GRAND TEMPLES AND PEACEFUL SHRINES

Japan cruises.

Enter a world of towering mountains, breathtaking landscapes and ancient culture in Japan.

Closed to the world for over 200 years, today the ports of Japan glimmer with an otherworldly beauty. Jump onboard a Japan cruise to view digital billboards plastered with the latest anime cling to high-tech skyscrapers in Tokyo, or enter into the serene Meiji forest that dominates the city center. In Japan, you'll find an explosion of culture in every season, from the iconic pink cherry blossoms that line Kyoto's Philosopher's Path in the spring to the powerful temples and beach barbecues that shine in Okinawa in the summer. In autumn, head up Kobe's Mt. Rokko for a view of fiery orange-yellow treetops, and in winter, soak in the natural onsen of Beppu, Arima or Niigata. No matter where you end up, be sure to take in the eclectic architecture along the way, as temples and shrines give way to apartment blocks and izakaya pubs specializing in sushi rolls and sake rice wine.

Japan, Kyoto Toji Pagoda

CENTER YOUR SOUL

Japan's ancient culture will capture a piece of your soul. Old temples wafting with incense, impressive castles jutting into the sky and tatami-clad wooden homes await you with an air of magnificence.

Japan, Ishigaki Yaima Village

TEMPLES AND TRADITION

Get in touch with your spiritual side in Tokyo as you pass under the giant lanterns of Sensoji temple to pay your respects. In Hiroshima Bay, witness the majesty of the otherworldly Itsukushima shrine that floats alone on the water, backdropped by rocky mountains. See the rich gold pavilion of Kinkaku-ji temple in Kyoto, best appreciated with a freshly prepared cup of matcha tea.

Japan, Enoshima Island

HEAD TO THE ISLANDS OKI-NOW-A

Japan is an island nation at heart, and the surrounding seas hold astounding sights. Sail among the 99 Kujukushima Islands on a bright red and yellow hybrid tour boat in Sasebo. Next, dive into Okinawa's perfect sky-blue waters and relax on unknown island beaches. For a peek into the past, see Nagasaki's eerie Battleship Island, or make the pilgrimage to Tokyo's Enoshima, an island of shrines.

Japan Osaka Castle

THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI

The Samurai and feudal lords built impressive castles all over Japan, most of which were reconstructed in the Meiji Restoration Era. For some firsthand history, stop by Osaka Castle near Kyoto , or head to Okinawa, where the Ryukyu kingdom reigned supreme, to visit Shurijo Castle, a UNESCO site that will enlighten you to the sub-tropical splendor that put the island on the map.

Japan, Ishigaki Family Eating

INDULGE YOUR SENSES

The Japanese way of life is a pure appreciation of the small things. Explore the islands as the Japanese would by eating good food, viewing beautiful landscapes and making acquaintances with the friendly locals.

Japan, Mount Fuji and Green Tea Fields

FIERCE FUJI

Feel on top of the world as you explore the tallest mountain in Japan. Start the climb up Mt. Fuji in Shimizu, and let yourself be wowed by the volcano's incredible scale. For a smaller mountain vacation adventure, take a cable car up Mt. Rokko in Kobe, and delight in the mountaintop town that overlooks Kobe city, or walk the steps leading through the 10,000 bright-red  torii  gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine that climbs up the gentle mountainside.

Japan, Ishigaki Beef Lunch

THANK YOU VERY MOCHI

Every single city or prefecture in Japan has a specialty ingredient. Be bold in Shimonoseki, and taste thin slices of blowfish sashimi, prepared by skilled chefs who have trained for 10 years to make this specific dish. Indulge in the world's most premium beef, a melt-in-the-mouth wagyu steak from Kobe, or delight in the detailed dishes of Kyoto's seasonal multi-course style of cooking.

Japan, Kamado Hot Springs

FEEL THE HEAT

Onsen, natural hot spring baths, are a widely appreciated pleasure in Japan and a must-try on colder days. Take a cable car up Mt. Rokko in Kobe to find the steamy Arima Onsen town, famous for its medicinal properties. In Beppu, take your pick of over 2,000 onsen, or gaze at the steaming azure waters of Jikoku Onsen, also known as the "Hells" of Beppu.

Japan, Okinawa World

Explore the enchanted ISLANDS OF JAPAN

Explore unfrequented ports for a rare insight into the layers of Japanese culture. Soak up the sun in Southern Japan, an area blessed by blue waters and powdery beaches, or head further east where big cities and old wooden temples sit side by side. There's no shortage of beauty among the Japanese islands.

Japan, Fuji Mountain Red Pagoda

EXPERIENCE THE VERY BEST OF JAPAN

Take a historic route through the islands to experience the very best of Japan with your cruise. Stop off in Kobe for a taste of its famous wagyu beef, and continue to the old capital of Kyoto , where you'll see centuries-old shrines mingle with skyscrapers. Don't forget to stop in the cosmopolitan metropolis of Tokyo for world-class sushi and sashimi.

