Arsenal have confirmed their travelling squad for the preseason tour of America. Mikel Arteta has selected a 29-man group that includes new signings Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice.

While there are plenty of exciting new names in the group, there are several notable absentees. Perhaps the biggest name not to travel is Thomas Partey. football.london understands that Arsenal are expecting the Ghanaian to join up with them in the States next week. Partey has been subject to speculation over his future amid interest from teams in Saudi Arabia and Italy.

Emile Smith Rowe is also absent from the initial group. He is expected to join up next week as well, though. The 22-year-old was part of the England squad that won the Under-21 European Championships just a week ago, but he is set to forgo some of his holiday in order to join up with the Gunners in America .

Nicolas Pepe and Albert Sambi Lokonga are all also absent from the group due to injury. Lokonga also missed the training camp in Germany and subsequent friendly with FC Nurnberg earlier this week due to injury. Cedric also misses out Nuno Tavares is also not included as he takes his holiday after representing Portugal in the Under-21 Euros. None of these four are expected to join the Arsenal squad in America.

Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is absent from the travelling party as he edges closer to a move away from the club. Fellow stopper Matt Turner meanwhile has been representing America at international level and is now on holiday. He could be back for the Emirates Cup match with AS Monaco on August 2nd or the Community Shield on August 6th.

Youngsters Reuell Walters, Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly are not included in the travelling party despite all playing in Nurnberg. Amario Cozier-Duberry is the only academy player to make the trip as Arteta once again goes for an experienced group. It is understood that this was communicated to them prior to the training camp at Adidas HQ. The former trio will now likely travel with the Under-21s for a training camp in Spain.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Rob Holding, Marquinhos and Takehiro Tomiyasu are all included despite missing the Nurnberg friendly with injury . Leandro Trossard also travels despite coming off during that game with what Arteta described as an "issue" .

In a statement on their official website Arsenal confirmed that "the players who are not part of the squad will be working hard on their fitness and/or recovering from injury." This is the reason given for Reiss Nelson's absence.

The Gunners will fly first to Washington where they will take on the MLS All Stars. Following that it's a trip to New Jersey to play Manchester United, before the tour rounds off with a fixture against Barcelona in LA.

Arsenal’s US tour: What I learned – daily table plans, transfer clauses and staff changes

Arsenal’s US tour: What I learned – daily table plans, transfer clauses and staff changes

In the lobby of Arsenal ’s Orlando hotel lodge, there was evidence of footballers at rest: a table tennis table, a pool table, and — plugged into the widescreen television — the ubiquitous PlayStation. Even in their downtime, competition continues.

A tour is a very particular experience for a footballer — the training is intense and the regime relatively strict. There are media commitments and matches. The fans come to party; the players are there to work.

But it’s also an opportunity for the squad to interact with foreign fans and to gel as a group. On a typical day at training during the season, they spend a matter of hours together. After travelling to Germany and then onto America, some of these players have now spent a fortnight in each other’s company.

Arsenal will reflect on a highly successful excursion to the US: three wins, a kit launch, a new signing and a record crowd.

For 10 days, The Athletic ’s Arsenal writer James McNicholas followed the team on their trips to Baltimore and then Orlando. These are his observations and insights from the tour.

The group have bonded

“The tour helps a lot,” Granit Xhaka tells The Athletic . “You are nearly 24-7 together. We are eating breakfast, lunch, dinner, always together, — but not only for us players, but as well for the other people that are here around because we don’t see them normally a lot in the training ground. And it’s good to see who is doing the work, why and who is helping us.”

Xhaka believes the bonds formed on this trip can help propel the team to greater heights next season.

“When we went to Dubai (in January), we had the same people around us as well,” he explains. “And when we came back, we had a lot of good games, a lot of points.”

💬 “We had a great time. Thank you so much for everybody that participated in organising this tour. We’ve tried to make it as enjoyable and as productive as possible.” ❤️ 🎙 @M8Arteta pic.twitter.com/eZAYqkn31c — Arsenal (@Arsenal) July 25, 2022

The players flew out in the comfort of a chartered Emirates plane. Groups naturally formed — a Portuguese-speaking gang of Gabriel Jesus , Marquinhos , Fabio Vieira and Gabriel Martinelli all sat together. Rob Holding told new arrival Matt Turner to sit with some of the English speakers in a set that included Aaron Ramsdale , Ben White and Kieran Tierney .

