Visithalongbay Team

Hello! We are two teachers from Portugal and we would like to book a cruise in the Ha Long Bay region. Ideally, August 15-17, 2024. But there are so many cruises and different bays that we are very confused. We like the Peony Cruise but can be another similar and cheaper. We would like a good cruise, preferably with a pool or jacuzzi, but not too expensive. Best quality/price. 3 days 2 nights. We are leaving from Hanoi, so we need a transfer and at the end of the cruise (August 17th) we want to go to Ninh Binh. What can you suggest to us? Thank you

@Telmo, Thank you for your inquiry. If you prefer more activities and awesome attractions for high viewpoints and photo hunting, Halong Bay is the one. Otherwise, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay are both captivating and perfect for a relaxing vacation.

Peony is one of the best cruises with a competitive price. Besides, you can consider some other options with jacuzzi pool and well-equipped accommodation below: (1) Peony: $560/Deluxe + $18/person/bus one way Hanoi - Halong (2) Mon Cheri: $590/Ocean Suite + $18/person/bus one way Hanoi - Halong (3) Orchid Classic: $590/Suite Balcony + $18/person/bus one way Hanoi - Halong (4) Orchid Trendy: $570/Deluxe Balcony + $18/person/bus one way Hanoi - Halong (5) La Casta: $590/Junior Suite + $15/person/bus one way Hanoi - Halong From Halong to Ninh Binh, you can book the bus at the cost of $20/person/way or a private car at $100/car/way for 2 persons.

Please consider and let us know if you want to process the booking or have any other concerns. Regards, Visithalongbay Team

I am a solo traveller and looking for 2D/1N cruise recommendations in 1st week of June and I have some questions:

1. I am interested in photography, so which area do you recommend? Bai tu long or Lan ha (cruising via Halong bay)? Which area has better views for photography?

2. Are there any 3 or 4 hours tours to Halong bay, e.g. to Titov island, which I can do before starting the cruise to Bai tu long or Lan ha?

3. What time usually the 2D/1N cruise finishes on 2nd day? I have flight at 6pm in the evening and want to know if there is enough time to reach Hanoi airport from Halong area.

Kind Regards, Virat

@Virat, Please find our answers below:

1. Halong, Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long Bay have the same landscape of majestic limestone islands. Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long have more tranquil scenery with poetic beauty. However, if you want to find the best area for photography, you can consider Halong Bay area. There are jaw-dropping attractions with breathtaking views such as Surprise Cave, Titov Islands, Thien Cung Cave, Luon Cave, etc. 2. You can consider Phoenix Day Cruise with 5.5 hour duration and the itinerary to the 3 most signature landmarks Surprise Cave, Luon Cave, and Titov Island. Otherwise, the same itinerary can be found on Ambassador Day Cruise and La Casta Daily Cruise for an 8-hour duration. 3. The 2d/1n cruises usually finish at 11:00 - 12:00 on the 2nd day. It takes you 2.5 hours from the port directly to the airport or 3.5 hours if you return to Hanoi center and take a taxi after that. Therefore, you will have enough time for your flight at 6 pm. Should you need further assistance, feel free to contact us.

Hello, I would like to book a 2 day one night trip on Catherine Cruise for 2 people around early July. I would like to know the costs as well as the itinerary please. Is there a pick up arranged from Hanoi? If so at what time? Is there a return arranged? Is it possible to arrange a return to Ninh Binh rather than Hanoi? Thanks in advance. Kind regards, Clara Lemaitre

@Clara Lemaitre, The rate for 2 day/1 night trip in July starts from US511/Premier Suite for 2 people. The itinerary will include kayaking/sampan boat at Luon Cave, hiking/swimming at Titov Island, and visiting Surprise Cave. You can check more details via: http://tinyurl.com/5n955wm8.

About transfer, we provide a shuttle bus service both from Hanoi to Halong and from Halong to Ninh Binh. The shuttle bus costs US$18/person/way for Hanoi-Halong and US$20/person/way for Halong- Ninh Binh. The pick-up time is 8:15 - 8:45 am in your location in Hanoi Old Quarter.

Please share your travel date so we can check the availability for you. Looking forward to hearing from you.

My husband and I are looking for a cruise in Halong bay (generally speaking) for 3 days/2 nights, from February 6-8. We are looking for beautiful scenery, some active excursions (kayaking, swimming, maybe hiking or biking). We prefer to be more off-the-beaten-path, instead of fighting tourists at the most crowded spots. I am open to less crowded areas like Bai tu long or Lan Ha. Do you have any recommended cruises?

@Felicia Tan, Per your requests, we would like to suggest you some options below: 1. Orchid Classic Cruise: https://www.visithalongbay.com/cruise/orchid-classic-cruise.html - Activities: Visit Trung Trang Cave, swim at Tra Bau and Ba Trai Dao beach, kayak at Ao Ech, and cycle at Viet Hai Village - Rate: $790/Suite Balcony + $36/pax/round trip shuttle bus

2. Genesis Luxury Regal Cruise: https://www.visithalongbay.com/cruise/genesis-luxury-regal-cruises.html - Activities: Take a rowing boat at Dark-Bright Cave, kayak at Tra Bau, cycle at Viet Hai Village, and swim at Ba Trai Dao Beach - Rate: $680/Junior Suite + $30/pax/round trip shuttle bus

3. Peony Cruise: https://www.visithalongbay.com/cruise/peony-cruises.html - Activities: Swim/kayak at Tra Bau, swim at Ba Trai Dao beach, cycle at Viet Hai Village, and visit Trung Trang Cave - Rate: $580/Deluxe Balcony + $30/pax/round trip shuttle bus

Hope one of these works for you. Please consider and let us know if you have further concerns. Regards,

Hello. We’re looking to book a 3D/2N cruise checking in on the 24th of Dec 2023. We would like a 5star boat through Halong Bay that includes Kyaking and night squid fishing. Please advise the availability for this trip. Thank you Deanna N

@Deanna Naphin, Per your request, there are currently some luxury cruises available for 3 days/2 nights as follows: 1. Peony Cruise: https://www.visithalongbay.com/cruise/peony-cruises.html Cost: $560/Deluxe room + $75/pax/peak season surcharge + $36/pax/shuttle bus round trip

2. La Casta Regal: https://www.visithalongbay.com/cruise/la-casta-regal-cruise.html Cost: $590/Junior Suite + $40/pax/peak season surcharge + $30/pax/shuttle bus round trip

3. Erina Cruise: https://www.visithalongbay.com/cruise/erina-cruise.html Cost: $580/Junior Suite + $30/pax/peak season surcharge + $30/pax/shuttle bus round trip

Please take a look and let us know if you are interested in any of them.

Hi, I am interested in a 2 day/1 night cruise of Halong Bay. We are arriving on the Celbrity Solstice to Halong Bay on Wednesday, 1/24/24 at 11:30 am. Is it possible to still make one of the 2 day cruises? Could you please send me some options? Thanks so much!-Lisa Anderson

@Lisa Anderson, Kindly note that most cruises depart at around 12:00 and it takes you 15 minutes from Cai Lan Port to Halong International Port or 20 minutes to Tuan Chau Port. Therefore, it will be best if you can leave the port in 5-10 minutes. Otherwise, you can consider some cruises departing a bit later from 12:15 - 12:30 such as Ambassador Cruise, Essence Grand, Doris Cruise, Erina Cruise.

In case you cannot arrive at the port on time, you can take a speed boat at the cost of around US$100 - 150 to make the trip (personal expense). Regards,

Hello, we don't have the exacts dates, but we are trying to figure out how the tours work. Here is may questions, 1. - The max amount of days is 3 days 2 nights, to you have any tours that are longer like 4 days 3 nights? 2. - At what time does the cruise start and what time does the cruise end? 3. - You can offer 1 day tour, 2 day and 3 day tours, do you have small boat that takes to and from the cruise from the port? 3 . - Do you offer transportation like a 7 passenger private van from Hanoi and back to Hanoi Airport? 4 . - What is your pick up times and drop off times from Hanoi and Hanoi Airport. Thanks in Advance, Ines & Noah

@Ines & Noah, Thank you for your questions. Please find the answers below: 1. Yes. There are up to 5 day/4 night tours in Halong Bay. For 4 day/3 night tours, you can refer to Heritage Binh Chuan Cruise, Stellar of the Seas, Elite of the Seas, or Capella Cruise. 2. The time depends on each cruise's schedule. However, overnight cruises usually depart at 12:00 - 13:00 pm and return at 10:30 - 11:30 am. 3. Some cruises have their own jetty while some don't. As a result, you can walk to the cruise if they have and you will be transferred by a small tender to reach the cruise. 4. We do provide private transfers from Hanoi and back to Hanoi Airport. The rate is around US$250/16-seat van for a group of 7 for 2 day/1 night trip ( The rate may change upon specific schedule and cruise port). 5. For a private transfer, the pick-up time from Hanoi is around 8:30 - 9:00 am. Depending on the disembarkation time of each cruise, the drop-off time at Hanoi Airport after the cruise could be 2 - 3 pm. If you have more concerns, we are happy to help. Regards,

Hi, we will be in Hanoi from Dec 21-29, and would like to do a trip to Halong Bay (our first) during our trip in the form of a 2-day/1-night cruise. Could you make a cruise recommendation (between 200-300 USD/ per adult) that would be good for first-timers to cover the main attractions and suitable for families with 2 young kids? Additionally, as we also need hotel in Hanoi. Are there any cruises that are connected to (family-friendly) hotels in Hanoi to make our trip smoother?

