Read more details below:
NEW YORK (May 9, 2016) – Professional fun-seeker and travel enthusiast Bert Kreischer is back, braving some of the wildest, tallest, most adrenaline-pumping rides, and competing in some of the wackiest challenges in North America in Season Three of Travel Channel’s “Bert the Conqueror.” Premiering with back-to-back episodes on Tuesday, June 7, at 8:00 p.m. & 8:30 p.m. ET/PT, the 14-episode run follows Kreischer as he takes on the country’s most epic rides. This season, the thrills and excitement are bigger and more daring than ever as Kreischer showcases the fun and ingenious side of the continent with a smile, a laugh and more than a few screams. “Some of the most fun I’ve ever had has been filming ‘Bert the Conqueror,'” said Kreischer. “As a stand-up comedian, I love putting this humorous spin on travel, and I get the added bonus of using all these wild adventures in my act. If there’s an adrenaline rush, I will find it; if there’s an anxiety attack, I will have it.” In the season premiere at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, Kreischer heads to Six Flags New England in Agawam, Mass., to take on two record-breaking rides: the Wicked Cyclone, the park’s new hybrid coaster featuring the most airtime on the East Coast; and the New England SkyScreamer – at 400 feet tall, it’s the highest swing ride in the world. Then, he travels up to Rockland, Maine, to compete in the Maine Lobster Festival’s Great International Lobster Crate Race – a maritime festival pastime that’s a lot harder than it looks! Kreischer tackles over-the-top attractions and rides all summer long, with upcoming adventures in California, Canada, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Washington.”

Screen Rant
Travel channel's powerful bert kreischer: the fearless host (who's actually afraid).
Bert Kreischer is Travel Channel's worst-kept secret. Tackling any challenge thrown at him, what makes Bert different is that he's scared - of alot. But that won't stop him. Maybe.
Quickly becoming one of television's worst-kept secrets, Travel Channel host & comedian Bert Kreischer has been endearing the world over, on and off the screen. Recounting hilarious adventures like wrestling bears with marshmallows and being fired from Barnes & Nobles for working out in the basement, Kreischer's stories can be found almost everywhere. Starting tonight on his new Travel Channel series Trip Flip , Kreischer adds to his collection of tales, as he takes two unsuspecting members of the public on the vacation of a lifetime.
For the past two years, Kreischer has been host of Travel Channel's Bert the Conqueror , a series which earned him the title of "reluctant daredevil." Up for any type adventure, though fearful of many of them, Bert the Conqueror's appeal was not simply from watching Kreischer "conquer" the activity placed before him, but it was also from watching him conquer his own fears – which are many.
From a fear of flying, to a fear of heights, to a fear being [anything] by [anything], Kreischer perfectly fits in with the hilarious honesty that the likes of Anthony Bourdain and Adam Richman have become known for. Often breaking the "typical hosting rules" to question the safety of what he's about to do, Kreischer's cautious optimism always makes for entertaining viewing as he completes the challenge given to him.
By being asked to do so many crazy, sometimes dangerous, activities, Kreischer uses Google to calculate his likelihood of surviving each stunt. Doing what any sane person would do if asked to do something they were afraid of, Kreischer's Internet searches about potential accidents relieved him before bungee jumping. As he's said previously, "you'll find almost nothing." Skydiving, however, has a "surprisingly high number" of incidents. Even so, Kreischer, like always, pushed through his fears and jumped out of a plane.
Powerful Bert Kreischer hotel room art
Having Rachel Ray with him certainly helped, but Kreischer admits that he only jumped out of that plane because of Laureen Ong, president of Travel Channel:
I called Laureen and said, 'I jumped out of a plane, and I did this because you're a great boss!' She didn't even say 'Thank you'. She said, 'Listen, don't ever do anything you're not comfortable doing. We do not need you to get hurt. No one makes money if you're hurt. No one is happy if you're hurt.'
No doubt a comforting response, Ong's comments reiterates the feeling of family that all of the network's hosts feel. " I wish I could go into better the things that would make people uncomfortable with me saying, because the way that they take care of us is beyond comprehension" says Kreischer . Adam Richman's move from the Man vs. Food series to Adam Richman's Best Sandwich In America , to make sure the host doesn't continue to overindulge himself in unhealthy eating competitions, is the most public example of what Kreischer was referring to.
