Telluride Horror Show in Telluride, Colorado

A mountain resort town may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think Halloween but Telluride has quite the horror show to offer. Founded in 2010, Telluride Horror Show is the state's first and longest-running film festival dedicated to the horror genre. With the festival also including flicks in dark fantasy, sci-fi, suspense, dark comedy, and thriller, it definitely covers the scope of what horror films can be. Averaging over 20 feature films and more than 60 short films, guests of the festival can expect special programs, events, and industry guests. One such example? A Nightmare Before Christmas director, Henry Selick, spoke at 2015's festival and confirmed that the Tim Burton-produced classic is, in fact, a Halloween movie, not a Christmas movie.

The Louisville Zoo Halloween Party in Louisville, Kentucky

Head to the " World's Largest Halloween Party " this fall for a kid-friendly Halloween experience at the Louisville Zoo. Party goers will also find costumed characters for meet-and-greets and plenty of trick-or-treating opportunities along the zoo paths. Bringing a child with a food allergy? The zoo has that covered with their allergy-friendly night, which features peanut-free treats, more non-food goodies than any other night such as stickers, bracelets, and pencils, and the "Switch Witch" will be around to help kids swap any treats of concern for a safer option.

Haunted Happenings in Salem, Massachusetts

October is when Salem is at its peak for tourism so it's no surprise that there are a number of events for you to enjoy. Haunted Happenings is an annual celebration of Halloween and fall in New England ; individual events aren't organized by one entity but rather by a collection of timely Halloween festivities for every age. Catch a mix of classic horror films and submitted short and feature length films, lectures, and some of your favorite horror icons from over the years at Salem Horror Fest ; dig into the city's witchy past and present with The Festival of the Dead ; or join the Haunted Happenings Grand Parade presented by the Salem Chamber of Commerce . Whatever frightening adventures you seek, you're bound to find it in Salem.

A Colonial Halloween in Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown, Virginia

One of the best ways to enjoy Halloween is to head back in time. Just as you'll find plenty of horror in the Victorian era (Dracula or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for example), the colonial era has its share, too—it's when the Salem Witch Trials took place, after all. For those willing to venture into a spirit world of old , the Virginia communities of Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown should be on your list. Part of America's Historic Triangle , the three communities have Halloween events that addresses everyone in the family. Elementary-school-age children explore haunted settings and go trick-or-treating at Family Frights in Jamestown, celebrate fall and hear stories of ghostly encounters in Yorktown , or sit in on a Halloween-themed museum talk at the Haunting on D.O.G. Street in Williamsburg. Want more scares? Head over to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg for the annual Howl-O-Scream , for elevated haunted houses, scare zones, and live entertainment. Parents should note the theme park is kid-friendly until 5 p.m.

Halloween at the Theme Park in Orlando, Florida

Orlando has been a top destination for families for years; it shouldn't be any different on Halloween. The city offers two events worth noting, one at Walt Disney World Resort and the other at Universal Orlando. Universal's Halloween Horror Nights runs early September through early November and with its haunted houses, scare zones, attractions, and live entertainment, there's certainly no shortage of scare opportunities. But if you're going to Orlando with kids, the full-force terror at Universal may not be the most family-friendly. Instead, head over to Walt Disney World Resort for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party ! Running from mid-August to early November, kids can enjoy the holiday without being overwhelmed by the more terrifying parts of Halloween. Fun for kids includes trick-or-treating, Disney character meet-and-greets, stage performances, and fireworks.

Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, N.Y.

While it may be too much for the faint of heart, many historic cemeteries around the country offer year-round tours and events celebrating their long histories, the notable names that reside there, and the astounding architecture that gives each cemetery its uniqueness. An annual fall event at Green-Wood Cemetery , discover ethereal sights and sounds while walking winding paths lit by candles and moonlight at "Nightfall" where you'll find films projected onto mausoleums, Victorian-era circus acts, musicians, and storytellers. While the event is two nights only, you can also go on one of the multiple tours being held on Halloween night.

The resting place of greats such as artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, versatile musician Leonard Bernstein, and FAO Schwarz founder Frederick August Otto Schwarz, the long list of famous names and nature of Green-Wood including bird watching opportunities, and over 500 species, varieties or cultivars of trees and woody plants, there's plenty of reasons to visit the cemetery at any point in the year.

Famous Haunts in South Dakota

If you haven't thought of South Dakota as a destination for Halloween fun, there are a number of events that'll make sure you keep the Midwestern state on your radar.

For amateur ghost hunters, scout these four events that allege bring you closer to the paranormal. Lodge at Rapid City's Hotel Alex Johnson , a historic inn said to be one of the most haunted hotels in the country, where you can hunt for ghosts with their Ghost Adventure package that includes accommodations in a reported haunted room or tour the Adams House with a team of professional paranormal researchers. Go back in time to the wild west in Deadwood , where you may meet the lingering spirits of Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane at Mount Moriah Cemetery or visit the Sica Hollow State Park and walk the "Trail of Spirits" where the supernatural presence is said to be strong.

For more kid-friendly experiences, you and your children can take a guided night hike along a path lit by jack-o-lanterns painted by Custer Elementary School students at the Halloween Night Hike in Custer State Park , explore the Extinct Species Graveyard at ZooBoo , a three-night Halloween party at the Great Plains Zoo , create Halloween-themed science and art projects at the Washington Pavilion's Spooky Science , or attend the annual Harvest Halloween for fall and Halloween-themed fun in downtown Yankton, South Dakota.

Initially, the celebrations started to keep the city's youth from committing harmful pranks and other shenanigans.

The Halloween party kicks off on All Hallow's Eve with bonfires, parades, scavenger hunts, scarecrow contests, and about every activity you could conjure. While a large portion of the world considers Halloween to be largely for children, Americans of all ages take the holiday very seriously.

Starting as early as September, cities begin hosting their favorite eerie events designed to celebrate all things spooky – and most everyone takes part.

Across the USA this haunted season, you can discover Halloween events that are equal parts charming and creepy. Here are some of our favorite places to celebrate all things ghostly, macabre and just plain fabulous.

The Annual Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor, Croton-on-Hudson, New York

Sleepy Hollow, New York

Penned by Washington Irving in 1820, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” has permeated popular Halloween culture for literally centuries. Lucky for us, the town at the center of the story is very real and comes alive for a month-long Halloween celebration.

Take a tour of the historic cemetery by lantern light to learn about Irving and other notable citizens, or head over to the historic Philipsburg Manor, which is converted into a terrifying haunt known as Horseman’s Hollow .

If pumpkins are your thing, don’t miss the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze , which features over 7000 carved gourds, the Museum of Pumpkin Art and even a pumpkin windmill.

Revelers during the Haunted Happenings Grand Parade, Salem, Massachusetts, USA

Salem, Massachusetts

As the epicenter of the grim witch trials of the late 1600s, Salem , Massachusetts , sits at the heart of the country’s most visceral Halloween lore. Its heritage played a starring role in the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus , and its fame has led people from all over to make the pilgrimage to this haunted spot year-round.

Visiting Salem during October, however, delivers a special type of energy, as the town embraces the year’s biggest opportunity to delve into its history. Take a candle-lit haunted tour of the city; visit the Witch Trials Memorial and the Salem Witch Museum ; dive into the world of the unknown at the Psychic Fair and Witchcraft Expo ; and top it all off by attending the annual Witches Ball , a masquerade held at the historic Hawthorne Hotel .

A large float with a huge Dracula figure at the front is illuminated by a strong of light bulbs. People dressed in elaborate costumes throw items off the float to people on the street.

New Orleans, Louisiana

It’s no secret that New Orleans can throw a party like nowhere else – a talent that’s not limited to Mardi Gras in February. Many regard the city as one of the most haunted in the country: ghost tours abound throughout the year, making Halloween a particularly important time here. Hit the French Quarter during October for a supernatural celebration called  Krewe of Boo! , which brings Mardi Gras–esque flair to the spooky season.

The parade features what New Orleans does best – with a ghoulish twist: think hand-crafted floats, costumed bands, dancers and even beads (locally sourced and make an effort to be environmentally friendly). The Krewe also hosts an annual Zombie Run , where zombies take to the streets like a scene out of World War Z .

Revellers march in costumes during the 49th Annual Halloween parade in Greenwich Village, New York, New York, USA

New York, New York

Head to any US city with an art-house movie theater in October and you’ll find a live-action showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show , complete with costumes, props, callbacks from the audience and a three-dimensional cast shadowing the on-screen antics.

This tradition began in  New York City at the now-defunct Waverly Theater – and continues today through the work of the  NYC Rocky Horror  troupe. Check their website to see where they’ll be doing the “Time Warp” next.

While you’re in town, don’t miss the famous Village Halloween Parade , famed for its creativity and sheer size. Watch (or join in!) as giant puppets make their way through the neighborhood, and costumed revelers jam to dozens of ambulatory bands playing music of all genres.

A green witch float in the Sea Witch Festival parade, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, USA

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Not all witches dwell on land, it turns out. If your vibe skews nautical, don your seaweed and celebrate Halloween with your seafaring brethren at the Sea Witch Festival in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware . Festivities include Halloween staples like a parade and costume contest, but also ocean-inflected events like a haunted bonfire, coastal wildlife seminars, a trick-or-treat for kids on the beach, and a scavenger hunt for the sea witch herself.

Halloween celebrations in big cities can absolutely be a blast—there's no denying that. But, in our humble opinion, the best Halloween towns in America are small towns. With historic homes, ghost stories, and tall tales passed down from generation to generation, no one sets the mood quite like 'em. There's also something incredibly special—and dare we say a little spooky—about spending the night of October 31st far away from the bright lights and crowded streets of more populous locales, and that's precisely why we've rounded up the best small towns to celebrate in right here.

And parents, you'll want to pay special attention: Our list includes dozens of family-friendly Halloween activities. In fact, if you've got your little ones dressed up in their Halloween costumes for kids and don't want to risk scaring them in the slightest, nearly all of these places are safe bets. Halloween bake-offs, tractor shows, and other fall-inspired games and shows are just a few of the less scary options that await you. So go forth and find your perfect small town destination for this Halloween!

A spookier season: These 10 states are the most Halloween-obsessed in the US, survey shows

best states to visit during halloween

What makes a truly festive Halloween season? Is it the elaborate costumes, the stashes of candy, the thrill of haunted houses, the glow of a carved jack-o'-lantern? Or maybe the chilling decorations, horror-movie watch parties and the thrum of the Monster Mash playing on repeat.

Whatever your favorite part of the spooky season happens to be, there is no shortage of places to visit and get your ghoul on. If you're a huge Halloween aficionado, however, you may have already exhausted all the corn mazes, haunted hayrides and costume parties in your local area.

You may have even explored all the epicenters of local lore and sneaked through an allegedly haunted house or tunnel or two. With some time still left in October to make the most of All Hallows Eve, thrill seekers may look outward for a few fresh experiences. The truly dedicated may even ramp up for a haunted road trip for some nearby scares.

If you're looking for the best spots to swing by and celebrate before the skeletons come down and the candy corn is packed away, check this list of the top 10 Halloween-obsessed states in the U.S.

