willie nelson outlaw tour 2022 lineup

Willie Nelson’s traveling Outlaw Fest will once again hit the road in 2022 with 19 dates all across the eastern United States, and with an expanded and revolving list of openers that will include some really cool names for amphitheater shows. Chris Stapleton, The Avett Brothers, ZZ Top, and Gov’T Mule could probably sell out any one of these sheds themselves. Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Billy Strings, and Brothers Osborne would be right behind them. Add surging up-and-comers like Zach Bryan, Allison Russell, Charley Crockett, and War & Treaty, let alone more established names such as Steve Earle and Larkin Poe, and each one of these dates really is like a mini festival. “Our annual Outlaw Music Festival Tour has grown to become this incredible family of artists that deliver must-see performances every night,” says Keith Wortman, Co-Founder of the Outlaw Music Festival Tour, which is an extension of Blackbird Presents. “We are honored to present these once in a lifetime lineups all over the country.” And most importantly of course, it gives you the opportunity to see Willie Nelson, which you should never pass up, and lately that has also included accompaniment by his sons Lukas Nelson of Promise of the Real, and Micah Nelson, who will also be playing with his band Particle Kid on select dates. “The Outlaw Music Festival Tour has always been about family and friends coming together for a great day of music and fun, and with the amazing group of artists joining us, this year promises to be our most special Outlaw Tour to date. I just can’t wait to get back on the road again,” says Willie Nelson. Tickets on sale on March 25th.

I’d love to see Billy on stage with Willy.

' src=

The label “Outlaw” has lost it’s edge and meaning. It’s like a cutesy novelty sign at Cracker Barrel now. The majority of these bands willingly carry water for Big Pharma and Big Government.

' src=

Waylon did commercials for Coca Cola, and for Sunbeam Brand Bread (whatever that was), so maybe the word “Outlaw” never had an edge, hoss.

OR….the original Outlaws lost their edge in old age.

' src=

Especially that Marxist twat Steve Earle. Would love to see Billy tho

People can believe what they want to believe, but I have to give Steve Earl credit because he softened his stance and realized that he needs to get along with his neighbors. Granted where he lives is overwhelmingly right-leaning.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Steve Earle playing at The Walmart AMP is very interesting.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Let me ask, what do you consider the old age ?

' data-tf-not-load src=

We’ve done this since exercise for the past 5 years everytime the Outlaw Fest lineup gets announced. Outlaw just means to not be restricted to one genre.

I was going to comment in the Dolly Parton rock in roll HOF articles that you bet Willie deserves to be enshrined. He wrote some of the best pop standards – Crazy, Nightlife, Funny How Time Slips Away – won Grammys in the Pop, Jazz, and Country fields and in the mid 70s when he was touring with the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan, the Family Band resembled more of a Jam Band (go listen to Willie and Family Live 78). Look at the rock artists on this tour.

Before Willie convinced Waylon to move to Austin, Waylon was a folky pop artist. I’m not a fan of any of his pre Austin albums.

Outlaw means to not be restricted to one genre or be constrained to any label or the Nashville machine.

I love this tour! We are targeting 3 dates this year. We tried 3 last year and just like Sturgill’s vocal chords, we didn’t make it to Charolette. We are spreading out the dates this year July, August, and September.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I think he lives in Brooklyn no?

He moved back to Tennessee in 2020.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Did the “original outlaws”, as you call them, willing NOT “carry water for Big Pharma and Big Government”? It seems odd that you would use views on “Big Pharma” and “Big Government” as a metric to determine “outlaw” status re country music.

' data-tf-not-load src=

No more political-oriented comments on this thread.

Goodness, can’t even announce some tour dates without this bullshit.

' data-tf-not-load src=

The folks triggered by Jason Isbell at least appear to be refraining from his using his name as a jump off point to get political.

Can’t you enjoy music for what it is, every time you pop an Advil than talk about big pharma. This world was so much better when your “feelings” didn’t get in the way of your brain.

' data-tf-not-load src=

meh….nothing to get overly excited about here.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Great discussion here! Sad to see Willie has nothing on the west coast!

' data-tf-not-load src=

Should change the name to Hippie Fest. The one with Billy Strings in Saratoga is going to be a Phish show doubt. Ain’t nothing Outlaw about that lineup. Would love to see a Willie and ZZ Top show, that would be special.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Too late: ZZ Top died when Dusty took his last breath. Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard with substitute roadie beard guy guesting on bass is not ZZ, it’s a xeroxed copy. I don’t fault Billy and Frank for needing to continue doing what they do, but it just isn’t ZZ Top without the Dust. RIP.

