Set sail from Florida’s Gulf Coast and you’ll discover just how convenient — and action-packed — cruises out of Tampa can be. Welcome to one of Florida’s busiest ports — where the historically Cuban district of Ybor City, the aquarium, city shopping and local art museums are all in easy reach. Wide beaches and urban adventures are also at your fingertips when you book a Carnival cruise from Tampa. And come nightfall, 7th Avenue in Ybor City heats up, Latin-style.

  • Step into a surreal universe at St. Petersburg’s Salvador Dalí Museum.

Usf world news, usf international business forum puts a global spotlight on tampa bay region.

USF President Rhea Law, speaks with a panel of international business specialists at the International Business Forum held at USF

USF President Rhea Law speaks to business and university leaders as they gather for a day of forging far-reaching connections.

TAMPA, FL (April 15, 2024) -- With Florida claiming its place as one of the world’s largest economies, the Tampa Bay Region is emerging as an international center of business, trade and travel with the University of South Florida playing a key role in fueling a talent and innovation pipeline, say global business leaders who gathered for the first international business summit to be staged in the region.

Business leaders at the USF International Business Forum pose for a group picture

In a daylong event on April 10, more than 200 people came together at the USF International Business Forum to take stock of the region’s potential as a gateway to the global economy. Hosted by USF World , the Muma College of Business , and the new Office of University Community Partnerships , the inaugural forum put a spotlight on a globally-focused economic ecosystem that’s on the rise.

“Florida is a magnet for business and top talent,” USF President Rhea Law told the crowd gathered at the Marshall Student Center. “Last year we had an 86% net gain in business coming here … that’s the largest in the country. We have something very special going on in our state, and in particular we have something very special going on in Tampa Bay. We have the environment, we have the ecosystem that will support these businesses, and we do that together because we link arms and make sure we take care of those businesses.”

Conversations spanned such issues as immigration, the talent pipeline, the resources available to local companies looking to expand overseas and the role of consulars general – diplomats from Canada, Brazil, Japan, and Mexico led the conversation – in connecting their countries to Florida markets “We have a very diverse economic portfolio in our community,” said Tampa Mayor Jane Castor. “When we look at the international stage, we want to look at how we can leverage our talent.”

representatives from women in international trade (Tampa Bay chapter) at the International Business Fprum networking expo.

Entities such as Port Tampa Bay (Florida’s largest port in both size and tonnage and a key transit center for imports and the cruise industry) and Tampa Bay International Airport (routinely ranked as one of the nation’s best airports) were on hand to emphasize the transportation pillars of the region. Organizations such as the Florida Small Business Development Center at USF , World Trade Center Tampa Bay, and TECO were among the twenty-eight companies and organizations who joined a networking expo to showcase how they contribute to international business connectivity and success.

For  management consulting entrepreneur Lauren Weiner, the co-founder and chief revenue officer of  WWC Global, the Tampa Bay Region’s unique business ecosystem became an important competitive advantage for the company, whose portfolio includes the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Agency for International Development, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security. She called the evolution of the region as a global business center “astounding.”

“When I first said we were moving to Tampa Bay, people said: You moved where? Really?” Now they say: “Oh, that’s a great place,’” Weiner said. “We can get talent in ways we couldn’t very early on, we do source from USF routinely for all our needs. It is a phenomenal place to start and run a business. It is very easy to get anywhere outside of Florida or even the U.S.… We are in 17 time zones; we have been able to manage a global business in Tampa because of the ecosystem we have here.”

For more information and a list of some of the resources for international business in the Tampa Region, click here .

For pictures of the event, click here .