Top five Halloween hotspots of 2023

In a report compiled by ConsumerAffairs researchers , Halloween cheer is put to the test through a series of 10 different metrics. The methodology, which can be read in full on ConsumerAffairs' website , took into account Halloween-themed online activity and local Halloween attractions.

Using population data from the U.S. Census Bureau to calculate per-capita stats in each state, they gave each a score out of 10. Halloween-related local attractions in each state made up 60% of the score, including scores for number of haunted attractions per capita, pumpkin patches per capita and number of Spirit Halloween stores per capita.

YouTube and Google Trends searches accounted for 15% and 25% of the scores, including inquiries for Halloween music, Halloween decorations, costumes, movies, candy, crafts and pumpkin spice lattes. These scores were all weighted and added together to create a total Terror Tally for each state.

#1. New Hampshire

With states like Massachusetts (hello, Salem!) and Texas (with a huge list of ghost sighting) on the map, the location of the 2023 Halloween headquarters may come as a surprise.

New Hampshire topped the list with a huge number of corn mazes, pumpkin patches, ghost tours, haunts and costume stores. In fact, Spirit Halloween seems to have turned the state into a sort of mecca, with 16 stores serving the state's 1.4 million residents.

Pumpkin festivals in Keene and Milford, the Spookville Haunted Trail in Nashua and the graveyard tour at Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough are among the most beloved attractions.

  • Number of haunted attractions:  12
  • Number of pumpkin patches:  29
  • Number of Spirit Halloween stores:  16
  • Most popular Halloween decoration:  Bats
  • Most haunted town:  Claremont

If you've read or watched a few Stephen King works in your time, you've consumed something spooky set or written in the state of Maine. New England is known for old structures and historic locations thanks to its significance in American history and Maine is certainly no exception.

Maine embraces this reputation and so do its residents, according to ConsumerAffairs' research. Mainers love to celebrate with Halloween crafts and their home state boasts the most pumpkin patches per capita.

Classic horror fans can visit the house of the king himself with tours of Stephen King's Derry, Maine (a real tour for King's fictional interpretation of Bangor). You can even stop by King's house itself. Of course, with such a rich history, there are also plenty of haunted walking tours that meld fun and a little bit of education.

  • Number of haunted attractions:  11
  • Number of pumpkin patches:  59
  • Number of Spirit Halloween stores:  5
  • Most popular Halloween decoration:  Black cat
  • Most haunted town:  Sanford

In Utah, it's all about the scary movies. This makes sense, considering several of the "Halloween" flicks were filmed in the state.

Google search data shows that Utahns search “Halloween movies” more than any other state’s residents. Those looking for costumes of their favorite horror villains and heroes will likewise have no issue, since Utah also boasts the second-highest number of Spirit Halloweens per capita.

Utah also boasts a number of unique haunted houses and attractions, including the Strangling Brothers Haunted Circus, the Fear Factory in Salt Lake City and Kuwahara's Pumpkin Patch & Thriller Park.

  • Number of haunted attractions:  28
  • Number of pumpkin patches:  24
  • Number of Spirit Halloween stores:  27
  • Most haunted town:  Midvale

Idahoans indulge in all of the most iconic components of the holiday, showing a love for Halloween decorations, movies, music, crafts and candy at a rate higher than the national average.

Idaho goes in extra hard on the paranormal side of things, filling the state with festivals, parades, ghost tours, hayrides, paranormal events and more.

Ghost hunters can visit the Haunted Mansions of Albion, the Old Idaho Penitentiary or the Idaho State Tuberculosis Hospital in search of proof of the great beyond.

#5. West Virginia

Rounding out the top five is West Virginia, a state delighted by decorations. West Virginians search for "Halloween music” on YouTube the most of any state and likewise search Google for “Halloween decorations” at a higher rate than any other state.

They also have the second-highest online interest in Halloween costumes and Halloween movies, after Kentucky and Utah, respectively.

West Virgina is home to one of the most infamous haunted locations in the U.S., the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, which does offer tours. Other notable attractions include Miller’s Nightmare Haunted Farm in Lewisburg and Fear on the Farm in Winfield.

Rounding out the top 10 spooky states for Halloween lovers

These states didn't quite make the top five, but they still placed in the list of the spookiest locations.

  • Kentucky scored high in searches for Halloween candy, decorations and costumes. Kentuckians sure love a good dose of holiday shopping!
  • Vermont is known for beautiful scenery and outdoor activities, so it may come as no surprise that there are an abundance of pumpkin patches to visit here. Vermonters also enjoy setting the spirit with Halloween music and candy.
  • Indiana likes a little bit of everything, especially some good ol' fashioned dressing up.
  • South Dakota is full of haunted houses and pumpkin patches, two Halloween classics. The state's residents also like to make merry by throwing on some mood music and getting to work on crafts.

2. Journey to Halloweentown in St. Helens, Oregon

Towns to Visit for Halloween Season: St. Helens, Oregon

Looking for the best Halloween towns in the US? How about the actual Halloweentown? If you’ve always wanted to pretend to be a Cromwell, you’ll light up with joy when you see that iconic jack-o’-lantern in front of City Hall, just like you remember from the beloved Disney classic “Halloweentown.”

St. Helens is so proud of being the home of Halloweentown that it throws an annual festival called the Spirit of Halloweentown , running from mid-September all the way to Halloween. But if you want to see the giant pumpkin illuminated, you’ll have to arrive on October 1, when the jack-o’-lantern is lit right after the Big Halloween Parade.

The celebration mainly takes place over the weekends throughout September and October, with special events happening every Saturday and Sunday. Check out haunted attractions, meet creepy and magical characters, and take specialty tours with a Halloween theme.

But “Halloweentown” isn’t the only movie that has filming locations in town. “Twilight” shot several scenes in St. Helens. Throughout the Spirit of Halloweentown events, you’ll be able to meet actors from both franchises. Be sure to secure your tickets early to be able to get a photo with these casts of characters.

3. Go to Orlando, Florida, for Frightful Fun

Best Halloween Towns to Visit: Universal Orlando

As the Theme Park Capital of the World, Orlando is one of the best places to spend Halloween in the US because there’s something for everyone. Two of Orlando’s biggest parties couldn’t be more opposite.

Step inside Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights and enter a world of nightmares around every corner. This Halloween festival is not for the faint of heart, and please leave young kids with a babysitter because no one is safe here.

Even if you decide not to enter one of the 10 exquisitely decorated haunted houses featuring franchises like “Chucky,” “The Last of Us,” and “Stranger Things,” you’ll still be subjected to multiple scare zones, where creatures will come out of the mist to scare you out of your wits.

Be on the lookout for the roaming hordes of characters, including the Death Eaters from “Harry Potter” and the terrifying M3GAN robots from 2023’s breakout horror hit of the same name (who have some pretty impressive dance moves). You never know where they’ll pop up.

Traveling with little ones or just not so into getting scared repeatedly throughout the night? Check out Walt Disney World’s aptly named Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party . Running from mid-August to November 1, this party’s most frightening feature is the Headless Horseman, who always starts the Boo-to-You Parade, taking place twice per night. But you can always close your eyes when he arrives.

The rest of the evening in Magic Kingdom will be spent going on Halloween-themed rides, watching fireworks with projections on Cinderella Castle, seeing a musical extravaganza starring the Sanderson Sisters from “Hocus Pocus,” and dining on ghoulishly good specialty treats. And everyone is invited to go trick-or-treating throughout the park.

4. Look Out for the Headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow, New York

Best Cities for Halloween in the US: Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow is appropriately named as it’s a sleepy little village in New York’s Hudson Valley. It’s particularly beautiful in the fall when the leaves change color and make it look like something out of a painting – or perhaps out of a story.

This scenic spot is one of the best Halloween towns, as it’s the setting for “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. And many events in and around Sleepy Hollow embrace their spooky status.

Best Towns for Halloween in the US: Sleepy Hollow

Over in Croton-on-Hudson, you can see over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins against the backdrop of Van Cortlandt’s 18th-century estate at the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze . Or explore Rockefeller State Park Preserve with Hulda’s Night , where you’ll listen to local legends in the real woods of Sleepy Hollow, including the story of Hulda herself, the famous witch of the village.

You can also go on several tours of haunted establishments in and around Sleepy Hollow, like the Tarrytown Music Hall , the Lyndhurst Mansion , or Sleepy Hollow’s cemeteries . Or experience the story of Sleepy Hollow in a new way with the Legend Cirque .

If you’re wondering where to celebrate Halloween in the US, New Orleans is the perfect pick if you’re looking for a truly spooky experience. Long considered one of the most haunted places in the US, New Orleans is filled with ghostly attractions all year round, but there’s no better time for frightening fun than Halloween.

If you don’t have your own ghost encounter in New Orleans, you can always guarantee a terrifying time at one of the city’s haunted houses, like The Mortuary , frequently voted as one of the most frightening haunted houses in the US.

6. Celebrate Neewollah in Independence, Kansas

Independence takes Halloween very seriously. After all, their Halloween celebration, Neewollah , is Kansas’s biggest annual festival. Neewollah, Halloween spelled backward, began back in 1919 and was inspired by a desire to take the trick out of trick-or-treating. The festival was designed to give kids something more positive to do than run amuck on Halloween.

Taking place the last week of October, Neewollah is the perfect place for some family fun this Halloween. So, what is there to do? Quite a bit, though you won’t find a ghost or ghoul in the place unless they’re of the friendly variety.

Instead, you’ll find family-friendly musicals, fun runs, the Queen Neelah Pageant, a carnival, local food vendors, parades, craft shows, live music, a marching band competition, and the annual Medallion Hunt, where the whole town comes out to search for the famous Medallion. Neewollah is much more of a state fair than many other Halloween festivals, but this fair takes on a fall theming, with some Halloween magic mixed in.

7. Take Part in Family-Friendly Frights in Anoka, Minnesota

For more fun for the whole family, Anoka is one of the best Halloween towns. In fact, since 1937, this charming destination has been called the Halloween Capital of the World. And this small town does indeed hold one massive Halloween celebration , lasting throughout the month of October.

If you want a fright, you can check out the Anoka Haunted House, which has been a staple of the festivities for 35 years. But many of the events here are perfect for those of us who would prefer a tamer Halloween experience.

Kids will love the Kids Fall Festival in early October, and later in the month, they can take part in the Children’s Costume Contest and Children’s Pumpkin Carving Contest. But there’s plenty more fun to be had for the whole family, including multiple parades, the Anoka Halloween Ambassador Coronation, the Pumpkin Weigh-Off, and the annual Pumpkin Bowl, which sees the Anoka Tornadoes take on the Centennial Cougars.

8. Party Hop the Night Away in Los Angeles, California

Best Towns for Halloween in the US: Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles is one of the best cities for Halloween if you want to party all night long. From nightclubs rocking out to Halloween hits to epic immersive experiences, there’s something for every type of partygoer.

The West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval is a party that you can’t miss. Though there are parties on Santa Monica Boulevard all year long, this Halloween event is truly wild in the best way! People come out decked in incredible costumes, so you may just end up spending the whole night people-watching.