' data-tf-not-load src=

They should’ve asked Fred Turner to join them as Turner N Top considering at one point ZZ Top and Bachman Turner Overdrive were under the same management team stateside (hence the line in the lyric of the Bachman-Turner Overdrive song “Take it like a Man” ’cause ZZ ain’t his only band” refering to ZZ Top being under the managememt as BTO). If Turner wasn’t available Geddy Lee would’ve been another good replacement given he can rock out to their brand of Rock N Roll given how Rush’s first album went

' data-tf-not-load src=

No Western swing wheres ray benson ? Where’s the great Ian Tyson I’d see Chris or the Avenetts any time the rest Not so much

Willie Nelson Announces Outlaw Music Festival Tour, Featuring a Rotating Lineup

Willie Nelson just can't wait to be on the road again. The 88-year-old — who shows no signs of retiring any time soon — will embark on the 2022 Outlaw Music Festival Tour this summer, joined by family and friends.

The 19-date trek will include a rotating lineup of other artists popping in to take the stage with Nelson. Chris Stapleton, Brothers Osborne and ZZ Top are highlights on a tour that kicks off June 24 and will wrap on Sep. 23.

“The Outlaw Music Festival Tour has always been about family and friends coming together for a great day of music and fun, and with the amazing group of artists joining us, this year promises to be our most special Outlaw Tour to date. I just can’t wait to get back on the road again,” Nelson says. He'll be joined by his Family Band minus one member, sister Bobbie, who died earlier this month.

Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Brittney Spencer, the Avett Brothers, Billy Strings, Gov't Mule, Zach Bryan, Steve Earl & the Dukes, Allison Russell, Charley Crocket, Larkin Poe and Particle Kid will all be part of the Outlaw Music Festival Tour in some capacity.

The Outlaw Music Festival started after a sold-out show in Scranton, Pa., in 2016. After the show's success, a tour was developed to bring that same atmosphere to the rest of the nation. Eric Church, Luke Combs, Sheryl Crow, Bob Dylan and Bonnie Raitt are some of the acts who have jumped on the tour over the years.

Tickets for the tour go on sale Friday, March 25 at 10AM local time.

Willie Nelson ’s Outlaw Music Festival Tour rides again in 2023. And this time, it’s a dual celebration: not only of music that colors outside the lines, but of its headliner’s 90th birthday . Nelson turns 90 on April 29.

Kicking off June 23, in Somerset, Wisconsin, the Outlaw Tour runs into October, each with Nelson in the top slot and a rotating cast of artists in support. The first show features Robert Plant & Alison Krauss , Trampled by Turtles, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, and Particle Kid, the band fronted by Nelson’s son Micah. Other artists on various shows include the Avett Brothers , John Fogerty, Whiskey Myers, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Kurt Vile, Kathleen Edwards, and Margo Price .

Bob Weir and Wolf Bros. join the tour for select dates in September, along with Los Lobos, Elizabeth Cook, String Cheese Incident, and Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs. The tour is currently slated to wrap up Oct. 15 in Pelham, Alabama.

Tickets for the tour , produced by Blackbird Presents and Live Nation, go on sale Friday, March 17, at 10 a.m. local time via the tour’s website .

With a seven-decade career, Willie Nelson has earned every conceivable award as a musician and amassed reputable credentials as an author, actor, and activist. He continues to thrive as a relevant and progressive musical and cultural force.

In recent years, he has delivered more than a dozen new albums, released a Top 10  New York Times’  bestsellers book, again headlined Farm Aid (an event he co-founded in 1985) and his annual Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic, been honored by the Library of Congress with their Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, received his 5th degree black belt in Gong Kwon Yu Sul, headlined the annual  Luck Reunion  food and music festival during SXSW, launched his cannabis companies Willie’s Reserve and Willie’s Remedy, and graced the covers of  Rolling Stone  and  AARP The Magazine .

Nelson started this decade by releasing four albums of newly recorded music— First Rose of Spring  (2020),  That’s Life  (2021),  The Willie Nelson Family  (2021), and  A Beautiful Time  (2022, GRAMMY Award winner for Best Country Album)—and three books— Me and Sister Bobbie: True Tales of The Family Band  (2020),  Willie Nelson’s Letters to America  (2021), and  Me and Paul: Untold Tale of a Fabled Friendship  (2022). Throughout 2023, Willie celebrates his 90th birthday with multiple projects and events including a two-night star-studded concert,  Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 , that took place in April at the famed Hollywood Bowl, and released as a feature film in June.

