×4 tour booking .

If you are interested in a guided tour of Wadi Rum but not by 4×4, most guesthouses and camps additionally offer hiking tours, horse tours, camel tours, and also half day (2 hour) tours if you will be short on time

Hike Wadi Rum by Foot

Though it may not be as varied and fast paced as a 4×4 tour, one can easily take one of many hikes from the visitor center to the surrounding rock formations, such as the Seven Pillars, to save money.  Yes, you’ll see less, but honestly after 2 hours cruising the desert in the back of a pickup, it all starts to look the same.  Still impressive in a way, but repetitive (like a Michael Bay trilogy??).  A hike through Wadi Rum is a great tour with a bit less adrenaline to consider if you’re on a budget or have more than one day to experience the area.

If you look at Maps.Me and search for the Wadi Rum visitor, you will see several hiking trails snaking away from the visitor center.  Most of these trails are flat and sandy, going directly between rock formations.

wadi rum bedouin camp tour

In the Maps.Me screenshot images above, you see the Wadi Rum visitor center (highlighted) as well as Jebel Makhras (Mount Makhras) which is part of the 7 pillars.  Additionally, you see several trails leading away from the visitor center.

Zoom out (in Maps.Me) and you’ll see the image below, showing the other 6 hills (the other 6 pillars) around Mount Makhrash, and your opportunity to hike between them.  If you do decide to hike solo,  PLEASE  read the warning below, take the necessary precautions, and  do not  make this hike if yo do not have the fitness level or experience.  The deserts of Jordan get ungodly hot and its not difficult to get lost on these sand dunes

wadi rum bedouin camp tour

BEWARE – IF YOU DECIDE TO HIKE make sure you’re up to the task, know the weather, and have the supplies.  During summer, this desert can get hot as hell (I almost mean that literally).  It may start out cool at 9AM but it can hit 40 degrees Celsius at noon.  So, if you haven’t hiked in a legit desert in the daytime (think Death Valley or Joshua Tree National Park) double check your plan before making this your first.  I would absolutely do it…but I grew up in the desert.  Yeah, I’m practically and American Bedouin.

Ensure to pack water (min. 2 liters) a phone with maps and a GPS, food, and sun protection.  Additionally consider bringing a portable charger and a small flashlight just in case.

Tour  Wadi Rum by Camel

As with anywhere in the Middle East, their is also the opportunity to tour Wadi Rum by the ubiquitous camel or horse.  If your urge to cruise via hump is strong, find your camel tour through your guest provider or advance reserve a camel tour of Wadi Rum via Trip Advisor to make the experience smoother and quicker.

Prearranged Day Tour of Wadi Rum

For those nervous about going it solo, fear not.  There are several daytour of Wadi Rum packages that can be prearranged, so that you’ll know your time frames and what will happen the entire time.  Everything from a 4×4 tour to a horse backor camel tour of the Wadi Rum desert are available.

Multi-day Tour of Wadi Rum from Amman

There are also several tour packages that combine Petra and Wadi Rum into a 3 Day tour leaving from WadiRum , which saves the issue of some interesting logistics (like having to hitchhike through Jordan the way I did).

Honestly, I love traveling solo, without a guide, and adventurously (or in a way where things can go wrong) but I absolutely think everyone should travel in whatever way their comfort level allows.  Travel in all forms is amazing. So, don’t be afraid to hop a tour through Amman,Petra, and Wadi Rum .  Any way that get’s you on the road is the best way.

Accommodation: Staying at a Wadi Rum Bedouin camp in the Arabian Desert

…for the view of the stars and the unforgettable experience….

While staying in Wadi Rum, you have three options for sleeping:

  • Staying at a guest house or hotel in Rum Village
  • Staying in a Luxury Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp in the Desert
  • Stay in a budget priced Wadi Rum Bedouin camp in the desert (I did this option and had a great experience)

I recommend staying in a Bedouin Camp for the night. The experience combined with the views of the desert by day and the stars by night are quite unreal and unique experience.  Waking up to walk out at sunrise and see the red rock towers “on fire” from the morning sunlight is indescribably beautiful.

The Experience of Staying in a Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp

Each one of the Bedouin camps of Wadi Rum is nestled beneath towering rocks reds standing like islands in the middle of the desert. With no lights in sight at night, in the empty desert, you can gaze at seemingly thousands of stars (unlike the guest houses located in the city) in away that truly makes Wadi Rum feel like Mars.

