Fabulous leaders and incredible route - pathways along the river or back country roads or cycling through small cute towns. Mostly flat - and very nicely paced with coffee and photo stops, or lunch, or a chateau visit! Only reason this didn’t get excellent from me was some of the hotels could have been better (and their free breakfasts)

There were problems in getting correct tour information from tourradar/Explore and in trying to pay for the tour. Erwin was a very good tour leader, enthusiastic and helpful.

Loire Cycle Path: Wild-romantic all the way to the sea (from Orleans to St-Nazaire)

Fantastic trip. Hotels were tremendous, especially the meal in the hotel in Saint Florent-le-Vieil. Maps were good though I used my app Bikemap.net, to act as a Sat Nav. A couple of hiccups with luggaeew but minor in comparison with holiday organisation. Would certainly recommend.

The luggage was always on site, the hotels so O.k. and the description was good. For the navigation I was glad about the Garmin Navi.

Provence | France | Guided Biketour

I would like to start by saying we had a wonderful time and saw incredible scenery, architecture and ate amazing food. I want to share some feedback that may help you be more successful. First, this was NOT an English tour. It was a German tour where the guides did their best to manage the language issue. Many times, as the English speakers, we were out of the loop. This should have been made clear in advance. Communication overall in advance of the tour was very poor. We were not told that 3 great meals were provided each day. The picnics were AMAZING! But we should have been aware that while lunch was provided it was not included from a cost perspective. Either raise the price and include it or make it clear. All the hotels were excellent except the one in Arles. Really you should skip Arles and replace with Nimes. Arles is a tired town. More opportunity to explore the towns should be built in. ST. Remy in particular deserved some time. The mental hospital would have been of great interest but sadly, we missed it and spent that time at a local Roman site that was a lot less interesting. The Monastery should not be a tour. The ride there is awesome and if the lavender had been in blooming it’s an obvious draw, but the tour is pretty awful. The guides we’re amazing and so we’re our tour mates. They really tried to communicate with us especially after day 2 once we had all bonded but it was hard on them and us. If you want to expand in America I can give you some tips. I have at least 10 friends that want to do this just after following my Facebook feed for the week. Let us help you get a group together, have that group post about it and your American marketing will be off and running! Nikola in particular was a fabulous guide. He made a substantial effort to respond to guests needs- his picnics were incredible. His knowledge of history and interesting facts about everywhere we went really added to the trip. His excellent command of 3 languages was what really made it work. On that note, please include both guides in the dinner budget and add it to the cost of the trip. That seems an unnecessary savings and especially with the language issue it was necessary to have them there at dinner. They picked great restaurants! The multi course dinners every night is a real selling point- you should highlight this in your marketing and communications. Please respond to customer questions in advance in a timely fashion. It’s easy and would have made for a better match between expectation and reality and please provide a suggested packing list. If you like I will send you my suggestions. Provence is stunning. The spring was a great time to go. Weather was perfect and although we didn’t see blooming lavender we saw poppies, iris, wisteria, lilacs and so much more! This was a trio of a lifetime, truly! The e-bikes were a blast! The only way to do it. The equipment was excellent and made it so enjoyable. You really experience the countryside in this way.

Bike Tour, Provence, France (guided groups)

My wife and I have been on four Chain Gang Tours - Loire Valley, Provence, Dordogne, and Devon - and the fact that we've been back for that much return business speaks for itself. All the tours have been brilliant fun, The tours are very nicely planned in terms of routes, taking in a wide array of interesting attractions, from wineries to mushroom caves, chateaux to village pubs (Devon!). The tours are well-organised, with guides who are unfailingly capable, friendly, well-informed, interesting, and great fun. The accommodation is never less than serviceable, and often very good, while the evening meals ranged from good to stunning, some of the best food I've ever enjoyed. The cycling is generally manageable for someone with a reasonable level of fitness and experience of cycling, although some of the Devon tour was a little more demanding (although I gather it may have been changed sine we did it). Overall, the tours have been very much highlights of our years; we've always looked forward to them with eager anticipation, and never been disappointed.

Bike & barge tour Provence and Camargue: from Aigues-Mortes to Avignon

Very good crew who went out of their way to keep us happy and lovely travel companions. Great sights on the bikes and the bikes themselves very good. The boat is very comfortable and the rooms very small ( which we were forewarned). Our guide made sure there were many options both day and night to see extra. I was disappointed she lost people on 2 days, particularly as someone was hurt on one of those days. The food was very good with variety each night. I think everyone was pleased with the trip

My husband and I have taken several cycling vacations and have used different companies. Tours with ExperiencePlus have been the best. The company is family owned and was started by the parents of the current owners. They have been very accommodating. During tours, they offer cultural and historical information on a daily basis, have planned meals highlighting local cuisine, and have included boat rides or other tours to give a broader sense of the area. Safety meetings are always held before the first day of riding on each tour. And, they have chalk arrows!

Overall amazing experience! Met some amazing people and enjoyed some beautiful views. While it was the hottest time of the year, our team had a great support system to ensure everyone was well hydrated. The bikes were nice and sturdy, especially climbing up some of those monstrous hills and the paniers were very handy! I would recommend this trip to anyone looking to enjoy the countryside and south of France!

7 of the Best Cycling Tours in France

From vineyards and valleys to mountains and pretending you’re leading the peloton, France is is cycling heartland that shouldn’t be missed. Here are 7 of the Best Cycling Tours in France:

best cycling tours in france

(Photo: tourradar.com)

France is a cycling country. Known for the world’s biggest bike race, The Tour de France, it is also a land of contrasting regions, including everything from winding picturesque valleys to cols that touch almost 3,000metres in altitude. There are dozens of ways to get to see France by bike, whatever your fitness level or motivation. Here are seven of the best cycling tours in France:

6 Day Classic Climbs of The Alps Cycling Tour in France

A true Colosseum of epic Tour de France battles, the Alps is a cycling destination where the soul of cycling runs deep. The climbs are often longer than the Pyrenees, which tend to be shorter and punchier, and the Alps are undoubtedly one of the most challenging places in the world to ride a bike. This tour’s checklist reads like a who’s who of the Tour’s most difficult stages, taking in the slopes of the Semnoz, the Madeleine, the Croix du Fer, the Glandon, the Telegraph, and the Galibier as you ride south to finish in style at the summit of Alpe d’Huez. Accommodation is a mixture of quaint B&B and alpine chalets as you traverse the mountains. Included is full-ride support from a professional guide team and support vehicle. Fr om € 3,899.

8 Day Cycling Holiday in Grand Brassac, in the Beautiful Dordogne

What makes this tour fairly unique is that it caters for everyone, with well-researched rides ranging from gentle scenic routes to hillier more challenging days in the saddle – you decide. That said, both options should be manageable for the more casual cyclist, this is about having fun rather than KOM hunting on Strava. Situated in the south west of France, The Dordogne is quintessential France, with time capsule villages, truffles, and incredible Bergerac and Bordeaux wines. After a day of cycling, there is a heated pool and onsite sauna to ease away the miles, before enjoying a lovely home-cooked, three-course meal prepared from local produce. From €900.

7 Day Classic Climbs of the Pyreneés Guided Cycling Holiday in France

best cycling tours in france

(Photo: eatsleepcycle.com)

Any avid cycling fan will know that the Tour de France is almost always decided in the Alps or Pyraness. This tour heads to the latter, taking in some of the toughest climbs in Europe, including The Tourmalet, the Peyresourde, the Aspin, the Hautacam, Luz Ardiden and more. As you’ve probably guessed, this is one for the more serious two-wheeler, racking up close to 100km a day on some days – plus plenty of vertical metres – but for those who want a taste of what Pogacar and Vingegaard’s day job looks like it is hard to beat. Seven days and six nights. From € 2,999.

7 Day Cycling Tour of Provence in France

Packed with lavender fields, rolling vineyards and ancient Roman settlements, Provence is one of the most beautiful places on earth, let alone France. A warm Mediterranean climate and empty roads make it perfect for cycling too. However, this ride is not just about pottering through villages and lapping up the spectacular landscapes – there are some real testy climbs involved, not to mention finishing the week with one of the most difficult and infamous ascents in cycling, Mont Ventoux. Beware there are also some big distances to tackle, up to 130km a day, but the organisers make sure it stays relaxed and aimed at intermediate riders. Breakfast and lunch is included but it’s still an expensive tour. From €4,699.

WWII Normandy Tour

best cycling tours in france

For those looking to combine history with the freedom of cycling, this is the tour. It’s worth noting, this is a self-guided tour, so you get a Garmin to lead the way but the organisers are on hand to help personalise the routes each day. Breakfast is included each day as well as two dinners. The tour involves cycling along the beaches where the famous landings took place and through cities full of history, visiting the WWII Memorial, and cycling the Calvados region to the famous Pegasus Memorial and Museum. There is also the chance to visit Bayeux, famous for its 11th century tapestry.  You do get technical and emergency support, but for the price the lack of a guide might be a sticking point. From €2,030.