The year began with the debut of “Wille Nelson & Family,” a new five-part film documentary series directed by Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival as well as the release of a new album,  I Don’t Know a Thing About Love ,  which features 10 performances that pay tribute to American songwriter Harlan Howard. From June to October, Nelson headlines the annual  Outlaw Music Festival Tour .

In the Fall, two new releases debut: an album,  Bluegrass  (with newly recorded studio performances of 12 Willie Nelson-penned classics showcasing Willie with a bluegrass ensemble released September 15), and a new book,  Energy Follows Thought  (with stories behind the lyrics of 160 of his favorite songs, along with never-before-seen photos and ephemera coming on October 31). And on November 3, Nelson will be inducted into  The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame . These creative endeavors as well as new songs and performances that add to his classic catalog, find Willie Nelson rolling at an artistic peak, writing and singing and playing with the seasoned wit and wisdom that comes from the road.

Ringo Starr addresses the crowd.

Over 60 years have passed since The Beatles’ historic Ed Sullivan Show performance in February 1964.

Still, at 83 years young, Sir Ringo Starr shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

In addition to releasing the four-song EP “Crooked Boy” on April 20, the former Beatle just announced a fall 2024 North American tour with his All Starr Band which includes Edgar Winter, Colin Hay from Men At Work and  Toto  singer Steve Lukather among others.

The eight-show jaunt wraps at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

Prior to the tour, Starr and co. will put on a brief spring Las Vegas residency with a few West Coast gigs in California and Texas sprinkled in for good measure.

For fans that can’t wait to sing along with Starr to “Yellow Submarine,” “Octopus’s Garden,” “With A Little Help From My Friends” and so many timeless classic hits live, tickets for all shows can be yours as soon as today.

Although inventory for the newly announced tour dates aren’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 26, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Ringo Starr set list

With way more than a half century’s worth of music under his belt, it’s likely not easy for Starr to compile a set list with such a large catalog.

Ringo Starr new music

Even at his advanced age, Ringo is still doing the dang thing and putting in work.

In October 2022, the former Fab Four drummer dropped the  four-song “EP3”  with his All-Starr Band.

Composed of feel-good anthems and sing-a-longs, somehow the lad from Liverpool is still bringing the goods.

Ultimate Classic Rock  called the short offering “genuine and infectious.”

You can listen to the four tracks here .

In 2023, he released three singles including a new version of “Let It Be” with Dolly Parton and Paul McCartney.

Next up, he’s putting out his “Crooked Boy” EP. The rock-y lead single “February Sky” shows Starr’s memorable voice sounds just as potent as it did back in his Beatles days.

All Starr Band members

Starr’s All Starrs are a veritable who’s who of classic rock legends.

Here’s who you can expect to see onstage with Ringo and the guys when you see them live this spring and summer.

Colin Hay  might look and sound familiar. In addition to playing with Ringo, he also fronted the popular group Men At Work.

Edgar Winter  is, yes, the Edgar Winter from the famous Edgar Winter Group. He’s most well known for singing and playing keyboards in his group.

Steve Lukather  did a little bit of everything when he played with Toto. Most notably, he served as the “Hold The Line” group’s singer and guitarist.

Gregg Bissonette  drums. He also gets around. You may have seen him and his kit onstage with Spinal Tap, The David Lee Roth Band or Electric Light Orchestra.

Hamish Stuart  was the bassist for the Average White Band. He also played alongside the Paul McCartney Band.

Warren Ham  has played multiple instruments for multiple iconic classic rock outfits including Kansas, Toto. He’s also jammed on tour with Donna Summer and Olivia Newton-John.

The Many Odd Jobs Of Willie Nelson

willie nelson outlaw tour 2022 lineup

I’m a firm believer that our early jobs shape our worldview much more than we give it credit for.

The experience of seeing stores from the other side of the cash register, pouring instead of ordering beers, picking orders and packing boxes, and whatever other random thing you did for cash while young sticks with you long into your life, and I believe for the better. It’s easiest to see this when you go out to eat with someone who never worked in a restaurant and they treat the server like a servant…

While we may look at the end result of celebrities and assume they’ve always been in the higher echelons of society (and let’s be honest, there’s more than a few nepo-babies out there riding the wave of good fortune), there’s a solid chance that the names we now hold in high regard at one point or another were themselves working some strange job to pay the bills.

