A day trip from Nice to Èze Village is very easy to organize, even if you don’t have a car.

BY GUIDED TOUR

An Èze day trip with a guided tour is only interesting if you want to combine Èze with other French Riviera places nearby. This popular day tour from Nice is great because it combines the best of the French Riviera (Èze included) on a day.

How to Get from Monte Carlo to Éze Village

From Crémaillère – Monaco, take bus LR112. Count on taking 21 minutes.

In Èze Village, traditional houses had the ground floor for keeping the goats and the donkey while the owners slept on the first floor. Today, most ground floors are used as workshops or gift shops.

2. Visit Notre Dame de l’Assomption

best places to visit in eze france

Notre Dame de l’Assomption is one of the musts on our list of Èze things to do. This church, built in Neo-Classical style in the 18th century, is listed as French Historic Monument. You cannot miss it: Notre Dame de l’Assomption outstands from the rest of the houses thanks to its ochre color, size, and location on the hilltop.

The current bell tower dates from the 19th century. It has been struck by lightning several times, destroying the dome that originally covered it.

Visit also inside: the richly decorated interior is primarily baroque.

3. Visit Èze’s Jardin Exotique

best places to visit in eze france

The Exotic Garden is one of the best things to see in Eze Village, both for its magnificent plant collection and panoramic views.

The garden is built on the site of a medieval fortress, perched 429 meters above the sea. It has the best views of Èze and even the French Riviera’s best views, from the Esterel Mountains to the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.

The garden’s most interesting part is the collection of succulent plants and xerophytes from all the continents. The pathways are dotted with information panels about Èze’s artistic and historical heritage and curious facts.

This is one of the best Èze attractions, so don’t miss it! The Jardin Exotique is open every day of the year, from 9 am to sunset.

4. Hike the Nietzsche Path

best places to visit in eze france

Le Chemin de Nietzsche is a path that connects Eze Village to Eze-sur-Mer. It seems that Nietzsche (the famous philosopher) used to walk this path during his stays in Nice. His walks through this path inspired him to write the third part of this famous work, ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ (1883-1885).

The hike from Èze Village to Èze-sur-Mer is 2,1 km downhill, and it has numerous steps in some places. We recommend wearing good shoes and eventually a stick or trekking poles not to stress your knees. It usually takes an hour to walk it downhill. The sea views come after the second half of this path.

If you don’t have time to visit other French Riviera beaches , go swimming at Eze beach. This is a pebble beach, so you’ll definitely want to pack something to lay on when the pebbles get too hot in the summer.

5. A Dinner with a View

best places to visit in eze france

Enjoy a romantic dinner (or a special occasion) with the best view in one of Èze’s Michelin-starred restaurants: Chèvre d’Or and Château Eza.

La Chèvre d’Or ‘s main restaurant has 2 Michelin stars. Its menus go from 90-260€ per person, and a dinner à la carte costs from 180-290€ per person.

Chateau Eza  has 1 Michelin star. Its dinner à la carte costs about 100/150€ per person, and there’s a Tasting Menu of 125€ per person, served during dinner time.

So there you have it, a quick guide on what to do in Èze France and our best tips. Bon voyage!

12 Things to Do in Eze, France (From a France Expert)

' src=

Looking for the best things to do in Eze? I’ve got some great recommendations for you – read on for details!

The word ‘charming’ doesn’t even come close to doing Eze justice.

As someone who has traveled extensively in France and has spent 3 trips dedicated solely to the French Riviera and Provence, I can tell you that Eze is special.

This gem of a town is perched high on a hilltop in Southern France, not far from Nice. Narrow, cobblestone streets wind their way between ancient stone buildings. Vivid bursts of flowers spill from balconies, and potted plants and crawling ivy add a splash of color against the warm, earthy tones of the old walls.

Thanks to its high, hilltop position, the village offers a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean Sea, and is known for having been an artists’ haven. Today, artists still dominate the village, with ateliers and workshops filling the village and spilling out to the streets.

In short, this pristine, adorable town feels like stepping into a fairytale, and is absolutely worth visiting when you’re in the French Riviera.

If you want to visit multiple spots in one day and not worry about logistics, this small-group, all-day tour to Eze, Monaco, and La Turbie is excellent! After visiting Eze, you’ll also explore the glitzy, glammy country of Monaco, and finally stop by La Turbie for an impressive Roman monument and views over Monaco.

12 Unforgettable Things to Do in Eze

In this post, I’m sharing all the can’t-miss things to see and do in Eze. At the end of the post, I’m also discussing some helpful tips and practical info for visiting Eze!

Pro Tip: Eze is pronounced “eh-zz”

1. Wander the Town

best places to visit in eze france

The main thing to do in Eze is just walk around and soak up the ambiance. Eze is a quaint, incredibly preserved medieval town – every street and every corner is just picture-perfect. It’s one of those places where every street is a masterpiece, and you want to take a picture every 10 seconds.

As my mom and I walked around the town, eventually we would almost start laughing as we turned a corner and another insanely cute street would be in front of us.

best places to visit in eze france

The streets are all cobblestoned, with the buildings and walls bordering the street also made of stone. Everywhere you look, vines and ivy were climbing up the wall or draped across a surface, and potted plants and small bushes were situated up and down the narrow streets.

Black, wrought iron lamposts hung against the wall, and black wrought iron signs were hung advertising the many art galleries throughout town.

best places to visit in eze france

The old town is completely pedestrian, so the streets are narrow and winding, and there are no large squares or boulevards anywhere. Sometimes the streets were actually staircases, winding up and down the hills of the village.

The narrow streets were very intentionally designed to provide some welcome shade during the hot summer months.

The village is in pristine condition and was incredibly clean, with almost nothing in ruins and seriously nothing out of place.

2. Visit the Art Galleries and Boutiques

best places to visit in eze france

Eze has a rich history as being a haven for artists, and that tradition continues today, as the village has an impressive number of art galleries and boutiques from talented artists, painters, and sculptors.

There are a great number of art galleries and workshops in Eze, and several shops have free entrances to see the works of art displayed in a gallery-like area. Some studios have paintings out on the street, and there are many little boutiques to duck into as you wander the village.

best places to visit in eze france

I loved this because it felt so unique and special, tying a part of Eze’s past into something you can not only observe, but participate in today. And I love that real art, not just souvenir tchotchkes, is on display and for sale in the town. It’s very special!

3. Jardin Exotique d’Eze

best places to visit in eze france

The number one main attraction in Eze is the beautiful Jardin Exotique d’Eze, an absolutely stunning garden that’s planted around the ruins of a castle at the very top of the city.

You can look down over the village and to the sea from the garden, which certainly illustrates why Eze has the nickname of “The Eagle’s Nest.”

“Exotic” means that there are mostly cacti and desert-type plants in the garden, though the back section of the garden features more Provencal-style plants. Fourteen different statues representing the earth goddesses are interspersed with the plants, which fits perfectly with the culture of Eze.

best places to visit in eze france

Make sure you explore all the crisscrossing paths that take you to different levels and terraces in the garden. If you make your way down the stairs at the backside of the hill, you’ll find some soothing waterfalls and water features.

The whole area is really lovely. I loved this garden more than I was expecting!

  • Hours : 9am-7:30pm
  • Entrance Fee : 7 euro

4. Notre Dame de l’Assomption Church

best places to visit in eze france

Notre Dame de l’Assomption is the main church in Eze, and has a beautiful golden yellow exterior with an impressively ornate interior. The inside has beautiful green and tan marble pillars, gold embellishments and decorative elements, and murals on the ceiling of the dome. The effect is lovely.

I’m always impressed when these tiny villages have such beautiful and highly decorated churches, and Eze is certainly no exception.

5. The Cemetery

The Eze cemetery is just adjacent to the church, right off of the same, small square. The more historic part of the cemetery appears to be closed, but the more modern cemetery is open from 8am-7pm.

It’s possible the historic cemetery was just closed the day we were there, but I wouldn’t say the modern cemetery is even worth visiting (very small, and not much to see).

best places to visit in eze france

However, make sure you notice the monument on the square just outside the cemetery to the men from Eze who died in World War 1.

Interestingly, almost every town I’ve visited on the Cote d’Azur has a monument to the fallen men in WW1. That war was (unsurprisingly) a major sacrifice for the country, and so many towns created significant memorials for their soldiers.

I’m always a little taken back by how long the list of names of the fallen is. This is a small town with not many inhabitants, and yet the list feels so long.

6. Chapelle de la Sainte-Croix (des Penitents Blancs)

best places to visit in eze france

This very small chapel, The Chapel of the Holy Cross, is really just a room off of one of the streets in town, but it has a rich history.

This is believed to be the earliest structure in the village (dating back to the early 1300’s), and members of the Order of the White Penitents used the chapel. These people dressed in white robes and hoods and helped the poor and sick during the time of the plague in Europe (14th century).

7. The Perfumeries of Eze

While the town of Grasse remains the perfume capital of France (and of the world!), Eze is another, smaller hub for some of the major perfumeries in France. Just outside of the old town are a few different perfume locations you can visit.

While I’d still recommend visiting Grasse and getting the full and complete tours of the most historical factories and the birthplace of perfume in France, as well as doing a perfume-creating workshop (a top experience in southern France), this is a good stand-in experience and one I would still recommend doing in Eze.

8. Galimard Museum + Boutique

best places to visit in eze france

The Galimard Museum and Boutique are two interesting spots to visit, located in the same building. You can take a short, guided tour through the museum and learn about the history of perfume, the history of the Galimard brand, the basic construction of perfume, and the process of creating perfumes.

You’ll end in the boutique, where the employee/guide will walk you through a mini “perfume smelling,” where she will spray perfume on sample strips for you to smell and enjoy.

Generally, about 5 different perfume fragrances are introduced, but you can always test out any of the perfumes they have in the shop. My mom and I were absolutely delighted with this – neither of us are huge perfume wearers, but we found the information interesting and the process of testing out different perfumes fascinating and a really fun activity.

The museum and tour and boutique testings are all free, you just show up and ask to visit. There’s zero pressure to buy and the workers are very happy to let you peruse and sample the perfumes.

9. Fragonard Usine and Boutique

Fragonard is another top French perfume brand, and also has a factory ( usine ) where you can take a short, free tour. There is also the Fragonard boutique you can visit for shopping and perfume testing.

Unlike the Galimard Museum and Boutique, which were located in the same building, the Fragonard usine + boutique are a couple of blocks away from each other, and you can visit one or both.

10. Chemin Frederic Nietzsche

The Chemin Frederic Nietzche path takes you from the village of Eze and down the mountain to the sea, the beach, and the coastal town of Eze-sur-Mer (Eze by the Sea).

best places to visit in eze france

The path is so-named because renowned German philosopher, Frederic Nietzsche, hoping to improve his health, spent some time living in Eze in the 1880’s. He hiked this trail up from the sea to the hilltop village daily, and was where he took inspiration for his third philosophical novel, Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

If you are starting the trail in Eze, you can find the trailhead just outside the village walls, just to the left of the Le Château de la Chèvre d’Or hotel entrance (you can’t miss it!)

best places to visit in eze france

The path is rugged and steep, and it’s definitely more of an intense hike than a leisurely stroll – I’d recommend good shoes as the path is rocky and uneven in many spots.

If you plan to hike from the bottom up, be prepared for an intense workout. We were quite happy that we chose to go top-down. It’s a great hike though – the views of the sea, particularly on the last ¼ of the hike, are phenomenal.

11. Viewpoint on the Nietzsche Path

best places to visit in eze france

Just a few minutes from the top of the path is a little offshoot that takes you to a viewpoint of Eze village. You’ll only get a partial view of the village, but it’s not bad and about as good of a view as you’ll get of this village. I think it’s worth the couple of minutes it takes to stop off here.

12. Plage d’Eze (Eze Beach)

best places to visit in eze france

When you get to the bottom of the Nietzsche Trail, you’ll want to cross the pedestrian bridge right in front of you and walk the few minutes through some residential streets to reach the beach.

