What are the best months to snorkel in Belize?

The weather conditions are generally good year-round making snorkeling possible in all seasons. The climate is subtropical. Due to high humidity, it can rain anytime so make sure that your Belize packing list includes a rain jacket.

The dry season runs from December to May when you can expect little to no rain making these the best months for snorkeling. March and April are especially recommended when the water is the calmest and clearest.

Calm waters at secret bay Belize

There is wet season from June to October which means rainfall will impact a few hours of the day, but otherwise these months are a little warmer with average temperatures around 80- 84°F (27-29°C). This isn’t a bad time to come either as accommodation prices are lower than in the main season, but you need to prepare for interruptions due to weather conditions and/or trip cancellations.

To cut it short, if you are looking for the best visibility and warmest waters, arrive between April and early June before the rainy season starts and when the sea conditions are optimal for snorkeling. Moreover, this is the whale shark season too!

Regarding the sea temperatures, there isn’t much to worry about since the Caribbean Sea is warm enough year-round. In winter, expect to enjoy 79-80F/25.6-26.6C warm water, while in the summer months, it typically goes up to 84-85F/28.8-29.4C.

Such temperatures are comfortable for swimming without a wetsuit but if you know that you tend to feel cold or planning to do long snorkeling sessions, a 3mm shorty can come in handy. Wearing UV protection clothing (rash guard) is a must tough in all seasons to avoid sunburn, so make sure to pack it along with your regular gear.

Best spots to go snorkeling in Belize

If you prefer to explore areas that are still welcoming to tourists but aren’t filled with them, then you should visit Ambergris Caye. This stretch of area is home to several types of reef fish like snappers, angelfish, damselfish, and you can experience swimming with nurse sharks and stingrays too.

Palm trees along the sandy shoreline Ambergris Caye

Actually, Ambergris Caye offers some of the best Belize offshore snorkeling so if you don’t want to take boats to the outer reef, this is a great place. If you decide to take a boat trip, you can easily get to the nearby Mexico Rocks and Tres Cocos from here. Both of these fantastic Belize snorkeling spots are available from a short ride from San Pedro and feature shallow reefs that are excellent for beginners too.

Although there are no real reefs around Caye Caulker, you’ll also find plenty of sea life here which makes it a nice spot to visit for beginners. From smaller creatures such as crabs, sea horses and lobsters to colorful parrot fish and stingrays, many creatures can be found lurking around this Caye.

There is a very interesting shore snorkel spot here too, called The Split. It is technically a channel on the northern tip of the island that splits Caye Caulker. The channel is about 20-25ft/6-7.6m deep and provides a home to a variety of aquatic life like sponges, anemones, certain corals and fish species. On the sandy bottom, you can spot sea stars too.

Caye Caulker lies close to the area where sea cows can be seen ( Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary ), so if you want to see these beautiful, friendly creatures, you can easily sign up for a manatee-watching tour here. Swimming with them is prohibited tough, but you can do this if you are lucky enough to encounter one while snorkeling at one of the reefs.

Manatee in Belize

To get to Caye Caulker, the easiest is taking a water taxi ride from Belize City. There are several companies available offering roundtrips and also island hopping.

You can check off an item on your bucket list when you visit Hol Chan since this is the place where you can go snorkeling with sharks in Belize. This location is a 3 square miles marine reserve and is famous for its vibrant display of sea life and reef system. If you want to swim with colorful fish, nurse sharks, large stingrays and turtles, then this is the place to snorkel.

Brown stingray

The park is technically a 20 yards-wide, 25 ft deep channel in the barrier reef that was dedicated to a national park in 1987 in order to keep the area safe from over-fishing and allow the reef and marine life to recover.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is definitely one of the most popular snorkeling spots in Belize so it is easy to access it via boat from Ambergris Caye. Because of its popularity, it is always busy, so try to book a morning trip to avoid crowds.

There is a special Belize snorkeling spot in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve where a large number of harmless nurse sharks and also stingrays gather, called Shark Ray Alley.

The reason why so many sharks come to this place is simple, yet interesting: local fishermen used to clean their daily catch here throwing the morsels in the water, so technically they were feeding the sharks and that’s why they always return to the area.

Nurse shark Belize

Now there is no feeding needed; the sharks are already coming (and huge stingrays too) when they hear the motorboats creating a local attraction for snorkelers and divers.

This is definitely a unique experience for snorkeling in Belize and although these sharks are harmless, it might take a few minutes until you get used to the feeling that they swim close and their skin is touching yours. And the best is, that just a little south of shark point, there are fantastic corals in shallow water, so if you have time, ask your boatman to stop there too!