While squad members are inevitably closer to some players than others, there are no exclusive cliques. Effort is made to ensure everybody socialises — and everybody, even a new boy like Marquinhos, is encouraged to make an effort with English.

“Everyone mixes together,” explains Holding. “We made sure of that with our seating plans for dinners and lunches.

“We’ve mixed it up so each day, two of the players will sort out the table plan. So you’ll get two players, two members of coaching staff, some of the club media staff, and you’re mingling with different people all the time. It means you get to know them personally, their families. It gives you a bit more togetherness.”

Speaking of meals, while Arsenal’s squad were frequently asked which American delicacies they were enjoying — hamburgers, crab cakes or similar — the club actually brought first-team chefs with them to prepare the players’ food. As you might expect, the diet centred around lean meats and greens.

In Orlando, the club put on a special barbecue event where players, football staff and non-football employees were all mixed in together. Afterwards, there was a games night, with first-team personnel competing against Arsenal employees at table tennis and giant beer pong.

What does an “unhappy” player look like?

The Athletic was fortunate enough to watch Arsenal train on a couple of occasions. An observation: players often termed “unhappy” by the media don’t tend to look unhappy with a ball at their feet.

Hector Bellerin, Bernd Leno and Nicolas Pepe looked fully engaged on the training pitch, laughing and joking with their team-mates. Sometimes we can be guilty of assuming that a player who may want to move is a brooding, difficult presence . At Arsenal right now, that does not appear to be the case.

Pitch Problems

When Arsenal arrived in Baltimore, they were originally scheduled to train at UMBC — University of Maryland, Baltimore County. In preparation, they sent a staff member ahead of the tour party to check the standard of the pitches.

Arsenal had concerns the facilities were not up to the requisite standard — and those worries were compounded when a huge storm tore through the area the day before Arsenal’s arrival. Trees were felled, homes damaged, and more than 27,000 people in the vicinity were left without power.

Presumably, it didn’t do much for the state of the pitches either. Arsenal hurriedly arranged an alternative venue for training: the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, a 40-minute drive from Baltimore. This location might be familiar to London football fans: when Simon Jordan launched his ill-fated Crystal Palace Baltimore experiment, their inaugural fixture was played there.

These pitches more than met Arsenal’s standards — as did the excellent facilities at the ChampionsGate complex in Orlando. However, Arsenal would have been wrong to get too comfortable in Florida: when Toronto FC were training on the very same pitches in April 2021, a huge alligator crashed the session by waddling onto the field. The players were spared by a plucky ChampionsGate staffer, who chased the gator away in a golf cart.

The Athletic can confirm that none of Arsenal’s existing injury issues are alligator-related.

Battling boredom

Away from family, friends and the comfort of home, players can occasionally get bored on tour. It’s a fairly regimented period, with their schedule built around demanding training sessions.

In Baltimore, Arsenal resided at the Sagamore Pendry hotel, the luxury resort backed by Under Armour founder Kevin Plank. For the players, the location was ideal — Arsenal had taken over the majority of the hotel, which was located in the city’s attractive inner harbour. They were close to the fans and could soak up some of the atmosphere of the city.

In Orlando, Arsenal stayed at the Omni ChampionsGate resort — a beautiful location, but a little way out of town. Isolated from the other hotel guests in their own private lodge, and with the tour entering its latter stages, the threat of boredom began to creep in — especially when a temporary wi-fi outage robbed the players of the ability to stream movies or play games online.

The aforementioned table tennis and PlayStation — FIFA, of course — made for popular pastimes. Emile Smith Rowe also revealed that, during their initial training camp in Germany, the players went bowling.

The Omni resort is also home to a golf course, which went down well with a few players. There’s even an Arsenal golfing WhatsApp group.

“Yeah, there’s a big golf chat and I’m in it for some reason,” says Holding, who does not play golf and says he’s “never been any good”.

“I don’t know why I’m there,” he says incredulously. “They’re talking about the next day, when they’re going to go and play golf, and I’m just there listening to it all thinking, ‘I’m not involved in this, I don’t even know why I’m in here’.”

Arsenal assistant coach Steve Round is known to be a keen golfer and is highly competitive. There was a driving range players could access. During the tour, Ramsdale and fellow goalkeeper Alex Runarsson enjoyed a round of golf with club staff.