Dear Mr George, You can consider some luxury cruises at your budget such as Catherine, Indochine Premium, Ambassador, Ambassador Signature, Stellar of the Seas, Elite of the Seas, Capella, and Nostalgia Cruise. Among them, Catherine, Indochine Premium, and Ambassador visit Halong Bay while the others visit Lan Ha Bay. All the cruises promise a schedule covering the highlights of the bay. Cruises' shuttle buses pick you up at your accommodation in Hanoi Old Quarter. Hence, you can choose some hotels in this area upon your budget for more convenience. Regards,

Hi, Are you representing all of cruises or several cruises in Halong Bay? I would like to book a room for 3 adults in Dec. 2023. Would you please the name and price of available cruises? Are you offering free pick up and drop off service for any of your cruise? Could you give me information of transportation to Noi bai Airport of the same day? Price and transerring time? I need to book a flight to Ho Chi Minh City on the same day. Thanks and regards

@Kwang woo Nam, (1) We have different price ranges for cost-saving, middle-level, or luxury cruises, so please kindly provide your preference for better suggestions. (2) For transfer, most cruises do not include free pick-up service. The shuttle bus costs from $20-40/pax/round trip. (3) For airport drop-off after the cruise, if you have a tight time, you can book a private car at the cost of $100/4-seat car to go directly from the dock to the airport. If you have plenty of time, you can go back to Hanoi center by bus and then we arrange a 4-seat car to drop you off at the airport for an extra $20/car. Looking forward to hearing from you. Regards,

I want to take a day tour of a cruise on Jan last week from Hanoi and at the same day want to reach Hanoi. And want to visit Sungot Cave and go for a boat ride. Can you tell me the total price for two persons, and which is the best cruise for these and amenities also?

Dear Pragati Singh,

For a day cruise, we would like to suggest you 2 options below which will have a stop at Sung Sot cave:

1. La Casta Daily (https://www.flickr.com/photos/191454442@N03/albums) - Price is $55/person and shuttle bus round trip $30/person - The Departure time is around 9:30AM - 10:00AM

2. Ambassador Day Cruise: Price is $65/person and shuttle bus round trip $30/person - The Departure Time is around 8:30am - 9:00am.

Hi Halong Bay, my name is Stephanie, i am from Malaysia, My husband and i will be travelling in december to hanoi, may i know what are the packages you offer for halong bay cruise for 2 day 1 night. One more question, which routes do you recommend? i saw there are 4 different routes.

Dear Stephanie,

May I know if you are interested in 3 star, 4 star or 5 star cruising so we can recommend you the best cruise? Also, do you have a specific trip date? The period from 22 - 31 December many cruises are fully booked due to peak holiday season.

For your question about cruise routes, there are 3 routes in total including:

  • Halong bay - Recommended if you wish to visit Ti Top Island and Sung Sot cave (the largest cave in Halong bay)
  • Lan Ha Bay & Cat Ba Island - Recommended if you want to see Viet Hai Village (for 3D2N itinerary only) or Dark and Bright Cave.
  • Bai Tu Long Bay - Recommended if you want to go the "off-the-beaten" track where there are very few cruises operating.

We are looking for a 3 days 2 nights cruise in Bai Tu Long Bay or Halong Bay. Departure Date: 3 May 2024, until 5 May 2024. Preferably with a nice room or suite, with extra bed for our 10 yo daughter. So 2 adults and 1 child. We already checked out the high end cruises like Stellar of the Seas and Elite of the Seas. We like the luxury on those boats, but it seems they are too big and not feel very authentic. We also checked out Indochine and Orchid Cruises, but it seems they are all going to the very busy parts of Halong Bay. And also, it seems that after day 1, the boat is going back to pick up new guests. And the boat is always staying in the same area for the night. So we are looking for less big boats, more authentic, but also preferably travelling to more quiet areas of Halong Or Bai tu Long bay. And it would be great if we can travel for 3 full days with the same group, and sleep in different areas instead of the same area with many different boats. Hope you can help us with a nice suggestion and price?

Dear Mr. Rogier,

Thank you for your questions. There are many cruises options that work for your family and May is a deal-season too.  I am sorry that due to local regulations, there are only fixed area that the cruises can dock overnight so there are no cruises that can sleep in two different areas in the same trip. If you prefer a less crowded area, you can consider Bai Tu Long Bay such as Dragon Legend Cruise, which has its own unique 3 day 2 night route and does not return to pier to collect more guests.

A more well-rounded option, in my opinion, is Heritage Cruise Binh Chuan. With 20 cabins and a very different approach to cruising, which focus more indepth experience and story telling, I believe your family will have a memorable time in Halong and Lan Ha Bay Area. Should you need any further assistance please let me know any time!

Hi, my girlfriend and I are looking to take a Luxury Cruise but I am having trouble deciding which one I would like to take. My biggest concerns are cleanliness of room and quality + options of food (I'm lactose intolerant, she's allergic to crustaceans). Our budget is <$200 per person per night. Thanks!

You can refer to the estimated price for a cruise trip in Halong Bay below:

  • The tour price usually excludes the transfer service and some personal expenses such as visa and hotel arrangements, beverages, tips, etc.
  • The shuttle bus cost ranges from US$30 to US$40 per person per round trip and usually remains unchanged in either low or high season.

10. Is Halong Bay cruise worth it?

Certainly, a cruise trip in Halong bay is definitely worth it! Joining a cruise is the best way to experience the best that Halong bay has to offer. Cruises are divided into many categories, either cost-saving or luxury, either daytime or overnight. However, they all bring you closer to nature, give access to landmarks such as caves, islands, beaches, fishing villages,... and offer a bunch of activities to fulfill your experience such as kayaking, swimming, hiking, boating, etc.

FAQ about cruises in Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay & Bai Tu Long Bay

For those seeking a serene and secluded experience with fewer travelers and cruise boats, we highly recommend Bai Tu Long Bay. Alternatively, if you’re looking for adventure and an array of activities such as cycling, trekking, and excellent kayaking spots, Lan Ha Bay is the ideal choice. See the full bay comparison here .

Apart from the variation in size, with Halong Bay being the largest, all three bays offer strikingly similar natural landscapes and a wide range of activities to enjoy. Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay tend to be less crowded with tourists, and Lan Ha Bay provides the added advantage of easy access to Cat Ba Island.

A 1-day tour to Halong Bay can be a worthwhile experience if you have limited time and want to get a glimpse of the stunning scenery and iconic karst formations. It allows you to visit some of the highlights and provides a good impression of the beauty of the bay. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the journey from Hanoi to the harbor can take around 2.5 hours each way, which means a significant portion of the day will be spent on transportation. If you’re seeking a more immersive and relaxed experience, consider opting for a longer cruise duration.

The choice between a 1-night 2-day cruise and a 2-night 3-day cruise depends on your preferences and the level of relaxation you desire. A 1-night 2-day cruise provides sufficient time to explore the stunning scenery and engage in enjoyable activities. However, if you’re looking for a more leisurely experience with ample time to relax and unwind, a 2-night 3-day cruise would be preferable. While it may not offer significantly different scenery, it allows you to have more time to  fully enjoy the serene atmosphere of the bay.

Activities in a cruise itinerary are not mandatory to join. You can just relax on the deck instead and enjoy the views.

All activities mentioned in the cruise itinerary, such as kayaking, cooking classes, and tai-chi sessions, are typically included in the package without any hidden fees. Additionally, all the meals mentioned are also part of the package, except for drinks which may incur additional charges.

However, it’s important to carefully review the cruise itinerary to ensure you have a clear understanding of what is included. If there are any optional activities or services, such as onboard spas, that are not covered by the package, it will be specified in the itinerary. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the transportation between Hanoi and the port is often not included in the cruise package, so you may need to arrange and cover the transportation costs separately.

Due to the presence of islands and cliffs, the water in Halong Bay tends to remain relatively calm, without significant waves. As a result, it is generally not common to experience seasickness while cruising in Halong Bay. Most cruise boats also anchor in sheltered areas for overnight stays.

However, it’s important to note that during storms or adverse weather conditions, there can be increased wave activity which may lead to a slightly rougher sea. In such cases, cruise operators prioritize passenger safety and may choose to cancel or modify the cruise itinerary.

There are alternative menus to suit your dining needs. If you have any dietary restrictions, please let us know so that we can properly prepare for you in advance.

It is recommended to bring the following: sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, insect repellents, swimsuit (in summer) or warm clothes (in winter), original passport and your camera to capture your unforgettable time in Halong Bay. If your itinerary includes a visit to Cat Ba, it’s a good idea to bring good walking shoes.

Tips: You can also bring some candy, cake, books for your children.

It’s not a problem to bring all your stuff, but it may be easier to only bring what you need. If you stay in the same hotel before and after the cruise, we recommend that you leave your large suitcase at the hotel, as you will only be traveling to Halong Bay for 2 or 3 days. All hotels in Hanoi offer this luggage storage service free of charge.

If you have to go directly to the airport or train station after the cruise, you can take your entire luggage with you.

Most cruise operators allow you to bring a reasonable amount of luggage that can fit comfortably in the cabin. However, it is advisable to bring a small to medium-sized suitcase or backpack that is easy to manage and doesn’t take up excessive space in your cabin.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that some cruises may have limited storage space on board, so it’s best to avoid bringing bulky or oversized luggage. If you have larger items or excess luggage, you may need to make arrangements for storage at the cruise departure point or your accommodation in Hanoi.

To travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay, there are several transportation options available. The most common and convenient way is to take a bus provided by the cruise operator, which often includes transfer services from Hanoi Old Quarter directly to the harbor. However, it’s important to note that some cruises may charge an additional fee for the bus transfer, while others may include it in the package.

Alternatively, you can choose to book a comfortable limousine van or arrange for a private transfer to Halong Bay.

Read here a more detailed guide for traveling from Hanoi to Halong Bay .