In the country music world, I’m sure I can pick an artist out of a hat and find a ton of surprising things they’ve done, but one who really seems to have done a little bit of everything is Willie Nelson.

The proud Texan moved around a bit when he was a kid, and while he always had dreams of making it in music, he was far from an overnight success and struggled his way up the ladder until he just so happened to run into Patsy Cline’s husband at Tootsies one night and the rest, as they say, is history.

But before Shotgun Willie released  Red Headed Stranger  and became the living country music legend that he is, he was just a no-namer floating around trying to rub a few pennies together.

In no particular order, here’s some of the odd jobs Willie Nelson took over the years to support himself while making music.

Bible Salesman

If the words “Willie Nelson” and “Bible” ring a bell, it may because he was known to shoot a few copies of the Good Book while on tour. You can read all about that story here .

Cotton Picker

During hot Arkansas summers of the early 1930’s, the Nelson family would bolster the family income by heading out to the fields and picking cotton. While he was forced to do it a bit, Willie hated it and soon took jobs performing in local honky tonks to earn his share for the family.

Door to Door Vacuum Salesman

Imagine opening your front door to a suave (and probably stoned) Willie Nelson with a brand new Hoover in hand… I’d have bought one for sure and if my wife was home alone when he came knocking, well I may have come home to an empty house with a note saying she ran off with him.

Saddle Maker

Can’t be a cowboy without a horse and you can’t ride a horse without a saddle. Shoutout to Willie for keeping the gunslingers seated.

The most unacclaimed, but important, role in a restaurant. Most of the time it’s some underpaid and overworked high school kid, but someone’s got to make sure the glasses, plates, and silverware are clean and available.

Autohouse Partsman

Need a new head gasket, fan belt, control arm, or U-joint? Willie had you covered after dropping out of Baylor University in 1956.

Nightclub Bouncer

Willie may not be the biggest man on the planet, but don’t let his 5’6″ height fool you. He has 5 different blackbelts, including in taekwondo and GongKwon Yusul , so you probably won’t even know what hit you before you’re getting dragged out the back after causing trouble at one of Willie’s bars…

Disc Jockey

While it may be odd to think of today, back in the day it was actually somewhat common for aspiring artists to start working with a radio station in hopes of being discovered. Willie took his first disc jockey job in Pleasanton, Texas with almost no experience but wound up working for numerous stations in the Lone Star State and Pacific Northwest.

Sunday School Teacher

Country star by night, man of God by day.

While he was DJing in Fort Worth, Nelson found another way to earn money by teaching Sunday School to the local children. Religion was a large part of his childhood and the first songs he learned to play were Gospel songs, so while it may not jive with his “outlaw” persona, it makes a lot of sense in the context of his early life.

Tree Trimmer

Willie was actually a tree trimmer at two different points in his life. The first was in high school and the second was after dropping out of Baylor. I’m sure there’s a joke here about “trees” and “being high”, but I’ll let you come up with one on your own…

Relief Phone Operator

Of all his odd jobs, this is probably the one that drove him to the green stuff. Hours on end answering phone calls, making connections, potentially answering questions from the unhinged public, no wonder he wanted something to knock off the edge…

Pawn Shop Employee

The sheer number of characters one can meet working at a pawn shop had to lead to more than a few ideas for songs, but I can’t see Willie being a hardliner on price, which may be why he didn’t stick with it for that long.

Sales Manager for Encyclopedia Americana

Looks like Willie did such a good job selling vacuums and bibles that the first general encyclopedia to be published in North America wanted him leading a sales team. Not going to lie, I miss going to someone’s house and them having an encyclopedia set on the shelf. Sure, the internet is way better, but flipping one of those bad boys open and learning about some random piece of history was a truly great experience.

Guitar Instructor

Like DJing, this one makes sense. Why not teach people a few chords for extra cash, how hard can it be?

Okay, I play guitar a bit myself and absolutely hate when someone asks me to teach them, so kudos to him for being willing to do it.

Beyoncé's 'cowboy carter' is a portrait of the artist getting joyously weird.

Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter has ignited discourse about the place of Black musicians in country music. But it's also evidence of its creator's desire to break genre walls by following her most eccentric impulses.

This essay first appeared in the NPR Music newsletter. Sign up for early access to articles like this one, Tiny Desk exclusives, listening recommendations and more.