Alsace by Bike

Alsace can seem quite different to the typical France many visitors imagine. Bordering Switzerland and Germany, it mixes the culture of its neighbours with a distinct Alsation culture, with imposing castles and fairytale villages in the background. This tour takes in Strasbourg and Basel, as well as authentic villages, Baroque castles and Alsation vineyards. Accommodation is in three- and four- star hotels with breakfast included. For anyone looking for a gentler ride packed with culture, arts, and of course wine, it’s a perfect laid-back trip. From EUR 1.330.

Book at bookmundi.com

Loire Valley Cycle

The Loire Valley straddles the line between northern and southern France, packed with (you guessed it) vineyards and chateauxs. This self-guided tour takes eight days and takes a route from the historic city of Blois and back. The trip is all about making it as easy as possible, with a hybrid bike equipped with pannier and repair kit thrown in as well as an emergency hotline if you need assistance. Meals are only breakfasts and the hotels are two- to three-stars, with the option of an upgrade to chateau hotels. From EUR 1,130.

Few countries stir the imagination like France. You may have already pictured yourself bicycling through small villages composed of beautiful stone buildings, quaint cafés, and Romanesque churches that gaze across the valley at each other under the Provençal sun. Perhaps you’ve imagined yourself strolling through the lovely cobblestone streets, or enjoying the local specialties as you fill your senses with the pervading sights and scents of a traditional market. You may have always wanted to look out from atop an impenetrable medieval castle or a luxurious Renaissance château, the entire place resonating with centuries of history, romance and revenge.

Let us help you bring these images alive. At ExperiencePlus! we’ve been leading bicycle and walking tours all over the world since 1972, and we have a number of bicycle tours in France. Travel with us to visit Roman ruins and historic market towns in Provence, explore the royal castles of the Loire Valley, and discover Europe’s best rural cycling roads in the Dordogne River valley. Sample the world’s finest wines in Burgundy and the Côtes du Rhone, and trace Mediterranean history in Corsica. As you experience all of this on our bicycle tours, you’ll enjoy charming and comfortable lodging as well as the wonderful food that draws so many gourmet lovers to France.

The 8 Best Cycling Routes in France

Essentials & Advice | France | By Butterfield & Robinson

We’ve been riding through France for decades and as you can imagine, we’ve learned a thing or two over the years. But knowledge, like life and fine wine, is better shared. That’s why we’re happy to present the eight best cycling routes in France (in no particular order).

1. Burgundy

The hautes côtes and the vallée de l’ouche.

Old World wine regions offer some of the best recreational cycling on the planet; vines tend to thrive in scenic and hilly (but not mountainous) countryside, wine towns tend to be small, un-industrial (no heavy truck traffic) and cultured, and where there is good wine , it’s generally a safe bet you’ll find good food.

Burgundy Biking

Cycling northwest from Beaune into the Ouche Valley is spectacularly beautiful. The landscape (and the riding) on this route is some of the best in Burgundy . Make your way along quiet country roads passing through the villages of Nantoux and Bessey-en-Chaume. The terrain is hilly in parts and quite flat in others, providing a perfect blend for almost any level of cyclist.

End with a loop ride that takes you past wooded valleys and small farms that surround the Abbaye De La Bussiere . Finish by riding up to the magnificent castle of Châteauneuf. This perfectly preserved medieval site dates from the 11th century, and the village is deservedly considered one of the “prettiest villages in France.”

Distance: 44 km Recommended Rider Level:  Enthusiast Best times to ride:  June – September

Route des Vins

As the stretch between Germany and France, the Alsatians have taken words, wines, customs and myths from those who pass through their region either making war or staking claim on the territory. Alsace is the result of countless years of mixing cultures, people and the indomitable character of the Alsatian locals. It’s also one of our favourite regions of France to explore on two wheels.

In Alsace , you have no choice but to ride on winding roads through vineyards and historic towns. Start by heading south from Ottrott to Illhaeusern following the Route des Vins , travelling along small winding roads past countless colourful villages hidden amongst the vines. In Andlau, stop and marvel at the imagination of those who carved the church’s 12thC frieze, and in Mittelbergheim soak up the charm of one of France’s most beautiful villages.

The ride to Illhaeusern takes you through the wilderness of the Grand Reid, a haven for wildlife liberally dotted with ancient Gallic burial mounds. Finish your route at Hôtel des Berges and enjoy a meal at the hotel’s famed 2 Star Michelin restaurant.

Distance: 51 km Recommended Rider Level: Enthusiast Best time to ride: May – September

3. Bordeaux and Dordogne

Due east along the dordogne river.

Prepare yourself for some of France’s best cycling, where the riding is as smooth as a Château Mouton Rothschild . Set out from Saint-Emilion and embark on a day-long traverse to the Bergerac region. Take a quick pit stop in Castillon-la-Bataille, the site of the final Battle of the Hundred Years War ending in the defeat and the final expulsion of the British from Aquitaine. After the short history break, press on and follow the Dordogne River’s meandering banks.

In Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, a town that straddles the departments of the Dordogne and the Gironde, stop for lunch on one of the town’s many terraces. After lunch, the route follows the Route des Vins into the AOC vineyards of Bergerac and Montbazillac, famous for its dessert wine. End with a final push to the top of a hill, and arrive at the Chartreuse du Bignac .

Distance:  73 km Recommended Rider Level:  Recreational Best time to ride:  June – September

4. The Loire Valley

The touraine and vienne river.

The picturesque Loire’s castle-lined routes have long been the playground of kings and queens, and the small country roads are perfect for biking.

Cross through typical Touraine landscapes and pedal along the Indre River towards the village of Azay-le-Rideau. Park your bikes and tour the many châteaux, taking in the Renaissance architecture. Lunch in front of the castle at Côté Cour restaurant is a must. After lunch, cross the Vienne River and arrive at the imposing gates of Château du Rivau for an opportunity to wander at your whim or will through the magnificent gardens.

Distance: 55 km Recommended Rider Level: Recreational Best time to ride:  June – September

5. Provence

Petit lubéron.

We’ve been enjoying every well-trod trail and much-visited town on our Provence Biking trip for decades. On this route, however, we stray outside the region’s hotspots to show you our favourite hidden gems.

Start in the heart of the Petit Lubéron valley. The ride will be like the sea on a strong Mistral day: a flat mirror interrupted by steep (but short) waves. Pass through the spectacular village of Bonnieux before continuing downhill and across a 2,000-year-old Roman bridge ( Pont Julien , pictured below).

After this historical crossing, bike up to the spectacular but hidden village of Goult, in which the main square is filled with inviting cafés and shops teeming with wonderful goods. After a quick stop, ride to an exclusive wine domain, owned by none other than the mayor of Ménerbes: the Domaine Ruffinatto. Finish the route with a short trip back to La Bastide de Marie, Ménerbes.

Distance: 54km Level: Enthusiast Best time to ride: May – September

6. Southwest France

Conques & the lot valley.

This region offers incredible diversity and beautiful scenery along quiet roads that cyclists continue to rave about years after their first ride. Starting in Saint Cirq Lapopie, a small but stunning village, embark on a nearly 100-km journey to the village of Conques. This ride, although long, is arguably the most beautiful route heading upstream of the Lot.

Expect a few steep climbs as you ride on the right side of the river bank. Taking your time on this century ride is highly recommended, there are plenty of small villages along this route that are perfect for a long lunch. Your final stop will be Conques, which is best-known for the relics of Sainte Foy, whose presence has made it a major stop on the Camino de Santiago from the Middle Ages until today.

Distance: 90km Level:  Avid Best time to ride:  May – September

7. Atlantic France

Route du sel on ile de ré.

Ile de Ré is one of the most famous and fashionable islands along the French Atlantic Coast, nestled secretly between Brittany to the north and the vineyards of Bordeaux to the south. This island route on our Atlantic France Biking trip features wonderfully flat biking along the sea on dedicated bike paths.

Riding along the ancient salt road, or Route du Sel, this scenic loop takes you to the top of the island and back. Pedal down virtually untouched villages such as Ars-en-Ré, Saint-Clément des Baleines or La Couarde and continue on to the hidden villages of Loix and Les Portes before looping back to the port city of Saint Martin de Ré.

Distance: 82 km Recommended Rider Level:  Occasional Best time to ride: June – September

8. Normandy

Deauville loop via honfleur.

Though every region of Europe boasts a long history, Normandy has been deeply shaped by two watershed moments that are pillars of European history and culture: the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and the Allied landing on June 6, 1944. Discovering this region is like turning the pages of a history book while riding through lush fields and along white-sand beaches.

Ease into the pace of seaside life on this route. First, ride inland through the famous horse-breeding farms of the area. Deep forests alternate with lush prairie as you descend into Deauville, an elegant resort often called the “Parisian Riviera” for its casino, stately buildings, and annual film festival. There are plenty of options for lunch along the seafront. Continue across the bridge into its sister town Trouville, which preserves the simple fishing village traditions of the coast. Follow the shore back to Honfleur, whose colourful facades inspired the Impressionists.