Tip: Belize is often compared to other popular Caribbean Islands in terms of snorkeling conditions. To get a clear picture of what destination you should visit, see here more guides: Roatan snorkel spots Snorkeling in Cozumel

Glover’s Reef, an UNSECO World Heritage Site on the remote Southwest Caye atoll offers the most fantastic snorkeling in Belize with incredibly diverse marine life.

Exploring Glover’s Reef Atoll is an honor in itself. While snorkeling here you will have a chance to see everything from sea urchins, starfish, sea cucumber, damselfish, angelfish to nurse sharks and stingrays. This fantastic reef life is just a short swim away from the shore, but you can easily take trips to the nearby coral shelf too!

Belize Glovers atoll

This interesting feature of Glover’s Reef is called The Wall. It’s an underwater cliff where the Caribbean Sea’s open water area begins and the reef here drops 2500 feet. While you may not be able to snorkel to the bottom, you can see where the cliff suddenly drops off into the deep ocean. It’s eerie and fascinating.

This may be not the top Belize snorkeling location, but definitely worth checking for cruise ship passengers. Harvest Caye is a recently built island where ships dock. It’s essentially an artificial private island that offers plenty of activities, shopping, and has nice beaches you can enjoy.

Harvest Caye Belize

Snorkeling from the shore might not be that enjoyable because the water is shallow and often murky because of the sandy bottom, but you join a snorkel trip leaving from the marine that takes you to the reef that is teeming with life including hard and soft corals and various sea creatures like rays, sea stars and critters.

One of the world’s most fascinating places is the Blue Hole in Belize which is the largest ocean sinkhole in the entire world and can even be seen from space. If you’re looking for unique snorkeling in Belize, then you will find it at the Blue Hole!

Blue Hole Belize

The hole spans 1,000 feet and is 400 feet deep. It was created 15.000 years ago when the existing limestone cave collapsed as sea levels rose. The area around the hole is packed full of reefs to explore.

Some sea life you may encounter in the Blue Hole are Caribbean Reef Sharks, spotted drums, parrotfish, and several others. It’s also possible to dive in the Blue Hole, but you need to be experienced.

If you’re wondering where to go snorkeling in Belize to find an extraordinary variety of marine life, then you need to go to Laughing Bird Caye which is a national park and World Heritage Site in the central lagoon of the Belize Barrier Reef, 11 miles offshore of Placencia.

Snorkelers who have visited this area in the past have reported seeing incredible snapper schools, barracuda, nurse sharks, turtles and lobsters.

Laughing Bird Caye

There are plenty of tours available ready to show you the best spots to snorkel. If you sign up for a Laughing Bird Caye trip, usually you will visit additional good snorkel spots too such as Lark Cayes where you can snorkel over huge coral heads.

But there’s far more to discover. Nurse and lemon sharks, as well as stingrays also make their home in this area.

Half Moon Caye on the Lighthouse Reef, not so far from the famous Blue Hole has a fantastic ecosystem to explore. The conservation area here measures 45 acres. It is home to the nesting Red Footed Booby Bird , and there are tons of snorkeling fun just waiting to be had.

The area features a great variety of marine life found here including hermit crabs, reef sharks, large groupers, and also different turtle species like loggerhead, green and hawksbill.

Most probably the most exciting Belize snorkeling experience is swimming with the world’s largest fish, the whale shark! These gentle filter feeders -that grow up to 60ft long- are a seasonal attraction here.

Whale shark in Belize

They can be seen in the Gladden Spit Marine Reserve, near Placencia every year between March and June as they migrate through the area. Tour operators monitor the whale sharks’ migration to ensure a high chance of an encounter. (Hint: the best is scheduling your trip for the full moon period).

Whale shark snorkeling and diving is regulated by the Belizean sustainable tourism practice so time slots are allocated for each tour operator to avoid crowding. There are also special guidelines you should follow for your own and for the creatures’ safety, please take these very seriously and you will certainly have an unforgettable, lifetime experience!

If you want more advanced Belize snorkeling experiences, then you should attempt to snorkel in Long Caye. Also called The Aquarium, this location is home to several species of fish. It’s better suited for advanced snorkelers because of the often-strong ocean currents.

Divers will enjoy this area the most, but all in all, this is a great place for snorkeling in Belize because the amazingly clear water makes observing sea life easier than ever. You’ll be able to see sponges, fans, and other reef structures. Should you wish to decide to spend a few days in this dreamy environment, there is even a hotel here, Itza Resort.

If you want to explore the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, then you should consider snorkeling in Tobacco Caye.

The island is only 5 acres long and only 30 inhabitants occupy it. To get the most out of your snorkeling, you should consider staying at the Tobacco Caye Paradise Resort.

Barracuda and reef fish at the reef in Belize

You’re situated right on the water and able to enjoy its fresh food and relaxing environment the whole time. It also offers rentals for snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

20 miles off the coast of Belize City, Turneffe is the largest atoll of the Mesoamerican Reef System, surrounded by deep waters on all sides.

