Air Travel should be Restricted Essay

Model Answer 1

Air travel has become highly popular and it can be easily understood if we only look at the upcoming and departed number of flights in busy aviation. Since air travel saves a great deal of time, most business persons today chose air travel prior to any other route. Traveling through the air has many advantages as well as many disadvantages. In my opinion, important air travel should not be restricted but when air travel becomes a means of luxury then it must be restricted. ieltsxpress

At first, no other route can take a business person so fast that an air transport can and people, especially opulent business executives use this route to reach the destination fast. Then, traveling to a far destination or a distant country, an air transportation system is a must. For instance, traveling from India to the USA is quite impossible through road, ship, or in any other vehicle and people in these cases have no alternative than to use an airway.

But nowadays it has become a fashion for people to use airways even for a very short distance. Air transportation systems are using a large portion of the world’s reserve fuel and affecting the environment by polluting it. So restriction should be applied in these cases. For example: if a destination takes only 2-4 hours on road then the idea of traveling through air is pointless and highly extravagant. A government should apply strict rules so that an aviation company can distinguish a true business executive and a tourist and give the business person the option to travel through the air and encourage the tourist to take an alternative route.

Air Travel should be Restricted because it Causes Pollution Essay

Model Answer 2

The impact of air travel on the environment has been the topic of continuous debate in recent years, following the concern that more and more people refer to it as a convenient means of travel. I feel that restrictions should be imposed on air travel.

The first undeniable factor is that aircraft accounts for a large proportion of air pollution. Planes, either idling or taxiing, contribute a large part of local emissions annually. There are some suggestions that air travel is one of the most suitable modes of transport for long-distance trips. This idea is, however, fallacious. Trains, for instance, can also serve as an optimal alternative, consuming less energy and causing less contamination. So it is highly recommended, that the government imposes restrictions for inter-country travel.

Air Travel should be Restricted IELTS Agree/Disagree Essay

Along with air pollution, aircraft can cause noise pollution. Although it is impossible to precisely measure the actual impact of noise on people’s everyday lives, its ability to increase anxiety and disturbance levels has been confirmed. Especially to those living in the neighborhood of an airport and around the flight paths, noise problems created by aircraft are a headache.

However, the air is indeed the only fastest means of transport to fly across countries. So it should be operated in such a way that its strengths can be taken maximum advantage of. For instance, by replacing old engines with cleaner ones, people can mitigate the negative effect caused by flying.

In light of those facts discussed above, substantial consideration should be given to pollution caused by aircraft. Air travel should be preferred only when there are no other means of transport available.

IELTS Agree Disagree Sample Essay

Model Essay 3

It is irrefutable that air travel causes pollution and uses a lot of fuel, but I disagree that air travel should be restricted. Restricting air travel would solve some problems but would lead to many other problems.

At a time when people all over the world worry about the decreasing level of fossil fuels and global warming, it is right to take action to save the planet earth. However, to simply discourage flights is not the answer. International tourism has become the backbone of many economies of the world. Many countries are earning from tourism. Many people are employed in this industry. Many businesses like hotels and leisure centers are dependent on tourists. So, if we discourage international tourism, it would create new and even worse problems. Many businesses would go broke and many people would be without jobs.

Air flight also enables intercultural exchanges between countries. The advent of cheap airfare makes it possible for people the world over to travel regularly, regardless of the purpose of the trip. Therefore, people have the opportunities to learn from different cultures and have a better understanding of countries they used to be unfamiliar with. This, in turn, enhances cultural communications between countries.

It is true that air travel consumes oil, but other modes of transportation are also causing pollution and using fuel. Discouraging private cars and encouraging people to use public transport could help save environmental resources in a big way. Therefore it would be a very unpractical decision to restrict air travel at the cost of people’s mobility, or worse, at the cost of the development of the economy. The technology could also be used to produce more environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient engines.

To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that, instead of restricting air travel, we should develop a more efficient engine that produces more energy output with less fuel and fewer major air pollutants. We should also focus on limiting private vehicles and encouraging public transport.

IELTS Essay Topic Pollution

Model Answer 4

With the growth in aviation, the majority of people are more likely to travel abroad to spend their leisure time on special occasions. One of the most tangible influences of this phenomenon is the exponential increase of thousand airlines which provide low-cost carrier, and it is argued as the trigger of environmental catastrophes on a global scale such as air pollution and lack of fossil fuel. As a result, critics claim that air travel should be controlled to preserve the natural ecology. While it is believed that air travel provides more benefits in terms of time-consuming and reasonable prices, people also have to consider the negative side of this transportation.

Supporters of the aircraft deliberate that airplanes are by far the fastest mode of transport which connects all of the parts of the world by hours. Before the invention of aviation, people used ships to travel for trading and traveling in other countries, but it took more than a month to reach a destination. In the 20th century, when airplanes have been invented, many counties choose this means of transport to export food such as vegetables and fruits to places where they are not in season or cannot be grown. For pragmatic instance, New Zealand exports fresh milk and apples to developing countries, Africa and India, using airplanes only around 12 hours. Consequently, some food could be exported faster and would not deteriorate in the worldwide distribution.

