Herradura Express

herradura tequila jalisco tour

Herradura Tequila Tour - Excellent

We had some friends come down for a short trip, so we thought we would all take a trip over to Tequila and take a tour of a tequila factory. We hired our favorite drive, Luis, to take us over and we made a day of it. The highlight of the day was the Herradura distillery, wow, what a really neat place. This is a working distillery, which is also part of the original distillery dating back to the late 1800's. Big hacienda, oven building housing the multitude of ovens, stainless steel piping to the distillation vessels, a real mixture of old world and modern technology. They also have a small area where you can see some of the original equipment they used to make tequila. And of course, the tequila tasting in the courtyard with the rest of the tour group was a lot of fun. If you're in Guadalajara, or down Lakeside at Chapala and you have an extra day available, then I strongly suggest the trip. It's very worthwhile. There are a lot of other distilleries, but this one is really well done and highly recommended.

herradura tequila jalisco tour

We visited the hacienda in July and had a great time. The guide was very good and shared a lot of interesting information about the place, the past and the processing of tequilla. He spoke fluently English as well as Spanish-we were a mixed group. It is impressive to see the process from the algaves to the tequila in the bottle. The cost was 100 Pesos/person which includes tasting of the 4 different tequilas. If you wanted to taste some of the more expensive tequilas, the anejos- the cost is 200 or 300 Pesos, depending how much you want to sample.

This is La Hacienda San Jose del Refugio is a wonderful combination of modern and traditional tequila techniques. The original facility is immaculately maintained and the modern part of the plant offers a chance to really see how special this area is. A wonderful experience if you are in the area - even if you were not a tequila fan you will become one after you see the facility.

What made this trip so special was, through friends, we were able to arrange a tour not only of the three generations of tequila factories, but also a private tour of the hacienda and its grounds. If one is to visit Herradura, attempt to get as complete a tour as is available.

Wow! What a place, what a tour! Our guide (Saoul) was absolutely excellent. Interesting, informed, genuinely friendly and happy to be providing the tour. The buildings are magnificent. Even the stone work on the ground is eye-opening. You get to tour the original distillery too with it's antiquated machines. Great for the price (I would have paid more if I had to). All in all a fantastic experience. So good I went back a month later with a different friend.

This is a great name in Tequila and visiting the old Hacienda and its buildings and fields is a learning and pleasant experience.

Mexico, the birthplace of tequila, is home to some of the world’s most renowned tequila distilleries famed for their iconic agave spirit offerings.

These distilleries not only produce the finest tequilas, but many also offer immersive tours that provide a deep dive into the history, production, and tasting of this iconic spirit.

Whilst most of these tequila distilleries are open to the public, some offer private tours, and Patrón, for example, also has a virtual tour for those who prefer to avoid crowds!

Best Tequila Distillery Tours In Mexico

tequila-plantation

From agave fields to tequila barrels, here are the ten best tequila distillery tours in Mexico that are well worth visiting.

1. Casa Herradura in Amatitán

The Casa Herradura tour offers a rather thorough look at its historic tequila distillery located in the heart of Jalisco.

As a visitor, you can explore their expanse of agave fields, get a glimpse of the traditional roasting process (in old brick ovens!), and finally sample some of their finest tequilas.

2. Jose Cuervo in Tequila, Jalisco

Jose Cuervo image

As one of the oldest and most recognised tequila brands globally, the Jose Cuervo distillery tour is a must-visit for tequila lovers, in my opinion.

The tour offers a journey through time, showcasing the brand’s rich tequila history , traditional production methods, and a tasting session of their premium tequilas.

3. Tequila Orendain in Tequila, Jalisco

Established in 1926, Orendain is one of the few remaining family-owned tequila producers.

The tour of their “La Mexicana” factory will take you from field to finished agave spirit and (of course!) a tasting of their award-winning tequilas.

4. Patrón in Atotonilco El Alto

Patron-Tequila

Known for its ultra-premium Patrón tequilas , the Patrón distillery tour is an experience in luxury tequila and is invite-only .

Visitors can explore the hacienda-style facility, learn about the brand’s commitment to sustainability, and indulge in a curated tasting session. There is also a Patrón tequila virtual tour.

The distillery is renowned for its organic tequilas, and visitors can learn about their unique production methods and enjoy a tasting in their beautiful gardens.

A relatively young brand with deep roots in tequila history, Fortaleza offers an authentic tequila experience.

