It was pricey at $75 NZD though as I believe that they have experienced high demand with limited capacity. What really annoyed me and why I have marked them down is misleading pricing by one of their agents, Viator. I did some research and noticed that they had the lowest price. It is only when you go through the booking and about to pay that they disclose the price is USD. Yes, I could have stopped at that stage but could not be bothered starting the process with another agent but could not be bothered. Ended up costing $78NZD. We booked this one for 12pm and the Ruakuri cave tour for 1pm which we didn’t know they are NOT located at the same place. Ruakuri is a short 5min drive that if the ticket person wouldn’t squeezed us on the 11:45 tour we probably wouldn’t have made it. Just in case you’re planning doing both don’t book them that close. The only negative thing I think is that it was kind of hard to hear/understand the tour guide as of he was too far ahead of us (we were at the end). Still recommend it and worth seeing. The cave was fine, interesting to hear the info, not the most spectacular cave to walk through but the guide was amazing, so engaging. • Momelco 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Unique and Underwhelming... This was a very unique experience that you can’t see too many other places (NZ and Australia), however, I was a bit underwhelmed which I hate to admit given the high ratings this has received. Our tour guide, Charlie, was personable and knowledgeable. When entering the cave, she communicated that video, photos, etc. are not allowed until they say when at the very end of the boat ride. That was a bit disappointing since it would have been nice to record the historical facts shared during the tour and take a few photos of the information she described. The tour is relatively short - maybe 30ish minutes? The first part is through the caves viewing the stalagmites and stalactites. It includes an overview of Gloworms - how they eat, reproduce, etc. The boat ride was…interesting. “T” led this portion of the tour, where everyone from your tour group gets in one boat and he guides the boat into a completely dark portion of the cave. Our group was completely silent – maybe in awe of beauty. The space within the cave is very small – it’s not a long boat ride. T essentially pulled the boat from one end of the cave by rope, turned the boat around, and went back. We did that a few times before exiting, at which point you can take photos. I definitely think it’s worth visiting due to its uniqueness – just wish we weren’t on such a tight schedule and could record/video/photograph the experience. Read more Written 1 April 2024

Qualmark rating

Aranui Cave is set in the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve, 5 minutes drive from the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. It is named after Ruruku Aranui, the local Maori man who first discovered this previously hidden gem back in 1910. Aranui Cave has a natural cave entrance and is the smallest and most delicate of Waitomo's three main caves. As a dry cave without a river running through it, it houses very little life past its entrance. However, just inside the entrance is a colony of native New Zealand cave weta and further into the cave is the most beautiful collection of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and decorative formations. Aranui Cave is a magical, mystical place that is steeped in Maori myth and legend.