Distance: 39 km Recommended Rider Level: Enthusiast Best time to ride:  July – August

France's 8 best cycling routes, from Alpine climbs to leisurely wine trails

Aug 5, 2022 • 8 min read

A man cycling in the Burgundy countryside

Cycle rides in France range from challenging mountain climbs to gentle pedals through the countryside © Peter Adams / Getty Images

From the Tour de France cycle race to the pensioner cycling home from a village market with a pannier full of vegetables, the bicycle is as much a part of French life and culture as the baguette and the Eiffel Tower .

There are cycle associations in almost every town, statues of cyclists on roads over Alpine mountain passes, and city bike hire schemes throughout the country. France is a nation that loves le vélo and in every department (district), there are superbly-maintained cycle paths and routes that make cycle touring one of the most enjoyable ways to explore France.

Whether you crave Alpine scenery or a gentle roll through the vineyards of Burgundy, here are some of the best cycle routes in France.

Col de Tourmalet and the Pyrenees

Best for: Yellow jersey wearers and masochists

In 1910, when the first Tour de France competitors crested the Col de Tourmalet, the winner of that stage famously yelled at the event organizers “You’re assassins. Yes, assassins.” That should tell you all that you need to know about this legendary cycle route through the central Pyrenees .

During the grueling 19km (12-mile) climb from Luz Saint-Sauveur to the Col du Tourmalet at 2115m (6939ft), you’ll ascend over 1400m (4593ft) at an average angle of 7.39%. At its steepest point, the route climbs at over 10% – no wonder the climb up to the Col du Tourmalet (and the high-speed descent down) is considered one of the most fearful, yet exciting, stages of the Tour de France race.

The route is closed by snow from late October to late spring, but in summer, hundreds of cyclists set out daily to see if they’ve got what it takes to race up and over the highest road pass in the Pyrenees. And whether you pant up over the course of hours or speed like a cheetah to the top, expect to be blown away by the majesty of the high mountain scenery. Yep, this is one of France's great cycle routes for a very good reason.

When you’ve conquered Tourmalet, consider completing the so-called ‘Circle of Death’ by riding from the Col de Peyresourde to the Col d’Aubisque, an extra 141km (88 miles).

Man on bicycle surrounded by grapevines in autumn colors in Burgundy, France

Burgundy Vineyard Route

Best for: Gourmands, oenophiles and lovers of the good life

Wine, gently rolling countryside carpeted in vineyards, pleasing bike paths, and yet more wine – what’s not to like about the Voie de Vignes (Way of the Vines)? Stretching for 20km (12 miles) between Beaune and Santenay in the Burgundy region of eastern France, this route is all about the gift of the grape.

Start your ride at the École des Vins de Bourgogne (Bourgogne Wine School) where tastings are available – just don’t taste too much, as drink-driving rules also apply to cyclists! Then roll your way towards the Château de Pommard and the Château de Meursault , both of which produce acclaimed wines (okay go on then, one more quick taste…), before wobbling your way into Santenay.

Exploring the Île de Ré

Best for: Families and occasional cyclers

Caressed by salty sea winds, and washed through with oceanic sunlight, the almost pancake-flat Île de Ré lies a short way offshore from La Rochelle on the central Atlantic coast, and it was tailor-made for easy family bike rides. A network of well-maintained cycle paths scribble across the island – any route you chose is pretty much guaranteed to include lazy cycling alongside long, sandy beaches, through beautiful villages and past small seaside towns where you can stop to refuel with a seafood lunch.

There’s nothing remotely grueling about cycling around the Île de Ré. Instead, it’s simple pleasure after simple pleasure. Although there are numerous routes around the island, we highly recommend the loop from the tiny village of Ars-en-Ré, up to the dramatic lookout point Phare des Baleines (Lighthouse of the Whales) and then east to the saltpans (the island is famed for its salt) around Les Ports-en-Ré.

A family cycling in the countryside in Provence, France

Leisurely rides in The Luberon (Provence)

Best for: Cycle tourers

The Luberon is the picture book image of southern France. The inspiration for a thousand novels, films and paintings, this inland region of Provence with its sun-soaked olive groves, vineyards, and fields of startlingly bright lavender plants, is dotted with gorgeous hilltop villages built from honey-colored rock, linked to one another via quiet country roads and superb cycle paths.

There’s a fair bit of up and down to riding here – and in summer the weather can be as hot as a furnace – but most people are so bowled over by the beauty of the countryside that they don’t really notice the hard work they’re putting in. There are all sorts of routes to be pedaled here – some are easy family-friendly affairs, while others, including a complete 236km (147-mile) circuit of the region, are far more challenging.

The Canal du Midi Cycle Path

Best for: First-time cycle tourers and history buffs

Cycling alongside southern France’s Canal du Midi involves passing a roll call of fortified towns, crumbling castles, avenues of stately plane trees and quiet villages. And the Canal du Midi isn’t just about good looks, it’s also heavy in history. This is both the oldest canal in Europe and the first canal in the world to use a system of locks to allow boats to easily cover its length. Fun fact: The inventor of the canal locks was none other than Leonardo da Vinci, who spent the last years of his life in France.

The Canal du Midi is generally flat and easy to cycle, with lots of bike-friendly tourist facilities along the way. In other words, it’s pretty much the dream cycle route. Officially, the Canal du Midi cycle path runs from Toulouse all the way to the shimmering Mediterranean Sea at Sète some 240km (149 miles) away. Most people skip the first bit of the route and instead begin their adventure in the fairy-tale, fortified town of Carcassonne . This means four days of steady peddling before you can don your swimsuit and dive into the sea at the route’s end.

Bikers bicycle touring near Chambord Castle in the Loire Valley, France

The Loire Valley

Best for: History buffs and anyone who’s ever got on a bicycle

Loire à Vélo (Loire by bicycle) was the first official, way-marked long-distance cycle route in France. Following the River Loire, from its birthplace in the icy heights of the Massif Central to its union with the ocean on the Atlantic seaboard, the route streams through 900km (560 miles) of classic French scenery.

Completing the whole tour might be a bit much for the average cyclist, but take on the 100km (62-mile) stretch through the Touraine region and you'll hit the highlights of the route in a few lazy days of cycling. This is the heart of French châteaux country, and along the way, lucky bikers will roll alongside glories such as Amboise , Tours and Chinon.

The beauty of the main Loire Valley route is that you can also happily ignore it and take any number of side cycle trails to other châteaux and attractive towns and villages. Tourist offices can advise on trails suitable for everyone from seasoned cyclers to first-time pedalers.

Véloroute Vallée de Somme

Best for: Anyone interested in WWI history

The Somme – the very name immediately brings forth images of the waste and destruction of WWI and the notorious Battle of the Somme. And true enough, this 160km (99-mile) cycle route along the banks of the River Somme does pass by many sad reminders of one of the darkest moments in human history. It's as much a pilgrimage as a cycling holiday.

But, here’s the thing: The Somme is no longer a place of tears. Alongside the war memorials, what you’ll remember from this bike ride are the wide open spaces at the mouth of the Somme, marshes and lakes ringing to the call of birds, ancient archaeological sites and the joy of cycling right up to the gates of the cathedral in Amiens . It’s one of the finest rides in northern France.

There are plenty of towns and villages to rest up in along the way and the route is largely level, following a well-maintained cycle path, which means this is one long-distance route that almost anyone can take on.

A mountain biker rides a trail on a ridge near Les Arcs in the French Alps

Col de la Loze in the French Alps

Best for: Cyclists with legs of steel

With spectacular mountain vistas and soaring and tumbling roads that rise up and over numerous high passes, the French Alps is one of the world’s great cycle destinations. But the rewards don’t come easy here and most Alpine routes are not for first-time cyclists, though there are endless biking possibilities for experienced riders.

Perhaps the most famed are the routes up to and down from the 2304m (7560ft) Col de la Loze in the Les 3 Vallées region. There are four different cycle routes of varying lengths that take in the pass, and an even longer and more challenging 3 Vallées circuit is currently under construction. The principal route to the top involves a grinding 7km (4.3-mile) climb – sometimes at an angle of 23% – from 1673m to a high of 2304m.

My buddy wished for extra battery charge at the end of the long days. Get fit first! And he had a breakdown (buckled wheel) and despite a 2 hour wait, the service was excellent and we had good cheese & bread & wine to assist with the wait!" L.Ridgway, Australia.

Rhone Cycle Path: Haute-Savoie to Lyon

Pretty scenery along the Rhone River cycleway in the Savoy region

Explore the Rhone Cycle Path, a cycle route that's almost flat (great for first time cyclists!). Over 6 days, this route takes you from Seyssel to Lyon and shows off an extraordinary alpine backdrop as well as rolling vineyards.