Consisting of more than 150 bigger- and larger islands, it is one of the region’s ecologically most important areas and therefore was declared as a marine reserve too. With its clean, warm waters and extreme biodiversity, Turneffe offers the best snorkeling in Belize and in the whole Caribbean.

Thanks to these surrounding nutrient-rich waters and their protection status, Turneffe’s vibrant reefs have healthy stony and soft corals that are frequented by larger fish like tarpons, groupers and sharks. The mangrove shallows, and seagrass beds are nursing grounds for juvenile fish and invertebrates including threatened species.

Snorkeling in the Coco Plum Caye area means you should first book a room at the Coco Plum Island Resort . It’s a private island with adorable cabanas. Since it’s adult-only, it is a perfect honeymoon destination. If you are looking for a Belize snorkeling spot where tourists don’t clog up the beach, then this is the area for you.

Coco Plum Caye

You’ll find some of the favorites when you snorkel in this area: sea turtles, stingrays, groupers, and reef sharks are regular visitors on the reef. But if you wish to just sunbathe on this picture-perfect island, we can guarantee that you will have an excellent time!

Where to stay in Belize for snorkeling?

Belize offers a variety of accommodations for its visitors. To decide what resort to choose, consider if you want to stay at a remote location where you can focus on relaxation while enjoying Belize’s underwater wonders, or prefer a more central location where you can explore local life too.

In the first case, choose a resort at one of the outer atolls like Ambergris Caye, Glover’s Reef or Turneffe, while if you don’t mind spending your vacation at a more touristy location, we recommend staying in Caye Caulker or Placencia.

See our recommendation on some Belize snorkeling resorts below:

If you prefer to do shore snorkeling instead of signing up for boat excursions, the best is to stay at Tranquility Bay Resort . At this unique beachfront accommodation, you can access fantastic marine life directly from the beach.

This resort is found at the northern end of Ambergris Caye. It is away from the tourist zone and getting here takes a bit of effort, but if you want to spend your vacation fully relaxed while enjoying first-class snorkeling, this is definitely a place to consider booking!

If you’re interested in exploring incredibly diverse marine life, then make a reservation at the Glover’s Atoll Resort. It’s situated right next to the reef and allows you to easily start your snorkeling adventures right from the beach.

They even have over-the-water rooms available where you can have access to fantastic sea life directly from your room, but you can take boat trips too to the nearby coral shelf!

Those who really want to unplug and just be in the water all day long will find Glover’s Atoll Hotel the best snorkeling resort in Belize.

A family-friendly secluded private island resort with fantastic white sand beaches and services/amenities to please everyone. The staff is very hospitable and highly qualified to provide guests with a safe and fun dive and snorkel experience.

Many excellent reef sites are just about 5-10 minutes boat ride from the resort, and Belize’s popular snorkeling sites such as the Blue Hole, Lighthouse Reef Atoll or Half Moon Caye are also not too far from Turneffe.

Book your stay at Iguana Reef Inn if you want to stay in Caye Caulker. The hotel is situated right on the water’s edge and is nestled within an authentic Caribbean town. Its architecture, alone, heralds the Old Caribbean style.

You can snorkel right from the beach or join excursions organized by the resort. The shore snorkeling is not exceptional since there is no reef here but you can see huge stingrays, seahorses, crabs and some fish. It is also easy to get to the Split snorkel spot from here.

Location Description

Belize is home to some of the Caribbean’s best snorkeling sites, without a doubt.   With the second largest barrier reef system in the world starting just 1,000 feet of the country’s shoreline and extending for over 190 miles—the entire length of Belize, it should come as no surprise.

belize snorkeling excursions

Belize City is the main port for the country, despite not being the capital city. This coastal city hosts the country’s primary airport, Philip SW Goldson International Airport, (BZE), and is also the jumping-off point for all snorkeling excursions to the great Belize Barrier Reef. While there are many smaller atolls, cays, and hundreds of islands within this massive reef system, there are three large atolls that sit just east of the main barrier reef where nearly all the snorkeling will take place. Liveaboard snorkeling safaris will primarily concentrate their time around the Glovers and Turneffe Atoll, while resort snorkeling safaris will spend their time around Turneffe Atoll and Lighthouse Reef. Lighthouse reef is where the famous Blue Hole is located.

Currents really aren’t something snorkelers need to worry about around Belize. Even around the full or new moon—when currents are typically their strongest, the current is still very manageable and will make for a gentle drift snorkel at the very most. On all of our snorkeling safaris we always make sure to give the snorkeling guests a full briefing about the site and which way the current is running, if any. We always snorkel with the current, never against it.