Japan, Ishigaki Rural Lunch

FEEL THE FLAVOR OF FUKUOKA

Fukuoka is a lively port city with a friendly feel, streets lined with cherry blossoms and intimate zen temples. Enter Japan with a cruise through this southern city, exploring the world-famous Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and slurping up tonkotsu-broth ramen noodles along the way.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Mind Your Manners

Japan is a unique, eclectic country with distinct customs and an adventurous landscape ideal for travel. Politeness is a way of life in Japan. To avoid insulting the locals, always make sure you take off your shoes when you go inside a house or Japanese-style establishment. Eating sushi with your hands, however, is fully allowed — in fact, it's considered rather sophisticated. The weather varies quite a bit in Japan depending on the season. Wear loose, breathable clothing in July when summer is at its hottest and most humid. From December to March, warm clothing is recommended, as you can expect snow in all but the most southern parts of Japan.

Finding the Right Ship for You

Shuri Castle in Okinawa

7 Unexpected Places You Can Go on a Cruise

Haggling or tipping is not observed in Japan and will be met with confusion, so it's best not to try.

Most Japanese don't speak English, so make sure you carry a phrase book with you as you explore.

The public transport in Japan is incredible. You can take a train almost everywhere in the country.

CUISINE Sushi for days

Japan is synonymous with culinary excellence, and its cuisine is all about whole ingredients and locally sourced food, served as fresh as possible. From gleaming gems of sushi to steaming hot bowls of soba to specially cared-for wagyu cows, you won't be disappointed.

Japanese Noodles with Fried Shrimp

you'll want it soba-d

Soba noodles are made from buckwheat and are often brought to life from scratch by the shop owner. In summer, experience cold soba noodles with a small bowl of dipping sauce, or slurp up hot broth and tempura prawn in the cold winter months.

Japanese Blowfish Plate

control your tempura!

Looking to add some thrill to your dinner? Japan's chefs have mastered preparing poisonous blowfish in a safe and delicious way. Although the best blowfish is found in Shimonoseki, it's prepared by expert chefs all over Japan. With a subtle flavor and firm texture, you'll be hooked to its dangerous taste!

Japan Osaka Street Food

hit the streets

When you're exploring the city streets of Tokyo, be sure to grab some top-notch street food. Feast on takoyaki, fried balls of dough flavored with dashi stock and stuffed with fresh octopus, or okonomiyaki, a savory pancake made with flour, cabbage, vegetables, your choice of seafood or pork and topped with a savory condiment that includes ketchup, Worcestershire and oyster sauce.

Related Ports

Gold temple in Kyoto

From the cruise port of Osaka, Celebrity Cruises passengers can spend a day in the former capital of Japan, Kyoto.

With its intriguing combination of traditional and modern architecture, ancient history and popular culture, Japan has become one of the most sought-after cruise destinations in Asia—not least because so much of the island-nation, with its long coastline, is accessible by water.

International cruise lines finally returned to Japan in March 2023 after a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19 border closures . The result has been pent-up demand for Japan cruises, and cruise lines have responded by introducing a wide variety of sailings in Japan for this year and next. You can cruise Japan on a smaller, more intimate yacht, an expedition vessel, an ultra-luxury ship, or a large cruise ship with more than 2,000 passengers.

Regardless of which ship you choose, the best Japan cruises feature itineraries that include neon-and-skyscraper cities, tranquil shrines and temples, beautiful parks and gardens, and hot springs and snow-capped peaks, including Mount Fiji. Depending on the time of year you choose to sail, you can enjoy springtime’s cherry blossoms or the crimson leaves of fall. Cruise passengers will also get to experience a wealth of cultural encounters, from local food and customs to colorful arts and entertainment.

For those who are as excited as we are about the return to Japan, here are our picks for the best Japan cruises.

Cherry blossom trees surround a castle in Japan

Let Abercrombie & Kent host you in Japan during one of the most scenic times to visit—cherry blossom season.

Abercrombie & Kent

Best for viewing cherry blossoms or fall foliage

If your goal is seeing Japan’s famous cherry blossoms, luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent has chartered a Ponant ship for the height of the season, from March 27 to April 9, 2024. A similar fall sailing will show off Japan’s fall foliage. The cruise is on the Le Soleil , capped at 199 passengers. With its expedition team and local guides, A&K is focusing on cultural experiences such as private performances by the world-renowned Kodo taiko drummers, Kabuki warriors, and geishas as well as time spent in scenic Japanese gardens. In Hiroshima, passengers will meet a storyteller who will discuss the World War II atomic bomb attack. Onboard lectures and presentations will be led by specialists in Japanese history and culture.

Abercrombie & Kent’s 13-night Wonders of Japan cruise from Osaka to Sapporo starts at $21,485 per person (includes two nights at the Ritz-Carlton Osaka).

Celebrity Cruises

Best for families

The 2,138-passenger Celebrity Millennium , complete with an alfresco movie theater and a supervised Camp at Sea program with more than 500 activities, is the perfect option for families; it will cruise in Japan from May to early October 2024. The line’s Best of Japan sailings embark from Yokohama, near Tokyo. After exploring the vibrant capital city, key ports will include Kobe (known for gourmet marbled beef) and Hiroshima, as well as lesser-known gems (on select itineraries) such as the hot springs of Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido. All sailings include an overnight stay in Osaka, with time to head to the celebrated temples, shrines, and overall beauty of Kyoto (one hour away)—or passengers can stay in Osaka and visit the world’s largest aquarium and Universal Studios Japan.

Celebrity’s 12-night Best of Japan cruises start at $1,799 per person.

