As demonstrated by NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, this epic work attracted over 9.6 million viewers, earned the highest ratings in its time period, and received the highest critical ranking of any live musical event on network TV. On September 17th, 2021 a variety of special edition Jesus Christ Superstar albums, remastered at Abbey Road, were released. These special anniversary editions are a celebration of the original 1970 double concept album and it’s continued success spanning an incredible 50 years. Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, selling out two consecutive engagements in 2016 and 2017. The production played a West End engagement at the Barbican in 2019 before returning to Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre inconcert version during the summer of 2020.The 2022-2023 North American Tour of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR is produced by Work Light Productions. Jesus Christ Superstar review – a triumphant return for live theatre

Regent’s Park Open Air theatre, London This concert version of Timothy Sheader’s revelatory 2016 production made a virtue of distancing on stage – were there a roof it would have blown off

‘C ould we start again please?” asks Mary Magdalene in the lustrous 1970 rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Theatres have waited months for the same question to be answered since they closed in March amid the coronavirus outbreak. So it’s tempting to sing out your own “hosanna, hey sanna” when a company of performers assemble on stage, two metres apart, and triumphantly rip off their masks at the top of this rainswept open-air revival .

Seating capacity has been reduced by over two-thirds for an interval-free, 90-minute concert-style version of the musical, leaving audiences to luxuriate in extra space, but requiring the strictly socially distanced actors to still convey intimacy on stage. The sense that we’re all in this experiment together is accentuated by Tom Scutt’s design (a reworking of Soutra Gilmour’s Evita set), whose metal tiers mirror the raked auditorium. It serves to draw us into Drew McOnie ’s choreography, whether among Jesus’s massed followers, drawn as if to a blinding sun in the opening, or the jolting mob ordering his climactic crucifixion.

This is not the second but the third coming at Regent’s Park for Timothy Sheader’s revelatory 2016 production , which returned the following year and also had an indoor run at the Barbican and a US tour. The show is back as a last-minute bit of programming after the theatre had already postponed its entire 2020 summer season to next year.

Any elation stirred by its helter-skelter overture, with that ominous guitar lick emanating from a studio-style hut for the band upstage, quickly gives way to frustration. The production grinds to a halt when the heavens open after a couple of songs. But it resumes after a short break with Maimuna Memon, superb as Mary, singing the ballad Everything’s Alright, which soothes out an unusual 5/4 time signature, bathed in light. The anointing scene inescapably demands proximity; in the 2012 arena tour , Melanie C – while in fine voice – calmed Jesus with shoulder massages and temple rubs that suggested the start of a day-spa pamper package. Performed two metres apart tonight, it becomes more a balm for us all amid this year of pandemic turmoil.

Elsewhere, distancing increases the sense of characters’ isolation – as much a theme as the throng mentality – and gives the production a certain starkness. The relentless drive of The Temple, in which Jesus stumbles through a push-and-pull marketplace, spotlights two dancers centre-stage.

As Jesus, Pepe Nufrio conveys a higher calling while grappling with a celebrity status that sees his every word twisted, his fame as worn as the flecked gold crosses etched into the set design. Ricardo Afonso’s raging Judas crucially never overpowers the balance, and Afonso shrinks within himself in horror after the betrayal, which leaves his hands and arms strikingly stained the colour of his pieces of silver. Later, fistfuls of glitter are used for the flagellation.

Most revivals embrace the kitsch extravagances of Jesus Christ Superstar; this one makes sparing but striking use of glitz. There is a superbly measured comic glee in the chorus led by Caiaphas (Ivan de Freitas, his deep voice rumbling up as if from underneath the park itself). Elsewhere, Shaq Taylor wrings much more than you’d expect from King Herod’s Song and, if there was a roof here, Cedric Neal would be raising it with Simon Zealotes. It’s one high point among many, in an evening that revels in the joy of people coming together and the glory of theatrical talent getting back to work.

At Regent’s Park Open Air theatre , London, until 27 September, with performances screened to audiences on the outside lawn until 30 August.

Lockdown theatre review: Jesus Christ Superstar (2012 Arena Tour)

Jesus christ superstar takes to the “rock’n’roll” arena. it isn’t good..

“Why waste your breath moaning at the crowd? Nothing can be done to stop the shouting.” Amidst the deluge of theatrical content emerging online, it can be quite hard to make decisions about what to actually watch. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s release of the 2012 live arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar stood out for me as though I did go and see it at the O2 , we were seated at the back of the cavernous space and so the opportunity to actually see what happened on the actors’ faces was enough to tempt me. Plus it’s Good Friday…

Pre-dating the Open Air Theatre’s revelatory restaging by three years, Laurence Connor’s restaging of ALW’s 1971 rock opera lays its contemporary allusions thickly (Occupy, Guantánamo, reality TV) but right from the start, you can see how superficial it is. A busy prologue full of kinetic energy references the Occupy movement strongly but as soon as the show proper starts, it’s as if it never happens, you could cut it and never know the difference.