Marine Life

The Belize Barrier Reef is an area rich with life big and small. In the very shallows around the coral heads you’re likely to see a variety of the smaller tropical Caribbean reef fish like yellowtail damsels, barred hamlets, and a couple different species of juvenile angelfish. A bit deeper, hiding beneath the coral heads you’re likely to find large lobsters, adult angelfish, schools of grunts, and nurse sharks.

belize snorkeling excursions

Many of the reefs have patches of sand or a sandy fringe where larger southern stingrays and their smaller more ornate cousins—the yellow stingray can be found resting. This is also a great place to find spotted eagle rays as they hunt for crustaceans and mollusks living under the sand. At night it’s a completely different story, species that were typically hiding in the day like moray eels, octopus, nudibranchs, giant crabs & lobsters, and toadfish come out to hunt.

Likely Marine Life Encounters

Other Likely Encounters

Grey Angelfish • Queen Angelfish • Peacock Flounder • Green Moray Eel • Spotted Drum • Smooth Trunkfish • Spotted Scorpionfish • Trumpetfish • Southern Stingray • Yellow Stingray • Barjacks • Porcupinefish • Great Barracuda

Belize Snorkeling Season

While Belize can technically be snorkeled year-round, the best snorkeling and most predicable weather occur during the area’s dry season—from February until May. Winds are milder during these times, and rain is seldom. Air temperatures during the peak season are generally around 83f (28c)   in the day and mid to lower seventies at night. Water temperatures are typically around 80f at this time of year.

Belize Aggressor III next to coral reef

Marine life encounters really don’t change too much throughout the year as most of the inhabitants aren’t a migratory species, ensuring us snorkelers the best chances for outstanding marine life interactions. On any one of our Belize snorkeling safaris you can expect to have beautiful reefs, lots of colorful reef fish, some schools of larger fish, eagle rays, turtles, nurse sharks, octopus, and so much more.

Snorkeling Holiday Examples

Logistically, Belize is a very easy place to run snorkeling safaris. Direct flights from the southern hubs in the United States are around 4 hours a the very longest, and the airport in Belize City is just twenty minutes from the pier where all the boats will depart from. The pier actually starts at a very nice hotel, the Radisson Fort George, which makes it very easy and comfortable for those guests arriving a day or more early to check-in and relax before the snorkeling excitement begins.

We offer two different types of snorkeling safaris to Belize, one option is to be based at a resort for the duration of the snorkeling safari, the other is via liveaboard—which we charter exclusively for Snorkel Venture guests. These are all group snorkeling safaris led by one of our experienced Snorkel Venture snorkeling guides. We do also offer a photo-centric tour via liveaboard where the Snorkel Venture guide is also an award-winning underwater photographer and will conduct daily seminars on underwater photography.

The liveaboard snorkeling safaris we run in Belize are one week long, and for the duration of that week we will be based on a beautiful and very reputable liveaboard, the Belize Aggressor III or Belize Aggressor IV. As with all of our liveaboard snorkeling safaris we charter the full boat just for us. In that week we will explore the areas around Glovers and Turneffe Atoll with at least three daily snorkeling sessions. We do usually end up offering four snorkels each day as many guests can’t get enough of the night snorkels! On the final day of the tour we only offer two snorkel sessions as we need time for our kit to dry and pack. As with just about all our snorkeling safaris, all meals, snorkeling, accommodation, and land excursions are included. On the Aggressor boats the beer, wine, and soft drinks are also included.

Our resort-based snorkeling safari with Turneffe Island Resort runs similar to the liveaboard safari, only now we are based on a tropical island in a very nice resort. Every day after breakfast we’ll jump on our own private snorkel boat complete with guides and head out for at least three different snorkels on three different sites. Night snorkels will also be offered. With this particular tour, we won’t be visiting Glover’s reef as it’s just too far to reach conveniently, however, we will spend a day snorkeling around the famous Lighthouse Reef as well as visiting the Blue Hole. The majority of the time spent snorkeling will be around the expansive Turneffe Atoll.

The best snorkeling in Belize

The best snorkeling in Belize

Belize has some of the best snorkeling in the world. Find out where to explore protected coral reefs, swim with sharks and stingrays, and snorkel from an overwater bungalow.

Despite being one of the smallest countries in Central America, Belize offers incredible opportunities for aquatic adventures and is a world-class snorkeling and scuba diving destination. With numerous low-lying islands and atolls and extensive coral reef systems, Belize features some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean .

Most of the country’s best snorkel sites are along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The barrier reef is the second-largest in the world and stretches for more than 600 miles along the coasts of Mexico , Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. 1

Belize has a range of snorkeling destinations to suit a variety of budgets and time constraints. From secluded multi-day adventures on remote atolls to easy day trips close to the mainland, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Here are the best places to go snorkeling in Belize.

  • Hol Chan Marine Reserve

coral reef hol chan marine reserve

The Hol Chan Marine Reserve is one of the best and most easily accessible places to snorkel in Belize. You can reach the marine reserve on day trips from San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and Belize City.