A wood-paneled communal bath onboard Guntû with ocean views

Take a dip in the communal bath on the sleek 38-passenger Guntû .

Courtesy of Guntû

Best for local immersion

For something different, try a destination-immersive luxury floating hotel on Japan’s island-rich Seto Inland Sea with a local company. An artisan-built ship called Guntû does three- to five-day itineraries. Carrying only 38 passengers, it’s designed by the Japanese architect Yasushi Horibe to resemble a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. The decor is minimalist and modern, with lots of wood and glass details. For a splurge, some of the suites come with their own open-air tranquil onsen baths. When you are not off exploring remote villages, dine on cuisine envisioned by a renowned Tokyo chef Kenzo Sato from Shigeyoshi, indulge in seafood-rich creations at the sushi bar, sip craft cocktails, and participate in tea ceremonies. In the spa, there’s a communal bath, where you can join other guests while taking in water views.

Three-night sailings with Guntû from Hiroshima start at $4,127 per person.

The 16-night Coastal Japan: Imperial Dynasties and Modern Culture route (which includes two hotel nights in Tokyo) sails between Niigata and Kobe and will focus on both cultural attractions, such as temples and art studios, and natural wonders, including on Japan’s subtropical islands. A 15-day Sailing the East China Sea: Japan, Okinawa, and Taiwan itinerary includes the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. The ship is the 138-passenger National Geographic Resolution , with attractions that include a NatGeo-certified photographer onboard to help you capture Japan’s beautiful scenery with aplomb.

Lindblad’s 16-night Coastal Japan sailing starts at $24,650 per person, and the 15-night East China Sea itinerary starts at $20,050 per person.

Enjoy the turquoise-blue waters of the islands that make up Japan’s Iriomote Ishigaki National Park.

Best for getting off the beaten cruise path

Upscale French line Ponant explores Japan with its 184-passenger Le Jacques-Cartier and is doing some of the most innovative cruise itineraries currently available in Japan—in an expedition style, with naturalists leading landings in inflatable Zodiacs. The area of exploration is the subtropical southern islands with a focus on the Okinawa archipelago and the Yaeyama Islands in the Ryukyu Archipelago, and the lush Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Seven-night itineraries in March and April 2024 include time on pristine beaches on islands such as Ishigaki and Kume, as well as snorkeling excursions and diving opportunities. Out of the water, you’ll visit traditional villages for cultural experiences such as drum and dance performances.

Ponant’s seven-night sailing between Keelung, Taiwan, and Kagoshima starts at $6,470 per person.

A 10-night Grand Japan sailing between Yokohama and Osaka affords deeper exploration of smaller ports, including in the Seto Inland Sea (larger ships can only get so deep into the island region). From Kagoshima, Windstar passengers will visit the lunar landscapes and lava fields of Sakurajima Island and from Shingu, the mountain-perched Kamikura-jinja Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As part of the James Beard partnership, Tracy Chang, chef/owner of Pagu restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts, will be onboard cooking, doing demonstrations, and leading a market tour, on a September cruise. Her cuisine celebrates Spanish and Japanese tapas, paired with wines and sakes.

Windstar’s 10-night Japan sailing starts at $3,499 per person.

This 53-day Cruise Sails Across the Pacific Ocean and Back — With an Incredible 3 Weeks in Japan

The newly announced Holland America Line cruise leaves from Seattle and visits 13 exceptional destinations in Japan before returning to the U.S.

Courtesy of Holland America Line

On Sept. 1, 2024, you’ll be able to sail to Japan on a 53-day cruise. The Majestic Japan journey is Holland America Line’s newest itinerary in the cruise line’s Legendary Voyages program, which takes guests on extended cruises ranging from 25 to 59 days. (The Legendary Voyages program launched to honor Holland America’s 150th anniversary this year.)

And, you don’t even have to fly to Japan to get there.

The “Majestic Japan” itinerary starts and ends in Seattle. From the Pacific Northwest, the ship, Westerdam , sails to Vancouver and Alaska’s Aleutian Islands before heading down to Japan. Once in Japan, you’ll spend 20 days visiting 13 ports. It covers every part of the country, including Hokkaido as the first stop.

Luciano Mortula/Courtesy of Holland America Line

First, the cruise travels through the north and mountainous regions, heading up the east coast (as far north as Toyama) and stopping in Kobe and Yokohama. Since it’s a September cruise, the leaves in the high country will be turning to their brilliant fall colors, and the weather will be temperate and comfortable for all the itinerary’s outdoor excursions.

On the south end of the country, passengers will stop in Nagasaki, Ishigaki, and Naha, then sail by Iwo Jima and Midway — two destinations of particular importance in World War II history.

Other Japanese ports on the cruise include Kushiro, Hakodate, Kochi, Hiroshima, Kanmon Strait, Fukuoka, Sakaiminato, and Kanazawa.

“Guests will find a good balance of full-day port visits, overnights, as well as scenic cruising,” said Paul Grigsby, the vice president of deployment and itinerary planning at Holland America Line.

On the way back to Seattle, the cruise spends three days in Hawaii.

According to research done by Holland America, the cruise line’s customers are increasingly interested in longer cruises with more immersive experiences. This Japan itinerary was created with that in mind.