Other players chose less sedate activities: Mohamed Elneny , Reiss Nelson , William Saliba , Eddie Nketiah and Turner were among the players who took up the option of visiting the Universal Studios theme park. They were accompanied by members of staff, as well as World Cup winner Gilberto Silva, who was travelling in tandem with Ray Parlour as a club ambassador.

Unlike the trip to Dubai earlier this year, families were not invited to travel with the squad — but some players did receive brief visits from family and partners who chose to fly out to the tour.

Staff shuffle

At the end of last season, Arsenal announced that head of performance Shad Forsythe would be leaving the club after eight years. The American has subsequently joined Borussia Dortmund .

He has effectively been replaced by Tom Allen, who has been promoted to a new role as head of sports science. The Athletic understands Mikel Arteta is also considering adding an on-pitch conditioning coach to complement Allen.

Allen and the rest of Arteta’s staff put Arsenal through a rigorous training regime. The heat was oppressive in London, too — but it was the humidity that made it so tough on the squad, particularly in Florida. Based on the workout they received in America, they should start the new season very fit indeed.

A new arrival

Oleksandr Zinchenko ’s arrival gave everyone a huge boost. He travelled to America with Manchester City knowing the move to Arsenal was close.

Technical director Edu was a day late arriving in Florida because he was working on the completion of the deal. His initial intent was to fly to Houston, where City were based, and then accompany Zinchenko to Florida. Ultimately, that proved impractical, and Zinchenko made the journey alone. Upon landing, he was greeted by Arsenal media staff before going on to take medical tests at nearby hospital facilities.

Arsenal, Mikel Arteta, Zinchenko

The night before Arsenal’s 4-0 win over Chelsea , Zinchenko underwent the ritual of performing his initiation song. He made the bold choice of an a capella version of “Friday” by Nightcrawlers.

Transfer clauses

Edu spoke at length to The Athletic in Florida about his Arsenal squad-building strategy , and the difficulty the club have had in selling players. Some mitigation arrives with the news that two deals — the sales of Omari Hutchinson and Matteo Guendouzi to Chelsea and Marseille respectively, which both appeared to be for relatively modest fees — include sell-on clauses. If the players thrive with their new clubs and make another move, Arsenal stand to profit.

Big characters

Zinchenko might’ve shown some personality at his initiation but watching the players up close, you become aware that this is a squad which includes several big characters.

Some are unsurprising, such as Xhaka. His influence among the group is obvious.

It’s interesting to think, just a year ago, he was very close to a move to Roma. Even at the start of this summer, there was talk that he might move on. Judging by his behaviour in America, that’s the last thing on his mind: he appears absolutely committed.

It’s clear last season hurt him but he says the time off has allowed him to process the pain.

“During the season you don’t see that a lot because you are in this adrenaline, you’re so focused,” he explains. “But in the holidays you start to see reality: we had something in our hands, and we left it on the side and didn’t take it, and this is painful. It was painful because we were very, very close. In my opinion, it was not the Spurs game or Newcastle game, it was before — the run against Southampton , Brighton , Palace, where we lost three games in a row.

“But this happened, we can’t change anything. I’m not a guy who looks backwards but we have to speak about it, of course. And we can learn from it. We can learn because we are one year older, more experienced as a team as well.”

arsenal tour squad

Xhaka undertook a lot of media duties on this tour — something that would have been unthinkable a few years ago when his relationship with the fans was so fraught. He looks like a man rehabilitated, and enjoying life at Arsenal again.

Some characters, however, are more surprising. Centre-back Gabriel is not a player fans have heard a great from — partly because of a language barrier — but he is an ebullient bundle of energy; a joker among Arsenal’s growing Brazilian pack. During the game against Orlando City, he could be seen coaching the defence from the sidelines. Clearly, it wasn’t just a friendly to him.

While being primarily a squad player, Cedric carries out an important role off the pitch. Of the Portuguese-speaking contingent, he is the eldest — and as an experienced player, and European champion, is held in high regard. He has already taken on a ‘big brother’ role with Vieira. When the former Porto midfielder faced his first English interview with an external outlet , it was Cedric who offered him reassurance and advice beforehand.

Saliba is also a charismatic guy who has slipped seamlessly into the squad. He speaks good English and appeared relaxed around fans and staff. What’s more, in the flesh, he remains absolutely massive.

Injury issues

Perhaps the only negative story coming out of the tour is that there are still a few injury issues hanging over certain players. Vieira is yet to make his debut for the club having sustained a minor fracture injury to his foot while on international duty. He is however back in light training and should be able to rejoin the main group soon.