Here's what S. Kinoshita from Australia had to say about this tour:

"We are a couple in our early 60s and we hugely enjoyed the Rhone cycle path (Seyssels to Lyon, 6 days). With e-bikes, riding 60 km/day is not difficult. There were some challenges e.g., riding through tunnels with car traffic, and big roundabouts with trucks, but with enough caution they can be negotiated even by a novice cyclist like myself, and gives an element of adventure. Most of the time you are on Via Rhona cycle path which is well-sign posted, or country roads, with very pretty scenery. Riding into Lyon and along the riverside cycleway is a very nice introduction to this city. We would be happy to recommend the trip."

Superb riding.

Why cycling in Nice? Routes are varied, and the scenery is mind-blowing: think shimmering azure blue coastline and Alpine foothills that rise quickly from the coast. There are more than enough long hard climbs to test your form and, just like Mallorca, there are some crazy feats of road engineering.

Col de Vence , Col de La Madone , Col de Braus and Col de Turini are some of the region’s big names, but there are any number of fantastic lesser-known climbs and roads. Many have cycling pedigree thanks to the Tour de France, the Paris to Nice “Race to the Sun” and Nice Ironman.

The mild, sunny climate and rain shadow of the Alps, mean the weather is generally good, and most roads are open year-around. Even in winter, you can ride up to around the 1,000 metre mark, which means Col de Vence, Col de la Madone and Col de Braus should be do-able even then.

Pro endorsement

The area was home to one infamous Texan and Trek still name their flagship aero bike after the Col de la Madone. We ran into pro cyclists both on and off the bike during our Easter-time visit to Nice.

Ian Boswell estimated that there are 40 World Tour riders in Monaco and another 25 in Nice. Chris Froome bases himself in Monaco and Team Sky established a performance centre here as early as 2014. It just goes to show how many boxes Nice ticks for road cyclists, and endorses Nice cycling routes as among the very best.

Easy to get to

One of the things we most love about biking in Nice is how easy it is to get there and how quickly you can get out there. Nice is well served by regular flights from most destinations, and it’s a noticeably shorter flight from northern Europe than the Balearics or Canaries.

With the airport just 9 km from the centre of Nice, it’s a very short bus, train, Uber or taxi ride into the city centre. There are even bike stands in the baggage reclaim hall, so you could build your bike and ride into town before you even get to tackling some of the cycling routes in Nice. This all makes Nice a dream to get to, and even realistic if you live elsewhere in Northern Europe and only have a long weekend.

More than just cycling (shock!)

A bike trip to Nice in France has so much more to offer. If you’re looking for a cycling destination with culture and soul, Nice is perfect. This is no tourist shell that only comes alive in season or when the cyclists arrive. Nice is a bona fide, thriving city with superb food, culture and nightlife. The old town is an authentic maze of tiny streets, dotted with butchers, bars, restaurants, art shops, spice sellers and every other local artisan you could imagine. There is a thriving market of local produce and the Promenade des Anglais brings together all walks of life, as well as offering an excellent bike path that is a good option even for serious cyclists (more on that, here).

In Nice port, you’ll find the Café du Cycliste, a mecca for local and visiting cyclists. You can hire a bike, drink excellent coffee or go on a weekend guided shop ride. Their website gives great inspiration, and we found it excellent for planning our itinerary.

If you haven’t done so yet, you really should try to cycle Nice. If you have, you’ll undoubtedly be keen to get back there!

Cycling routes: Nice and Côte d’Azur

The cycling around Nice is brilliant, particularly if you like hills.

For us, a bike trip to Nice is all about discovering the tiny, quiet, winding roads that rise out of busy seaside towns straight into rocky hairpins, flanked by ancient perched villages in pastel colours.

When you’re planning your rides, the geography is relatively simple. Here are some pointers:

The Mediterranean – obviously! Ideal for exploring coastal Nice by road bike.

A bike path and busy roads until Cannes, after which you get into the Esterel National Nark.

Our Nice to Cannes and Esterel loop rides give full information.

The famous three Corniche roads take you to Monaco, Menton and on into Italy. They’re all sheer rock faces, impressive villas and sparkling sea.

If you’re after easier cycling on the Cote d’Azur, choosing to ride alonfg one of the Corniche roads is a good option. There’s less climbing, but you still get amazing views.

Our Col de Braus route includes the Basse Corniche, our Col de Turini route includes  Moyenne Corniche, and our Col de Madone route includes the Grande Corniche.

Away from cycling the French  Riviera, there’s the mountains. Access them via the two river valleys out of town: the Var and the Paillon, with busy arterial roads (and cycle paths).

Our routes tend to head out east or west, and then return from the North. We avoid the cycle paths heading north in favour of quieter roads further away from the arterial roads, but see what you think of the Col de Vence and Col de Madone route .

The map below overlays our route suggestions for cycling in Nice, France. Below the map are links to a guide about each route.

Family cycle routes around Nice

Nice and Cote d’Azur cycling is not ideal for a family holiday with young children, since most of the rides involve climbing and/or perilous drop-offs.

However, the cycle path along the Promenade des Anglais is a good option for a one-off ride.

You can hire kids’ bikes, leisure bikes with kids’ seats, skateboards and scooters from Roller Station at the eastern end of the Promenade des Anglais, close to the Castle (49 Quai des États-Unis). Our 2 and 5-year-old had a fantastic time pootling up and down the bike path for a couple of hours.

Tips for cycling Nice

We love to stay in central Nice, for its ambience and restaurants, but as with any city-based holiday, you’ll have to accept a bit of slogging through traffic to reach the most amazing riding. Also be aware of the slightly freestyle driving habits of the locals… short-notice turns, no indicators and crazy car parking are standard. As ever, we recommend getting up early to avoid the worst of the traffic.

Once you’re out of the city centre, biking in Nice is incredible.

Make sure you read our 15 cycling tips for Nice before you go.

If you’re looking to book a cycling tour/guiding from Nice, read this article .

Accommodation

While many other cycling destinations are focused on resorts areas or small towns, Nice is a bustling city. This means there is a wide range of accommodation options: from hotels to self-catering apartments.

Some people decide to stay in the small towns surrounding Nice (think Villefranche-sur-Mer, Menton, Vence, Contes or Carros). However, we love the ease of getting an apartment in the centre of the city and riding straight from there. There’s no hassle with airport transfers and you’ve got hundreds of bars and restaurants right on your doorstep (if you’re feeling really lazy, there’s even Deliveroo)! Plus it’s great for culture and for keeping kids entertained if you’re with the family.

One word of warning if you decide to go for a city centre apartment: lots of the buildings in Nice are five or six storeys with no elevator. Make sure that you don’t end up on the top floor with just a narrow staircase for access – not nice after a long day in the saddle and far from the ideal end to any Nice bike ride.

Remember to double-check accommodation bike storage arrangements (and any other services you need) before booking as policies often change.

Our choice: 2 bedroom apartment on Place Garibaldi

This airy, spacious two bedroom apartment has a brilliant location, on the Place Garibaldi in central Nice. The 18th Century building has lofty ceilings and huge shuttered windows. You’re in the thick of it, with the port five minutes walk in one direction and the Promenade du Paillon (aka La Coulée Verte) five minutes walk in the other.

What we loved

  • The location. It’s difficult to think of a better place to base yourself in Nice. You’re right on the Place Garibaldi with its wide open space, bars, restaurants, supermarket and bus/tube links. You can easily get out of Nice via the Corniche roads near the port 2 minutes ride away. It’s 5-10 minutes on the tram to the Promenade des Anglais and 2 minutes walk into the Vieux Ville (old town).
  • Grand architecture for the 21st Century. Despite being in a centuries-old building in a city centre, you shut the windows, and the double glazing does its job. We didn’t try out the air con, but in summer we imagine that would be welcome to avoid having to open the windows at night.
  • White, bright and spacious. The sitting room is the star of the show. It’s a large room with two enormous windows. Painted white, with white sofas and white upholstered dining chairs, it feels fresh and smart. All the rooms are large, and the height of the ceilings lends grandeur and style.
  • Car parking space. Parking in Nice is a nightmare, so a car parking space is a great luxury. Be aware that it’s a few hundred metres from the apartment and uses a stacking system.

Sitting room in an apartment in Place Garibaldi

Things to be aware of

  • When we visited, a tube station was being built next door to the apartment block. The work began around 7 am each day and, unsurprisingly, was very noisy, even with the windows shut. If you are sensitive to noise or like to lie in, you may wish to check the work has finished before staying.
  • There are a few nice antique armoires and original doors, but the furniture otherwise feels inexpensive. The white palate and original features make up for this in some part, but make sure your expectations are realistic.
  • The bed in the master room is a small double. A strange decision by the owners, given the immense size of the room.
  • When we visited, there was no smoke detector in the apartment.

This is a charming old apartment on the memorable Place Garibaldi. It’s very well placed for cycling out from Nice as well as Nice’s other many great attractions.

Nice hotels

Palais saleya.