Most of these Bedouin desert camp experiences will include the option of a traditional (yet fancy) Bedouin style meal cooked over coals in a hole in the ground.  Expect lots of hummus, baba ganoush, grilled meats, and blackened veggies while you dine, seated on the floor or on cushions, in traditional Bedouin tent.

A Wadi Rum Camp and cooking experience

The accommodations in the Bedouin camps vary greatly…

..from traditional tents and sleeping mats under the stars (if the weather permits).  Simple yet comfy summer camp style tents, such as at the Arabian Nights Bedouin camp (pictured below)…

The Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp experience courtesy of Arabian Nights Bedouin Camp

..to luxurious yurts and futuristic living bubbles fit for Mars  costing hundreds of dollars a night.  Whichever option you choose, book in advance.  The good accommodations fill up quickly, and there is no way of visiting the camps to compare on arrival as your hosts will have to pick you up and drive you into the deserts to the camp

More luxurious Wadi Rum Accommodation

Getting from Amman to Wadi Rum and Petra to Wadi Rum

There are several options for getting to Wadi Rum, depending on whether you’re coming from Amman, Petra, or Aqaba…or your bus leaves you…

Hitchhiking from Amman to Wadi Rum to join a tour of wadi rum and the bedouin camp experience

The most logical path through Jordan is to start in Amman, travel to Petra (by bus), travel from Petra to Wadi Rum (by bus), travel from Wadi Rum to Aqaba (by taxi), and then return to Amman from Aqaba (bus). By doing this you will seethe major, irreplaceable highlights of Jordan – Amman, Petra, and Wadi Rum.

  • Getting from Petra to Wadi Rum (Early): Early Shuttle Option from Petra to Wadi Rum: Book a shuttle from your hotel in Petra, arranged through reception.  Note that these shuttles normally leave at 6:30AM and leave once per day (I learned this the hard way).  This is the common and best choice for non-package tourists as it will take you all of the way from Petra to Wadi Rum with no issues.
  • Getting from Petra to Aqaba to Wadi Rum(Late): Late Local Bus Option from Petra to Aqaba and taxi from Aqaba to Wadi Rum Village: A local bus leaves from the Petra city bus stations at several unscheduled times per day to Aqaba for 5JD.  Note that the bus leaves whenever filled, whenever that may be, so be prepared to wait. In Aqaba, hop a taxi to the village of Wadi Rum, for 25JD
  • Getting from Petra to Wadi Rum (Late) via shuttle plus hitchhiking: Late Local Bus to”Wadi Rum intersection” + hitchhiking: Take the local bus (5JD) as outlined above and inform the drive that you want to get out at the intersection of the main highway and the road to Wadi Rum – the local bus driver will know where this is.  At the intersection, cross the highway and post up the concrete bus station looking structure on the opposite side of the intersection where you’ll be dropped off.  This point is about 12km outside of the village of Wadi Rum and cars frequently pass through here on the way to Wadi Rum.

On this map, at the intersection of “Al-Tariq Al-Sahria” (written in Arabic) or “The Desert Road” is where you to get off.  The driver will let you off on the southbound lane (the road on the left).  You’ll cross over the two lanes and about 50 meters from the intersection you’ll find a small bus stop like structure. That is the best place to wait for a ride – and is visible in the map above if you zoom in a bit.

Avoid paying ridiculous fees for this ride.  While I was hitchhiking, the first car, a local Bedouin, stopped and asked for 20JD for the ride to Wadi Rum village even though he was going in the right direction.  The next car that came by immediately stopped and said hop in, also refusing any kind of compensation – so don’t feel obligated to pay anything if hitchhiking in the direction they’re going , and if you do pay then don’t pay too much.

Getting from Amman to Wadi Rum via Aqaba : To get from Amman to Wadi Rum in a single day, take the JETT Bus from Amman, from the Abdali JETT bus station, to Aqqaba. From Aqaba take a  25JD taxi ride from Aqaba to the Village of Wadi Rum where you will meet your accommodation host.

Note: If you wish to hitchhike from the intersection of Rum Road and “Tariq Al-Sahria” this is only possible via local buses as local bus drivers will stop wherever you need them to.  JETT bus drivers are required by law to only drop you off at the agreed upon station (Amman, Petra, or Aqaba)requiring you to get a taxi.  As such. Your best option for getting from Amman to Wadi Rum is via Aqaba with an additional taxi from Aqaba to Wadi Rum

How Much Does Wadi Rum Cost?