Takehiro Tomiyasu is also close, with Arteta confident he could return to full training next week. The situation regarding Tierney is, for now, less clear — but at least Arsenal have the reassurance of having signed Zinchenko as an alternative.

It’s not just among the players that Arteta has had injuries to contend with — his trusted assistant, Albert Stuivenberg, spent the entirety of the tour sidelined, wearing a protective boot and on crutches. The Dutchman, like Vieira, Tierney and Tomiyasu, will be itching to get back on the training pitch as soon as possible.

Five goalkeepers is probably too many

Arsenal took five goalkeepers away with them — Ramsdale, Turner, Leno, Arthur Okonkwo and Runarsson. They left a sixth home — Estonian international Karl Hein , who is recovering from a knee injury.

It’s a big group to work with, and not always hugely practical. Most goalkeeper drills are designed around working in groups of three, so Arsenal’s keepers often had to train in two separate groups.

The situation is likely to look clearer soon. Fulham are still hoping to sign Leno, while the idea remains to send Okonkwo on loan once the extent of Hein’s likely lay-off is known.

Swift departure

Both Arsenal and Chelsea flew home straight after their game in Orlando. Arsenal’s players were instructed to take their washbags and passports with them to the game, and board the coach in their black travel gear.

After the match, the players effectively checked in for their chartered flight before even getting on the coach, meaning they could make a quick getaway. After a slight delay, they were airborne, touching down in London on Sunday morning.

There is no rest for these Arsenal players: a behind-closed-doors friendly follows in midweek, before hosting Sevilla in the Emirates Cup on Saturday.

Arsenal XI vs Wolves: Starting lineup, confirmed team news, injury latest for Premier League game today

Arsenal have made three changes to their starting lineup for tonight’s crucial Premier League clash with Wolves .

Jakub Kiwior, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus have all been drafted in from the off by Mikel Arteta for a must-win game in the title race at Molineux, replacing Takehiro Tomiyasu, Jorginho and Gabriel Martinelli following Wednesday’s agonising Champions League quarter-final defeat by Bayern Munich in Germany.

Jurrien Timber is not involved again as he continues his return to full fitness. The Dutch defender has been out of action since the opening Premier League game of the season, when he injured his knee and required surgery.

Timber is progressing well with his recovery and is back in training , but he is not quite ready to play for the first team.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed the plan is for the Dutchman to play for the club’s youth team first.

“He’s gonna play a game with the Under-23s and after that we will see better how he feels,” said Arteta.

“He looks really good in training, but it’s that last big step, we need to see if he’s ready and how it’s going to go.

“He played right-back and left-back in pre-season. In relation to the games and the players that we have available we will decide [where he will play].”

Jorginho and Martinelli both drop to the bench for Arsenal this evening, though Tomiyasu is not involved at all.

Arsenal XI: Raya, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Kiwior, Odegaard, Rice, Havertz, Saka, Jesus, Trossard

Subs: Ramsdale, Zinchenko, Jorginho, Partey, Vieira, Smith Rowe, Nelson, Martinelli, Nketiah

Where to watch Tottenham vs. Arsenal: Premier League live stream, odds, start time, news

Arsenal are in the hunt for the premier league title, while spurs eye a top four finish.

untitled-design-2024-04-26t123552-700.png

The North London derby is always one of the most anticipated fixtures of the Premier League season, in large part because it has become a check-in on two teams eager to disrupt the current cadence of affairs at the top of the table -- Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. It means the latest edition of the rivalry has a fitting place as a high-stakes end-of-season encounter between two teams with lofty ambitions.

Sunday's matchup at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is a must-win for both. Arsenal are trying to keep pace in a three-way title race in an effort to win the Premier League for the first time in 20 years, while Spurs eye their first Champions League berth in two years. Both targets are ambitious but also spotlight the differences between the rivals, one that's arguably more reflective of where each team is than the 2-2 draw they played to in September .

Take Arsenal, who have enjoyed a near-perfect 2024 and remain in the title race. It comes on the back of a high-scoring season in which they lead the Premier League with 82 goals and rank second for expected goals at 68.56, but have perhaps found most success as a defensively sturdy team. The Gunners have conceded just 26 goals this season, the least of the league, ato the point that they kept Manchester City goalless in league play this season thanks to their ability to absorb the opposition's offensive pressure. It's becoming increasingly clear that Arsenal play with precision on both ends of the pitch when they are at their best, and the good days have very much outnumbered the bad ones.