Here are a few perspectives shared from the day:

  • Ben Hom, vice president of human resources for McKibbon Hospitality, which partners with the Muma College of Business in preparing students to work in the industry, said USF has been a crucial partner in preparing students to work in the hospitality industry and is key to sustaining the company’s workforce – particularly international students who become part of the organization. “Hospitality is a common language,” Hom said. “I don’t need to speak English to show hospitality. I don’t need to have certain words. It’s something right out of the heart.”
  • Thomas Hobbs, chief of staff for Port Tampa Bay, said the Tampa Bay Region has momentum that is feeding its future success in international business. The port recently landed a major shipping company from South Africa, he noted. "The state’s pro-business reputation when it comes to taxes, job creation efforts and regulations is a key attractor...It’s almost like a snowball effect we have here,” he said. “As more people come, the more people want to come. … All these companies coming here are saying, ‘Wow! What is it about this place? Maybe we need to look at it too.’”
  • There’s some friendly competition between Canada and Brazil when it comes to who is Florida’s biggest international partner. Sylvia Cesaratto, the consul general of Canada who is based in Miami , noted the hundreds of direct flights from Canada to Florida bringing tourists and winter residents, as well as a truck pipeline of goods from Florida’s ports to the northern neighbor. Joao Lucas Quental Novaes de Almeda, the consul general for Brazil based in Orlando , noted the more than $4 billion in annual trade between his country and Florida which occurs each year as well as the more than 475,000 Brazilians who now call the Sunshine State home. “Whenever the Tampa Bay Lightning win, Canada wins,” Cesaratto countered. “Half the team is Canadian.”
  • Greg Bobanic, a 2001 USF graduate who is vice president of global IT staffing firm Kforce , said USF’s investment in attracting international students has become a regional strength and a competitive advantage. “The business here – it’s such a booming and thriving economy – they are so fortunate to have this talent pool coming out semester by semester of such a diverse, robust skillset. It’s not just IT, its engineering, its life sciences, its liberal arts. Not many schools really put out this kind of quality in an emerging economy,” he said.

A Carnival Cruise ship veered off course to rescue 27 Cuban migrants who were stranded on a rickety wooden boat in the waters between Florida and the island nation, according to a report.

Carnival Paradise had just set sail from Tampa when it spotted the desperate US-bound migrants about 20 miles off the coast of Cuba,

The ship set a course to intercept their decrepit craft with the high-seas rescue taking place around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Fox News reported .

Cruise ship rescues migrants.

The cruise ship was bound for Roatan, Honduras when it spotted the Cubans.

All 27 were taken aboard the ship, where they were fed and given medical checkups.

The Carnival crew notified the US Coast Guard and officials in Roatan.

In a statement, Carnival put the number of rescued migrants at 28 and said the ship was still scheduled to arrive in Honduras on Monday but did not provide additional details.

Earlier this month, the US Coast Guard intercepted a ramshackle home-made boat off the Key West shoreline — and shipped all 16 migrants on board back to Cuba, officials said.

The barely-sea-worthy craft — the bow of a small wooden boat with the rest made of foam — was spotted by an eagle-eyed good Samaritan and picked up by the Coast Guard cutter Charles David Jr. on April 7,  according to a press release .

The migrants were taken aboard the cutter and shipped back to Cuba, the Coast Guard said.

Guide to Adam Peters’ drafting approach: What history shows about the Commanders GM

ASHBURN, VA FEBRUARY 28: Washington Commanders GM Adam Peters speaks at a press conference at Commanders Park in Ashburn, VA on February 5, 2024. The Commanders announced that former Dallas Cowboy Defensive Coordinatior Mike Quinn as the new Head Coach of the Washington Commanders. (Photo by Michael A. McCoy /For The Washington Post via Getty Images)

Adam Peters is days away from completing his first NFL Draft as the Washington Commanders’ general manager. Looking back at the talent evaluator’s seven seasons with the 49ers helps project what’s about to happen.

Peters, San Francisco’s assistant GM the previous three seasons before joining Washington in January , effectively ran the draft room for a 49ers team that, starting in 2019, won at least 10 games four out of five seasons, reached four NFC championships and two Super Bowls. The longtime scout and personnel executive brought his insight and process to the Commanders. We’ve already seen the prospect group outing as a way to learn more about the person .

As for rules of the road over seven rounds, The Athletic’s 49ers reporter Matt Barrows shares lessons learned from watching Peters in action. Commanders reporter Ben Standig takes Barrows’ guidance and applies it to potential scenarios as Washington enters the draft with nine selections — six in the top 100 — including the No. 2 overall pick.