After two months of anticipation, Cowboy Carter has been out in the world for nearly a fortnight, and the discourse is thick as sawdust on a honky-tonk floor. Beyoncé's spangled opus, as lengthy and florid as a Sergio Leone classic — it really could have been called The Good, the Bey and the Ugly -- has generated more think pieces than any pop phenomenon since her friendly rival Taylor's Eras tour.

I've kept track of the coverage of Cowboy Carter and it's, well, something. Actually it's everything, ranging from paeans to (not too many) pans . Not weighing in hasn't been an option for most music writers, who have spilled tons of ink documenting the album's backstory, tracing its references, and examining its work of legacy building. What could I add to the discourse? Well, this: Whether it's considered a champion's walk, an overlong stumble, a powerful political gesture or a highly personal cri de couer — one thing Cowboy Carter is, undeniably even if no one has said it, is weird. And that's a wonderful thing.

10 takeaways from Beyoncé's new album, 'Cowboy Carter'

On 'Cowboy Carter,' Beyoncé's country is as broad as the public she serves

Album Review

On 'cowboy carter,' beyoncé's country is as broad as the public she serves.

Not that Beyoncé herself would ever admit to her own eccentricity. She's declared herself a diligent student of the genre she sought to revise, and many of the touchstones on this massive grab bag of ballads and bangers check the boxes of cultural intervention. She features Dolly and Willie; shows us her boots, brand-name jeans and whiskey bottle; includes a murder ballad and her perspective on that ultimate country emblem, the American flag. (She sees it as red: blood, Alabama clay, indigenous people.)

Her inclusion of the undersung Black Grand Ole Opry pioneer Linda Martell as a collaborator nods to efforts to rectify historical omissions that have been going on in and around Nashville for years — shoutout to the Black Opry crew, to artist and radio host Rissi Palmer and to Martell's granddaughter, who continues to crowd-fund a documentary that Beyoncé really should just finance.

How Black women reclaimed country and Americana music in 2021

Best Music Of 2021

How black women reclaimed country and americana music in 2021.

But the way she assembles these hardly unique elements is startling. Sidestepping either a conventional foray into country's traditional sounds or a risk-averse pop approach that would just use those elements as window-dressing, she and her dozens of collaborators assemble a cosmic omnibus of reference points while drilling down on her long-standing obsessions. While it's correct to call this album an epic and a strong political statement, it's an idiosyncratic one, more akin to Jim Jarmusch's off-kilter visions of American heritage — especially Mystery Train -- than, say, Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon .

It may seem off to identify eccentricity in a project that includes radio-ready Miley Cyrus and Post Malone collabs, and which was quickly endorsed by none other than the Vice President. Yet the first thing I thought of when I sat down to listen to Cowboy Carter was an album from 1967 that's beloved by many rock cognoscenti for its very peculiarness. Van Dyke Parks 's Song Cycle was the first solo album by the noted composer, arranger and producer. It is a shambling, sunnily psychedelic portrait of California living from the perspective of a transplanted white East Coaster with Southern roots. (Parks was born in Mississippi but grew up in Princeton singing in a boys' choir.)

Rich with strings and gorgeous melodies and rife with punnily poetical lines like, "Nowadays a Yankee dread not take his time to wend to sea" in a song about Parks's own experience trying to make it within the L.A. music biz hustle, no less, Song Cycle features Parks's birdlike warble, and by birdlike, I don't mean Beyoncé's operatic forays on new songs like "DAUGHTER" or "FLAMENCO," but Tweety Bird or the Peanuts ' Woodstock. Parks made the unfinished psychedelic masterpiece Smile with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and later worked with 21st-century visionaries Joanna Newsom and Gaby Moreno, among others. But Song Cycle is his strange baby. Though it's a rich work that offers real insight into the melting late 1960s American West Coast dream, Song Cycle is not for everyone. Parks experimented joyfully with song structure, sound effects and lyricism, painting a floating world that requires time and sympathy to comprehend.

Cowboy Carter sounds absolutely nothing like Song Cycle , yet I thought about the latter as I sunk into the non-linear, fragmentary experience of listening to it. I appreciate how Beyoncé sticks to her guns throughout, just as Parks maintained his whimsicality and dreaminess. Stacked harmonies do here what strings do on Song Cycle , lending grandeur to the opening "American Requiem" and tenderness to the ballads "MY ROSE" and "FLAMENCO" (the latter pairs them artfully with Andalusian hand-claps); yet those vocals also set a kind of Broadway stage for the songs, rendering them winsomely surreal. The album's employment of banjo and pedal steel signify country, sure, but they're used in unusual ways, as Parks uses accordion and balalaika. The distortions are highly individualistic, nothing like what current country sounds like. (Exception: that Post Malone duet, "LEVII'S JEANS.") Same with the roots references. The interlude "OH LOUISIANA" speeds up a Chuck Berry vocal to turn that rock and roll founder into helium. On the tour de force Tina Turner tribute "YA YA," Beyoncé begins with a spoken exchange with her background singers that calls back to her campy turn in Austin Powers in Goldmember as well as to Southern rap's most glorious weirdo breakthrough, Outkast's "Hey Ya!" Sure, this is historical work, but it's hardly textbook.