Best Cities for Halloween in the US: Los Angeles, California

But you can also listen to live music and boogie down to DJs spinning the evening away. Or check out the bars along the street to indulge in some Halloween-themed drink specials.

Halloween isn’t the only holiday happening this time of year. Although Dίa del Los Muertos can sometimes get misconstrued as another version of Halloween, it is its own unique and very culturally significant celebration. Over at the famous Hollywood Forever Cemetery, you’ll find a huge event dedicated to Dίa del Los Muertos .

By day, you can take part in Dίa de Los Muertos, featuring a children’s plaza, stunning altars, art showcases, traditional dance performances, and unique cultural performances. But if you grab a ticket to Noche de los Muertos, you’ll see such incredible attractions and entertainment illuminated by candlelight and taking on a more adult-themed atmosphere.

9. Get Scared on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California

Best Halloween Towns to Visit: Queen Mary

Visiting the Queen Mary is not for those who frighten easily. Dating back to 1934, the Queen Mary was a luxury cruise liner that also ferried soldiers between the fronts in World War II. In 1967, it was retired and found a permanent home as a hotel in Long Beach.

It’s now known as one of the most haunted destinations in the US, with only the bravest being willing to stay in its famous Stateroom B340. If you want a ghostly encounter, you just might find it aboard this floating hotel.

Though Queen Mary’s beloved Dark Harbor, a truly incredible haunted house experience, has sadly not returned since the COVID-19 pandemic, you can still get scared at the Queen Mary during the Halloween season. The Queen Mary hosts its Haunted Encounters ghost tours, featuring many of the most infamously haunted locations in the hotel.

While we miss Dark Harbor, apparently Shaq (yes, that Shaq) heard the call of horror fans everywhere and brought a new horror festival to the Queen Mary, Shaqtoberfest . Not nearly as scary as its predecessor, Shaqtoberfest still offers tons of spooky fun, from haunted houses to pumpkin patches to a Halloween carnival.

10. Live Out Your ‘Twilight’ Dreams in Forks, Washington

Best Towns to Visit for Halloween: Forks, Washington

Team Edward? Or Team Jacob? No matter what side you choose, you’ll feel right at home in Forks, the town immortalized in Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” saga. So, if you prefer your vampires to be of the more sparkly variety, Forks is a great Halloween town to visit.

You can take your own “Twilight” tour, with stops at Bella Italia, where Edward and Bella had their first date; the Treaty Line, where no vampire or werewolf is allowed to cross into each other’s territory; and the Forks Community Hospital, where you’ll even see a spot reserved for Dr. Carlisle Cullen. And be sure to visit the Forever Twilight in Forks Collection at the Rainforest Arts Center, where you’ll see authentic “Twilight” props like screen-worn costumes.

Towns to Visit for Halloween Season: Forks, Washington

But if you want to get the full “Twilight” experience, you may want to actually go a bit earlier in the fall. Running every September near Bella’s birthday, September 13, the Forever Twilight in Forks Festival offers four days of fun, from panels with actors from the saga to costumed cosplayers acting out your favorite scenes to tons of themed parties and events.

11. Get Spooked in Savannah, Georgia

Best Towns for Halloween in the US: Savannah, Georgia

Think Salem is the most haunted town in the US? Or maybe New Orleans? You’re not wrong that there are tons of paranormal reports in these cities, but the title of the most haunted city in the US actually goes to Savannah. From the spooky yet gorgeous Bonaventure Cemetery to the Civil War-era Fort Pulaski, sightings of the unexplainable happen everywhere.

Though ghost tours are one of the coolest things to do in Savannah all year round, this spooky city really comes alive for the Halloween season. Deal with spirits of all kinds on the A Nightmare on Congress Street Bar Crawl , or get scared at the Savannah Moose Lodge’s Haunted Forest or the Alee Terror Plantation Haunted House .

Best Halloween Towns to Visit: Savannah, Georgia

But not everything is truly terrifying here. Savannah also hosts Wag-O-Ween , a pet-friendly event that raises money for local animal rescues and other critical animal-related causes. You’ll get treats for both you and your furry pal!

12. Take a Stephen King Tour in Bangor, Maine

Best Towns to Visit for Halloween: Bangor, Maine

What better way to celebrate Halloween in the US than by visiting one of the country’s best horror writers? Bangor has become a Halloween town thanks to being not only the home of Stephen King but also where he was greatly inspired to write some of his more famous stories. Bangor is the inspiration for Derry, the town in “It,” but there are many more places in the town that have jumped onto King’s pages.

Mount Hope Cemetery is the infamous burial ground in “Pet Sematary,” while the Paul Bunyan Statue features in both “It” and “Insomnia.” And from the water tower to the sewer drain, there are “It” locations all throughout the town. You can even see King’s own house on West Broadway.

You can tour Derry, we mean Bangor, on your own, or you can take a tour with SK Tours of Maine . This 2.5-hour tour is a narrated adventure through the town, where you’ll see not only what inspired King’s works but also historic landmarks from his own life, like where he worked and the charities he supported in town.

13. Attend the World’s Largest Halloween Parade in New York, New York

Best Halloween Towns to Visit: Village Halloween Parade

Like Los Angeles, there are Halloween parties galore in New York City . But there’s none more famous or massive than the Village Halloween Parade . This parade, which takes place in NYC’s Greenwich Village, holds the title of the world’s largest Halloween parade.

This iconic celebration was first held in 1973 and got its start thanks to Greenwich Village puppeteer and mask maker Ralph Lee. Puppets still have a special place in this parade. You can even volunteer to animate one for the festivities.

Best Cities for Halloween in the US: Village Halloween Parade

There are over 50,000 costumed participants, and you can be part of them. Happening on Halloween, this parade invites anyone to join in, provided you’re in costume or operating one of the parade’s puppets.

Join up with the crowd and dance the night away as you make your way north on Sixth Avenue. You just might win the annual costume contest, which takes place at the afterparty being held at Webster Hall.

14. Enjoy Scenic Hikes and Classic Horror in Telluride, Colorado

Over Labor Day weekend, Telluride is home to the Telluride Film Festival , where you can watch movie premieres and engage in talks with both famous and up-and-coming directors, writers, and actors. But come spooky season, another film festival takes over this scenic mountain town.

The Telluride Horror Show put Telluride on the map as one of the best Halloween cities in the US. As the first and largest horror film festival in Colorado, the Telluride Horror Show is the place to be for scary movie lovers.

Taking place over the course of three days in October, this festival offers something for every horror fan, from dark comedies to terrifying science fiction to classic horror. You’ll see movies you can’t see anywhere else, plus engage in talks with your favorite horror stars.

While Telluride’s ski season doesn’t typically start until late November, the film festival lines up perfectly with the best time to see the city’s fall foliage. Spend your evenings in the theaters and your mornings enjoying the beautiful golds, reds, and yellows to be found throughout the San Juan Mountains.

15. Pop into the New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival in Laconia, New Hampshire.

Spooky Halloween Towns to Visit: Pumpkin Festival

The picturesque town of Laconia may not be what you first think of when you imagine a Halloween city in the US. It’s not bursting with events or haunted houses, and if Laconia is haunted, it’s not really known for it. But if you’re looking for family-friendly fun, Laconia is a great place to spend Halloween.

The New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival , typically held over the course of one weekend in October, has a strange history. Since 1991, it has been held in Keene, where the town managed to hold on to the title of the largest number of jack-o’-lanterns in one place for many years. But in 2014, riots by Keene State College students resulted in the event being unable to continue in Keene. Since 2015, it’s been held in Laconia instead.

Though the organizers of Keene’s pumpkin festival now hold a much smaller festival called the Keene Pumpkin Festival , Laconia is where you’ll find a festival that’s much more similar to the original one in Keene. In addition to thousands of pumpkins on display, you’ll also discover handmade goods from more than 100 local artisans, kids’ attractions and entertainment, contests, parades, live music, light shows, and other special events.

There you have it! The 15 best places to celebrate Halloween in the US. What are your favorite Halloween cities? Let us know in the comments!

Best Halloween Towns: New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is the home of Mardi Gras and voodoo. No way was it not going to make this list. Halloween is the second most celebrated holiday here. [I bet you can guess the first.]

Best Halloween Towns - New Orleans

There are so many haunted tours to take through New Orleans I could not just pick one to showcase here. Every corner will have a haunted house or haunted street and you will be easily able to find one to fit your style!

New Orleans has a reputation for voodoo. You can visit the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum and learn all about the history of Louisiana voodoo. Another very popular voodoo attraction is Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo . New Orleans offers several voodoo tours, Congo Square and Bayou St. John are also worth a visit.

Best Halloween Towns: Anoka, Minnesota

Anoka, MN gives off small-town vibes and is one of the best towns to visit for Halloween. But it is the self-proclaimed “Halloween Capital” of the United States. Credited for hosting the first-ever Halloween event in history, year after year this town does not disappoint.

Instead of tossing their pumpkins into the garbage, the town brings all of their pumpkins to the pumpkin smash. They then throw the pumpkins into a huge compost bin where they are used for new soil and other great things for the town to use!

If you’re into Halloween but also very competitive, make the trip to Anoka. Every year they host a Gray Ghost 5k. The best part of this race is that most participants dress in costumes for the run!

Anoka hosts mostly family-friendly events which are perfect for people traveling with children. These events include coloring contests, A Halloween Ambassador contest, a preschool costume contest, and even a bingo night!

Best Halloween Towns: New York City, New York

NYC does not disappoint on the party front, whether it is Halloween or any other time of the year. But during Halloween, New York City really comes to life! In the fall and near Halloween, you will find countless Halloween parties and haunted attractions.

This parade is not your average parade. Started in 1973 by a mask maker named Ralph Lee. The Greenwich Village Halloween Parade has become the largest Halloween celebration and parade in the United States. It starts at dusk and continues throughout the night. You will be competing with an average of over 2 million people for the best costume!

Best Halloween Towns: Independence, Kansas

Another one of the great small towns in the United States, Halloween, is done right in Independence, Kansas! They don’t let the fun stop in just one night. They celebrate for 9 days!

One of the best small-town Halloween festivals is held annually in Independence, KS. The Neewollah Festival is the largest annual Halloween event in the entire state. If you didn’t notice, Neewollah is Halloween spelled backward. Over 75,000 people attend the festival annually. It is full of fun events for families and individuals. Dozens of activities are available from different parades, carnivals, food festivals, haunted houses and so much more!

Best Halloween Towns: Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is known as one of the most haunted cities in the United States. It is very similar to Salem. Savannah has been around for a long time and is also one of the oldest cities in Georgia.

best states to visit during halloween

The Bonaventure Cemetery Tours in Savannah, GA bring the city’s history and scariness together. These cemetery tours run year-round but visiting a graveyard closer to Halloween is way more fun.

If you are 21 or over you are in for a very fun night! You’ll visit local bars and other creepy and haunted Savannah sites. The Creepy Crawl is a fun and boozy activity, and everyone gets a souvenir to-go cup koozie!

Best Halloween Towns: St. Helens’ Oregon

Heading back to Halloween movie territory, St Helens’ Oregon is the home of the Disney movie Halloweentown . Being one of the many famous cities for Halloween, they filmed many of the scenes right in St. Helens and they keep the Halloween spirit alive even years after all these years!

