American Express premium credit cards offer some of the best perks in the credit card space. While lounge access and travel credits are typically the highlights of these cards, some of the lesser-known benefits, such as trip delay reimbursement and trip cancellation and interruption insurance, are becoming hot topics as the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact the travel industry.

What is covered by trip cancellation and interruption insurance?

amex everyday credit card travel insurance

You can find the full terms and conditions of what is generally covered on your respective card in your Guide to Benefits, which can be found through your online account. I'll use the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve as an example.

Here is a rundown of the "covered losses" provided by Amex's trip cancellation and interruption insurance:

  • Accidental bodily injury or loss of life or sickness of either the eligible traveler, traveling companion or a family member of the eligible traveler or traveling companion
  • Inclement weather, which prevents a reasonable and prudent person from traveling or continuing on a covered trip
  • The eligible traveler or his or her spouse's change in military orders
  • Terrorist action or hijacking
  • Call to jury duty or subpoena by the courts, either of which cannot be postponed or waived
  • The eligible traveler or traveling companion's dwelling made uninhabitable
  • Quarantine imposed by a physician for health reasons

Related: Book carefully if you have multiple Amex cards that offer travel protections

Amex also provides an extensive list of things that are not covered by trip cancellation/interruption insurance:

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • The eligible traveler's suicide, attempted suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injury
  • A declared or undeclared war
  • Mental or emotional disorders, unless hospitalized
  • The eligible traveler's participation in a sporting activity for which he or she receives a salary or prize money
  • The eligible traveler's being intoxicated at the time of an accident. Intoxication is defined by the laws of the jurisdiction where such accident occurs
  • The eligible traveler being under the influence of any narcotic or other controlled substance at the time of an accident, unless the narcotic or other controlled substance is taken and used as prescribed by a Physician
  • The eligible traveler's commission or attempted commission of any illegal or criminal act, including but not limited to any felony
  • The eligible traveler parachuting from an aircraft
  • The eligible traveler engaging or participating in a motorized vehicular race or speed contest
  • Dental treatment except as a result of accidental bodily injury to sound, natural teeth
  • Any non-emergency treatment or surgery, routine physical examinations
  • Hearing aids, eyeglasses or contact lenses
  • One-way travel that does not have a return destination
  • A counterfeit scheduled airline or train ticket; or a scheduled airline or train ticket which is charged to a fraudulently issued or fraudulently used eligible card.
  • Any occurrence while the eligible traveler is incarcerated
  • Loss due to intentional acts by the eligible traveler
  • Financial insolvency of a travel agency, tour operator or travel supplier
  • Any expenses that are not authorized and reimbursable by the eligible traveler's employer if the eligible traveler makes the purchases with a commercial card

If you do find yourself canceling or cutting a covered trip short, here are the basic guidelines provided by Amex on what types of expenses are covered for trip cancellation/interruption:

"If a Covered Loss causes an Eligible Traveler's Trip Interruption, we will reimburse you for the nonrefundable amount paid to a Travel Supplier with your Eligible Card for the following: 1. The forfeited, non-refundable, pre-paid land, air and sea transportation arrangements that were missed; and 2. Additional transportation expenses that the Eligible Traveler incurs less any available refunds, not to exceed the cost of an economy-class air ticket by the most direct route for the Eligible Traveler to rejoin his or her places of origin.
If a Covered Loss causes an Eligible Traveler to temporarily postpone transportation by Common Carrier for a Covered Trip and a new departure date is set, we will reimburse you for the following: 1. The additional expenses incurred to purchase tickets for the new departure (not to exceed the difference between the original fare and the economy fare for the rescheduled Covered Trip by the most direct route); and 2. The unused, non-refundable land, air, and sea arrangements paid to a Travel Supplier with your Eligible Card."

What is covered by trip delay insurance?

amex everyday credit card travel insurance

Trip delay coverage provides reimbursement for reasonable additional expenses incurred when your trip is delayed due to a covered hazard for more than six hours.

Coverage is limited to $500 per trip and cardmembers are only eligible for two claims each 12 consecutive month period.

Amex outlines what is not covered, which includes the following:

  • Covered losses that are made public or known to the eligible traveler prior to the departure for the covered trip
  • An eligible traveler's expenses paid prior to the covered trip

Filing a claim

When you have a delay or trip cancellation/interruption that you think qualifies for coverage, you can file a claim by calling Amex at 1-844-933-0648 within 60 days of the covered loss.

Trip delay reimbursement requires the following documentation:

  • Proof of loss – You must furnish written proof of loss to Amex within 180 days after the date of your loss
  • Receipts - Acceptable documentation includes the following:
  • A statement from the common carrier that the covered trip was delayed
  • Charge receipt
  • Copies of common carrier ticket(s)
  • Receipts for travel expenses

Trip cancellation/interruption insurance requires slightly different documentation.

  • Proof of loss – You must furnish written proof of loss to Amex within 180 days after the date of your loss. Acceptable documentation includes:
  • Court subpoenas, orders to report for active duty, physician orders, etc.
  • Copies of your common carrier tickets and travel supplier receipt
  • Your eligible card billing statement showing the charges for the covered trip
  • Copy of travel supplier's cancelation policy

After Amex receives notice of your claim, instructions will be sent on how to send the proof. Typically, you have up to 180 days to file a claim after a delay or cancellation.

Proof of flight delay or cancellation

One of the documents required to file for trip delay reimbursement is a verification form that outlines the reason for the delay or cancellation by the carrier. You can typically get this at the airport when the delay or cancellation is announced, but keep in mind that it may require a supervisor. Each U.S. major airline also has a process for requesting this information after the fact.

Here is an overview of the process that major U.S. airlines require for you to receive a delay or cancellation verification form:

Amex cards that offer car rental insurance

Unfortunately, no American Express credit cards offer primary car rental coverage, although most offer secondary coverage. You can see the entire list of cards that offer secondary car rental protection on the American Express website . However, all American Express credit cards offer an optional "Premium Car Rental Protection policy" that can be added to rentals made using the card for a small fee.

Read our guide on when to use American Express' Premium Car Rental Protection for more details on this coverage option.

amex everyday credit card travel insurance

You can add Premium Car Rental Protection to any American Express card . TPG has a guide of the best American Express cards , but here are some of the best cards in terms of the return you could receive when renting a car. Note, the estimated return rate for these cards is based on TPG's latest valuations:

  • Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card: $450 annual fee (see rates and fees); 4.2% return on car rentals booked directly from car rental companies; no foreign transaction fees (see rates and fees)
  • The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express: $0 annual fee (see rates and fees); 4% return on general spending on the first $50,000 in purchases per calendar year and 1x thereafter; 2.7% foreign transaction fee (see rates and fees)
  • The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express: $95 annual fee; 3% return on general spending in billing cycles where you make 30+ purchases; 2.7% foreign transaction fee

The information for the Amex EveryDay Preferred card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Amex cards that offer baggage insurance

amex everyday credit card travel insurance

If you're a frequent traveler, you've likely run into this situation at some point (it's the worst). Over the years, airlines have been working on improving the baggage system by introducing live bag tracking. Regardless, it's still a smart idea to have some protections in place, like baggage insurance.

Related: Everything you need to know about Amex's baggage insurance plan

This is why you need to pay attention to the benefits each of your travel rewards cards offers. Nearly all of Amex's premium rewards cards offer baggage insurance. You can check out the full list of cards and details on American Express's website.

The types of losses it covers: You're covered for losses resulting from damaged, stolen or lost baggage, including both carry-on and checked bags.

When you're covered: To be eligible for coverage, you have to travel on a common carrier, which Amex defines as any air, land or water vehicle (other than a personal or rental vehicle) that is licensed to carry passengers for hire and available to the public. Your rental car, as well as taxis and ride-share services such as Uber and Lyft, would be excluded from this protection.

To receive coverage, you also need to pay for the entire fare with an eligible American Express card or by using Membership Rewards points to book tickets through Amex Travel . Trips booked with miles from other sources — even the cobranded Delta SkyMiles cards from Amex — are excluded. Your trip also isn't covered if you used a combination of miles and dollars unless the miles came from a Membership Rewards transfer. This is a welcome change. A few years ago, a TPG staffer found out the hard way that Amex's policy didn't cover frequent flyer mile awards.

Who's covered: This policy covers both primary and additional cardholders, as well as cardmembers' spouses or domestic partners and any dependent children under 23 years old. In addition, travelers must be permanent residents of one of the 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

How much it covers: Most American Express credit cards will cover replacement costs for checked bags and their contents up to $500 per person, although so-called "high-risk items" are only covered for a maximum of $250. These items include jewelry, sporting equipment, photographic or electronic equipment, computers and audio/visual equipment. Carry-on bags are covered for up to $1,250, which is good to know since your belongings could be stolen from the overhead bins.

You'll enjoy additional coverage if you use The Platinum Card from American Express, The Business Platinum Card from American Express, the Platinum Card from American Express Exclusively for Mercedes-Benz and Morgan Stanley-branded Platinum Card (but not the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card).

The information for the Amex Platinum Mercedes-Benz and Morgan Stanley Platinum card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Amex cards that offer medical assistance

amex everyday credit card travel insurance

One of the lesser known benefits of some of Amex's most premium cards is its Premium Global Assistance. This benefit can quite literally be a lifesaver if you or an immediate family member run into any unexpected issues or accident on your trip. For example, this service can help you arrange emergency medical referrals.

All Amex cards have access to Amex's Global Assist Hotline, but the Premium Global Assist Hotline and higher level of coverage are reserved exclusively for the Amex's premium cards:

  • The Platinum Card from American Express
  • The Business Platinum Card from American Express
  • American Express Corporate Platinum Card
  • Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card
  • American Express Centurion Card
  • American Express Business Centurion Card

The information for the Amex Centurion and Amex Business Centurion cards has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Bottom line

Having a card with trip insurance can save you hundreds of dollars when unexpected hiccups happen in your travel plans. Still, it can be confusing to know what is covered and the right documentation you need to file a claim.

Nothing is worse than getting through an entire claims process only to be denied or have to start over because you don't have the required documentation for the insurance provider. Before you start filing a claim, make sure you have the documents listed above. Keep in mind that a provider may ask for additional documentation related to the incident, so you may have to collect receipts and other forms to help your case.

If you're starting to travel again, it's also a good idea to consider booking refundable travel . Some airlines and hotels even waive cancelation fees and/or change fees for certain fares, which can make last-minute adjustments in the case of emergencies.

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card is American Express's entry-level card for earning valuable Membership Rewards points. Beyond the ability to earn Amex points without paying an annual fee, the Amex Everyday card's standout feature is a 20% points bonus when you make at least 20 transactions in a billing cycle.

Amex EveryDay Overview

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card is American Express's entry-level card for earning valuable Membership Rewards points. American Express has several different cards that earn Membership Rewards points, including the American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express, but among personal Amex cards, the Amex Everyday card is the only option that earns Membership Rewards points with no annual fee . (On the business card side, The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express earns Membership Rewards with no annual fee.)

If you want to cancel one of your Amex cards with a high annual fee, you'll need to make sure that you keep at least one card that earns Membership Rewards points. Otherwise, you run the risk of losing your hard-earned points. The Amex EveryDay card can be a great long-term option in this case, since it has no annual fee.

Beyond the ability to earn Amex points without paying an annual fee, the Amex Everyday card's standout feature is a 20% points bonus when you make at least 20 transactions in a billing cycle. This means you'll effectively earn 2.4x points at US supermarkets (up to $6,000 spent per year) if you hit that requirement, and your non-bonus purchases will earn you 1.2x points. For those who can earn the bonus each month, this is a great option to maximize spending that doesn't qualify for traditional bonus categories like groceries and dining.

Amex EveryDay Benefits

Monthly transaction bonus.

One unique feature of the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card (and the Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card ) is its bonus depending on the number of transactions you have in a given statement period. If you make 20 or more transactions in a billing cycle (roughly equivalent to 1 month), you will get a 20% bonus on the Membership Rewards points that you will earn that month. This is a great way to boost your points earnings, and it's a strong incentive for making the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card your go-to card, especially for purchases that wouldn't otherwise earn you bonus rewards.

Car rental loss and damage insurance

The Amex Everyday card doesn't offer much in the way of additional benefits, but it does include car rental loss and damage insurance, which lets you decline any paid insurance add-ons when you rent a car. Just note that this coverage is secondary rather than primary, meaning it will kick in only after your other car insurance policy's coverage is used.

Amex EveryDay costs and fees

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card has very few fees, and most of them can be avoided by being diligent with your financial habits. It comes with a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months from the date of account opening and then converts to a 12.99% - 23.99% Variable APR.

If you do a cash advance, it comes with a fee of $10 or 5% of the amount of each cash advance, whichever is greater. The APR on cash advances varies with the prime rate.

Late and returned payments charge a fee of $40 each. If you use the Amex EveryDay card outside the United States, it comes with a foreign transaction fee of 2.7%. Instead use one of the many great cards with no foreign transaction fees .

Amex EveryDay Rewards

Unlike with Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou points, with American Express's Membership Rewards program, you only have one points-earning account no matter how many credit cards you have. If you redeem your Membership Rewards points through the Amex Travel site, you'll get a value of 0.7 to 1. cents per point. But by transferring your points to Amex's hotel or airline travel partners, your points can be worth much more.

Benefits and perks

A modest welcome bonus.

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card offers this bonus: Earn 10,000 Membership Rewards® Points after you use your new Card to make $2,000 in purchases within the first 6 months of Card Membership. Terms apply. The rewards are relatively modest, but they're certainly better than no incentives at all. NerdWallet values Membership Rewards points at a baseline average of 1 cent apiece. So a 10,000-point offer may equate to $100. Or, if you transfer to travel partners, you could earn outsize value for your points.

A lengthy 0% intro APR on purchases

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card offers new cardholders an interest-free window on purchases: 0% Intro on Purchases for 15 months, and then the ongoing APR of 17.99%-28.99% Variable APR . ( see rates and fees ). That’s enough time to finance a big purchase or several small ones.

A 20% increase in rewards

The card's 20% points bonus is better than nothing, but it’s not automatic. Only after using the card 20 or more times in a billing period will you qualify for the higher rate. Assuming you get a value of 1 cent per point, that boosts the effective rewards rate to 1.2% on purchases, and 2.4% in the bonus categories. However, plenty of other cards offer better rates.

Drawbacks and considerations

You can get a better bonus and uncapped rewards.

The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card earns an unlimited 2% cash back on all purchases. That effectively doubles the base rate of the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card . This card also has a $0 annual fee and a better sign-up offer: Earn a $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first 3 months.

Fatter grocery rewards are available elsewhere ...

If you spend a lot of money on groceries, other cards can reward you much more handsomely. The $0 -annual-fee Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express , for instance, earns 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets, at U.S. gas stations and on U.S. online retail purchases (on up to $6,000 per year in spending in each category). Other purchases earn 1% back. Terms apply.

For rewards on grocery store purchases without a cap, the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card is a solid option. It offers 8% cash back on Capital One Entertainment purchases and 3% back on dining, eligible streaming services, grocery store purchases and entertainment. All other purchases earn 1% back. It has a $0 annual fee.

... as are richer travel rewards

While the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card packs some travel-friendly features and incentives, it doesn’t offer the most value. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card can inch you closer to a vacation with standout rewards on everyday purchases and travel. It earns 5 points per $1 spent on all travel purchased through Chase, 3 points per $1 spent on online grocery purchases, 3 points per $1 spent on dining, 3 points per $1 spent on streaming services, 2 points per $1 spent on travel not purchased through Chase and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases.

It does have a $95 annual fee, but the perks can potentially make up for it. Cardholders get a $50 annual credit on hotel stays purchased through Chase. Plus, it has a healthy sign-up offer: Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Travel℠.

Although the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card attempts to appeal to travelers with bonus rewards for certain travel, it's not a good card to take with you abroad, since it charges a foreign transaction fee of 2.7%. The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card charges no such fees. Further, its rewards are more flexible for travelers. Earn 2 miles per dollar spent, and miles can be redeemed for a statement credit against any travel purchase — no matter how you booked it. This card comes with a hefty sign-up offer: Enjoy a one-time bonus of 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel. There is an annual fee, however: $95 .

alternate-pick-product-card-image

Earn 5% cash back on up to $500 spent in your highest spend category per billing cycle from a list of 10 eligible options (including grocery stores and select travel). All other purchases get 1% back. The card also has a sign-up offer: Earn $200 cash back after you spend $1,500 on purchases in the first 6 months of account opening. This bonus offer will be fulfilled as 20,000 ThankYou® Points, which can be redeemed for $200 cash back.

How to decide if it's right for you

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card is OK as a rewards card, and it doesn’t cost you anything to carry. But there are much better rewards cards available for everyday and travel spending.

Methodology

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card. Learn how NerdWallet rates credit cards.

Frequently asked questions

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card is a rewards credit card that offers 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent at U.S. supermarkets, on up to $6,000 spent per year, and 1 point per dollar spent on everything else. Further, if you use the card for purchases 20 or more times in a billing period, you get 20% more points for those purchases. Terms apply. It’s the only $0 -annual-fee American Express credit card that earns Membership Rewards points.

For a time, the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card was also an outstanding balance transfer card, with a long 0% intro APR period and a $0 introductory balance transfer fee. Its balance-transfer benefits were discontinued in 2020.

Even if you maximize your rewards at U.S. supermarkets and earn the 20% points bonus by using the card 20 or more times each billing period, the card will probably fall short compared with options that give you a flat 2% cash back on everything . If elevated rewards on purchases at supermarkets are specifically what you’re after, there are other credit cards with no annual fee that reward that spending category more generously.

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express earns cash back rather than points, and more of it: 3% back at U.S. supermarkets, at U.S. gas stations and on U.S. online retail purchases (on up to $6,000 spent per year in each category), and 1% on everything else.

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card earns 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 spent per year and 1 point per dollar on everything else. Both cards have a $0 annual fee. Terms apply.

Bonus rewards at U.S. supermarkets are capped at $6,000 a year in spending, but there is no limit on the total rewards you can earn. Beyond the 2X bonus rewards, you still earn 1 point per dollar on all spending. Terms apply.

The annual fee is $0 . Terms apply.

Amex® EveryDay Preferred Credit Card overview

If you’re stocking up on rewards for a future getaway, the Amex Everyday Preferred credit card and its 50 percent extra points perk make it a competitive option if you take frequent trips to the supermarket and gas station.Use your Card 30 or more times on purchases in a billing period and earn 50 percent extra points on those purchases minus returns and credits.

However, this card’s value seems to ride the fence—its features aren’t specially built for travel or cash back. Once you recognize its middle-ground nature, you’ll notice that the Everyday Preferred’s true talent is its synergy with other American Express credit cards .

What are the pros and cons?

3X Amex Membership Rewards points at U.S. supermarkets, with 2X points at U.S. gas stations and on rental cars booked through Amex Travel

Increase your rewards value by 0.5 points if you make more than 30 separate purchases within one billing cycle

$95 annual fee

Points dip in value—usually by 20 to 40 percent—if redeemed for non-travel rewards

A deeper look into the current card offer

Quick highlights.

  • Rewards rate : 3X points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1X points), 2X points at U.S. gas stations and on rental cars booked through American Express Travel with 1X points on all other purchases
  • Welcome offer : 15,000 points after spending $1,000 in purchases within first three months
  • Annual fee : $95
  • Purchase intro APR : 0 percent intro APR for 12 months
  • Balance transfer intro APR : 0 percent intro APR for 12 months (on balance transfers requested within 60 days of account opening)
  • Regular APR : 18.24 percent to 28.24 percent (variable)

Current welcome offer

As a new cardholder, you can earn 15,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $1,000 in purchases during your first three months.

This welcome bonus isn’t a bad by any means, but how valuable it’ll be varies greatly depending on what you redeem it for. Bankrate values each point at a stellar 2.0 cents through certain transfer options. In that case, your intro bonus would be worth up to $315. But the point value can sharply drop if you put them toward non-travel options. Redeeming for cash back via statement credit would reduce this intro offer’s value to $90.

However, other cards with a similar annual fee may offer much more valuable introductory bonuses. For example, if you can meet the spending requirement of $4,000 in your first three months, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers: 60,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points. That’s worth $750 when you redeem through Chase Travel℠.

The American Express Membership Rewards points you’ll be earning are some of the most valuable travel rewards on the market, and the Amex Everyday Preferred credit card is one of the best ways to earn them from day-to-day expenses.

Earning rewards

You can earn 3 points per dollar spent at U.S. supermarkets, on up to $6,000 per year in purchases before reverting to 1X points. You’ll also earn 2 points per dollar at U.S. gas stations, 2 points per dollar on prepaid rental cars booked through American Express Travel and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

There are a few ways to earn bonus points here and there, like the Amex Offers program and 2X points on amextravel.com purchases, but the best reward feature of this card is the 50 percent extra points benefit. If you make 30 or more separate purchases with your card during a billing period, you’ll earn 50 percent additional points. For example, 30 purchases totaling $1,000 in your 3X U.S. supermarket category, will net you 4,500 points — 3,000 points initially, plus another 1,500 points sprinkled on top.

Redeeming rewards

Membership Rewards are prized for their versatile spread of redemption choices, travel options and transfer partners . Booking a good travel deal through the American Express Travel portal or finding a 1:1 transfer partner will be the most valuable uses of your points, however, since non-travel options typically water down the value to less than 1 cent apiece.

If you choose to go the non-travel route, you can also redeem your points for statement credits, gift cards and merchandise. Plus, you can use your points to cover recent card charges or pay for your online shopping purchases at select merchants’ checkout screens (like Amazon.com and rental cars through amextravel.com).

How much are points worth?

Like we previously mentioned, Membership Rewards points are some of the most valuable travel rewards available—at 2.0 cents apiece—if you spend them on travel or transfer them to certain Amex partner loyalty programs, according to Bankrate's latest valuations .

Your mileage will vary if you decide to redeem for anything else. American Express has a useful rewards calculator that can show how much your point value can dip—down to half-value in some cases. Points are only worth 0.7 cents apiece if you’re paying with points at checkout for retailers like Amazon and PayPal, but redeeming for cash back in the form of a statement credit will only net you 0.6 cents per point.

But a new special offer allows select cardholders will be able to redeem reward points at a boosted 1 cent-per-point rate to cover card charges—a 40 percent increase from the standard redemption value for statement credits. Travel might still be a more valuable use of your rewards, but it’s an offer worth considering if you’re planning to steer clear of travel for now.

Other cardholder perks

The other benefits that come with the Amex Everyday Preferred aren’t entirely competitive at this annual fee level. Still, the standard American Express perks like Pay It Plan It, ShopRunner membership (enrollment required) and travel protections can be useful.

Pay It Plan It

If you’re trying interest from eating into your rewards after a large purchase, the Pay It Plan It alternative payment features could help out in a pinch.

Rather than add a new purchase directly to your balance, Pay It can settle a small purchase under $100 immediately, while Plan It allows you to move $100+ purchases into fixed-rate payment plans within your credit card limit. Be sure to use American Express’ pre-purchase calculator to make sure the monthly plan fees on your Plan It purchases won’t outweigh the cost in interest.

Complimentary ShopRunner membership

As an eligible Amex cardholder, you’ll receive a complimentary ShopRunner membership (enrollment required). Once you sign up, ShopRunner grants you free two-day shipping and free returns on qualifying items at over 100 retailer sites.

Travel and shopping protections

The Amex Everyday Preferred carries a decent suite of travel and shopping protections . The extended warranty coverage, purchase protection and car rental loss and damage insurance are standard for American Express cards. But this card also comes with return protection for normally ineligible purchases—a useful perk that is slowly disappearing among credit cards ( see full terms ).

Rates and fees

The Amex Everyday Preferred credit card is a relatively low-cost card. In fact, the lower end of the 18.24 percent to 28.24 percent (variable) ongoing APR is well below the current average interest rate . Plus, the 12-month intro zero interest purchase APR can give you some wiggle room on large purchases coming up.

Unfortunately, the Amex Everyday Preferred isn’t currently accepting balance transfers if you’re looking to reduce your current balance.

The main costs worth noting are the 2.7 percent foreign transaction fee if you take your card with you overseas and the $95 annual fee. Even then, it only takes spending $132 each month in your 3X-point category (based on the 2 cent-per-point value) to earn enough rewards to offset this minor fee.

How the Amex Everyday Preferred credit card compares to other rewards cards

Unless you’re considering a co-branded American Express card or one of its other premium cards , the Amex Everyday Preferred credit card delivers the best Membership Rewards rates for day-to-day expenses.

But in terms of reward flexibility, you might get more from cash back . The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express might be a better choice in this case. It earns a chart-topping 6 percent cash back at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year, then 1 percent back) and on select U.S. streaming services, plus 3 percent on transit and U.S. gas station purchases.

However, the $95 annual fee travel rewards card space is filled with competitive options if you’re in the market for one to earn rewards on everyday purchases. The Citi Premier® Card rewards categories have made it a standout choice, but the travel benefits are a bit bare-bones. It’s also hard to go wrong with a flat-rate card like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card that earns 2 miles on every purchase.

Best cards to pair with the Amex Everyday Preferred credit card

Naturally, American Express cards that can pool points you earn from categories outside U.S. supermarkets and gas stations make the best partners to the Everyday Preferred.

For example, the American Express® Green Card complements the Everyday Preferred by filling in reward gaps on other popular expenses with its 3X points on eligible purchases at restaurants and on transit and travel. When you redeem your rewards for future travel, the Green card also offers a few extra perks like trip delay insurance and other airport-centric annual credits.

All information about the American Express® Green Card from American Express has been collected independently by Bankrate.com and has not been reviewed or approved by the issuer.

Bankrate’s Take: Is the Amex Everyday Preferred credit card worth it?

The Amex Everyday Preferred credit card is a great source of Membership Rewards points if two of your big-budget categories are U.S. supermarket and U.S. gas station purchases. What makes this card a thought-provoking contender is its 50 percent extra points feature if you make more than 30 separate purchases each billing period.

But considering its $6,000 spend cap on 3X U.S. supermarket purchases (then 1X points), 2.7 percent foreign transaction fee and reduced point value for anything outside travel, those searching for rewards flexibility might be better off going another direction. There are plenty of true rewards cards built for travel at the same price tag, and the Blue Cash Preferred card could be a better source of rewards if you spend more time at home.

What’s covered by credit card travel accident and emergency evacuation insurance?

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Editor’s note: This post has been updated with new information and offers.

Many perks available from your credit cards are well-known and well-utilized. However, benefits such as trip cancellation insurance ,  delayed baggage insurance , lost baggage insurance , and  trip delay protection can quite literally save the day and justify paying an annual fee.

Today, we’ll explain a couple of lesser-known benefits that you hopefully won’t have to use but, if needed, can protect you from extreme financial hardship and ensure your family and loved ones are provided for if something happens to you. You can easily find the coverage and terms of any protection your credit card offers by doing a quick web search for the card’s updated benefits guide.

Travel accident insurance

Often called  common carrier insurance , this is a policy that pays in case of death, losing eyesight or losing a limb(s) while on a plane, train, ship or bus licensed to carry passengers and available to the public. A few cards also have travel accident insurance that offers protection for the entire duration of a trip (up to 31 days long) but pays out less than the common carrier insurance policies. To be eligible, you typically have to pay for the entire fare with the credit card.

Different credit cards have different payment tables for how much your beneficiary would receive in case of death, losing one limb, losing two limbs, losing sight in one eye or becoming legally blind. Coverage is also typically extended to authorized users on the account, spouses, domestic partners, and dependent children of the cardholder on trips paid for with the card.

By default, the beneficiaries in order of precedence are spouse, then children, then estate. You can submit a letter to the card issuer to establish another beneficiary.

Emergency evacuation insurance

In the past, when traveling to remote destinations like the Maldives  and Fiji, I bought  third-party emergency medical evacuation insurance , not realizing the cards I already had would have covered me. There are a few crucial aspects of emergency evacuation insurance offered by credit cards that you need to understand and follow so you don’t compound your medical situation with the stress of financial hardship:

  • Everything must be approved and coordinated through a benefits administrator. This is who you or your companions should call when things first start looking like you’ll need assistance. Nothing that you decide to pay for on your own will be reimbursed.
  • Evacuation does not mean repatriation. You won’t be evacuated back to the U.S. if you’re far overseas. Most policies state you’ll be moved to the nearest medical facility capable of proper care.
  • Preexisting conditions may lead to your request for evacuation at the credit card provider’s expense being denied. Read your credit card’s full terms and benefits guide to see which exclude these conditions and the credit card’s definition of a pre-existing condition.
  • The coverage is only for the cost of evacuation and medical care during transportation. You still need medical insurance to pay the doctors and staff who provide you care once you’re back on the ground.
  • Some cards have country exclusions, so don’t expect to head into Syria or Afghanistan and rely on your credit card benefits administrator to get you to a hospital.

To get all the relevant information, make sure you download and read the entire section of the benefits guide pertaining to these coverages. Here are a few cards offering travel accident and/or emergency evacuation insurance.

The Platinum Card® from American Express

The Amex Platinum card removed travel accident insurance in 2020. However, the card still offers one of the most generous emergency evacuation insurance of any card. There’s no cost cap and benefits are extended to immediate family and children under 23 (or under 26 if enrolled full-time in school). Best of all, you don’t even have to use the card to pay for the trip.

You must be on a trip less than 90 days in length and at least 100 miles away from your residence. A Premium Global Assist (PGA) administrator must coordinate everything to not incur any cost. The benefit will also pay economy airfare for a minor under 16 to be returned home if left unattended, pay for an escort to accompany that minor if required to get them home, and get a family member to the place of treatment if hospitalization of more than 10 consecutive days is expected.*

Other American Express cards offer access to the Premium Global Assist Hotline. However, anything they coordinate will be at your expense. Make sure you read your Amex card’s benefits guide carefully.

For more details, see our full review of the Amex Platinum .

*Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Terms, conditions and limitations apply. Visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for details. If approved and coordinated by Premium Global Assist Hotline, emergency medical transportation assistance may be provided at no cost. In any other circumstance, cardmembers are responsible for the costs charged by third-party service providers.

Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Cards

The Chase Sapphire Reserve offers two different travel accident insurance benefits : common carrier travel accident insurance and 24-hour travel accident insurance. The former applies while riding as a passenger in, entering or exiting any common carrier. The latter applies any time during your trip — but you cannot be paid out on both the common carrier and 24-hour policies.

If you use your Chase Ultimate Rewards points  to book your trip, you are covered under the card’s benefits.

People eligible for coverage include “you, your spouse, your spouse’s or domestic partner’s children, including adopted children or stepchildren; legal guardians or wards; siblings or siblings-in-law; parents or parents-in-law; grandparents or grandchildren; aunts or uncles; nieces or nephews.” Chase pays up to $1,000,000 for a common carrier loss and up to $100,000 for a 24-hour policy loss based on the following table:

Some interesting exclusions with Chase that would prevent a payout include the insured person participating in a motorized vehicular race or speed contest, the insured person participating in any professional sporting activity for which they received a salary or prize money or if the insured person traveling or flying on any aircraft engaged in flight on a rocket-propelled or rocket-launched aircraft.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve also offers emergency evacuation insurance. If at least a portion of your or an immediate family member’s trip was paid for with the card, you’re eligible for up to $100,000 in emergency medical evacuation. Your covered trip must be between five and 60 days and be at least 100 miles from your residence. If you are hospitalized for more than eight days, the benefits administrator can arrange for a relative or friend to fly round-trip in economy class to your location. You can also be reimbursed for the cost of an economy ticket home if your original ticket cannot be used. In a worst-case situation, the benefit also pays up to $1,000 to repatriate your remains.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card offers the same travel accident insurance as the Reserve, except with lower payouts on the common carrier policy. The benefits pay up to $500,000 for a common carrier loss and up to $100,000 for a 24-hour policy loss based on the following table:

Bottom line

We hope none of us perfectly ever have to worry about either of these policies, but it’s nice to have peace of mind if you or your family need emergency assistance. This reassurance is just one more reason to ensure one of these cards is always in your wallet when traveling. The benefit guides of all cards are updated regularly, so make sure you don’t toss them in the trash when updates show up in the mail and read the online guides for the latest terms and conditions.

First, let’s look at the overall earning and redemption features of the Amex Gold card, then jump right into the list of travel insurance benefits you can expect to find on the card.

Amex Gold Card — Travel Insurance Benefits

Woman loading bag in car trunk

While the Amex Gold card doesn’t come with a long list of comprehensive travel benefits, you’ll find these core travel insurance benefits useful for saving money and for access to assistance should something go wrong during your journey.

Having car rental insurance can save you money and provide a level of peace of mind when renting a vehicle . The Amex Gold card comes with secondary car rental insurance that would require you to first file a claim with any other applicable insurance before card coverage kicks in.

Secondary coverage can still be valuable coverage, but there is another car rental coverage option included on the card that is a much better choice.

Premium Protection

The option to purchase Premium Protection car rental insurance on the Amex Gold card is a game changer.

You’ll pay one low price of $12.25 to $24.95 for the entire period, up to 42 total days, for primary theft and damage coverage. The actual rate will depend on your state of residence and the level of coverage chosen. Note that this is not a per-day rate like the car rental agencies charge.

Just enroll in the coverage via your online card account, then whenever you charge your rental car to your card, you’ll have the coverage automatically. You are not charged prior to renting a car.

There is no deductible. Accidental death/dismemberment coverage is included. Liability coverage, uninsured/under-insured motorist coverage, or disability coverage is not included.

Cardholders and authorized listed drivers are covered.

Applicable coverages for both secondary and Premium Protection include rental car damage, theft, and loss of use.

Coverage is not available when renting vehicles in Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, and New Zealand.

There are several additional exclusions, including the theft of an unlocked vehicle, illegal activity, intoxication of the driver, and war. Access the Guide to Benefits for a complete list of exclusions, terms, and conditions.

Filing a Claim

You can file a claim online or call 800-338-1670. You must file the claim within 30 days of the event and submit the required claim form within an additional 15 days. You’ll then have 60 days to submit the required documentation.

Bottom Line: The Amex Gold card comes with secondary car rental insurance with the option to purchase primary Premium Protection for one low rate that covers the entire rental period.

United flight delay

To be eligible for trip delay insurance, you must pay for your entire trip with your Amex Gold card, associated rewards, or a combination of the 2. Using airline vouchers, certificates, or discounts, such as those associated with your frequent flyer account, in combination with your card, are also acceptable. Eligible travelers include family members, travel companions, and a spouse or domestic partner.

Trip delay insurance reimburses an eligible traveler for incidental expenses incurred after a 12-hour or greater trip delay. Eligible expenses can include lodging, meals, toiletries, medication, and necessary personal items.

Eligible Losses and Coverage Limits

The following types of losses are eligible covered losses :

  • Inclement weather preventing a traveler from beginning a trip or continuing on a trip
  • Terrorism or hijacking
  • A common carrier’s equipment failure (documented)
  • Lost/stolen travel documents, such as passports

You could receive up to $300 per trip with a limit of 2 claims per card, per 12-month period. Coverage is secondary to any other applicable coverage including reimbursement by the airline.

Loss exclusions include prepaid expenses, losses that were known to the public or the traveler prior to the trip, and intentional acts by the covered traveler. Access the card’s  Guide to Benefits for more details on loss exclusions under trip delay coverage.

You’ll have 60 days from the date of the loss to file a claim. You can do so by calling 844-933-0648 or the number on the back of your card to be directed to the claims department.

You’ll then have 180 days to submit the required documentation, which can include a statement from the common carrier validating the delay, receipts, your card statement showing the trip charge, and other requested supporting information.

Bottom Line: The Amex Gold card comes with trip delay insurance that provides up to $300 per trip for eligible expenses incurred after a 12-hour or greater delay due to a covered loss.

Airport baggage claim

To be eligible for baggage insurance, pay for your common carrier ticket entirely with your Amex Gold card and/or associated rewards. Trips paid for, in full or in part, with non-American Express rewards such as airline loyalty programs are not eligible.

You, your spouse or domestic partner, children under 23, and certain dependent handicapped children are covered for baggage insurance as long as the trip is paid for in full with your card and/or associated rewards.

Lost, damaged, or stolen baggage is covered, except in the event of war, government confiscation, or acts arising out of customer actions, for the following coverage limits.

High-risk items such as jewelry, gold, silver, platinum, electronics, furs, and sporting equipment, are limited to $250 per item maximum, per trip.

Certain items are not covered under baggage insurance — here is a condensed list of those items:

  • Credit cards, cash, securities, or money equivalents (such as money orders or gift cards)
  • Travel documents, tickets, passports, or visas
  • Plants, animals, or food
  • Glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, prosthetic devices, and prescription or non-prescription drugs
  • Property shipped prior to departure

You’ll have 30 days from the date of the loss to file a claim. To file a claim, you can go online or call 800-228-6855 within the U.S. To call from outside of the U.S., call 303-273-6498 collect.

You’ll then have 60 days to submit supporting documentation including a list of items lost, receipts, a statement showing the trip was purchased with the card or associated rewards, and common carrier reports.

Please note that we have abbreviated coverage descriptions and all terms and conditions are not spelled out in their entirety. You’ll want to access the benefits guide for full information.

Bottom Line: You and certain family members are covered for baggage insurance of up to $1,250 per person when traveling with a common carrier. You’ll need to pay for your entire trip with your card or rewards associated with your card for coverage to be valid.

Travel accident insurance that comes with the Amex Gold card pays a benefit in the unlikely event of accidental death or dismemberment of the primary card member, additional card member, spouse or domestic partner, or children under the age of 23.

The trip must be paid for with the Amex Gold card and/or associated Membership Rewards points (Pay With Points).

The coverage pays a benefit for death or severe injury suffered as a result of riding in, boarding, exiting from, or being struck by a common carrier.

The benefit paid is based on a table provided and can be up to $100,000.

Travel Benefits

While not travel insurance specifically, these additional benefits can provide assistance when planning a trip or if an unexpected event should disrupt your trip.

The Amex Global Assist Hotline provides important 24/7 assistance when traveling more than 100 miles from home. Receive help finding medical, legal, and translation referrals as well as assistance securing emergency transportation.

In addition, you could receive help securing a replacement passport or finding missing luggage.

You can reach the Global Assist Hotline at 800-333-2639. Outside the U.S., call 715-343-7977.

Actual services provided by third parties that incur costs are the responsibility of the cardholder.

Services are also not available in areas such as Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, or the Crimea region.

You’ll want to include the Amex Gold card during your next trip, as the card does not charge foreign transaction fees ( rates & fees ).

Receive help planning your trip with Insider Fares via AmexTravel.com, upgrade your flights with points , American Express Travel Insurance , onsite benefits at The Hotel Collection , Amex Offers , and more.

While the Amex Gold card comes with several valuable travel insurance benefits, you would not select the card for this specific reason. The card shines when it comes to earning on select everyday purchases, for purchasing airline tickets, and its flexible travel redemption options. Those should be key reasons for selecting the card.

The fact that there are travel insurance benefits that come complimentary with the card is just one more reason to consider the card.

If having premium travel insurance benefits is a priority for you, you might consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card , The Platinum Card ® from American Express , the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® , or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , all of which offer some of the best travel insurance benefits.

You can read about more credit cards with travel insurance  in our article on this specific topic.