The marine reserve includes four main sections: the Hol Chan Cut, the Seagrass Beds, the Mangroves, and Shark Ray Alley. Each place offers something unique, but the best and most popular snorkel spots are Shark Ray Alley and the Cut.

At Shark Ray Alley, you can snorkel among numerous docile nurse sharks and southern stingrays. The Cut provides the chance to swim through a channel in the reef and view healthy elkhorn coral, moray eels, sea turtles, and colorful fish, such as French angelfish, Spanish hogfish, and blue tang.

Access is by boat only. There is a fee to enter the marine reserve, which guided tours typically include in the cost.

  • Mexico Rocks and Tres Cocos

Tres Cocos and Mexico Rocks have calm, shallow waters and are enjoyable places to visit for beginners and advanced snorkelers. You can reach both sites with a short boat ride from San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and easily combine them with Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

The clear waters have spectacular visibility, allowing snorkelers to fully take in the area’s vibrant corals and diverse sea life. In addition to brain coral and gorgonians, you can see rays, hawksbill turtles, spiny lobsters, eels, grunts, yellowtail snappers, and other tropical fish.

  • Lighthouse Reef Atoll

Lighthouse reef Atoll belize

At 55 miles (88 km) from the mainland, Lighthouse Reef is one of the most remote atolls in Belize. Getting there requires a boat ride lasting a few hours, but the trip is well worth it. Lighthouse Reef contains gorgeous cayes and amazing places to snorkel.

The atoll is home to Belize’s famous Great Blue Hole, a circular sinkhole that is a dream destination for many travelers. The Blue Hole is a world-class dive site, but snorkelers can also enjoy the awe-inspiring views as the underwater cavern plunges to a depth of around 410 feet (125 meters). 2

Half Moon Caye on the southeast edge of the Lighthouse Reef is another excellent destination. The island is protected as a marine reserve and bird sanctuary and is one of the most beautiful cayes in all of Belize. Half Moon Caye has a variety of snorkeling spots with shallow waters that are suitable for snorkelers of all skill levels.

Long Caye, also called ‘The Aquarium,’ is a great spot, but it’s better for experienced snorkelers due to ocean currents. The clear waters offer incredible underwater visibility and are filled with colorful fish and other marine life.

  • Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve

green moral eel in coral belize barrier reef

Gladden Spit is the best place in Belize to snorkel with whale sharks, which migrate through the area between March and June. Plan your trip around the full moon for the best chance of spotting these enormous fish.

To protect wildlife, the government strictly controls the number of tour boats allowed in the whale shark areas at any given time. Make sure to book your spot early if swimming with whale sharks is on your Belize bucket list.

Tours to Gladden Spit leave from the town of Placencia on the mainland in southern Belize. The marine reserve is part of the Belize Barrier Reef System and lies about 28 miles (45 km) off the coast of Placencia.

Another top site within the marine reserve is Turtle Alley near Silk Cayes. Visitors can spot hawksbill, loggerhead, and green sea turtles in addition to stingrays, nurse sharks, lemon sharks, snappers, barracudas, and corals.

  • Glover’s Reef Atoll

boat at glover reef atoll belize

Glover’s Reef Atoll is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers. The oval-shaped atoll contains a lagoon with thriving marine life and hundreds of pristine patch reefs to explore.

You’ll need to take a boat to get to Glover’s Reef Atoll. The trip takes about two hours from Dangriga on the mainland.

The best way to experience this remote area is by staying at one of the resorts on the small cayes. The rustic overwater bungalows are perfect for those seeking a secluded spot to enjoy Belize’s aquatic wonders.

  • Turneffe Atoll

grey angle fish at Turneffe atoll

Turneffe is the largest coral atoll in the Caribbean and has some of Belize’s best snorkeling 3 . If you want to visit the atoll on a day trip, plan for a full-day excursion.

While Turneffe is the closest atoll to the mainland, it still takes about 1.5 hours to get there from Belize City. The atoll also makes a fantastic getaway for travelers who want to spend a few days or more exploring this underwater wonderland, with various resorts offering all-inclusive snorkeling packages.

Turneffe Atoll’s diverse ecosystems are home to varied sea creatures, including rays, sea turtles, lobsters, reef fish, and dolphins. If you’re lucky, you may even spot manatees swimming nearby. Keep in mind that it’s illegal to swim with manatees in protected habitats like the Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary. If you see manatees in the wild outside of these areas, give them plenty of space and do not approach them.

  • Caye Caulker

sunset at caye caulker belize

The small island of Caye Caulker is one of the most accessible snorkeling destinations from mainland Belize. You can stay on the laid-back island or take a day trip or water taxi from Belize City or Ambergris Caye.

