The belt routing diagram is located on the top radiator cross member by the hood latch. You should see it when you open the hood. If it is not there, all Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth minivans, from 1993 to at least 1999, used the same 3.3L engine setup, so find someone with one and look for the diagram where I described.

On the 1999 Dakota with the 3.9liter, the fan shroud absolutely DOES NOT have to be removed. Very simple job. Simply use a breaker bar with a 15mm socket on the belt tesioner pulley nut. Using the breaker bar push (as though tightening) the pulley nut...the reaction will be that the tensioner removes tension from the pulley and the entire belt can be removed by easily slipping it toward the front of the vehicle...comes right off. The new belt can go back on in exactly the same manner. By the way the belt routing diagram IS CONVIENENTLY LOCATED between the hood latch and the radiator mounting for simple and quick refernce...one person job, I did removal and installation four times in less than 10 minutes. (why four times? The auto parts store was selling replacement belts that were too long and did not allow the belt tensioner to provide suffiecient tension...I had to try four different manufacturers before the tensioner was adequately tight with room to grow as the belt naturally stretches from use.). I found no stringing around the fan is required because of the way the belt is routed (it doglegs around the main engine pulley which is centered below the fanhousing and then the belt runs from there to the left side of the fan housing...avoiding the fan/fanhousing all-together (sure you can try to go past the fan/fan housing if you so desire...but you dont have to...and besides the space between the pulleys and the fan is ample to allow the belt to pass between with minimal interference or a simple rotation of the fan as you attempt this method. One hint that made my installs easy as pie...the last pulley you put it over should not be a bezeled and ridged pulley or you will needlessly make life difficult for yourself...the last pulley should be the water pump pulley which is a smooth bore and non-ridged pulley (makes you wonder how the belt even stays on it!)...making it easy as pie to slip it right over...as your last act of defiance to that mean old serpentine belt!

By chance, have you looked on the underside of your hood, most, if not all vehicles have the diagram there, it should be a white sticker with the pulleys and everything.

3.3L? Looking at the engine from front (right side of the Van): Stating at the Top, Going Left to Right and Clockwise: Over the Alternator To under the Idle Pulley, To Over the AC Compressor. To the Left Side of the Water Pump. To the Right side and Under the Crankshaft Pulley To the Right side and Over and Down the Tensioner To Under the Power Steering Pump And Back up-to the Left side of the Alternator. Advise when puting it on: Put the Belt around everything else accept for the Alternator. After it is around all the rest of the Pulleys - Pull the belt up - tight from the Power steering Pump and the Idle Pulley to form a loop, holding the Belt close to the Altenator Pulley. Using the 15mm wrench or belt tensioner bar - rotate the Tensioner Pulley towards the front of the Van and then place the belt over the Alternator. Dodge Journey:  Bad Serpentine Belt

One of the most common issues with a vehicle is a bad serpentine belt.  If you suspect that your Dodge Journey has this problem, we’ll give you the common symptoms below, as well as how to replace it.

The good news is that serpentine belts are cheap , and in the grand scheme of things, relatively easy to replace.  The sound that a bad serpentine belt makes is a squealing sound.  It has a higher pitch than an engine rattling .

Bad Serpentine Belt Symptoms:  Dodge Journey

Here are the most common symptoms of a bad serpentine belt in the Dodge Journey:

Squealing Belt

Often, the first sign of a bad serpentine belt in your Journey is squealing.  The squealing should match the engine RPM.  That is to say, that when you rev the engine, the squeal changes pitch accordingly. 

It might also go away entirely if you rev your engine a few times.  This happens because the serpentine belt gets heat in it and is able to grab ahold of the pulleys.  At this point it is no longer slipping.  It’s a matter of time before revving the engine no longer corrects the problem.

Visible Wear and Cracking on the Belt

As your serpentine belt ages, it will begin to show visible signs of wear.  These belts are not designed to last the life of an engine.  A bad serpentine belt may have:

• Smooth Surface
• Missing Pieces
• Uneven Wear
• Missing/Damaged Ribs

Any of these items are enough to replace the belt.  

Engine Accessories Not Working

The serpentine belt powers your engine accessories, such as the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor.  If these accessories are not working, that’s an indication that the serpentine belt is shot or missing entirely.  Get a new belt immediately. 

Overheating

The serpentine belt is responsible for turning the water pump in your Journey.  If it fails, water can no longer circulate throughout the engine.  You also shouldn’t have power steering (although some vehicles now have electric power steering so be careful).

If the belt is off all the way, or the engine is overheating, do not drive it somewhere to have it looked at.  Overheating the engine and blowing a head gasket will cost way more than a new serpentine belt.

Dodge Journey Serpentine Belt Replacement

Replacing a serpentine belt is a straightforward process.  Your Journey uses a tensioner to keep the serpentine belt tight. 

The first thing you are going to need to do is find the tensioner and apply force to it in order to loosen the serpentine belt.  Once you’ve applied force you can pull the belt off of a pulley.  Now, let off the tensioner slowly.

We recommend taking a picture of the belt route, and making sure that you have a diagram of the route before taking the belt off.  The last thing you want is to not remember how to get the belt back on.  You should see a sticker under your Journey’s hood with serpentine belt route information.