The beach is rocky, but extends far along the coastline. We didn’t get in and swim, but there is a little pier that we sat on and put our feet in the water for a while, which felt amazing after hiking down the trail in the warm weather.

Practical Information

How to get to eze.

There are a few different ways to get to the village.

  • You can arrive via bus for just a few euros.
  • You can take the train to Eze-sur-Mer, and then hike the Chemin Frederic Nietzsche up to Eze Village.
  • You can drive yourself, or take an Uber or taxi.
  • Finally, visiting as part of a guided tour of the French Riviera is also a great option.

For more information, read my detailed guide on how to get to Eze.

Guided Tour to Eze

Taking a tour is a great option for visiting Eze if you don’t want to handle logistics and/or if you want to easily visit multiple French Riviera villages and cities in one day.

The tour I recommend for visiting Eze is this excellent, small-group, all-day tour to Eze, Monaco, and La Turbie . You get a visit to the charming city of Eze, then you’ll explore the glitzy, glammy country of Monaco, and finally stop by La Turbie for an impressive Roman monument and views over Monaco.

How Long Do You Need in Eze

Eze is small and very compact – you can easily explore the entire village and walk down the sea with a half-day in the city.

Eze is a popular destination, and it does get busy during the middle of the day. We arrived at 8am and had the village basically to ourselves for an hour. Other visitors started arriving around 9am, when the Exotic Garden opened. By 10:30am, the village was bustling with people.

How to Fit Eze Into Your French Riviera Itinerary

Eze works really well as a day trip from Nice , Monaco, Cannes , or Antibes (some of the nearest bigger cities on the Mediterranean), or if you’re staying in a smaller town nearby.

While most people choose Eze day trip, there are a few absolutely gorgeous hotels in the village, so you can enjoy the quaint atmosphere in the mornings and evenings, when the village is quiet and serene.

If that interests you, these are the 2 main hotels that are actually in the middle of Old Town Eze:

Chateau Eza: This hotel is a converted castle decorated in Louis XIII style. Many rooms have a view of the sea and private balconies, and the hotel restaurant is excellent.

La Chèvre d’Or : This luxury hotel has great sea views, private gardens, an outdoor heated pool, four different restaurants, and a wellness center. Everything about the property and rooms is upscale and beautiful.

Is Eze Worth Visiting – The Wrap Up

I think it’s clear from my gushing in this article that I loved Eze. And while it’s a popular destination (and can get busy during the daytime), I still think it’s an absolutely lovely village full of fairytale charm and pretty corners. Eze is definitely worth a visit when you travel through southern France !

History of èze.

Eze’s rich history is steeped in the influence of various powerful rulers throughout the centuries. The Italian royal family, the House of Savoy, took control of Eze in 1338 and held it until the French reclaimed it.

Prior to that, the Moors governed Eze for a period of 80 years. Although the village was unfortunately destroyed by fire during the medieval era, it was rebuilt by the French and remains a striking example of medieval architecture today.

When exploring the winding streets and cobblestone pathways, visitors can’t help but feel transported back in time, walking in the footsteps of Eze’s medieval residents, the Ézasques.

Eze is a unique destination in the French Riviera as it is not just a village, but a commune consisting of two distinct areas: the medieval hilltop village known as Vieux Eze and the coastal area known as Eze-sur-Mer or modern Eze.

Stretching from the glistening waters of Èze-sur-Mer all the way up to its famous hilltop medieval village, this charming commune offers a picturesque blend of sea and mountain views.

When people talk about Eze Village, they usually mean Vieux Eze, which is the charming and historical part of the commune. This well-preserved medieval village with its narrow streets, stone houses, and breathtaking views is a must-visit for anyone exploring the French Riviera.

Eze You Like it on the Riviera

From its hot pink bougainvillea, ivy and flowers that grow everywhere to its boutiques, art galleries and jewellery stores along the winding walkways, the perched village of Eze has retained all its natural charm over the years. Gustasp and Jeroo Irani re-visit their memories of Eze.

Our first glimpse of Eze, a medieval little village on the French Riviera, reminded us of an eagle’s nest poised on the summit of a hill.

We had arrived by bus from Nice , a half hour away from this charming hamlet. A short amble from the bus stop led us to an ancient stone archway at the entrance of the village which turned out to be the gateway to the most romantic little place imaginable - edged with flower-bedecked, narrow streets and alive with the clamour of unseen song birds. A narrow cobblestone path, ornate with archaic street lamps, invited us into a world that seemed moored in its medieval origins. We walked down an arcade of blushing buildings. Every archway, door, window, balcony and nook in the wall was dressed in flowering plants. We were hopelessly hooked on Eze.

France-Erz-Village-2

This beautiful enchantress was just waking up when we arrived. The toll of church bells that reverberated through her empty streets beckoned. We entered a chapel through an arched gateway that supported a soaring steeple and crossed ourselves with holy water. The place was deserted but for the figurines that adorned the altar, murals and stained-glass windows of the baroque building.

Soothing strains of the flute swirled around us like an ocean of compassion. Even though we were in a strange place, seemingly tucked away in the folds of nowhere, we felt very much at home.

At that moment, we knew that just by being alive we were expressing His pleasure. It was one of the most moving moments that we had ever experienced.

France-Eze-Village-Church-MainAltar

We would have liked to linger but had other pressing matters to attend to, like exploring the rest of Eze which was priming itself up for another day. Souvenir shops, bars and restaurants that dotted the little streets had opened their doors to receive the first tourists who had started trickling in.

As we strolled down the cobble-stone streets, shopkeepers dusted and arranged their wares: homemade jams and wines; silk scarves; garments made of delicate lace; multi-hued glass vases and lamps; wood carvings… We could not help but smile at the sight of a row of toy ducks and chickens peering over a ledge into one of the display windows.

France Eze village-7

Occasionally, we had to step aside to allow people to cart their provisions around in trolleys. Yes, Eze is a vehicle-free village. A porter trundled the luggage of a guest staying in one of the luxury boutique hotels, and we decided to check out what the establishment had to offer. Pure magic and romance! The hilltop haven had cosy rooms that overlooked a picturesque little village at the base of the cliff and sweeping beaches punctuated by rocky outcrops and the deep-blue waters of the Mediterranean. We sat down at a table in the hotel’s open-air restaurant that seemed to balance on the edge of the cliff and ordered coffee. The brew was expensive but the moment was priceless.

France-Erz-Village-ViewOfRiveriaCoastline

There were more atmospheric restaurants scattered around the village. Some comprised no more than two chairs, a table and an umbrella snuggled in a corner of the street while others were perched at strategic points that offered swoon-worthy views.

France-Erz-Village-StreeCafe

At the far end of the village, a narrow pathway opened out into a bristling cactus garden called Jardin Exotique d’Èze . It was once crowned by a 12th century castle. In 1706, when Louis XIV of France captured Eze, he ordered that the fortress walls of the residing warlord of the village be razed. According to one shopkeeper, the order was given in a moment of jealous rage. “When Louis XIV realized that he could not enjoy the spoils of his victory and the stunning setting it came with, as he had to return to Paris, he decided destroy it so that no one else could enjoy it,” he explained.

Today, of course, steady streams of tourists flock to this hilltop retreat where the King of France may have destroyed the walls of a fortress but could do nothing to impair its stunning good looks.

By then, the narrow streets of the village had started to bustle with activity, with a growing number of visitors poking around its pretty little nooks. Among the popular attractions Eze has to offer are two perfumeries , Galimard and Fragonard , from Grasse . Visitors can also drop in at the factory of Verrerie d’Art Eze and watch craftsmen blow glass into the most unique shapes and colours.

France-Erz-Village-6

We, however, skipped these ‘attractions’ and preferred to continue flirting with Eze, all decked up in her medieval trimmings.

That charming siren still haunts our dreams even as we languish in a bleak lockdown.

File Facts Located between Nice and Monaco, Eze is best accessed from Nice, a half-hour drive away by local bus or car.

Overlooking view of the French Riviera from Eze Village

Before we explore the attractions and activities in Eze in more detail, let’s first familiarize ourselves with some important details about this village. It’s best to clarify these points early on to avoid any confusion later.

Eze is a commune situated in the southeasternmost corner of France, 22 kilometers from the Italian border, within the Alpes-Maritimes department. If you look at a map, you’ll find Eze nestled between Nice and Monaco, which are the starting points for day trips to Eze

You read it right: Eze is not just a village but a commune, or township.

For simplicity, we can say that Eze has two parts: the “old Eze” perched on a mountaintop and the “modern Eze” or “Eze-Sur-Mer” located near the beach. When we refer to Eze Village, we often mean Vieux Eze or the medieval village of Eze built on top of the mountain. This is the quaint part of Eze and the main attraction of the commune.

Built on a mountain that’s 427 meters above sea level, Vieux Eze can be seen from afar, resembling an eagle’s nest. This is why it’s often described as the “Eagle’s Nest” village. However, Vieux Eze is now more commonly known as the “Museum Village.” This is due to its preserved medieval state, which feels like an open museum, and the numerous art museums found within the village.

Streets of Eze Village full of charm

Now, let’s dive deeper!

1. Le Jardin Exotique

View from the Exotic Garden in Eze Village

Let’s start the list with the location offering the most breathtaking views in Vieux Eze — Le Jardin Exotique. As the name suggests, Le Jardin Exotique is a garden filled with exotic plants from various parts of the Mediterranean and desert regions. It’s situated at the highest point in the village.

Visiting Le Jardin Exotique is like accomplishing three things at once. You get to enjoy stunning views of the French Riviera, discover rare plant species, and explore castle ruins that transport you back in time. The castle was built by the lords of Eze in the 12th century. If it had survived past wars and conflicts, it would be over 800 years old today.

Although the castle no longer exists, the magic of the past is still palpable. The tile-roofed houses visible from the vantage points and the maiden sculptures within the garden contribute to the medieval ambiance.

For plant lovers, Le Jardin Exotique is particularly fascinating. You’ll encounter a variety of unusual and intriguing plants, each with its own QR code. By scanning these codes with your smartphone, you can learn more about each plant.

In summary, most of the plants in Le Jardin Exotique are succulents, belonging to species ranging from Agavaceae to Saxifragaceae. These plants originate from regions as diverse as Madagascar, China, and Mexico.

The last time I checked the official website of Le Jardin Exotique , the entry fee indicated was 7 EUR/adult. Then, the opening hours vary per month/season. See details below:

  • 9:00 am to 4:30 pm — November to March
  • 9:00 am to 6:30 pm — April to June, October
  • 9:00 am to 7:30 pm — July to September

Are you also interested in city gardens? They are often elegant and full of heritage. Paris boasts several such gardens, one of which is on my list of must-visit places during a trip to Paris .

2. Stroll in Vieux Èze

Arches and walkways in Eze Village

If there’s one thing that’s absolutely unmissable in Eze, it’s a stroll through its preserved village. Vieux Eze is the primary reason to visit Eze.

Here, both your physical body and imagination will be transported into a world of medieval charm. This part of Eze offers the ultimate “escapism” experience you might be seeking.

Vieux Eze’s stone-bricked houses, walls covered with flowering vines, ceramic pathways, arches, and curvy metal decorations all seem straight out of scenes from tales and myths.

What may surprise you in Vieux Eze are the charming shops and museums tucked away in the narrow streets of Eze. It’s like a museum within a museum, stepping from one (open) museum into another.

Previously, I suggested that Eze can deliver the top-notch “escapism” you might desire in your travels, are you aware of another location that offers the same? It’s in Colmar .

3. Église d’Èze (Èze Church)

Eze Church seen from the parking lot

Now that the castle in Eze no longer exists, the only major landmark in Vieux Eze is Église d’Èze or Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption. This structure, specifically the clock tower, can be quickly seen even from the road to Eze.

Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption dates back to the 18th century and showcases neoclassical architecture from the outside. It may not parallel the extravagant churches in France’s primary cities, but it offers many quiet and peaceful moments.

Another church once stood where Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption is built today. It was damaged by previous wars but was rebuilt into what you can see when you visit Eze today. Despite changes in its physical appearance due to time and human conflict, beauty still exists within it.

Like Vieux Eze, the interiors of Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption are akin to a museum filled with religious artworks. The murals inside Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption exhibit a trompe-l’oeil Baroque style, creating a 3D effect that can be deceiving yet magical in appearance.

Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption houses several chapels where you can see canvases of saints, framed stuccoes, and faux marbles. Appreciating them should give you insights into the kind of beauty the residents of Eze had in mind during the enlightenment age.

Facade of Eze Church

When it comes to churches, one of the most historical ones in France is situated in Reims . This is where Notre Dame de Reims, the coronation church of the kings of France, is located. Notre Dame de Reims is not only steeped in history but is also frankly stunning.

4. Parfumerie Fragonard L’Usine laboratoire

best places to visit in eze france

From the front yard of Église d’Èze, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the area. This includes the Eze bus stop, parking lot, and various shops and restaurants.

In the same vicinity, you will find the next attraction in Eze: Parfumerie Fragonard L’Usine Laboratoire. This is the place where Fragonard brand products are developed and made. This vast factory laboratory of perfumes and cosmetics welcomes anyone who wishes to experience the captivating aroma of their products.

Fragonard is a renowned French perfume brand , famous for its high-quality products at affordable prices. The brand employs a traditional technique used by the Arabs dating back to the 8th century. A visit to the Fragonard factory laboratory will provide insights into how the brand’s creams and other skincare products are made. You will discover the manufacturing techniques that have been used and refined since ancient times.

If you’re familiar with the process of making whiskey, you’ll find the perfume-making process surprisingly similar. The tour provides a wealth of information, but it’s presented in a way that’s easy to digest and highly educational.

A visit to the Fragonard factory laboratory in Eze is not just about observing their machinery and collection of perfume products. They also offer interactive activities such as soap-making workshops and olfactory games to test your sense of smell.

For budget-conscious travelers, the Fragonard factory is a great destination as there’s no entry fee, and the guided tour is also free. You will be accompanied by an expert who can explain everything in detail.

According to the Fragonard Parfumeur’s website , they conduct guided tours every hour from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm, with the closing time at 6:45 pm. If you wish to join, simply go to their reception desk as online reservations are not required.

5. Hike Mount Bastide

The aroma in Parfumerie Fragonard L’Usine Laboratoire is truly pleasing to the senses. However, the scent of fresh air is equally delightful! Eze is nestled between mountains and beaches, offering an environment with minimal pollution.

The most significant aspect is that you will not only breathe in fresh air, but also witness breathtaking views! One of the closest natural attractions from Eze Village is Mount Bastide.

Hiking to Mount Bastide realistically takes about an hour to complete one way, covering nearly 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) of trail to the summit. The majority of the hiking trail is flat, with only the middle section having a steep incline (30%+ gradient).

In total, there will be a 190-meter (623 feet) elevation gain from Eze to reach the peak of Mount Bastide, which stands at a height of 570 meters.

You can check this map to guide you well:

The trail is rocky and lined with shrubs. Hiking to Mount Bastide from Eze Village should feel like a rejuvenating experience, particularly when you reach the summit. The journey offers scenic views all the way to the top.

From the summit of Mount Bastide, you can see the coastal town of Eze, the turquoise beaches of the French Riviera, and as far as the Villefranche-Sur-Mer and Saint Jean Cap Ferrat peninsulas.

Here’s a 360-degree view of the landscape from the summit of Mount Bastide:

6. Chemin de Nietzsche (Nietzsche Hiking Trail)

View from Nietzsche hiking trail

In addition to Mount Bastide, another nature activity you can try in Eze is hiking the Nietzsche trail. This trail connects Eze-Sur-Mer and Vieux Eze. Like the Mount Bastide hike, you can expect breathtaking views from here.

You might be wondering why it’s called the Nietzsche trail. The name dates back to the late 19th century when the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche visited Eze . He sought a warmer place to live to alleviate his migraines and to have the freedom to philosophize. Nietzsche’s stay in Eze proved beneficial. He once said, “I slept well, I laughed a lot, and I found marvelous vigor and patience.”

During his time in Eze, Nietzsche completed his book “Thus Spoke Zarathustra,” parts of which were inspired by Eze, most notably the scenic mountain trail locals then called “Le Chemin de Nietzsche.” With its breathtaking coastal views and tranquil forest trails, it’s easy to see why Nietzsche found both healing and inspiration on this mountain trail.

If you want to experience a touch of the nature that Nietzsche enjoyed, Eze is a destination to consider! After exploring the charming Vieux Eze, the Chemin de Nietzsche is the mountain trail to hike if you want to relax on a beach.

Hiking the Chemin de Nietzsche from Vieux Eze is less strenuous than the Mount Bastide hike due to its downward slope, with a 350-meter (1148-feet) elevation difference. The trail is primarily rocky, with some parts made into stairs. The trail extends slightly more than 2 kilometers (1.2 miles). It can take you 45 minutes to an hour to hike the Chemin de Nietzsche from Vieux Eze to Eze-Sur-Mer beach.

You can use this map to guide you further if you want to hike the Chemin de Nietzsche from Vieux Eze to Eze-Sur-Mer beach and vice versa:

7. Èze Beach

Eze Beach

If you’re visiting in the summer or simply want to unwind with the soothing sound of the sea, a trip to Eze Beach is a great idea. The South of France boasts many beaches, but if you’re seeking a less crowded option, Eze has one.

Eze Beach sees fewer tourists compared to other beaches in the area for a few reasons. Firstly, it’s a pebble beach. Additionally, while Eze Beach is long, the area where you can walk is relatively narrow.

Despite this, Eze Beach is clean and offers beautiful views. You can see the rocky mountains and hills right from the coast. The water is also very clear.

If you plan to visit Eze Beach, it’s advisable to bring appropriate footwear to ensure comfort while walking on the pebbles. As there are fewer shops in the vicinity, you might want to bring your own food for a picnic.

For those seeking accommodation, there are resorts and beach hotels along the beach. Here’s a 360-degree view of Eze Beach for your reference:

8. Parsec-Astrorama

If you’re traveling to the French Riviera with children, one of the enriching experiences they can enjoy is provided by Astrorama. This venue, known as the “true balcony to the stars,” is just a 10-minute drive from Eze Village.

Astrorama is managed by Parsec, an association dedicated to scientific mediation in the fields of Astronomy and Space. With their guidance, you and your child can learn a great deal about outer space.

The program offered by Astrorama includes a variety of educational sessions and hands-on experiences. These include planetarium sessions and activities designed to help you discover constellations.

Perhaps the most exciting part is when you and your child are given the opportunity to observe the stars, sun, and moon using their sophisticated telescopes and instruments. If you’re interested in acquiring your own space observation tool, the experts at Astrorama can advise you on what to purchase and teach you how to use it.

Astrorama is situated 650 meters above sea level, nestled in the mountains and hills, slightly removed from the city’s light pollution—making it an ideal location for stargazing. Here’s where you can find Astrorama:

It’s important to visit Parsec Astrorama when the weather is favorable. Cloud cover can hinder the experience. Be sure to check your weather app before going, or consider visiting during the summer when the skies are typically clear.

You can find more information about Astrorama’s programs, the schedule of activities, and reservation tools on their official website , which is in French.

9. Fort de la Revère

best places to visit in eze france

Fort de la Revere is a hidden gem in Eze, offering both historical value and breathtaking views. It’s a favorite picnic spot among locals, boasting a panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea that extends all the way to the city of Nice.

On clear days, the view from Fort de la Revere can reach as far as the Cap Corse peninsula on the island of Corsica, which is 180 kilometers away (112 miles).

Situated at an altitude of 696 meters (2283 feet), the view from Fort de la Revere is even more breathtaking than what you can see from Eze Village. In fact, you can observe Eze Village from here, with the sea serving as a stunning backdrop.

The history of Fort de la Revere dates back to the end of the 19th century, a time when the French identified this site as an ideal location for guarding the skies above the city of Nice. The fort is quite fascinating to explore, especially if you’re interested in experiencing military architecture firsthand. One notable feature is the fort’s roof, which is made of soil and grass, making it difficult to detect by plane bombers.

Like Mount Bastide, Fort de la Revere can also be a hiking destination from Eze Village. The hiking trail between these two locations stretches for 2.2 kilometers (1.36 miles) with an overall elevation gain of 330 meters. If you’re an experienced hiker, you can complete the hike from Eze Village to Fort de la Revere within an hour. However, it’s worth noting that this hike is more challenging than the Mount Bastide hike.

Here’s a map to guide you further:

If you have an interest in military or defensive structures, you might want to visit the beautiful city of Strasbourg . The city features a dam mechanism that was used to transform the river surrounding its old city into a large moat. This served as a defensive measure to prevent enemies from entering the city.

10. Moyenne Corniche

Moyenne Corniche

If you’re visiting Eze by car, you should definitely take a drive along Moyenne Corniche. This is one of the most scenic roads on the French Riviera and is generally considered safer to drive than the Grande Corniche.

Moyenne Corniche is the road that overlooks Eze-Sur-Mer. It’s situated a few hundred meters above sea level and runs parallel to Eze beach. If you want to travel the entire road, you’ll be driving for approximately 25 kilometers (15.5 miles), starting from Nice and extending past Monaco.

Moyenne Corniche offers numerous incredible photo opportunities. If you’re traveling by car, there are several points along the road where you can park. The best spots often have a wide road shoulder that is specifically designed for sightseeing.

Have this part of Moyenne Corniche near Eze as an example:

You can swipe the 360-image above to see more views. Click the forward arrow to navigate along Moyenne Corniche.

Best Time to Visit Eze

While Eze is open and accessible throughout the year, the optimal time to visit, in my opinion, is from May through September. This period typically sees little to no rainfall in the French Riviera, making it ideal for outdoor adventures and beach activities.

During these months, Eze is particularly enchanting when bathed in sunlight. The strong sunlight enhances the beauty of the village, intensifying the hues of the stone houses and the flowers and vines that adorn their facades. This creates a visual feast that will have you eagerly exploring every corner and capturing photographs at every turn.

One particularly magical time to visit Eze is during the late afternoon until sunset. Perched atop a hill, Eze offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean. As the sun descends towards the horizon, the scenery is bathed in a golden glow, creating a truly unforgettable spectacle.

The importance of pleasant weather during a visit to Eze cannot be overstated, especially when considering the attractions and activities around the medieval village. The beach, hikes, and scenic drives are all more enjoyable and fun under a clear, blue sky!

If you’ve visited other beautiful villages in the South of France that resemble Eze, and the weather is uncooperative on the day you plan to visit Eze during your trip in the French Riviera, I would strongly recommend rescheduling your visit to Eze for a day when the weather is perfect.

How Much Time to Spend in Eze

Ideally, a single day is sufficient to see the highlights of Eze, which include Vieux Eze, Le Jardin Exotique, and one outdoor attraction. However, the amount of time you need in Eze greatly depends on your reasons for visiting.

If you’re primarily interested in sightseeing, you can visit Eze in just an hour. Conveniently located between the beautiful cities of Nice and Monaco, Eze is a perfect short stop during your journey.

An overnight stay in Vieux Eze (Château Eza or Hôtel Château de La Chèvre d’Or) would be most fitting for a special trip, such as a honeymoon or anniversary, where a unique location is desired for such a memorable occasion. In this case, you might prefer a hotel in Eze with a view of the coast, where you can relax all day and night, soaking up the romantic ambiance of the village.

You can find out how much it costs to stay a night in the mentioned hotels right here.