Having worked at other networks, Kreischer knows what it's like to have his fears about stunts realized, and for the network to not care about his safety:
When I was on Hurt Bert on FX - and I'm not crapping on FX, I'm just being honest - there was a point when I realized that they didn't care if I died. If I died, they'd say ' Of course it's a legal thing, but think of the numbers.' I genuinely got mauled by a bull. The bull broke my ribs, broke my foot, and they came up to me and said, 'Listen, We need you to get in the barrel.' I was like, 'What?!'
Trip Flip in New Orleans
Of course, even though Bert's new series, Trip Flip, takes away from continuous stunts - instead allowing him to gift a once-in-a-lifetime vacation to people on the street - he still has to deal with his fears. What's different is that now he also has to make sure that people they select for the trip have as much fun as possible - so the days of being tricked into jumping off of the Stratosphere in Las Vegas, by his cameraman, are over. Kreischer admitted that his fear of flying is getting better, and he's still going through with activities that make him take pause.
While filming an upcoming episode of Trip Flip , Kreischer recounts to us how he was able to back out of jumping off of a high cliff in Scotland, while also making sure that his guests had the best time of their life:
I don't want anyone doing anything they're uncomfortable with, so I will do whatever they're doing first, or as many times as it takes, in order to get them comfortable. But I also don't want anyone to go home and say, 'Ah, I wish I had done that..' So there's a 65ft cliff face – it's a huge cliff you have to jump off of at the peak. It's 65ft at the top. The dude and I go up there, and we get up to the top - and we get up to the top where you can look over. He looks at me and said, 'Are you going to do it?' I said, 'I'll do it first if you need me to.' He said, 'No, I need to go first. If I watch you, I won't go.' He gets up on the top, and I see him up there trembling and swaying – and I start panicking. He jumps off the tall one, sticks it, and the valley goes crazy!
Bert Kreischer in Edinburgh, Scotland for Trip Flip
At that moment I was like, 'I can't do it! I can't do it!' So I lean down and say, 'I don't want to steal your thunder; this is your vacation! You're the man! I'm going to walk back down!' I totally wimped out and jumped off of the 55ft one. Even jumping off of that one, I was like, 'Oh my God! This is insane!' But if he wouldn't have jumped off it first, I would have, just to make him comfortable.
Currently in New York filming an episode of Trip Flip , Kreischer may have averted any type of fear inducing stunts (besides the plane trip there), though the same can't be said for tonight's premiere. In New Orleans, to tackle the best of what they have to offer, Kreischer boards a seaplane with his unsuspecting vacationers – one of whom also has a fear of flying. While none of Kreischer's potential concerns about the plane made it to the episode, we know they were there.
It's only just a matter of time before we hear the story about them.

What did Bert Kreischer do on Travel Channel?
How bert kreischer became a travel channel star.
Bert Kreischer first gained fame from a Rolling Stone article in 1997 titled “The Undergraduate” that chronicled his wild partying antics in college, dubbing him the “top partyer at the Number One Party School in the country.” This notoriety launched Bert‘s comedy career as he embraced storytelling and stand-up focused on his crazy stories from his Van Wilder-esque college days.
After achieving success on the comedy circuit, Bert landed spots on shows like Comedy Central Presents and Late Night with David Letterman. From there, his career took off with acting roles and appearances on reality shows like The Amazing Race.
According to an interview with The Comics Journal, Bert caught the attention of Travel Channel executives after his appearance on the reality show Real Road Rules, where his bold personality shone through. They thought he‘d be perfect for rebooting their classic adventure travel show Three Sheets.
“They wanted a host who was funny, engaging and willing to dive headfirst into any situation or activity. I was known for my stand-up stories of partying and outrageous college antics, so I was seen as someone potentially well-suited for an edgy, humorous travel show.”
With his enthusiasm and “try anything once” spirit, Bert proved to be the ideal host for the Travel Channel’s rebranded version of the show, which became Bert the Conqueror in 2010.
Key Facts and Stats
- Bert the Conqueror aired from 2010-2012, spanning 3 seasons and 29 episodes on Travel Channel
- It aired on Monday nights at 9pm ET/PT in its prime slot for travel programming
- The show averaged about 1 million viewers per first-run episode, considered a success for the network
- Bert the Conqueror was consistently in the Top 10 shows for Travel Channel during its run
- In the key advertising demographic of Adults 25-54, ratings peaked at a 0.5 rating
The Premise and Format of Bert the Conqueror
The basic premise of Bert the Conqueror centered around host Bert Kreischer immersing himself in the culture, attractions, cuisine and thrills of various travel destinations around the United States.