In addition, the availability of cheap air travel allows many holidaymakers to visit abroad for vacations over the last decades. According to a survey published in Times magazine the proportion of travelers who prefer traveling to other countries increases to around 70% in 2014, and it goes hand in hand with an increase of annual income of low-cost airlines which is more than 35% compared to the previous year. Air travel leads people to get the novelty of other challenging vacations. ieltsxpress

ieltsxpress preply IELS tutors starting from usd 5 per hour

On the other hand, the detrimental effects of this development are the impact on the environment. Firstly, a study records that there are more than a hundred international and domestic flights that require more than a thousand liters of fuel every day. As time passed by, the natural environment is absorbed to produce more fuel while there is prevention to limit this activity. In the linear relationship of this condition, burning of fossil fuel in terms of oil will add significantly to this problem as just one flight releases large amounts of carbon dioxide and other gases into the environment and damages the layers of ozone. It can be concluded that the development of aviation contributes the biggest contribution to climate change as a global problem.

In conclusion, the development of air travel in recent years has its own merits and demerits for the environment. At a glance, air travel benefits people to commute between different regions sooner whereas people are blamed for environmental influences which are more important issues so that the restriction should be implemented to reduce damages. From my perspective, using air travel for traveling should be controlled, and green taxes should be increased to control low-cost airline companies as a novel solution.

Air Travel should be Restricted IELTS Essay

Model Answer 5

A few individuals opine that to curb increased air pollution and excessive fuel usage air travel should be limited. I completely disagree with this statement because firstly, it is a more comfortable and fast means of transport and secondly, strict guidelines are followed.

There is no denying this conviction that air travel is the most comfortable and fast means of transport. Air travels offer a wide range of facilities, which are comfortable for people when they need to travel large distances. Moreover, this helps people to reach their destinations at a fast pace, due to which a lot of time is saved. Limited connectivity of airplanes will increase problems for passengers and will add a burden on them. Air travel has helped the world to connect in the best possible way. A recent survey in France depicted that the people prefer air travel as major means of transport in comparison to other means of transport because of comfort and less travel time.

Moreover, in this modern era, due to the advancements in technology, a lot of preventive measures and strict guidelines are followed to minimize the damage done to the environment. Proper training is conducted for pilots to enable them to not only reduce fuel consumption but also maintain the safety of the aircraft. Furthermore, new technologies that are used in aircraft are invented keeping the environment in mind. As a result, a lot of these technologies have contributed to reducing pollution levels. For example, a recent invention of a new type of emitter has drastically reduced pollution done by aircraft.

To summarize, air travel should not be restricted as it is a convenient mode of transport, and the aircraft industry is continuously taking preventive measures to reduce environmental damage.

IELTS Essay on Pollution

With the accelerating pace of lifestyle, traveling by air has become a favorable option for people to move from one place to another. However, some people blame the exhaustion of some natural resources and air pollution on this kind of transportation. This essay aims to outline evidence that supports the opposing position.

Apparently, there is little doubt about the constructive benefits that humankind derives from air travel. Firstly, traveling by plane would be more affordable and time-saving when it comes to long-haul distance trips. It means that in some cases, traveling by other transportation may cost people a higher expenditure of time as well as money. From another perspective, the possibility remains that other means would consume a greater amount of natural resources and release more pollutants into the environment. Therefore, it probably merits one’s attention that whenever humanity still relies on natural resources, the emergence of environmental degradation is inevitable regardless of any transportation that is in vogue.

Moreover, the advent of modern technology has promised a distant future that could make air travel more environmentally friendly. For instance, alternative resources may release air travel from the reliance on natural reserves, which is a contributing factor to the imminent demise of some resources. Besides, technological advances in the aircraft industry have brought profound impacts that lead to the saving in fuel. It is, therefore, reasonable to look forward to more contemporary inventions that would allow people to make optimal use of air travel as well as prevent destructive outcomes of this means.

By way of conclusion, I would reaffirm the position that air travel contributes an integral role in modern lifestyles. Therefore, there are compelling reasons to direct spending on improving air travel to be more eco-friendly rather than impose constraints on this transportation. ieltsxpress

IELTS Writing Task 2 Model Answer: Cheap air travel advantages and disadvantages

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

Some people say cheap air travel is good because it enables ordinary people to travel, others argue that it is bad for the environment . Discuss both views, and include your opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer :

One of the highly controversial issues today relates to whether air travel and increased number of airports are negatively impacting the environment or that they have enabled more people to travel to various destinations around the world without having to be out of pocket. I strongly agree with the latter view due to several reasons that I will discuss in greater detail in my essay.

