Akiba's Trip 2 Is an Absurd, Action-Packed Supernatural Romance

It’s subtitled “Undead & Undressed” for a reason.

I thought vampire games needed something other than the fanged, pale-skinned bloodsuckers and gun-touting hunters to stand out. I didn’t think it would quite look like a high-school boy ripping the clothes off the backs of strangers, though.

Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed , also known as Akiba’s Trip 2 , isn’t a new game. However, Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed Director’s Cut is. The original game launched in Japan for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in 2013 and later migrated to North America in 2014. The Director’s Cut features much of the same content with an alternate route for a new romanceable character, Kati. I played it on the PlayStation 4 at PAX East and was delighted to find out how absurd yet satisfying the action was.

Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed stars Nanashi, a teenage otaku who was lured into a trap and turned into a vampire. These vampires, also called “Synthisters,” feast on humans’ social energy and will to live. A mysterious girl named Shizuku saves Nanashi with a kiss before he totally loses his humanity and recruits him to join the Akiba Freedom Fighters, a group hunting the Synthisters. It's up to the ragtag group to uncover the Synthisters’ plot and save Akibahara from the soul-suckers before it’s too late.

This isn’t your average vampire-hunting RPG where you run around slashing at enemies with silver swords or impaling them with wooden stakes. You identify Synthisters with a camera — because vampires look different than humans in photos — and confront them. Then, you expose them to the sun by forcibly stripping them down to their underwear. Then, their bodies melt in the daylight.

Nanashi’s superior vampire strength and reflexes enable him to go hand-to-hand with these bloodsuckers and, more importantly, punch and kick them until their clothes fly off.

Akiba’s Trip might sound like a perverted romcom (and it kind of is), but at least it has a surprisingly robust combat system. At PAX East, I played the demo on a controller where the right-hand buttons corresponded to high and low kicks and punches just like in a fighting game.

Behold, Nanashi is punching a pantsless enemy into the air.

You can’t rely on just one button because vampires have different clothing types that can only be removed with specific moves. For example, low kicks wear down their pants. Meanwhile, a headshot can eventually knock off any hats or headgear. It feels satisfying to combo vampires with fast-paced kicks and punches, especially with the layer of strategy that low and high attacks add. You also have to read whether the AI would aim high or low as you approached them.

You might notice a purple aura radiating off the enemy after you land enough hits. That’s the cue that Nanashi can pull off a super move that rips the enemy’s clothing clean off their body. The super move feels especially satisfying to pull off because of the over-the-top animation it triggers when you do it and how much faster it ends a fight.

Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed also delves into the realm of romance. I didn’t get to flirt with any of the girls because of the brief time I had with the demo, but the game leads to different endings based on who Nanashi chooses as his love interest. The new character Kati, an Akibahara maid, is only available as a route in the Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed Director’s Cut and downloadable content for PC and PlayStation 4.

If you’re even remotely titillated by the core premise and want something with a surprising compelling combat system, then this trip is definitely worth the strip.

Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed Director’s Cut will launch for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on April 20, 2023. If you already have the original Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed on PC or PlayStation 4, you can download Kati’s route separately without buying the entire game.

Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed has multiple gameplay routes.

There are four total routes, one each for Tohko, Shizuku, Rin, and Shion.

The game is split into three chapters. The first two chapters are always the same, with only slight deviations possible. Each girl has their own unique chapter 3 route. 

The dialogue choices you make in chapters 1 and 2 determine which route you'll take in chapter 3.

You'll need 50 or more points of affection with a girl in chapters 1 and 2 to reach her chapter 3 route. If you don't get at least 50 points of affection with any girl by the end of chapter 2, you'll be placed on Tohko's route.

A girl's affection level is raised by picking specific dialogue choices during cut scenes.

Picking a dialogue choice that raises a girl's affection does not lower any other girl's affection. 