How to watch and odds

As for Spurs, the hot start that included a draw against their North London rivals gave way for a season full of inconsistency. It is obvious what they want to do stylistically under Ange Postecoglou, who's about to finish his first season in the job. They prefer a high-intensity, attack- first identify and rank second in the league for possession with 61.7%, third for passing accuracy at 87.3% and fourth for touches with 25,000-plus, ahead of Arsenal in each of those categories. It's far from a bad strategy, but the execution has let them down at different times this season. Recent results have ranged from a 4-0 win over Aston Villa to a 4-0 loss to Newcastle United, the latter of which points at Spurs' need to step things up in attack and a less-than-ideal sloppiness in the back. They have not kept a clean sheet in their last five, conceding 10 goals in that time.

Why Arsenal are massive favorites

Despite the layers of intrigue this fixture can bring, the data suggests that the outcome is a foregone conclusion. Arsenal come in as the oddsmakers' favorites and the benefit of fitness. Mikel Arteta should have a full squad to choose from on Sunday, while Postecoglou is likely preparing for lineup tetris. Destiny Udogie's strong first season for Tottenham is over after undergoing surgery for a hamstring injury last week, while important players like Richarlison and Pedro Porro could miss out with their own issues.

Those are not the only differences between Arsenal and Tottenham, though. The odds may be stacked against Spurs at home and the snakes might be high, but Sunday's match does not need to be a defining moment for them as much as it does for the Gunners. Both are playing catch-up in their respective races to the finish line, but for Tottenahm, this game is merely a progress report in year one of a rebuild. There have been glimpses of a good foundation, but a test against a top-tier side will offer some more answers on where the team needs to go from here.

Don't miss CBS Sports Golazo Network's Morning Footy, now in podcast form! Our crew brings you all the news, views, highlights and laughs you need to follow the Beautiful Game in every corner of the globe, every Monday-Friday all year long.

Arsenal might be right to come into this game with a lot of confidence, in part because their period of rebuilding is over -- and can be considered a success by several metrics. Chief among them is that Arteta has led them to two of their best seasons in recent memory, keeping them in the title race for two consecutive seasons. The Gunners are inching closer to the point of the post-rebuild era when statement-making results are a necessity, which means the pressure is very much on them to deliver on Sunday.

The onus, then, will be on them to avoid a repeat of their 2-0 loss to Aston Villa a few weeks back that damaged their hopes of winning the title. Arsenal were unusually not clinical that day, generating 14 shots and limiting Villa to none on target before conceding twice in the second half. Their defensive inconsistencies were on display that day and even though they have followed that up with two games in which they outscored their opposition seven to zero and conceded just four shots on goal, it might be worth wondering whether or not Spurs can pull off a repeat. Scoring has been a weakness of sorts in recent weeks -- they were held scoreless twice in their last five, ranking in the league's bottom five in that stretch with just six goals scored and 22 shots on goal, underperforming their expected goals tally of 8.69 in the process. Son Heung-min and Brennan Johnson are probably still as likely as ever to score, though, so it's hard to fully count them out.

As long as Spurs maintain a competitive edge throughout, they can survive this game and build towards the future. While one project in North London continues through the early stages, though, another is under pressure to deliver the final results of their experiment. Sunday is not only about bragging rights against a rival, though those are undoubtedly important. For Arsenal, it will also be an exercise in turning trophy chases into actual silverware -- something they will have to do sooner rather than later if Arteta's tenure can be considered a resounding success.

The groundbreaking Dynamo Moscow tour of Britain in 1945

These Football Times

S everal months after World War Two had been declared a victory Great Britain and its allies, the English FA, striving to discover the intriguing nature of football behind the Iron Curtain, decided to invite the Soviet champions of 1945, Dynamo Moscow, to play against some of the Kingdom’s best clubs. After arranging the trip with the USSR embassy in London, the Englishmen awaited the arrival of the strongest Russian team of the era.

Meanwhile in Moscow, the Dynamo players rejoiced at the opportunity to take on the British teams, who still had an aura of invincibility in Eastern Europe having founded the game almost a century earlier. However, before departing to England, the Muscovites were asked to visit Joseph Stalin who, along with Lavrentiy Beria, Dynamo’s authoritative patron and also the chief of NKVD, the Soviet secret police, clarified to their sportsmen the impossibility of losing to the capitalist sides.