Alan LAW/Adobe Stock/Courtesy of Holland America Line

“Consistently, Japan rates as one of the most desirable Asian cruise destinations,” Grigsby said. “Majestic Japan allows us to offer Japan ‘from your doorstep’ with no more than a domestic air flight to and from Seattle. Because we can linger on our way, we have chosen to visit some of the best ports in Alaska, including Kodiak and Dutch Harbor, before landing at Kushiro, Hokkaido.”

Aside from, you know, all the time you get to spend in Japan and on a cruise ship, the itinerary has two major things going for it. First, it’s one of the longest Japan itineraries on a major cruise line, with nearly three weeks in Japan. Second, Grigsby says, “we are not aware of any major cruise line that has an immersive voyage like this sailing round-trip from the United States.”

Right now, the Majestic Japan itinerary is on sale for $153 per day, with upgrades available for the Have It All Early Booking Bonus deal — that includes low-price guarantees on shore excursions; specialty dining; free upgrades to the Elite Beverage package and Premium Wi-Fi; and free prepaid Crew Appreciation costs, with cabin fares starting at $207 per day.

TOUR DAY 1: TOKYO HIGHLIGHTS (can break into 2 days)

Sensoji temple in asakusa.

Located in the Asakusa district of Tokyo, Sensoji Temple is brightly colored and was first built in 645. It is the oldest temple in the world and has always been one of the famous ancient temples in Tokyo. The entrance of the temple is the famous Kaminarimon Gate, with huge lanterns hanging on the towering gate.

Kaminarimon has become a well-known landmark in Asakusa because of its unique shape, and it is also a popular photo spot. Walk through the gate to the 200-meter-long Nakamise Shopping Street, lined with shops selling various souvenirs and local snacks. After shopping and eating, you can go through the treasure gate to the inner courtyard of the temple, where you can see the main hall, five-story pagoda and Asakusa Shrine.

The Imperial Palace (exterior)

The current Imperial Palace (皇居, Kōkyo) is located on the former site of Edo Castle, a large park area surrounded by moats and massive stone walls in the center of Tokyo, a short walk from Tokyo Station. It is the residence of Japan's Imperial Family.

From Kokyo Gaien, the large plaza in front of the Imperial Palace, visitors can view the Nijubashi, two bridges that form an entrance to the inner palace grounds. The stone bridge in front is called Meganebashi (Eyeglass Bridge) for its looks. The bridge in the back was formerly a wooden bridge with two levels, from which the name Nijubashi (Double Bridge) is derived.

The inner grounds of the palace are generally not open to the public.

Meiji Jingu Shrine

Meiji Shrine is located in the center of Tokyo. It is a shrine built to worship Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. It is also the most important shrine of Shintoism in Japan. The number of people who visit Meiji Shrine every year is the highest in Japan, because the divination signs are very effective, and many people pray here for "family safety", "academic achievement" and so on. Every year, many important life ceremonies such as newborn naming ceremonies, coming-of-age ceremonies, and graduation ceremonies are held here. In particular, thousands of traditional Japanese weddings are held every year, adding a delicate and beautiful scenery here.

Lunch at Ramen Street at Tokyo Station

Ramen, also known as Japanese noodle soup, is usually served in a bowl of soft-boiled eggs, green onions, and char siew. Ramen Street is a one-stop noodle center that is part of the Tokyo Station underground mall. It includes eight tantalizing ramen restaurants. Its top three ramen restaurants include Rokurinsha, Ikaruga and Oreshiki Jun.

Tsukemen can be tasted at Rokurinsha. This noodle restaurant is famous for its old fire dipping noodle soup that reflects the authentic taste of noodles. This noodle shop is very popular, so you might have to wait in line, but it's definitely worth the wait.

Shibuya Scramble Crossing

What is the most identifiable landmark in Tokyo? It is the Shibuya Crossing. A visit to Tokyo would not be complete without visiting this unquestionably must-see.

Its sprawling scramble intersection is a picture of Tokyo as a whole: action in all directions. The street is constantly filled with people from all directions heading in different directions. As they try to cross, they bump, sidestep, and swerve around each other in a frantic mess. After a few minutes, it stops. When the traffic gets its turn, every little corner of the intersection slowly fills up, and just as people spill into the street, the crosswalk light turns green and the mayhem begins again.

A total of 500,000 people cross the crossing each day, which means 3,000 people cross at once!

Tokyo Tower - The Eiffel Tower of Japan

Built in 1958, Tokyo Tower is located in the center of the city. It symbolizes Tokyo's rebirth after World War II. Tokyo Tower is 333 meters tall. When it was completed, the tower was the tallest in the world, surpassing even its inspiration, the Eiffel Tower. It witnessed the rapid economic growth that would be the beginning of the Japanese economic miracle, representing a renewed and ambitious Japan.

Tokyo Tower’s bright silhouette became a popular element in Tokyoites’ lives. Besides its striking color, it also lights up at night, dazzling both residents and tourists alike. The view from the top of Tokyo Tower is breathtakingly beautiful. One can see most of Tokyo's skyscrapers and monuments unobstructed. When the weather is fine, you can overlook Mount Fuji.

