Top things to do in los angeles, play on the santa monica pier.

For a fun-filled day in Los Angeles, head to Santa Monica, a scenic neighborhood that is home to a long pier stretching out into the Pacific Ocean. Stop by Santa Monica Pier’s carnival, where you can ride the Ferris wheel, try your hand at carnival-style games, and grab a bite to eat. From the pier’s vantage point, you’ll be privy to gorgeous views of the ocean and California’s coastline.

Explore Malibu

Escape the hustle and bustle of LA and drive up the coast to the laid-back city of Malibu. Enjoy lunch at the end of the historic Malibu Pier at a farmhouse-style restaurant, then head down to the sand and check out Malibu’s gorgeous and rugged beaches, known for their light golden sand and rocky formations that jut out into the ocean.

Take a Picture of the Hollywood Sign

A trip to Los Angeles isn’t complete until you see the city’s famous Hollywood sign. Set high up on a hill overlooking the city, the Hollywood Sign is visible from several vantage points. If you’re looking for a way to get closer, go on a shore excursion that includes a nearby photo op, where you’ll be able to pose in front of the iconic sign.

Where should I eat in Los Angeles?

Cruises from Los Angeles give you the opportunity to try some of LA’s fantastic restaurants before you set off on your vacation. Los Angeles is full of trendy restaurants that are run by some of the most renowned chefs in the world. Look for authentic Mexican cuisine and fresh seafood, including everything from fish tacos to locally caught and exquisitely prepared whole filets of fish at waterfront restaurants. Southern California’s sunny weather and low chance of rain also makes it a fantastic place for outdoor dining. There are beer gardens, patios perched on the beachside cliffs of Malibu, and rooftop bars downtown, where you can enjoy a bite to eat or a refreshing drink under the California sun.

What's the culture and history of Los Angeles?

Los Angeles was originally home to the Chumash and Tongva people. Eventually, the area was claimed by Spain by explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. It wasn’t until 1781 that the city was officially founded by the Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. In 1821, L.A. came under Mexican rule after the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican-American War, the city was purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. A boom in the city’s population occurred several decades later when oil was discovered in the region in the 1890s. Today, Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, home to over four million residents. While a large number of the population works in the entertainment industry, L.A. is also the financial and commercial center of Southern California.

Where can I go shopping in Los Angeles?

If you have dreams of sauntering down Rodeo Drive with your arms full of bags, head to the famous Beverly Hills area, which is full of luxury boutiques and designer brands. If you want to do some serious shopping without dropping a small fortune, head to Venice Beach and Santa Monica, where you’ll find an assortment of popular brand names mixed with affordable boutiques and beachwear shops.

How can I get around Los Angeles?

The best way to get around in Los Angeles is by car, as there aren’t many public transportation options that will take you all around the city. The bus system has several routes, but it’s important to account for traffic delays, no matter what form of transportation you choose. Therefore, booking a shore excursion is a smart way to guarantee that you’ll arrive at your ship on time.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The official currency of Los Angeles is the U.S. dollar, and you will find many ATMs all around the city. Tipping 15% to 20% of your total bill is customary for restaurants and taxi service, and most locals leave closer to 20%. It’s common to see a tip jar at eateries and cafes with counter service. Loose change or a small tip isn’t expected, but is often left by locals and appreciated by the staff of those establishments.

Los Angeles Cruise Guide

Due to its location along the Pacific Coast, many cruise itineraries to Mexico, the Panama Canal, South America, the Transpacific and Hawaii depart from the city of Los Angeles. This is the best port to find affordable getaways to the Mexican Riviera.

The port itself is actually located in Long Beach, which is a short drive away from the big-city L.A., but also has its fair share of attractions. You can stay overnight at the Queen Mary, a retired vintage luxury ocean liner that is rumored to be haunted and offers ghost tours. Take a dip in the calm waters at the beach, or take a whale watching tour along the Pacific Ocean. Once you’ve seen it all at the port, a short ride by car, Uber or the L.A. Metro brings you to the star-studded city of Los Angeles, where you can easily spend a week exploring all that it has to offer.

The city of Los Angeles is home to the biggest names in arts and culture, so it comes as no surprise that there’s a large variety of cultural attractions and museums. There are must-see art galleries like The Getty, which features classical exhibitions and artifacts, and the popular new museum, The Broad, which is free to enter, and features more modern exhibits. Music lovers can check out the GRAMMY Museum, or catch a concert at the beautifully designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. Los Angeles is the birthplace of American Cinema, so there’s also a variety of studio backlot tours that you can take, like Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, NBC and more. If you catch yourself walking along the historical streets of Hollywood, be sure to look down and spot some of your favorite celebrities names on their Stars at the Walk of Fame.