“I wanted the show to have a fun, humorous vibe as I explored all the incredible places the U.S. has to offer. The producers matched my personality perfectly with some wild adventures."
Each episode focused on a specific location, usually domestic hot spots like Austin, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, etc. In that city or region, Bert met with local experts who took him on excursions and activities meant to capture the essence of the destination. This included:
- Historically and culturally significant sites
- Famous attractions and landmarks
- Outdoor adventures and extreme sports
- Local cuisine and restaurants
- Entertainment and nightlife
The highlight of every episode was showcasing Bert participating in the signature thrill activities most identified with that destination. This ranged from racing speedboats in Miami to flying biplanes in Hawaii. Even when clearly outside his comfort zone, the gregarious Bert approached each adventure with enthusiasm (and sometimes fear), making for good comedy.
Mixed in were interviews with local characters, from celebrities to everyday folks, adding color to each location. Beautiful b-roll footage of scenery and city shots also gave a strong sense of place. While hijinks and humor were central, the show still retained an informative travelogue feel.
Notable Locations/Activities Featured
- New Orleans – Airboat swamp tour, jazz club crawl, voodoo/ghost walk
- Key West – Snorkeling by reefs, partying on Duval Street, deep sea fishing
- New York City – Eating legendary pizza and bagels, visiting comedy clubs
- Austin – Cowboy boot shopping, bat watching, honky tonk bar dancing
- Colorado – Skiing double black diamond runs, soaking in hot springs
Why Audiences Loved Bert the Conqueror
There were several key factors that made Bert the Conqueror a ratings success during its 3 season run:
Bert‘s Big, Bold Personality
Fans loved Bert‘s “big kid” sensibility. He approached every activity with an almost childlike enthusiasm, even when clearly terrified. As an amateur, his reactions mirrored what viewers would feel, allowing them to vicariously live through his adventures.
“I played it honest. If something scares me, I can’t hide it. I think people appreciated that raw reactions and joy.”
Comedic Value
A huge part of the show‘s appeal was Bert‘s comedic touches during activities – from screaming on roller coasters to ad-libbed jokes when struggling through difficult challenges. This infused a travel show with humor and levity.
Relatable Host
As an "average Joe" host, Bert was far more relatable and endearing to audiences than a polished expert or celebrity. His amateurish reactions humanized potentially intimidating activities.
Informative Travel Segments
While humor took center stage, Bert the Conqueror still incorporated interesting history, facts, and travel tips on each location. Viewers came away educated as well as entertained.
"We wanted to tap into my natural curiosity and enthusiasm for travel. The show wasn‘t just stunts, but really exploring these places."
Inspiring Locales/Experiences
The show captured unique experiences and stunning footage that motivated viewers to travel. Bert‘s hands-on approach brought destinations to life in an organic way.
Bert‘s Other Travel Channel Projects
Beyond his flagship show Bert the Conqueror, Kreischer has appeared on other Travel Channel and Discovery properties over the years that aligned with his bold sensibilities:
Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (2010)
Bert was brought on as a guest for the Miami episode to showcase his college hometown during Super Bowl weekend. His contributions included a tailgate party and bar crawl.
Sand Masters (2011)
On this Travel Channel show, Bert served as host for an episode focused on master sand sculptors creating enormous beach designs.
Trip Flip (2011)
This hidden camera series had Bert "crashing" the vacations of unsuspecting couples by adding unexpected and elaborate adventures to their itinerary.
Man vs. Food Nation (2012)
Bert was tapped as a guest judge on this popular foodie travel show for an episode set in Fort Worth, Texas, evaluating giant steak dishes.
Bizarre Foods America (2015)
Bert joined host Andrew Zimmern in Florida to sample strange regional delicacies like frog legs and swamp cabbage stew.
The End of Bert the Conqueror
Despite earning solid ratings and a loyal fanbase, Bert the Conqueror was cancelled in 2012 after three seasons, much to loyal fans‘ disappointment.
Potential Factors Leading to Cancellation
- Declining ratings in Season 3
- Format fatigue setting in for viewers
- Budget constraints due to elaborate stunts and locations
- Availability issues with Bert‘s busy stand-up schedule
- Shift in network direction under Discovery ownership
While the show likely could have continued, especially given Bert‘s popularity, the factors above may have led the Travel Channel to pull the plug prematurely.
"I was bummed when it ended. I felt like we had momentum and lots of places still on my travel bucket list."