This is an annual event where the town gets together and lights the giant pumpkin in front of the town hall. [Like the pumpkin in front of the town hall in Halloweentown .]

This event lasts a little over a month and is full of festival activities. The Spirit of Halloweentown festival includes a scavenger hunt through the woods, tarot card readings, haunted houses, and a dance!

The last midwestern Halloween town on our list, and it does not disappoint. Some cities, towns, and neighborhoods have over-the-top Christmas displays every year, but not Romeo. This is one town that goes all out for Halloween.

Terror on Tillson Street- During the month of October, many [if not all] homeowners created some creepy and spooky [and seriously detailed] displays on their front lawn. Since the neighbors started this tradition, the town has been a Terror on Tillson Street ever since. You won’t have to pay admission to a haunted house when you can walk around the neighborhood and enjoy all the spookiness for free.

With so many famous cities for Halloween and small towns, which outdo their size during this spooky season. It may be hard to choose where to travel. But, wherever you decide, bring your best costume, and love for Halloween because you’re gonna need it

Top 10 Spookiest American Towns to Visit for Halloween

Top 10 Spookiest American Towns to Visit for Halloween

Photo: Shutterstock.com

With summer in the rear view mirror, and Halloween just around the corner, travelers are looking for their horror holiday fix. To that end, here’s a round-up of some of the spookiest places in America to celebrate Halloween, all month long.

1. Sleepy Hollow, New York

Located just 30 miles north of Manhattan, Sleepy Hollow was the site featured in Washington Irving’s short story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” This quaint little town serves as a popular Halloween city that still boasts its iconic unofficial mascot, the Headless Horseman.

Visitors who wish to embrace the holiday spirit can do so by visiting the 300-year-old Van Cortlandt Manor, which gets a makeover for the Great Jack-o-Lantern Blaze every year. There are also dramatic performances of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” cemetery tour guides, haunted hayrides, and spooky street fairs.

2. Salem, Massachusetts

Possibly the most famous Halloween town in the U.S., Salem is most notable for its infamous witch trials that date back to 1692. And for those hoping to check out all of the haunted happenings in Salem, October is the best time of year to explore.

Visitors can sign up for a walking tour of the city, or immerse themselves in the Halloween spirit by attending the Festival of the Dead to experience psychic readings, talks with the dead, and paranormal experts. They will also find plenty of haunted houses, costume parties, fireworks, and parades in Salem to keep busy throughout the month.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is known for being one of the most historic and reportedly haunted cities in America. And when it comes Halloween, the Big Easy embraces its reputation the only way it knows how, with costumes, music, and roaring nightlife.

There are plenty of seasonal festivities in New Orleans designed for kids and adults, including the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience, New Orleans Vampire Ball, Boo at the Zoo, Crawloween at the Audubon Nature Center, and the Ghost City Tours Haunted Pub Crawl.

4. Dallas, Texas (Screams Halloween Theme Park)

Dallas is not traditionally synonymous with Halloween. Nevertheless, it is the site of the Screams Halloween Theme Park, the largest Halloween Park in the U.S. From late September through October, Screams is open on Friday and Saturday evenings for visitors of all ages. The park boasts five haunted houses, live entertainment, and other freaky attractions, for anyone hoping to experience thrills-and-chills in the spirit of the season.

5. Orlando, Florida

Speaking of theme parks, Orlando is the site of some of the most well-known attractions in the country — and they know how to celebrate Halloween right. With events ranging from family-friendly to downright terrifying, Halloween-lovers will have a variety of options to look forward to.

Between SeaWorld Orlando, Legoland Florida, and Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, parents and children can enjoy family-friendly Halloween parties throughout October, where kids can collect all sorts of treats to enjoy. Universal Orlando Resort offers a more thrilling diversion for adults, with Halloween Horror Nights , billed as the world’s premier Halloween event.

6. Independence, Kansas

In Independence, Halloween doesn’t last for just one night. Instead, the town hosts a nine-day event known as the Neewollah Festival (that’s Halloween spelled backward). Neewollah is the largest annual event in the state, drawing up to 75,000 visitors. The family-friendly party includes dozens of activities, like parades, food festivals, carnivals, and more.

Independence is also the site of other seasonal favorites, like the DooDah Parade, which serves as a chance for grownups to strut their Halloween stuff. This parade is sprinkled with the odd drill team, bearded beauties, and unusual creatures. This Mardi Gras-type parade lets the young at heart celebrate the season in their own way.

While in Independence, visitors shouldn’t miss the Shattered Souls Haunted House & Shatter Vision 3D, the largest haunted house in southeast Kansas.

7. New York, New York

New York City’s Village Halloween Parade literally shuts down lower Manhattan and draws visitors from all over the world.

First established in 1974, this parade features dancers, elaborate costumes, and giant puppets. Anyone in a costume is welcome to participate in this event, and those wanting to watch should show up early to grab a spot along 6 th  Avenue. If this incredible parade doesn’t satisfy your Halloween hunger, head to an after-dark Crypt Crawl under the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The city will be overflowing with haunted hotels, bars and buildings, and even the museums and zoos go all out for this annual celebration.

8. Long Beach, California

For those on the West Coast who want a good scare, there is no better place to visit than one of the most haunted places in the world, the cruise liner Queen Mary. Docked off Long Beach, this is the site of one of the coolest and most unique places to celebrate Halloween.

Dark Harbor runs for the entire month of October, offering terrifying experiences for those who dare to visit. This month-long event features six haunted mazes, rides, live shows, food and beverages. Fair warning though, this is not a family-friendly event, and visitors might want to leave the kids at home for this one.

9. Estes Park, Colorado

Estes Park is a quiet mountainside village, known for being home to the historic Stanley Hotel, the famous and reportedly haunted location that Stephen King used as inspiration for his novel, “The Shining.” Throughout October, visitors will find plenty of Halloween-centric events that cater to visitors of all ages.

Check out the Shining Ball to see theater characters, a costume contest, and late-night dancing, as well as a murder mystery dinner. On Halloween night, enjoy a visit to Main Street for trick-or-treating fun. Also consider attending the family-friendly Autumn Gold Festival for live bands, bratwursts and beer; or head to the Pumpkins & Pilsner Festival to enjoy face painting, bounce houses, and pony rides, along with seasonal local craft beers.

10. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Eastern State Penitentiary)

Home of America’s largest haunted house and the site named No. 1 by Forbes magazine, the Eastern State Penitentiary is located in Philadelphia. Formerly one of the most famous and expensive prisons in the world, the facility stands today in near-ruins, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and huge castle-like walls.

Now a National Historic landmark, the prison is home of “Terror Behind the Walls,” an interactive horror experience where participants enter a haunted house, set behind the walls of Penitentiary. The prison boasts six attractions: Quarantine 4D, Machine Shop, Break Out, Detritus, Infirmary, and Lock Down. A ghost bus transports visitors around, and there are 200 performers plying their scary craft. “Terror Behind the Walls” is consistently ranked among the top haunted attractions in the nation, providing up-close-and-personal encounters from the moment visitors step through the front gate until they finally make their way through all six attractions.

13 Best Places to Visit for Halloween Around the World

From Mexico to Romania, here are 13 of the best places to visit for Halloween.

best states to visit during halloween

The spooky season is almost here, and there's no better way to honor it than with a trip to a place primed and ready to celebrate ghosts and goblins.

Now's the time to lean into sweater season, the changing leaves, and all things pumpkin — both flavored and decor related. And don't worry — just because it's Halloween doesn't mean you always need to be in for a fright. Here are 13 spooky and fun places to visit for Halloween around the globe.

Salem, Massachusetts

It's almost impossible to separate Salem from Halloween. The coastal Massachusetts community was the site of the Salem Witch Trials, beginning in 1692, which led to the hanging of 19 men and women. It's a place where the air is thick with spirits, but around Halloween, it's a destination filled with merriment too. Each October, the town puts on Salem Haunted Happenings, which includes a parade, film nights, a costume ball, and more, and you're all invited to join .

London, England

London has all the historical trappings needed for an epic Halloween season. It's a place brimming with ghost stories, and the best spot to experience this to the fullest is the Tower of London . It was here that several notable figures were put to death, including Anne Boleyn, the former Queen of England and second wife of Henry VIII, who is said to still roam the halls. Visitors can tour the Tower of London any time of year, but it's just got that extra spooky feeling in October. Visit for a Twilight Tour for an eerie vibe.

Boyne Valley, Ireland

What better place to celebrate Halloween than in the place where it began? As History.com explains, the Halloween tradition began with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain . At the time of its origin, people would wear costumes to ward off ghosts, which means not much has changed (though we're sure they didn't have allegiances to different candy at the time). Now Ireland celebrates with festivals throughout the month of October, including the Púca Halloween Festival , which honors the Celtic new year with music, art, and plenty of sweet treats.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivities are serious business in Oaxaca. Though it's a festival for the dead, it's by no means a horror show. As Travel + Leisure previously explained, the event is in honor of those who've passed from this world to the next and is a way to keep their spirit alive today. The celebration takes place over two days, with families decorating the graves of their deceased loved ones and crafting ornate altars at home to further honor them. Travelers can join the revelry in the form of parades and parties throughout the town of San Miguel de Allende, which keeps the festivities going through November 2.

Transylvania, Romania

As the home of Count Dracula, Transylvania has a lot to live up to during the Halloween season, but it more than delivers on its spooky offerings. Travelers to Transylvania can visit Bran Castle , the home of the mythical count, which is open every day for tours. The castle even hosts a yearly Halloween bash that includes a nighttime tour, a party, and an open bar.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is a town known for its revelry. Yes, its Mardi Gras celebrations are second to none, but its Halloween parties aren't too shabby either. In October, the city busts out its decorations and its best costumes for parades and parties galore. Don't miss the ghost tours in the French Quarter if you're looking to send a few shivers down your spine before joining the festivities.

Paris, France

Looking for a Halloween event that's très chic? Head to Paris. The City of Lights may not be the place where you'll find the typical trick-or-treat crowd, but what you will find is La Toussaint , or All Saints' Day, a day to remember friends and family who have passed, which is both a national and Catholic holiday. Like Day of the Dead in Mexico, families take this day to honor their loved ones by visiting their graves and placing flowers on top. There are more light-hearted events throughout the city, including parties at Disneyland Paris and Le Manoir de Paris, arguably the biggest and coolest haunted house in Europe.

Scotland, like Ireland, has strong ties to Halloween's past. As Visit Scotland explained, the name Halloween comes from the Scottish shortening of "All Hallows' Eve." While you can certainly attend any number of events to honor the day, for a longer journey, try exploring the nation's Ghost Trail, a map of 15 locations around the nation that are said to be some of the most haunted spots on the planet. End the tour at the Samhuinn Fire Festival in Edinburgh for a delightful conclusion.

Venice and Borgo a Mozzano, Italy

Italy isn't exactly a Halloween-crazed nation, but one place you'll find plenty of ghoulish fun is in Venice. It too is a destination well-known among the ghost hunting circuit, especially on the island Poveglia. The island once acted as a quarantine zone for people suffering from the plague and was even used as an insane asylum in the early 20th century, making it an absolute hub for paranormal activity. As for the parties, you'll have to head to the town of Borgo a Mozzano, which sits just north of Lucca. There, you'll find a massive annual Halloween bash on the appropriately named Devil's Bridge .