  • 4×4 Tour in Wadi Rum (Split by 4 people): 30JD  (~$43 USD)

  • Lunch cooked on atour: 10 JD (~$15 USD)

Wadi Rum Camp | Bedouin Camping in Jordan

Posted on 2023-04-24

Wadi Rum is one of the popular places to visit on a Jordan Itinerary and a Wadi Rum camp is something you should not miss when you visit Jordan. Whether it is the out of this world landscapes featured in movies like The Martian, or the desire to experience typical hospitality in the region, spending a night at a Wadi Rum Camp is one of the most amazing experiences to have when you visit Jordan.

Whether you want a traditional camel tent or a luxury mars tent, there are plenty of options in the desert. Read more for everything you need to know about desert camps, tours, camels and bedouins that call this place home.

Wadi Rum Camp | Camp in Wadi Rum - What you need to know about camping in Jordan desert on my Wadi Rum Blog

Where is Wadi Rum?

Wadi Rum is the Jordan desert in the south of the country. Driving from Amman to Wadi Rum takes about four hours. Aqaba, the southern port city to Wadi Rum is less than an hour’s drive. While the desert highway passes through this desert, access to Rum village and Al Disa village is by a side road off the highway.

On arrival, you will find a visitors centre, a police station and two villages made up of cement buildings and home to Wadi Rum bedouins, the only prominent residents of the area.

Wadi Rum Camp Information

There are dozens of camping choices in Wadi Rum. There are traditional goat hair tents with a basic bed and shared washroom facilities, there is cave camping and there are luxury domed tents allowing you to see the stars on a clear night. From basic to luxury there is EVERYTHING in between. Some camps you can drive into. Others you will be picked up at the visitors centre and taken by 4×4 into the desert.

Want to skip all of the planning and access my detailed Jordan Itinerary and Guide? I have been to Jordan several times and after being asked again and again for suggestions, not only did I build this website but I created an interactive PDF guide to help you plan the best trip to Jordan! It includes an interactive map, multiple itineraries for up to 10 days and as little as three days, and plenty of practical information about renting a car and driving in Jordan. Some camps have dance parties late into the night (these are awesome in my kids’ opinions) and others have quiet evenings, bonfires and tea. What you are looking for in a camping experience will dictate the best Wadi Rum bedouin camp for your visit.

Camps inside the Wadi Rum protected area will be more quiet, as loud music is not permitted.

I have stayed at both a typical camp for Arabs, and also a camp that caters to tourists. The main difference is that the camps that cater to the Arabs have limited speaking English staff. My favourite camp is called Rum Magic Camp , and is one of these camps that caters to Arabs. But do not get me wrong, there are always tourists there as well, and they do have staff that speak English.

Rum Magic camp offers excellent food, you can drive in, it has wifi (in the cafe area), offers a super fun dance party (my kids love it) in the evenings (this is sometimes only on Thursdays and Fridays as they also have guests who just common from Aqaba for dinner and entertainment). I have also been here and been the only guest. It made for a nice quiet trip where we explored the nearby sand dunes, watched the sunset, and were made a private meal by the staff.

Rum Magic camp has basic bathrooms (bring some of your own tissues) and showers, and basic tents, as well as a cement building option. Why not stay in a goat hair tent if you have the chance in my experience, but the choice is yours. they are also working on luxury tents with private showers and bathrooms. I am excited to see these finished and try them out!

Hasan Zawaideh camp Luxury Tent Wadi Rum Camp

The complete opposite to Rum Magic camp, is Hasan Zawaideh Camp . It always gets excellent reviews on Booking.com  and you can see my full review here . Mahmoud will ensure you have a great stay and their camp offers luxury tents, excellent food and they are happy to arrange any excursions that you may wish to take. Hasan Zawaideh camp is also drive in, but they are happy to pick you up at the visitor’s center if you arrive without a vehicle.

Types of Wadi Rum Camp Tents

Tent in Wadi Rum | Wadi Rum Camp | Wadi Rum Jordan | Wadi Rum the Martian

A goat hair tent is your basic choice when it comes to Wadi Rum tents. They are often arranged in rows, with connecting side walls and a zipper closed door. They offer beds with linens and they will have separate shared bathroom facilities.