Where to Stay in Visiting Eze

Unless you’re on a special trip, as previously mentioned, I wouldn’t recommend staying within Vieux Eze. The prices can be quite high as these are five-star hotels.

If you’re keen on staying in Eze for specific reasons, consider Eze-Sur-Mer, where more affordable deals can be found. One reason could be the proximity to Vieux Eze, allowing you to reach the medieval village quickly. This could be particularly useful if you want to catch the sunrise in the village.

Another reason might be if you plan to engage in outdoor activities around the village. However, the hotel options in Eze are not as plentiful as those in nearby cities.

If you’re looking for a more affordable hotel that’s closer to a wider range of attractions and amenities, consider booking in Nice or Monaco. The best hotel deals in the French Riviera can be found here.

How to Get to Eze

When you’re in Monaco or Nice, Eze is just a simple trip away.

If you’re starting from Nice and heading to Eze, you’ve got a few options. You could hop on a train from Nice Ville to Eze, which runs every 30 minutes and gets you there in about 13 minutes. If you prefer the bus, the Zou! Alpes-Maritimes bus goes from Col de Villefranche to Èze Village every hour, and the ride is about 9 minutes. And of course, if you’ve got a car, you can drive the 12.4 kilometers or 7.7 miles via Corniche André de Joly and Avenue Bella Vista.

Now, if you’re in Monaco, you can also take the train from Monaco Monte Carlo to Eze. It’s a short 7-minute ride and trains run every 30 minutes. The Zou! Proximité bus is another option, going from Jardin Exotique to Èze Village every 2 hours, and it takes about 10 minutes. If you’re driving, it’s about 12.8 kilometers or 8 miles to Eze from Monaco.

You can check the bus schedules from the official website of Zou !

Arriving at Eze by train? You can catch bus #83 for a quick ride to Eze Village. If you prefer a hike, the Chemin de Nietzsche is a scenic route from the Eze train station to Eze Village.

Guided Tours and Eze Day Trips

Do you need help getting around Eze or Nice to see the unmissable attractions?

There are tour packages that let you see not only Eze but also Nice, Monte Carlo, and Monaco—it’s the best deal! You also have options to visit the best attractions in the French Riviera (of course, Eze is included) by road or by boat !

More Beautiful Villages Like Eze

If you’re interested in visiting more places like Eze or comparing Eze to another beautiful village in the South of France, I have some recommendations: 10 of the most beautiful villages in the south of France . Like Eze, they are charming, with some surrounded by various attractions and others offering incredible views.

If Eze has sparked your interest in exploring romantic and quaint villages, consider Saint-Paul-de-Vence , which is also in the French Riviera, as well as Gordes and Saint-Cirq-Lapopie . These villages are perched on hilltops and are home to little gems like artworks and panoramic viewpoints.

For a trip that feels like it’s straight out of a fantasy novel, consider Carcassonne , Rocamadour , and Domme . They are among the most historical villages in my recommendations. When you visit these villages, expect to discover many interesting tales and scenes that transport you back in time!

Lastly, if you’re looking for a beautiful village surrounded by spectacular natural attractions, you should discover Chamonix , Moustiers-Sainte-Marie , and Aigues-Mortes . From the Alps to the gorges and to the pink seas, these villages offer experiences you wouldn’t want to miss for a blend of wanderlust-satisfying and adventurous moments.

Well, that’s all the information I have about Eze at the moment. If this post was helpful, I’d appreciate it if you could save it on Pinterest and spread the word! Thanks so much, and may your upcoming journeys be enjoyable.

The Best Things to do in Eze, France: A Day Trip from Nice

The French Riveria is a beautiful part of France to visit. There’s no shortage of charming coastal towns here and after spending a week based in Nice , I enjoyed exploring a few of them. However, without a doubt, my favourite was the cliff-side village of Eze. I visited Eze as a day trip from Nice and highly recommend that you add it to your itinerary as well. So, for anyone considering visiting this medieval village, here are my top things to do in Eze, France.

About Eze, France

View of Eze, France from the bus station

Eze, which has also been named the Eagles Nest because of its location, dates back as far as 2000 BC. The land was occupied by both the Romans and the Moors over the years, and was fortified by the House of Savoy in the late 1300s.

Eze has a tumultuous history and today is considered to be a museum town. This means that very few locals actually live here. Instead, the village is made up mostly of restaurants, hotels, and shops as it is a popular destination among tourists.

Eze is quite small so, when it comes down to it, there really aren’t a lot of things to actually do in Eze. The highlight of this medieval village is just exploring on your own time. It’s not a place to visit with a checklist, but rather a place to just enjoy the atmosphere and views.

How to Get to Eze, France

Looking out the window from the bus to the village of Eze, France

Eze is an easy day trip (or even half day trip) from Nice. If you have rented a car and drive it will take about an hour to get there. You can also easily grab a local bus, although the trip tends to be a bit longer given stops (and traffic).

From the Gare Routiere in Nice, you will take bus 82. The bus typically runs about once an hour but can be early/late so give yourself some time. Download and check the Moovit App ahead of time to get the current schedule.

Bus 82 will take you directly to the base of the hill that Eze is built on. If you don’t mind a bit of extra walking, you can get off early at the ‘bella vista’ which is a stunning viewpoint and great photo opportunity. To go back to Nice, take the same bus in the opposite direction. Insider tip: try to get a window seat on the sea side because the views from this bus ride are spectacular.

If you like, you can also take the train from Nice, but it will take you to the beach, Eze sure Mer, which means you will have to hike up the steep hill to explore the town. I suggest you bus to Eze town and then take the train back if you want some beach time. I will discuss this in more detail below.

The Best Things to do in Eze, France

As I said above, Eze is quite small and there isn’t necessarily a ton of things to do in Eze. In my options, it’s best just to go, explore, and see you find. However, there are a few things that you shouldn’t miss on your day trip to Eze.

cobblestone streets in Eze, France

Explore the Narrow Streets

What makes Eze so charming is that is truly looks like a fairytale village perched on a hill. This is because of all the historic buildings and cobblestone streets. You’ll discover viewpoints, flower-filled courtyards, picturesque buildings, and more. Some of the prettiest photo opportunities are by the hotels which tend to have beautiful gates and, of course, many flowers. You can also take a peek into the Eglise Eze (the Eze Church), the Chapelle de la Sainte Croix, and wander through the cemetery. Eze is quite small and you can easily explore these medieval streets in about 30 minutes, so there is no need to rush.

Check out the Shops and Galleries

Eze is very much a tourist town, so there are plenty of little shops, boutiques, and galleries. From clothing to souvenirs and knickknacks, artwork and more, there’s plenty to look at, even if you don’t buy.

Visit the Jardin Exotique (Exotic Gardens)

Considered the highlight or the main attraction of Eze, the Jardin Exotique is located at the very top of the village, perched on the tip of the mountain overlooking the sea. The greenery plus the views make this the perfect place to sit and relax for a little bit (especially after climbing to the top!). There are a couple of shaded areas with chairs for you to enjoy but please make sure to bring some water as it can get incredibly hot up here. Note that there is a small fee to enter (around 6 euro) but it’s worth it as visiting the Exotic Gardens are, without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Eze. I just hope your view is a little less foggy than mine!

Foggy views from the Jardin Exotique in Eze

Have Lunch (or a drink) With a View

The views from the Jardin Exotique are the best, but it’s not the only viewpoint in Eze. As you wander through the streets you’ll find a few, but some of the best places to take in the surroundings are the terraces of Eze’s hotel restaurants. Now, to be clear, pricing here can be on the expensive side. However, if you are up for the experience then consider heading to Chateau Eza or Chateau de la Chevre d’Or to enjoy a meal, or just a drink, on the terrace.

Tour Eze’s Perfume Factories

There are two perfumeries located in Eze; Fragonard and Galimard .

Fragonard is a well known French perfumery with a location in Eze. If you like, there is a free guided tour where you will learn about the process of making the perfume. I did the tour at their location in Paris and really enjoyed it. You can also buy some perfume here if you like. It makes a great souvenir or gift for friends and family back home.

Another perfumery worth visiting in Eze is Galimard Perfumery. You can also see the perfume, as well as soap, production here.

Hike Down Nietzsche Path & Swim at the Beach

Named after a German Philosopher, Nietzsche’s path is a steep but scenic trail that starts by the beach and then climbs all the way up to the village which is 427 meters above sea level. It will take you about an hour to go down and while scenic, is quite steep. Locals told me not to do it since I was only wearing flipflops so if you are looking to hike Nietzsche Path definitely make sure to bring good running shoes!

Once you reach the beach you can swim so plan ahead and bring your swimsuit and a towel. Eze Beach is a rock beach, not a sand beach, but the water is a clear green-blue colour and it’s not nearly as crowded as the ones in Nice which makes it a nice place to stay for a couple of hours. Plus, if you prefer not to hike back up, you can take the train back. The stop is called Eze Sur Mer and is just a couple of minutes walk from the actual beach. It will take you directly back to Nice and it’s quicker than the bus.

  Where to Stay in Eze

Viewpoint of the Chèvre D'ore Eze hotel

Personally, I recommend visiting Eze just as a day trip. It is tiny and touristic which means costs for meals and accommodation can get pretty pricey. However, if you decide you would lie to spend the night in this fairytale village, here are a few options for where to stay in Eze.

La Chevre d’Or

Hotel Arc en Ciel

La Suite du Village d’Eze

Tip: Eze’s hotels book up quickly since there are so few actually in the village. So make sure to book in advance if you have your heart set on spending a night here!

Final Tips for Visiting Eze, France

church in Eze, France

  • Plan your visit around the weather. You need a clear day to enjoy the views, so if it’s cloudy or foggy at all, it’s not worth paying the fee into the gardens as you won’t get the famous view. When I visited some clouds were moving in making it difficult to see, and by the time I left you couldn’t see a thing.
  • You probably won’t need to spend a full day here- you can easily see the highlights in half a day. So, if you are concerned with time, you can pair Èze in a day trip with another coastal village (ie Villefranche for an afternoon at the beach) or, go early in the morning for a couple of hours and spend the rest of the day in Monaco which is nearby.
  • To save money, grab lunch by the bus stop. The restaurants in the village itself are incredibly expensive and not great for budget travellers. I waited until I was done then stopped in at a little café by the bus stop where I grabbed a crepe for only a couple euros.
  • Don’t believe the bus schedule: Time is clearly not of the essence in the French Riviera. It is very common for busses to be late, or sometimes not show at all. Use the bus schedule as a general guideline but don’t plan anything important around it.

Awesome pictures – those views are insane! We haven’t explored much of France but I really, REALLY want to get back. Have only visited Paris at this point, but you’ve made the excellent point that there’s so much more to see than just the capitol!!

Charming little place! I feel like the scenic bus ride was a good omen for the sightseeing. I have not been to this part of France but find the architecture very beautiful. Add Èze to the list 🙂

I absolutely love medieval villages, specially those with breath-taking views such as this one!

Great photos. I studied in Aix-en-Provence in the South of France. It is SO easy to fall in love with this part of France. The fresh food and beautiful coastline and weather! I would love to go back one day.

I can’t believe that the only part of France that I have visited up until now is Paris, and that was only over Christmas last year! And that is from a Brit, just across the English Channel – very sad I know. But no point looking in the past, after reading this post it makes me want to explore the French Riviera and stumble upon such exquisite towns as you did here. Thanks for sharing your insightful experiences with us.

I love the French Riviera! We just visited this summer but I didn’t make it to Eze. This post makes me wish we did…

I will be staying in a hotel in Nice by myself for 2 days between tours. I want to go to Eze and spend the day wandering around and having lunch. Is it a good idea to take anUber or a taxi there, then take one back when ready to go? Are they reasonable and available? Or do most people just book a tour? I have no interest in a perfume factory. Thank you

Hi Julia! Great post thanks for this. We are planning a trip May 2023, will drive to Eze but wondering if parking is an issue if we stay at Chateau Eza, and if we have to carry luggage up many steps from the car? Thanks so much! Grateful for your input.