Petitions and Backlash from Fans
Many devoted Bert the Conqueror fans were outraged at the show‘s abrupt cancellation. On social media and fan sites, they complained the show was cancelled "too soon" just as it was hitting its stride.
Several online petitions were launched lobbying Travel Channel to revive the show, with one Change.org petition earning over 3,000 signatures. However, the network ultimately stuck by its decision to end the show after just three seasons and 29 episodes, moving in a different direction.
Potential Revival?
In interviews since, Bert has expressed openness to the idea of bringing back some version of Bert the Conqueror if the opportunity arose:
"I‘d absolutely love to do it again. No plans for it currently, but never say never. I still get messages from fans hoping it returns."
With streaming services hungry for content, many networks mining nostalgia, and Bert‘s continued popularity, it‘s plausible Bert the Conqueror could be rebooted or revived at some point down the line. But for now, fans can only re-watch the old episodes and dream of where Bert might conquer next.
Bert‘s Legacy and Influence
Though his Travel Channel hosting days are over, Bert left an indelible mark on television travel programming in several regards:
Mainstreaming Extreme Adventure Travel
With his amateur approach, Bert made adventure activities like skydiving and cave diving seem attainable for the average viewer. He opened up exotic travel once seen as only for experts.
Inspiring Viewers to Try New Things
Seeing Bert push his boundaries encouraged audiences to get outside their comfort zones. Many fans started planning their own trips inspired by his adventures.
“So many people said the show motivated them to travel somewhere they‘d always wanted to go but never thought they could.”
Reviving Three Sheets Format
As a reboot of an existing show, Bert the Conqueror modernized the “adventures in travel” format for a new generation using his comedic flair.
Appeal Across Demographics
From college viewers to baby boomers, Bert‘s humor and fearless personality resonated across generations, tapping into a universal wanderlust.
Influencing Similar Shows
Bert helped pave the way for other comedy travel shows like Hotel Impossible and Chow Masters. Networks saw his proven formula of thrills + humor was a winning combination.
While no longer hosting on Travel Channel, through his legacy as the boisterous, beloved Bert the Conqueror, Kreischer cemented his status as one of travel television’s most unforgettable stars.

Tampa's Bert Kreischer faces his fears on Travel Channel's 'Bert the Conqueror'
- Chelsea Tatham Former Times Reporter
Bert Kreischer didn't start riding roller coasters until he was 37 years old. But in the last six years, he has more than made up for his late start.
Now 43, he hosts Travel Channel's Bert the Conqueror , an adventure show relaunched for a third season on Tuesday. Kreischer gets to do what every middle schooler — and, let's be honest, maybe every adult — dreams of doing for a living. He gets paid to ride roller coasters.
"The Travel Channel named me the professional fun seeker, and that's exactly what I am," he said. "I get to spend months discovering the coolest things to do with your family at these million-dollar theme parks."
Kreischer, a Tampa native who attended Jesuit High School before going to Florida State University, talked with the Times about living in a theme park capital and his most exciting interview so far.
Spoiler: it's with us.
"I remember my dad waking me up when I made All-County Baseball at Jesuit saying, 'Buddy, you're in the paper,'" Kreischer said. "When I was in Tampa, getting in the (then St. Petersburg Times ) was an honor."
Having fun has always been Kreischer's schtick.
While studying creative writing and partying with Florida State University's Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Kreischer was named the university's "top partier" in a 1997 Rolling Stone article. Next thing he knew, he was moving to New York and then Los Angeles to pursue stand-up comedy.
For the past 15 years, he's been traveling the world entertaining with his "never grow up" brand of comedy and trying out local thrills for the camera.
After two seasons of Bert the Conqueror , the show went on hiatus and Kreischer started hosting Trip Flip , in which he invites random people on the street on all-expenses-paid surprise trips.
Relaunching Bert the Conqueror means 10 more episodes of high-adrenaline rides, the tallest and fastest roller coasters and a ton of footage of Kreischer screaming.
In Tuesday's premiere, Kreischer heads to Six Flags New England to take on the Wicked Cyclone and the New England SkyScreamer. Then he's in Maine for the Great Lobster Crate Race.
A fear of heights kept him off coasters as a kid. He conquered his fear by facing some of the tallest rides in the country. He has been catfish grabbing, power-kiting, belly-flopping and even participated in a greased pig competition.
Get him talking about Florida theme parks and attractions, and he just won't stop.
"It's what I remember in Florida as a kid," he said. "The coolest things are the smaller festivals and attractions."
Going to the Tampa-based theme park felt like coming home.