Strengthened by CDKA’s gifted striker Vsevolod Bobrov and two more talented players from the kindred Dynamo Leningrad, the team flew to glamorous London, whereas CDKA (later CSKA) who finished second in the USSR league table, settled with an amicable, slightly dull trip to Yugoslavia.

Chaos and noise followed news about the tour in England, where people knew next to nothing about their opponents. Few had ever heard of Dynamo Moscow, despite their star-studded domestic squad and wealth of talent. With dates of the Soviets’ arrival constantly changing, their team’s squad was mixed with a number of players having no relation to Dynamo Moscow; in reality, it was a national side that visited Britain under the name of Dynamo.

Some even speculated that it was Torpedo Moscow who were about to visit the British Isles. Regardless of rumour and intrigue, the coming men represented the nation that had just helped stop Hitler, so they were awaited with respect and esteem in most circles.

Dynamo finally arrived in the middle of November 1945. The Soviet delegation, with a translator and a commentator in its ranks, was disappointed to be greeted without their nation’s flag at Croydon airport, however that frustration soon gave way to a series of interviews with the waiting press. The tour was becoming big news in the written media.

Confusion reigned supreme for many of the players, who were rarely interviewed back in the USSR and were regular citizens to most. Even their translator seemed unwilling to talk much. Perhaps the Soviets’ lack of confidence in front of the press was what forced one major newspaper to brand them ‘The Silent Ones’. It just added to their mystique. After all, this was an era before frequent trips abroad for matches.

The entire squad was dressed in the same blue coats, carrying curious cases wrapped in a dark cloth in their hands. The media was puzzled about the content of those cases – some conspiracists even speculated that they may have smuggled an atomic bomb into the country. The answer was far more prosaic; knowing about the food rationing system operating in London, the Russians brought their meals with them.

The real problem for the hosts lay in finding safe accommodation for their guests in post-war London. Initially, they drove the Soviets to the Royal Horse Guards’ barracks in Whitehall. However, being offered nothing but bare beds without pillows and linen, the visitors refused to stay there. The only alternative option was to place the players and those accompanying them in different hotels.

Many calls and letters from London’s citizens, who learned about such negligence from their authorities, arrived at the Soviet embassy, with many offering to host the visitors in their houses and flats. The issue was finally settled when the whole delegation was provided with rooms at the Imperial Hotel in Russell Square.

Dynamo, despite being camera shy and lacking in English, were not as timid as they seemed. They came to the capital with a list of 14 requests, among which were, for example, that they would only eat  at the Soviet embassy – in an era of conspiracies, some suggested the players were afraid of being poisoned – would have one match refereed by a Soviet official, and would have to play Arsenal.

The English deemed their requests as brash ultimatums, although accepted all bar two. The request that Dynamo would play only once a week and on Saturdays were declined; after all, Saturday had always been the most important day of the week for the domestic game. With revenue being split 50-50, the tour was set.

Strangely, the Soviet players were to train during their tour at a dog track, although officials were suitably impressed with the quality of grass and changing rooms – all ensuring that no issue was taken.

Dynamo Moscow first appeared on pitch against Chelsea at a Stamford Bridge packed with 85.000 spectators, with tickets sold within days of going on release. The stands were awash with excitement and intrigue.

Before the game began, the visitors surprised their hosts with two unusual acts. First, they went on to the pitch 15 minutes before the game to warm up and stretch dynamically, which was something new to the locals; soon after, the Dynamo men gave a wreath of flowers to each Chelsea player, which was normal practice in the Soviet Union but far from so in England’s rough and tumble league. Dynamo’s quality of play turned out to be a surprise for the supporters too with nobody expecting anything of note from a side of amateurs. In the end, the Muscovites showed they were anything but.

The game started with Chelsea taking the initiative. Dynamo’s players were clearly overawed with the way fans supported the Blues – the noise was in complete contrast to the regimented Soviet style where supporters calmly followed the game, clapping and whistling on the odd occasion. In England, people sat incredibly close to the pitch and that generated more pressure on the players.

Precocious post-war goalscorer Tommy Lawton shone in Chelsea blue, but Russian goalkeeper Alexei Khomich was having the game of his life. He certainly played up to his nickname ‘The Tiger’, pulling off magnificent acrobatic saves and helping his team to a 3-3 draw.