Cherry Blossom at Shinjuku Gyoen Garden

Originally the residence of the samurai family, Shinjuku Gyoen became the imperial garden in 1903 and finally opened as a park in 1949. The vast garden with an area of 144 acres is full of green grass, which is especially suitable for picnics; in spring, thousands of cherry blossom trees dye Shinjuku Gyoen Garden pink, and strolling under the flowers is full of romance.

In addition, Shinjuku Gyoen also has three distinctive gardens: Japanese garden, French garden and English garden, as well as quiet ponds, quiet woods and greenhouses with a variety of tropical and subtropical flowers. If you want to have a light meal here, you can taste traditional dishes or snacks at HANANOKi Cafe.

Tour Day 2: Mt. Fuji and Cherry Blossom

Mt. fuji hiking.

We take you to Mt. Fuji. It's easy to go with our transfer service.  You can hike on the Ochudo Trail, a trail that loops around the middle of Mount Fuji at an almost constant height for 45 minutes to one hour. You will get an effortless feel for Mt. Fuji this way. You can enjoy sweeping views of Lake Kawaguchi, Lake Yamanaka, and the Japanese Alps while strolling along the trail to Satomipei.

Cherry Blossoms at Surrounding Parks

Yamanakako Hanano Miyako Park is a flower field near Yamanakako Lake at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Visitors can enjoy the dreamlike view of Mt. Fuji with charming flowers in the park and surrounding fields.

Arakurayama Sengen Shrine (Chureito Pagoda) - Pagoda with Mount Fuji in the background

The Chureito Pagoda (忠霊塔) is a five storied pagoda on the mountainside overlooking Fujiyoshida City and Mount Fuji off in the distance. The location offers spectacular views of Mount Fuji in combination with the pagoda, especially during the cherry blossom season in mid April when there are hundreds of trees in bloom and during the autumn color season which usually takes place in the first half of November. The spot is particularly popular among photographers as it allows for some wonderfully stereotypical shots of Japan.

7 Best things to do in Japan in 2024

I worked on cruises for 3 years. Here are 6 things I'd never do on board.

  • I used to work on cruises. After many days at sea, there are things I'd never do on a cruise .
  • I never wear my room key around my neck and try to avoid misnaming the ship.
  • I never buy the drink package or pay for meal upgrades in the main dining room.

Insider Today

I've sailed around the world as a cruise-ship employee , and now I enjoy cruising as a passenger.

I love the salty sea air, waking up in a new country, and lazy days by the pool, but a week at sea could get more complicated this year with cruises predicted to be in high demand .

While fighting a little harder to secure a prime seat on the pool deck, you may as well also avoid some rookie mistakes.

Here are six things I'd never do on a cruise after working on them for three years.

Pay for upgrades in the main dining room

Typically, main dining room meals are included in the cost of a cruise. But in recent years, it's become common for cruise lines to charge guests extra if they want to upgrade to "supplementary" items like lobster or certain steaks.

I know $12 may not seem like much for a steak or lobster tail at dinner, but the cost of the cruise is supposed to include your food.

So, even though I enjoy lobster, I stick with the items without the upcharges.

Buy the drink package

I enjoy a piña colada by the pool or a Manhattan while listening to a jazz set after dinner. Even so, it doesn't make sense for me to pay in advance for 12 to 15 cocktails a day.

I've done the math on typical unlimited drink packages , and the cost simply isn't worth it for me.

This is especially true with a port-heavy itinerary. If I've gone ashore to explore all day, that means I'm not sidled up to the bar slurping down alcoholic slushies.

Related stories

I prefer to buy as I go and take advantage of happy hour and other drink specials that are available on certain cruise lines. I also check the beverage policy in advance and bring on my own wine, if allowed.

Touch shared contact surfaces with my fingers

Fellow guests will never see me touching the elevator buttons with my fingertips. Knuckles and elbows do the trick.

Some cruise lines are better than others at wiping down commonly touched surfaces, but I don't take any chances. I avoid touching things others frequently touch, and I wash my hands frequently.

This strategy has worked for me, as I have never contracted norovirus, even when it was running rampant on a ship I was on. It's quite contagious and can linger on your fingertips even after using hand sanitizer . I'd definitely rather be safe than sorry.

Wear my room key around my neck

I never walk around the ship with my room key around my neck, and I especially never do this when on land.

There are two reasons for this. First, I see many passengers using the room keys dangling from their necks to flaunt their cruise loyalty status . It just looks pretentious.

The sophisticated cruisers with the highest status, with the most days at sea, never show off their fancy room keys.

That's because they know the more important reason — safety. In port, that room key bouncing off your chest looks like an invitation to be robbed. It screams, "I have money! Come and take it from me."

Misname the ship

English is a funny language that has its quirks. Naming conventions make that even more complicated.

Ships have proper names, and so do not require a definite article. For example, "Tomorrow I am embarking on Discovery Princess," or "I enjoyed scenic cruising on MS Westerdam."

If you want to look like a savvy sailor, learn to drop the "the!"

Plan my port-day itinerary so tight that I may not make it back to the ship on time

Oh, the recurring nightmares I've had about not making it back to the ship on time during a port day.

I've never missed a sail away, but I have cut it too close at times and have had to run down a pier or two. Just recently, as a passenger, my taxi driver got lost returning our group to the port at night.

When I realized how late we were going to be, I forked over $8 per minute to be connected with the ship. I pleaded with them to wait for us. It was a sprint through the port to get back on and we received quite a scolding from the first officer.