To travel from Ninh Binh to Halong Bay or vice versa, the most convenient option is to arrange a bus transfer. While most cruises start from Hanoi, it is possible to find bus services that connect Ninh Binh directly to Halong Bay. The journey typically takes around 3 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

If you’re looking to explore both destinations, you may consider our combined tour that includes visits to both Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay and Ninh Binh.

To travel from Sapa to Halong Bay, the most common route is to first make your way to Hanoi. From Sapa, you have several transportation options to reach Hanoi, including buses, cars, or sleeper trains.

Once you arrive in Hanoi, you can then proceed to Halong Bay, which is approximately 170 kilometers away. Most cruises and tour operators in Halong Bay offer transportation services from Hanoi to the bay. You can choose between shared buses or private transfers, depending on your preferences and budget.

Most buses traveling between Hanoi and Halong Bay typically make one stop along the way. The exact stops can vary depending on the bus company and the route they take. Some common stops include rest stops with restroom facilities, food options, and convenience stores where you can stretch your legs, grab a snack, or use the facilities.

When booking a cruise with us, arranging private transfers to or from Halong Bay is convenient and customizable. You can simply indicate your preference for a private transfer, and we will tailor the arrangements to your specific needs. Our private transfers typically include direct pick-up from your hotel in Hanoi or any other location, including Ninh Binh.

Why You Should Visit Halong Bay?

Halong Bay, located in the northeastern region of Vietnam, is a natural wonder that has captured the hearts of travelers from around the world. It’s easy to see why. With its dramatic seascape of thousands of limestone karsts and islets rising majestically from the emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, Halong Bay offers a sight that’s nothing short of breathtaking.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this bay boasts a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural significance. Its geological formations, believed to be over 500 million years old, have given rise to countless legends and stories within Vietnamese folklore, making it a place where nature and myth coexist in harmony.

Steeped in history, Halong Bay’s name itself translates to “Descending Dragon Bay,” and this name hints at the legend surrounding its creation. According to local mythology, the bay was formed when dragons came down from the heavens and spat jewels and jade into the sea, creating a natural fortress to protect the land from invaders.

Beyond its legends, Halong Bay is also home to various indigenous communities, primarily living in floating fishing villages. Guide to Halong Bay, Vietnam: How to Choose the Best Cruise

Halong Bay is a stunningly beautiful bay in Northern Vietnam where over 1,600 islands and islets rise up from the turquoise waters of the South China Sea. Most Vietnam itineraries include a trip to Halong Bay.

As you cruise through the bay in one of the famous ‘junk boats,’ you’ll pass by countless towering limestone rock formations surrounding the luxury cruise ship. The bay was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 and is today one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Vietnam .

The most popular way to explore Halong Bay is to cruise on a ‘junk boat’ which is actually a liveaboard cruise ship. Most junk boats have around 15-20 cabins so the groups are more intimate than what you would normally expect from a cruise ship.

Read on to learn all about when to go, what to pack , and how to choose the right boat for your Halong Bay cruise!

Complete Guide to Halong Bay

How to get to halong bay.

Halong Bay is located about 100 miles east of Hanoi . Transportation to and from the bay is often included in your Halong Bay cruise ship package. They will pick you up from your hotel at around 8:00 in the morning. The standard included transportation package is to ride in a large but comfortable and air-conditioned bus, or you can pay extra for a private car.

There is a brand new highway that has cut the travel time from Hanoi to Halong Bay down to about 2.5 hours. However, it is a toll road and some cut-rate cruise operators will choose to take the old road rather than pay the toll. This adds almost two hours to the time you’ll be sitting in a bus or car so make sure you confirm with your travel agent or cruise operator that you will be taking the new highway.

It’s also possible to travel directly between Halong Bay and  Ninh Bình which will save you some time if you’re planning on visiting both and don’t want to return to Hanoi in-between.

Note: If you book your Halong Bay cruise through Booking.com rather than through a local travel agent, make sure you read the fine print. You may need to pay an additional $25-40 USD per person for a round-trip transfer to/from Hanoi.

When to visit Halong Bay

Choose the Best Halong Bay Cruise: Local Boat

Junk boats operate year-round so you can go on a Halong Bay cruise at any time, as long as you don’t mind a little rain.

The best time to visit is from October until March when temperatures are pleasant and rainfall is light, if at all. Of course, you’ll also have to contend with more crowds during that time and should plan on booking your tour in advance .

April to September is hot and humid and experiences the highest rainfall of the year, with August being the wettest month.

How Many Nights to Spend on a Halong Bay Cruise

Choose the Best Halong Bay Cruise: Sunset

Most Halong Bay cruise itineraries will pick you up in Hanoi at around 8:00 am and get you to the boat around 12:00 pm. You’ll have lunch on the boat, enjoy a few afternoon activities, have dinner, and then you’ll depart the boat the next day around noon if you choose the 2-day/1-night option. This 2-day/1-night cruise option is the most popular way to see Halong Bay.

We opted for the 3-day/2-night Halong Bay cruise option which felt more relaxing as we had an extra night on board and didn’t feel so rushed to unpack and then repack our luggage. We also found that the day 2 activities were far less crowded and rushed so we were able to enjoy them more.

There is also a 2-night option where you’ll spend the second evening at a hotel on Cat Ba Island.

How to Choose the Best Halong Bay Cruise

Choose the Best Halong Bay Cruise: Junk Boat

Do Your Research

Many tourists opt to book their ‘junk boat’ Halong Bay cruise through the many tourist agencies around Hanoi. There are literally dozens of boat options so the tourist agencies will generally only show you their top one or two in order to keep you from getting overwhelmed (or so they say).

Local travel agents can sometimes get you better prices than what you can find online, but before entering a travel agency do some research on Booking and  TripAdvisor  to find the top-rated cruise boats. Then you can compare the rates offered by travel agents against the rates offered online.

Local tour companies are also happy to arrange tours that include both a day in Ninh Bình and an overnight cruise in Halong Bay  which can be a good option to consider if you’re short on time in Northern Vietnam.

If you’re already in Hanoi you can also ask at the reception desk of your hotel as almost all Hanoi hotels offer similar services to travel agencies.

A few things to consider when booking your Halong Bay cruise:

  • How many cabins are on the ship?
  • What is included in your package? Water and other beverages are often an extra charge.
  • What activities are listed?
  • What do the reviews say on Booking.com or Tripadvisor?

Don’t Skimp on your Halong Bay Cruise

You can save a bit of money by choosing a lower-end cruise line or by forgoing a private balcony off your room. And most of the ships do offer a similar schedule of activities so no matter what boat you pick, you’ll get to see the highlights of Halong Bay.

But if you want to really enjoy your time onboard, opt to pay a bit more for a private balcony and a nicer room with more amenities.

Our Halong Bay Cruise Recommendations

A trip to Halong Bay can be an amazing experience, but with many of the boat companies you’ll wind up feeling like you’re simply on a tourist conveyor belt. If you want to make it a true once-in-a-lifetime experience consider these options:

Best Halong Bay Cruises: Peony Cruise

Peony Cruise

Peony Cruises  only recently began sailing in October 2018, so their boats are brand new and state-of-the-art. They’ve incorporated both luxury and style into their immaculate, spacious staterooms. And to top it off, their boats operate in a different area of the bay than most of the other cruises so you’ll have a more unique itinerary with fewer crowds! Sailing with Peony Cruises is a truly amazing experience!

Best Halong Bay Cruises: Athena Elegance Cruise

Athena Elegance Cruise

Athena Elegance Cruise  is a new addition to the Halong Bay cruise ships so you’ll appreciate that the furniture and appliances are free from the wear and tear of other boats. With 3 decks, 21 spacious and luxurious cabins, a rooftop sundeck, coffee lounge, bar, and sauna, you won’t even want to get off of this gorgeous ship to explore the bay!

Best Halong Bay Cruises: Era Cruises

Era Cruises

Era Cruises  is the ultimate in world-class service and style! You’ll forget that you’re even on a boat (aside from the amazing bay views from your private soaking tub). Rooms are huge and elegantly decorated, there is an onboard fitness center and spa, the food is delectable, and you’ll be treated like royalty by the amazing staff.

Best Halong Bay Cruises: La Pinta Cruise

La Pinta Cruise

La Pinta Cruise  has a mission of “safety – elegance – sophistication”, and those words really sum up what to expect from your onboard experience. They offer 16 spacious cabins but the real advantage of La Pinta is that they take a different tour route which will allow you to avoid a lot of the crowds and have a more relaxing Halong Bay experience.

What to Pack for Your Halong Bay Cruise

You’ll need your passport to travel to Halong Bay and your tour guide will ask for it during your bus ride to the area. Be sure you have it in your handbag for easy access rather than stored in your luggage under the bus.

Snacks for the Bus Ride

The bus ride to Halong Bay takes around 2.5 hours and most make one stop at a massive souvenir store. They’ll drop you off on one end and pick you up on the other 30 minutes later. The souvenir store has clean western-style toilets and sells everything from giant Buddha statues to traditional clothing, gold jewelry, and everything in-between.

Everything at these souvenir shops is outrageously expensive, especially the snacks. Think $10 USD for a bag of peanuts. If you think you might get hungry or thirsty during the bus ride, best to pack your snacks rather than wait to buy them there.

Bottled Water

Some of the higher-end boats may provide drinking water while onboard but for many, it is an extra charge. You’ll likely get a bottle on the bus and two in your cabin, but you’ll then have to pay for the rest while on board.

You’ll want to pack a swimsuit both for swimming at Ti Top Island and for kayaking around Halong Bay. Don’t worry about bringing a beach towel. Your cruise ship will provide you with one as you are getting off the boat.

Tennis Shoes with Traction

There are a few reasons that tennis shoes would come in handy during your trip to Halong Bay. You’ll climb a lot of stairs during your visit to Surprise Cave and Ti Top Island (if you choose to visit the lookout) so you’ll find that you are more comfortable in tennis shoes rather than flip flops.