Hong Kong loves a good party, and Halloween is no exception. Like other destinations on this list, it's not really a place where you'll find trick-or-treaters on the street, but you will find festive events nonetheless, especially in places like Hong Kong Disneyland , which goes toe-to-toe with its global counterparts for the season. Hong Kong's other theme park, Ocean Park , also throws an annual bash that's not to be missed, and you'll typically find a plethora of happenings in Lan Kwai Fong, the city's famed party district, that are all worthy of a visit (though things have been uncharacteristically quiet here due to the pandemic, it appears that may be changing .)

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah, Georgia is the place to go in the U.S. if you want to be almost guaranteed a ghost sighting. The southern city is brimming with ghost stories thanks to haunted hotels, buildings, bars, and more, which can all be experienced through its plentiful ghost tours. Because of its connection to the spirits, Savannah is a stellar place to go for epic trick-or-treating for kids and parties for adults. See all of the city's event listings here to stay up-to-date on yearly happenings.

Prague, Czech Republic

Halloween is quickly becoming a more popular holiday in Prague thanks to the growing expat community. Though you'll only find a very sparse trick-or-treating scene, it's a place filled with gothic architecture that feels both utterly romantic and absolutely spooky all at once. The city is even home to a torture museum , which is absolutely more terrfying to visit than any fake haunted house in your home town.

Brussels, Belgium

Brussels may not have a long history with Halloween, but it sure has dedicated itself to becoming a Halloween hotspot in recent years. The city hosts parades in Saint-Gilles , and several bars and restaurants host their own gatherings. None, however, are as spooky as Le Cercueil , which translates to "coffins" in French. The bar is spooky all year long and those visiting can toast over a table made from a coffin, one of which comes with clear plexiglass so you can see the skeleton inside.

Where does Halloween come from?

Halloween originates from the ancient Celtic celebration, Samhain, and was celebrated in Britain and Ireland. The festival celebrates the end of the harvest and the coming of shorter days. It is one of four Gaelic season festivals. The Celts would gather around ancient passage tombs, which were considered by some to be portals to the Otherworld. During this time, it was thought that the barrier between worlds was thinned, and spirits were able to cross between realms.

The festivals included bonfires, dancing, costumes, sacrifices, and feasting. Most of our Halloween customs have evolved out of these ritual festivities. Costume parties and trick-or-treating antics were primary a British and American thing for a long time, but now the festivities have spread to countries all around the world.

The little city comes alive with fireworks, parades, costume contests, and execution reenactments.

2. Transylvania, Romania

Transylvania is a mystical land of fairytale castles set in the misty mountains. It is the home of Vlad the Impaler, the Wallachian ruler on which Dracula was partially based. Bran Castle is known as Dracula’s Castle. It was not and has nothing to do with him, but the castle does have a pretty amazing setting that lends itself to creepiness. The castle is vampire-mania year-round, but it certainly elevates during the Halloween season. The castle offers guided Halloween tours, laced with Transylvanian lure. You can visit the childhood home of Vlad the Impaler, complete with a torture museum, in nearby Sighisoara.

While in the area, you should also visit Cluj-Napoca. Not only is it another hauntingly beautiful Transylvanian mountain town, but it is also home to the Hoai-Baciu Forest, one of the spookiest places on the planet. The forest is a mass of twisted, gnarly trees, that are always shrouded in mist. The forest is known as the “Bermuda Triangle of Romania,” as there are countless local tales of persons disappearing into the forest under mysterious circumstances, as well as a large number of UFO sightings. One look at this forest, and you will understand why it is so steeped in legend. It is seriously a creepy place.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is primarily known for Mardi Gras, but it is also the most haunted city in the United States. With the heavy influx of early Black African religions from the Caribbean, New Orleans has always been one of the hubs for voodoo practitioners in the United States. The streets of the French Quarter are lined with voodoo shops to peruse if you are so inclined.

Visit the LaLaurie Mansion, home of the infamously cruel serial killer Madame Delphine LaLaurie. Dawn your best costume and join the Halloween street party on Frenchman Street. Tour some of the scariest haunted houses in the world. Watch the Krewe of Boo Parade, take a guided tour of The Gardette-LaPrete Mansion, home to the largest mass slaying in New Orleans history, tour the hauntingly beautiful, world-famous cemeteries, and of course learn all about this city of ghosts and goblins on our app-lead New Orleans ghost tour!

4. London, England

The dark, gloomy cobblestone streets of London provide the perfect ambiance for ghost stories and haunted tours. Jack the Ripper found the streets of White Hall an ideal hunting ground to complete his dirty deeds, and the Tower of London was known for its brutal torture tactics and numerous executions. The city celebrates Halloween big, and there is an abundance of ghost tours and Halloween events in the city.

Visit the London Dungeon, which recreates a series of the city’s most macabre stories, including that of Jack the Ripper and Sweeney Todd. Take a tour of the Tower of London. Book a nighttime Jack the Ripper walking tour to revisit the infamous murder sites. Visit the site of William Wallace’s execution, or take the train out to Hampton Court Palace, which is reportedly haunted by two of Henry VIII’s wives. Descend below the bridge for the haunted London Bridge Experience and London Tombs, where you will find your way through an underground maze filled with famous, nefarious characters. Top off your week with a showing of the gothic romance, Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre. There is so much to do in London for Halloween that your only issue will be narrowing down the options.

5. Edinburgh, Scotland

Another city steeped in fog and shadowed by rain clouds, is the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. Edinburgh is the city where the Harry Potter series was written, and many of the key locations in the stories are based on Edinburgh icons. Harry Potter walking tours are popular here, as well as too many walking ghost tours to count.

Take a guided tour of Real Mary King’s Close and the seedy underworld vaults of Edinburgh. If you prefer your antics a bit more lighthearted, then hop on the Comedy Horror Ghost Bus Tour. The Edinburgh Dungeon is very similar to London’s with scary rides and local ghost stories.

The Samhuinn Fire Parade is a special event thrown in Old Town, on Halloween night. It consists of a dramatic battle between the Kings of Summer and Winter. The winner is decided by Cailleach, a Celtic goddess. The festival is meant to usher in winter and includes wild performances, music, dance, and lots of fabulous costumes.

6. Oaxaca, Mexico

Oaxaca is a stunning city in Southwest Mexico, and it’s famous for stunning cathedrals and fabulous cuisine. The day after traditional Halloween, the city is transformed for Day of the Dead celebrations. Dia de Los Muertos is a time to celebrate and honor dead loved ones. Personal shrines are set up in homes and businesses, with elaborate displays of flowers and candles. The celebrations overflow into the streets with lavish parades, full of fanciful dancers with intricately painted faces. The party concludes in the main square and continues all night long!

7. Chicago, Illinois

Chicago has a long history of violence from the hay day of the mob to modern-day gang rivalries. Old school gangsters filled the waterways with the bodies of their victims, and paranormal believers tell stories of screams echoing out from the Clark Street Bridge. Clark street is where the infamous Valentine’s Day Massacre took place, and it is said to be the home of several apparitions. You can hang out on Archer Avenue and offer a ride to the “vanishing hitchhiker.” John Dillinger’s ghost haunts the alley next to his death site at Victory Gardens Biograph Theater. Even Lincoln Park used to be a cemetery and is reported to have frequent paranormal activity.

For a thoroughly spooky tour of the “Windy City,” check out our Chicago ghost hunt! You’ll explore the paranormal culture and history of Iroquois Theater, Hancock Center, and much more on this ghoulish journey through one of America’s most haunted cities.

8. Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Eureka Springs is a small town in the Ozark Mountains that happens to be home to “America’s most haunted hotel,” the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa . In its long history, the gorgeous, old, mountaintop hotel has served as both a girls’ college and a hospital… both fodder for paranormal activity! The hotel staff does a daily ghost tour, and they even host an annual paranormal event for researchers from all over the world called the Eureka Springs Paranormal Weekend. Most of the ghosts are friendly and tend to stay in their room or area. The hotel is still a working getaway for romantic weekends, but don’t be surprised if your lover’s weekend turns out to be a threesome.

Eureka Springs is a fun town with lots of quirky shops selling folk art and tasty treats. The food is fantastic. The traditional architecture is quite charming, and you can visit the huge Christ of the Ozarks statue and the gorgeous Thorncrown Chapel, a fairytale glass chapel in the woods. Catch a magic show, or join one of the guided walking ghost tours or underground city tours!

9. Savannah, Georgia

The beautiful Antebellum mansions and dripping Spanish moss are generally seen as charming, but on a foggy autumn evening, they can certainly lean towards spooky! The Old Southern City has a rich (if deplorable, in parts) history, and ghost stories abound about former slaves and Confederate soldiers.

Book a room in one of the haunted hotels, and learn the legends of the area on Let’s Roam’s Savannah ghost tour , where you’ll visit Madison Square, The Pirate’s House, and The Marshal House. Finish off your evening in costume and experience excellent Halloween drink deals on a Congress Street bar crawl.

10. San Francisco, California

Not only is San Francisco an old gold rush town, most of which are creepy, but it is home to one of the eeriest places in America, Alcatraz Prison. A tour of “The Rock” is spooky any time, but a haunted night tour, in the foggy bay, adds a whole nother level of chill. The city, along with its neighbor Los Angeles, is one of the most popular places featured in scary movies.

The 1889 Queen Anne Hotel is gorgeous but notoriously haunted. Mary, apparently a former maid, is often seen going about her duties, but hey, she has a habit of unpacking guests’ bags for them, which is nice. In a city with so many haunted jaunts, it’s hard to know where to. We got you covered! Just download our scavenger hunt app, and explore the best of “The Gold City’s” paranormal past on our “San Francisco Ghost Rush” scavenger hunt !

11. Prague, Czech Republic

Bell-ringing nuns, arguing priests and prostitutes, and a monk’s mistress roam Old Town in Prague, and they aren’t the only ones. Prague has at least 100 known specters and is considered one of the most haunted cities in the world.

Ghost aside, Prague has a plethora of creepy spots. You can take a Medieval dungeon tour, explore the infamously haunted Prague Castle where multiple specters reside, cross over Charles Bridge and look for the 12 headless men, and visit the incredibly creepy Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital and cemetery. In fact, Prague has several spooky old cemeteries.

Top it all off with a stop by Sedlec Ossuary. It’s a Roman Catholic chapel that was built over an ancient cemetery. The bodies were moved into the church and assembled into coats of armor, wall decorations, and a horrific, huge chandelier. The church is thought to house skeletons of between 40 and 70,000 people. Talk about spine-chilling!

12. Sleepy Hollow, New York

It just sounds creepy, doesn’t it? Sleepy Hollow is, of course, the stomping ground of Washington Irving’s Headless Horseman, Ichabod Crane. Rumors abound that locals still see the horseman in The Old Dutch Burying Ground, where Irving himself is buried.

