About The Safari Company

The Safari Company is a privately owned business with a Kiwi Kenyan connection which was established in 2005.

We are a small boutique company which means we have a very hands-on approach. When you book with us we email or phone you directly and any questions you have we can answer straight away - you don't have to read through screeds of FAQ online.

Our Administration hub is based in Cambridge, New Zealand where all bookings are processed and the Operations hub is located in the suburb of Karen in Nairobi, Kenya.

"The problem with these fabulous trips is that you want to go back and do them every time you see another post on Facebook!  And really, that’s the only problem with them because they are absolutely the trip of a lifetime.  Would return for the 3rd time in a heartbeat!"

Dianne & Lynn, Manchester, UK

Tailor-Made Tours & Safaris

From the signature savannahs of East Africa teeming with plains game, marvellous landmarks of ancient civilisations, tropical white sand beaches along the warm Indian Ocean, endless deserts with sand dunes burning red at sunrise, lush rainforests echoing with the calls of birds and primates, vibrant cities alive with a colourful melting pot of cultures – there is nowhere else on the planet with such incredible natural beauty and rich cultural traditions as Africa. Whether you join a  scheduled tour  or discover your own Africa on a  tailor-made trip , a visit to this magical continent is guaranteed to take your breath away.

So many of the world’s great beasts call Africa home so a trip to Africa is not complete without a photographic wildlife safari. Embark on a spectacular African Safari to search for the well-known “Big 5” — the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo — which were originally grouped together for being the most difficult to hunt but are now simply thrilling to watch in their natural habitat. However, there are hundreds of other animal and bird species to encounter in Africa, each playing an important role in its local ecosystem.

Don’t forget to tick off the “Ugly 5” – the warthog, hyena, vulture, wildebeest and Marabou Stork. Or the “Little 5” who are named in contradiction to their Big counterparts and encourage safari goers to look at the smaller species present in the African wilderness – the ant lion, leopard tortoise, elephant shrew, rhino beetle, and buffalo weaver. And if you’re very lucky you may see an elusive member of the “Shy 5” – the porcupine, bat-eared fox, aardvark, meerkat, and aardwolf. Witnessing exotic wildlife up close and personal in their natural habitat on a true African Safari is the experience of a lifetime!

Contact Eclipse Travel today to plan your perfect African Tour. We’ll tailor your holiday experience according to your preferences, time, and budget to take you on a holiday you’ll never forget.

Real Guest Reviews

Enchanted Retreat was absolutely fabulous. Warmest welcome from Richard with an extensive selection of delicious treats to make the stay that little bit more special. Great location, less than 5 minutes from the local restaurants and bars . Wonderful view for sunset with plenty of privacy. The tent is outstanding, and would in fact be better described as an apartment. Plenty of space and more amenities than you can shake a stick at – Dishwasher, hot tub, outdoor fire, indoor fire, outdoor lounge suit, hairdryer and even robes, just to name a few. Luxurious bed and linen makes all the difference too. We will be staying here for all future trips to the Hawke’s Bay.

Beautiful stay! Would Highly recommend staying there to anyone. It was a amazing place for a couple days get away and would definitely stay again.

The Enchanted Retreat was everything and so much more than described! Richard and Lucy were excellent to communicate with, and the accomodation is stunning. My partner and I were blown away by the experience. Whether it was the hot tub, the beautiful bathroom or having ‘Alexa’ be able to do just about everything for us, we constantly found ourselves impressed. Would recommend the Enchanted Retreat to anyone looking for a romantic getaway!

Super comfortable and cozy luxury “tent”, that I would highly recommend to anyone who is looking to visit the Hawkes Bay region. We really enjoyed the large king bed, fire place and hot tub!

An amazing treat of a space!! We splashed out for a night at the tent as a treat and it didn’t disappoint!!! Sweating in the hot tub as the rain fell around us, and waking up to views of snow capped mountains from bed a definite highlight

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The place is incredible! Perfect place to relax and unwind. Worth every penny thankyou Richard 🙂

Essential African Safari

9 days | take on the ultimate african adventure from zimbabwe to south africa.

Matobos National Park

Get to know southern Africa’s big three most exciting destinations – Hwange and Kruger national parks and the jaw-dropping Victoria Falls. From South Africa's sprawling modern capital to the best wilderness areas in the world, you'll experience a dizzying diversity of communities, cultures and landscapes in just over a week. Oh, and did we mention the animals you’ll see? You can expect 4x4 safaris in the day, and by night, you'll head out in search of the Big Five - keep your eyes (and ears) peeled.