The caves can also be quite slippery after heavy rainfalls, so you’ll appreciate having shoes with some traction. These hiking shoes by Merrell are lightweight, super durable, and have a breathable mesh lining to keep your feet cool.

Sun Protection

You’ll love lounging on the rooftop deck of the cruise ship, soaking in the views of the limestone pillars surrounding you. Some boats have a lot of shady areas while others are full sun. You’ll also probably spend some time kayaking in the hot midday sun. Be sure you have the proper protection for your skin and hair so you don’t get scorched.

You may also want to pack a foldable sun hat for extra protection for your face.

Waterproof Cell Phone Case

If you want to snap a few photos while kayaking around Halong Bay, you’ll want to invest in either a waterproof cellphone case or a waterproof camera. This  universal waterproof case  is inexpensive and super easy to use if you think your phone is in danger of getting splashed.

What NOT to Bring on Your Halong Bay Cruise

Choose the Best Halong Bay Cruise: Boat Ladies Selling Sundries

Every Halong Bay cruise ship includes meals during your stay, but not all include alcohol and other beverages. And while the drinks will certainly cost you more than what you’d expect in Vietnam, they generally aren’t outrageous. Expect to pay about $1 USD for water and soda, $3 USD for juice, $2.50 for beer, and $6 for wine on a moderately priced boat. The fancier the boat, the higher the drink prices of course.

While you may be tempted to bring your own alcohol on board, be aware that most of the boats charge a ‘corkage fee’ for any beverages that you don’t buy on the ship. This includes any drinks from the enterprising local ladies on tiny rowboats cruising around the bay trying to sell various sundries to cruise boat passengers.

Expect to pay an additional ‘corkage fee’ of $20 USD on wine and $1 USD on any beer or soda that you bring with you. At the end of the day, you’ll end up paying the same amount as if you just buy your drinks from the cruise ship bar.

Note: The ‘corkage fee’ doesn’t apply to water, snacks, and souvenirs so if you want to support the locals you can always buy a couple of bottles of water or some trinkets.

Activities Around Halong Bay

Listed below are a few of the most popular activities that are generally included in junk boat tours around Halong Bay. Surprise Cave and Ti Top Island are the two most popular activities and will probably be a part of your visit regardless of how long you stay.

Morning Tai Chi

Most cruise ships offer an early morning relaxing tai chi lesson on the rooftop deck.

Sung Sot “Surprise” Cave

Choose the Best Halong Bay Cruise: Sung Sot ('Surprise') Cave

Sung Sot Cave, also known as “Surprise Cave”, is one of the most popular destinations in Halong Bay, and for good reason. You’ll start by climbing a long set of stairs where you can stop along the way for fantastic views of the bay below. And once inside the cave, you’ll follow the path that winds around the fantastic stalactites and stalagmites. It’s a massive cave that is well-lit and easy to navigate with or without a guide.

Keep in mind that Surprise Cave gets very crowded and would be difficult to access if you have any issues with mobility.

Ti Top Island

Choose the Best Halong Bay Cruise: View from Ti Top Island

Ti Top Island is another major stop along the Halong Bay cruise tour route. You’ll have time to lounge on the beach, swim in the sea, or climb to the lookout high above for the most incredible 360° views of the bay. The stairs to the top are very steep and no doubt you’ll be sweaty and out of breath by the time you reach the top.

This is another crowded spot in the bay. There is a changing area to change into your swimsuit but the toilets are squatty potties so you may want to plan ahead.

Onboard Cooking Class

A “cooking class” may be offered on your last day on the ship. Ours was a brief lesson in rolling rice paper spring rolls. So not EXACTLY cooking, but it was fun anyway.

Me Cung (Maze) Cave

Me Cung Cave has a few different chambers to explore. You’ll get to see the beautiful Maze Lake from an opening in the cave wall and you’ll get to experience the interesting acoustics as you get deeper inside.

You’ll need to either crab walk or crawl through two very small cave openings so if you have trouble with your back or knees this may be challenging. And this cave gets quite slippery after heavy rain so wear those tennis shoes!

Kayaking at Luon Cave and Lake

Choose the Best Halong Bay Cruise: Kayaking in Luon Cave and Lake

This was our favorite activity of our Halong Bay cruise tour experience. You’ll kayak through a cave and into a large lake that is surrounded by massive walls and lush vegetation on all sides. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a monkey along the banks of the lake.

Pearl Farm Visit

Choose the Best Halong Bay Cruise: Pearl Farm. By Wandering Wheatleys

This is a brief trip to a pearl farm where millions of oysters are being manipulated to create unnatural pearls and thousands of oyster shells are being cleaned every month. The tour ends in the incredibly overpriced gift shop.

Alternatives to Taking a Halong Bay Cruise

Choose the Best Halong Bay Cruise: Sunset

If everything described above seems too “touristy” for you, there are other ways to explore this part of Vietnam. You can:

  • Head straight to Cat Ba Island, stay in a hotel there, and arrange a more personalized boat trip around the bay.
  • Pass on Halong Bay and instead choose to explore the less-crowded but also incredibly beautiful Bai Tu Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay.
  • Choose a cruise company that offers an alternative route to Ha Long Bay such as  La Pinta Cruise .

We hope this post helps you to choose a Halong Bay cruise boat that is right for you!

What is Ha Long Bay?

Halong Bay is a beautiful bucket list destination in northern Vietnam. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994, the emerald waters of this large bay are dotted with thousands of small islands.

Limestone rock formations dominate the landscape with hidden caves, dreamy beaches, and lush lagoons adding to the beauty.

The name, Ha Long, translates to “descending dragon”, a nod to the legend of dragons that are believed to have lived in the area.

Despite the popularity among travellers, making the views rather busy, Halong’s magic remains.

A trip here is high up on most people’s Vietnam itineraries, with most opting to take an overnight trip from Hanoi to Halong Bay, or joining an overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay.

How to get to Halong Bay

The Best way to visit Halong Bay is by boat. There’s a whole host of Halong Bay cruise options to choose from, but you first need to get to Halong Bay in order to board a boat.

Tour boats usually leave from a harbour that’s located around a 2-hour drive from Hanoi.

You can opt to travel independently from Hanoi to Halong Bay via the public bus or private car, and then simply join a tour when you arrive. However, most tours include a transfer to and from Hanoi as part of the price.

The transfer to Halong Bay is usually in an air-conditioned minibus and will include a pick-up service from your accommodation in Hanoi.

When you book your Halong Bay cruise, it’s a good idea to check the details of the transfer. Although many of the tours offer a similar itinerary, there can be a difference in the transfer depending on how much you pay.

For example, some of the tours will stop at tourist shops along the way, such as a pearl farm, in the hope that you’ll spend some money.

Different types of Halong Bay cruises

Halong Bay cruises come in all shapes and sizes. From the most basic and budget-friendly, to luxury cruises with private cabins and lavish meals included.

Ha Long Bay day cruise

For those counting the pennies, the day trip cruises are the cheapest option. These day trips begin early in the morning with a pickup from Hanoi and whisk you to the bay.

The itinerary for the day is usually filled with all the same activities as the overnight trips, just on a tighter schedule.

The only real downside is the fact that it can feel very rushed, and you might not feel as if you have enough time to soak up the beautiful scenery.

Ha Long Bay overnight cruise

If you have the time and more money to spend, you could book yourself onto an overnight tour.

The overnight cruises will be much more expensive than the day trips, but the experience of sleeping on a cruise boat in Halong Bay is magical.

The overnight cruises come with a choice of spending either one night and two days, or two nights and three days in Halong .

Ha Long Bay tour mood

There’s also a choice of more adventure-focused ways to explore. Those who want to see a different side of the national park can choose to join a kayak-only tour of the area.

This is a cheaper way to see the sights but also limits the distance you can travel in one day. Some of the cruises can be more focused on partying than experiencing the natural scenery of the area.

If you’re looking to let your hair down during your trip to Halong, it’s a good idea to look up the best party cruises in Halong Bay, so that you’re not disappointed.

No matter what type of cruise you’re looking for, when looking for the best Halong Bay tours, it’s a good idea to read reviews and choose the one which best fits your budget and travel type.

Halong Bay cruise activities

So what do you actually do during a Halong Bay cruise, besides cruising around? Here are some of the most common activities.

Kayaking at Light & Dark cave

Kayaking around is one of the top activates included in a Halong Bay cruise.

Even the Cheapest Halong Bay cruise will usually offer kayaking as part of the itinerary, or as an additional add-on. Kayaking is a super fun way to see the limestone formations and caves such as Light & Dark caves up close.

Visit to Cat Ba Island

The bay is scattered with a collection of islands that are really interesting to explore. The famous Cat Ba islands are the largest in the bay, and are actually home to various communities.

Tours of the island and the villages, such as Viet Hai village, are a great way to learn more about life in the area.

Sunrise tai chi on deck

If you’re lucky enough to be spending the night in Halong Bay, then taking part in onboard activities such as tai chi at sunrise is the ideal way to start the day.

These classes are held on the deck, meaning you can gracefully greet the day surrounded by the serene landscape of Halong. Simply dreamy if you ask me.

Night squid fishing

Fishing has been the main industry for the people who live around the bay for generations. You can get a hands-on experience of fishing in Halong Bay with some overnight cruises.

Night squid fishing is a great way to spend a few hours in the evening, especially if you’re not looking to party.

Visit a fishing farm

Fishing farms are amazing places to visit to learn more about life in the area. These watery villages are where many people live and work alongside their families.

The fish produced in the farms are sold across the region and all over Vietnam.