On one side of the argument there are people who argue that the drawbacks of increased air traffic considerably outweigh its advantages and that governments should mitigate the negative influence of cheap air flights by inflicting more taxes on the carriers of these flights. The main reason for believing this is that the increasing number of airports and the stupendous number of flights have remarkably affected the environment . This is seen in the unprecedented levels of air pollution and noise pollution recorded in the past two decades. One good illustration of this is the excessive air pollution levels that are recorded in big industrial cities such as Beijing in China and Jubail in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, it is easy to see why this argument has gained support.

air travel essay ielts

On the other hand, it is also possible to make the opposing case. It is often argued that, nowadays, low-cost flights have enabled people to travel to far away destinations that they otherwise could have never visited. A second point is that affordable air travel can unquestionably contribute to booming of international trade and tourism , hence creating more job opportunities for many people around the globe. A particularly good example here is a study conducted by the European tourism bureau which concluded that the number of European tourists visiting France trebled in the period after low fare flights were introduced in Europe. Thus, it goes without saying that this viewpoint is credible and realistic too.

After having discussed the most pertinent points of this issue, I feel that the only logical conclusion is that the advantages reaped by low fare flights such as the flourishing of tourism and international trade outweigh their disadvantages. Hence, I am inclined to the opinion that supports low fare air travel.

Hi There is no mentioning of increased taxation in your introduction. The actual question, in my opinion is whether or not heavy taxation would make any difference. In your introduction you argue between cheap flights and pollution, this idea is not reflected in your introduction. What do you think of this intro: It is sometimes claimed that due to cheap flight prices increasingly more airports are being built and the number of aircrafts in the sky is growing respectively. Since this has resulted in increased levels of pollution and noise, governments ought to consider rising tariffs on air travel. While I agree that the rise in air traffic is affecting the environment both directly and indirectly, I believe that imposing heavy taxation might only bring a short-term solution.

' data-srcset=

You are right about intro. It does not paraphrase the topic clearly. Your suggested intro is good and with your permission, I would like to use it in this essay.

Cheers, Atul.

Hi Atul, Thank you for your reply and appreciation. By all means feel free to use the intro. However, I wrote this piece before I saw your answer so my essay paragraphs are tailored according the intro. First is about the environmental effect (similar to yours), but the second is about taxes bringing only a potentially immediate reduction in air travel and in order to find a long-term solution governments should find other ways such as clean energy sources and quieter engines.

I had a closer look at the essay and realized that the topic mentioned in this post was incorrect. The essay was about “cheap air travel” rather than “effects of higher taxes on air traffic”. Have a look at this essay for the latter topic: https://ieltsonlinepractice.com/ielts-writing-task-2-model-answer-air-traffic/

IELTS Model Essay: Travel

This  IELTS model essay is on the topic of travel . It’s a 2-part, or IELTS direct question essay  from the General Training Test. It is taken from Cambridge IELTS 8 .

Today more people are travelling than ever before. Why is this the case? What are the benefits of travelling for the traveller?

(Cambridge IELTS 8 General Training Test A)

air travel essay ielts

Over the last couple of decades, a growing number of people have started to travel, something that is unprecedented in human history. This essay will look at the reasons for this, along with its benefits for travellers themselves.

One of the major reasons for this is the lower cost of air travel. The emergence of no-frills airlines such as WizzAir and AirAsia have made it much cheaper for people to take short-haul flights, enabling many people to travel who previously wouldn’t have been able to afford it. Even the cost of long-haul flights has come down due to increased competition amongst airlines.

Not only have flights become cheaper, but the market for these flights has become wider. A few decades ago, travellers were mostly from Europe and North America, but demand for travel has since increased in new markets such as East Asia and the Middle East and it’s not uncommon to find large numbers of Chinese tourists in European travel destinations.

This trend undoubtedly has many benefits for the travellers themselves. First of all, people get exposed to new experiences, such as different kinds of food and different attitudes to life. For example, people who travel to Thailand come across a much slower and gentler way of life than they would find at home.

Travel also helps people forget the stresses and strains of everyday life. Lying on a beach reading a book while listening to the sounds of ocean waves lapping up against the sand is a great way to relax and refresh oneself.

To conclude, cheaper and wider access to air travel has helped to fuel the increase in travel, something which brings benefits such as exposure to a different way of life and the chance to relax.

Band 9 sample essay about travelling

Home  »  IELTS BAND 9 ESSAYS  »  Band 9 sample essay about travelling

Some people like to travel outside their country. Others would rather travel to tourist spots in their own country first, before travelling abroad. Which do you prefer to do and why? Include specific details and examples to support your choice.

Over the past few decades the international tourism industry has gone through a boom period. Cheap air travel, in particular, has allowed ordinary working class people to travel to more international destinations than ever before. In this essay, I shall refer to number of sociological studies to show why – contrary to popular opinion – domestic travel should initially take precedence over international travel.

To begin with, people’s knowledge of their own countries and culture has grown increasingly sketchy. This is largely because foreign brands, television shows and cultural objects flood local markets.