The boutique Palais Saleya is a stylish four-star hotel which guests rave about. If we’re looking for a hotel on our next trip to Nice, this is where we’ll stay.

The hotel is housed in a beautiful 18th Century building and was re-fitted around 2017. Its 26 suites and apartments are sparkling and gorgeous in a contemporary chic style.

  • Fabulous location at the entrance to the old town.
  • Each suite/apartment has a well-equipped kitchen, with items like a microwave, Nespresso machine and washing machine.
  • Breakfast is room-service at an additional charge.
  • Tip: we were advised that guests can either keep their bike in their room, or have a maximum of two bikes stored at reception.

Hyatt Regency

The Hyatt Regency is a traditional, iconic, 5-star hotel on the Promenade des Anglais. 187 rooms with views over the terrace and pool or the sea.

  • The hotel has a well-regarded restaurant with sea-facing terrace.
  • The outdoor pool also has a view over the sea. The indoor pool looks out over the Bay of Angels. These are leisure pools rather than pools that would be of interest to a triathlete.
  • Tip: we were advised that there is a secure bike storage room with staff access only. A guest may only keep their bike in their room if the bike is packed.

Malmaison Nice

Malmaison Nice is a four-star, 1920s Art Deco-inspired hotel, a few blocks back from the Promenade des Anglais and west of the old town.

  • Many of the 46 rooms have balconies overlooking the terracotta rooftops of Nice.
  • Guests appreciate the free smartphone provided with the room, which can be used both within and outside of the hotel.
  • Buffet breakfast available at an additional charge.
  • Tip: we were advised that there is a secure basement that is kept locked and has staff access only.

Villa Victoria

Villa Victoria is a four-star hotel in a pretty, shuttered building. It’s lovely garden to the rear of the property is a real feature.

  • Good location a few blocks from the Promenade des Anglais.
  • Bedrooms are traditionally decorated.
  • Tip: we were advised that a guest can either keep their road bike in their room or their luggage room.

There are lots of bike shops and options for bike rental in Nice, ranging from the public Vélo Blue scheme, to top end Pinarello hire.

We used Café du Cycliste for our bike hire in Nice – and had the added bonus of Team Dimension Data rider Scott Davies doing the set up (a fluke – he’s not an employee!). They seemed relaxed about hire terms, allowing us to take the bike the night before to maximise ride time. All in all, a good experience that we’d recommend to friends.

There’s more information about bike rental in Nice in this article (see part 2 of the article).

Prices, services and bike brands often change. Please let us know if anything is incorrect.

Other options for bicycle rental in Nice

For children’s bikes for use on the Promenade des Anglais, we found Roller Station (49, Quai des Etats-Unis) very convenient. They have everything from small kids bikes to rollerblades and skateboards and are directly on the Promenade des Anglais, near the Castle.

If you’re after adult city bikes, consider using the Velo Blue scheme . Alternatively, there’s Holland Bikes or My Urban Motion if electric scooters and skateboards are your thing.

If you’re staying to the west of the Var river, Golden Cycles in Juan les Pins is a good option.

  • Book your bike in advance, particularly in peak season.
  • Remember to bring your pedals, shoes and helmet. This packing list may help!
  • Check which way around your brakes are set before you ride away (i.e. whether the front brakes are on the right hand (as is usual in the UK) or on the left (as is usual elsewhere in Europe)). Also, take a look at our list of things to check before hiring a bike .

Undecided on whether to hire a bike or bring your own?  Read this now.

The weather in Nice and the Côte d’Azur is normally temperate all year around. The roads described in our cycling routes section are generally open all year around: even the Col de Turini (though we don’t suggest doing it before May- when we rode in this part of the Cote d’Azur in April, it was cold with considerable snow towards the top, and not as fun as it should have been!).

Between mid-March and mid-October, it’s likely to be warm and settled, though we would recommend avoiding July and August if possible for riding a bicycle in Nice, due to it being the height of the Mediterranean holiday season. The quantity of traffic along the coast roads is unlikely to make cycling much fun.

You may want to time your trip to coincide with one of the most famous stage races in the world: the Paris-Nice. It arrives in March and is a great opportunity to see some early season World Tour racing. While you’re there, how about pitting yourself against the Paris-Nice Challenge Sportive?

Getting around Nice and the Côte d’Azur

You don’t need a car for a cycling holiday in Nice – many riders get a taxi (or Uber), hotel transfer or the excellent tram and base themselves at their accommodation for their trip. But having a rental car opens lots of options for family, shopping, dining, rest days, a support vehicle, recceing new routes and non-cycling friends/partners. Try to avoid peak times as traffic can be busy in the narrow streets of central Nice.

Use the search box below to search, compare and book the best car rental deal for your trip.

Highway code and travel information

As ever, it’s a good idea to check current travel information before you book and travel. For UK visitors, the UK government travel information pages for France are here.

You should also read and follow France’s highway code.

We used the Insights Guide to Nice and the French Riviera , which was informative.

The Wallpaper guide to Nice had not been published at the time we visited Nice, but when we next visit, we’ll definitely get a copy.

While in Nice, we bought two books:

  • Alpes Maritimes: 35 parcours velo de route  it has route directions and a map extract for each route, with a short description of the route. It’s in French and English, and this means there’s little room for detail. We’re clearly biased, but our guides are better (and free)!
  • Nice – Carnet d’addresses précieux/A precious city guide. It’s not available for sale on Amazon, but it’s a lovely little book and worth buying if you see it while you’re in the city (we got ours at Café du Cycliste). It’s a subjective guide to 74 different places in the city. It’s printed on gorgeous textured paper, and each page has a hand-drawn colour sketch of the place, with a short description in French and English and the essential details. In a big city it’s difficult to know the best places to eat, drink and visit and what you need is personal recommendation. That’s exactly the tone this guide takes, and it helped us out a lot.

If you’re looking for a cycling map of the Cote d’Azure and Alpes-Maritimes, this is a good bet: 1:150,000 and it shows cycle paths too: Alpes-Maritimes Michelin map

Food and drink

Don’t miss the coffee in Café du Cycliste. It’s excellent.

One of Nice’s speciality foods is socca, a thin pancake made of chickpea flour. It’s crispy on the outside and soft inside. You can perch at small tables at Chez Pipo and munch it with your fingers while drinking a cold beer.

Another speciality of Nice is pissaladière. It’s a thin bread topped with onion, anchovies and olives. You can find it in most boulangeries, and it’s delicious!

The best boulangerie in Nice?

Playgrounds

If you’re with kids, there are two particularly good playgrounds in central Nice:

1. The first is in the glorious Promenade du Paillon (known by locals as La Coulée Verte). Town planners took the bold step of concreting over the river that used to flow through Nice and turning it into this amazing open space that leads down to the Promenade des Anglais. It’s bisected by a few roads, and in each section, you find different structures, including some wonderful play equipment at the theatre end of the park. Further south, towards the sea there are also fantastic automated water fountains that our children loved running through.

2. The second park that everyone will love is at the top of the Colline de Château (aka the Castle) – the hill that sits high above the Promenade des Anglais, separating the port from the old town. The views down to the port and the sea are spectacular, and the kids will love the playground. There’s a café near the playground, but you may prefer to take a picnic.

If you’re into culture, you’re in for a treat in Nice: Musee National Marc Chagall, the Musee Matisse and Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild to name but a few!

Public transport

The railways in France are generally excellent but, if you’re going to be relying on the trains , watch out for train strikes. Download the SNCF app or Trainline EU and check it, before you turn up at the station.

Cycling Tourism

Balade à vélo la Vélodyssée, près de Saint-Jean-de-Monts, sur la côte Atlantique.

Reading time: 0 min Published on 25 October 2023, updated on 17 April 2024

With 26,115 kilometres of cycle routes and greenways, France is the world's second most popular destination for cycle tourism. And the champion when it comes to inventing great escapes to discover nature, heritage and local delicacies. Climb the mountains of the Alps or the Pyrenees in the wake of the Tour de France, stroll along the banks of the Loire between châteaux and vineyards, pedal along the coast or explore towns and cities by bike... We explain how to organise your touring trip, cycle in town, and book suitable accommodation and services. Saddle up!

1. plan your cycling itinerary

Unless you want to pedal with your nose to the wind as and when you feel like it, it's best to organise your cycling trip in advance so that you can make the most of it. Whether it's a weekend, a day trip, a mountain bike tour, a route specially adapted for families or a long-distance tour, the France Vélo Tourisme website lists the various cycle routes available in France: Eurovélo routes, national cycle routes, greenways, cycle paths, etc. An interactive map and search engine enable you to find the route you're looking for. An interactive map and search engine allow you to choose your route (a loop or a one-way trip), depending on your technical level (beginner, family or experienced cyclist), duration or theme (châteaux and monuments, in the heart of vineyards, in the mountains or by the sea). The websites of the regional and departmental tourist boards are also full of information to help you plan your cycling trip!