When the final whistle blew fans invaded the pitch and lifted the Russian players on their shoulders, parading them as heroes from the East. The Football Association was suitably impressed with the Soviet football style and its representatives’ tactical acumen. It was something totally new to the British: players were constantly interchanging positions and running in different directions so that no defender could follow their movement. This is what was later famously termed ‘Organized Disorder’. “Dynamo is the best side I have ever played against,” John Harris, the Chelsea centre-back, confessed.

News about Dynamo’s unexpected performance spread rapidly round Europe and on 14 November, a day after the game at Stamford Bridge, Jules Rimet, the head of FIFA, met with the Soviet sports officials in Paris and the men signed a document that contained an invitation for the USSR to join FIFA. The tour was breaking ground in the football world.

Dynamo’s next stop was Cardiff, Wales, where the Soviet players were presented with miners’ lamps as souvenirs in honour of the region’s prevalent coal mining industry. Cardiff City had a reputation as an upcoming, young, fast team, but were merely a Third Division side. Incidentally, this was the level many expected the Dynamo players to be at.

The Russian champions managed to score 10 goals, many sublime team moves, to which the Welsh side responded only once. The Cardiff players were rumoured to have put their boots and a ball in a soda solution before the game to make their equipment harder, but the trick was of no use.

Dynamo returned to London to face their third challenge, this time the great Arsenal, who the Soviets were most keen to pit their wits against. Arsenal, a forward-thinking, progressive team during that era, like their Eastern counterparts boasted national team players on loan for the day from a selection of other clubs around the country. Stanley Matthews from Stoke City, Stanley Mortensen from Blackpool, Harry Brown from QPR and other distinguished players from Fulham and Bury joined The Gunners.

White Hart Lane, where the game was held – probably the only time in history Arsenal have called their dreaded rivals’ ground ‘home’ – was awash with thick fog, and little of the game could be seen from the stands. Even the referee, Nikolay Latyshev, experienced difficulty as he failed notice Arsenal’s George Drury, who had been sent off, returning to the pitch later as if nothing had happened.

Latyshev, who would later referee the 1962 World Cup final in Santiago  between Brazil and Czechoslovakia, controversially chalked off one of Arsenal’s goals, which was scored with the game at 3-3 and supposedly a perfectly fair effort – despite a foul deemed to have been committed in the build up. Controversy aside, the only thing that mattered to the Dynamo players was that they had won 4-3.

Despite the English voicing their dissatisfaction at the quality of officiating, the next game against Glasgow Rangers, their last on the tour, would see a Scottish referee take centre stage. The referee pointed to Dynamo’s penalty spot twice, both controversially. The Scots converted one of their spot-kicks but ultimately drew 2-2.

The atmosphere before and during the match at Ibrox was incredibly tense – euphoria and respect for their Eastern rivals giving way to a feeling that the Brits had embarrassed themselves by failing to beat their ideological rivals. Rangers invited the highly-promising James Caskie from Everton to help their cause, but Dynamo protested at such a move. In the end Caskie didn’t play; the thought of an Englishman coming to the help of a Scottish powerhouse was too much for the fans to accept.

Dynamo’s return to Moscow resembled scenes reminiscent of soldiers returning from war – as they had done just months earlier. The triumph in the war against Germany was still fresh in people’s minds and the footballers’ successful trip to Great Britain was regarded as another victory for the Union. Dynamo finished the tour unbeaten with a goal difference of plus 10, highlighting their might on the field to the rest of the world. Through their tour to Great Britain, Dynamo announced the coming of USSR football to the world.

Perhaps the quality of the Dynamo players and the respect they garnered during their tour was best summed up by one of the greatest English footballers of all time, Sir Stanley Matthews: “Many years passed since we first met the Russian football players. Since then, in the hearts of everyone who lived in those days, the words Dynamo Moscow are associated with the concept of class football.”

Mikel Arteta speaks to Arsène Wenger

Arteta receives advice from Wenger for Arsenal’s crunch derby at Spurs

  • ‘Invincibles’ won club’s last title at Tottenham 20 years ago
  • Arteta: ‘He always talked about that, about the fine margins’

Mikel Arteta has been getting advice from Arsène Wenger as Arsenal prepare for Sunday’s north London derby almost exactly 20 years after “the Invincibles” won the club’s last Premier League title at the home of their rivals Tottenham.