For example, The Asian Cultural Society found that Japanese teenagers knew more about American television series than 19th Century Japanese woodcuts. It should therefore be clear that citizens need to know much more about their own countries, and that visits to local cultural centres should occur before visits to remote countries.

Secondly, people reap high economic benefits if they are well-travelled in their country of birth. This is because local travel, in particular, opens up business opportunities.

For example, the Korean Society for Entrepreneurship found that 40% of successful start-up companies were run by individuals who had travelled extensively in Korea and sniffed out small openings in developmentally neglected areas. Seen in this light, local travel can also be of vital economic significance

To conclude, although few would argue outright against foreign travel, there are certainly reasons why domestic travel is initially preferable. In the future, as some of the hype surrounding foreign travel dies down, these reasons will no doubt appear more attractive and conspicuous.

Many people think cheap air travel should be encouraged IELTS Essay

air travel essay ielts

IELTS Essay Topic

Many people think cheap air travel should be encouraged because it gives ordinary people the freedom to travel further. However, others think this leads to environmental problems, so air travel should be more expensive in order to discourage people from having it. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

Sample answer   1.

Numerous individuals believe that common people can get the freedom to travel more distant if we encourage low-fare air travel. However, other parts of society think this may cause many environmental issues and travel by air transport should become expensive so that people do not use it. I agree with the latter view; however, this essay will discuss both.

To begin with, making air flights cheap will encourage ordinary people to roam beyond their boundaries. As a result, many people can fulfil their dream of travelling worldwide. However, having more air transport could result in severe environmental problems like air pollution and more fuel consumption, making it scarce. For example, a recent report by the Times of India mentioned that fuel consumption in air industries had increased from 30 to 40% as more people started travelling by air flights, even for smaller distances.

The government should make air travel costly so that people do not travel by flight for shorter distances and prefer to go via other means. It will result in less air pollution, less fuel consumption and a free sky for that birds to fly. Moreover, we can remain safe from environmental problems like resource scarcity. For instance, in New Zealand, there is a rule regarding the distance that people should travel at least 1000 km for aeroplane travel. Otherwise, they should travel by train.

To conclude, it is better to prevent environmental problems than fulfilling dreams of travelling by aeroplane to live a peaceful life in the future using natural resources.

Model IELTS Essay June 2020

Below is a model IELTS essay for Writing Task 2 this year. It is estimated at band 9.

IELTS Essay Question June 2020

This essay question appeared in IELTS Writing Task 2 a couple of weeks ago. It is a challenging topic if you have not prepared for it. Although topics in Writing Task 2 are not repeated as often as in the Speaking Test, it is advisable to prepare for this topic by learning some of the ideas given below.

The advances in air travel are focused only in first class and this seems to have left others with no benefits at all. Do you agree or disagree?

IELTS Essay Answer June 2020

The essay below will help you understand flexibility linking and see how to explain main ideas. Notice how the thesis statement reflects the body paragraphs,.You can also learn some great vocabulary for the topic of air travel which you can use in your Speaking Test.

Model Answer:

Some people think that the only positive developments in air travel have been in first class leaving others with no advantages. In my opinion, while first class passengers certainly enjoy a premium service, most advances benefit all passengers.

It is true that developments in air travel can easily be seen in first class in terms of premium, private facilities and services. People travelling first class are now able to enjoy pull out beds and a private area where they can work with power outlets and wifi connections. Some airlines even offer first class passengers a suite including a personal in flight chef and private shower. Other companies offer lounges where premium passengers can mingle and network during the flight.

However, it cannot be said that the budget traveller has not benefited from the developments in commercial air travel. Although the seating area may still be cramped causing passengers discomfort, particularly on long haul flights, the developments have allowed them to also enjoy technological luxuries such as individual inflight entertainment options. Furthermore, the food offered to budget commercial travellers has vastly improved, although admittedly this is only available on long haul flights.

Finally, regardless of class, all people travelling by plane can now enjoy better security and safety on board the plane due to advanced technology in flying. For example, the number of fatal air crashes over the last couple of decades has fallen dramatically. Another benefit that can be appreciated by all is the speed at which modern jet planes are now able to reach their destinations making distant travel more frequent and faster.

In conclusion, even though first class enjoy some extra perks, the technological advances in air travel can be shared by everyone regardless of the price of their ticket.

Note: I have put the word count for your benefit so you can see how long an essay ought to be. You do not need to write the word count in the real test.

Hey Liz, do you think this idiom would be appropriate to use in task 2? Every dark cloud has a silver lining

And here’ s the sentence: As, every dark cloud has a silver lining, there are some possible solutions to this grave problem

' src=

It won’t help your score. Use your own words if you want to express an idea. Memorising idioms won’t help and memorising sentences is even worse. Also, that is an idiom which is not often used by native speakers but very overused by students. Try to express your ideas, your own way.