Cement Style Room

These are also basic accommodation but with cement walls instead of tent walls. These are better if you are easily disturbed by noise. They have an actual door that closes, and basic beds.

Luxury Tents in Wadi Rum Jordan

Luxury Tents

Luxury tents are exactly what they sound like. Beautifully coloured walls inside a goat haired covered house. They usually have their own bathroom and shower and queen sized beds. Some camps also offer these for families or with single beds.

If you are looking for a luxury tent, they are abundant now in Wadi Rum. I personally enjoyed Hasan Zawaideh Camp but other popular ones are Sun City Camp , which is known for great service and Captains Camp .

Wadi Rum Cave Accommodation | Wadi Rum Luxury Camp

Cave Camping

Something that I recently saw at Captain’s Camp Wadi Rum is the option to sleep IN A CAVE. A LUXURY CAVE! Everything that you get in a luxury tent including a sky light and your own private camping experience. I am hoping to visit Captain’s Camp and try out this cave soon!

Mars Tents or Bubble Tents

These are luxury bubble tents that offer star gazing and a view of the desert from the comfort of your own room. Perfectly positioned for a view of the desert, these luxury tents also feature double or queen beds, air conditioning, and private washroom facilities. One of the popular camps offering this is Sun City Wadi Rum Camp. Note that these are not totally glass style and only offer a large viewing window of the desert. They do offer privacy.

If you are interested in a Martian tent while you visit Wadi Rum, check out Sun City Camp . This camp is popular with tourists and groups and should be booked in advance.

Wadi Rum Blog: What is Wadi Rum known for?

Wadi Rum a UNESCO World Heritage site and a popular eco-adventure destination for Jordanians and visitors to Jordan. It offers sandstone cliffs and mountains for trekkers and climbers as well as camel safaris from 1 hour to multi day rides. It is a frequent day-trip spot, but also popular for camping, as luxury camping spots and star gazing experiences are sought-after by tourists.

Rock Bridges Wadi Rum Jordan

Its Mars-like landscape is covered with red sand and its towering mountains reaching 1750m. Sometimes referred to as the Valley of the Moon, Wadi Rum’s landscape was the backdrop for the movie “the Martian” and was also used as the moon Jedha in StarWars Rogue One movie. It was also the backdrop of the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia.

The best way to explore is on a Wadi Rum Jeep Tour. These can be arranged on arrival from the Wadi Rum visitors centre, and prices start at JD35. If you are short on time and can only spend a few hours here, this is the best way to get a good taste of the desert. However, I highly suggest that everyone who visits should spend the night at a Wadi Rum bedouin camp

Camels in the Desert in Wadi Rum

T E Lawrence of Arabia spent a significant amount of time in Wadi Rum during the Arab Revolt during World War One.

The highlights of this amazing desert can be best accessed by a Jeep on a Wadi Rum Tour that can be arranged at the visitors centre (rates start at JD35).

  • Seven Pillars of Wisdom – visible from the Wadi Rum Visitors Centre
  • Lawrence’s Spring – beautiful views of the desert can be seen from Lawrence’s spring
  • Lawrence’s House – while famously known as where Lawrence of Arabia stayed while in Wadi Rum, it is not much more than rubble in the desert.
  • Anfashieh Inscriptions – carvings on the rocks depicting early caravans across the desert. These date back to the Nabatean and Thaumadic period (over 2000 years ago)
  • Umm Fruth Rock Bridge – a steep scramble up to this wadi rum rock bridge is worth it to see the desert in front of you, and to pose for a great photo!
  • Siq al-Khazali – this narrow canyon contains many Nabataean rock carvings of people and animals. It is worth a stop to walk into the small siq and look at the carvings up above you.

Nabatean Carvings in Wadi Rum

Rum Village and Al Disa Village

As a visitor to the Jordan desert, you probably will not notice that there are actually two villages in Wadi Rum. These villages are quite small, mostly one main road with a few local shops and a gas station. Inhabited by the local bedouin tribes, tourism in the desert is their main source of income. Many will drive 4×4 trucks, conduct camel treks, own bedouin camps or sell souvenirs. Other residents work in local shops or raise goats or chicken to support the village.

Wadi Rum village is accessed by passing the Wadi Rum visitor’s center.

Al Disa village turn off is before the Rum visitors centre (where you see the police checkpoint), but you need to register your arrival at the visitors centre, pay your JD5 for your entrance fee, before going back to the Al Disa turnoff.