Take your own bike or hire one locally?

Each solution has its advantages. Cycling with your own bike is reassuring for experienced cyclists, but it has to be transported. Hiring a bike is more suitable if you don't want to worry about transport or if this is your first experience of travelling by bike.

Travelling with a bike

By train The train is the most practical mode of transport for cycle tourists. Some TGV lines have spaces reserved for bicycles that have not been dismantled, as do "Ouigo classic trains" (€10 supplement) and Intercités trains (€5 to €10) and Intercités night trains (€10). Booking is compulsory on these lines. Reservations are not compulsory on most TER lines (with some exceptions). It is also possible to travel with a folded or dismantled bicycle on the TGV Inoui and Intercités lines (at no extra charge) and on the Ouigo Grande vitesse and Ouigo train classique lines (booking required, with an extra charge of €5). The bicycle must be placed in a cover measuring no more than 90 x 130 cm. Recumbents, tricycles, tandems and trailers are not permitted. During the summer (from June to September or in July/August), special services are available on trains to increase capacity for transporting bicycles. Travelling by train with a bicycle

By bus Some bus companies accept bicycles, such as Flixbus, on condition that they are packed or placed in covers (extra charge of 9 euros), or BlaBlaCar Bus (in a cover, with a maximum weight of 23 kg). It is generally possible to transport bicycles by air, although each airline has its own rules (weight, size, pricing, etc.). Travelling by Flixbus coach with your bike Travelling by BlaBlaCar bus with your bike

By boat You can also travel by boat, usually on ferries, but also in summer on boats or ferries between the mainland and the islands (check with the shipping companies beforehand). For a nice roaming tour, you can also opt to hire a barge, especially with your family. It's an ideal way of combining a soft mobility trip with cycling!

Hire a bike

You can book a "one way" hire (you hire the bike in one place and return it in another) from a number of hire companies, particularly on certain cycle routes.

  • Good to know : whether you choose to travel with your own bike or hire one, you can use luggage transport services (Bicybags, La Malle Postale, BagaFrance, Loire Vélo Nature, Bag Transfert, DeliverBag, etc.).

if the sunny days are making your legs tingle, saddle up! In the land of the Tour de France, there is no shortage of beautiful escapes. With 22,800 km of cycle routes and greenways, 5,500km of regional tourist routes, 3,000 road and mountain bike circuits inviting you to enjoy gentle pedalling as a couple, with your family or with friends. In the countryside, along a canal, by the sea, in the vineyards or in the mountains, from Northern France to the Côte d'Azur and from Brittany to Alsace... here's a small selection of the most beautiful tours and detours and discover France by bike.

Book accommodation, restaurants and other dedicated services

To travel by bike in optimum conditions, cycle tourists can use service providers with the "Accueil Vélo" label, all of which are listed on the France Vélo Tourisme website . More than 7,000 are listed: accommodation, restaurants, cycle hire and repair services, tourist offices and tourist sites. These businesses make a number of commitments: they must be located less than 5 kilometres from a cycle route, have facilities for cyclists (secure bike shelter, repair kit, plug for recharging, etc.), provide dedicated services (luggage transfer, washing and drying of clothes, bike washing, etc.) and offer a personalised welcome to cyclists (advice, weather, itineraries, etc.). The accommodation listed includes campsites, guest houses, hotels, unusual accommodation, self-catering cottages, etc. A community platform offers (with a subscription fee for the first year) home-stay accommodation for cyclists, and the Fédération Française de Cyclotourisme also lists the best places to stay. Find a restaurant close to cycle routes Search for "cycle-friendly" accommodation near cycle routes

2. Cycle routes in France

Balade à vélo le long du littoral de Bretagne.

In France, each region offers an infinite number of routes to explore by bike, mountain bike or electric bike, as well as long-distance routes combining véloroutes and "voies vertes" (greenways) to discover the natural riches and heritage of the region: The Loire à vélo, along the king of rivers and his châteaux, the ViaRhôna, from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean, the Vélodyssée, from the Basque country to Brittany or the Vélomaritime from Hauts-de-France to Finistère... Depending on your state of fitness and your desires, you can cycle part or all of them, unless you want to emulate the Tour de France riders and embark on a grand loop! Gourmets can also take advantage of the cycling and cheese routes : over 8,000 kilometres of routes and 1,500 cheese-making sites to cycle and enjoy!

Some not-to-be-missed cycle routes : La Loire à Vélo en Val de Loire the ViaRhôna from the Alps to Provence the Vélodyssée from Brittany to the Basque Country the Vélomaritime from Hauts-de-France to Brittany via Normandy

In towns and cities, cycling is a great way to get from one tourist site to another and around the surrounding area. Numerous improvements have been made in recent years to make French towns and cities even more accessible to cycle tourists, and the network of dedicated lanes is constantly expanding. All the major cities and many medium-sized towns have public bicycles available for hire (including long-term hire) at stations, based on the Vélib' model installed in the Paris region (1,443 stations in Paris and the surrounding area) and in 61 communes, with a fleet of almost 20,000 bicycles, 40% of which are electric (€1 for the first 30 minutes, €2 for each additional 30 minutes). Apps such as Weelo or Lime can also be used to hire electrically-assisted bicycles based on location. As well as the themed cycle tours and other bike treasure hunts on offer in Paris and many other major French cities, there are also long-distance routes such as the véloroutes that criss-cross the cities: in Paris, for example, you can cycle the Scandibérique route linking Belgium to Spain!

  • Self-service bike hire schemes in France's major cities: Vélib' in Paris Levélo in Marseille Vélo'V in Lyon VélôToulouse Vélobleu in Nice Bicloo in Nantes Vélhop in Strasbourg V3 in Bordeaux V'Lille Star - le vélo à Rennes

4. Learning the rules of road safety

Before taking your first turn on the pedal, it's vital to know the rules of road safety, especially in town where cyclists share space with pedestrians, motorised two-wheelers and cars. On the French road safety website , visitors can consult a few tips for good cycling behaviour and download a full information leaflet.

  • Good to know : helmets must be worn by children under the age of 12, whether drivers or passengers, and the use of devices likely to emit sound (earphones, earpieces, headphones) is prohibited on pain of a fine of €135. It is advisable to wear light colours, a hazard marker to prevent motorists from approaching, rear-view mirrors and trouser clips. Outside built-up areas, cyclists and their passengers must wear a certified retro-reflective jacket at night and in poor visibility.

"Tour de France Cycle City" label: soon 150 towns and 10 countries in the loop?

As part of its "Riding into the Future" programme to promote sustainable mobility, the Tour de France launched the "Tour de France Cycle City" label in 2021, encouraging all the initiatives taken by towns and cities that have already hosted the Grande Boucle to promote everyday cycling.

For this fourth edition, the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift have received bids from 24 cities, including six outside France. This year, 16 towns on the 2024 Tour de France route have applied, and two are on the 2024 Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift map, which should take the number of approved cities to 150... in 10 different countries!

The results will be announced on 15 May as part of the “Mai à vélo” (Bike in May) campaign.

150! That's the symbolic milestone the "Tour de France Cycle City" label could reach in its fourth edition. This initiative, created in 2021, enables towns that have already hosted the Grande Boucle to have their commitment to developing cycling in all its forms assessed and rewarded. Whether they are French or foreign, rural or urban, towns applying for the label must highlight all the existing measures to encourage cycling in their application and present local short- and medium-term development plans (infrastructure deployment, improving rider safety, learning to cycle with the "How to ride a bike" campaign, parking and combating theft, maintenance and repair, etc.). All these measures contribute to the growth of cycling as a means of daily transport, a source of leisure, and exercise.

Since 2021, 133 cities in eight countries have already received at least one level of accreditation. With 24 applications, the 2024 campaign could see the number of towns and cities recognised for promoting cycling rise to 150. In addition to the new French and Belgian cities that could appear on the map, two new territories are about to join the club, representing ten countries with towns awarded the label! Italy, where the Tour de France will set off on 29 June for the first time in its history, has three candidates: Rimini, Piacenza and Pinerolo. More exotic still, Japan, which for over ten years has welcomed the champions of the Grande Boucle to Saitama in the middle of autumn as part of a festive criterium reminiscent of the Asian craze for the event, could also be in the running!

Sixteen French towns on the route of the 2024 Tour and two others on the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift submitted bids, from Evaux-les-Bains, the least populous of the candidate towns, to Nice, the host town of a new and spectacular finish of the Tour de France on 21 July, reflecting the diversity of bids once again this year for a label that allows towns to showcase their assets on their scale. Four French cities that have hosted the event in the past have also applied, while two municipalities that have already received the label have requested a reassessment of their rating. The jury is now studying all the applications. The results will be announced to the candidate cities on 15 May 2024 as part of the "Bike in May" campaign.