Swim around the boat and/or at a beach

There’s no better feeling than jumping into the cooling waters of the bay on a warm day. Most, if not all, Halong Bay tours will include the option of swimming around the boat or at one of the area’s beautiful beaches.

Pearl farm visit

Although a bit of a tourist trap, the pearl farms are actually a really interesting way to see how many people make their money in the area. It’s also fascinating to see how pearls are grown and harvested.

This is usually done as a stop on the drive over from Hanoi, as opposed to an organised activity during the cruise.

One of Halong’s most beautiful islands, Ti Top boats a golden sand beach, peaceful waters and amazing views over Halong Bay. Here you can get a great view of the area’s iconic rock formations from above.

Cruise around the bay between the unique limestone formations

Aside from swimming and hanging out on the boat, the main activity when visiting Halong Bay is cruising around the placid waters, passing by the lush islands and eye-catching limestone formations. It’s honestly so beautiful.

Cooking class

One activity usually offered on overnight cruises is taking a cooking class. Learning how to make your favourite Vietnamese dish surrounded by the famous Halong scenery is seriously a moment to remember.

How many days should you spend in Halong Bay?

The amount of time you spend in Halong Bay will depend on a couple of factors.

Halong Bay cruise prices can vary wildly depending on the type of cruise. Travellers with more money to spend can opt for a longer cruise, whereas budget travellers may want to opt for a day trip.

There’s also the time you have to spend in Vietnam overall. If you only have a couple of weeks in the country, then spending more time in Halong may mean you spend less time in other places.

I would say, for most people, the ideal time to spend in Halong Bay is one night and two days.

Is visiting Halong Bay worth it?

Yes. Although super popular, visiting Halong Bay is really worth it. It may be more expensive than other destinations and activities in Vietnam, but it’s a place of stunning natural beauty.

There are lots of fun things to do and places to see. Alongside Ninh Binh , with its stunning Hang Mua Viewpoint , Bai Dinh Pagoda and landscapes, Halong Bay was amongst my favourite places in Vietnam.

If you’re a little worried about the amount of tourists, it might be a good idea to take a look at some of the best Lan Ha Bay cruises, as it’s a good option for a more off-the-beaten-track destination in the same area.

Best time to visit Halong Bay

For the best chance of fine, dry days, October to November is a particularly ideal time to explore Halong Bay. Temperatures are mild and the rain usually stays away.

Visiting anytime between February to April may be cheaper, but it also means that the famous bay won’t look anywhere near as impressive when compared to the dry season as there’s a lot of drizzle and fog (I would know, I visited in March and we were constantly surrounded by grey fog and covered by grey skies).

High season runs between May to September, and sees crowds of domestic tourists also making their way to the region.

What to pack for a Halong Bay cruise

There isn’t really anything specific you need to pack for a Halong Bay cruise, besides the usual travel essentials . But just as a reminder, here are some things you should definitely not forget!

Passport/visa documents: You usually need these to book a Halong Bay cruise in the first place, and you may actually be turned away if you don’t have them with you when you embark. Best to bring just in case.

Raincoat : This is a Southeast Asia essential for wet season travel. Nobody wants to get soaked when you’re out trying to sightsee, or trying to have a luxurious time aboard a boat!

Sunscreen : And when it’s sunny you’ll want sunscreen to protect from sunburn and harmful UV rays.

Sunhat and sunglasses : Same reason as above. It’s not fun getting sunburnt!

Hiking shoes : Some sturdy footwear that you know won’t slip on rocks is a good idea for hiking activities on a Halong Bay cruise.

Water bottle : Many cruises give you complimentary water, but if you have a decently sized refillable bottle of your own, fill that before you come so you have a reserve supply.

Power bank : If you join an overnight cruise you will have sockets to charge in your cabin, but if it’s a day cruise you might not have easy access. So better safe than sorry, you don’t want your phone dying on you as you snap pictures of Halong Bay!

Adapter : There are actually three different plug types used in Vietnam, so it’s best just to get a universal adapter so you’re prepared.

Final thoughts on the best cruises in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

There you have it, the ultimate guide to the best cruises in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam! Have you been to Halong Bay before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

Halong Bay is one of those places that was so high on my travel bucket list , it pretty much inspired my whole trip to Vietnam. So obviously, I did loads of research beforehand to ensure we picked the best cruise.

I don’t know if Aspira Cruise (the company we did our Halong Bay overnight cruise with) is the best, but I can definitely say it was luxurious and thorough.

During our 3-day 2-night cruise we visited all of the main sights in Halong Bay, all while being pampered onboard a luxury cruise ship. Despite the grey weather, it was a great experience.

Similarly to Sapa , the main selling point of Halong Bay is the natural landscape, as opposed to temples and history like in Ninh Binh ( Bich Dong Pagoda is amongst these).

If you want to see a truly unique landscape, formed of imposing limestone formations dotted around a beautiful blue lagoon, then Halong Bay is the place for you.

I hope you found my guide to the best Halong Bay cruises useful, and that it will help you choose the right Halong Bay cruise for you! If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below!

Tips to Help you Choose the Best Cruise for Halong Bay

Let's face it!  There are SO MANY Halong cruises to choose from that it can get totally overwhelming.

To help you, I'm going to outline all the criteria that I was looking for when I chose my first Halong Bay Cruise and then I will share some recommended Halong Bay tours with you.

1. How Long Should the Cruise be?

Halong Bay Day Trip: If you are short on time, you might only be able to enjoy a day cruise on Halong Bay.

Be prepared for a hectic day if you are planning to travel from Hanoi (around 3.5 hour journey one-way).

You can find transfer info here .

Halong Bay Overnight Cruises: You can choose from either a 1 night or 2 night cruise.

The Halong Bay 2 night cruise option is the most popular as it allows you time to enjoy some activities, travel deeper into the quieter areas of the bay, as well as enjoy some down-time.

2. Traditional Halong Bay Junk Boat or Newer Boat?

best cruises in vietnam

Next question is whether you prefer to enjoy the older traditional junk boats or if you love newer and more lux boats.

The Junk Boats are gorgeous, but you need to be prepared for older style boats and smaller rooms.

Our favorite Halong Bay Junk Boat Overnight Cruise is the Indochina Sails Cruise .

If you prefer newer boats with more luxurious spacious rooms that offer terraces and balconies, you might prefer researching a company such as Signature Royal Cruises .

3. Size of Boat and Number of Rooms on Board

Your next consideration is to look at the number of rooms on board.

If you are young and love to party, you will most likely enjoy the larger boats with more people.

But for most of us after relaxation, it would be wise to book a room on a smaller boat.

Our second best selling cruise, the  Aphrodite Cruise  is a nice sized boat with only 17 cabins.

For a much more intimate cruise experience, L Azalee has a 4 person boat available.

4. Included Activities

Look out for 'cheaper' boats that might come across as a bargain, but then charge an arm-and-leg for any activities.

We prefer cruises that offer free water activities such as kayaking.

5. Itineraries

Visit Halong Bay Pearl Farm

Most itineraries of the cruise companies are pretty much the same.

You will typically visit a Pearl Farm, a Fishing Village, a Cave, as well as get the opportunity to climb to the top of TiTov Island and enjoy a bit of swim (typical 2-night itinerary).

The difference in the itinerary is when a cruise company makes the effort to avoid the crowds from the other companies.

Indochina Sails might be an older style boat and rooms might be small, but we always arrived at our sights before and after the crowds.

We were the only group exploring the Cave, we were the only ones in sight kayaking and we enjoyed TiTov island with only a small group of other travellers.

I really appreciated the fact that they went out of their way to give us a more relaxed and peaceful experience.

6. Destinations Included

Everyone knows about Halong Bay, and it is no surprise that over the years this beautiful heritage site has become pretty polluted and littered with trash.

Many travellers leave disappointed after experiencing dirty water and masses of crowds.

Look for a cruise that ventures into both Halong Bay as well as Bai Tu Long Bay.

There are only a few cruise companies that head towards Bai Tu Long Bay, which means that this part of the Heritage Site is still pristine and much less crowded.

I know that both  Indochina Sails  as well as Bhaya Cruises  include both Bays in their itineraries, but you better book way ahead of time as they sell out very quickly!

7.  Which Cruise Company do we Personally Prefer?

I'll be honest with you, our best selling cruises by our readers are both the Pelican Cruises and the Aphrodite Cruises .

They are both great cruises, but we personally love Indochina Sails .

The trick is to find availability on the Indochina Sails Cruise as they are typically booked out way ahead of time.

Watch our video of our time on our Indochina Sails Cruise .

The best time to go to Halong Bay is in Spring ( February to April) and in autumn ( August to October).

We ventured out to Vietnam and the amazing Halong Bay in September and the weather was sunny and beautiful. The temperatures are pleasant and there is not much rain.

However, if you would like to ensure that you visit Halong Bay in the lowest rain season, then you should book your adventure between March and April.

5. Which airport is closest to Halong Bay?

The closest airport to Halong Bay is the Hai Phong Airport.

6. What is the best way to get to Halong Bay from Hanoi?

One of the best ways of how to get to Halong Bay is by bus. You can take a Mini Bus from Gia Lam (Hanoi) to Bai Chay ( Ha Long ) which will cost about $ 6 USD and it will take around 4-5 hours.

We have a full post on how to get from Hanoi to Halong Bay which you can read here .

7. Is it safe to go to Vietnam?

Vietnam is a very safe country to travel in.

Although it is an extremely safe country for holidaymakers, you can expect some degree of hustling by the shop or street vendors.

This is a usual way of sales in the area and it is especially noticeable in large cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, and Nha Trang.

We have traveled throughout the country with ease and we have never felt in danger or otherwise uncomfortable. You can read our full guide on what you should know before traveling to Vietnam here .