Trip overview

  • Discover the stunning cascades of Victoria Falls whichever way you please, with so many options to choose from – helicopter, anyone?
  • What is the sound of a roaring lion if not a sweet, soothing lullaby? You'll be camping right in the grounds of Kruger National Park, so you be the judge.
  • Visit the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust to learn about the rehabilitation of wildlife from conflict and poaching and have the possibility of meeting some rescued or orphaned wildlife currently in their care.
  • Pay the famous elephants and lions of Hwange National Park a visit from an open-air 4x4 vehicle on an exciting overland adventure.
  • Cool off with a cold one made from pure Zambezi water with a taste and a tour of the biggest micro-brewery in Victoria Falls.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust. Donations help employ a team of Community Guardians who collaborate with locals to find sustainable solutions to human-wildlife conflict and conservation in Southern Africa.Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
  • The African wild comes alive at sunrise, so there will be some early starts. Don't worry, the thrill of spotting your first lion or rhino will be well worth any loss of sleep.
  • This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent, occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of the ‘big five’. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/au/africa/overland
  • Please note that this trip can be partnered with other adventures into a ‘combo’, which means that some of your fellow travellers may have begun their journey before today, and some may carry on to further destinations at the end of this tour. If you’d like to spend more time in Africa, have a look at the combos that include this trip’s itinerary: Epic African Adventure (YGYSC) & Real Southern Africa (UBYSC).

Mhoro! Welcome to Zimbabwe. Your adventure begins with an important welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive early, why not check out some of the optional activities around Victoria Falls? The Zimbabwe side of the falls offers the broadest view of this colossal natural wonder. Scenic helicopter flights are incredible and takes you over the thundering cascades.

  • Camping (with facilities) (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Victoria Falls - Victoria Falls Entrance Fee - USD50

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time for this, consider arriving a day early so you are able to attend.

You may also notice businesses offering an optional 'Walk with the Lions' experience. We ask all Intrepid travellers to avoid this activity as it is contrary to our Responsible Travel policy. While wildlife viewing is a big part of many of our itineraries, we strive to only view animals in their natural habitats and to do so with the greatest level of respect. The lion walking industry directly contributes to the captive breeding and canned hunting of lions.

Guess what? You’re at the edge of the greatest curtain of falling water in the world. After a leader-led orientation walk of the town, enjoy a day of free time to take up one of many activities on offer in the area including a helicopter flight, gorge swing, or even a white-water rafting experience! There are many ways to take in the thundering sight and sound of the falls. These staggering cascades are about a mile wide, falling 108 metres into a narrow gorge below. In the wet season, the spray rises high and the falls become a torrent; in the dry season, the lack of spray gives way to a nice view of the little islets in the river below. Meet up in the afternoon for a local brewery tour and tasting in town and get to know your new travel pals. Then perhaps kick on with an optional sunset cruise down the Zambezi River .

  • Victoria Falls - Brewery Tour and Tasting
  • Victoria Falls - Bridge Tour - USD68
  • Victoria Falls - Standard Sunset Cruise (excludes USD10 NP Fee) - USD45
  • Victoria Falls - Traditional Village Tour - USD55
  • Victoria Falls - Bridge Swing - USD168
  • Victoria Falls - Jet Boat (Seasonal - excludes USD10 NP Fee) - USD110
  • Victoria Falls - Whitewater rafting (Seasonal - excludes USD10 NP Fee) - USD126
  • Victoria Falls - Helicopter flight (12 mins - excludes USD25 Fuel & NP Fee) - USD150
  • Victoria Falls - River Song Sunset Cruise (excludes USD10 NP Fee) - USD75
  • Victoria Falls - Helicopter flight (25 mins - excludes USD30 Fuel & NP Fee) - USD284

Some optional activities require the National Park and Fuel surcharges to be paid for in cash. Please refer to the above list for further information.

Your leader will take you to a local activity centre where a range of activities will be on offer. We have not completed a risk assessment on all activities and only those listed in the above trip notes are recommended. If you are unsure about a certain activity, please discuss it with your leader. It is against company policy for leaders to facilitate the booking of any activities that have not do not adhere to our company’s Responsible Travel policy and ethos. This includes organising transport to and from these activities in our vehicles.

If you decide to go on a scenic helicopter flight, choose Zambezi Helicopter Company (CAA Zimbabwe), which is the only operator Intrepid endorses.

Leave Victoria Falls behind and head to Hwange National Park (approximately 5 hours, depending on traffic). En route, stop via the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust – one of the Intrepid Foundation’s projects - where you can learn about the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife, human-wildlife conflict and their role in anti-poaching. There may also be a chance to meet any rescued or orphaned wildlife currently in their care. Afterwards, explore the stunning arena of Hwange in an open 4x4 vehicle. This national park became the royal hunting grounds of the Ndebele warrior-king Mzilikazi in the early 19th century and was set aside as a national park in 1929. Today, Hwange boasts a massive selection of wildlife, with over 100 species of mammals and nearly 400 bird species. But it's the elephants this place is famous for – here you'll find one of the largest elephant populations in Africa.