Flight traveling is becoming increasingly popular across the globe. A fair amount of people tend to believe that the air travel sector providing significant facilities only for a higher class coach, and they never consider the rest of the classes. This essay will argue why they should take care of all classes despite some minor risks.

To embark on, it is obvious that rich people always prefer top-class travel wherever they go. Owing to spending a huge amount of money, they expect more comfort and requirements. so, they supposed to offer more things which compensate for their money. Otherwise, they will never choose this case. These are a few instances that bolstered them to offer a number of things to attract customers.

Despite this department satisfy a higher class people, it is important to bear in mind that the number of basic passengers is incredibly higher than high-class seats. Therefore, they should provide essential things such as quality foods and drinking water, which fulfill their ticket cost and their mind. Otherwise, they will reduce their ticket booking and prefer other agencies who treating their travelers reasonably. Due to this change, it will affect profit as well as their reputation. To illustrate this point, there is a persuasive example, in 2005, The Fly emirates company faced a huge loss because of the commercial passenger booked a minimum number of tickets.

This essay argued that people who are favored for top class tickets have a flawed understanding of the importance of the average cost tickets. In my opinion, providing good facilities for minimum cost tickets is an absolute imperative and that is entirely justified despite a small and considerable effect.

Undoubtedly, you have written an incredible essay on this topic. I want to ask you something about the same question. I have heard from many sources that whenever there is a question: Do you agree or Disagree; it is better to choose a single side. Moreover, the thesis statement should include something like this: I completely agree or I disagree. Can you please explain, if we can still be partial as you did with agreeing or disagree question. Thank you so much for you help.

You can take a partial agreement or one-sided approach for any opinion essay for IELTS writing task 2. You don’t get a higher score if you use a one-sided approach. No, you don’t have to use the words “agree” or “disagree” in your thesis statement.

' src=

Hi Liz, I wrote the test recently and got this topic: More houses are needed in many countries to cope with increasing populations. Would it be better to build houses in existing towns and cities, or to develop new towns in rural areas? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

I felt really confused about the type of the essay, as there is no clear sentences such as:”discuss both sides”. I personally think this is an opinion essay so I only provide points to support my own opinion. Could you let me know which type of essay it is?

This is what many teachers, including myself, call a “Direct Question Essay”. Your ask is to answer the question in the context of the statement provided. If you want a one sided approach, you would say “I think houses should be built in existing towns rather than in the countryside” – your whole essay would explain this view.

' src=

Hello mam.., its been a pleasure following your page… i have a doubt regarding a phrase ‘One the one hand’ Is it correct mam?? Or it is ‘On one hand’.. thankyou

Both are fine.

' src=

hi Liz, actually your blog is very helpfull my question is : I found your thoughts great for this article so I decided to memorize it. Is this something wrong? Will they discover that it is not mine because it includes the same ideas as me?

It is not often that the essay question is worded exactly the same. The topic may be the same but the question and instructions will differ. So, memorising a whole essay is a waste of time. Also, the examiner who marks your task 2 also marks your task 1. If the English you use in your task 2 is prefect because you memorised the essay, but your English in task 1 is completely different and of a lower level, it will be obvious that you have attempted to cheat. Remember, memorising answers is a form of cheating. This test is designed to test your level of English, not your memory to copy someone’s writing.

Hi Liz! Great respect for your work! A quick question though. Does “advances are made ONLY in first class” suggest the rest of the plane has no development at all? If so, wouldn’t discussing improvements made for commercial travellers contradict the prompt?I thought if we disagreed with the prompt we’d have to talk exclusively about how advances made for first class somehow benefit all.

But this essay doesn’t disagree with the prompt. It agrees only partially. While there are advances to first class travel, there are also advances to budget travel and travel for all passengers.

' src=

I beleive if the question ask if you agree or not, you should answer fully agree or dis agree. But if the question is to what extent to do you agree or disagree thats the time you could partially agree or disagree. Is that right?

No, that is not correct. Regardless of the wording, if the instructions ask for your opinion (agree disagree etc), you can present any opinion – one sided or partial agreement.

' src=

Thank you Liz

' src=

Hello Liz. I am following your advanced lessons by heart. I can’t thank you enough for everything you are doing for IELTS band 7 and above aspirants.

Just a question, in the given question , it does not say “discuss both sides and give your opinion”. It says “…… What’s your opinion?”

So can I plan my essay as one sided approach to “disagree” and only elaborate my points in 3 BPs and then conclusion?

will that suffice for band 8 task response? please reply. My exam is in next week. Thank you again.

It is completely your choice if you take a one sided or balanced approach. It doesn’t affect your score which one you choose. However, your score will be affected by ensuring you tackle the issue or issues presented, how you use your ideas, how you support them, how you link them etc.

Thanks a bunch!

Please anyone give me a feedback on this essay as I am preparing for the GT exam and I had never attempted IELTS.