Composition of the jury for the "Tour de France Cycle City" label: Christian Prudhomme, Director of the Tour de France; Émilie Defay, deputy editor-in-chief at France Bleu Paris; Jean Ghedira, director of communications, sponsorship and general secretariat at LCL; David Lazarus, mayor of Chambly and chairman of the "Sports" working group of the Association des Maires de France; Olivier Schneider, president of the FUB (French Federation of Bicycle Users); Karine Bozzacchi, CSR manager for the Tour de France.

Tour of Turkey: Frank van den Broek takes Queen stage and overall lead

Dutch Dsm-firmenich PostNL seizes race lead as he beats Merhawi Kudus to the summit win

SIENA ITALY MARCH 02 Frank van den Broek of The Netherlands and Team dsmfirmenich PostNL competes while fans cheer during the 18th Strade Bianche 2024 Mens Elite a 215km one day race from Siena to Siena 320m UCIWT on March 02 2024 in Siena Italy Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

Frank van den Broek won stage 6 of the Tour of Turkey on the 14km Spil Dağı climb, giving Dsm-firmenich PostNL their fourth stage win of the race and van den Broek the race lead.

The 23-year-old Dutch rider sat behind Paul Double (Polti Kometa) as the British rider led in the final two kilometres and closed down later attacker Merhawi Kudus (Terengganu Cycling Team). Double then faded in sight of the finish line and van den Broek surged to the line to hold off Kudus.

Thanks to time bonuses, Van den Broek also took the overall race lead, four seconds ahead of Kudus and nine seconds ahead of Double, with just two flat stages to race until the finish in Istanbul on Saturday.

Five riders formed the early break of the 160.1km stage, with Negasi Haylu Abreha (Q36.5) the last to be caught as his teammate Filippo Conca attacked and joined him with ten kilometres to climb.

Conca was then joined by Samuele Zoccarato (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) but Harold Lopez (Astana Qazaqstan) soon jumped across and surged then surged away.

Merhawi Kudus (Terengganu Cycling Team) attacked from the reduced front group to catch and pass Lopez on the steepest section of the climb. Britain’s Paul Double (Polti Kometa) led the chase across with Frank van den Broek (Dsm-firmenich PostNL) but generously rode on the front, allowing van den Broek to have his effort for the finish.

Van den Broek is a WorldTour neo-pro but earned his place in Dsm-firmenich PostNL’s squad by winning a stage at the 2023 Tour of Qinghai Lake and impressive rides in other races, including victory in the Ronde de l'Oise stage race in France.

“We’ve already won three stages and now a fourth, it’s amazing,” van den Broek said.

“I didn’t expect to win but the team put a lot of trust in me, they did a lot of work in the beginning of the stage and Julius van den Berg did a lot of work on the front of the peloton, so that gave me a lot of confidence. I’m very happy to win.”

He was confident of his chances after surviving the 10% section of the climb and staying with Double as he chased down Kudus.

I knew I had a chance to win when we went over the steepest part of the climb. It was a kind of flat-run-in and I knew I had an OK sprint,” Van den Broek said.

“The next two days are again a big chance for us with Fabio Jakobsen and our sprint train.

“It should hopefully be pretty easy for me to hold onto the leader’s jersey. I just need to finish in the main bunch. I also think I can even help with the leadouts. We’ll see.”

2024’s Best Commuter and Urban Bikes

8 Amazing Bikes for Commuting, Hauling Cargo, and Riding Around Town

Each year, Bicycling ’s test editors choose the Best Bikes from the thousands available across dozens of categories. Our process starts with analyzing price, features, and how each bike solves a rider’s needs. We also monitor cycling trends, research emerging riding categories, and closely follow new technologies. Then we tighten our focus on the bikes with the most potential, get them, ride them extensively, and discuss them rigorously amongst the test team and with other cyclists.

Almost no one uses a bicycle only how it’s portrayed on bike brands’ websites. So we test bikes in ways our readers ride them. We go to group rides and events, dig through social media posts, and dive into the minutia to give us insight into obstacles riders face and how they use their bikes to solve them.

lectric one e bike parked on a concrete surface

Only one word is needed to sum up and exemplify why Lectric’s One is a bike that shouldn’t be overlooked: Pinion. You will know what that means if you’re a die-hard bicycle tech nerd. But for the uninitiated, Pinion is a German brand that manufactures high-end and fully enclosed gearbox units—sort of like an internally geared hub, except mounted in the bottom bracket. Most consumers are unfamiliar with the brand because Pinion products usually wind up on very pricey and niche bikes.

So, this makes a Pinion system on a $2,000 commuter e-bike very exciting, especially since it’s a part usually reserved for bikes triple that price.

How did Lectric make the pricing work to include a Pinion gearbox on such an affordable model? Lectric combined Pinion’s C1.6 6-speed gearbox with a 750-watt rear-hub motor. (The gearbox and motor are combined into a single unit on pricier Pinion-equipped e-bikes.) Additionally, Lectric stuck to the much cheaper cadence sensor for motor engagement rather than go the costlier torque sensor route. However, Lectric enhanced the cadence sensor with 96 magnets versus the 12 typically used on the brand’s other models.

Lectric One eBike

One eBike

Lectric then joins the Pinion gearbox and hub motor with a Gates Carbon belt set-up (instead of a standard chain drive). The belt doesn’t require chainlube and runs cleanly, quietly, and efficiently. With the bike’s gears enclosed by the Pinion system, these two bits of tech help make the Lectric ONE essentially free of daily maintenance.

Riding the One, I was quickly enamored with the Pinion system’s smoothness and precision—nothing else on the market is quite like it—and the hub motor was impressively powerful. However, while the improved cadence sensor was better than others I’ve used, it was still very much a cadence sensor. Like most cadence sensor-equipped bikes, the One feels disconnected from the motor. This feeling is from a combination of lag (though very slight in this case) and because the force put into the pedals does not relate to the motor’s output. Both factors result in a slightly unnatural motor response.

With that said, it didn’t take long to get used to how the One delivers its motor assist. I’m happy to take a cadence sensor to get a Pinion gearbox and Gates belt drive at such a reasonable price. The One is an ideal option for riders seeking a dependable, low-maintenance, all-weather commuter bike with the bells and whistles of a bike normally costing significantly more. — Dan Chabanov

BEST BUDGET E-CARGO

rad power rad wagon 5

The Rad Wagon is now in its fifth iteration and has introduced countless people to the joys of a long-tail cargo e-bike. Since the Rad Wagon was one of the most affordable options in the category, it allowed many riders to try out a bike type that, while incredibly practical, often has a high cost of entry. The downside of that low price was that the Rad Wagon suffered from cheap and unreliable brakes, not something you want on a bike that can carry you plus two passengers.

Rad Wagon 5

The good news is that the newest iteration of the Rad Wagon has improvements in its standard equipment and only a modest price increase. For the extra $400 over the Rad Wagon 4, the new bike gets a suspension fork and smaller wheels with much wider tires. The Rad Wagon 5 also uses better lights (that now include turn signals) and, most crucially, a set of powerful hydraulic disc brakes. The Tektro hydraulic disc brakes are the most critical update to the bike and deliver reliable stopping power. All the updates combine to turn the Rad Wagon from a bike we recommended primarily based on price into one we confidently endorse as a great alternative to pricier cargo e-bike models. — D.C.

BEST SUPER COMMUTER

specialized turbo tero x bicycle parked on a street

The Turbo Tero X is a bike I can enthusiastically recommend to any cyclist.

This e-bike is so good and so versatile, and so damn handy it will become the bike you use most. If forced to describe it, I’d say the Tero X is a full suspension mountain bike with a class three motor made for everyday doings. The Tero X‘s upright position, flat bar, knobby tires, and suspension provide sure-footed multi-surface capability. And even on pavement, the bike’s suspension is a huge boon.

Hitting a pothole or bridge expansion joint hit at 28mph on a rigid 50-pound e-bike is uncomfortable at best; at worst, the rider can also cause the rider to get awkwardly bucked and lose control of the bike. The Tero X’s suspension makes for a more comfortable, safer, and more relaxed ride.

Another mountain bike feature that has real-world practicability is the dropper post. Dropping the saddle makes it possible to stand flat-footed at traffic lights and makes it easier to mount and dismount the bike with street clothes.

Specialized Turbo Tero X

Turbo Tero X

Specialized has long made excellent e-bikes, and the brand’s in-house developed motor (and accompanying apps) are some of the best. The motor offers a lot of torque with little noise or vibration, with a natural feeling tune that’s never jerky or awkward.

The claimed range from the 710Wh battery is 75 miles in Eco mode. But during my time with the Tero X, I hardly used Eco mode and just Turbo’d everywhere, which resulted in 25 or so miles of range. While that doesn’t seem like much, I found it was more than plenty for numerous trips around my small town before I needed to worry about plugging in. And recharges are fairly quick—even just plugging it in for 30 minutes was enough to erase any range anxiety.

The Tero X 6.0 is fully equipped with lights (the headlight puts out 1,000 lumens in high beam mode—more than enough to see clearly on dark roads and paths at night), fenders, a rear rack, and a kickstand.