Peters searches for ‘gold helmet’ guys

Barrows: The 49ers looked for high-character guys throughout their drafts. Some prospects, however, were exceptional when it came to character and leadership, and were designated as “gold helmet” players.

As Peters explained, these players were “exemplary” in several areas, including performance, leadership and intelligence. They usually were team captains and were always well-liked by teammates and coaches. Only about 15 to 20 prospects per draft class reach “gold helmet” status, Peters said, and the 49ers would be lucky to come away with one or two per year. Some years they had zero.

“There’s not a lot who earn that (status),” Peters said. “It’s something that you have to really earn, and it’s not something we just hand out.”

Some recent gold helmet guys in San Francisco: tackle Colton McKivitz (fifth round, 2020), safety Talanoa Hufanga (fifth round, 2021), safety Ji’Ayir Brown (third round, 2023) and tight end Brayden Willis (seventh round, 2023).

The name obviously comes from the 49ers’ team colors, but we think it works in Washington, too.

Standig: Team captains, got it. There have been a few players with that honor mentioned or considered for the Commanders.

Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU — Daniels, arguably the leading candidate for Washington’s first-round pick at No. 2, went with the lead-by-example type as the Tigers’ quarterback during his Heisman Trophy-winning season. “Jayden set the standard that he holds everybody to,” LSU defensive lineman Jordan Jefferson said at the Senior Bowl. “He’s not a real vocal guy, but he sets the standard … for how we should play every day.”

LSU coach Brian Kelly, per Dane Brugler’s NFL Draft guide : “Jayden’s work in the offseason was unbelievable. We used to cut off how long players could stay in the building but had to change our protocols and give players unlimited access because Jayden basically lived here.”

Commanders 7-round mock draft: Swing for Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye?

Ladd McConkey, WR, Georgia — The Commanders could target a receiver as a Curtis Samuel replacement with one of their five Day 2 picks. From a route-running perspective, they won’t do better in this class than the 5-foot-11 McConkey, who Brugler described as a “quarterback-friendly target with the inside-outside versatility to be a quality No. 2 option for an NFL offense.”

Zak Zinter, G, Michigan — The four-year starter suffered a significant leg injury with three games remaining in the Wolverines’ national championship-winning season. The two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection helped enforce the determined mindset sought by coach Jim Harbaugh before and after the injury. Brugler’s guide says Zinter is “universally liked in the program.”

Peters wants consensus with his picks

Barrows: Peters did something cool every year in San Francisco. Before Day 3 of the draft, he had everyone in his department — from area scouts to the college scouting director — stand up and name a player he or she hoped the 49ers would select that day. They called it “Table Talk.”

In 2021, the runaway winner was Hufanga, whose slow 40-yard dash that year caused him to tumble down draft boards. Still, the local scout loved him. So did some of the national scouts and coaches.

“When he was still on the board (late in the fifth round), that made it an easy pick,” Peters said. “And we think we got a really good player at a really good value there.”

That was a theme in the 49ers’ drafts. If they had a special in with a player — a coach or scout who was tight with one of the player’s college coaches — they often used it. Peters was looking for insight and inside information, of course. But he also wanted buy-in, especially when it came to late-round selections.

Standig: Peters arrived in January as the coveted GM candidate this hiring cycle but without any big-shot vibes. His lengthy opening statement at last week’s pre-draft news conference with assistant GM Lance Newmark was solely about thanking his staff and numerous others in the organization by name for their efforts since he arrived. Those are the actions of someone seeking inclusivity.

49ers leaned heavily on their research and development department

Barrows: Peters isn’t scared of analytics and often looked to the 49ers’ research and development department to bolster what the scouting staff thought about a prospect.

In 2021, for example, the R&D department gave running back Elijah Mitchell one of its highest grades on outside zone runs, something the 49ers use heavily in their offense. So they ended up using a sixth-round pick on Mitchell, who is Christian McCaffrey ’s top backup.

Last year, the department cited Willis’ broken-tackle percentage, which encouraged the team to take him in the seventh round. The R&D department even came up with a special stat for defensive linemen called GTFO rate. It stands for Get The F— Off and is a homage to defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, who wants his players to fly off the line of scrimmage and often used that phrase — loudly — during San Francisco’s practices.