While it may seem trivial to register your arrival in the desert, it is for your own safety. If something was to occur, the tourist police in Wadi Rum know which camp you are in and can provide any assistance if required. While I have never had any problems requiring the tourist police (expect trying to figure out how to renew my Jordan visitor visa), they are an important part of maintaining safety and security in the region should any guests of Jordan require assistance.

What to Expect – Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp Experience

Many camps will provide traditional bedouin meals and sweet bedouin tea. Your camp price will likely include dinner and breakfast, and many camps offer tea through the day and evening. This sweet, aromatic tea is kept hot by the fire and is served in small cups. If there is no fire, they will likely have it in a hot thermos. Still good, but not as good as by the fire.

Dinner will lily be a selection of salads, with rice and meat cooked in a “zarb.” A Zarb is an underground oven which has layers of meat and veggies cooked under the sand. Once cooked, the sand is shovelled away, the lid is removed and the meat is taken out and served on a large platter. It is so moist it mostly falls off the bone.

Make sure you bring some water into the camp, or most camps will have water, soft drinks and shisha for sale. You might also bring a few snacks if you like to snack between meals.

With all of your camp photos, check out these camping captions for your Instagram photos for sharing your memories with your friends and family!

Respectable Dress

Always dress modestly while in Wadi Rum. While the sun is hot, short shorts and tanks tops is considered disrespectful. Local bedouins will likely never say anything to you, but you should respect their culture and ensure your dress is modest while you are in Wadi Rum.

Wadi Rum Tours and Information

Wadi Rum Entrance fee for tourists is JD5 (If you have a Jordan Pass , your pass includes this fee)

Jeep Tours start at JD35

Rates for camping start at about JD20

Camel Safari’s start at JD20

These can be arranged on arrival at the visitors centre.

Getting to Wadi Rum

The Wadi Rum visitors centre is 30 kilometres off the desert highway. While it is not an area served by tourist transport or even a local bus, there is some information online about busses that may run once a day to the area. You can also take a local bus and get dropped off at the turnoff to Rum and make your way into the visitors centre. On arrival, there are a few souvenir shops , washrooms and an office where you pay your entry fees and can book tours.

Taxis from Aqaba to Wadi Rum cost about JD25

I do not have personal experience with taking the daily bus from Petra to Wadi Rum or Wadi Rum to Petra, but you can ask about it from your hotel. I have read online that it does exist but have no information on it. Jordanians are all very welcoming and helpful, it is not the kind of country where you will be given misleading information or poor information about how to do things. The biggest problem is sometimes their understanding of English, but in the hotels and tourist places, Jordanians english is excellent.

I prefer to rent a car from Amman ( about JD25 a day ) since I have two kids and it makes our travels much more comfortable and allows us to stop along the way. There is a lot more info on this on my post called Getting around in Jordan.

Wadi Rum Camps offer a variety of hiking options for guests. Consider a sunset hike and Jeep Tour

Wadi Rum Weather

The weather in Wadi Rum depends on the season. I have visited in March and it has been less than 5 C at night and quite cold. I have also been in April and it has been over 20C at night and hot! Ensure you pack layers, if you are visiting in the winter or early spring bring a warm jacket and do not be afraid to ask for extra blankets if you are sleeping in a goat hair tent (the only way to go in my opinion! you are camping!)

Bring a hat and sunglasses for your Wadi Rum tour as the sun can be very hot on the back of a 4×4 and after these tours happen in the middle of the day. Wear a hat and long sleeves for your camel trek as well. Read more about packing lists for Jordan here .

I have a question about the tours at Wadi Rum. I was looking at driving from Amman which would probably get me there in the early afternoon. Is it possible to book a jeep desert tour at that time? Most sites I’ve seen only seem to offer morning tours.

Hi Scott – yes you can book them on arrival at the visitors centre. There are always tours available.

I enjoyed reading your blog…. adventurous yet sensible and full of useful observations. Keep it up. 🙂

Wadi rum is my escape from life.. Great post

Im visiting this coming 8th next month..thank you so much for a very detailed info <3

have a great time! I am glad you found it helpful!

Wow, the luxury camps looks amazing. Sadly, I stayed in a budget option goat hair tent, but it was also great! Are you planning to come back to Wadi Rum anytime soon?

I love Rum! Hoping to be back in the spring! … And there is nothing wrong with the goat hair tents either!!