November 18, 2022 at 3:58 pm

Valerie, are you staying at the Chateau Eza? If you are, they will carry all the luggage for you! We didn't carry anything. We did have the car, but I don't remember if they parked it for us. I don't remember that parking was ever an issue there!

also, here is a short article I wrote about Chateau Eza that you might find interesting:

Yes, there is a lot of climbing at Eze Village - but that's what makes it so beautiful! The village sits on a hilltop of a high cliff about 1,400 feet above sea level - and there are lots of stairs to climb. Something to consider before you go. There are so many other wonderful things to do in Southern France, though, you don't really have to go to Eze Village.

Eze Village overlooking Mediterranean Sea, France

Things to do in Eze, French Riviera’s best kept secret!

Eze is a medieval hilltop village overlooking pristine Mediterranean Sea. While the village is tiny, there are interesting things to do in Eze.

If you want to explore the coastlines and other surrounding villages and towns, Eze is a perfect base. Check out our complete guide on top things to do, where to stay, suggested tours.

Do you dream of visiting sleepy french village with sweeping views of Mediterranean coast, that isn’t as crowded as Cannes or Antibes?

Eze is one such village. Having the beach city Nice on one side and glamorous Monaco on the other side, Eze is a charming medieval village on the hilltop that overlooks Mediterranean Sea.

When we did a bit of research on French Riviera before our travel, we decided that Eze is the place we wanted to spend our wedding anniversary.

Especially after seeing pictures of this gorgeous little village, we could not stop ourselves from going there. It was just perfect. And romantic!

Eze is one of the most beautiful villages that we’ve ever seen, and it’s probably the best place we have spent my wedding anniversary so far.  We had been following the tradition of visiting a mountain or sea every year to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

Where is Eze?

Eze is sandwiched between the two popular places in French Riviera – Nice and Monaco. This tiny village sits on a hill crop overlooking Mediterranean Sea.

How to reach Eze?

The Eze village is connected by bus from all the nearby places like Nice, Monaco, Cannes, Antibes. The bus journey from Nice to Eze takes about 25 minutes.

Alternatively, trains run from Nice to Eze-Sur-Mer, and the beach is only one minute away from the station.  However if you want to visit the Village, it is a bit of an hike.

So, we recommend taking a bus to Eze Village, hike down to Eze-Sur-Mer and catch the train wherever you want to head back. That way, you can save the strenuous hike.

The bus journey from Nice to Eze wasn’t anything ordinary.  As we moved away from Nice, we came closer to the mountains, and the bus crawled like a serpent around the hill, leaving us with magnificent view of mountains on one side and birds eye view of the sea on the other. The views simply took our breath away.

All we could hear was “ooh” and “aww” from rest of the passengers in the bus. Everyone tried to capture the moment through their digital eyes!

After some 25 minutes we reached Eze. A few shops, restaurants, little car park and quite surrounding reminded us that we were certainly away from the hustle and bustle of a city.

Top Things To Do In Eze

1. jardin botanique d’eze.

As we got down from the bus, we noticed everyone walking in the same direction. So, we happily followed them. Our first destination in this village is Jardin Botanique d’Eze .

We were walking uphill passing through the honey dipped houses of Eze Village. We passed through narrow maze type lanes with few souvenir and painting shops in traditional stone houses, followed by restaurants and a beautiful church.

And at last came the garden entrance.A botanical garden located on a steep terrain about 400 meters above the sea level, the garden hosts exotic cactus and succulents that overlooks turquoise Mediterranean coastline.

The garden path was spiral and was more like a 3 tier cake. At each level the view of the vicinity, mountains, Eze village, church and blue sea were spellbinding.  Maybe my pictures might explain them better.

At the end of 3 levels, there’s a rocky terrace for people to laze in and bask under the sun. The weather god was just awesome on that day of our anniversary.

We took off our jackets, put our sunglasses, and just lay there in each other’s arms for sometime.  That moment was simply perfect to be with each other and enjoying the tranquil time on our wedding anniversary. On such a spectacular location.

We let the silence rule us for brief moments, as we basked under the glory of sun.  You know how it will be to sleep with the sun rays falling on your eyes at 1.00 pm?

After some rest and soulful sun-rays hard-hitting our skin, we had our left over snacks and juices. Meanwhile, we took in the views and gave one last look at the sea, the mountains, the cactus, the people and surrounding houses. We mentally bid them goodbye, thanking them for the wonderful time, and started to walk down.

There were good cafes and restaurants in Eze village.  We raised a glass of champagne to celebrate our anniversary, followed by a special customized pizza, Penna Arrabiata and a warm apple cake topped with Vannila icecream.

2. Fragonard Perfume Factory

The village was still abuzz with tourists. We spent the rest of our time looking at the souvenirs, art galleries and boutique shops around, then left to take the free guided tour at Fragonard Perfume factory .

It was a great opportunity to spend some time here for free, and ofcourse, if you like the perfume, there is a shop inside the factory.

3. Galimard Perfume/Soap Factory

Discover each step of the process involved in making perfume at Galimard perfume factory – right from extracting from the flower to production and packaging.

Soak in the unique olfactory experience – a treat to the nostril actually!

The factory also houses soap manufacturing, so you get to see the traditional soap making process and soap production.

4. Nietzsche Path Hike

If you are up for an adrenaline rush, you can hike the Nietzsche Path that connects Eze Village to Eze Sur Mer beach.  This is roughly 5 km distance, steep and strenuous hike uphill.

As I mentioned earlier, it is easier to hike down the route than climbing up. So plan your journey accordingly and wear appropriate shoes.

5. Eze-Sur-Mer Beach

This is one of the loveliest beaches in the French Riviera. The azure blue waters and sandy beach does call for a swim, walk or lay under the sun during the warm days!

Practical Information

  • Eze is well connected from Nice, Monaco and Antibes. These are buses 100, 112, and 82 that stop at Eze Village
  • You can also take the coastal train, which stops at the coast, but it’s a bit of a trek from there to climb up the village.
  • Taxis are overrated, so it is best to avoid them.
  • Some of the souvenir shops are also expensive, so always look out for few shops, compare the price and then buy.
  • There are plenty of restaurants that suit all kinds of budgets.
  • There is also car parking right near the tourist information center but during summer months it does get overcrowded.
  • There are crazy number of poster ads inviting you for a 15 minute Ferrari drive on the coastal mountain roads if you fancy one. Very expensive though.

Where to stay in Eze

Eze is an exotic choice if you are looking for Chateau stays or boutique hotels. However they can be really expensive and accessible only if you have a car.

Our top recommendation is  Eze Hermitage Hôtel . This renovated hotel is one mile from Eze Village, and offers comfortable rooms, pool, garden, breakfast. Dinner options are available too.

Les Terrasses d’Eze – Hôtel & Spa is another luxurious hotel located close to the village centre. Offering rooms with gorgeous views, the hotel also has infinity swimming pool, spa services, restaurant and garden.

Chateau Eza is a chateau converted into hotel, located in the heart of the village. So expect nothing less than pure luxury. Check the trip advisor reviews here .

Alternate places to stay are in Nice or Monaco or Antibes, all of which are well connected by bus service and only 30 minutes away.

Èze Village – The Easiest (and Prettiest!) Day Trip from Nice, France

Èze Village is a Beautiful, Easy Day Trip from Nice, France

Èze is less than ten miles away from Nice, France, but it can feel like a completely different world.  Èze bills itself as “The Village of Art and Gastronomy”, and it’s easy to see why this medieval fortified village adopted that nickname.  The winding stone streets are dotted with hidden Michelin-starred restaurants, former chateaux, creative art galleries, boutique perfumeries and historic monuments dating back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Èze is an easy day trip from Nice, and can be explored in a full day or a half day (depending on how leisurely you lunch!). At minimum, plan for three hours in the village just for sightseeing, and more time if you want to sit down for a meal, tour one of the perfume factories or do any serious shopping.

Things to Do in Èze, France

Tourist Information Office in Èze, Outside Nice, France

On your way into Èze, stop at the Tourist Information Office and pick up a free map of the city, which is marked with the street names and the locations of the main monuments.  There are also clean public toilets here.  From the tourist information office, ascend the stairs and walk across Place du Centenaire to reach the Poterne, a stone archway that marks the entrance to the historic center.

Explore the Medieval Village

Medieval Streets in Èze Village, Cote d'Azur, France

The Èze Village that we can visit today primarily dates back to the late 1300s, when the region was under the control of the House of Savoy (the diamond in their dynasty was the ring of lavish castles they built around one of my favorite Italian cities, Turin ).  Borders at the time weren’t as clearly defined as they are are today, and for centuries France, the Savoys and even the Turks fought for control of this village.  In the early 1700s, Louis XIV (yes, the man behind Versailles) ordered Èze’s fortified town walls to be torn down, leaving the village vulnerable until it officially joined France in 1860.

If you follow the main street, Rue Principal, it will lead you through the village.  Along the way you’ll pass former castles (now converted into hotels, see below if you want to stay overnight), quaint squares, historic fountains, climbing vines and several small churches.  Old stone houses have been converted to art galleries and boutiques selling local wares.  Plan to spend about an hour just wandering through town, and never hesitate to turn down a small alley or climb that hidden flight of stairs!

Visit the Exotic Garden

Views from the Jardin Exotique in Èze Village, Cote d'Azur, France

The highest point in Èze Village is the Jardin Exotique, or Exotic Garden.  This used to be an ancient fortress, from which residents could watch for signs of any incoming invaders, but all that is left of the fortifications are crumbling ruins.  From the panoramic terrace at the top of the gardens you will have the best views of the Cote d’Azur in the region, making this a must-see stop on your trip to Èze.

The gardens open at 9:00 am daily, and close between 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm, depending on the season.  Tickets cost €6, and I recommend buying them from the vending machines you’ll pass in the street on your way to the gardens, as this will save you from having to queue at the entrance. Just make sure to take both your ticket(s) and receipt from the machine before you walk away!

Aside from the great viewpoint, Èze’s Jardin Exotique is roughly split into two sections: one featuring desert fauna, and the other featuring plants more typical to the Mediterranean climate. You’ll want to spend about 45 to 60 minutes in the gardens, which were created in partnership with the same gardener who established the Exotic Gardens in nearby Monaco.

Hike the Chemin de Nietzche

The Chemin de Nietzsche in Èze Village, Cote d'Azur, France

The village of Èze is perched high above the seashore, and in my opinion it’s best reached by car or bus. However, Friedrich Nietzsche would disagree with me, as he found some of his most potent inspiration by walking the rugged trail between Èze Village (on the cliff) and Èze-sur-Mer (on the seashore).

Today, the trail that connects the village and the sea has been renamed in honor of the German philosopher.  It takes about an hour to hike up the trail, or forty minutes to hike down, if you’re an experienced hiker.  Add more time (and more water!) if you’re out of practice.  En route you can detour to a small waterfall, and if you’re hiking down, you can cool off with a dip in the sea at the bottom (no such luck at the top).

The top trailhead is beside the gates to the Chemin d’Or hotel and restaurant, and at the bottom it’s about 200 meters east of the Èze-sur-Mer train station.  Hiking shoes are recommended – definitely do not attempt this trail in sandals.

Visit a Perfume Factory in Èze

Galimard Perfumerie in Èze, Outside Nice, France

Although Grasse is indisputably the perfume capital of France, Èze offers visitors several opportunities to learn more about the art of perfumery.  If you don’t have the time to get out to Grasse, spending an hour or two at Èze’s perfumeries is the perfect compromise, especially for anyone whose interest is only casual.  Choose between a visit to Fragonard or Galimard… or both!

Most touristy cities in France will have at least one Fragonard shop.  This French perfume brand dates back to 1926, and is known for offering a balance of quality and affordability (making Fragonard scents perfect gifts for your friends and family back home).  In Èze, the Fragonard shop holds a secret: hidden behind the storefront is one of their production facilities, and it is open to the public.  You don’t need a reservation to join one of the free factory tours , which are available in English and French.