Affection is a hidden value you'll have to keep track of on your own. However, it's pretty easy to do so, especially with the information in this guide.

Dialogue choices that raise a girl's affection will do so by either +5, +10, or +15. There is not an equal number of choices per girl. Some girl's routes are harder to reach than others.

Each girl's route has two endings: a "normal ending" (which can be considered that girl's bad ending) and a "true ending" (which can be considered that girl's good ending). Don't get confused by the phrase "true ending", as there isn't one canon true ending, it's just the label the game uses for a girl's good ending.

You'll need 100 or more points of affection with a girl by the end of chapter 3 to reach her true ending. If you get less than 100 points of affection by the end of chapter 3, you'll receive the normal ending of whichever girl's route you're on.

The following table shows how many dialogue choices are available to raise each girl's affection in each chapter. It also shows the total number of affection points available for each girl in each chapter.

If a tie-breaker needs to be instituted to decide which route you'll be put on in chapter 3, the order of priority is as follows:

Tohko > Shizuku > Rin > Shion

Kati doesn't have a route or ending in the original release of the game. 

During the first playthrough of the game, there's no visual indicator about how dialogue choices affect a girl's affection. However, future playthroughs will display an icon of one of the girls' faces next to dialogue choices that boost that girl's affection.

Nana has a special ending that can be unlocked by successfully completing a series of specific side missions known as Sister Missions.

Unlike normal side missions, you accept Sister Missions by speaking to Nana (or Pops, at one point) at specific points during the game. You'll need to have completed all prior Sister Missions to be given the next one. Nana's overhead name tag will be red if she has a mission to give you.

Nana's ending does not change the ending of the route you're on, it's just an extra scene that plays after the route ending you earned.

Aside from the extra ending scene, achieving Nana's ending also unlocks additional items for sale at 5Day's in Electric Town Plaza.

While Kati and I are out shopping, we ran into Soga.

Ancient One...? Plans coming to fruition...? I don't understand a single thing he said.

Either way, I need to focus on protecting Kati right now.

Soga claimed he awakened an ancient existence sleeping inside Kati. Just what on earth is going on?

Either way, I need to head back to [MOGRA] so Kati and rest.

After returning to MOGRA and letting Kati rest, I though about what I'd heard. What was Soga talking about when he mentioned an "ancient existence?" And what's the purpose of awakening it?

I've been wracking my brain but can't come up with any answers. Besides, all I can think about right now is keeping Kati safe.

A Mysterious Request [ ]

• Difficulty: 3 star
• Destination: Junk Street

After returning to MOGRA, Pops asked me to take care of some errands. After what just went down, Kati still insisted on going so nobody would be worried for her.

I decided to head to [Junk Street] with Kati.

Rescue Kati [ ]

• Destination: Radio Kaikan Area
• Partner Required: None

Kati and I came to Junk Street to take care of some errands, but agents in black suits suddenly appeared and kidnapped Kati.

I wanted to go after her, but the agents are standing in my way. There's no way in hell I'm going to let them get away with this.

I was able to take care of those agents somehow... But Kati's nowhere to be seen. What's going on here?

It seems the kidnapper ran towards the [Radio Kaikan Area]. She probably won't be happy if I don't go after her, so I better hurry.

I chased after Kati to the Radio Kaikan Area, where there were more agents waiting...

It's hard to believe that Soga would do something like this... So who else could it be?

I'll first need to take care of these pesky agents.

If there's a second wave, then logically there'll be a third...? The agents won't stop coming.

If there are this many people, then the ones who kidnapped Kati have to be from some major organization.

But there's no way there's going to be a fourth wave. I need to hurry and save Kati.

Back On Topic [ ]

• Destination: None / MOGRA

Take Care of Requests

Even asleep, Kati still looks exhausted. Who were those agents and what did they want from her? Well, without any leads to follow, there's no point obsessing over it. I'll just have to focus on my work with the Freedom Fighters.