Dear Lindsay,

Thanks for the informative blog!

Where can i book the luxury Captain’s cave? Can’t seem to find anything online.

Let me check it out for you and see if I can find out!

I’m not sure why or what I was thinking (or wanting) but I saw the word rum and got super excited. Lol. That being said this looks totally cool too!!! Something about being in the dessert is awesome and peaceful. Probably really hot. The inside of that tent is incredible and honestly looks no different than a hotel.

I want to try staying in a luxury tent and a luxury cave. It is an experience that is now in my bucket list. Of course, Wadi Rum is in my list of places to go to as well!

It is my dream to camp at Wadi Rum! I was supposed to do it this year but have to put it on hold. It’d be amazing to see the stars at night out there.

awe thats too bad! I hope you make it there soon!

I was just talking to a friend about visiting Jordan and glamping at Wadi Rum is now on my wish list. I would love to say I stayed in a luxury cave. Those buildings are just so cool and look like they came straight out of Doctor Suess. This seems like a really cool experience all around.

This is an awesome experience! Those tents even looked so comfy, clean, and very relaxing. I also love the decoration of the tents and how they cook delicious food by using sand is amazing. Thank you for sharing this post! I really love what can Wadi Rum can offer for every visitors. I love all of the pictures.

This is great overview of the Wadi Rum camping experience! We did this a few years ago and it was a highlight of our Jordan trip…we didn’t see the caves, though – those are great! 😉 Thanks for sharing these awesome photos!

It is definitely a highlight for me too!!!

Beautiful!!! Deserts were never at the top of my list but the pictures are soooo awesome!!!

Personally I’d be in the Captain’s Cave – I love your enthusiasm for the goat hair tents but I’m just that bit beyond basic camping these days!

I love the pics of your kids in the desert though – my own parents travelled a lot when I was young and this takes me back

Great information as we have been thinking of visiting Jordan. We were aware of Wadi Rum because of the Lawrence of Arabia connection and the Jeep Tour sounds a good way of exploring the area. We fancy staying in the “Luxury Cave” too.

the caves look so fun! I’m hoping I can stay there next time I visit!

WADI RUM BEDOUIN CAMP

Located in Southern Jordan, the Wadi Rum Protected Area is today one of the biggest attractions in the country, and for good reason. Wadi Rum’s impressive array of both natural and cultural features led to it being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 and a must-see site for travelers in the region.

Wadi Rum is best known for its iconic geological features. Most visitors to Wadi Rum are awed by the size of the sandstone cliffs and the width of the valleys, known as wadis. The landforms in the desert are incredibly diverse ranging from large sand dunes to steep, colorful cliffs, to narrow canyons, to enormous honeycomb weathering patterns. Throughout the day, Wadi Rum changes its looks as the sun accentuates different colors and features..

wadi rum bedouin camp tour

People have been passing through Wadi Rum for millennia and it is still possible to observe some of what they left behind. Ancient inscriptions and petroglyphs can be found throughout the Protected Area dating back more than 12,000 years. You can also stop by many water catchment systems which people relied upon to survive in this harsh environment for thousands of years.

Today, most Bedouin people live in the Rum Village however some remain out in the desert, committed to keeping to the traditional way of life..

wadi rum bedouin camp tour

Although many different groups of people have passed through Wadi Rum, the most well-known person today may be T.E. Lawrence, better known as “Lawrence of Arabia.” Lawrence often wrote of Wadi Rum in his writings about his time here during the Arab Revolt in the early twentieth century. Wadi Rum’s immense landscapes became well known to the world following the 1962 film, ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ which was shot in Wadi Rum. Due to its landscapes, Hollywood films continue to be filmed in Wadi Rum to this day including “The Martian,” filmed here in 2015.

Today, Wadi Rum offers tourists a variety of phenomenal and diverse ways to explore the desert. The size of the desert leads to many visitors electing to explore the area in a jeep, moving easily from site to site. Other guests prefer to experience Wadi Rum on camelback which, prior to the invention of motorized vehicles, was the preferred means of getting around the desert for thousands of years.

Active travelers often seek out many of the fantastic hiking, scrambling, and climbing opportunities presented by Wadi Rum’s sandstone and granite mountains. Finally, a trip to Wadi Rum is not complete without spending a night in a desert camp. The clear desert skies accompanied by the near complete silence always leave a long-lasting impression on our guests…