There are many ways to snap a picture of the infamous Hollywood sign, depending on the angle you’d like. If you have a car you can make a pit stop along Deronda Drive, and take a quick walk over to the sign. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, take the 6-mile hike along the Brush Canyon Trail, where you’ll eventually get that picture-perfect shot. You can also see the sign from outside of the Griffith Observatory, where for a small fee you can go up to the top of the observatory and take in the best panoramic views of the city of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles is also known for its diverse range of shops. For high-end designer trends, be sure to explore Rodeo Drive, where you might even run into a celebrity or two. For hip vintage and thrift shops, walk along Melrose, and for the ultimate cheap finds, check out the Los Angeles Fashion District. There’s also no shortage of food, with delicious restaurants and popular chains on every block. Los Angeles is home to In-N-Out Burger, a popular West Coast fast food chain, as well as many other restaurants owned by celebrity chefs and popular Instagram-worthy cafés.

The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.

Guests also have their choice of cuisine, from alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace to Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. With 550 crew members on board, the ship maintains a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio.

Viking Sky sails to the Mediterranean, Europe, Central America and more. The ship also offers world voyages.

Debuted in May 2023, Oceania Cruises' first new ship in more than a decade can hold up to 1,200 passengers and 800 crew members. Vista is the inaugural ship in Oceania's Allura Class, featuring top-of-the-line amenities like a culinary center, an artist loft and an extensive library, along with facilities like a pool, a casino, a spa and a fitness center. Additionally, Vista offers enrichment opportunities like destination-focused seminars led by guest speakers and dynamic musical performances.

One of the highlights of Oceania Vista is its wide array of dining venues, from specialty restaurants like Ember (American fare) and Toscana (Italian cuisine) to the poolside Waves Grill and daily afternoon tea service. In the evening, guests can grab a drink at their choice of several bars and lounges; Vista's immersive mixology program utilizes innovative techniques and trends to create an elevated cocktail experience.

Vista's well-appointed staterooms – which range from 240 to 2,400 square feet – boast balconies, queen-size beds, rainforest showers, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, among other amenities. If you splurge for a suite, you'll enjoy added benefits like iPads, cashmere blankets, complimentary laundry and shoeshine services, access to the Executive Lounge and butler service.

Oceania Vista explores an array of popular destinations in the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, the Mediterranean and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The design of the Vista creates more expansive and contemporary public areas than other ships in Oceania's fleet, so even when the ship is at full capacity, it never feels crowded. Also, since it is an all-veranda ship, all guests have the same great ocean view. – Julie L. Kessler, Contributor

Seabourn Quest differs from the line's newer ships in terms of accommodations, as it offers some Ocean View Suites with porthole windows instead of verandas. However, all cabins still come equipped with amenities like flat-screen TVs, designer toiletries, personalized stationery, Egyptian cotton linens and in-suite bars stocked with your preferred refreshments.

The 670 passengers will receive Oceania's signature service, with 400 crew members catering to guests' needs. Recent cruisers noted they rarely encountered crowds in the ship's public areas. The atmosphere aboard Regatta is decidedly adult, as the ship caters to older, affluent cruisers.

Entertainment varies from nightly musical performances to table games at the casino. Dining is also diverse: Regatta offers five venues ranging from the formal dining room to a casual grill. All-new plant-based menu items are also available.

When we talk about cruising from Los Angeles, fyi: we’re talking about cruises from Long Beach. Stock market today: Wall Street slumps as rising yields crank up the pressure

U.S. stocks slumped Monday after higher yields in the bond market caused by a strong U.S. economy cranked up the pressure on Wall Street.

The S&P 500 tumbled 1.2%, following up on its 1.6% loss from last week , which was its worst since October. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 248 points, or 0.7%, and the Nasdaq composite slumped 1.8%.

Stocks had been solidly higher earlier in the day, as oil prices eased with hopes that international efforts to calm escalating tensions in the Middle East may help. But Treasury yields also spurted upward following the latest report on the U.S. economy to blow past expectations.

The economy and financial markets are in an awkward phase where such strength raises hopes for growing profits at companies but also hurts prospects for easier interest rates from the Federal Reserve. They’re the two main levers that set stock prices, and they’re simultaneously yanking Wall Street in different directions.

Traders want lower interest rates, which can give the overall economy a boost, and much of the U.S. stock market’s run to records recently was built on expectations for cuts.