8. Can you swim in Halong Bay?

You can definitely swim in Halong Bay, however, the water in the main parts of the bay is pretty polluted.

We did enjoy kayaking and swimming in the clear water of Bai Tu Long Bay (only some cruise boats go here so the water is less polluted – check the reviews above to find a cruise company that ventures into this area).

We also swam in the beach off one of the islands in the bay. The water was definitely murkier there, but it might be due to the rainy weather we had.

9. What is there to do in Halong Bay?

There are loads of things to do in Halong Bay . From caves to explore, kayaking to try out, swimming and hiking. You can also visit a floating fishing village as well as a pearl farm.

We loved climbing up millions of stairs to get a lookout over the area as well.

The cruises also offer classes such as squid fishing, cooking, tai chi and more.

Hi. Nice article. Just one correction. The closest airport to Halong Bay is Hai Phong.

Thanks for the update! 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing Halong Bay. Halong is a must when traveller visit Hanoi. Overnight cruises are good but if you do not have much time so the day trip will be fine. Besides that Ninh Binh will be a good place to visit, being a local i really recommend it.

Yes, I think 2 nights is the perfect length! Ninh Binh is gorgeous too, but also quickly becoming touristy.

For the day cruise, Incredible Asia Journeys Cruise must be a good option with good reviews.

Thanks for the tip Tony 🙂

Now more and more people visit Lan Ha Bay as it is less touristic. Escape Sails Lan Ha Bay Luxury will be good as they use the expressway and Limousine bus/van so travellers have more time on the cruise and less time on bus.

Hi, Which is a goodd cruise for a family of 5 (kids 17, 15 and 11) Thanks

If you have 1 day you can take Escape Sails Luxury Cruise. If you have more than 1 day you can take Vspirit Premier or Perla Dawn Sails. They are all good cruises in Lan Ha Bay – The new trend from 2019 as it is less touristy part of Halong Bay.

We are planning on taking a cruise next February and were thinking of choosing a cruise boat that goes to Bai Tu Long Bay as we have read that it is just as beautiful and interesting as Halong Bay and is less crowded. When I wrote to the cruise company they said that the Bai Tu Long Bay route is now considered to be the more crowded route and they are now directing customers to their Halong Bay route. Have anyone else heard this?

Halong Bay Cruise is the best option for vacation. I like the beauty of Vietnam. It looks so peaceful; everyone must consider this option, especially the rates are very affordable for a two days trip. Anyone, please guide me regarding the starting destination of the next trip and how to reserve a room? Thanks!

Amazing! Thank you for your share. Unluckily, Most of cruises @ Halong now are getting in big trouble due to Covid :((

Yes, it is really heart breaking to see a lot of businesses on pause these days.

Once you arrive to the bay, you’ll receive a safety briefing and hop on your cruise along the magnificent green waters.

As you cruise along between the towering limestone mountains, you’ll be served a delicious lunch! After fueling up, arrive at Surprising Cave where you’ll experience ancient formations of stalagmites and stalactites.

After walking around, step into either a kayak or bamboo boat in Luon Cave, where you’ll see the gorgeous lagoon from a more personal perspective. You can choose to sunbathe on the deck of the boat instead, if you’d like.

Everyone loves visiting Titov Island afterward, complete with a sandy beach and stunning bay views. If you feel up to it, hike up to the top for incomparable panoramic views or take a dip in the waters down below.

4. Halong Bay Deluxe Day Tour

  • Duration: 12 to 13 hours
  • Departure Time: 8:30 am
  • Includes: Air-conditioned vehicle, lunch, all fees and taxes, bottled water, English-speaking guide, kayaking and bamboo boat

Perhaps these tours sound inticing to you, but you’re on a tighter budget. If so, you have to check out the Halong Bay Deluxe Day Tour . You aren’t going to find anything for this level of quality for this great of a deal anywhere else!

Lasting 12 to 13 hours depending on weather, traffic, and other external factors, this is a full day of adventuring and seeing some of the prettiest places in the world. That’s certainly saying a lot, considering how beautiful Vietnam is already.

This tour is another excellent choice for those who are on short trips and want to pack in as much as possible.Start off by getting picked up from your hotel or other accommodations in the Hanoi Old Quarter zone. They’re very punctual and always arrive anywhere from 8:45 to 9:00 am.

You’ll head straight to Halong Bay, where you’ll hop aboard a vessel and cruise through the brilliant green waters to Tuan Chau Island.

The staff will serve you a tasty traditional Vietnamese lunch made with seafood caught fresh right in the area! Munch on as you see famous islets like the Incense Burner Islet, Fighting Cock Islet, Thumb Islet, among others. You’ll then arrive to Surprising Cave, which is the largest and arguably most beautiful in the bay.

After this, paddle around by kayak or bamboo boat at the Luon Cave, where the natural limestone mountains dip low to create a secluded spot that has remained practically untouched for thousands of years.

You’re sure to burn some calories throughout these explorations, so head over to Titop Island and relax on the beautiful beach before partaking in a fun sunset party on the sundeck!

5. Ha Long Bay Cruise Day Tour From Hanoi

  • Duration: 6 to 12 hours
  • Departure: Pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: 8:30 to 9:15, depending on pickup spot
  • Includes: Lunch onboard, restroom on board, all entrance fees & tickets, kayaking & swimming, English speaking guide, round trip shuttle bus from Hanoi to the boat & returns

The Ha Long Bay Cruise Day Tour – Best Selling: Kayaking, Swimming, Hiking & Lunch is another tour comparable to the one we just covered. It’s affordable, it’s customizable, and it covers a lot of landmarks in a short amount of time. Put on your sunscreen and sense of adventure, because you’re in for a real treat with this one!

Just like with the others, you’ll be picked up in the morning from your accommodations. However, the time does depend on where you’ll be picked up from.

If you’re staying in Hanoi Old Quarter, then it’ll be around 8:30 am. If you’re getting picked up from the Tuan Chau Marina Harbour, it’ll be around noon. First stop of the day is the Hanoi Opera House, which was erected by the French colonial administration in the early 1900s.

You’ll then set off to Tuan Chau Marina Harbour where you’ll learn about keeping safe onboard and what you can expect. Cruise along the serene bay which has been carved away over centuries by the wind and water.

See countless series of towering limestone islands and islets emerging intermittently from the sage waters. Arrive to Surprising Cave, which looks like you’ve landed on another planet!

Complete with massive stalactites and stalagmites, it features colored lighting and interesting pathways to add to the experience. After this, visit Titop Island, where you can choose to swim below or climb to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the bay.

No matter what, you’re going to be able to revel in this natural beauty and learn all about the history of this majestic place.

Hanoi Tour Guide

Getting there.

While there are flights that head straight to Hanoi, many visitors opt for an indirect flight routed through Bankok, Singapore, or Hong Kong. This is because the flights are typically much cheaper this way. If you would like to add on a day or two at one of these locations, it’s a great way to see another city/country while saving some money.

There are many airlines that service both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and offer an open-jaw ticket, so you can fly into one and leave from the other. This is perfect if you’re going to stay in other parts of Vietnam aside from Hanoi and Halong Bay.

Prices do vary quite a bit, with July and August, Christmas, and New Year’s typically being the highest.

Getting Around

Hanoi is relatively easy to get around, but the method in which you use depends on your priorities.

Taxis – These are probably the most convenient for most travelers, however, it’s going to cost you. Not only that, but it’s not uncommon for taxi drivers to rip you off if they think you’re a tourist. Of course, Hanoi is a more affordable city but if you’re looking to save then you may want to opt for another method of transport.

Bikes – Bikes are very affordable (around a dollar per day) and easy to rent, but it’s not exactly recommended. Why? Because Hanoi’s drivers don’t exactly follow any kind of law. You’re better off using a motor vehicle yourself.

Motorcycle Taxi Cabs – These are quick and affordable, especially if you aren’t traveling very far. Unlike regular cabs, they don’t come with meters, so make sure to settle on a firm price before hopping on. Oh, and make sure to wear a helmet! If you’re unsure of how much to pay for your journey, it’s best to ask your hotel concierge their opinion and write it down or put it in your phone’s notes.

Cyclo – These fit 1-2 passengers, and are perfect for navigating through the Old Quarter’s narrow streets. It’s more about the experience rather than the transport itself, though.

Bus – Coming in red, white, and yellow, these cover all the famous attractions around the city, along with the Hanoi Train Station. The ticket prices do vary depending on where you’re going, but are more affordable than moto cabs usually.

Walking – This is probably the best way to see the city, if you don’t mind putting in some footwork. There are so many hidden gems around Hanoi – especially in the Old Quarter. This is also the area most pedestrian-friendly, fusing the old and new generations.

Where to Stay

The Old Quarter/Hoan Kiem – If this is your first time in Hanoi, this is where you’re staying. It’s located right in the heart of it all, with accommodations meant to suit any type of budget. Not only that, but some of the biggest attractions and best restaurants are found here.

For a luxury option, check out the Hanoi La Siesta Central Hotel & Spa . For a nice mid-range option, the Hanoi Marvellous Hotel and Spa is a nice choice.

If you’re on a budget, the Hanoi Esplendor Hotel & Spa is a fantastic option.

West Lake/Tay Ho – If nightlife or top-notch gastronomy are a vital part of your travels, we recommend staying in Tay Ho. Luxe hotels, fine dining, and upscale everything is found here. However, don’t be fooled – there are plenty of affordable places to eat and lay your head, too.

We recommend the InterContinental Hanoi West Lake for beautiful views and upscale service. For the best bang for your buck, the Elegant Suites Westlake is fantastic.

Ba Dinh – Are you bringing along the whole family? If so, you’ll appreciate the laidback vibes of Ba Dinh. It’s very walkable, with beautiful botanical gardens, the Truc Bach lake, and gorgeous architecture. While there aren’t quite as many food or nightlife options, it’s easy to access from here.

