AIDAcosma kicks off Dubai Harbour cruise season a week after TUI from Port Rashid

Dubai’s new seafront district Dubai Harbour has received its first cruise ship of the 2022/23 Arabian Gulf cruise season with the arrival of AIDAcosma.

AIDAcosma is a German mega ship for AIDA Cruises , carrying more than 5,500 passengers, and at 180,000-gross tons is one of the largest cruise ships to homeport in the region.

Although AIDAcosma is the first cruise ship to arrive at Dubai Harbour, she is not the first ship of the season for Dubai, as Mein Schiff 6 of TUI Cruises arrived at Port Rashid last week.

Like MSC World Europa, AIDAcosma is homeporting in Dubai for her maiden cruise season, and will sail roundtrip 7-day cruises from the city to ports in the UAE and Oman.

Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal officials marked the occasion with a plaque exchange with the ships captain, a maritime tradition, to commemorate its maiden call.

AIDAcosma will contribute to the more than 300,000 cruise tourists that are expected to visit Dubai through Dubai Harbour during the current cruise season, making up a significant portion of the more than 800,000 expected in the city as a whole.

AIDAcosma features a range of exciting experiences and amenities including a Fun Park, children’s pool, water slide, an outdoor sports deck, and 17 restaurants and 23 lounges, serving a wide variety of cuisines from around the world.

“We are excited to return to Dubai Harbour – this time round with the maiden call of our youngest fleet member AIDAcosma,” said Alexander Ewig, Senior Vice President Marketing & Sales at AIDA Cruises.

“Through AIDAcosma, we are continuing on our path to green cruising and are elated to be collaborating with Dubai Harbour to do so,” he added. “We are sure our guests will have a great time, as they set sail on a tour of the region this winter 2022/2023, specifically at Dubai Harbour with its line-up of entertaining events and activities, alongside the magnificent Dubai skyline.”

The cruise terminals, which are part of the Dubai Harbour development, showcase the Dubai JBR skyline to guests and offer a wide array of amenities and services for passengers and crew – from ample seating areas to washrooms, currency exchange outlets, ATMs, Emirates Airline Check-in facility, cafes, retail outlets, Duty-Free, dedicated parking, taxi stands and more.

All facilities are wheelchair accessible and complimentary WIFI is enabled for passengers and crew to stay connected.

AIDAcosma arrives at Dubai Harbour

The wider Dubai Harbour is home to a wide range of upscale living, retail and hospitality experiences that combine to form a vibrant maritime lifestyle offering. The area is also within easy reach of the city’s key landmarks – including the Burj Al Arab, Ain Dubai, Bluewaters Island, and Palm Jumeirah.

As part of the Carnival Corporation group, AIDA Cruises has exclusively access to Dubai Harbour alongside Costa Cruises. The Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal was built in partnership by Shamal Holdings and Carnival Corporation to be the cruise company’s regional base of operations.

The Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal comprises two terminal buildings that offer passengers and crew a safe, comfortable, and seamless experience.

Designed to process over 3,250 passengers per hour, the highly efficient and modern terminals are located on a 910-metre pier, and can accommodate two mega cruise ships simultaneously.

All other cruise lines visiting Dubai and cruising from the city continue to use Port Rashid, which is home to the Dubai Cruise Terminal, one of the largest cruise infrastructure projects in the world.

Dubai Harbour opens the 2022-23 cruise season with the arrival of AIDAcosma

Today Dubai Harbour welcomed its first cruise ship the AIDAcosma from the German cruise line Aida, officially starting its 2022/23 cruise season. AIDAcosma will use Dubai as a homeport departing on 7-night Orinet voyages to Muscat, and Abu Dhabi. AIDAcosma is one of the largest cruise ships within the AIDA fleet and is a first-of-its-kind liquid natural gas (LNG) powered ship with a capacity of over 5,500 guests. 

To mark the opening of the cruise season, DHCT Management along with public and private sector stakeholders will exchange plaques with the Ship Captain, a maritime tradition, to commemorate its maiden call. 