The best places to snorkel near the island are Coral Gardens, the Split, and Shark Ray Alley (this site is a different location from Shark Ray Alley in the Hol Chan Marine reserve). Most guided tours include all three of these stops.

Coral Gardens is one of Belize’s top snorkel sites for beginners. The shallow waters have clear visibility and offer the chance to see colorful corals and many species of fish.

The Split is a channel separating Caye Caulker in two and is the only place on the island where you can snorkel directly from the shore. The area’s seagrass beds and mangroves are home to pufferfish, starfish, southern stingrays, and butterflyfish. Stick to the edges of the channel to avoid boat traffic, kayaks, and other swimmers.

If you want to see Caye Caulker’s Shark Ray Alley, you’ll need to visit on an organized tour. Once you’re there, you can swim through the clear, shallow water and observe the numerous stingrays and nurse sharks in the seagrass beds.

  • Tobacco Caye

tobacco caye belize

Tobacco Caye is a tiny island on the Belize Barrier Reef, located within the South Water Caye Marine Reserve. With a year-round population of 30 people, the remote caye is an ideal place to relax and unplug.

The calm, clear waters make Tobacco Caye a paradise for snorkelers, divers, and paddlers looking for an off-the-grid spot. There are several rustic accommodation options on the island, including waterfront cabins at Tobacco Caye Paradise where you can snorkel directly from your room. To reach the caye, you can take a 30-minute boat ride from Dangriga on the mainland.

  • Best snorkeling tours

There are a wide range of snorkeling tours available in Belize to fit your time constraints, location, and budget. For those in Belize City with limited time, we recommend this half-day tour to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Caye Caulker or this 5-hour boat trip to Caye Caulker, Coral Gardens, and Shark Ray Alley.

If you’re staying in Caye Caulker, this 4-hour excursion features six different snorkeling sites within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and lunch aboard the boat. For travelers in Ambergris Caye, this full-day snorkeling and sailing tour takes you from San Pedro to Caye Caulker, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and Shark Ray Alley aboard a 40-foot sailboat.

  • Best places to stay

Belize’s islands and atolls offer fantastic places for snorkelers to stay when visiting this Central American nation. Off The Wall Dive Center & Resort on Glover’s Reef Atoll is one of the best places to stay for divers and snorkelers, with options to add guided snorkeling and scuba diving tours to your accommodation package. On Lighthouse Reef Atoll, we recommend Huracan Diving Lodge , located only 12 minutes from the famous Blue Hole. For travelers seeking an extremely secluded spot, the rustic beach cabanas at Tobacco Caye Paradise are an excellent place to unwind.

If you’re looking for a less remote location, the town of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye is just a short boat ride away from the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Mexico Rocks, and Tres Cocos. Xanadu Island Resort is a top pick in San Pedro, with complimentary kayaks, paddle boards, and bicycles.

  • Belize snorkeling FAQ

Can you snorkel from the beach in Belize?

The coast of mainland Belize primarily consists of tropical forest and mangrove ecosystems that are not ideal for snorkeling. To reach the best snorkel spots, you’ll need to travel a few miles offshore to the Belize Barrier Reef or further out to one of three atolls.

Once you’re there, getting to many snorkel sites still requires a boat ride or kayak trip. One of the few exceptions on this list is the Split in Caye Caulker. Some of the resorts on Belize’s atolls and Tobacco Caye also have snorkeling right from the beach or from your overwater bungalow.

What can I see while snorkeling in Belize?

The Belize Barrier Reef is one of the world’s most diverse aquatic ecosystems. The reef is home to an abundance of sea life, including 500 fish species, 70 hard coral species, and 36 soft coral species, so you’ll have the chance to see a wide variety of sea creatures ( 1 ). Marine life sightings in Belize may include West Indian manatees, sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, nurse sharks, whale sharks, dolphins, conch, groupers, southern stingrays, snappers, barracudas, spiny lobsters, and numerous reef fish.

When is the best time to go snorkeling in Belize?

The best time to snorkel in Belize is from December to May, during the country’s dry season. This period is also the prime tourist season, so you should expect higher rates and busier attractions.

Although the subtropical climate allows for snorkeling and scuba diving throughout the year, showers and strong winds during the rainy season (June to November) can reduce visibility and make snorkeling less enjoyable. Hurricanes and tropical storms are also possible, with August, September, and October experiencing the highest chance of severe weather.

Water temperatures are relatively stable year-round. The sea hovers around 77-78°F (25°C) from November through March and rises to about 83-84°F (28-29°C) between April and October ( 2 ).

Snorkeling in Belize: Cayes, Atolls, Marine Reserves, Big Fish & Amazing Corals

Belize snorkeling

On the north-eastern coast of Central America , the English speaking country Belize borders Mexico to its north and Guatemala to its west. However, most importantly, Belize borders the Caribbean sea on the east which includes the 2nd largest Barrier Reef in the World (the biggest being in Australia).