These tracks stand alongside others in a sprawl of concepts, tempos and tones until Cowboy Carter turns into a full-on megamix, its final four tracks returning to the dance party of Renaissance , abruptly concluded with a literal showstopper, the Broadway-ready "AMEN." The album is immersive, but it's a jerky, bucking rodeo ride, not a narrative that lends itself to easy absorption. And through it all Beyoncé bends country and blues tropes — those two genres are inseparable, something Cowboy Carter acknowledges — to the themes she can never abandon: the perils of attempted monogamy, the joy and terror involved in mothering and her own determination to be great, an ambition that she views as a responsibility more than a privilege.

Concept albums can be relatively straightforward, like Willie Nelson's classic Red Headed Stranger , but often they do come out ornate and leaky as their makers dump all of their ideas within the frame. Beyoncé nods sonically to a few that came after Song Cycle . At certain points, Sly and the Family Stone's murky funk on There's a Riot Goin' On comes to mind. Michael Jackson never made a full-on concept album, but that tarnished legend requires mention because Beyoncé's massive ambition rivals his more than anyone's. (Maybe Madonna's; she did make a concept record, Erotica . Or that soundtrack-maker Prince's.)

More recent touchstones include the high-concept forays of Janelle Monaé, whose " Tightrope " seems as much a touchstone for "YA YA" as does Tina Turner's shimmy, and the efforts of two of her collaborators on Cowboy Carter . Raphael Saadiq, who co-produced several tracks, released a similarly massive and emotionally affecting concept album , Jimmy Lee , in 2019. And the Virginia-born multihyphenate Shaboozie, a visionary character whom Beyoncé has apparently recognized as a kindred soul, paid tribute to the landscapes and culture of his native state on his own 2022 disquisition on the same themes as Cowboy Carter . Its title? Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die .

Beyoncé is getting played on country radio. Could her success help other Black women?

Beyoncé is getting played on country radio. Could her success help other Black women?

When I associate Cowboy Carter with these equally adventurous and strange concept albums and the outsiders who made them, I don't mean to reduce the impact of her work or her centrality as an era-defining artist. Instead, I'm trying to free this fun and unfettered music from the burden of predefined significance. Beyoncé has, by her own will as well as her fans's needs, become what Doreen St. Felix calls an "übermatriarch," not only a biological mother but the nurturing, burdened mother of all of her faithful — and of Black America, a role she inherited and claimed from the equally eccentric and more reluctantly ennobled Aretha Franklin. The seriousness of her responsibilities has earned her a lot: millions nearing billions of dollars, a place among heads of state and a fan base that strikes fear in the hearts of naysayers. But for an artist, such success ultimately confines. Only a few have been able to remain playful and light-footed as their public images have hardened into marble.

Two such artists, as it happens, are ones Beyoncé directly takes on in Cowboy Carter : The Beatles, whose members never stopped releasing humorous and even nonsense songs alongside their wedding-and-funeral ballads and politicized anthems; and Dolly Parton, the most agile pop star of all, who's crossed into nearly every category that's interested her with her own birdlike laugh and dimpled smile. Dolly herself has deep and strange predilections: her many songs about dead children, for example, or her way of turning sexuality cartoonish not only as comic relief, but as a weapon. It's her oddball side as well as her musical genius that's allowed her to slip through so many doors.

Beyoncé did not create Cowboy Carter to honor white artists like Parton, but she made a wise decision by invoking her as a partner and a patron saint. In the spoken interlude that precedes Beyoncé's rewrite of her classic "Jolene," Parton refers to Beyoncé's famous line about a white woman's allure for her Black husband, "Becky with the good hair," as "that hussy with the good hair." She drawls out the insult, though, as if she's in the middle of a Hee Haw skit: huzzzzy . It's a goofy, enjoyably destabilizing moment — an eccentric gesture that reminds us that as serious as music can be, it's most powerful when its subversions are also fun.
