Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of companies are you recruiting for in the hospitality, travel and leisure industry, what kind of roles are you recruiting for in the hospitality, travel and leisure industry, what is retained executive search compared to professional recruitment.

Our retained executive search services is a specialized recruitment service that focuses on sourcing and placing high-level management and leadership positions, such as C-suite executives, SVPs and VPs within an organization. In this approach, the hiring company enters into an exclusive agreement with the recruitment firm and pays an upfront retainer fee.

The search process is more thorough and time-intensive, involving extensive research, in-depth candidate assessments, and personalized attention to the client’s needs. Professional recruitment, on the other hand, targets mid-level roles and individual contributor positions within an organization.

The process is typically faster and more streamlined, utilizing also a direct approach of passive candidates, the recruitment firm’s existing candidate network, job advertisements, and other sourcing techniques to find the right candidates. In this scenario, the fee structure is largely based on contingency, meaning most of the fee is due only when a successful placement is made.

"...The training resources are abundant as are the suppliers that Travel Quest Network has relationships with. The commission rates are top tier for all of them. Other agents have been so helpful with sharing information, making suggestions, and offering encouragement. As others have said, it really is like a family..."

"Wow, wow, wow. I can't say enough good things about TQN. I changed recently after a rough first year at a small host agency that was quite honestly a mess. I love not having to fight tooth and nail for my commissions. They pop up on time under "Commission Manager" and it's so easy to follow along. The times I've had to reach out to the team they've been SO nice and helped right away!"

"I cannot recommend them enough. I have learned so much through them, their Weekly Chat, Monthly All Call, their private FB page, and University. It's also they are connected with Travel Leaders, you have much better training and resources. I personally came from another Host, that specialized in one thing and not the thing I wanted to specialize in. Here I have found my home. OH and the CEO answers FB questions, how cool is that!!"

Alexandra Benezra's PR Agency Expands Into U.S. And Hospitality

LONDON - The tectonic plates of public relations are changing around.

Alexandra Benezra, founder of ASB PR, a boutique agency that started in London in 2021, has moved over the pond and is now popping up in New York City, Los Angeles and Mexico, and moving beyond traditional fashion and beauty communications .

The agency is adding hospitality to its roster of services that include events, talent management, influencer and brand partnerships, and VIP dressing.

For Benezra, the most visible result is coming out of working with VIPs, which is the core focus of the Los Angeles arm of the agency.

"VIP press accounts for more than 70 percent of the brands I look after. It's such a fast environment for brands and there's so much competition out there. If Hailey Bieber is wearing your brand, you can be sure it's going to be plastered across social media and the press with an amazing return in terms of sales," said Benezra in an interview.

The reach goes beyond whether a celebrity posts about the brand or not for visibility - as fashion fan accounts do that now. An Instagram account like @kendalljennercloset has accumulated nearly half a million followers, meanwhile @haileyrbiebercloset has a following of 244,000.

Benezra tends to a mostly European clientele that includes brands such as Alexandra Miro, Edge of Ember, Charo Ruiz, Rouje, Boteh, Jia Jia , Oceanus and more.

"All of my clients' number-one markets are the U.S. and many of them need a global agency rather than depending on several agencies at once," she said.

Her latest client is Casa Yuma, a resort in Oaxaca, Mexic o, which dovetails with her roster of resortwear labels.

In recent times, brands and businesses are killing two birds with one stone by teaming with fashion PRs as a means to invite in a stylish crowd that's willing to spend. The bigger PR agencies now have separate lifestyle teams that tackle hospitality.

The Swiss-born publicist studied at Glion Institute of Higher Education, a private hospitality management school in Montreux, Switzerland, followed by a three-month internship at Lanvin in Paris that led her to a master's degree in fashion promotion at Istituto Marangoni in London .

Benezra started her career at Browns , where she worked for nearly three years, but then had the idea for her own agency during parental leave away from work.

"When I used to work at Browns, it was all about championing new talent and this is still really important to me as an agency. I want to really keep it as a boutique and be very close to my client," she said.

UN Tourism and Croatia to Establish Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism

  • 12 Apr 2024

UN Tourism is to work with the Government Croatia and the University of Zagreb to establish a research and development centre focused on sustainable tourism.

Croatia currently serves on UN Tourism’s Committee on Tourism and Sustainability, having chaired it between 2019 and 2023. Alongside the Government’s record of promoting responsible and sustainable tourism practices, this clear leadership and support for UN Tourism’s core values make it the ideal location to host a collaborative platform to drive innovation and catalyse positive change in the tourism sector.

Croatia leads by example in growing tourism in a sustainable manner

This landmark centre will engage stakeholders from the public and private sectors, academia, and civil society to will address some of the most critical challenges facing tourism, including:

  • Reducing the Environmental Impact of Tourism: The centre will prioritize initiatives to minimize waste generation and plastic usage, thereby mitigating the environmental footprint of tourism activities.
  • Increasing Usage of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency: By promoting the adoption of renewable energy sources and implementing energy-efficient practices, the centre aims to reduce carbon emissions associated with tourism operations.
  • Accelerating Adaptation to Climate Change: Recognizing the urgent need to address climate-related risks, the centre will support adaptation strategies to enhance the resilience of tourism destinations and communities.
  • Preserving Social Sustainability and Local Communities: The centre will work to safeguard the cultural heritage and livelihoods of local communities by promoting responsible tourism practices and equitable distribution of benefits.
  • Enhancing Evidence-Based Policy Making: Through rigorous research and data analysis, the centre will provide policymakers with the evidence needed to formulate effective policies that balance tourism development with environmental and social considerations.
  • Providing Relevant and Updated Research: The centre will serve as a hub for cutting-edge research and knowledge exchange, delivering timely insights and best practices for the sustainable development of tourism.