Our top choice is the Le Jardin Hanoi which is dripping in luxury, has fast internet, delicious breakfasts, car hire, and much more. Located in the peaceful French Quarter, the Anise Hotel is very affordable yet still offers wonderful views and service.

Hai Ba Trung – Are you the type of person who loves an authentic experience, and throws yourself right in the middle of the action? Then check this place out! Located right next to the Old Quarter, you have everything available to you.

We like La Casa Hotel Hanoi for great views, an enclosed plunge pool on the roof, and comfortable rooms.  Save some money with the beautiful Emerald Hotel Hanoi .

Restaurants and Eating Out

  • Bánh Mì 25 – If you look up the best banh mi in the city, this is probably going to be at the top of your results. Despite this, it’s still filled with mostly locals, due to its deliciously-authentic flavors and competitive prices.
  • Bami Bread – These are “Hoi-An-Style” banh mi, which are thinner, crispier, and overall lighter. It’s not as heavy and are perfect for snacking on while venturing around.
  • Pho Gia Truyen Bat Dan – This legendary pho location has been serving up this savory soup since the 60s, with tender meat, delicate flavors, and consistency that makes it a local favorite. No matter what time you go, you’re probably going to encounter a line, but it’s worth the wait.
  • Bun Cha Dac Kim – This is one of the best restaurants for bun cha: a traditional regional dish of grilled fatty pork in a soupy bowl and pickled vegetables with rice. Their crab spring rolls are the perfect side!
  • Bánh Cuon Bà Xuân – Located close to Truc Bach Lake, mostly locals come here and it gets packed. These rice rolls are soft and chewy, and are an excellent snack.
  • La Terrasse Du Metropole – Located in the plush Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, expect delicacies like oysters, French cheeses and cold cuts, streak-frites, coq-au-vin, or even just a coffee. It’s fancy and delicious.
  • Sen 60 Ly Thai – Yet another sophisticated spot, this is a buffet housed in a beautiful neocolonial building. Inside, you’ll find supreme seafood selections like sashimi, crab, escargot, and more.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Hanoi has a vibrant nightlife with varied selections sure to satisfy just about anyone. While it may be known as “conservative’, it’s absolutely not! You just have to know where to go and who to go with.

Dragonfly – This club may not look all that lively on the outside, but once you step inside you’ll realize that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover! With gorgeous lighting and a lively dancefloor, it’s a fun place to smoke shisha, sip a cocktail, or just hang out with friends!

Craft Beer Pub – The name is straightforward enough, as it’s literally a pub that offers craft beer. You’ll find a nice offering of both locally-brewed and imported beer from Europe. If you want to find a place to grab a refreshing beer and watch the big game, this is it.

1900 Le Theatre – This club is housed in a very interesting spot standing on the remains of a burnt-down theater. If you’re looking to dance the night away with mainstream music complete with a DJ, this is it. It gets pretty crowded, so we do recommend coming with at least one other person.

Hair of the Dog – Perhaps you want something less noisy and more casual. The Hair of the Dog is very relaxed and ideal for nice conversation and meeting others. The first floor is for locals while the second is for foreigners.

Standing Bar – Yet another ultra-creative name, here you’ll drink your beer while standing up. Enjoy gorgeous lake views while sipping on one of their 16 types of craft beer, or enjoy some comedy shows on Saturday nights!

88 Lounge – Are you looking for a prime location for date night? 88 Lounge is sophisticated, with garden and sofa lounge environments to sit and chat in all night long.

Savage – This is one of our favorite places, with a great sound system, underground electronic music, and friendly locals.

Oh boy, can Hanoi’s weather get intense. The wet season is muggy, hot, and overcast so air conditioning in vehicles and hotels is a must. However, the dry season is pretty comfortable and clear – albeit a bit humid. Temperatures range from around 50 to 90 degrees throughout the year. You’ll probably want to bring a jacket just in case, no matter what season you visit.

Attractions

Old Town Quarter – We’ve talked quite a bit about this area of the city, but only because it has so much to offer! A maze of alleyways located in the heart of the city, its history spans over 1,000 years. Mixed with medieval architecture and more traditional Vietnamese design, it’s a great way to get to know the local culture.

Here, you can find St. Joseph’s Cathedral constructed in 1886 and is a memento left behind from the French colonial era.

Hoan Kiem Lake – A beautiful, tranquil spot located right on the edge of the Old Town Quarter, it’s a place to stroll around and clear the mind. Head down the red bridge and you’ll see Ngoc Son Temple, which was made in honor of 3 important figures: La To, Van Xuong, and Train Hung Dao.

Temple of Literature – This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful, unique places. Originally constructed as a university in the 11 th -century, Confucianism and literature was taught here at one time.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum – This was once a location of pilgrimage for many Vietnamese. Consisting of many museums and monuments, the mausoleum is a gorgeous marble structure where Ho Chi Minh’s embalmed body sits in a glass display. Whether that’s something interesting or weird is up for debate, but it’s certainly a place where you’ll learn a lot about the country’s history and people.

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology – This museum holds a fantastically large national collection dating back thousands of years in some cases. These meticulously-curated collections consist of countless artifacts and art pieces including intricate carvings, traditional clothing, and more.

Hoa Lo Prison – Yet another construction from the 19 th -century French colonialists, this building was used to keep Vietnamese revolutionaries and essentially anyone else who thought to go against their ruling. Not only that, but many American POWs were kept here during the Vietnam War, including John McCain.

Imperial Citadel – Once the seat of military power in Vietnam, it currently holds the title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not only is the architecture impressive, but there’s a bunker dating from the Vietnam War where interesting artifacts are displayed.

Thailand – While you are over in Vietnam you should take a trip an explore Thailand as well. There are some spectacular places to visit. Be sure to take a tour of the Phi Phi Islands and the famous James Bond Island from the movie, “The Man With The Golden Gun”.

  • Don’t show off expensive gear. This includes cameras (unless you’re taking photos), jewelry, watches, and make sure your wallet is secure and close to you.
  • Keep on top of your visa situation. Many nationalities require a visa in advance to stay for a maximum of 30 days. You can use an online visa agent as well, which could be the easiest way.
  • Plan for traffic. Known for its large quantity of bikers, there’s a lot of traffic and a lot of honking. When on the road, it’s complete lawlessness and chaos, so be prepared. When crossing the road you do need to be assertive but watch out for oncoming traffic.
  • The exchange rate is confusing. Most times, when dealing with money it’s going to be in 6 figures. For example, 100 USD currently equals around 2,340,000 Vietnamese Dong. When you’re paying, it’s easy for someone to rip you off as making mistakes/purposeful errors with notes is also simple when dealing with so many.
  • Don’t drink the tap water. Better yet, don’t drink any water at all unless it’s a sealed bottle of water.

Deluxe Vietnam Aqua Life In 11 Days - 4 Stars and 5 Stars Option - Private Tour

The staff on the tour were all great. The tour guides spoke English very well and made the tours entertaining. The only draw back for the entire tour was the cruises. They became repetitive after the first day for things to see. It would be better adding a day or 2 in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. We enjoyed Hoi An the most and could have used another day there as well.

Southern Vietnam Mekong Delta River Tour from Saigon to Can Tho , Cai Be With Overnight Cruise 5-Day

I have just had an absolute blast riding round the Mekong Delta with my guide Cong . Everything was set up in advance through the owner Mr.Dong, (Whom I had direct access to from conception to completion of the tour) and my guide arrived at my Hotel the evening prior to departure to brief me and say Hello ! The following morning bike and guide arrived bang on time and this set the scene for the following 6 days. Cong showed me round places totally inaccessible for motor vehicles other than motorcycles. A lot of the farms transport their goods directly to the canal network (which is huge) or tributaries of the 2 Mekong rivers. We visited loads of tourists spots too, temples, war memorials. Cong sorted the hotels and food and boat trips, which was brilliant. I ate so much food and drinks I'd never tried before. Having direct access to the farms , be it animal vegetable or fish , everything was fresh - So no deli belly for me ?. So much learnt, so much seen, I took lots of pics and Cong videoed from his go pro and pinged them over to me via WhatsApp in the evenings. I had a couple of bike mechanical problems (nothing major) which were sorted very quickly at local motorcycle mechanics..... having 60,000,000 motorcycles in the country means there is plenty of local help available, which kind of added to the overall experience. Totally recommend the company to anyone wanting to explore Vietnam - just be straight with them about what you're looking to do and they will do whatever it takes to make sure you come away totally satisfied ? Good people. Andy.

Staff excellent. Cabin lovely but situated back of boat and engine noise so loud prevented sleep. Other passengers were warned if this and given a reduced rate. Food and service excellent. Mooring at Phnom Penh for three nights with no view but underside of dock made balcony unusable for almost half of cruise. €1000 refund from Lotus accepted. Tourradar attempt to claim 20% of that disgraceful.

Luxury Cruises to Vietnam

Vietnam cruises with Celebrity show you the many faces of this intriguing country. Ancient temples, incense heavy in the air, contrast with a backdrop of glassy skyscrapers. A constant stream of scooters and motorbikes forms a river of activity through the busy cities, where street food sizzles on roadside stalls. But there’s serenity, too. Historic palaces and ornate pagodas lie in the midst of dense tropical vegetation, while emerald rice paddies reflect the vast sky.

Join a cooking class to prepare fresh, spicy Vietnamese specialties. Take a cycling tour around the enchanting town of Hoi An. See the sheer-sided limestone towers of Halong Bay from a kayak, and delve into modern history in Ho Chi Minh City, with its poignant museums and nearby, the famous Cu Chi Tunnels. You’ll find a dazzling choice of activities and excursions on a luxury cruise to Southeast Asia with Celebrity.