That time, we got lucky. In the future, I'll be giving myself more time than I think I need to make it back.

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares mostly declined Thursday as investors awaited a flood of global earnings reports, including updates from U.S. tech companies known as the “Magnificent Seven.”

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 slid 1.4% in morning trading to 37,931.81. South Korea’s Kospi dropped nearly 1.0% to 2,649.96. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.5% to 17,282.67, while the Shanghai Composite edged 0.2% higher, to 3,049.90.

Trading was closed in Australia for a national holiday, Anzac Day.

Attention is also turning to the Bank of Japan, whose two-day monetary policy meeting started Thursday.

“For the record, heading into tomorrow’s policy decision, exceptional Japanese yen weakness is the agitated elephant in the room for the BoJ,” Tan Jing Yi of Mizuho Bank said in a commentary.

In currency trading, the U.S. dollar rose to 155.46 Japanese yen from 155.31 yen. The euro cost $1.0707, up from $1.0697.

The yen has been trading at 155 yen-levels lately, its lowest level in 34 years. That helps Japanese exporters by raising the value of their overseas earnings, but it also raises the price of imports. Speculation has been growing Japan may intervene to prop up the yen.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 was virtually flat and edged up by 1.08, or less than 0.1%, to 5,071.63. It had jumped sharply in the first two days of the week to claw back nearly two-thirds of last week’s steep loss .

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 42.77, or 0.1%, to 38,460.92, and the Nasdaq composite added 16.11, or 0.1%, to 15,712.75.

Tesla jumped 12.1% after saying the night before that it would accelerate production of new, more affordable vehicles , which investors have been hoping will kickstart growth. The announcement helped investors look past the 55% drop in profit that Tesla reported.

Tesla is the first of the group of stocks among the Magnificent Seven to report its results for the start of 2024. The focus is on the small group of stocks because they drove most of the U.S. stock market’s gain last year, and they’ll need to perform to justify their high prices.

Meta Platforms also reported its latest results after trading ended Wednesday. Alphabet and Microsoft will follow it a day later.

The hope is that profit growth will broaden beyond the Magnificent Seven to other types of companies, in large part because a remarkably solid U.S. economy. They’ll likely need to deliver fatter profits if they want their stock prices to rise. That’s because they’re unlikely to get much help from the other lever that can lift stock prices: interest rates.

“A strong earnings season looks likely to help restore market confidence,” according to Solita Marcelli, chief investment officer Americas at UBS Global Wealth Management.

A report Wednesday said orders for machinery, airplanes and other long-lasting manufactured goods were stronger last month than expected. A recent string of such reports has quashed hopes that the Federal Reserve may deliver the three cuts to interest rates this year that it had earlier signaled.

Boeing lost 2.9% despite reporting results that weren’t as bad as analysts feared . The company, which is battling criticism about the safety of its airplanes, said it’s taking steps to improve its manufacturing quality, which has slowed down production.

Teledyne Technologies tumbled 10.9% for one of the market’s largest losses after the seller of digital imaging sensors, cameras and other equipment reported weaker profit and revenue than forecast. It said demand from the industrial automation and test and measurement markets was weaker than it expected.

On the winning side of the market, Hasbro jumped 11.9% after the toy and game company reported better profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It benefited from growth delivered by its Baldur Gate 3 and Magic: The Gathering games, as well as by its Peppa Pig content.

Texas Instruments climbed 5.6% after reporting stronger profit and revenue for the latest quarter than forecast. Boston Scientific was another one of the stronger forces pushing upward on the S&P 500. It rose 5.7% after topping forecasts for profit and revenue.

In energy trading, benchmark U.S. crude declined 15 cents to $82.66 a barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, fell 14 cents to $87.88 a barrel.

Pennsylvania primary replay: Trump, Biden clinch victory; Casey and McCormick will compete for Senate

All eyes were on Pennsylvania on Tuesday as the key swing state held pivotal elections that could send a clear message for November's race for the White House.

While former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden already locked down their respective party nominations, they both swiftly won the Republican and Democratic primaries in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, garnering even more support.

Sen. Bob Casey, D-Penn., and David McCormick, a businessman, won the Democratic and Republican Senate primaries, and they'll face off in the fall in what's expected to be a close race.

Rep. Summer Lee, D-Penn., won a tough primary battle in the state's 12th congressional district against Bhavini Patel, a member of the Edgewood Borough Council in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

But those weren't the only tight races on Tuesday. Here's a recap of the USA TODAY Network's live coverage of the latest primaries.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Eugene DePasquale secures Democratic bid for attorney general

Eugene DePasquale, the former state auditor general, beat a crowded field of opponents to win the Democratic primary for the open attorney general seat. He will face Republican David Sunday in what’s expected to be competitive general election race.

- Karissa Waddick

David Sunday wins GOP attorney general primary

David Sunday, a York County district attorney, beat state house member Craig Williams in the Republican primary. He’s set to face off against Democrat Eugene DePasquale in the November election.

Republican Ryan McKenzie wins primary in Pennsylvania's 7th District

Ryan McKenzie won the GOP primary to challenge Democratic Rep. Susan Wild for the Lehigh, Pennsylvania, area congressional seat in November. The seat in the state’s 7th District is a top target for Republicans in November.