  • Hwange National Park - 4x4 Game drive
  • Victoria Falls - Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust Visit

At tonight's camp, there is optional accommodation upgrades (subject to availability). Please speak to an Intrepid booking agent or your leader for more information.

Make tracks for Matobos with a short detour through Bulawayo, checking out its cool colonial buildings, before heading to your camp for the next two nights. Home to a large population of black and white rhinoceros that can be tracked on foot, Matobo National Park is also the site of the grave of Cecil John Rhodes, the founder of Rhodesia and the De Beers diamond company. The Matobos area has great spiritual and cultural significance to the local people and there are many sites within the park where important ceremonies still take place. For those interested in the culinary side of southern African food, tonight your cook can provide an in-depth cooking class while you help prepare this evening’s delicious meal.

  • Matobos National Park - Cook-led Cooking Class - Free

Your campground has shared facilities, wi-fi access and some optional upgrades.

Good morning from mighty Matobos. You’re free to do as you please, but what is highly recommended is heading to Matobo Hills and spending the day tracking rhinos and other game animals with the help of your guide on an optional tour. The park is home to so much wildlife, including klipspringers, leopards, warthogs and springhares. Along the way, learn about the flora in the area. After your tour lunch, head to another region of the park to find old bushman paintings, see rock formations and learn some history of the area. Then it's off to nearby African villages to meet some of the local community. It’s definitely a day you won’t want to miss.

  • Matobo National Park - Rhino Tracking - USD140

Up early, today will be a long day with a very busy border post – the only direct border crossing between Zimbabwe and South Africa. The drive is approximately 400km long, but it can take us anything between 6 and 8 hours to reach our destination. Today’s destination is the Mapungubwe National Park in South Africa. This park is set hard against the northern border of South Africa, joining Zimbabwe and Botswana. It is an open, expansive savannah landscape at the intersection of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers. Sip sundowners overlooking the rivers or visit Mpungubwe Hill, where a far developed African civilisation prospered in the 13th century. The Interpretation Centre is the ideal place to catch up on all of this.

On occasion we are unable to secure campsites within the Mapungubwe National Park. In this instance we will camp outside the park.

After breakfast, set off for renowned Kruger National Park. This world-famous park is known for the Big Five game of Africa – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino. On top of that, it's home to some 336 kinds of trees, 49 fish species and over 500 species of bird. See how many of these you can spot on a game drive in your overland vehicle. You cover over 300km, but taking all day, you’ll be sure to spend time staking out the locals. Continue from your safari to your overnight camp, where there's the option of a further game drive – this time at night. You never know what’s going to come out and play on your safari after dark!

  • Kruger National Park - Overland Vehicle Game drive
  • Kruger National Park - Night Game Drive - ZAR290

On occasion, especially during the peak periods during May – September & December, we are unable to secure campsites within Kruger National Park. In this instance we will camp outside the park.

Wake up early for a light breakfast of coffee and rusks before embarking on a full-day game drive in the truck. Today is another full day in Kruger, heading down to the central part of the park towards your last campsite. Stop at some of the designated picnic spots for a bite to eat en route to camp. Depending on the season, you might catch a saddle-billed stork with its colourful red beak, or maybe a blue waxbill. In the afternoon when it's warm, take some time out to chill. This evening there will be another optional night drive to spot nocturnal animals and perhaps even a predator or two.

  • Kruger National Park - Sunset Game Drive (from) - ZAR380

On occasion, especially during the peak months of May - September we are unable to secure campsites within the Kruger National Park. In this instance we will camp outside the park.

Venture out for one last safari adventure this morning and soak up all Kruger has to offer. Keep your eyes peeled, ‘cause you never know what will pop out from behind the shrubs! Continue back to Johannesburg (approximately 9–10 hours). This trip finishes on arrival in Johannesburg at a designated hotel drop-off point.

No accommodation is provided for tonight, however if you’d like to spend more time in Johannesburg, we’ll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). If you're planning on catching an outgoing international flight today, it's important to book it for 10 pm or later, to allow for delays and transfers to the airport.

8 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 6 dinners

Overland vehicle, Open safari vehicle

Camping (with facilities) (7 nights), Camping (with basic facilities) (1 night)

Dates and availability

Important notes.

1. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement applies to all nights of your trip and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.