In Zagreb, the Minister of Tourism and Sport of Croatia Nikolina Brnjac and UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create the cutting-edge research institution.

Welcoming the collaboration, Secretary-General Pololikashvili said: “Croatia leads by example in growing tourism in a sustainable manner. The new research centre in Zagreb will contribute to UN Tourism’s commitment to data-driven policymaking at the regional, national and destination level, ensuring tourism grows responsibly and inclusively, for the benefit of communities everywhere.”

Minister of Tourism and Sport of Croatia Nikolina Brnjac adds: “I am proud that UN Tourism, the most relevant tourism organization globally, has recognized our efforts in Croatian tourism management reform and our strong commitment to sustainable tourism and put forward the initiative to create the first UN Tourism Centre for sustainable tourism in Croatia together with the Ministry of Tourism and Sport of the Republic of Croatia. With the University of Zagreb as a partner in the establishment of this Centre, I am convinced that this Centre will be successful and provide very relevant research for future sustainable development of tourism.”

USA Launches New Hospitality and Tourism Concentrations

Joy Crawford

file photo of a table in an events space data-lightbox='featured'

The University of South Alabama Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management in the College of Education and Professional Studies is launching two new concentrations, global leadership and events marketing and management, under its bachelor’s degree program.

For those who seek to shape the future of a vibrant and evolving industry, South’s hospitality and tourism concentrations will start in the fall semester of 2024.

“With the new concentrations in global leadership and events marketing and management, our program in Hospitality and Tourism Management is uniquely positioned to provide students with the knowledge and skills that hospitality and tourism employers demand,” said Dr. Angela Barlow, dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies. “This will, in turn, lead to successful careers for our students in the fast-growing areas of leisure and hospitality. Whether a student desires to be the operations manager for a cruise line or an event planner for a resort, this program will help them grow as professionals through meaningful experiences provided by our community and industry partners.”

The servant leadership being modeled to South students will help them stand out in an industry that will produce future leaders through innovative business-education partnerships.

“The new concentrations in global leadership and events marketing and management were developed through a robust planning process and were not arbitrary,” said Dr. Khal Nusair, chair of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism and Management. “Over the duration of a three-step planning method, we analyzed hospitality and tourism programs at the state and national levels, sought the feedback of our advisory board and gathered data from industry partners and alumni.”

In the global leadership concentration, students build problem-solving, communication, critical thinking and analytical skills to excel in the global hospitality and tourism industry.

“It’s important to note these specialized programs will strengthen our existing industry ties and develop new partnership opportunities with stakeholders from the hospitality and tourism industry,” Nusair said. “Thanks to hospitality and tourism industry partners’ guidance and support during the program restructuring efforts, the program has been positively transformed. This couldn’t have been accomplished without their dedication and commitment to our success.”

According to President and CEO of Visit Mobile David Clark, who also serves as president of South’s Hospitality and Tourism Advisory Board Executive Committee, the new concentrations will open doors to many career opportunities.

“USA continues to raise the bar with its education and career offerings to help students earn the right to lead,” Clark said. “Adding global leadership and events marketing and management will significantly enhance students’ ability to make a huge impact on their career path and advancement.”

What the New Overtime Rule Means for Workers

Collage shows four professionals in business casual clothing.

One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Simply put, every worker’s time has value. A cornerstone of that promise is the  Fair Labor Standards Act ’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The  Department of Labor ’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.

Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities. Strong overtime protections help build America’s middle class and ensure that workers are not overworked and underpaid.

Some workers are specifically exempt from the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime protections, including bona fide executive, administrative or professional employees. This exemption, typically referred to as the “EAP” exemption, applies when:

1. An employee is paid a salary,

2. The salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount, and

3. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.

While the department increased the minimum salary required for the EAP exemption from overtime pay every 5 to 9 years between 1938 and 1975, long periods between increases to the salary requirement after 1975 have caused an erosion of the real value of the salary threshold, lessening its effectiveness in helping to identify exempt EAP employees.

The department’s new overtime rule was developed based on almost 30 listening sessions across the country and the final rule was issued after reviewing over 33,000 written comments. We heard from a wide variety of members of the public who shared valuable insights to help us develop this Administration’s overtime rule, including from workers who told us: “I would love the opportunity to...be compensated for time worked beyond 40 hours, or alternately be given a raise,” and “I make around $40,000 a year and most week[s] work well over 40 hours (likely in the 45-50 range). This rule change would benefit me greatly and ensure that my time is paid for!” and “Please, I would love to be paid for the extra hours I work!”

The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA.

Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay. As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees.

Who will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule? Currently most salaried workers earning less than $684/week. Starting July 1, 2024, most salaried workers earning less than $844/week. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers earning less than $1,128/week. Starting July 1, 2027, the eligibility thresholds will be updated every three years, based on current wage data. DOL.gov/OT

The rule will also increase the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (who are not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA if certain requirements are met) from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year on July 1, 2024, and then set it equal to $151,164 per year on Jan. 1, 2025.

Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will be updated every three years so they keep pace with changes in worker salaries, ensuring that employers can adapt more easily because they’ll know when salary updates will happen and how they’ll be calculated.

The final rule will restore and extend the right to overtime pay to many salaried workers, including workers who historically were entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA because of their lower pay or the type of work they performed.

We urge workers and employers to visit  our website to learn more about the final rule.