Vietnam Cruise Highlights

Ancient temples.

Vietnam’s countryside is dotted with majestic temples displaying an ageless beauty of bygone cultures. My Son temple complex, near Danang, is one of the most impressive, dedicated to the Hindu god, Shiva. Although the crumbling buildings are partly consumed by tropical greenery, a visit here gives you an insight into the wealth and sophistication of Vietnam’s Cham dynasty. Near Hue, visit the Imperial City, a complex within the walled citadel that was once the seat of Vietnam’s Nguyen rulers.

Dazzling Scenery

When it comes to jaw-dropping natural beauty, Vietnam has it all. Some 1,600 jungly limestone towers are scattered across an often mist-shrouded sea in Halong Bay, where tooth-like mountains are reflected in mirror-calm paddy fields. In the far south, rivers criss-cross the vast maze of the green Mekong Delta, coconut palms lining their banks. You’ll find endless golden beaches, too, especially around Danang, lapped by the warm waters of the South China Sea.

Exciting Cuisine

Vietnamese food is both elegant and unique, and packed with contrasts. Spicy dishes are tempered with fresh herbs and vegetables, while crispy salads are paired with refreshing soups and noodles. During your cruise, you could learn to make classic dishes like crispy spring rolls, stir-fried beef, minty chicken salad, and green papaya salad topped with fresh shrimp. Even if you prefer not to cook, don’t miss a chance to browse Vietnam’s colorful markets and dine in a local restaurant.

Vietnam Cruise Itineraries

Explore the coast of Vietnam on itineraries lasting either 12 or 13 nights. You could sail from Singapore to Tokyo, or between Singapore and Hong Kong in either direction. Ports of call include Ho Chi Minh City; Chan May, for Hue and Danang; the beach resort of Nha Trang; and Halong Bay, gateway to the capital, Hanoi, and magnificent limestone landscapes. Most cruises include an overnight in Halong Bay.

Why cruise to vietnam with celebrity cruises.

Celebrity’s luxurious ships take you along the coast of Vietnam in style. Toast to the end of a thrilling day ashore with cocktails at the al fresco Sunset Bar. Enjoy the flavors of iconic Italian dishes in Tuscan Grille, or specialty coffee and pastries from Café al Bacio. On Solstice-series ships, visit the Lawn Club on the upper deck for relaxing, sunbathing, or a game of croquet. Choose The Retreat for the ultimate in luxury, with access to an exclusive lounge and sundeck, fine dining in Luminae, exclusive to guests of The Retreat, and chic suite accommodation.

A cruise to Vietnam with Celebrity will give you an in-depth insight into this complex and fascinating country, from the buzz of cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City to the intricate, 19th century citadel of Hue and the French colonial architecture of Hanoi. You’ll have time to bask on the sandy beaches of Nha Trang, gaze at the otherworldly scenery of Halong Bay, and indulge in one of the most exciting cuisines in Southeast Asia.

7 amazing cruise itineraries to book in 2024

I don't know about you, but each year, as the weather turns cold, I start daydreaming about getting out of Dodge — or, in my case, Pennsylvania. My mind wanders to cruises that will take me to places where the temperature is warmer, but I also take a hard look at the (exceptionally lengthy) list of places I'm longing to visit.

After digging through what's new for 2024, I've come up with a shortlist of sailings that I think are noteworthy. They range from a standard Bahamas voyage with a new twist and an extended Alaska sailing that includes a foray across the Arctic Circle to more far-flung destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dream on, dear reader, and add these to your list of 2024 cruise itineraries.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Seabourn's 'Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas' itinerary

Last year, the Australia and New Zealand cruise region gained momentum following the pandemic shutdown. In 2024, the hardly populated Australia region of The Kimberley is gaining popularity. Luxury cruise brand Seabourn will be offering a series of six 10-night voyages between Broome and Darwin on expedition vessel Seabourn Pursuit during what will be early winter in the southern hemisphere.

The line's " Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas " will take passengers to places along the coast few passengers are able to visit to see the stunning teal waters and horizontal waterfalls of Talbot Bay, sample wines in the Hunter River Region and check out nature preserves in Wyndham.

Details: The first sailing, from Darwin to Broome, embarks on June 12. The final voyage, from Broome to Darwin, departs on Aug. 1. Prices start from $6,134 per person ($613 per person, per night), double occupancy, for the July 2 cruise. All accommodations are suites with balconies.

Celebrity's 'Best of Japan' and 'Vietnam and Thailand' cruises

The number of voyages in Asia was trending upward notably prior to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought cruising in the region to an extended halt. And it's once again on the rise. Following that curve, Celebrity Cruises will be running new 11- to 13-night Asia sailings in 2024 on two ships — Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Solstice — that bring stops in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand.

What's notable about the offerings is that they will aim to immerse passengers further into the destinations by including overnights in a total of 11 ports across all itineraries. That means more time to explore Hanoi's Old Quarter as the sun sets, indulge in nighttime gastronomy in Hong Kong, visit one of Bangkok's many markets, or learn why Osaka is known for street food.

Details: Celebrity Millennium's " Best of Japan " cruises run from early mid-March to early October. At press time, the least expensive fares — for a 12-night sailing — start from $1,330 per person ($111 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. It travels round-trip from Yokohama and visits Hiroshima, Pusan and other ports, including Osaka, where the ship will overnight.

Celerbrity Solstice's Vietnam and Thailand cruises kick off in mid-January and run through March. The ship will resume them again in the fall of 2024 and run through the winter season. Prices start from $1,255 per person ($105 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. The voyage sails from Hong Kong to Singapore with stops in Da Nang and Koh Samui, plus overnights in Hanoi and Bangkok.

SeaDream's 'Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles' sailing

Here's one to put on your radar if you're looking to book — but not necessarily sail — in 2024. It's a new Mediterranean itinerary that doesn't start up for nearly three more years, in 2026. The SeaDream routing brings stops at seven ports that are rarely visited by cruise passengers. During the seven-night voyages, there will be calls at Primosten, Croatia; Cesme, Turkey; Cetubal, Portugal; and Kythira, Kythnos, Syvota and Tinos, Greece — making these sailings unique and well-suited to anyone who loves the region but who's looking for new places to experience.

SeaDream's small ships, each of which carries just 112 people, are able to reach locales about which passengers on megaships can only fantasize. Couple that with excellent service, and you'll be visiting the Our Lady of Loretto statue in Primosten, touring the Cesme Castle and lounging on stunning Greek beaches from a home base that puts you squarely in the lap of luxury.

Details: An itinerary that includes three of the seven new ports is the 11-night " Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles " itinerary from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, departing on Aug. 8, 2026, on SeaDream I. Prices start from $10,399 per person ($946 per person, per night) for a room with a porthole view.

Holland America's 'Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice' Legendary Voyage

Alaska is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the vastness of untouched wilderness, the wildlife it houses and adventurous pursuits it provides. (Think whale-watching, hiking on glaciers and salmon fishing.) However, Holland America 's Westerdam is hosting a 28-day sailing that's anything but your standard cruise to the Last Frontier .

Passengers will visit the usual Alaska ports, such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, with scenic sailing through the Inside Passage, past Hubbard Glacier and to Glacier Bay. But they can also expect less-common stops at places like Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage (with an overnight) and Homer. Plus, about halfway through, this cruise crosses the Arctic Circle — a rite of passage for many travelers.

Details: Holland America's 28-day " Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice " cruise — one of the line's Legendary Voyages, known for longer durations and a unique mix of port calls — sails June 9-July 7, round-trip from Seattle. Inside cabins start from $5,299 per person (about $189 per person, per night).

Silversea's summertime French Polynesia cruises

Another consideration for future travel is Silversea Cruises , which is featuring its first full-summer season in French Polynesia in 2026. Silver Whisper will offer two immersive itineraries, including overnights, across 17 voyages between April and September.

Passengers can choose seven-night sailings that visit idyllic favorites like Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine and which also include overnights in Bora Bora. Or, they can cruise for twice as long by selecting a 14-night voyage that calls on the same ports as the seven-night option but with Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva, Atuona and Tahuata added.

Details: Silversea's seven-night voyages begin April 6, 2026, and start from $5,650 per person ($808 per person, per night) for an ocean-view cabin.

The line's 14-night sailings start on April 20, 2026. Fares start from $10,450 per person ($747 per person, per night) for ocean-view accommodations.

New Bermuda voyages on Carnival Venezia

Beginning in May of 2025, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Venezia will sail a series of eight four- and five-night cruises to Bermuda from New York. These itineraries are notable because the line is aiming to increase its presence there but also because the style of the ship is new to even most of the brand's most dedicated passengers.

In 2022, Carnival announced its Costa by Carnival concept after revealing it would be transferring ships from its Costa sister brand to the Carnival fleet. Now, when travelers visit the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse or check out the island's renowned pink-sand beaches during a sailing on Carnival Venezia, they can enjoy both the Italian style of the ship and Carnival's fun atmosphere and high service standards.

Details: Voyages kick off on May 22, 2025. Prices start from $429 per person ($108 per person, per night) for an inside cabin on a four-night cruise departing Sept. 18, 2025.

Disney Cruise Line's Lighthouse Point itineraries

Disney Cruise Line 's new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , a private destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is set to open in June with a three-night preview sailing on June 6 aboard Disney Magic. Following the initial voyage, the line will run regular three- to seven-night voyages to Lighthouse Point on Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

The island will feature a dedicated family beach and water play area, an arts and culture pavilion focused on Bahamian culture, 20 family cabanas, an adults-only beach and a selection of shore excursion options.

Details: Prices for itineraries that include Lighthouse Point start from $624 per person ($208 per person, per night) for a three-night cruise on Disney Magic. The cruise departs Nov. 5 and sails from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