Since Belize’s best snorkel spots are located on (or close to) its Barrier Reef , you need to join a boat tour. On the other hand, there are a whole lot of snorkel spots and boat tours to choose from. And hey, even better, snorkeling in Belize is lovely.

How to get there

The Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (also known as Belize Airport) is located in Belize City. From there you could either hire a car, grab a taxi or use public transportation to reach one of these snorkel spots.

We always use Skyscanner , especially because there’s an option to combine your flight with some great deals on airport car hire. If you don’t have specific travel dates in mind, try their “ Flexible dates ” function (you’ll get this option once you select your departure date). That’s where we often find some great deals!

Where To Snorkel

Belize’s snorkel spots can easily be divided into 2 categories: Cayes and Atolls . A caye is an island (often sandy) on top of a coral reef. An atoll is a ring-shaped coral island that surrounds a body of water. You’ll find the cayes on top of the coral reef and the atolls a little further out.

Belize snorkel map

Why We Prefer The Northern Part Of The Reef

In our opinion, the waters around Ambergris Caye are pretty much the best in regards to snorkeling . The reefs are healthy and especially the water is extremely clear. You’ll find a good amount of boat tours departing from San Pedro (in the south of Ambergris Caye) which makes it easy to hop aboard. Furthermore, the Cayes density is best within this area and underwater visibility is usually better compared to the south.

However, and this is important: The islands towards the south are packed with beauty! Snorkeling is often still decent, but oh my, these little islands are just wonderful to visit and to relax at. In other words, every island around Belize has “something special” to offer. Some have better snorkeling and some have prettier beaches. Wherever you go, chances are you’ll love it!

Keep in mind that Belize is packed with loads of awesome snorkel spots. This article includes our personal favorites, but there’s way more to explore!

Our Favorite Cayes

1. hol chan marine reserve & shark ray alley.

Since these two locations are located pretty close to each other, most snorkelers end up visiting both from one single boat trip. Shark Ray Alley is actually part of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Ambergris Caye is located nearby so people often depart from San Pedro (like in the video below).

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is quite popular and therefore often crowded. However, it’s still a great spot to snorkel because of its fantastic coral and interesting marine life. The channel (or cut as they often call it) that runs through the reef is the most interesting spot to explore. However, it’s also the deepest – up to 25 feet give or take. The areas around the cut are shallower, about 5 feet or so (and contain more coral).

Besides sea turtles you’ll be able to observe moray eels, angelfish, barracuda, stingrays, spotted eagle rays and nurse sharks. The elkhorn corals are very impressive too.

Shark Ray Alley is located just below the Hol Chan cut. Fishermen used to leave their excess fish right in this spot which attracted a good amount of returning nurse sharks and stingrays. These days, tour guides still feed these animals so that snorkelers are able to observe them up close. Who knows a spotted eagle ray even joins the fun. Since this area is quite shallow (about 5-10 feet), this is definitely a great location to snorkel with a GoPro .

It’s important to stick to the rules that are provided by the tour guides. You won’t be feeding the fish yourself and you definitely don’t want to snorkel along the Hol Chan cut all alone (there are currents present). So always stay close to your snorkel instructor and within your personal limits.

2. Mexico Rocks

Our second favorite snorkel spot is called Mexico Rocks. This is another location close to Ambergris Caye. Boat tours sometimes combine Mexico Rocks with Tres Cocos (just like in the video below). We however focus on Mexico Rocks for now.

What we like best about this location is its shallow and clear water . Expect depths between 5 and 10 feet in between vibrant coral formations. Once again, you won’t find any problems to visit Mexico Rocks from Ambergris Caye. Even though the water is often relatively calm, waves and currents are still possible.

Besides nurse sharks, stingrays and maybe even a spotted eagle ray you’ll be able to observe turtles, moray eels, lobster and a few other fish species. Like we said, the coral is great in this location.

3. Goff’s Caye

We explained earlier that we prefer the areas around Ambergris Caye when it comes to snorkeling. However, that doesn’t mean that the some of its southern locations aren’t worth a visit. Goff’s Caye is located west of Turneffe Atoll. If you like palm trees and a white sandy beach , this will work. Belize City is nearby, so try to join a boat tour from there.

Goff’s Caye is more of a “sunbathing paradise” from where you can snorkel directly off the beach or by going out on a boat . The snorkeling is quite decent with various schools of fish, coral and pretty big sea turtles. Compared to the locations we previously mentioned, Goff’s Caye allows the entire family to have fun (whether you snorkel or not).

4. Tobacco Caye

The first image at the top of this article is in fact Tobacco Caye. Just like Goff’s Caye, this is a beautiful little island with very decent snorkeling. If you’d like to combine nature’s beauty with an interesting marine life, consider to visit Tobacco Caye.