Some people prefer to do physical activities to relax, while others choose mental activities. Discuss both views and give your opinion? Ans — Everyone needs leisure time to relax from work and hectic life. Some prefer mind relaxing activities in their spare time, for instance, reading and doing word puzzles. Others think it is vital to do physical exercise for relaxing the body. In this essay, I would shed light on both the notions and give my point of view. Undoubtedly, people who are doing hard physical work as a part of their daily life need physical rest. Their spare time will be effective if they spend them doing intellectual activities like reading, solving crosswords, or listening to music. Our brain when concentrating on reading books and doing other stuff involving mental work, we forget other stressful things. It helps to regenerate brain cells and feel refreshing. For instance, a farmer can use his free time in reading newspapers or listening to news related to agriculture reforms will not only enhance his knowledge on a day to day affairs but also provide physical rest. On the other hand, people engaged in work which leaves mental strain must take mental rest in their free time. If they are lacking physical exercises and doing sedentary work they can choose outdoor activities, like participating in games. This provides necessary exercises and keeps them healthy. For example, a computer programmer after a mental strain needs physical activity and it is better to go for an outdoor game. To conclude, leisure time gives a break from our daily work and helps to keep a balance between work and life. Relaxing activities should be based on one’s day to day work. Physical activities are opted by people having mental strain at work to keep themselves active physically as well while brainstorming activities are for people whose work involves more physically.

Hi Liz, Another great post-thanks. Do you think that, in general, higher scoring essays have 5 paragraphs? Thanks and hope you’re doing well

No. The number of paragraphs (either four or five) does not decide your score. You can have either four or five. The choice is based on the number of main points or central themes you have.

' src=

Thank you a lot. I took many useful advise from you

' src=

Hello Liz, I am grateful to you for providing such a treasure of resources at no cost to prepare for IELTS. Recently I went though GT section and received L8.5,R8,W6.5,S6.5. I was a bit disappointed as I was aiming for 7 in both W & S. nevertheless, before reading your model answer, I prepared mine one. Please give your feedback whether is it worthy for band 7.

Facilities provided in the flights are differentiated based on the class of occupancy. Though the development of better facilities are mainly concentrated to the first class travellers and other passengers are deprived of the advantages, I believe that for the profitability of airlines it is absolutely necessary to focus on first class passengers. Most of the airlines are focusing on providing best treatment to their first class passengers. The foremost reason behind providing best in class facilities to their first class passengers is to earn higher revenue as the charges of first class can be as high as four times the price of economy class. Another obvious reason is to entice the well known passengers such as celebrities, businessman who can enhance the brand value of the air travel agencies. For these reasons, advancements in air travelling are limited to first class passengers only. Despite the fact that while all the facilities are provided to the higher class travellers and passengers of economy class feel that they are left behind in the facilities, the purpose of travelling in economy class should not be forgotten. Though most of the air-travellers are belong to economy class, the intention of these passengers is to complete their journey in lowest budget with compromising the comforts. In other words, such passengers are not entitled for the better facilities due to lesser money they spent for their tickets. In conclusion, better treatments are offered to the first class passengers due to the enormous amount they pay for the entire journey while passengers of lower class could not be offered the same treatment as they bear fraction of the cost of entire flight. In my opinion, equal benefits to all passengers can not be possible due to their different spending on overall travel cost.

Thanks so much Liz. This is really helpful

I thought that the word “perk” is informal. How it can be used in essays?

It is completely fine to use.

Hi Dear Liz, a few weeks ago while i was navigating through your wonderful web site, i came across a few ideas for different Essay’s subjects, but unfortunately i am not able to find them any more!!!. would you please let me know where i should look for that on your web site? I have been searching over and over and still no luck yet. Many thanks for your help and appreciate all your kindness.

Did you try the main Writing Task 2 section which contains most links to pages relating to essays. Go to the HOME page or use the RED MENU BAR. Alternatively, if you remember the topic of the essay, use the search bar. You can find it in the right hand column of any page (on a laptop) or scroll down to find it on a phone.

Thank you so much Liz for all you do. I’m practically an advocate of Liz IELTS videos, learning from your website has made me a loyal fan of yours.

I received my test report form and my scores are as follows. L, R, W, S are 8.0, 7.5, 7.0 and 7.5 respectively with an aggregate band score of 7.5.

Thank you once again.

Great results 🙂 Very well done 🙂

Hi liz, thanks for sharing your essay it is very useful. Sometimes I struggle with the use of passive voice with two objects. Could you please tell me where my mistake is:

Active: Companies will probably decline to give foundations their profits.

Passive: Foundations will probably be declined to give profits by companies.

Using the passive voice is all about choosing which sentences are better using passive and which are better using active. That sentence works with an active voice, not a passive voice. Please get my Grammar E-book which has a whole chapter on using the passive voice: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/ . We only use passive voice at certain times. So, do not attempt to change every sentence into a passive – it doesn’t work that way.