-Karissa Waddick

Janelle Stelson to face GOP Rep. Scott Perry in PA’s 10th District

Democrat Janelle Stelson will challenge Republican Rep. Scott Perry for Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional seat in November. Stelson beat five Democratic competitors in the primary.

A former news anchor, Stelson is aiming to win over independents and moderate conservatives in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, district to defeat Perry in the general election. The Cook Political Report has labeled the race as leaning in Perry’s favor.

Rep. Summer Lee fights off challenger in PA’s 12th District

Democratic Rep. Summer Lee beat Bhavini Patel in the primary for the state’s 12th district. Her win comes as a potential positive sign for other progressives in Congress who are facing challenges from moderate Democrats over their opposition to additional U.S. military aid for Israel.

Lee’s advocacy for a ceasefire in Gaza became a central theme of the campaign. Her opponent argued that Lee’s criticism of Israel hurt Biden’s reelection efforts. But those arguments ultimately did not win over voters.

Moderate Republican Brian Fitzpatrick fends off challenger in GOP race for 1st District

Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick defeated right-wing challenger Mark Houck in the Bucks County congressional primary, according to a call by the Associated Press.

The race was viewed as a test of how important the issue of abortion could be for the Republican Party’s base in 2024. Fitzpatrick is a widely regarded as a moderate Republican. Houck advocated for a near total ban on abortions, while Fitzpatrick has called for compromise.

David McCormick clinches GOP primary for closely watched Senate seat

David McCormick won the Republican nomination for Senate in Pennsylvania. He ran unopposed in the race and will face incumbent Sen. Bob Casey in the general election.

Donald Trump, Joe Biden lock down Republican and Democratic primaries

Donald Trump and Joe Biden won their respective party primaries in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, picking up dozens of additional delegates as they both seek a second term in the White House.

– Marina Pitofsky

Sen. Bob Casey wins Democratic Senate  primary

Longtime Democratic Sen. Bob Casey won his party’s nomination for the U.S. Senate, after not facing any competition in the race. He will face Republican David McCormick in what’s expected to be a competitive, high dollar general election battle,

More: Pennsylvania Statewide and Presidential Primary Results

Where are Biden and Trump?

Neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump campaigned in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, despite it being a major general election target for both candidates.

Instead, Trump appeared in a New York City courtroom for the second day of witness testimony in his hush money trial. And Biden delivered a speech in Tampa, Florida , attempting to tie Trump to the southern state’s law banning abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy.

Both candidates traveled to Pennsylvania last week for major campaign stops ahead of the primary.

– Karissa Waddick

Is Dean Phillips on the Pennsylvania ballot?

Yes – but the Minnesota congressman is no longer running against Joe Biden for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Phillips, the former chair of the Talenti gelato empire, suspended his longshot bid against Biden in early March after suffering a string of double-digit defeats.

Pennsylvania was in the process of printing its primary ballots at the time he dropped out.

Will Pennsylvania Democrats vote “uncommitted” over Israel-Gaza war?

Pennsylvania does not have an “uncommitted” option on its presidential primary ballot like other states. But that isn’t likely to stop Democrats who plan to cast a protest vote opposing Joe Biden’s handling of the Israel and Hamas war.

The group Uncommitted PA is encouraging Democrats to write-in “uncommitted” on their ballot to advocate for an immediate ceasefire in the war. However, it may be difficult to gauge the impact of the effort. The state election office is unlikely to report a tally of the write-in votes.

Will Pennsylvania Democrats vote “uncommitted” over Gaza war?

Donald trump endorsed david mccormick in pennsylvania senate primary.

Before he entered the courtroom for his New York hush money trial on Tuesday, Trump urged voters to the polls in Pennsylvania.

Trump supported GOP Senate candidate David McCormick in his campaign to unseat Democratic Sen. Bob Casey.

“It’s very important to let them that we’re coming on Nov. 5, we’re coming big,” Trump said. “Pennsylvania get out and vote.”

Polling shows Trump and Biden in virtual tie

With less than seven months until the general election, a RealClearPolitics average of national polls shows the presidential race between Joe Biden and Donald Trump in a dead heat.

The average, calculated based on polls published between mid-March and mid-April, has Trump as 44.6% and Biden at 44.4%. The margin of error of +/- 0.2 is equal to the gap between the two candidates.

Who is Janelle Stelson?

Janelle Stelson, a former new anchor, is running as a Democrat in the state's 10th Congressional District. Her name recognition means she's looking like the frontrunner in the race, though she was also a longtime registered Republican who switched her registration last year.

Moderate Republican fights to keep seat as GOP battles over abortion

In Pennsylvania’s 1 st  Congressional District, longtime Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick is being challenged on his right flank by a candidate who believes abortions should be banned in nearly all circumstances — including in cases of rape and incest.

Mark Houck, Fitzpatrick’s opponent, was acquitted of criminal charges stemming from an altercation at an abortion clinic.  The incident reportedly  inspired him  to run for public office. A devout Catholic, Houck co-founded the men's religious group The King's Men. He's worked as an author, motivational speaker and human resources manager.

Fitzpatrick is a moderate Republican. He is one of a handful of Republican representatives serving in districts that Biden won in 2020.