Join a lantern-guided tour of the cemetery. They are offered day and night. The town embraces its heritage on All Hallows Eve. There are hayrides, a street fair, and haunted tours of the town’s Gothic mansions. One such mansion, the Philipsburg Manor, is completely transformed during the month of October to be the realm of the Headless Horseman. The 300-year-old home is filled to the brim with Ichabod’s court of witches, vampires, and soldier zombies.

As you might imagine, Sleepy Hollow gets pretty busy during the holiday, so you might want to book your tours pretty far in advance!

15. Dublin, Ireland

Ireland is famous for its St. Paddy’s day events and some of the world’s friendliest people, but it’s also steeped in Celtic history, which means its Halloween roots go deep. Some say the Samhain ceremonies started in Ireland, though there are debates. The Irish know how to throw a party, and Halloween is no exception! I've visited all 50 states solo. These are the 8 places I'd pick for a relaxing, low-key vacation.

  • After traveling solo to all 50 US states, I've found some great places to relax and unwind.
  • I love visiting coastal towns in California, Oregon, and Maine.
  • I also enjoy disconnecting in Taos, New Mexico, and Homer, Alaska.

Insider Today

Over the past decade, I've traveled to all 50 US states and spent time in tons of major cities and small towns. I've also driven solo across the country several times, stopping in some of the most unique and beautiful places the United States has to offer.

Although I love finding a heart-pumping adventure or bustling city to explore, there's nothing quite like a getaway meant for relaxation. Turns out I'm not alone in this thought, as more and more travelers gravitate toward relaxing getaways .

Although relaxation can sometimes be more of a state of mind than a physical place, some destinations I've visited have made it easier to embrace a low-key and laid-back attitude than others.

Here are eight places I'd recommend for a relaxing getaway.

California's Sonoma Coast is more tranquil than the state's touristy areas.

best states to visit during halloween

California's Sonoma Coast is home to some of the state's most dramatic scenery. With towering cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, rolling hills covered in vineyards, and ancient redwood forests, this is where I love to visit to simply immerse myself in nature.

Unlike the more touristy areas in Southern California , the beaches here are generally less crowded and more peaceful. I love to drive the coast to lunch in Bodega Bay, relax on the sand at Goat Rock Beach while listening to the sound of the waves, and enjoy the fresh ocean air.

Taos, New Mexico, is the perfect spot to unwind.

best states to visit during halloween

Taos, a small historic town in northern New Mexico, is the spot I always return to for a relaxing and low-key getaway.

Nestled amid the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos has some of the most breathtaking landscapes I've ever encountered and is the perfect spot to watch a sunrise or sunset.

I love spending a few nights in a short-term rental or a vintage camper reading, relaxing, and visiting nearby hot springs and art galleries.

It's easy to disconnect in Homer, Alaska.

best states to visit during halloween

Nestled on the tip of the Kenai Peninsula , Homer, Alaska, feels very peaceful and low-key.

The majestic mountains, glaciers peeking out in the distance, and stunning coastline dotted with islands make Homer visually stunning, with a charming downtown and opportunities to explore.

There are many outdoor-adventure opportunities here, but visitors can just as easily have a slower-paced vacation and truly disconnect.

Spend time exploring the coastline, take a scenic boat tour, and savor the local seafood — all with a tranquil view.

Pacific City, Oregon, offers a laid-back vibe with local shops, art galleries, and cafés.

best states to visit during halloween

The Oregon Coast, as a whole, is the perfect destination for a relaxing, low-key getaway, but one of my favorite spots is Pacific City.

This quaint spot with a laid-back vibe has lots of local shops, art galleries, friendly cafés, and local restaurants to keep me busy between trips to the magnificent coastline.

Home to Haystack Rock and the stunning Cape Kiwanda scenic headland, you don't have to go far to find the natural beauty. Many hotels and rentals in the area even offer ocean views.

Lake Toxaway is North Carolina's private hidden gem.

best states to visit during halloween

Located in North Carolina, Lake Toxaway is one of the most beautiful places you likely haven't heard of.

The stunning lake, surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills, is a true respite. With access granted only to homeowners, short-term renters, and guests at The Greystone Inn, the lake offers exceptional opportunities for rest.

Although there are opportunities for hiking, biking, and water sports, the beauty of Lake Toxaway is that you can do as much or as little as you please.

Avila Beach, California, is the perfect escape from California's big cities.

best states to visit during halloween

Avila Beach is my favorite spot in Central California. Located between Los Angeles and San Francisco, this community is the picture of relaxation.

The quaint enclave is an escape from California's big cities and offers a relaxed vibe and friendly atmosphere. Explore local shops and galleries, grab a cup of coffee and a pastry at a waterfront café, or indulge in fresh seafood at a harborside restaurant — all at a leisurely pace.

Avila Beach also has hot springs and wineries nearby, which make the perfect additions to any low-key getaway.

Carefree, Arizona, offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

best states to visit during halloween

With a name like Carefree, it's no surprise you'll find low-key tranquility in this Arizona town. Offering a unique combination of desert beauty, wellness opportunities, and proximity to the Phoenix metro area, it is the perfect place to unwind.

Carefree sits at the edge of the Sonoran Desert, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, and has become a hub for wellness seekers.

Several well-known wellness resorts and spas are located either in town or nearby, offering amenities and opportunities for rest and relaxation.

Take a scenic hike through McDowell Sonoran Preserve, or simply relax by the pool at your resort, soaking up the Arizona sunshine.

Coastal Maine offers a breathtaking and relaxing escape.

best states to visit during halloween

No list of relaxing getaways would be complete without Coastal Maine. The rugged coastline of Maine, with its rocky cliffs, sandy beaches, and quaint harbor villages, offers a genuinely breathtaking and relaxing escape.

With many hidden coves and less-frequented stretches of sand, it's easy to find your own peaceful spot to soak up the sun, listen to the rhythm of the waves, and truly unwind.

Before a leisurely stroll along the coast, spend your days visiting the picturesque towns dotting the coastline and savoring fresh seafood and lobster rolls.

The 18 best places to see the northern lights.

Check the aurora borealis off your bucket list.

The Best Places for the Northern Lights

Northern lights over Kirkjufell in Iceland.

Getty Images

The northern lights, known as the aurora borealis, are a spectacular natural light show visible at certain times of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. They occur when electrically charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, creating vibrant streaks of blue, green, pink and violet dancing across the night sky. 2024 and 2025 are an excellent time to catch the northern lights: Solar activity will be at a peak, making for a more impressive experience, if you're in the right place.

The best places to see the aurora borealis have little light pollution, clear skies and no precipitation. The lights are only visible at northern latitudes when it's dark outside, so the months from September to April are best for seeing the aurora. There's also a Southern Hemisphere counterpart, the aurora australis; there are fewer easy spots from which to view this phenomenon, but if you're lucky, it can be equally brilliant.

For more information on the northern lights, scroll down to the FAQ section at the bottom of this page. Read on to discover the top destinations where you can see the kaleidoscopic northern and southern lights.

Fairbanks, Alaska

Aurora borealis over tree line in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Fairbanks is by far one of the best places in the world to view the northern lights, as it's located directly under the auroral oval. This ring-shaped zone sits around the Earth's geomagnetic North Pole and is generally associated with the most vibrant aurora sightings. Visitors can expect to see the lights on an average of four out of five clear nights during aurora season, which lasts from late August to late April.

You can book a northern lights tour to see the aurora from the springs and tubs at Chena Hot Springs Resort. This excursion includes round-trip transportation to the resort from town, a soak in the hot springs, a visit to the Fairbanks Aurora Ice Museum and an aurora viewing tour; dinner and drinks centered around Alaska produce are an option extra with hot drinks supplied.

There's more to Fairbanks than just the northern lights: If you visit in late summer, consider family-friendly activities like a ride on the Riverboat Discovery or gold panning. For a festive holiday experience in the winter, head around 15 miles out of Fairbanks to visit the Santa Claus House in the city of North Pole. Travelers can also see ice sculptures in February and March at the impressive World Ice Art Championships or take a dog-sledding or snowmobiling tour .

Where to stay: For excellent chances of aurora viewing, book a private igloo at Borealis Basecamp, a top glamping resort located on 100 remote acres of boreal forest about 25 miles from Fairbanks. With activities like dog-sledding on top of aurora viewing, past visitors regularly describe it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tromsø, Norway

Norther lights over landscape of Tromsø, Norway.

Located about 220 miles above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is one of several top spots to view the northern lights in Norway. At the darkest point of the aurora season – which runs from September to early April – the sun doesn't rise in this northern part of the country, although there is twilight during the day. With this level of darkness, there are more opportunities to see the aurora.

Tromsø itself is a small but lively city, so there's plenty to see and do when you're not looking up at the sky, including a visit to the beautiful Arctic Cathedral. In late January to early February, the city hosts the Northern Lights Festival, a 10-day music and performing arts event featuring a variety of musical genres.

Aurora chasers can view the lights on their own while in town, but to get a better view, it's recommended to head away from the city lights. Arctic Circle Tours is one company offering guided trips, with small groups for a more personal vibe. Alternatively, adventure-seekers can embark on an exhilarating husky trekking expedition in the Arctic wilderness.

Where to stay: For accommodations with harbor views, look no further than the Scandic Ishavshotel – guests love it for its convenient central location in the city, as well as its plus-sized breakfast buffet with plenty of choices.

Luosto and Rovaniemi (Lapland), Finland

Northern lights over Pyhae Luosto National Park in northern Finland.

Lapland is located within the Arctic Circle in the northernmost part of Finland. The northern lights are most visible here between the end of August and April – and approximately 200 times a year – so there are many opportunities for aurora spotting. Finnish Lapland is also known as home to the Sámi people (the only recognized Indigenous group in the European Union region), some 200,000 reindeer and Santa Claus – who can be visited in the town of Rovaniemi, the region's largest city and a great base for your aurora expedition.

Consider venturing roughly 70 miles north of Rovaniemi to the resort town of Luosto, set among the picturesque and hilly landscape of Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Here, you can also spend a magical evening outdoors under star-filled skies during a reindeer-drawn sleigh ride through the snow-covered forests. Jaakkola Reindeer Farm offers a reindeer sleigh tour to spot the aurora once weekly; it includes a stop to warm up at a bonfire camp with snacks, hot beverages and local fireside stories.

Where to stay: For a bucket list experience, watch the impressive light show from a glass igloo at Santa's Hotel Aurora & Igloos in Luosto. Past visitors love the cozy atmosphere here, boosted by amenities like saunas and log fireplaces. If you're sticking to Rovaniemi, the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel is a stunning choice, with designer cabins perched among the snow-covered taiga forest.

Orkney, Scotland

Northern lights over a lake in the Scottish Highlands.

This group of captivating (and mostly uninhabited) islands, located about 10 miles off Scotland's remote northern coast, is one of the best places to see the northern nights in the U.K. Fall and winter are the best seasons to witness the aurora, also known in local Shetland dialect as the "Mirrie Dancers," with fall bringing the highest proportion of clear nights. A few places to see the spectacular light show include along the coast at Birsay or the Broch of Gurness, an archaeological ruin on a sweeping and dramatic coastline.

In addition to the aurora, Orkney is home to breathtaking coastal landscapes and more sheep than you can count (try some local lamb, if you can). Travelers can also visit the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with several monuments dating back 5,000 years.

Where to stay: During your visit, plan to stay in the historic town of Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkney Islands: The no-fuss Ayre Hotel offers harbor views, and past visitors compliment the hearty meals in the hotel restaurant. Spot the aurora close to town at Inganess Bay and Wideford Hill.

Yellowknife, Canada

Northern lights over trees and lights in Yellowknife, Canada.

Yellowknife, the capital of Canada 's Northwest Territories, dubs itself the "Aurora Capital of the World." Thanks to its position in the middle of the auroral oval, the city puts on one of the world's most awe-inspiring light shows. The period from mid-November to the beginning of April is the recommended time to spot the aurora, but it's also possible to see the aurora during more hospitable weather from late summer to early fall as the lights are visible up to 240 days a year.

Located on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife boasts winter sports such as ice fishing and cross-country skiing. If you visit in March, plan to attend the monthlong Snowkings' Winter Festival, which features events and activities like a snow-carving competition, a snow castle, live music and more.

For a unique experience, book a tour through Aurora Village to view the lights. The property will pick you up from your hotel and take you to its site, where you can stay warm in a tent while sipping hot beverages. The Aboriginal-owned Aurora Village also offers activities such as dog-sledding or snowshoeing excursions.

Where to stay: Warm up in the fireside lounge at The Explorer Hotel in Yellowknife. Previous visitors note the warm and helpful staff as a strength here.

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Two people sitting on a the ice of a lake and watching the northern lights in the north of Sweden.

The optimal time for seeing the illuminated skies in the northern part of Sweden, known as Swedish Lapland, is between early September and late March. The small Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi sits around 125 miles above the Arctic Circle on the Torne River and is an ideal locale for aurora viewing. You'll fly to the nearby Kiruna Airport to get here. With the village's origins dating back to the 17th century, you can still find some of the original homesteads, including an old timber cottage. Today the village boasts 800 residents – and more than 1,000 dogs.

Where to stay: If you're up for a chilly overnight adventure, reserve accommodations at the world's first permanent ice hotel, the aptly named Icehotel 365. Each of its artist-designed suites is sculpted from ice with a unique theme and maintains temperatures around minus 5 degrees Celsius (about 23 degrees Fahrenheit). The rooms also feature beds with reindeer hides and thermal sleeping bags so you can bundle up during the night. While you're at the property, take advantage of the guided "Northern Lights Safari on Snowmobile" or embark on the "Moose Safari on Horseback" atop an Icelandic horse.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Northern lights above Hallgrimskirkja Church in central Reykjavik, Iceland.

October through March is the best time to chase the aurora borealis in Iceland . There are numerous natural parks and attractions throughout the country where you can view the show during the long and dark winter, but the capital city of Reykjavik also offers many options for accommodations, restaurants, tours and other activities for your visit. For optimum aurora viewing in the city away from the light pollution, head to Öskjuhlið. This wooded and hilly area in Reykjavik sits at 200 feet above sea level and has walkways and paths where you can see the nighttime show.

Atop this hill sits Perlan, which houses the only planetarium in the country and a museum featuring exhibits about Iceland. Perlan is also home to the world's first indoor ice cave and glacier exploratorium. During your visit, don't miss the panoramic views of the city from the building's fourth-floor observation deck. From this vantage point, you'll be able to see the Snæfellsjökull glacier; Keilir, a volcanic mountain; and Esja, the mountain of Reykjavik.

Where to stay: While in Reykjavik, splurge on an overnight tour with Buubble Tours. This experience includes breathtaking sightseeing spots and a night spent under the magical northern skies in a transparent bubble at the 5 Million Star Hotel. For longer stays, consider the eco-friendly Eyja Guldsmeden Hotel, with sweeping views of the city – guests love it for its cozy yet chic Scandinavian design.

Southern Iceland

Northern lights over Reynisfjara black sand beach in Iceland.

While Reykjavik is a great aurora-viewing spot if you like having amenities close by, consider getting out into Iceland's stunning, otherworldly countryside for a unique backdrop for the northern lights. One unique place to see them is the black sand beach at Reynisfjara (but watch out for the dangerous waves here). Alternatively, head to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon and seal habitat, where the aurora's reflections in the icy water are truly beautiful.

There's no shortage of tours that will stop by these locations and more for possible aurora sightings. Consider a 10- or 13-day tour around the country with Fun Travel, or a four-day option from Arctic Adventures. If you want to do things at your own place, it's also possible to self-drive – just know that road conditions can be icy, particularly in the depths of winter (although Icelandic roads are generally well-maintained).

Where to stay: Hotel Rangá is a formidable option for aurora-spotting. It offers a variety of special amenities, such as aurora wake-up calls, a lookout deck and snowsuits to keep you warm if you're outside viewing the lights. Past visitors praise Rangá for being a comfortable yet luxurious place to relax, be it in the outdoor hot tubs or the cozy and sociable bar.

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Northern lights reflected in water with mountains in eastern Greenland.

Greenland may not be the most accessible place to travel for viewing the northern lights, with limited flight options (mostly via Iceland), but those who make it here will be thrilled they did. The tundra of Kalaallit Nunaat – the Greenlandic name for the country – is one of the best places on the globe to see the aurora from September to early April.

For the more adventurous aurora seekers, head to the top of the Greenland Ice Cap for spectacular views of the lights. This impressive glacier covers 80% of the country and is accessible via the tiny town of Kangerlussuaq. Located on a fjord right along the Arctic Circle, the town, often described as a gateway to Greenland, was a former U.S. Air Force base and is now home to Greenland's main airport. The town is known for having clear skies on some 300 nights per year, so chances of a sighting are particularly good here.

Tour company Guide to Greenland offers various tours, from two-hour aurora-viewing trips to a tough but rewarding multi-night dog-sledding expedition across the ice. For a less strenuous experience, companies like Nordic Saga Tours offer cruises through the Arctic landscapes around Kangerlussuaq.

Embrace the winter and set sail for the Arctic Circle to experience the aurora in northern Norway. The 13-day "In Search of the Northern Lights" cruise itinerary with Viking departs from London for the North Sea with stops in ports of call that are top aurora-viewing locales, including Tromsø, Alta and Narvik, plus a stop in Amsterdam en route. The cruise ends in Bergen, Norway.

While on land, take in the natural beauty of the snow-blanketed landscapes and book bucket list excursions like a night spent in an igloo or a reindeer sledding adventure. You can also chase the lights into the wilderness by snowmobile, take a dog sled ride under the stars or view them from a Sámi tent atop the mountain Pæska in Alta. This Viking Ocean Cruises itinerary is offered with departure dates from mid-January to mid-March.

Headlands International Dark Sky Park, Michigan

Northern Lights shine through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Forest.

Regarded as one of the top spots in the U.S. to see the aurora outside Alaska, Headlands International Dark Sky Park sits at the top of Michigan 's lower peninsula, less than 5 miles from Mackinaw City. While the northern lights are less common here due to the relatively southern location, the best time to catch a glimpse of this phenomenon is typically during the spring and fall – and appearances can usually be predicted a couple of days in advance. The park even maintains an online Clear Sky Chart so you can check the weather forecast before you go.

There are also other stargazing opportunities throughout the year at Headlands. During the summer months the Milky Way is visible across the sky, and late summer evenings entertain visitors with meteor showers.

Where to stay: If you're visiting between late April and the end of October, splurge on a stay at Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island, where the aurora should also be visible. Guests describe this iconic property situated along the shoreline of Lake Huron as positively charming, thanks to its historic nature and manicured grounds. The resort also offers a host of outdoor activities from bike rentals to swimming.

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Located on the international border between Minnesota and Ontario, Voyageurs National Park is an approximately 218,000-acre labyrinth of boreal forests, lakes and streams. Voyageurs is Minnesota's only national park; it's also unique in that the park's interior is accessible only by boat, unless you visit by snowmobile in winter. As a certified International Dark Sky Park , Voyageurs provides opportunities to view the Milky Way on clear evenings, especially in the summer. Year-round aurora viewing is also possible on evenings with clear dark skies, but chances are better during the winter, when it's dark for longer.

For a guided stargazing tour – including the Milky Way, the constellations and (if you're lucky) the northern lights – book with Voyageurs Outfitters. If you're on your own, park officials note that almost any campsite is a good spot for northern lights viewing and stargazing. You can also check out the boat launch areas around Ash River, Kabetogama Lake and the Rainy Lake Visitor Center for top-notch views.

Where to stay: Those who prefer to sleep in a warm, cozy bed instead of camping under the stars can make reservations at the Cantilever Distillery + Hotel, a boutique Trademark Collection by Wyndham property in the nearby town of Ranier, Minnesota. Visitors report that there's a lot to like here, from the industrial-chic rooms to friendly staff to top-notch cocktails in the active distillery on the premises.

Abisko National Park, Sweden

Northern lights seen from Abisko Mountain Station in Abisko, Sweden.

Given its Arctic location, Sweden is one of the prime spots for aurora viewing in the Northern Hemisphere, with Swedish Lapland at the top of the list. The fall and winter months (from September to March) offer the best opportunities to witness the spectacle, as there is more darkness than light during the days.

If you're up for the Arctic adventure, December is an ideal month to visit Abisko National Park, which some regard as one of the best places on Earth to see the lights dance across the sky. The park's mountainous terrain and clear dark skies offer dramatic front-row seats for viewing the northern lights. The Aurora Sky Station is one of the best vantage points to see the aurora in the park. Join one of the expert presentations to learn about the science behind this fascinating phenomenon.

If you'd prefer to chase the lights with a curated tour, professional photographers and aurora-chasing guides at Visit Abisko lead three- to four-hour tours throughout the fall and winter. If you can, try to join the tours in fall, as this time of year offers a unique opportunity to view the lights both in the sky and reflected in the lakes and rivers, which you won't see in the winter months.

Where to stay: For cozy Nordic vibes, stay at Abisko Mountain Lodge, which also offers activities like ice climbing and snowmobile tours in winter. Guests love the excellent restaurant here, which offers Swedish specialties ranging from salmon to moose.

Nellim, Finland

Located a stone's throw from the Russian border in Finnish Lapland, this remote Arctic destination is a top-rated locale to view the northern lights due to the lack of light pollution. You'll be seriously out of the way of any built-up areas, as there's not even a paved road into Nellim. The best time to visit is between December and early April. This village is a great place to hunker down in a lodge and relax while enjoying a slice of life in the Finnish wilderness.

Where to stay: The Nellim Wilderness Hotel offers a perfect base with year-round activities, including aurora-chasing tours by car, snowmobile or on snowshoes. You can even take a sleigh ride through the snow to a campsite on Lake Inari to spot the aurora in pristine nature.

Beyond standard rooms, the Wilderness Hotel also offers glass-roofed cabins, as well as classic log cabins and bubble-shaped accommodations for two where guests can watch the dancing lights through the glass roof above your warm, cozy bed. When you're not chasing the lights, enjoy other Arctic activities like a husky safari, ice fishing, snowmobiling or a day in the snow meeting the local reindeer.