On the other hand, Galimard has only three shops and three factories, making the brand much more exclusive to the South of France. The free guided tour is similar to that offered at Fragonard, however their Èze location also offers a much more unique experience: a perfume-making workshop where you blend your own custom scent.  Unlike some other perfume-making experiences in France where you have a limited note library to work with, at Galimard you have full access to their library of 127 notes as you craft your custom scent.  You’ll need to book this well in advance, at the link above.

In case you’re curious, my favorite perfume from Fragonard is Belle de Soleil (€46 for 200 ml!), and my favorite perfume from Galimard is their Collection Privée Oud Vanille ( € 220 for 100 ml!).  As you can see, there’s a significant price difference between the two houses!

Hotels in Èze, France

The best hotels in Eze, French Riviera, France

The most famous hotel in Èze is La Chèvre d’Or , a five-star luxury hotel that is popular with celebrities during the Cannes film festival (but that is surprisingly affordable in the shoulder season!).  The perfect splurge for a special occasion, La Chèvre d’Or is situated in the historic center of Èze, in a restored medieval castle. The hotel’s on-site restaurant has two Michelin stars, and the two outdoor pools have unparalleled Mediterranean views.

If luxury isn’t in your budget but you still want to stay overnight in a hotel in Èze, I would suggest starting your search with these properties:

  • Hotel Arc en Ciel – Located at the entrance to Èze Village, this is is a small, no-frills hotel that is perfect if you just need a place to sleep.
  • Chateau Eza – Another upscale property in Èze, this boutique hotel has the town’s second-highest vantage point, offering spectacular views from the rooms and restaurant terrace
  • La Perle d’Eze – For a longer stay in Èze, rooms in this apart-hotel have kitchenettes with a fridge, stovetop, microwave, kettle and more.  Pick up groceries in Nice and then come back here to enjoy your meals on a private terrace with views of the sea or the town.

Restaurants in Èze, France

Èze is best-known for its two Michelin-starred restaurants: La Table de Patrick Raingeard in the Hotel Cap Estel (one star) and the restaurant at La Chèvre d’Or (two stars).  Book online, well in advance, if you want to have a special meal at either.  Otherwise, there are several other restaurants in Èze, including these that are worth a highlight:

  • Deli’ – As its name suggests, this is a little deli in Èze that is popular for its salads, sandwiches and desserts.  It’s perfect for a light lunch or a mid-day snack.
  • Le Cactus Èze Village – An affordable restaurant serving salads, burgers and grilled meats.  They also do typical French breakfasts starting at € 12, if you’re in Èze in the morning.
  • Restaurant Le Mas Provençal – If you need some new content for your Instagram feed, this upscale restaurant at the end of town is certainly Insta-worthy, as its small rooms literally overflow with fresh flowers.  They’re only open in the high season and the set menu (starting at €118) is based on whatever is fresh at the time of your visit.

How to Get to Èze from Nice

Orange Lamborghini in Èze, France

I recommend driving up to Èze in your orange Lamborghini.  If it happens to be in the shop, however, it’s also very easy to take the bus from Nice to Èze.

Buses #82 and #112 travel from Nice’s Vauban bus station along Rue Barla and then out of the city to Èze Village.  Service is relatively infrequent (there could be up to 90 minutes between buses) so plan your route in advance using either Google Maps or the Lignes d’Azur website .

Tickets cost €1.50 and the route is included in your daily or weekly pass if you’ve gone that route (personally I bought the €15 weekly pass as I was in Nice for eight days).  The bus from Nice to Èze Village takes about forty minutes.

Don’t be tempted to take Bus #100, which runs from Nice to Monaco (and back).  Although this is a beautiful bus ride, it doesn’t go up the hill to the village. Instead, this bus stops at Èze-sur-Mer, which is a strenuous one-hour hike away from the hilltop village.  If Monaco is on your itinerary, I have a complete guide to day trips to Monaco from Nice .

I don’t recommend driving to Èze, as the parking is extremely limited and typically fills up very early in the morning.

(In case you’re wondering, that Lamborghini was on its way to La Chèvre d’Or.  I literally held my breath as the hotel’s valet tried to maneuver the Lamborghini around the tight turn in front of the hotel’s gates, narrowly avoiding a Rolls-Royce that was also trying to visit at the same time!)

I recently spent two months exploring the South of France.  Check out my France Page for guides to all of the places I visited and secret tips for making the most of your trip to France.

I also have a new guide to all the best day trips from Nice (including Èze, of course!).

Village of Eze, France – A French Riviera Highlight

Like a phoenix perched on a cliff, the bewitching village of Eze soars high over the Mediterranean, offering some of the best views on the French Riviera.

It’s an ideal place to meander. Red brick paths nestled in stone twirl over ancient ground, leafy vines cling to walls and archways bend over narrow lanes.

Medieval streets in Vieux Eze France

The first time I visited Eze I was 16, and now that I’m, ahem, older , I was curious to see if present-day Eze held up to my storybook vision.

Happily, I liked it even more, probably because I had more time to explore.

Is a Day Trip to Eze Worth It?

Millions of tourists would say yes.

There are a couple of must-see attractions ( the Exotic Gardens! ) but Eze Village is more about enjoying the relaxed pace of the dreamy South of France than seeing Sights with a capital ‘S.”

The views alone are worth the trip. Even the bus ride from Nice is worth the trip as it curves around the Mediterranean coast in scenic splendour.

Whether you’re doing a day trip to Eze or staying overnight, make the most of your trip with this guide to the best things to do in Eze.

It’s got an easy itinerary to follow and lots of how-to’s on what to do and what to see.

How to Avoid the Crowds

The downside of millions of tourists saying yes to Eze is that they may all choose to be there exactly when you are.

Give them the slip: Go early in the morning or stay overnight. Make lunch reservations before you go so you’ll be assured of a table.

But. Even if you end up on a tour in the middle of the afternoon in the height of summer, this thimble-sized French Riviera destination will somehow squeeze you in.

Stone walls and flower pots in the hilltop village of Eze on the French Riviera

Where is Eze?

The village of Eze is in the South of France.

It’s 9 km from Monaco by road (4 km if you’re a phoenix and can fly there) and about 13 km from Nice.

Eze is on the Moyenne Corniche, the middle of three roads of varying heights between Nice and Menton on the French Riviera.

Eze is high. Like 427 metres above sea level (1401 feet) high.

A lofty town on the Cote d’Azur, it’s one of the best day trips from Nice , Cannes, Monaco and other French Riviera destinations.

Eze Village or Eze-sur-Mer?

Opt for Eze Village.

What’s the difference? Eze Village is the medieval town cresting the mountainside. Eze-Bord-de-Mer, also called Eze-sur-Mer, is the beach. While it’s fine, it’s nothing spectacular.

What’s the most exciting thing about Eze-sur-Mer? Bono, lead singer of U2, owns a big pink villa there.

Spectacular view of cliffs and trees from the Chateau Eza a luxury hotel in Eze

How to Get to Eze Village

If you’re not traveling by car or doing a tour, the easiest way to get to Eze Village is to take the bus. The bus drops you off at the base of the village and you will need to walk up. Just follow the crowd.

Nice to Eze: You can take the 82 Bus or the 112 Bus. I caught it from the Nice Boyer Station. It took about 30 minutes.

🌼 Travel Tip: The Nice to Eze bus route is a popular trip and you may not get a seat. For the best chance, you could start your trip off from Vauban Station, though it’s a bit out of the way.

Monaco to Eze: You can take the 112 Bus from the Cremaillere stop in Monaco to Eze Village.

Train to Eze – Not Recommended

Don’t take the train or you’ll end up way down on the coast at Eze-sur-Mer.

If you do end up there you’ll need to either take the 83 Bus up to the village, though it’s not that frequent, or walk up the gruelling Nietzsche Trail, which is only for the fit.

I walked down it, and it took a good hour. It’s a gorgeous walk though.

Sculpture of a female and pink flowers growing out of stone walls

Take a Tour

Most guided tours don’t stop only in Eze but include it in a larger French Riviera itinerary along with other tourist favourites like Nice, Monaco, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Cannes , Antibes, etc.

This means your time in Eze will be limited but it will at least give you a taste of the town.

Full Day Guided Tour

One option that gets good reviews is a Full-Day Tour of Eze and Monaco from Nice in an 8-seater luxury van. From $110 USD.

Check prices and availability for the full day tour here .

Private Tour

If you prefer to be in charge over your itinerary you could try a Private Half Day Tour of the French Riviera in a Vintage Car. From $475 USD for a group up to 4 people.

Check out prices and availability for a private tour here .

View of the Grand Corniche Road from the Exotic Garden

It’s a spectacular drive. Go early to get parking. There is some parking at the base of the village but spots fill up fast.

Things to Do in Eze

When you arrive in Eze, you’ll be at the lower part of the village. There is a tourist information office if you have questions or want to pick up a map.

There are also public toilets (take coins), but they often seem to be closed.

🌼 Travel Tip: If you really need a bathroom, buy a coffee in the restaurant across the street.

1. Tour the Fragonard Perfume Factory

Also at the base of Eze Village is the Fragonard Perfume Factory.

Here you can do a tour and gather up all the rose-and-musk scented souvenirs you can fit in your shopping bag.

🌼 Travel Tip: If you’re on a group tour, don’t spend all your time sniffing scents or you won’t have time to explore the village. If you’re also going to visit Grasse , the perfume capital of France, I recommend skipping the Eze perfumery altogether.

Heading Up to the Main Sights

The main tourist attractions are a few minutes uphill walk from the base. Pass through the fortified gateway, la Poterne , that dates back to the 14th century and voila , you’re in the medieval world of Eze.

🌼 Travel Tip: The Village of Eze is an up and down destination – comfortable shoes will save your soles.

Bird's eye view of Our Lady of the Assumption Church

2. Visit Our Lady of the Assumption Church

My first stop was Our Lady of the Assumption Church, its bell tower rising up like a yellow exclamation mark over the red-tiled roofs of the village.

Neoclassical on the outside, the church is more elaborate inside, a frothy Baroque mix of pastel trompe l’oeil, ornate ceiling paintings and statues.

Built in the 18th century, it was constructed on the foundations of an earlier church.

But its roots as a sacred site go deeper.

The Ancient Roots of Eze

The Phoenicians had a temple on this spot dedicated to Isis, goddess of magic, fertility, healing and rebirth. Yes, Eze is that old. It was inhabited as early as 2,000 BC.

In fact the town’s name of Eze may stem from the word Isis.

In front of the church is a large square with lovely views (you’ll soon see that lovely views are a recurring theme in this guide) and there is a cemetery at the back where the French actor Francis Blanche is buried.

Gnarled tree growing over the cobblestone street in Eze in the South of France

From here you’ll want to wander. Ambling around the winding lanes is pretty much the main thing to do in Eze.

The pedestrian-only streets are a movie-set mix of tumbling flowers, antique signs and stone walls that harbour mouse-sized gift shops and art galleries. It’s a fun place for shopping though not exactly cheap.

Vaulted arch over a cobblestone street in Eze

4. Find the Chapel of the White Penitents

Located under a peach-coloured vaulted arch, the wrought iron doorway to the Chapel of the White Penitents, the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs , is fairly nondescript so you may pass it by. Keep an eye out.

Also called the Chapel of the Holy Cross, this low-key Eze attraction is closed to visitors but you can peek through the grid. The oldest building in Eze, the Chapel of the White Penitents was built in 1306.

It’s interesting for its history: it was the meeting place of the White Penitents, a Christian brotherhood who sought forgiveness for their sins by helping the sick during the plague that was sweeping through Europe.

Lunch of sea bream at the 5 star Chateau Chevre d'or hotel in Eze

5. Have Lunch at the Chèvre d’or

Eze is petite so it won’t take long before you might be thinking of lunch (as long as you can get thoughts of the plague out of your mind).

