Agumbe is a little village in Shimoga District in the Malnad region of Karnataka. The village is also known as ‘ The Cherrapunji of the South ’. This scenic village lies in the Western Ghats belt at about 643m above sea level with some of the last remaining lowland rainforests.

Agumbe receives the heaviest rainfall in the southern part, which makes it a perfect home to some of the scenic waterfalls, dense forests, and rivers. The village is also home to India’s one and only Rainforest Research Station. Agumbe is also one of the most untouched and mesmerizing hills stations in south India .

The best time to visit Agumbe

You can visit this little village anywhere from November to February. You should avoid traveling to Agumbe during the heavy monsoon period, which begins in June and lasts till September.

Nearest airport: Mangaluru Airport is about 95 km away from Agumbe village. Nearest railhead: Udupi Railway Station is about 50 km away from Agumbe. By bus: You can directly take a bus from Bangalore to Agumbe or a bus going to Thirthahalli and then another bus from there to Agumbe.

4. Jogi Gundi Falls – Witness the raw and unusual beauty of nature

This is not like any other waterfall where water falls from a height or in multiple folds. Jogi Gundi Falls come out of a cave running through the hills. The waterfall is about 4 km from the main town and the last 1 km needs to be trekked.

5. Onake Abbi Falls – A magnificent sight you shouldn’t miss

Image Source Onake Abbi waterfall is just a few kilometers from Agumbe Village, situated at the edge of the Western Ghats. The muddy trail takes you to a magnificent sight from where you can see the waterfall gushing down cutting through the rocks. The waterfall is completely dry in summer, so the best time to see Onake Abbi is between November to February.

Yes, you can stay at Swami’s house and probably read the book to feel his and his family’s presence around you. Kasturi Akka, the owner of the house offers a warm welcome to all the guests with all the basic comfort. She uses the money earned to run the house and feed the homeless people of the village.

If you don’t want to stay in Doddamane for any reason, you can try other Belachikatte Homestay, Amthi Homestay, Hingaara- The Nature Stay, and other homestays in Agumbe.

Agumbe is known as Karnataka's Chirapunji, as it receives highest rainfall in the state.

Agumbe is often seen as a stopover destination while traveling between Shivamogga and Udupi but Agumbe and nearby areas offer several attractions worth visiting. If you can afford to spend more time, you can dedicate a day or two exclusively for Agumbe.

In this post I am explaining about various places of interest and attractions around Agumbe, Karnataka

1. Sunset Point: Most popular spot in Agumbe, best visited during evening time-enjoy great view of the land below and spectacular sunset views.

2. Malekadu Lake & Boating: About a km ahead of sunset viewpoint, at the checkpost, you can find a lake. This lake is called Malekadu (rainforest). Boating can be enjoyed here and a long walking trail runs around the periphery of the lake. Entry is ticketed and operates during day time only.

3. Second view point (now closed)

Slightly ahead of sunset viewpoint is another area where you can climb and enjoy another view. Most visitors miss this and drive further. Didn't find anything exceptional here but worth a try if you are interested. Photo below for reference. (December 2021 update: I saw the access to this place closed)

5. Malgudi Days House

Popular serial Malgudi days was shot largely in and around Agumbe. The main house is in the town centre, you may make a visit with permission from owners. The old lady is no more unfortunately. More details on Agumbe Malgudi day house here

Located on a mountain pass that connects the plains of Karnataka with the coastal region, Agumbe is covered with verdant forests, sparkling streams and little cascades, making the region in the Western Ghats virtually a Garden of Eden. It receives an average rainfall of about 8000 mm and thus called “Cherrapunji‎ of South India”. The view of the Sun setting into the Arabian Sea from Agumbe is not to be missed as it offers a clear line of sight of about 40 km. The world-famous herpetologist Romulus Whitaker has set up a tropical research station called the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS) to study the endangered King Cobra species, which is also a major attraction. The famous TV serial ‘Malgudi Days’ was shot across these areas.

  • 14 Hairpin bends: Climbing up and down the hill requires negotiating 14 sharp hairpin bends. Full size buses and trucks are not allowed on the hill. Drive yourself if you are up to it or take a ride in a bus and watch how local drivers carefully negotiate the turns.
  • Malgudi Days: Several scenes of popular television serial Malgudi Days, based on RK Narayan’s novel, were shot around this place. This is one such place where you can not only surround yourself with the beauty of greenery and fresh air but also delve into nostalgia as you visit the Malgudi Days house, reminiscing those memorable days of storytelling and visualizing how the house and the entire surrounding could have possibly looked and felt like.
  • Lake & Boating: A small lake with boating facility is available near the forest check post.

Where can I see a Florida rocket launch in Indian River County, St. Lucie County and Martin County?

The best views to watch a rocket launch from neighboring Brevard County, aka the Space Coast, is here along the beach. Visibility in Indian River County,  St. Lucie County  and Martin County, part of the Treasure Coast, will depend on weather conditions, and people should make sure not to block traffic or rights of way on bridges and to follow posted rules at beaches. Look due north. Here are some recommended spots, from closest to Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Kennedy Space Center to farthest:
