To prepare for Anne’s quest, the Plantars visit the town archives and accidentally get trapped. [2]

Anne, Sprig , Polly , and Hop Pop find themselves headed towards the Historic Wartwood Town Archives . Hop Pop explains that the ice caps surrounding the valley will soon melt, allowing them to pass through and look for a way to get Anne home. The kids are all annoyed that they have to go to the library to read but Anne is eventually won over upon realizing that jumping into adventure has done nothing for her while Sprig thinks that reading is dumb and that they need true experience. They get to the archives and learn that it was once the home of Mycroft Newtback , a newt who died trying to travel beyond the Valley, and it was converted into an archive after his death. The entrance is powered by a glass piece that keeps the door open while the sun is out. Once the sun sets, the door is locked until the next morning. Anne, Hop Pop, and Polly all go to read the books that interest them while Sprig gets an idea.

As everyone gets up to take a lunch break, Anne, Hop Pop, and Polly discover that the door is closed and the glass is missing. Sprig reveals he took out the piece and once again attempts to get them to jump into adventure, but they angrily demand he put it back. However, Sprig had dropped the glass and accidentally steps on and breaks it. When Anne and Polly get upset, Hop Pop tells them they just need to wait for someone to visit the archives and open the door for them. However, the log reveals the last person to visit the archives before them was there three years ago. After trying numerous things to get the door open, Anne realizes that the light used to open it is coming from a skylight, and they could use it to escape. They create a tower of books and Anne pokes her head through the top where she spots Bessie and the road. Bessie ends up chasing a butterfly and Anne gets stuck in the small hole. Giant cicadas arrive to graze, putting Anne in danger as they start eating her hair, mistaking it for a bush.

Sprig suddenly remembers that the archives used to be a home and the Plantars locate where the bathrooms used to be. Sprig swims in through the pipes and comes out of Felicia's Tea Shoppe where he rushes back and rescues Anne in time. The rest of the family follows and Anne explains to Sprig that she was not looking for adventure and needs to find a way home, even if it means doing something they don't like. Sprig apologizes, but upon hugging her, they both break the skylight and fall through the ground; landing on the books that they piled up to begin with.

To prepare for Anne's quest, the Plantars visit the town archives and accidentally get trapped.

This episode has examples of:

  • Ash Face : Anne and the Plantars receives this after getting singed by the flames set off from Hop Pop's reading glasses, with Hop Pop humorously coughing a puff of smoke.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies : The cicadas, although unlike most giant animals in Amphibia, they're herbivorous. That doesn't stop them from trying to eat Anne's hair, though.
  • Chasing a Butterfly : When Anne tells Bessie to go and get some help, the snail crawls after a small butterfly instead.
  • Eye Scream : Anne reads a book on Plants That Can Eat You and sees a picture of a plant clamping down on a frog's eyeball.
  • Go, Ye Heroes, Go and Die : Sprig attempts to deliver a Rousing Speech to get the panicking family in line to find a way out, but it falls flat when Sprig points out that if they can't find a way out, all that will be found is their dehydrated mummified carcasses clawing at the door.
  • Help, I'm Stuck! : Anne gets stuck trying to escape through the skylight.
  • Leeroy Jenkins : Sprig doesn't believe in research, feeling that the best approach is to jump in blindly.
  • Locked in a Room : Sprig sabotages the door so they get locked inside and they have to find a way out, to show that they don't need to do boring research.
  • Noodle Incident : There is a brief flashback to a series of "adventures" Sprig and Anne had together, which included encountering a fire-breathing mole, rolling down a hill on Bessie's back, and getting sprayed by a giant Smelly Skunk . We don't get more context for them.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business : Usually Anne is all for going along with Sprig and having even less of an attention span, but here she seriously wants to research and meticulously plan leaving the Valley. This is because she is very worried that she might mess up her only chance to get back home and in order to give herself the best chance she will do things she normally doesn't like, like spending an entire day reading books.
  • Shout-Out : To ZooBooks . Anne cheers and shouts, "Zoobooks and manga, here I come!"
  • Solar-Powered Magnifying Glass : Hop Pop tries to replace the lens of the sunlight-operated door with his reading glasses, but all that does is set the place on fire.
  • Timmy in a Well : Anne tries to get Bessie to go for help, but she chases after a butterfly instead.
  • Toilet Teleportation :Sprig ultimately escapes from the archives by swimming through a pipe and crawling out the toilet in the ladies restroom of Felicia's Tea Shoppe.
  • What the Hell, Hero? : Anne calling out Sprig for causing the entire mess in the first place, especially since she needs all the help she can get if she ever wants to go home.

Archives and Archivists in Pop Culture

Archives on TV: Amphibia, "Trip to the Archives"

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

I'm not the first archivist to tackle this episode of Disney's Amphibia , see Wading Through the Cultural Stacks . I held off because I have a long list of other properties to work through and it's important to me that the discussion of archives and pop culture isn't just this website. I don't want to tread over another archivist's analysis if I have nothing to add, but I also love animation and it was inevitable that I'd watch this episode. Let's see if I have anything else to say beyond what's already been said!

amphibia trip to the archives

Briefly, Amphibia is about the adventures of Anne Boochuy on a quest to return home after being transported to a swampy world of anthropomorphized amphibians and others creatures. She's joined in her quest by Sprig Plantar, a young frog, his sister Polly, and their grandfather Hop Pop.

During the eponymous episode, Anne and company visit the town archives in order to find information that might help them in their forthcoming journey across the deadly wastelands. Sprig is the most vehemently against searching through dusty, old books about other peoples' adventures, but Anne is willing to do just about anything if it helps her to get home. Even research because boring, amirite? God forbid you had to prepare for a harrowing and potentially deadly journey by having some knowledge of the dangers ahead. The archives itself is a ways out of town - like a long ways - and is below ground (basically a basement) with access limited by the hours of daylight bouncing off a steampunk-esque crystal timer.

amphibia trip to the archives

I like the design of the archives and I do appreciate that, while it's predominantly filled with books, there are records and artifacts included. That doesn't stop the characters from equating the archives to a library. In fact, when Sprig laments that they're headed to the archives, Anne comments that they're like the libraries from her world. Anne, hun, you also have archives in your world. I guarantee it. It's rightly pointed out in Burkley Herman's article (see above) that the town archives is neither archives nor library, but a repository, which is just a fancier way of saying storage. The characters treat the place like a library, but there's little rhyme or reason to the arrangement of the materials beyond what's needed at that moment in the story.

The archives itself was fashioned from the collections and former home of Mycroft Newtback, who met an unfortunate end when he left home and traveled out to the deadly wastelands, which adds some extra motivation for the group to find some helpful information. Unfortunately, there's no archivist present and, according to the log, its been three years since the last visit, so when the group gets trapped in the archives (like ya do), there's plenty of incentive to escape as quickly as possible.

amphibia trip to the archives

Don't get me wrong, I actually like this episode and I like the show as a whole. The animation is beautiful, the characters are funny and well written, and the coming-of-age story along with the found family trope is engaging to watch. It's unfortunate that a popular show like this doesn't make a little extra effort to actually depict an archivist or verbally express the differences between libraries and archives when they have every opportunity to do so. But, I get it, if there's an archivist then someone would actually know how to get out of the archives when Sprig traps them inside. They'd probably know what materials would be useful to getting out as well that wouldn't result in rampant destruction and setting FIRE to the books! Jeez, Hop Pop, you had one job !

amphibia trip to the archives

I will say this as a bit of a silver lining: the archives, in the end, does provide all of the tools and knowledge they need to rescue themselves. Whether it's getting the architectural plans to the former home turned repository or just piling books and furniture to make the flimsiest of support structures, they definitely find it in the archives and utilize their findings the best they can. It just might have gone better, and faster, if they'd had access to a finding aid...from an archivist.

Come to think of it, does anything ever get added to the archives? If the door is on a crystal timer and the last visitor was three years ago, does that mean the town's history has been stagnant this entire time? Do the residents of Wartwood not create records or write books or leave a paper trail at all in the course of their lives? Who organized the archives to begin with? Someone had to redesign the place after Newtback kicked the bucket? Gasp! What if there's a secret archivist and they haven't returned in three years and they're in need of rescue?! Won't someone rescue the secret archivist?!

No, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. Everything's fine.

One fun fact of note! There's a Gravity Falls easter egg hidden in this episode! Try to find it or look it up online. Either way, enjoy yourself!

  • Hop Pop: "We'll never get Anne home if we get bitten to death by a venomous snake fly! Or eaten to death by a camouflaged sod skink! Or crushed to death by a sand liger!" Anne: "Okay, okay, okay! Enough death already. Sheesh, I'm beginning to think you guys are obsessed."
  • Sprig: "Wait! Wouldn't we better off preparing by diving headfirst into deadly situations?" Anne: "Huh, yeah. Maybe Sprig's right Hop Pop. Research is overrated." Hop Pop: "Overrated, eh? How's diving into adventure been working out so far?" Flashback: Anne and Sprig are attacked by a fire-breathing star-nosed mole; Anne, Sprig, Polly and Bessie tumbling down a mountain mud slide; everyone tied up and getting sprayed by a giant skunk. None of these things happened in prior episodes, so there must have been ridiculous wacky adventures the Plantars have been involved in that we haven't even seen.
  • Why do the archives lock when the sun goes down? Why is there a sun-powered mechanism to enforce this? Anne said it best, "That is some steampunky nonsense right there!"
  • The founder of the archives is Mycroft Newtback, the archives are his former home, and he died violently by attempting to travel beyond the valley.
  • Books in the archives: "Only Nature Facts," "Older Than The Old Ways" (two volumes), "Plants That Eat You" (any of the Plantars could have written a chapter in that), "Snakes That Eat You" (that's happened to Sprig), "Daggers And Where To Put Them," "Layouts" (of the archives).
  • "I'm actually glad you suggested this Hop Pop. I'm learning a ton about your terrifying world!"
  • It's Sprig's turn to wear the Stupid Hat this time, removing the lens from the lock to cause the others to have to have an adventure to open the door. Anne: "Dude, have you lost your frog marbles?"
  • There follows an increasingly dangerous series of attempts to escape that end up with Anne stuck in the skylight and the Plantars swimming out through the bathroom plumbing. Good job Sprig!
  • Anne: "Sprig? How did you get out?" Sprig: "I don't wanna talk about it." Then, Polly: "We couldn't wait, so we took the pipes too!" Hop Pop: "I SEEN THINGS."
  • Predators of the episode, mentioned: Venomous snake fly, camouflaged sod skink, sand liger, tiger viper. Seen in flashback: fire-breathing star-nosed mole. The giant skunk is not trying to eat them, and it's possible the mole isn't either, but I'm giving it the detriment of the doubt. However, the giant cicadas are just mistaking Anne's hair for their plant-based food, so any danger is not from them trying to eat anyone we know.

Amphibia Season 1 Episode 26

Ep 26. Trip to the Archives

  • July 8, 2019

In the season one finale of Amphibia, titled "Trip to the Archives", Anne, Sprig, and Polly set out on a mission to find the final music box. The Music Box is needed in order to restore the power in the calamity box. For context, the calamity box is a magical device that transported Anne and the Plantars to Amphibia. The music box is one of three missing pieces needed to restore the power in the calamity box, which is essential for a safe trip back to their world.

The trio seeks the help of Felicia Sundew, a wise and skilled archivist. Felicia is the keeper of the archives, a place where all the history of Amphibia is stored. Upon reaching the archives, Felicia gives them a tour of the archives and explains how it all works. The archives are full of various folders, books, and drawers with different markings to categorize the contents within.

While going through the archives, Anne finds a page torn from a book with a cryptic poem. At first, Anne dismisses it, thinking it is just a random piece of paper. However, the group soon realizes that the poem is a riddle that can lead them to the music box. They then embark on a scavenger hunt throughout the archives, using the clues from the poem to decode the riddle and find the next piece of the puzzle.

Throughout their scavenger hunt, the group encounters various obstacles and challenges, including avoiding traps and dodging unwanted visitors. They also come across a mysterious figure, who reveals herself to be General Yunan. General Yunan is a loyal soldier of King Andrias and has been searching for the same music box for years. Anne and her friends have to think on their feet to avoid getting caught by Yunan while still trying to solve the riddle.

As they progress through the archives, the clues get harder and harder to decipher. Anne notices that the last clue is missing and that they won't be able to complete the scavenger hunt without it. This leads to a race against time as Anne and her friends try to find the last piece of the puzzle before Yunan does. With the help of their friends, they eventually find the last clue and complete the scavenger hunt to unlock the music box.

Once they had the music box, Felicia Sundew informs the trio that the Wartwood family might not be safe from the king. She tells them that they need to keep the box safe and that they can't let the king know that they have it. Felicia Sundew also tells the trio that they have a long journey ahead of them.

In the end, Anne and her friends successfully retrieve the music box and are one step closer to returning home. However, their adventures are far from over, and they have many challenges ahead to overcome. "Trip to the Archives" is a thrilling season finale, filled with suspense, action, and adventure, leaving viewers eagerly waiting for season two.

Total War Warhammer 3 screengrab.

When even Warhammer nerds leave the battlefield, isn’t it time the anti-woke mob laid down their arms?

Jasper Jackson

If all but the most diehard gamers want to embrace female characters and inclusivity, the rest of the world should take note

Y ou can’t get much nerdier than Warhammer. Forget video games or sci-fi TV shows: a pastime that involves collecting and painting small plastic models, moving them around pretending they are trying to kill each other, and then rolling dice to find out how well they’ve killed each other, is about as nerdy as it gets. Take it from someone who spends a fair share of their weekends doing just that.

Warhammer in some variety has been around for just over 40 years, but has grown increasingly popular throughout my lifetime. The Nottingham-based company that makes it – Games Workshop – is worth more than £3bn and hailed as one of the UK’s biggest business success stories, exporting its figurines and boards round the world. It has spawned dozens of spinoff video games, and Superman star Henry Cavill – an avowed fan – has even signed up to produce and star in a Warhammer TV show on Amazon Prime.

But in recent weeks the sprawling Warhammer fandom has been enveloped in a dramatic controversy – or at least you would think so, from some news headlines.

“It’s Wokehammer! Games Workshop engulfed in gender row with fans after it said Warhammer squadron that was previously thought of as men-only has ‘always had females’,” screamed one MailOnline headline. What had prompted these claims of outrage was Games Workshop introducing a new female character into one of its science fantasy games, Warhammer 40,000. The character in question was part of a group of genetically engineered warriors called Custodes, which had, so far, not had any women models in it – but, according to Games Workshop, had always been included in the weighty narrative “lore” of the game.

The Mail had seen a number of tweets complaining about it, such as one from a games designer saying that Games Workshop was “‘gender flipping’ characters for ‘woke points’”. This was portrayed as a widespread backlash from fans. But, as a fan who frequently browses message boards for tips on playing and painting, or to look at interesting bits of background dug up by people who have bothered to read the many books published about the various Warhammer universes, my experience has been quite different.

If you actually look at the online spaces where fans of the games discuss the hobby they love, most don’t seem very bothered. On the large Reddit forums dedicated to Warhammer games, most of the posts concerning female Custodes seem to consist of fan art, complaints about those complaining or pleas to stop moaning about the insertion of female characters and start moaning about the unfair new rules, which they believe make it harder to win games (something pretty much all players complain about after the regular rules updates). Nerdy gamers are far less reactionary than some in the media would like to depict us.

To some extent, progressive changes in the gaming world are inevitable. Games Workshop has been introducing more female roles for years, as well as toning down some of the more over-sexualised characters. At the same time, the wider gaming industry is also becoming less male-dominated. These days, close to half the world’s video game players are women, and the gaming companies are increasingly aware that female characters are both accepted by male players and a potential draw for female ones. Grand Theft Auto 6, the forthcoming sequel in what is probably the biggest video game series, will feature a woman protagonist for the first time for years.

This isn’t to say that the Warhammer changes haven’t upset some fans. There are players who tend to get annoyed at any change to established fictional worlds they care about, even if these are ludicrous imaginary universes where orcs and elves do battle. And of course there are those who have taken offence to perceived “wokification”. Their argument seems to be that by making a change presumably aimed at making more women interested in the hobby, the makers of the game are bowing to a “woke agenda” and spoiling all the fun for men.

But where once those getting angry about changes bringing greater inclusivity might have been the overwhelming majority, this time they seem at best a vocal minority. That this is the mood on Reddit is even more surprising, given that the social network was once one of the primary breeding grounds for Gamergate, the toxic online movement of 2014-15 that spewed hate towards women with the temerity to create, play, enjoy and critique video games.

In the decade since Gamergate, Reddit has been blamed for the rise of Donald Trump and the “alt-right”, which is perhaps a little overblown but also not entirely without merit. The tactics and talking points employed by both the online right and many politicians have grown out from the bedrooms of those angry that women are spoiling the spaces they thought were theirs alone. The same childish hatred of “wokification” can still be seen in every other post from X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk.

But it looks like even those online spaces once dominated by people who hated change, and who wanted the culture they consumed to reflect less-progressive times, no longer have the loudest voices.

It’s a lesson that politicians might want to pay attention to. The culture wars were pioneered in online spaces filled with nerds. But the nerds seem to be moving on. Even in the world of Warhammer, one of the geekiest and most traditionally male corners of gaming, those getting angry about greater inclusivity are losing.