Dining on the terrace of Les Remparts Restaurant at the 5-star Chèvre d’or Hotel is one of the activities that bumped up my day trip from Nice from fun to fabulous.

Set in a centuries-old castle, the Chèvre d’Or hotel was a favourite vacation spot of Walt Disney’s.

There are two main restaurants in the hotel, the 2-star Michelin Chèvre d’Or Restaurant and Les Remparts, as well as the casual Café du Jardin for lighter fare.

Carol Perehudoff on a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean

Les Remparts is an ideal place to relax.

With sweeping views of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and the sun-dappled sea, I was able to sit back, breathe in the scent of jasmine and enjoy the joie de vivre of the French Riviera, just as Marlene Dietrich, Roger Moore and so many others have done before me.

For lunch I opted for the Sea bream fillet with wood-fired roasted leek, capers and lemon, but the dish most diners looked excited about was the King prawns linguine with courgettes and a bisque enhanced with ginger.

Everyone seemed to opt for one of pastry chef Julien Dugourd’s desserts, mini masterpieces of strawberry, lemon, chocolate or cream.

Plants and a sea view at the Exotic Garden

6. Visit the Exotic Garden

After lunch I was fully fuelled and ready to visit the Exotic Garden of Ez e – the Jardin Exotique d’Èze .

The description – lots of cacti and succulents – doesn’t sound that thrilling.

The reality is that it’s as lush as a cacti garden can be, and unique in its location on a cone-shaped peak that stands at the top of the town.

Flowering cacti, aloe and prickly pear cling to the mountainside in a tangle of blooms, thorns, and waxy leaves.

You’ll find citrus, agave and tree ferns, and stylized bronze and terracotta female figures by sculptor Jean-Phillipe Richard that made me think of Isis.

Have a Lie Down at the Exotic Garden

Wait … what? Yes! How cool is that? There are some sun beds in the Zen Space on the west side of the garden.

The remains of Eze castle at the Exotic Garden

7. See the Ruins of Eze Castle

Slim pathways wind their way between towering cacti up to a square on the peak, where the weathered ruins of a 12th-century castle stand like ghosts of the town’s ancient past.

Built in the 13th century, the castle was destroyed in 1706 on the orders of Louis XIV during the War of Succession with Spain, when Eze was under the rule of the House of Savoy.

From the terrace you’ll get another magnificent viewpoint that stretches all the way from Italy to St Tropez.

A different viewpoint reveals the Grand Corniche, the upper cliff road built by Napoleon. It follows an ancient Roman route called the Via Julia Augusta.

If it’s a clear day the Exotic Gardens are one of the best things to do in Eze.

Chateau Eza Luxury Hotels Eze France

8. Take a Break at Château Eza

If you weren’t lucky enough to score a Zen Bed at the Exotic Garden, there are lots of other places to take a break.

While my heart is wedded to Chèvre d’or, another historic luxury Eze hotel makes use of the town’s dramatic mountainside setting, the 5-star Château Eza.

Once the residence of the Prince of Sweden, Château Eza is 400 years old and the medieval ambience is carefully nurtured.

I would have explored every nook and cranny but I got stopped from wandering around with my camera. Let’s just say security is good.

A cocktail or pastry here won’t come cheap, but small indulgences can be big moments to remember.

Nietzsche Trail hike on a mountainside on the Cote d'Azur

9. Hike Down the Nietzsche Trail

If you like adventure travel, it’s possible to hike down the steep Nietzsche Trail to Eze-sur-Mer.

From here, if you’re traveling by public transportation, you can catch the train back to Nice, Monaco or other places from the bottom.

The trail is named after Friedrich Nietzsche. He was an influential German philosopher who tramped up it daily when he stayed in Eze in the 1880s.

Today the Chemin de Nietzsche is one of the most popular hikes on the beautiful Cote d’Azur.

Rated, moderately challenging, and a bit slippery on the rocks in places, this 4.2 km trail takes a twisted route down the mountainside.

It’s tiring, even going down, so make sure you have the stamina, proper shoes and water. Much of it is in the sun.

Pebbled beach of Eze-sur-Mer

10. Visit the Beach at Eze-sur-Mer

If you do make it down the hill on the Nietzsche Path, you can follow the signs from here to the beach. I met two lovely Swedes on the trail down, and we made our way to the seaside together.

The beach at Eze is rocky and we didn’t have bathing suits, so after posing around for awhile and looking out over the water we ran out of things to do.

Handily, it’s steps to the train station so it was easy to get back to Nice.

Day Trip or Stay Overnight?

How much time to spend in eze.

If you’re doing a day trip to Eze, it depends what you want to do.

If you simply want to walk around, shop and maybe visit the Exotic Gardens, a couple of hours is enough.

If you want to have lunch, tour the perfume factory and hike the Nietzsche Path or visit the beach, you could easily spend the whole day.

When it comes to staying overnight, most people stay only one or two nights, though if you don’t mind that it’s not on the train line, the Village of Eze can be an atmospheric base for exploring various places on the French Riviera.

Cacti at the Eze Gardens along the path

Why Stay in Eze?

The benefits of staying in Eze Village are that you’ll have the town to yourself in the evening and early morning, and will really be able to dig your heels into its dreamy vibe.

On a more basic level, you’ll get the benefit of valet parking if you’re at one of the luxury hotels and won’t have to worry about your car. You’ll still have to walk up from the lower end of the village, though.

The Downside of Staying in the Village of Eze Overnight

Is it too quiet? If you’re after nightlife you’re better off staying somewhere like Monaco or Nice.

There is a lot of uphill and downhill, so if you’re mobility challenged it will be difficult.

Eze is not on the train line so you’re dependent on buses if you don’t have a car. The Sunday bus schedule is limited.

Luxury Hotels Eze

It’s hard to believe a small hilltop town could have two of the best hotels in the French Riviera, but it has long been a destination for celebrities, royalty and rock stars, drawn by its laidback elegance and romantic ‘hideaway’ feel.

It’s also a huge hit as a honeymoon stop for newlyweds touring the French Riviera.

Outdoor swimming pool at the Chateau Chevre d'or hotel

Château de la Chèvre d’or vs Château Eza?

Both hotels get rave reviews.

The Château de la Chèvre d’or has an outdoor pool, is slightly larger (I think about 38 rooms) and feels a bit higher up the ‘sophisticated luxury’ scale.

The Château Eza is intimate with more of a medieval-castle feel.

They are both central and have breathtaking views, though not every room will have them. Ask before you book.

Château de la Chèvre d’or Review

Voted the Best Resort Hotel in France by Travel & Leisure in 2020, the Château de la Chèvre d’or is one of the most romantic hotels on the French Riviera.

The gardens are a delight, a sunny mix of olive trees, lemon trees, sculptures and fragrant jasmine, and the hotel is almost like a little village on its own.

I was thisclose to booking a room here, but ended up staying in Monaco instead. Now that I’ve seen the ‘Golden Goat Hotel’ for myself, I regret not fitting it into my South of France itinerary.

Check prices and availability for the Chateau Chevre d’or Hotel here .

Outdoor terrace overlooking the Mediterranean at the Eze hotel called Chateau Eza

Château Eza Review

The boutique luxury hotel Château Eza has only 14 rooms and suites, so you’ll be sure to get personalized service in a spectacular setting in the very heart of Eze.

Rooms are scattered around the property and, if you opt for one of the sea view rooms, you may never want to leave the room at all, unless it’s to make your way over to the hotel’s Michelin-star restaurant.

Why Visit Eze?

Eze is a French Riviera town that gets better with age.

While it’s sometimes referred to as a museum town, which suggests there are more tourists than residents, it’s one of the top things to do in the South of France with to-die-for views, a hint of glamour and a magic age-old feel.

Hm. Alan, As you know Eze is very hilly and touring it by wheelchair is probably difficult but not impossible. I did see an Eze Wheelchair Accessible Tour awhile back – https://www.accessibleeuropeholidays.com/eze-wheelchair-accessible-tours/ but I don’t know anything about them.

Le Long Weekend

Best Things to Do in Èze, France

The exquisite Côte d’Azur , 115 kilometres (71 miles) of azure Mediterranean coast in the South of France, is a top global leisure and tourist destination. The year-round temperate climate, glittering beaches, turquoise sea, exciting festivals and renowned glitz and glamour attract over 13 million visitors to its beautiful countryside and shores every year.

The region also boasts cultural richness, historical significance, ancient architecture, quaint and picturesque villages, intriguing museums and striking gardens. Some of the best of these are high in the hills, offering breathtaking views of the French Riviera.

One of these hilltop gems is the medieval town of Èze. A sought-after location, away from the bulk of the summer crowds and offering unusual privacy, Èze attractions include appealingly authentic accommodation, a charming beach, a castle and exotic garden, an enticing cemetery, an ancient chapel, pretty winding streets and a heart-stopping view!

Is Èze Worth Visiting?

If you’re based in Nice or Monaco, head to the nearby open-air museum town of Èze for a day trip. Better still, schedule an overnight stay in this small yet magical village to make the most of this unique location. When visiting Èze in France, your trip to this hilltop haven could include a hike, Èze sightseeing, delightful dining, and time at the beach. With so many activities to enjoy and things to see in Èze, what more could you need?

How to Get to Èze

You can get there by car, train or bus.

From Nice , a self-drive will take around an hour, and you’ll need to find parking once you arrive.

However, the most affordable and convenient option is the number 82 bus from Nice (labelled ‘Passage Èze Village’). The trip will take longer than 60 minutes as the bus winds its way slowly up the steep roads. However, the journey allows you plenty of time to relax and enjoy the scenery, especially if you choose a sea-side window seat.

The train is also an enjoyable adventure; however, you’ll alight at sea level and need to hike up the hill to reach the village.

From Monaco, Èze is even closer: 10 minutes by train, 15 minutes by car or 25 minutes by bus (number 112 from Monte Carlo). You can also enjoy a pleasant one-and-a-half-hour walk if you’re up for it!

If you do decide to drive, there are numerous car parks sprinkled around the countryside close to Èze, as you cannot drive into the village itself. The car parks are well signposted and offer a shuttle bus service to the hilltop village.

Where to Stay in When You Visit Eze

If you want to experience Èze without the crowds, the best way is to stay overnight in the village. This way you can appreciate morning walks before the day trippers arrive, or watch the sunset over the village from your own private balcony.

There are only a handful of places to stay in Eze & you can’t go wrong with either of the following centrally located hotels:

La Chèvre d’Or – somewhat of an Eze icon, this 5-star hotel boasts the best views over the Cote d’Azur. Enjoy your own slice of Eze by wondering the private gardens, swimming in the cliffside pool, or eating in any of the on-site restaurants.

Chateau Eza – Offering beautifully decorated rooms in a traditional setting, this 5-star property also boasts sea views from the restaurant, and on-site spa services.

Top Things to Do in Èze Village in France

With the village being so compact, it’s easy to explore on foot, and at leisure. However, if you’re wondering what to do in Èze village, and its surrounds, here are some of our favourite activities and places to visit in Èze.

Preview the View of Èze From the ‘Bella Vista’

best places to visit in eze france

Before you even get to Èze, if you’re driving, be sure to pull over at the well-known viewing point, the Bella Vista, or get off the bus a stop early. There’s a short walk into the village, but it’s worth it.

From here, you can take in the view of Èze itself and the vast expanse of the stunning Côte d’Azur . As you near Èze, there’s a bridge to cross, with the village of Èze on your right.

Enjoy the Enchanting Village of Èze

best places to visit in eze france

This authentically medieval village offers an inspiring walk through its maze of narrow streets between traditional yellow-hued stone buildings. When you park your car or alight at the entrance, make sure you have your camera ready to make the most of every small and delightful detail.