The suspension fork precludes many front rack options—though options do exist—and the rear rack limit is just 44 pounds. So, this isn’t a cargo bike or something intended for hauling a week’s worth of groceries for the family. Instead, the Tero X is a bike for going places. It’s a bike that makes you want to leave the car at home—because going by bike is, as we all know, the best way to get anywhere. — Matt Phillips

BEST MID-TAIL E-CARGO BIKE

xtracycle rfa parked on a brick sidewalk

Xtracycle designed the RFA (short for Ready For Anything) to evolve around the changing needs of daily life. Its adjustable dropouts allow you to shorten and lengthen the wheelbase by 5.5 inches if needed. The shorter layout (dubbed the RFA Sport) comes with a smaller rear deck. We opted for the RFA Utility with its longer-length rack (might as well have more capacity, right?), but you can always change the wheelbase length in about an hour. Plus, Xtracycle’s website has a seamless interface for selecting accessories and custom options for your bike when ordering.

The bike feels sturdy and smooth. Its 2.5-inch wide tires dampen road vibration and make you feel like you can run over almost any pothole or cracked pavement, an admirable trait on a bike designed to carry hundreds of pounds of cargo. The steel frame and fork, combined with a front thru-axle, gave our test bike a precise and confidence-inspiring steering feel. Our test bike featured the Shimano STEPS EP6 motor, which assists up to 28 mph. Under daily riding conditions, however, the motor tops out around 23-25 mph.

RFA

The previous version of this bike did not come with stock fenders, but Xtracycle remedied this and now includes rear wheel skirts and footrests. Overall, the RFA is a smooth, solid-feeling bike ready for years of riding. Xtracycle backs this with a lifetime warranty for the frame and fork and a two-year warranty for the Shimano STEPS system.

The RFA exists in a crowded market of direct-to-consumer e-bikes. But as a cargo bike brand, Xtracycle has been around for much longer than many of its competitors. Debuting its first product, a cargo bike extension kit, in 1999. So, the brand knows the market and how riders use its bikes.

This bike is a well-thought-out and executed product made for the real world, not simply some nice-looking specifications listed on a website or feature sheet. I thought highly enough of the bike that, while I have tested many great e-cargo bikes, the RFA is the first one I used to take my daughter along for a ride. — D.C.

BEST BELT-DRIVE COMMUTER

riding the ride1up prodigy v2 in rain

Ride1Up‘s second-generation Prodigy commuter is an excellent follow-up to the brand’s original version. The new V2 retains the V1’s excellent Brose mid-drive motor and internal battery while featuring an improved aesthetic design, an air-spring suspension fork, a 9-speed drivetrain, and better brakes for the reasonable price of $2,395.

For an additional $300, Ride1Up offers the Prodigy V2 equipped with a Gates belt drive and Enviolo stepless gear rear hub. And for us, this is the package to buy.

A good commuter bike is practical, easy to use, and no fuss. It‘s something you ride to work, school, or errands around town, not something you expect to spend considerable time maintaining or repairing. For these reasons, many commuters choose a singlespeed bike—but even singlespeed chains require maintenance.

Prodigy V2

Belt-drive bikes offer advantages over traditional chain-type drivetrains, with an upside being their low maintenance—they do not require chain lube, stay remarkably clean, and rarely require adjustment or tightening. Plus, they are stealthily silent and look great.

Unfortunately, belt drives require an internal hub to shift gears—and internal hubs weigh a lot and have limited gear ranges. Thankfully, Ride1Up used Enviolo’s internal gear Trekking rear hub that features continuously variable, stepless gearing and a 380% gear range. The CVT allows riders to shift while stopped or under load and is super smooth.

While almost $2,700 is not chump change for a commuter bike, the Prodigy V2 is a steal compared to similarly-equipped Specialized and Gazelle models priced at $4,000. — Tara Seplavy

BEST HYBRID E-BIKE

riding a velotric t1

Hybrid bikes combine elements of road bikes (lightweight frame, 700c wheels) and mountain bikes (flat handlebar, wide-range gearing, and sometimes suspension). Since these bikes do not fully commit to either discipline, hybrids get poo-pooed by some cycling snobs and purists. And that‘s a damned shame because their combination of traits can make hybrids the best choice for many riders’ commuting, fitness, or leisure riding needs.

Weirdly though, while e-bikes currently command a lot of attention from bike brands (and space in their product portfolios), if you’re seeking an electric hybrid bike you will find stunningly few choices. Instead, many brands focus on utility e-bikes or models with wide tires for commuters or recreational riders, relying on motor power to negate the heft of the extra equipment.

Velotric T1 e-Bike

T1 e-Bike

Luckily, there are a few options for hybrid e-bikes. And one of the best I’ve recently tried is Velotric’s T1. This bike is sporty and quick and its handling feels similar to some road bikes. Some of that snappy ride feel is from the T1’s 350W rear hub motor, some from the road bike-like geometry, but a lot is from the weight. At 37.1 pounds, the T1 is on the light side for e-bikes (especially at this price) and doesn’t weigh that much more than many non-assist hybrids.

Velotric also packs a slew of tech features into the T1 that you wouldn‘t expect for a bike at $1,800. On the riding side, the T1 employs a torque sensor for a smooth and natural pedaling feel and a light-sensing headlamp that turns on when it gets dark. For security features, the T1 features a fingerprint lock on the bike and GPS tracking and theft alert via Velotric‘s app.

While many brands have apps for their e-bikes, Velotric‘s app on your phone pulls double duty as the T1’s display unit. Personally, I don‘t like my iPhone sitting on my stem and prefer a dedicated LCD (even if only a basic one). But I understand that many folks like this feature and they can use the app for bike data and navigation. — T.S.

BEST FOLDING E-BIKE

brompton c line electric folding bike parked in stairwell

Folding e-bikes are a hot category right now, with brands like Aventon, Rad Power, Lectric, and One-Up offering these models. But unfortunately, in reality, most of these bikes are enormous (even when folded) and heavy. That’s because many of these bikes start with (more or less) a full-size e-bike and simply add a hinge joint to the frame to handle the folding.

Brompton takes a decidedly different approach—electrifying its already excellent folding bike by adding a 250-watt motor to the front wheel. The result is a truly portable folding e-bike. One that you can easily carry and stow on a bus or a crowded commuter train. While the battery and motor add some heft to the C-Line, the 38-pound weight of the bike feels practically featherweight compared to typical e-bikes, which are routinely over 50 pounds.

Brompton C-Line Electric

C-Line Electric

If your bike trip is short enough and you don’t want to carry the extra heft of the power pack, the Brompton is one of the very few e-bikes that’s genuinely pleasant to ride unpowered. And this is where the C-Line’s 12-speed drivetrain comes in handy. The C-Line might be somewhat confusing if you’re accustomed to most bike gearing—it’s not a traditional 12-speed cassette at the rear. Instead, the Brompton uses an internal 3-speed hub paired with a 4-speed rear derailleur. Multiply four times three, and you get to Brompton’s 12-speeds.

The bottom line is that if you need an e-bike that folds small enough to sit under your desk at the office or fit into an overhead luggage bin on a train, the Brompton C-Line is your best option. It doesn’t hurt that the bike rides great and has clever engineering. — D.C.

BEST KID'S BIKE

trek wahoo path kids bike parked against a purple wall

Picking bikes for pre-teens is tough! Kids of this age are often too tall for traditional “kid‘s bikes” (usually aimed at younger audiences or are styled on BMX bikes), making them hard to ride for longer distances. But, they‘re also often too small for XS-sized adult bikes (that are too big and unwieldy).

Several brands introduced new models over the past few years designed for 8 to 12-year-olds to fill this underserved niche. Unfortunately, many are pricey or intended mainly for mountain biking (with fat knobby tires and suspension) versus bike paths and multi-use trails.

Trek’s new Wahoo Path bikes are a great option for pre-teens to use around the neighborhood, commuting to school, or riding with family. Trek offers the Wahoo in two wheel sizes: 24-inch (riders 4’3” to 4’11”) and 26-inch (riders 4’10” to 5’3”), and each is available in three colors. The bikes feature aluminum frames and forks, 2-inch wide tires, and wide-range 8-speed gearing.

Wahoo Path

The Wahoo Paths incorporate some solid attention to detail often overlooked by brands. An example is Trek’s use of Microshift’s Acolyte shifter. Designed for smaller hands, this trigger shifter is easier to use than shifters intended for adult hands. Another is the gear range—it uses an 11-38T cassette paired with a 28T chainring. This provides low gearing to get up some hills while also tall enough to ride on flat roads or the bike path.

Additionally, Trek built the Wahoo Path’s frame with standover in mind (without resorting to a step-through configuration). This allows kids to use the bike for (hopefully) a couple of years before they grow to another side. And since none of the frames or colors are overly boy- or girl-oriented, the bike is easier to pass to another young rider or sell when your child outgrows it. — T.S.