' src=

Thank you Liz, essay is really awesome with good vocabularies it will definitely going to help me. Thank you once again

' src=

Thanks a lot Liz for your mails. My exam is on 17th and 18th July.Your videos ans essays helped me a lot.still I prepare for my exam

Thanks for ur help Liz.i am grateful.

' src=

Thank you Liz for sharing this. Pls I have a question which , I have asked before. Am confused on which to prepare and write, general or Acedemic? Am a registered Nurse in my country, just moved to UK to join my family. I want to register with the NMC here in the UK but I don’t know which to prepare for.

You should ask which ever authority you will be applying to for your registration. It will probably be Academic, but you must ask them directly for their requirements. Good luck!

' src=

Thank you Liz. The essay was tough but you have made it doable. I am grateful.

' src=

Thank you so much dear Liz, Although you have explained the question that I would have asked, yet, It’s a little bit confused. The question boldly wrote “did you agree or disagree” but your explanation said they were only asking for our opinion. Could you please shed more light, because if I have met such in exam, I don’t think I will state my opion, rather, write on just aspect.

Thank you so much.

An Opinion Essay is an essay which requires you to present your personal opinion on the issue presented in the statement. The instructions can be paraphrased: Do you agree or disagree / do you agree / to what extent do you agree – they are all the same essay type. They just require an opinion. In my Advanced Lessons it takes me one hour to teach this type of essay.

' src=

The essay on airline benefit for first class is balanced approach or one sided? I have taken your advanced lesson but in that template I see only one sided where two reasons are given and for balanced approach, it is specifically for certain people. My question: why in this essay both side are discussed? We should have two reasons why we agree to one side.

This is a partial agreement. I am present my own specific view. A balanced view doesn’t have to be about people – it is anything which provides an opinion clearly that doesn’t agree 100% with either side. In this essay, I am agree to a point that first class has advantages, but then I am pointing out that technical advances benefits all. The number of body paragraphs should match the number of main points you have.

' src=

You indeed have a heart of gold, this is something that most people will publish and use to make money from their readers but you rushed to present it to your readers, not only professionally but also free of charge just for their own success. The world certainly needs more people like you to make any remarkable progress!

Just a quick question, I actually asked in another comment but no response yet; please in not more than two words and or numbers will this be correct or over the count; 11th 13th june. Will the th count as words?

No more than two words and/or numbers. This means you can have many numbers – the words “numbers” is plural. In that answer, you have one word and two numbers. “th” is not a word, it is actually part of the number.

' src=

Awesome!!!! I personally adore how crafty you are in writing. God bless you. You have impacted a lot in me. Love you soooo much.

' src=

I completely misunderstood the question. I thought it meant first class airlines or air travel companies instead of passengers. Please ma, how would it have affected my band score.

Thanks alot ma for sharing this.

First class is a type of ticket. If you got that wrong, you would get a low score on Task Response which is 25% of your marks for task 2.

' src=

Thanks for sharing, its really helpful. Not everyone will be able to attempt this question but with your model answer we can do better.

' src=

Hi, Liz thank you so very much for your effort. I purchase the E-book for ideas and it is very helpful now I want to purchase the advanced topics although now they are in a very good and affordable price I need the advanced topic only how can I get it

All my Advanced Lessons and E-books are available in my online store: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/ . I don’t have many available because I spend more time preparing free materials than I do preparing advanced lessons in my store.

' src=

What a kindness Lady 🙂!

' src=

Thanks allot mam , its really helpful . As i don’t have much experience about air travel ,i think it’s useful for every ielts aspirants.

' src=

Thank you for this essay model. God bless you liz.

Hi Liz,its very effective specially vocabulary will help alot but i have a confusion in essay agree or disagree we have to agree with one statement in this essay i couldn’t understand that you are agree or not?

You do not have to agree or disagree. This is an Opinion Essay and your task is to give your opinion on the issue or issues given. You do not have to take a one sided approach.

' src=

I would never have written up to 150 words on this topic. I have never boarded a plane so i will not even have an imagination or proper vocabulary to write this essay. Thanks for sharing Liz

Luckily, you are now prepared for this topic. Also review all common essay questions in the main Writing Task 2 section of this website. It isn’t often that topics are this challenging, but you can prepare for them.

' src=

This is very helpful, thank you Liz!

' src=

Thank you Liz, I would have taken a one sided approach if I should be confronted with this question as the balanced approach is somehow complex for me. My exam is on July 25th, your materials have been very helpful in my preparation. I hope you’re in good health now? Please stay safe.

Thank you for your selflessness.

If you are not comfortable with the balanced approach (partial agreement), definitely go for the one sided approach. You don’t get a higher score because you’ve got a different opinion. However, be careful with essay questions that tackle two issues rather than one. For example: “We should build more houses instead of parks” – even a one sided approach must tackle both issues – you disagree with one and agree with the other. Thanks for asking about my health. I have a long term illness which will take me a couple more years to recover from. This year will be particularly challenging for me – but I keep my fingers crossed 🙂

' src=

Thanks Liz Greatfull

' src=

Hi liz Very true. This is off beat topic, less people r aware of specific grammar and Ammenties used.. I was little stuck on reading.. Thanks for help

' src=

Thank you, Liz. Please, I’m confused on how to count words – help me understand better.