A likely high point of your holiday, the destination is literally a high point of the French Riviera, often described as an ‘eagle’s nest’ thanks to being positioned on a cliff 427 metres or 1401 feet above the shining Mediterannean.

The area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, including by the Moors and Romans, and fortified by the House of Savoy. With the oldest building in the village dating to 1308, being surrounded by 700-year history will take your breath away. Take this in while you meander through the enchanting village to the garden at the top of the hill and perhaps the best views in the South of France.

Feast Your Eyes on, and in, L’Eglise d’Èze

best places to visit in eze france

The striking Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption is a neo-classical 18th-century catholic church on the Place de l’Église that can be seen for miles around. Once inside, the exquisite interior is fascinating. Look out for the Egyptian cross, reminding visitors of the original Phoenician temple built here to honour the goddess Isis, to whom, it’s told, the town owes its name.

Plan to spend a little time in this tranquil location, enjoying the beauty and splendour of the interior or meditating in the church’s peaceful and comforting ambience.

Survey a Riveting Vista From Le Jardin Exotique d’Èze

best places to visit in eze france

The Exotic Garden, also called the Jardin Botanique d’Èze, is located on the Place du Général de Gaulle, built atop the ruins of a castle.

This aptly named garden contains an intriguing collection of gorgeous succulents and cacti, including indigenous varieties and exotics from as far away as the Americas and Africa. The garden’s star attraction is an imposing 13-metre cactus weighing one ton. Designed and created after the Second World War in 1949, the park is situated on a steep slope dipping over 400 metres to the Mediterranean.

You’ll find strategically positioned signs displayed around the gardens detailing the history of some of the sights, helping the garden double up as a fresh-air museum. The striking site also offers a rocky terrace with thoughtfully placed chairs and sunbeds for visitors to relax and bask in the sun. So, take your time and enjoy.

best places to visit in eze france

In addition, being at the top of the hill, the views from the tiered garden with its spiralling path are panoramic and spellbinding, making the hike up the hill well worth it. From here, you can see the second most expensive residential area in the world after Monaco – Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, and even the silhouette of distant Corsica .

Pay Your Respects at Cimetière de Èze

Adjacent to the garden is a small but picturesque cliffside cemetery. Accessed through a rusty metal gate, this tiny graveyard houses gravestones and mausoleums, a peaceful location to spend a few hours during your Èze stay. Albeit the site is highly photogenic, please note that taking photographs inside the cemetery is not allowed.

From here, start making your way back down through the village.

Don’t Miss Out on the Chapelle de la Sainte Croix

best places to visit in eze france

The 14th-century Chapelle de la Sainte Croix is the oldest building in Èze, with architecture particular to when Èze was part of the Republic of Genoa. It was also where the brotherhood of the White Penitents of Èze would meet. The members of this lay order were tasked with providing medical assistance to the poor, caring for the sick, including lepers, and burying the dead. In Èze, they are renowned for assisting plague victims while wearing their signature white balaclavas and robes.

With its pebble mosaic porch, high alter and unusual Catalan crucifix representing the smiling Christ, this ancient chapel is a must-see for visitors. However, while the Èze church is hard to miss, the Chapelle de la Sainte Croix is easy to overlook as you explore the village. It’s located in a tunnel near the end of the Chemise de Chapelle, so keep an eye out for it on your wanderings.

Shop for Souvenirs, Savour Delicacies, and Stay Cool in Èze

best places to visit in eze france

After exploring and getting to know the village, it’s time for some rest, refreshments, art appreciation and retail enjoyment. As Èze has few residents, most of the town comprises appealing restaurants, hotels, boutique shops and art galleries.

Browse and shop for clothes, gifts or souvenirs, or enjoy some window shopping. Look out for quaint, low ceilinged stores, such as the Goat Cavern, where you can’t stand up straight. This quirk is thanks to the first floor historically providing accommodation for donkeys and goats while the second floor housed the humans (one of the many interesting facts you’ll learn in the Exotic Garden).

best places to visit in eze france

The local and hotel restaurants offer high-quality cuisine but can be pricey. However, for an iconic Èze dining experience, head to the Chateau Èze with its Michelin star restaurant, the two Michelin-star Les Remparts at Chateau of the Golden Goat (Château de Chèvre d’Or), or Le Nid d’Aigle.

Alternatively, if you’re on a budget, stock up on refreshments at the station and enjoy a picnic at any of Èze’s scenic locations. However, look out for gelaterias, such as at Le Glacier D’Èze at 10 Rue Plane, for affordable, delicious ice-creams, essential in the height of summer.

Breathe in the Scents of Èze’s Fragrant Perfumeries

best places to visit in eze france

For an informative and entertaining olfactory experience, you can also visit the Galimard perfume and soap factory or the Fragonard perfume factory , both open year-round.

Here you can enjoy a free tour of traditional scent and soap-making processes and stop to purchase a gift or keepsake from the onsite shop. The stunning premises blend ancient and modern, providing quality parfums, Eaux de cologne, Eaux de parfums, and gift-worthy home and bathroom scents.

Experience the Rugged and Romantic Nietzsche Path

best places to visit in eze france

After exploring the village, you may be wondering what else to do in Èze, France. In that case, just off the Avenue du Jardin Exotique, you’ll find the start of the Nietzsche trail, one of the most enjoyable experiences in the area.

This five-kilometre-long fairytale path down to the beach is truly magical. It’s named after the famous German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who came to the region after suffering a deterioration in his health. The beauty and impact of the route restored him to wellness and helped him realise some of his most radical ideas, eventually inspiring the third section of his novel, Thus Spoke Zarathustra . The philosopher and writer claimed it was on this mountain path that ‘his creative energies flowed most abundantly’.

However, do be aware that the trail is steep and can be strenuous, so it’s best hiked downhill. The route takes at least an hour and requires sturdy walking shoes and adequate water.

Cool Down in the Welcoming Waters of Plage d’Èze

best places to visit in eze france

At the end of the Nietzsche trail, follow the signs to ‘La Plage’, and you’ll come to the beautiful local beach.

By now, you’ll be ready for a cool and inviting dip in the crystal-clear, calm water, ideal for swimming and watersports. This charming, family-friendly beach offers a lifeguard in summer and convenient toilet and shower facilities. In addition, running along the Avenue de la Liberté, the area provides access to restaurants for beach-side snacks and dining. Beyond the public access beach, two beach clubs provide parasols and sunbeds. Alternatively, although a verdant row of pine trees offers some shade, bring your own towels or picnic blankets as the pebbly beach can get hot.

Finally, with your dreamy day in Èze coming to a satisfying end, instead of returning uphill along the challenging Nietzsche path, make your way towards the beach club and through a tunnel to access the main road to the village. From here, walk up to retrieve your car or catch bus number 82 or 112 back to Nice or Monte Carlo. Note that, although the train is not ideal for arriving, it’s perfect for travelling back to your base, as the station is near the beach.

This perfect Mediterranean village is tiny and compact; you don’t really need to stick to an itinerary of things to do in Èze. Instead, you can see the whole medieval town in 30-minutes. Or, you can take hours to experience and digest each stunning, historic location listed above. Either way, don’t forget your comfy walking shoes, hat, sunblock and camera, and always carry water.

So visit Èze in France, and prepare to relax and be charmed. For, as Friedrich Nietzsche said of his time in Èze, ‘one could often have spotted me dancing: at that time I could wander through the mountains for seven or eight hours at a time without tiring. I slept well. I laughed a lot—I was fit as I could be, and I was patient.’

Eze travel guide

Visit Eze (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France)

The medieval village of Eze is perched high on a hill above the French Riviera in south-east Provence from where it has lovely views along the coast and out across the sea. The village is included as one of our favourite villages in Provence .

Although it is very close to the Mediterranean, including the resort at Eze-sur-Mer, because of its geographical position the village takes about 20-30 minutes to reach by car from the coast.

Exploring Eze

France This Way review: in our opinion Eze is one of the most beautiful villages in France and an unmissable highlight of a visit to south-east France. Due to the charm of the village, its tropical garden, and its proximity to the major resorts of the riviera such as Nice, it is true that Eze attracts a lot of visitors and can get quite crowded but that does not detract from the pleasure of a visit.

The whole medieval village is pedestrianised so you will need to park in the car park below. Next to the car park you can also find the Eze tourist office. The tourist guide have a useful map to help you explore and with information about the monuments to look out for in the village.

Village from across the valley

As you walk up the hill towards the village you can see the church on the hill ahead of you, and you soon enter the narrow paved streets of the historic centre through the postern, a 14th century gate through the walls that protected the village in the 16th century.

There are numerous streets and alleys to explore in Eze itself, with another beautiful courtyard or picturesque house to be seen and photographed around every corner. Many of these houses are now shops, restaurants or art galleries.

I will not try to explain how you should navigate the labyrinth of streets because it would be too confusing, but I do recommend that soon after entering the village you take a walk along Rue du Barri, a quiet street to the left that leads to the Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or hotel: it is easy to miss this street and is one of our favourites in Eze.

From here just keep walking up hill and exploring the many alleys and staircases and you will discover most of the places of interest sooner or later! These include the Chapel of the Penitents Blancs, built at the beginning of the 14th century and the oldest building in the village and the Porte des Maures, a gateway out of the other side of Eze next to the Chateau d'Eza.

The streets around Place Francis Blanche are very picturesque and with several cafes and art galleries and the many plants and bouganvillea flowers, the small fountains and interesting windows and doorways all add to the charm of the village.

The rather orange church on the edge of Eze old village was built from 1764 - 1772 and has a neo-classical facade. The relatively plain exterior conceals an impressive interior where you can see several interesting decorative features including paintings and frescoes.

The village is not listed among the plus beaux villages in France which includes about 170 of the most attractive villages in France. Of these we have visited more than 100 and believe that Eze should be in the top 10, not omitted altogether!

Exotic garden of Eze

France This Way review: don't visit Eze and choose not to pay to enter the gardens, you don't know what you will be missing! On a clear sunny day this will be the best six euros you spend all visit!

When you get close to the top of the village you will see the entrance to the exotic gardens which have been established in the ruins of a medieval castle. Although little remains of the castle itself, the semi-tropical gardens are superb and the views across the village rooftops and the coast are exceptional and more than worth the admission price.

The gardens include a wide range of cactuses and succulent plants and areas for rest and relaxation as well as a large Mediterranean garden. At the top of the garden you reach the belvedere and the best viewpoint of all across the rooftops of the village and the Mediterranean. From here you might also notice the small belltower above the rooftops - this is the small Chapel of Penitents Blancs. See Exotic garden of Eze for details.

Eze parking

We visited Eze in March and the village was already very busy and parking was difficult. We visited again at the end of May and parking had not got any easier! The car park is quite small and there is nowhere to park on the streets heading out of the village.

We suggest you (1) arrive early (before 10.00 am) or (2) expect to drive around the car park for a while searching for a space or (3) arrive by bus, from one of the nearby resorts along the coast or (4) you can walk here from Eze-sur-Mer on the coast, although this is a steep and hot walk

Even better, you could stay in the village. There are two exceptional hotels in Eze: you will see lovely gardens of the Chèvre d'Or as you climb towards the village and the Chateau Eza is a little further. These would be a magnificent way to enjoy the village, but are rather expensive. See Eze hotels for these (and others that are less expensive) in and near the village.

Attractions nearby

On the edge of Eze (just below the old town and hill) you can visit the laboratory-factory of Fragonard, one of the leading producers of perfume in France. A visit is free and the site is open every day of the year.

At nearby La Turbie you can see the 2000 year old Trophy of the Alps: La Turbie is on the corniche road that follows the coast of the Riviera and has beautiful views across the Mediterranean.

On the coast we suggest a visit to Villa Ephrussi on Cap Ferrat . Another attractive medieval village in the region is Roquebrune , and within easy reach you will find many other famous destinations such as Nice and Monaco .

You can find more travel ideas in the Alpes-Maritimes guide and the Provence guide .