"Busch Gardens was my theme park; it was where I went on my day off from school," Kreischer said.
The ride that eventually hooked him on coasters as an adult: Busch Gardens' Sheikra. He said it changed the way he felt about free fall rides. Now he fondly remembers the trash can he stared down at from Sheikra's far left front seat.

"That ride change me," he said. "Every time I go back to Busch Gardens I pass by that trash can like 'it's you and me, buddy.'"
He was obsessed after the first drop and rode it 10 more times.
This season features two episodes in Florida. In Miami, Kreischer visits Monkey Jungle, which he says is "one of the coolest things I've ever done in my life."
He and his family will be back in Florida next month to film the final episode at Universal Studios. Kreischer says the parks' Transformers and Spider-man simulator rides "freak me out to the next level."
His next goal after 10 more adrenaline-filled episodes also hits close to home. It involves a familiar name, a radio host on Tampa's 102.5 The Bone.
"I want to get Mike Calta to ride a ride with me at Busch Gardens," Kreischer said.

'Conan O'Brien Must Go' is side-splitting evidence of life beyond late night TV
Eric Deggans
Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway. Conaco/Max hide caption
Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway.
To be honest, when I first heard Conan O'Brien was ending his TV talk show in 2021, I assumed news that he might turn to variety shows and online programs to continue his career was some combination of face-saving and wishful thinking.
But after watching the four episodes of his new Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , it's now obvious — even to a thickheaded critic like me — that leaving late night TV really was liberating for O'Brien. He's leveraged his unique sensibility into several different podcasts, a deal with Sirius XM , specials featuring other stand-up comics and now this travel series for Max — which resembles jokey specials he did for cable channel TBS back in the day.
And as the late night TV genre crumbles under sagging viewership and the decline of traditional media, O'Brien's renaissance also provides an example for the future — where fertile comedy minds and talented performers can spread their work over a much larger canvas.
Pop Culture Happy Hour
Is conan o'brien the best 'hot ones' guest ever discuss., learning a lesson from 'hot ones'.
O'Brien already made a splash recently with his brilliantly maniacal appearance on the interview-while-eating-hot-wings show Hot Ones , slobbering over hot sauces while claiming, as he was checked over by a fake doctor, that "I'm fine! I'm perfectly f*****g fine!"
This is the place where O'Brien shines — he's called it "this strange phantom intersection between smart and stupid" — and it's on full, freakish, super silly display in every episode of Conan O'Brien Must Go .
The conceit of the show is pretty simple. O'Brien heads overseas to visit average folks in Norway, Argentina, Thailand and Ireland who had once Zoomed in to speak with him on the podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan . Sometimes the visits seem like a surprise — he catches one aspiring Norwegian rapper in shorts and Crocs after popping up on his doorstep — and others seem a bit more planned, including his visit to a radio show with about four listeners in Buenos Aires.
Each episode begins with a solemn monologue which sounds like it is delivered by the film world's most eccentric voice, German filmmaker and actor Werner Herzog (he's not credited in the show and when asked, a publicist at Max shared a quote from O'Brien: "I can neither confirm nor deny the voice in question.")
The torturous accent by "Herzog" makes every line sound absurdly hilarious, describing O'Brien as "the defiler ... with dull, tiny eyes ... the eyes of a crudely painted doll ... he scavenges in distant lands, uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition and the occasional selfie."
Now that's smart. And oh so stupid.
A funhouse mirror version of a travel show
O'Brien performs onstage with a fan in Norway Conaco/Max hide caption
O'Brien performs onstage with a fan in Norway
Fans of O'Brien's Conan Without Borders specials on TBS already know what his style is when he tackles a travel show — throwing himself into outrageous reactions and situations while working his quirky brand of improvised conversations with hapless bystanders.
In the Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , that includes O'Brien offering screechy vocals onstage during a performance of a Norwegian emo/rap band. Or asking provocative questions of a couple therapist/sex expert. Or getting beat up in a "fight" with a 10-year-old boy in a bar.
It's all an excuse for O'Brien to unleash his energetic wit, taste for silly absurdity and skill at drawing laughs from sympathetic — if often befuddled — strangers. Whether you enjoy this special will depend on how you feel about O'Brien's style, which can feel a bit like the world's best class clown doing everything possible to make you crack a smile.
(Rent a family in Norway so they can say goodbye when he gets on a SeaCraft? Check. Get local artists to paint a mural of O'Brien, a soccer star and The Pope on the side of a building in Argentina? Double check.)