And performance-wise, I really don’t think it is one for the ages. Fresh from winning the TV talent show Superstar , Ben Forster is palpably still feeling his way into his talent, not helped by this version capturing arena-style largesse in uncompromising detail. Subtlety is in short supply – Melanie Chisholm’s Mary Magdelene feels mis-cast, and in art as in life, the less said about Chris Moyles the better. Tim Minchin’s unique brand of anguish as Judas does register though, and Alex Hanson is naturally excellent as Pilate. But overall, I don’t think it is a treatment of the musical that stands up to rewatching unless you’re a huge fan.

Rock musical phenomenon ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ is coming to the Sydney stage this year

The award-winning revival of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit will kick off a national Aussie tour in November

Jesus Christ! The messiah will return to rock the Sydney stage when Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber ’s celebrated musical Jesus Christ Superstar arrives in Australia later this year, following huge acclaim and sold-out seasons in London as well as an extensive tour of North America. The Olivier Award-winning reimagined production of this celebrated rock musical will open at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre  in November, where the original Australian production began in 1972, ahead of a national tour.

With an iconic 1970s rock score that was originally released as a concept album, this global musical phenomenon has been wowing audiences for decades. Jesus Christ Superstar opened on Broadway in 1971, and went on to become the longest-running musical in West End history at that time when it transferred to London.

The original Australian production opened at the Capitol in May 1972, followed by seasons at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre and other cities, playing for more than 700 performances. Many people will also remember the iconic sell-out Australian arena tour in 1992, which starred John Farnham, Jon Stevens, Kate Ceberano, Angry Anderson, Russell Morris and John Waters.

Loosely based on the Gospels' accounts of the Passion, Jesus Christ Superstar is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ, as seen through the eyes of Judas. This musical is not so much about preaching the word of the Bible, but it’s more of a subversive interpretation of the psychology of the good book’s characters, with Judas expressing dissatisfaction with the direction in which Jesus is steering his disciples. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, the legendary score includes ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’, ‘Gethsemane’ and ‘Superstar’.

Produced in Australia by John Frost and David Ian for Crossroads Live, in association with Work Light Productions, this new production of Jesus Christ Superstar won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and the 2016 Evening Standard Award for Best Musical, selling out two consecutive engagements in 2016 and 2017. We’re told that auditions for the cast will begin shortly.

Jesus Christ Superstar arrives at Mayflower theatre just in time for Easter

Jesus Christ Superstar has arrived at one of Hampshire's biggest theatres just in time for Easter.

The UK tour is in full swing and is director Timothy Sheader's reimagined take on the impressive musical which won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.

It's safe to say I had high hopes. Jesus Christ Superstar is a powerful musical, exploring the psychology of humanity and success.

The first time saw an amateur production at university. A few years later I forced all my flatmates to watch the recorded production starring John Legend and Sara Bareilles. 

I've been waiting years to watch a professional production on stage and I was thrilled to see it was coming to Hampshire.

Understudy Jack Street took to the stage as Jesus, his quiet, moody take on the superstar elevated his mystery. The whole audience was captivated by 'Gethsemane' where the emotion was desperate and raw.

Hannah Richardson hit every note perfectly as Mary, each performance was dripping with emotion that was simply captivating. 

Jad Habchi was incredible as Caiaphas - every time he returned to the stage we knew we were in for a treat. The deep vocals mixed with the camp choreography was perfect.

While some cast members brought the drama of the music - Ryan O'Donnell as Pilate specifically - it felt like some cast members were too cool for the words they were speaking. 

I found myself asking: Where is the anger? Where is the passion? I wish I had seen it throughout the whole production, rather than glimpses here and there. 

All in all, it is an impressive show to look at - you will not be left disappointed. The set is imposing, with a huge cross overlooking the audience and the lighting was simply stunning. 

Jesus Christ Superstar is at the Mayflower Theatre until Saturday, March 30.

Completing the creative team is design by  Tom Scutt , lighting design by  Lee Curran , sound design by  Nick Lidster  and music supervision by  Tom Deering .

A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for decades, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR's iconic 1970s rock score was originally released as a concept album and opened on Broadway in 1971. The original London production ran for over eight years. By the time it closed after 3,358 performances, it had become the longest-running musical in West End history at that time.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR has been reproduced regularly around the world in the years since its first appearance, including a Broadway revival in 2012, an ITV competition TV show called Superstar that led to casting Ben Forster as Jesus for an arena tour of the show, and a production at the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre celebrating 45 years since the musical's Broadway debut. An Australian arena tour featuring John Farnham , Jon Stevens , Kate Ceberano , Angry Anderson , Russell Morris and John Waters toured Australia in 1992 to sell-out performances.