When it comes to snorkeling, Tobacco Caye might allow you to spot an octopus or even a dolphin . Various fish species, turtles, lobsters and more can all be observed around the corals and seagrass. You could get yourself a seafront cabana with a private bath, a veranda and even a hammock. Yes, this island is all about very decent snorkeling combined with a moment of relaxation.

Our Favorite Atoll

If you take a look at our map you’ll notice 3 atolls, a little further out than the cayes. Like we explained earlier, atolls are ring-shaped coral islands that surrounds a body of water. In other words, you’ll be snorkeling in (usually) shallow water surrounded by a protective reef.

The 3 atolls are called Turneffe Atoll, Lighthouse Reef Atoll and Glover’s Reef Atoll. Whichever one you visit, they all offer lovely shallow snorkeling. In this article we focus on Glover’s Reef but it’s definitely worth it to do some research about the other atolls.

Glover's Reef Atoll

Glover’s Reef Atoll

Glover’s Reef Atoll is a marine reserve , about 2,5 hours out by boat. Because of it’s remote location, many snorkelers book one of the beach huts to stay for the night (but you can just as well visit for the day). The atoll connects a few islands which results in a shallow lagoon with amazing coral formations.

The protective characteristics of Glover’s Reef atoll often results in calm water. Snorkeling is great within the shallow areas as you can see from the video below. Experienced snorkelers could explore some of the deeper areas. The marine life is quite similar to the cayes with turtles, lobster, barracuda, nurse sharks, angelfish, parrotfish and many more.

If you’re a fan of coral, this atoll will make you a happy snorkeler. Besides snorkeling, kayaking (or kayak sailing) is a popular activity. More activities and information about the beach huts can be found at Glover’s Atoll Resort .

Belize Climate

Belize’s tropical climate can be divided into a wet and dry season: The wet season lasts from May until October and the dry season from November until April. February, March and April are the driest months with an average temperature of about 79°F. May until September have the highest average temperatures (about 83.5°F). In our opinion it’s best to visit Belize during the dry season.

Your Guide to Belize Barrier Reef Snorkeling

Where To Snorkel in Belize

Belize has an expansive network of marine parks and there a few places on earth to match the undersea world of Belize. The premiere destinations for snorkeling in Belize are the Southwater Caye Marine Reserve , Glover’s Reef Atoll and Lighthouse Reef Atoll .

These detailed maps show some of the most popular dive and snorkel sites in Belize:

Dive and Snorkel Sites Lighthouse Reef

Glovers Reef Atoll

Dive and Snorkel Sites Glovers Reef

Southwater Caye Marine Reserve

Dive and Snorkel Sites Southwater Caye

When To Snorkel in Belize

You can snorkel in Belize all year round. However, the dry season is from November to May and is generally the best time to visit and snorkel the Belize Barrier Reef. Visibility remains constant year-round away from the mainland shore.

What to Wear for Snorkeling in Belize

For a Belize snorkeling adventure, a lightweight wetsuit or a spandex/lycra dive suit is recommended and this will keep you from getting cold, especially when spending extended time in the water.  Another option is to wear polypropylene or capilene long underwear and this method doubles up as protection from sunburn. Wearing a wetsuit or long underwear also reduces the need for full body application of sunscreen in the water, as residues from sunscreens will harm corals and cause bleaching.

Snorkeling with Sea Life in Belize

Belize is home to hundreds of the world's most unique underwater creatures. Some of the more interesting creatures you can expect to snorkel with in Belize include:

West Indian Manatee

Manatees (or sea cows) are gentle giants that live their lives in the water, even though they are mammals.  Growing up to 15 feet in size, the females are larger than the males and can weigh up to 3000 pounds, though typically they will be 10 feet and 1500 pounds.  Some of the best areas to spot these incredible creatures are at the Village of Gale's point, near Dangriga and the Swallow Caye Marine Reserve, which can be accessed from Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye.

Manatee Belize

There are three main species of rays you can look out for when snorkeling in Belize; the southern stingray, the spotted eagle ray and manta rays.

Snorkeling at Tobacco Caye, Belize

Belize is home to three species of sea turtles.  The green turtle, the hawksbill and the loggerhead turtle. Sea turtles congregate around Belize due to the ideal feeding and nesting conditions. A Belize snorkel trip is a once in a lifetime chance to experience these fascinating reptiles in the wild.

Snorkeling Turtles Belize

Whale Sharks

The whale shark is not a whale, but it is the largest fish in the world. Whale sharks gather in Belize during the spring months when their food supply of snappers is spawning in the area. One great spot to see them is at Gladden Spit, near Placencia in the southern part of Belize.  Their gentle nature and calm demeanour make them a popular ocean giant for snorkelers to swim along with.