Saariselkä and Kakslauttanen, Finland

Northern lights above a snowy track through trees in the Arctic.

These two towns are around 150 miles above the Arctic Circle, with a prime location under the auroral oval, allowing as many as 200 opportunities per year to see the northern lights (weather permitting, of course). This area in Finnish Lapland is known for its stunning scenery, Sámi culture, cross-country and downhill skiing, and Urho Kekkonen National Park – one of Finland's largest.

Ski enthusiasts can roll two trips into one by hitting the slopes by day in Saariselkä and aurora spotting by night at Finland's northernmost ski resort. March into early April is the best time to view the aurora, as the Finnish Meteorological Institute notes that the weather is usually clearer at this time of year. But it's possible to see the northern lights at any time during the season from late August to early or mid-April.

Where to stay: Seven miles south of Saariselkä sits the village of Kakslauttanen, where you can book two- or four-person Glass Igloos at the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort. The new Kelo-Glass Igloos, which sleep up to six, mix the comforts of a log chalet with the visibility of the glass roof; enjoy a private sauna, a fireplace and more. There's also an impressive selection of year-round tours and activities at this resort, including northern lights excursions on snowmobiles or by horse-drawn carriage.

Stewart Island, New Zealand

Although they may be isolated, some far-south destinations offer the chance to see the aurora australis – or southern lights. While you might be able to see them year-round in some locations (just as with the northern lights), certain months are better for aurora viewing in the Southern Hemisphere. Stewart Island is regarded as one of the top spots to see the brilliant display in New Zealand , with 85% of the island encompassed by Rakiura National Park, so there are few people and virtually no light pollution. You can reach Stewart Island by flying in from Invercargill or taking a ferry from Bluff.

New Zealand's winter months – June to August – are the best time to see the southern lights; spring and fall are also not bad times to spot them. The brighter summer months, between December and February, make it more difficult to spot the aurora, but there's still a chance you'll catch a glimpse between midnight and 4 a.m.

Where to stay: Consider reserving a room with at Stewart Island Lodge, an intimate bed-and-breakfast. This beautiful property is just minutes by foot from the village of Oban, and the property will pick you up at the ferry terminal for your stay. Past visitors rave about the spectacular views of Halfmoon Bay and the Foveaux Strait from both the rooms and lodge terrace.

Southern Aurora Australis in Tasmania.

Tasmania sits approximately 150 miles south of mainland Australia. This mountainous island is one of relatively few places on the planet where it's theoretically possible to see the aurora 365 days a year due to its latitude, which allows for full darkness even on summer nights. The capital city of Hobart is the easiest point of entry: It's home to Tasmania's largest airport and serves as a convenient base. The city's burgeoning food and cultural scenes will also give you plenty to see and do.

From here you'll be able to reach several great viewing locations with unobstructed and open views of the sea along the southern and southeast coastlines, like Goat Bluff and Tinderbox Bay. When you're not staring at the night sky, splurge on a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter flight with Tasmanian Air Tours. Depending on your whims, your private pilot can whisk you away to soar over the sea cliffs; stop at a local winery to sample local vintages; or head south to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Port Arthur , Tasmania 's historic and most notorious prison.

Where to stay: Reserve accommodations at The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart. The historic luxury property is situated along the lively waterfront area with harbor views. Past guests admired the historic building housing the hotel and loved the heritage rooms featuring gas fireplaces for those cold Tasmanian nights.

Expedition cruise to Antarctica

The aurora australis as seen over the South Pole during austral winter.

If you're one of the lucky few people on the planet to travel to the southernmost continent on Earth, it may be pricey, but you'll have an adventure of a lifetime in Antarctica, especially if the aurora illuminates the sky. The southern lights are most visible in the winter months (between March and October), but due to weather conditions, only researchers brave the Antarctic winter – and they mostly stay indoors.

However, all hope is not lost if you seek to view the aurora australis in Antarctica. Late-season expedition cruises to this continent offered in March also bring the opportunity to view the southern lights and enjoy the end of Antarctica's fleeting summer. As the days shorten in length, you may encounter light snow across the extreme landscape and ice starting to form on the water's surface.

When it comes to wildlife viewing, humpback whale sightings are abundant, and you'll still see penguin colonies – including king and gentoo penguins. You can also keep your eyes peeled for elephant seals, leopard seals, wandering albatross and other species of birds. When night falls on clear evenings, look for the light show in the southern sky. Companies that offer March voyages include Swoop Antarctica, Atlas Ocean Voyages, Silversea Cruises , Aurora Expeditions and Hurtigruten Expeditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no one location that's widely accepted as the best place to see the northern lights. However, the strongest light displays are within what's called the "auroral oval": a rough circle around the Earth's magnetic northern pole that tends to occur around 60 to 70 degrees of latitude. The oval's exact size expands and contracts (some more southerly destinations can fall under it when the aurora is particularly strong), but there are certain locations that generally fall within the oval most of the time.

These places include:

  • Central and northern Alaska
  • Large areas of Yukon, the Northwest Territories and northern Quebec in Canada
  • Southern Greenland
  • Far northern Norway, Sweden and Finland

Within these areas, it could be argued that Iceland is the best place to see the aurora as it experiences much milder temperatures than some other areas within the oval. But this is subjective, and some travelers may prefer a location like Yellowknife in Canada for a full-on, very cold Arctic experience.

The northern lights are only visible when it's dark out. Since many of the best places to see them are so far north that they experience near-constant daylight in the summer, you'll generally want to schedule a trip between late August and early April. However, within this time period, there's some debate about the best time to catch the lights. For example, the aurora tends to be more active around the September and March equinoxes due to stronger solar winds – but on the other hand, your chances of seeing them may be higher in the depths of winter, since there's longer nights and therefore a longer window in which they might appear.

In more southern locations like Minnesota, it may be possible to see the light show in the summer months, but it's still advisable to go at a time when the nights are longer. It can also be worth trying to schedule your northern lights trip when there's a new moon: While the aurora can shine through moonlight, it may be harder to see if there's a full moon.

Of course, cloudy weather can block the aurora even if you go at the right time of year. So, it may be wise to research the local weather patterns at your chosen destination to find out if there's a month where you can expect clearer skies. In many cases, though, there's a little luck involved.

These two countries can offer excellent views of the northern lights, since both are directly under the typical auroral oval. Yet there are some differences to be aware of.

In Norway, you'll need to head to the north of the country to catch the aurora: While they have been sighted in Oslo , the capital and largest city, it's too far south to be a reliable vantage point. Cities like Tromsø are popular spots, but direct flights there are only possible from some European cities, so North Americans will have to take connecting flights. On the other hand, Iceland is generally easier to reach, with direct flights to its capital, Reykjavik, from a large number of U.S. destinations (particularly from the East Coast) with no further connection required.

Since clear skies are key for seeing the northern lights, weather is another factor to consider. In November, December and March, Reykjavik has statistically slightly more frequent clear skies, while in January and February, Tromsø is a little better, but the difference isn't big: Both places have clear skies only around 25 to 30% of the time in these months. Reykjavik has slightly warmer weather, though, so between that and the ease of access, it has a slight edge over Norway for seeing the northern lights.

Alaska and Iceland are known for stellar aurora light shows, so deciding between them may depend on which destination you find more convenient and more to your tastes. In Alaska , the city of Fairbanks is considered a great spot to catch the northern lights. (They can still be seen elsewhere in the state – for example, in Anchorage, although they're not so common in more southern locations like Juneau). The advantage of Fairbanks is that you won't need a passport , yet there aren't many direct flights from the lower 48 states. Despite being an international destination, Iceland may be more accessible (particularly from the eastern U.S.), thanks to fairly regular flights to Reykjavik from numerous American cities.

Fairbanks does offer statistically better weather for aurora viewing: It has clear skies more often than Reykjavik, particularly in March when the Alaska city experiences them around 45% of the time (compared to about 25% for Reykjavik). But you'll have to be able to tolerate the cold. While temperatures in Reykjavik hover around freezing in midwinter, Fairbanks is a veritable deep freeze, with average highs around 5 degrees Fahrenheit down to lows colder than minus 5 in December.

Hidden Gems to Visit in Barcelona: Unveiling the City’s Best-Kept Secrets

Hidden+Gems+to+Visit+in+Barcelona%3A+Unveiling+the+City%E2%80%99s+Best-Kept+Secrets

Chances are that you already visited the vibrant capital of Catalonia, Barcelona. A city renowned for all its iconic landmarks, bustling with history and culture, but it is at those places like the Sagrada Familia or Park Guell where most tourists end their journey… but Barcelona is a huge treasure of hidden gems that are waiting for you to discover it.

As a seasoned Barcelover who has fallen in love with the city and explored every nook and cranny, I invite you to step off the beaten path and explore the lesser-known places of this enchanting city.

So, prepare your stay at one of the many hotels in Barcelona , and let’s explore the hidden gems the city has to offer:

Teatre Grec: The Nature’s Amphitheater

There’s no better place to start this journey to hidden gems than paying a visit to the Teatre Grec nestled inside the stunning   Montjuïc Castle, but while the castle draws crowds for its panoramic views, the real magic lies in the Teatre Grec.

It’s an open-air amphitheater surrounded by lush greenery, where the birds welcome all the visitors as they take a seat in this charming space.

The first thing you will notice is the slightly rugged ambiance, which adds to its allure and makes it an ideal spot to disconnect, read a book, and soak in the tranquility.

Enjoy the Panoramic Views in Bunkers del Carmel

Next, your best bet is to visit the Bunkers El Carmel, also known as Turo de La Rovira. It’s a viewpoint located high up in the Parque del Guinardó, this stunning landmark often missed by tourists offers a jaw-dropping view of Barcelona.

And the coolest side of history is that these abandoned anti-aircraft defenses provide an unrivaled panorama of the city.

For the best experience, arrive before dawn. The cityscape in the early morning light is pure magic.

Explore the Ancient Tranquility in Sant Pau del Camp

For the next hidden gem, you will step back in time and visit a unique church, a Benedictine monastery, the Sant Pau del Camp. It is the oldest and most well-preserved church in Barcelona, offering stunning Romanesque architecture and a serene courtyard that transports you to another era.

Explore the cloisters, admire the frescoes, and imagine monks going about their daily lives centuries ago.

Learn About Science at CosmoCaixa Museum

Barcelona is home to countless museums worth checking out but one that doesn’t get the attention it needs is CosmoCaixa. It’s the perfect place to escape from the crowded areas of the city and immerse yourself in the exhibitions the museum has to offer.

This science museum offers interactive exhibits, a rainforest simulation, and a planetarium. It’s a playground for curious minds, and the perfect spot to ignite your inner scientist.

Visit A Hidden Square, Plaça Sant Felip Neri

The city has a bunch of stunning squares that get crowded with tourists each year, but the Plaça Sant Felip Neri is a hidden gem for most of us, it’s actually situated in the Gothic Quarter and exudes quiet charm.

The square is surrounded by historic buildings and its tragic past. It was scarred by the Spanish Civil War, but nowadays that adds depth to its beauty.

So, sit on a bench, listen to the fountain, and reflect on the layers of history surrounding you.