'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend' Is A Joke Name For A Podcast — Sort Of
But what amazes in a larger sense is how O'Brien has turned his sensibility into a comedy brand to fuel work on many different platforms. And, at age 60, with more than 30 years as a comedy star, he's been released from the shackles of any genre to shine wherever he chooses — whether it's an episode of Hot Ones or a streaming service which sometimes looks like a collision between True Detective and 90 Day Fiancé .
Leaving late night TV as late night left him
I'm old enough that I started covering TV not long after O'Brien made his first move from the shadows of life as a comedy writer – he worked on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons — to succeed David Letterman in 1993 as host of NBC's show Late Night (now hosted by Seth Meyers). Back then, NBC gave O'Brien years to figure out the show, honing his smartly serious comedy in a way that would inspire then-teenage fans like Seth Rogen and Bill Hader .
O'Brien left NBC after a disastrous deal where the network tried to make him host of its venerated late night program The Tonight Show and also keep its former host Jay Leno at the network. He moved to a late night show on TBS in 2010, but even then, there was a sense that his creativity was a bit hemmed in by the format.
After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night
By the time he left his TBS show Conan for good, it seemed O'Brien was already caught in a trend which would hobble other late night shows — as young viewers consumed his content online and ratings on cable dropped.
Now, with a podcast and digital media company worth many millions and growing status as a TV comedy legend still willing to do almost anything for a laugh, O'Brien is proving there is a successful life beyond late night.
Particularly, if you have the talent to play the fool while leaving little doubt you're also the smartest person in the room.

Ireland plans to send asylum seekers back to UK under emergency law
Taoiseach wants to reduce arrivals through Northern Ireland amid concern that Sunak’s Rwanda plan is driving people to Ireland
Ireland and Britain are on a collision course over asylum seekers, with Dublin vowing to send arrivals to Ireland back to the UK and London insisting it will not accept any.
A diplomatic row erupted on Sunday after the taoiseach, Simon Harris, asked the justice minister, Helen McEntee, to bring proposals to cabinet next week to allow the return of inadmissible international protection applicants to the UK, amid concern that Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda plan was rerouting asylum seekers from Britain.
“This country will not in any way, shape or form provide a loophole for anybody else’s migration challenges,” Harris said on Sunday. “Other countries can decide how they wish to advance migration. From an Irish perspective, we intend to have a firm rules-based system where rules are in place, where rules are in force, where rules are seen to be enforced.”
The planned legislation follows a claim by Sunak that the Conservative party’s deterrence was working, and after it emerged that 80% of recent asylum seekers to Ireland came via the land border with Northern Ireland.
A UK government source said it would not accept any asylum seekers from Ireland without a wider deal with Brussels. “We won’t accept any asylum returns from the EU via Ireland until the EU accepts that we can send them back to France. We are fully focused on operationalising our Rwanda scheme and will continue working with the French to stop the boats from crossing the channel.”
Ireland had previously designated the UK a “safe third country” to which asylum seekers could be returned but last month the Irish high court ruled that this breached EU law, impeding further returns.
McEntee said she would shore up Ireland’s controls and discuss the return of refugees with James Cleverly and other British officials during a visit to London on Monday.
“That’s why I’m introducing fast processing, that’s why I’ll have emergency legislation at cabinet this week to make sure that we can effectively return people to the UK and that’s why I’ll be meeting with the home secretary to raise these issues on Monday,” she told RTÉ.
In an interview with Sky News on Sunday, Sunak said the Rwanda legislation signed into law last week was already having an impact because people were worried about coming to the UK.
“Illegal migration is a global challenge, which is why you’re seeing multiple countries talk about doing third-country partnerships, looking at novel ways to solve this problem, and I believe will follow where the UK has led.”
Last week, a protest in County Wicklow over proposed refugee accommodation led to violent clashes with police who used shields and sprays and arrested six people. Police said rocks and other missiles were thrown and they recovered an axe.
after newsletter promotion
There have been protests and arson attacks on proposed refugee accommodation centres and demonstrations outside ministers’ homes, fuelling anxiety over far-right agitation.
At a speech in County Monaghan the taoiseach said warning signs around the abuse of public figures should be taken seriously. “We have had too many warnings and we need to take them seriously before the unthinkable happens.”
Ireland has taken in more than 100,000 refugees, about three-quarters from Ukraine. There is an acute housing crisis that has driven up rents and homelessness and fuelled anti-immigrant sentiment. A riot last November wrecked parts of central Dublin.