An Arsenal victory at Spurs would re-establish their four-point advantage over Manchester City before Pep Guardiola’s side face Nottingham Forest later in the day. City will start that match with two games in hand and Arteta insists Liverpool are not out of contention despite their defeat by Everton.

Thursday marked the anniversary of the 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane that confirmed Wenger’s Arsenal as champions in 2004, and Arteta revealed he has been in touch with his former manager to get tips about handling the pressure of a title run-in.

“I have spoken to him a few times,” said Arteta, who was captain under Wenger for two years before retiring in 2016. “There were certain topics about how they won it and the later stages.

“He used to talk about that when I was a player. It is always there in the hard drive. For this time of the season, at the end it is about finding a way to win the game. And that is it. You can do it in various ways when you look at how they won the titles and how they won certain games with very very, very close margins. He always talked about that, about the fine margins. And who is going to step up on the occasion to make it happen.”

A picture of Arsenal’s players that includes the current sporting director, Edu, celebrating their title on the pitch at White Hart Lane hangs on the wall outside the press conference room at the club’s training ground. Arteta was asked whether his side, who registered a first win at Tottenham’s new stadium last season after three successive defeats, could take inspiration from one of Arsenal’s most famous days.

“I understand that, but that’s not going to happen mathematically, even if we do win it,” he said. “But there are moments, obviously, that are very important in our history and I am sure that a lot of players know about it. Certainly the staff and the ones that have been here long enough know about it. It’s about making our own history now.”

Arsenal have played four matches since Tottenham were last in action for their 4-0 defeat to Newcastle on 13 April but Arteta is confident his battle-hardened team will be ready. “We are going to have to be very good to beat them,” he said.

Moscow guide&photo! Feel Putin vibes and explore the enigmatic Russian soul through history ...

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.

U18s report: Norwich City 0-9 Arsenal

Chido Obi

WHAT HAPPENED

Chido Martin Obi scored seven goals as our under-18s beat Norwich City 9-0 away from home on Saturday.

He has now scored 28 goals in 22 games this season, including 24 in the last seven.

We made the perfect start when Harrison Dudziak played a lovely ball through to Chido Martin Obi who, in a rich vein of goal scoring form, slotted it into the bottom right for 1-0 inside the first minute of the match.

Martin-Obi volleyed over the bar moments later after a cross had been lifted to the far post by Cam’ron Ismail.

We had a couple of great chances to make it 2-0 when Max Dowman won the ball high up the right wing. His cross came out to Dudziak who hit the post, before a defensive error from Norwich saw Andre Annous hit the crossbar.

We did double our lead though with the next attempt, Martin Obi once again beating the offside trap to calmly place the ball beyond Henry Bullen into the bottom left.

In the 17th minute, Martin Obi completed yet another hat-trick, picking out the bottom right corner from Annous’ pass.

Martin Obi then fired wide of the far post as he hunted his fourth before a long-range strike from Dudziak met the same fate.

In the 28th minute, Dowman played the ball over the top for Martin Obi to run onto and he managed to tuck it past the goalkeeper from a narrow angle for his fourth of the afternoon.

Dudziak linked up with Martin Obi again on the brink of half-time, the latter finding the bottom right once more for 5-0.

Jack Porter was called into action at the start of the second half, tipping a swerving ball over the bar to deny Alfie Doy.

In the 54th minute, Ismail crossed again for Martin Obi who shifted it onto his right foot and found the bottom right corner for 6-0.

Martin Obi bagged again for 7-0 beyond the hour mark, this time a powerful strike from the edge of the area.

He kept going for more, sending a couple of shots wide of the post in a dominant display.

Substitutes combined as Dan Casey played it through to Omari Benjamin who fired wide from close range.

Annous got himself on the scoresheet in the 88th minute with a powerful left-footed strike into the far corner before Casey got in on the act, taking the ball off Martin Obi and smashing it in for 9-0.

WHAT IT MEANS

We're third in the U18 Premier League South, two points behind West Ham United.

WHAT’S NEXT

Our under-18s have a north London derby away to Tottenham on Saturday, May 4, which is an 11am kick-off in the U18 Premier League South.

Starting XI: Porter, Ibrahim (Benjamin 59(, Ismail, Clarke, Sweet, Rosiak (Julienne 59), Dowman, Copley (Shuaib 59), Martin-Obi, Dudziak (C) (Casey 59), Annous