The same as word docs count words. Every single word is counted.

' src=

It is so unfair to ask people to write an essay on this topic. I wouldn’t manage to write on this topic even in my native language.

But now you can. Your task is to prepare as many topics as well. Travel is a very common topic – even in IELTS Speaking. Start learning and thinking about it. There is no point being negative about it. Be proactive and be happy that I am giving you as much as I can to help you.

' src=

Thanks Ma’am! Really helpful. ☺️🙏😘

' src=

Waooo so helpful thanks lizzy

I’m glad it’s useful 🙂

' src=

Thank you Liz!

' src=

well written

' src=

Very educative.

' src=

Thanks for sharing your model essay. It seems to me that this topic demands some subject knowledge as opposed to knowledge of language to be able to write properly and efficiently. It would not be fair for those who do not have experience of travelling through the plane and might be quite challenging to write and getting idea regardless of language competency, I guess.

This is the reason I have created this model essay for you. So you can learn about this topic an gain useful language. It is not often you get a topic which is so subject specific. Rather than seeing this as a negative thing, see this model essays as a chance to get ahead and develop your English.

Thanks so much

Essay 259 – Air travel has become a much cheaper form of transport

Gt writing task 2 / essay sample # 259.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

In some countries, air travel has become a much cheaper form of transport than in the past. Some people say this is a positive development while others disagree.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

In many parts of the world, air travel has become an astonishingly cheaper mode of transport than ever before. Many contend that this is a positive development, yet others beg to differ. This essay will discuss both viewpoints, but personally, I think that it is a positive development.

On the one hand, cheap air travel brings about an exponential increase in the number of flights, thereby raising the substantial amount of jet fuel burnt each day. It results in a massive increase in carbon emissions, which means that cheap flights accelerate global warming. As a consequence of global warming, our climate is already commencing to change. This is why a series of environmental catastrophes have befallen the earth of late. Thus, cheap air travel is harmful to the environment.

On the other hand, cheap flights provide vital socio-economic benefits. First of all, it improves living standards by broadening individuals’ leisure and cultural experiences. In fact, cheap air travel offers a wide choice of tourist destinations across the globe and an economical means to visit distant relatives and friends. Besides, it stimulates sustainable development. By promoting tourism and trade, cheap flights generate job opportunities, economic growth, produce revenues from tax, and promote conservation of protected areas. According to a report published in the Financial Express in 2020, for example, 8.5 million jobs are created in the air transport industry due to the cheap plane fare, and this contribution to global GDP is US$ 189 billion. Thus, this essay finds that cheap air travel is a positive development.

In conclusion, although cheap flights have an environmental impact, I feel that it is a positive development in the sense that it reaps considerable socio-economic benefits. Therefore, governments should foster the air transport industries.

CABIN BAGS FOR AIR TRAVEL reading answers

CABIN BAGS FOR AIR TRAVEL

If you want a small bag with wheels that you can take onto the plane with you, there’s a wide choice. Here are some of the best.

The  Flyer B3  is an ultra-lightweight cabin bag which can withstand some pretty harsh treatment, its nylon and polyester sides won’t rip or burst open if it’s dropped or thrown whilst in transit. However, the trolley handle feels quite thin and flimsy. The top carrying handle is hard and flat, and the side handle isn’t easy to grip.

The  Lightglide  has two external pockets, both of which are zipped and lockable, but the inside pocket does not zip. In tests, we found the contents remain dry when given a good soaking, even around the zips. The trolley handle has a choice of two heights and the plastic hand grip doesn’t have any sharp ridges that’ll make your hands sore. For carrying there are fabric handles at the top and side.

The  Foxton  is easy to control across most surfaces. However, the zips don’t always run smoothly especially around the corners, so you may have to give them a good tug, especially if the case is very full. This is definitely one to avoid if you’re going somewhere rainy as it lets loads of water in, and documents in the pockets will also get pretty wet unless they’re in plastic folders.

The  Skybag  has a single external zipped pocket and another located inside the lid. Your clothes are kept in place by two adjustable straps. The zips are easy to grip and they run smoothly around the case. However, this cabin bag felt a little heavy to pull on all but smooth floors, and it was hard to steer compared with some of the other suitcases.

The  Travelsure   35  is available in a huge range of fabric designs including leopard print or lipstick kisses. The retractable trolley handle is comfortable but can’t be adjusted to suit users of different heights. There’s no internal divider, but there are two handy zipped pockets in the lid. We test each bag by letting it fall onto a hard floor – and our results show that you’ll have to treat this bag with great care if you want it to last. The fabric tore so badly at one of the corners that it was unusable.