2. This trip finishes upon arrival in Johannesburg on Day 9. Please do not book any flights until after 10pm this evening.

3. On occasion, especially during the peak months of May to September and December we are not able to secure campsites within the Kruger National Park. In this instance we will camp at a backpackers outside the park.

5. Border crossing delays in the region have been sporadic and difficult to predict. What takes an hour one day may take four hours the next. This may affect the order of activities in the itinerary. We understand this uncertainty can be frustrating, and we strongly recommend packing a bit of patience and flexibility.

South Island

The rugged and wild wildernesses of new zealand’s south island are some of the most spectacular in the world..

With dramatic fjords, crystal clear lakes, wild mountains, exciting ski-fields and pristine hidden bays, the variety of scenery is one of the South Island’s biggest draw cards. But there is far more than just pretty scenery that draws visitors to its shores. New Zealand’s oldest settlement, Christchurch is home to interesting museums and numerous wildlife parks, where the country’s most iconic species – the flightless kiwi – can be seen.

Renowned for its world-class wines, many of the country’s best vineyards are on the North Island. The top of the South Island however does have a number of excellent boutique vineyards around the towns of Nelson and Blenheim. Outside of award-winning sauvignon blanc, the region also encompasses the tiny but exquisite Abel Tasman National Park and the beautiful drowned valleys of Marlborough Sound.

The small town of Franz Josef on the Waiho River is the gateway to two of the island’s iconic glaciers – Fox and Franz Josef glaciers. Both glaciers can be explored on foot or by helicopter whilst Westland Tai Poutini National Park is on the town’s doorstep. There are a number of walks suitable for everyone that pass through beautiful forests including Callery Gorge and Canavans Knob walk. Nearby Mount Cook, also known as ‘Aoraki’ is New Zealand’s highest peak (3,724m) and is flanked by Tasman, the country’s largest glacier.

To the south, Milford Sound is one of the country’s most visited destinations. This remote, steep-sided fjord runs 15km inland from the Tasman Sea. Most visitors cruise Milford Sound, but flight-seeing is also possible. Seals and dolphins are common whilst it is possible to see whales and the endangered Fiordland crested penguin.

Undoubtably the South Island’s major highlight, Queenstown has been dubbed the Adventure Capital of the World, boasting some 220 adventure travel activities from mountain biking and jet boating to bungy jumping and skydiving. Its picturesque setting on the shores of Lake Wakatipu with the splendid “Remarkables” mountain range as a back drop make it a popular holiday destination. With four ski fields in close proximity it offers sensational snow sport opportunities making the town a year-round attraction.

South Island Highlights

Christchurch New Zealand

Christchurch

South Island’s largest urban settlement – Christchurch – is also the country’s oldest. Rattled by major earthquakes in 2011, the city was rapidly rebuilt and is now greener and more accessible than ever. Christchurch is home to a major airport, interesting museums and numerous wildlife parks where you can view the emblematic flightless kiwi.

Walking on the cliffs of Dunedin

The principal city of Otago, historic Dunedin is packed with prominent heritage buildings including Speight’s Brewery, Larnarch Castle and the railway station. To the east lies the Otago Peninsula which shelters the world’s only mainland breeding colony of royal albatross, alongside rare species such as yellow-eyed penguins and seals.

Riding in Queenstown

The undisputed adrenalin capital of New Zealand, Queenstown boasts some 220 adventure travel activities from mountain biking and jet boating to bungy jumping and skydiving. Set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu this picturesque resort town is also a centre for snow sports in winter with four ski fields in close proximity.

Milford Sound South Island

Milford Sound

One of New Zealand’s most visited destinations, this remote, steep-sided fjord runs 15km inland from the Tasman Sea, with two permanent waterfalls and dozens of temporary cascades after heavy rain. Most visitors cruise Milford Sound, but flight-seeing is also possible. Seals and dolphins are common and it is possible to see whales and the endangered Fiordland crested penguin.

Mt Cook New Zealand

Franz Josef & Mount Cook

Named after an Austrian emperor, the township of Franz Josef is gateway to two of South Island’s most famous glaciers, whose ever-changing terrain can be explored on foot and by helicopter. Also known as ‘Aoraki’, Mount Cook is New Zealand’s loftiest summit (3,724m), and is flanked by Tasman, the country’s largest glacier.

Marlborough Sound

Top of the south

Best known for its stunning coastline, mild climate and world-famous white wines, this region encompasses the tiny but exquisite Abel Tasman National Park and the drowned valleys of Marlborough Sounds. Stow away to secluded Arthurs Bay or savour acclaimed sauvignon blanc with sustainably caught fresh seafood in historic Nelson, South Island’s oldest city