But strong reports like Monday’s, which showed U.S. shoppers increased their spending at retailers last month by more than expected, have traders broadly forecasting just one or two cuts to rates this year, according to data from CME Group. That’s down from expectations for six or more cuts at the start of this year. Some traders are bracing for potentially no cuts because inflation and the overall economy have remained stubbornly above forecasts this year.

High interest rates and bond yields hurt prices for all kinds of investments, particularly those that look expensive or those that compete for the same kinds of investors that bonds do.

As a result, real estate investment trusts fell to some of Monday’s sharpest losses in the stock market. When bonds are paying higher yields, they peel away investors who might otherwise be interested in the relatively big dividends that real estate stocks pay. High rates can also pressure real estate prices broadly.

Office owner Boston Properties fell 3.2%, for example.

More influential was weakness for Big Tech stocks. Apple dropped 2.2%, Nvidia fell 2.5% and Microsoft sank 2%. They’ve been past beneficiaries of low interest rates and often feel pressure when yields are rising. Because they’re also the largest stocks on Wall Street, their movements carry extra weight on the S&P 500 and other indexes.

Microsoft, for example, swung from an early gain of 1.2% to its loss in the afternoon and was the second-largest force weighing on the S&P 500.

Helping to keep the losses in check were some financial companies that reported encouraging earnings for the start of the year. The pressure is on companies broadly to deliver fatter profits because interest rates look so much less likely to offer support in the near term.

Goldman Sachs rose 2.9% following its report.

M&T Bank climbed 4.7% after reporting profit for the first quarter that was slightly above analysts’ expectations. It also said it slightly shrank the amount of pain that it would take if the pressured commercial real-estate industry sinks sharply.

Charles Schwab rose 1.7% after also edging past analysts’ forecasts for its profit last quarter.

All told, the S&P 500 fell 61.59 points to 5,061.82. The Dow dropped 248.13 to 37,735.11, and the Nasdaq composite sank 290.08 to 15,885.02.

In the oil market, a barrel of U.S. crude for May delivery fell 25 cents to $85.41 as political leaders urged Israel not to retaliate after Iran’s attack on Saturday involving hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Brent crude, the international standard, eased 35 cents to $90.10 per barrel.

Financial markets had been nervous heading into the weekend. The worry was that an attack by Iran could widen Israel’s war with Hamas and ultimately constrict the flow of crude oil. But Israel said 99% of the drones and missiles were intercepted as diplomats urged a de-escalation and the U.S. administration made clear it did not support a wider war with Iran.

This year’s jump in oil prices has been raising worries about a knock-on effect on inflation, which has remained stubbornly high . After cooling solidly last year, inflation has consistently come in above forecasts in each month so far of 2024.

“If inflation is sticky because of momentum in the economy, that’s not necessarily bad for stocks,” Bank of America strategists led by Ohsung Kwon wrote in a BofA Global Research report. “But stagflation is,” referring to the painful combination of a stagnating economy and high inflation.

Strategists at Wells Fargo Investment Institute raised their forecast for where the S&P 500 could end this year in part because of the surprising strength of the U.S. economy. While they expect stock prices to be choppy following big gains since October, they say a growing U.S. economy should drive sales for companies.

In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.61% from 4.52% late Friday.

A comprehensive list of 2023 & 2024 tech layoffs

From major layoffs at tesla, amazon and microsoft to small fintech startups and apps.

cruises from los angeles 2023 october

The tech-wide reckoning that began in 2022  and ran throughout into 2023 has continued into this year. And while 2024’s losses are not at that scale, they’re still significant, driven by big names like Pixar , Google , Microsoft , Mozilla and TikTok . It remains to be seen if this year’s layoff trends follow last year’s, in which layoffs slowed down in the summer, before cuts began ramping up yet again toward the winter .

Momentum for a tech sector rebound remains slow to build, outside of bright spots within artificial intelligence and adjacent companies, resulting in tech companies continuing to cut back on their workforces and pivot from a growth mindset to one based on efficiency in the face of stubborn market conditions.

But tracking these layoffs helps us to understand the impact on innovation, which companies are facing tough pressures and who is available to hire for the businesses lucky to be growing right now. Unfortunately, it also serves as a reminder of the deeply human impact of layoffs and how risk profiles could evolve from here .

Below you’ll find a comprehensive list of all the known layoffs in tech that started last year, to be updated monthly. If you have a tip on a layoff, contact us here . If you prefer to remain anonymous, you can contact us here .

The final total of layoffs for 2023 ended up being 262,735, according to Layoffs.fyi . Tech layoffs conducted in 2023 were 59% higher than 2022’s total, according to the data in the tracker. And 2024 is off to a rough start despite not reaching the peak of last year’s first quarter cutbacks.