Throughout the season, more than 300,000 cruise passengers are expected to arrive at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal, marking accelerating growth for the cruise industry in the country.

The infrastructure at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal comprises two terminal buildings that offer passengers and crew a safe, comfortable, and seamless experience. Designed to process over 3,250 passengers per hour, the highly efficient and modern terminals are located on a pier stretch of over 910 meters and can accommodate a complete passenger turnaround of two mega cruise ships simultaneously.

The purpose-built terminals ensure simplified and streamlined immigration, as well as customs screening processes, with the dedicated access routes for passengers and crew, facilitated by Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges, allowing uninterrupted flow between the ship and the terminal.

AIDA Cruises Reveals Itineraries for 2023-2024

AIDA Cruises has announced its winter 2023-2024 program with bookings available from February 23, 2023, according to a press release.

AIDA’s winter 2023-2024 winter program includes cruises to the Caribbean, Southeast Asia and the Seychelles, as well programs in Asia and the Canary Islands 

Additionally, the AIDAnova will offer cruises from Hamburg starting in November 2023.

The AIDAsol will also set off on its 117-day world cruise in October 2023.

From November 11, 2023, from Hamburg, the AIDAnova will be offering cruises to metropolises and to Norway and Denmark until May 4, 2024. Guests onboard the AIDAnova will have the opportunity to enjoy the festive season in cities like London, Amsterdam, Paris, Oslo and Copenhagen.

After a summer in the Mediterranean, the AIDAcosma will offer cruises around the Canaries and to Madeira for the first time from November 2023 to April 2024. The seven-day cruises will depart from Gran Canaria or Tenerife. 

The AIDAprima will offer seven-day cruises from Dubai or Abu Dhabi to Muscat in Oman and to Doha (Qatar) or to the Kingdom of Bahrain and Sir Bani Yas.  The seven-day voyages can also be booked combined as 14-day trips.

The AIDAblu will offer cruises in the Indian Ocean with stops in Mauritius, Seychelles, La Reunión and Madagascar while the AIDAbella will sail to destinations in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore. 

Additionally, three new 21-day selection cruises from Bangkok/ Laem Chabang are in the program including the Christmas and New Year’s Eve voyage and the 21-day Easter voyage to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore.

In the Caribbean, three AIDA Cruises ships will be offering cruises. The AIDAdiva, AIDAluna and AIDAperla will visit a wide range of islands including Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico. The AIDAdiva will be alternating on a route to Mexico and Belize as well as the Lesser Antilles. Embarkation is possible in four ports including the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Martinique and Barbados.

The AIDAsol will embark on a world tour in October 2023.  Starting in February 2024, the AIDAsol will embark on three voyages titled “Winter in the Far North”.

AIDA Cruises is offering a discount for early booking with a chance of saving up to 900 euros per person for winter departures 2023/24 when booking until April 30 or June 30, 2023.

The 2013-built AIDAstella cruise ship is the 7th and last Sphinx-class AIDA liner, with sisterships AIDAblu , AIDAsol and AIDAmar .

The vessel (IMO number 9601132) is currently Italy- flagged (MMSI 247322800) and registered in Genova .

History - construction and ownership

AIDA Cruises is a Rostock -headquartered subsidiary company owned by Carnival Corporation . AIDA is Europe's largest German cruise line (followed by TUI ) targeting younger and more active travelers. AIDA was founded in 1960 (as "Deutsche Seereederei") and in 2000 was acquired by P&O Princess Cruises, which merged with Carnival Corporation (shipowner) in 2003. AIDA's first World Cruise (AIDAcara) was in 2017-2018 (October-February) with 116-day roundtrip itinerary from Hamburg Germany .

The 2200-passenger ship AIDAstella was not operational until the 17th of March 2013. She was christened in Warnemunde port by 10 godmothers. AIDAstella sailed on her maiden cruise from Hamburg to Las Palmas, visiting Dover, Le Havre, Santander, La Coruna, Cadiz, Casablanca, Santa Cruz de Tenerife) to Las Palmas. The remarkable ceremony of the actual christening took place in the ship's Theatrium. The selection of 10 godmothers was a "thank you" for the people who helped in the shipbuilding process. Eight of them were female crew members, representing different countries and departments of the AIDA company. One godmother represented Jos L Meyer (the shipbuilder), and one - Partner Ship Design (the ship designers).