I managed to kill a lot of time doing requests. Kati should be up by now. I hope she was able to relax for a bit. I should head back to [MOGRA].

Doing work for the Freedom Fighters helped put my mind at ease. There's no better cure for anxiety than this town's energy.

I feel like I can talk to Kati without putting all my worries on her.

Sakaguchi Explains It All [ ]

• Destination: Side Streets

Proceed to the Side Streets

Kati looks much better with some rest. Pops had another request so I decided to take Kati and head to the [Side Streets]. She thinks the fresh air will do her some good.

Sakaguchi from Daishihon Pharmaceuticals was waiting for us on the [Side Streets], Kati was unable to hide her shock after he explained what was happening to her body. We should head back to [MOGRA] so she can calm down.

If what Sakaguchi said was true, then Kati's life is in danger. But at the same time, there's a part of me that can't believe his words.

On top of that, if I decide to accept Sakaguchi's offer, it would mean betraying the Freedom Fighters. What should I do? I can't find the right answer.

Rendezvous with Shion [ ]

• Destination: Akihabara Park

Shion asked me to meet her at [Akihabara Park]. Just what does she want to talk about? It could be about Sakaguchi, so I should go and find out.

Shion's Warning [ ]

Return to MOGRA

It seems like Shion has a general understanding about what's going on. She made me curious about Daishion Pharmaceuticals' involvement in all this. A lot is in motion right now, but I can't decide on what to do on my own. I should return to [MOGRA] and talk to Kati.

I understand why Shion is worried about Kati and me. But, I also can't ignore the idea that she might've approached me just to get intel on what's going on inside Kati. I'd be foolish to ignore the kind of person she is.

Kati's Diagnosis [ ]

• Difficulty: 4 stars

Kati greeted me after I returned to MOGRA, but she doesn't look well. She wants some fresh air, so I decided to tag along with her to the [Side Streets].

Letter of Challenge? [ ]

• Destination: Electric Town Plaza

Proceed to Electric Town Plaza

There was a letter waiting for me when I returned to MOGRA, sender unknown. Still, it's hard not to imagine this might be connected to Kati's situation, so I decided to follow the letter's instruction and head to the [Electric Town Plaza].

Zenya's Invitation [ ]

It wasn't a love letter. Zenya was the one waiting at the location.

I shouldn't have come. Not even a million years would make me believe otherwise.

At this point, I guess I don't have much of a choice. I'll humor him...

Just as he said, the only way to save Kati might be to accept his offer. But that would mean leaving the Freedom Fighters and joining Zenya, which is tantamount to betrayal.

But making enemies of the Freedom Fighters is nothing compared to Kati's life. With my mind made up, I decided to head back to [MOGRA].

Parting with Friends [ ]

Go to Your Sister's Room

I've decided to accept the offer from Sakaguchi and Zenya... and leave the Freedom Fighters. I could always turn to Shion, but we just don't have time to waste and Sakaguchi and Zenya at least seems to have a plan in mind.

My little sister asked me to come to her room. I've probably been acting extra awkward lately and she can sense something's up. I should head to my [Sister's Room] to talk to her.

My little sister promised to keep enhancing my clothing and weapons in secret. She must've been thinking this over for a while now.

She's still in my corner, and for that reason too, I have no choice but to save Kati, no matter the cost.

We'll rendezvous with Zenya at the [Organization's Hideout].

Shizuku's Feelings [ ]

Shizuku intercepted us on our way to meet Zenya at the Organization's Hideout. Now that I think about it, all this started the day I met her. I do still want her wish to come true, but I've chosen Kati. Shizuku and I are now on different paths.

After speaking with her, I decided to continue to the [Organization's Hideout].

The Secret 4th Alliance Forms [ ]

In order to bait Soga, Zenya and I decided to head to [Main Street Northwest].

I've committed to this path, so there's no turning back. I have a role to play now, and I'll perform it to the best of my abilities.