The primary race could demonstrate just how important the  issue of abortion  is for the Republican Party’s base.

Donald Trump and Joe Biden aren't the only candidates competing in 2024

The rematch between Joe Biden and President Donald Trump is top of mind for most voters across the country this election season. But down-ballot races – including congressional and state-level races – are also sure to have a major impact.

And some already are.

In a competitive special election for a state house seat in deep-red Alabama last month, Democrat Marilyn Lands won  by nearly 25-points . Lands made abortion and in-vitro fertilization access a central point of her campaign. Her win was seen as a testament to the salience of those issues for voters in 2024.

Rep. Summer Lee faces primary challenger over Israel-Hamas war

A Democratic primary for Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District could reveal just how salient the Israel and Hamas war is for Democratic voters – particularly in swing areas of the country.

First-term progressive Rep. Summer Lee, who was among the early advocates calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, is facing a primary challenge from moderate Bhavini Patel over her opposition to the war.

Patel, a 29-year-old municipal council member, has framed the incumbent's criticism of Israel as detrimental to Biden’s re-election efforts

Malcolm Kenyatta and Mark Pinsley fight to compete against Tim DeFoor

State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta and Lehigh County Controller Mark Pinsley are the two Democrats competing to face off against Pennsylvania's Auditor General Tim DeFoor.

Kenyatta previously ran for Senate in Pennsylvania, finishing third in the primary now-Sen. John Fetterman won in 2022.

How many delegates does Joe Biden have?

Joe Biden has picked up 3,078 delegates as he seeks another term in the White House. He needed 1,968 to clinch the Democratic nomination.

Biden is widely expected to win the Democratic primary in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, which would grant him 159 additional delegates.

When are the 2024 conventions?

The Republican Convention will run from July 15-18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The Democratic Convention will take place a month later, from August 19-22, in Chicago, Illinois.

Which states haven’t held primaries yet?

While the results of the Republican and Democratic presidential primaries are all but set, a number of states still haven’t voted in either party’s race. Those states include Indiana, Maryland, Nebraska, West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. The District of Columbia held it’s GOP primary in March, but Democrats in the territory will cast their ballots in June.

Can I vote in Pennsylvania?

First-time voters or individuals who are casting a ballot in a new precinct will need to show identification, according to the Pennsylvania Department of State.

Acceptable identification includes a driver's license, student ID, a firearm permit, a current paycheck and more.

It is a closed primary , meaning that only voters who are registered Democratic or Republican may vote on candidates in their respective parties.

– Teresa Boeckel

What are the key Pennsylvania House races to watch?

  • 1st District: Longtime Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick is being challenged on his right flank by Mark Houk, a candidate who believes abortions should be banned in nearly all circumstances – including in cases of rape and incest.  The primary race could demonstrate just how important the issue of abortion is for the Republican Party’s base.
  • 7th District: Three Republicans – Kevin Dellicker, Ryan Mackenzie and Maria Montero – are competing to take on Democratic Rep. Susan Wild. Her seat is a top target for the GOP in November.
  • 10th District: Six Democrats are vying for the Democratic nomination to challenge GOP Rep. Scott Perry in the November election. Perry was a former chair of the Freedom Caucus, one of the most conservative factions of the Republican Party and was a key figure in efforts to  overturn the results  of the 2020 election. Democrats see an opportunity to flip the seat in the general election.
  • 12th District: Bhavini Patel is running against incumbent Rep. Summer Lee with a message centered on the Israel and Hamas war. Patel has cast herself as a more moderate, pro-Israel candidate and has criticized Lee for her opposition to providing U.S. military aid to Israel.

Who is running for Pennsylvania Attorney General?

Five Democrats and two Republicans are also battling for the open state attorney general position , once held by Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro. Michelle Henry, who is completing the remainder of Shapiro’s term since he was elected governor in 2022, is not running for the position.

Candidates in the Democratic primary include Eugene DePasquale, Keir Bradford-Grey, Joe Khan, Jared Solomon and Jack Stollsteimer.

On the Republican side, state house member Craig Williams is facing off against York County District Attorney Dave Sunday.

− Karissa Waddick

Can independents vote in primaries in Pennsylvania?

No, only registered Republicans and Democrats can cast their ballots in their party primaries. However, independent voters can vote on ballot questions.

− Marina Pitofsky

How many delegates does Donald Trump have?

Donald Trump has picked up 1,915 delegates as he seeks another term in office. He needed 1,215 delegates to lock down the 2024 Republican nomination.

The former president is expected to pick up 67 delegates in Pennsylvania's GOP primary on Tuesday.

Abortion fight plays out in Pennsylvania attorney general election

Abortion has roiled down-ballot races across the country, and Pennsylvania is no exception. Reproductive rights have been a major topic in the attorney general’s race.

All five Democratic candidates for attorney general have committed to protecting the right to abortion and access to FDA-approved medications such as  mifepristone . Meanwhile, the Republican candidates have said that they do not believe the state constitution guarantees the right to an abortion.

As attorney general, both sides would leave the issue for the state legislature to decide.

What time do the polls close in Pennsylvania?

Polls close in Pennsylvania at 8 p.m. ET. Anyone in line by 8 p.m. can vote.

Absentee and mail-in ballots also must be returned and received by election officials by 8 p.m.