Besides the ship's staff and crew, AIDA cruise passengers are also served by Peper robots - the latest cyborg technology implemented fleetwide in 2016. These humanoid robots greet and guide passengers upon embarkation. They also assist them throughout the cruise by providing information and tips on onboard dining, entertainment, enrichment program (workshops, pre-scheduled events), casino and shopping promotions, shore excursions and tours. Pepper robots are mobile and communicate in 3 languages (English, German, Italian). They can also interpret human emotions by analyzing voice tones and facial expressions.

Decks and Cabins

Most AIDAstella staterooms (1097 total, in 24 grades) include 15 Suites, 505 Balconies, 391 Oceanview, 374 Inside cabins. Balcony cabins are sized 17-23 m2 (185-250 ft2) with 3-6 m2 (30-65 ft2) step-out balconies. The Oceanviews are sized 14-17 m2 (150-185 ft2), the Interior cabins are 14 m2 (150 ft2). Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 11. The largest accommodations are the Sundeck Deluxe Suites (56-87 m2 / 605-935 ft2) with private sundeck (12-50 m2 / 130-540 ft2).

The boat has 14 decks , of which 12 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

A lot of restaurants (their total number is seven) and bars (they are twelve) are available onboard AIDAstella. Try beer brand, draft beer, meatloaf, white sausages, American best beef & bison, Jerk Chicken, Clam Chowde, Surf & Turf (beef fillet with lobster tail). Good old wines are available to try.

AIDAstella 2018 refurbishment review

Ship's 5-day drydock refurbishment in 2018 (March 3-8, in  Dubai UAE ) resulted in the following changes:

• Eisbar by Langnese Happiness Station (ice cream bar) was added on Deck 11. At the new bar, passengers can create their own favorites from various ingredients. The available options include swirls, soft-serve and Carte d'Or (premium ice creams).
• A new gaming room was added to the Teen Club (deck 12).
• The Body & Soul SPA complex (deck 12) received new flooring.
• All public areas received new (energy-efficient) LED lighting and new carpeting (approx 3500 m2 / 37,700 ft2).
• The 5-day contract with the Drydocks World shipyard included general maintenance works and routine classification.

Itineraries

AIDAstella itinerary program is based on Canary Islands round-trip cruises from Gran Canaria , Holy Land voyages from Antalya and Mediterranean cruises with departures from Palma de Mallorca . During winter, AIDAstella operates on 7-day Dubai cruises, featuring Suez Canal repositioning between the Red Sea and Europe. At the end of 2015, the cruise ship was the first from the Carnival Corporation's fleet to visit the new Mina Zayed Cruise Terminal in Abu Dhabi .

AIDAstella is the 7th liner in the Sphinx-class/series of AIDA Kreutzfahrten, and fleet's 10th vessel. It was christened on March 16, 2013, in Warnemunde Germany . AIDA's Stella ship technology features ballast tanks designed to hold all micro-organisms when the tanks are emptied in call ports worldwide. This was the first ever ship equipped with such a system. For illuminating the interiors of the ship were used 1200 m of flexible LED modules and 9000 halogen Eco lamps provided by Osram.

On Nov 23, 2015, AIDAStella became the first Carnival Corporation vessel that docked at the newly constructed Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal (Mina Zayed) . This UAE port is an important homeport/turnaround port in Red Sea, with a total of 60 calls (2016 schedule) of which 40x by AIDA (23 calls by AidaStella). The visits were part of the ship's 2015-2016 schedule of 7-day roundtrips from Dubai to Muscat (Oman) and Mina Sulman (Bahrain) .

AIDAstella refurbishments review

The drydock 2023 refurbishment (March 6 thru March 21) was conducted in Marseille (France) . The project included mainly routine general maintenance and classification works, technical overhaul, minor repairs, hull cleaning and painting.