Edge rusher Robert Beal Jr. ’s GTFO score — how quickly a player moves on his initial burst — was a big reason the team used a fifth-round pick on him last year.

Standig: Under previous ownership, nobody considered Washington’s roster-building approach cutting-edge. New managing partner Josh Harris’ reputation as the owner of NBA and NHL franchises is the opposite. He began expanding the analytics department last season with the hiring of Eugene Shen as senior vice president of football strategy. Shen previously worked in analytics for the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars .

“Anytime I see things that might give us an edge, we try to take advantage of them,” Harris said at last month’s league meeting . “The Eugene hire was exactly that. … We’re pretty steeped in the analytics community from some of our other experiences. He had a good reputation and he had been in the NFL, (with) obviously a series of programs that are very well thought of.”

2024 NFL analytics mock draft: Using projection model, consensus big board to make best picks

Peters looked for defensive linemen with burst

Barrows: Peters and his staff will try to find players who fit what the Commanders’ coaches are seeking, of course. But considering their new defensive line coach, Darryl Tapp, served under Kocurek the last three seasons, it stands to reason he, too, wants linemen who explode off the line of scrimmage.

Over the years, the 49ers sought players with impressive 10-yard splits on their 40-yard dash. Beal is one example. Others include Jordan Willis , who had an impressive 1.57-second 10-yard split in 2017, and defensive tackle Kevin Givens , who recorded a 1.59-second 10-yard split in 2019.

Standig: There are some names to track assuming Peters continues leaning on that GTFO rate.

LSU’s Mekhi Wingo paced all defensive tackles at the NFL Scouting Combine in the 10-yard split — 1.64 at 284 pounds. Brugler’s ninth-rated DT, Wingo, another team captain, had 7 1/2 sacks and 11 1/2 tackles for loss in 22 games — 20 starts — over his final two seasons with the Tigers. “His first-step quickness and shock in his hands often (give Wingo) early advantages,” Brugler wrote.

Colorado State defensive end Mohamed Kamara ranked third (1.58) in the 10-yard split behind projected first-round selections Chop Robinson and Dallas Turner, and just ahead of two “30” visit players, Chris Braswell and Jalyx Hunt. The 248-pound Kamara wowed with 13 sacks and 17 tackles for loss in 2023.

Wingo is projected among the first 70 to 95 picks, with Kamara in the Round 4-5 range.

Peters might have a cheat code when it comes to LBs

Barrows: Not every linebacker the 49ers have selected in recent years was a home run. (See: Reuben Foster, a first-round pick in 2017.)

But there have been far more hits than misses at the position, perhaps because Peters wasn’t always searching for college linebackers. For example, Fred Warner (third round, 2018) essentially was a big nickelback at BYU. Two others, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and Jalen Graham , were safeties in college.

Even Dre Greenlaw , who starts alongside Warner, was a cornerback in high school.

“So most of our guys have been secondary guys who moved to linebacker,” linebackers coach Johnny Holland said last season. “They have the speed and the ability to play the position and they understand what’s happening back there.”

Standig: Sifting through Washington’s many interactions with prospects since January led to Utah strong safety Cole Bishop and UTEP linebacker Tyrice Knight. On Bishop, from Brugler’s draft guide:

“Rangy athlete (6-foot-2, 206 pounds) who covers a ton of ground. … Uses his widescreen vision to hunt crossers and smack ball carriers over the middle of the field. … Physical near the line of scrimmage to handle box duties or set a hard edge. … Bishop needs to put more impact plays on tape by setting traps for the quarterback in coverage, but he plays with top-down explosiveness and the football IQ to make plays at all three levels of the field. He has NFL starter-caliber talent and is ideally suited for a robber role.”

Knight, a 6-foot, 233-pounder, moved to Mike linebacker in 2023 and finished fourth nationally in tackles and first with 84 solo tackles. The Day 3 prospect who never missed a game as a three-year starter tied for the fastest 10-yard split (1.54) among linebackers at the combine. Brugler’s draft profile called Knight a “rabid dog against the run” and said his motor model “didn’t come with cruise control.”