The Fortaleza distillery tour showcases their traditional production methods, from stone milling the agave to distilling in old copper pots.

7. Siete Leguas in Atotonilco El Alto

Named after Pancho Villa’s famous horse, Siete Leguas offers a tour that blends history with tequila production.

You can witness the age-old tahona method of crushing agave hearts and sample their range of artisanal tequilas. Sounds a good deal to me!

9. Tequila Tres Mujeres in Amatitán

Tequila Tres Mujeres image

As the name suggests, this distillery celebrates the vital role of women in tequila production.

The Tequila Tres Murjeres tour offers insights into the brand’s history, its sustainable farming practices, and (not forgetting!) a tasting of their handcrafted tequilas.

8. Casa Maestri in Tequila, Jalisco

The Casa Maestri distillery stands out for its commitment to innovation and is proud to be the world’s most awarded tequila family.

While the tour covers traditional tequila-making methods, it also delves into the brand’s experimental techniques and unique ageing processes.

Don Julio Tequila

Don Julio is one of the pioneers in premium tequila production; their distillery tour is a private tour and a treat for all you tequila connoisseurs.

The private tour covers the brand’s journey from a small family operation to a global powerhouse and includes a tasting of their exquisite tequilas.

Tequila Mexico in Agave Fields

From the bus window star seeing the agave field and if, by the way, the tequila scent would reach my nose, just be patient and the tasting should stray soon.  Get out of the bus hypnotized by the green color, take a walk among the agaves while your guide teaches to distinguish male plants from female ones (females grow a kind of flowers)

Tourists surround the guide, who tries to train your eyes to differentiate between a agave ready to cut and one that lacks maturity another 6 years. When we learned to identify them, he showed us how to get fucked (they cut 150 magueyes a day), and the bravest took the coa and cut the root of the agave until freeing the pineapple.

To continue our tour of the factory they gave us hearing aids, they put us equipment of security and sanity to continue with the route of the tequila Altos. As soon as we entered, the heat began to make their own, we walked through the safety zone and we saw, step by step, how this drink is made.

After they bring the pineapples they are fermented in large boilers for hours (we feel the heat and the strong smell that came from the fermentation), then we go to the cellar where they have the barrels, finally, we observe how they label the bottles and put them in boxes.

We tell you of 3 places where to live the route of the tequila and to cross its factories

To end our experience, we were given a tequila tasting, where they taught our senses to differentiate the types of tequila and to distinguish the flavor of Altos (which has a softer flavor), which is 100% handmade agave, which gives that soft tone, fruity aromas and herbal notes.

The Jose Cuervo Express train offers 2 new itinerary options to travel from Guadalajara to Tequila every Saturday of the year; traveling 60 km of agavero landscape. The experience includes the train trip from Ferromex to Tequila, the tour of the José Cuervo tequila factory and Mexican show.

Prices range from $ 3,888.00 pesos per person (plus taxes). Even for drinks with tequila there are levels, so you must know Hornitos Black Barrel

For lovers of mixology with tequila, we are going to teach you how to prepare a cocktail lord because we are good vibe. It’s called Ginger Barrel.

Before getting into the subject, let’s take a moment to know the essence of this cocktail: Tequila Hornitos Black Barrel!

It is a premium aged 100% agave Tequila, aged for 24 months in American white oak barrels burnt and toasted in the Scottish style. Just to make your mouth water.

It has an amber colorcito with a slightly olive green hue. Its aroma is maple honey, vanilla, chocolate, hazelnut, wood, coconut and a slight smoky touch. When you taste it, you perceive a subtly acidic woody flavor, a little roasted oak and cooked agave. Have we convinced you?

Casa Herradura Express

Organize the tour of the tequila where they take you to know the factory, where they will tell you the history and the process of tequila Herradura. It includes a live jima, the visit to the museum and a tasting.

There are tours every day, and from there you are taken to Hacienda Casa Herradura. You go the factory to know the process of elaboration and finally the tasting.

This tour costs $ 990, if they go from two to three people, and take you to know the Tequila Factory, the ceramic factory (where you can design your bottle and paint it), visit the Tequila Museum, visit the cava store, taste tequilas and a meal of three times.

If this tour does not beat you, you can hire someone else; to do any of its many activities, or to dine in its tavern, which is located 4.5 meters underground – with a menu of five states of the Republic.
