Should I Get Pet Insurance? Pros and Cons Revealed

Pet insurance can help you to stay on top of your pet’s health knowing some of the visit is going to be covered, but there are some disadvantages.

Pets make for the perfect companion to those who live alone or want to expand their family. But the sad truth is that they can be costly to care for , especially when an unexpected illness creeps up. If you have a pet, you’re probably already aware of this and are considering buying pet insurance before taking your furry friend to the vet.

Pet insurance wasn’t always an option for pet owners . But, with the cost of pet care being as expensive as it is, and only rising higher, insuring a pet is sounding more appealing to many. If you’re on the fence about buying pet insurance before heading to the vet, we’ve outlined below a few important things to consider.

Should I get pet insurance before going to the vet?

It may be a good idea to purchase pet insurance before going to the vet, but you’ll need to consider the reason for your visit and the time between starting a policy and the appointment date. Just like traditional health insurance policies , pet policies often carry waiting periods and exclusions depending on the company you purchase from.

For example, most pet insurers impose a 14 or 15-day waiting period before coverage actually begins. So, if you purchased a policy today and the insurer has a 15-day waiting period, you’ll need to wait out those 15 days before you can submit a claim.

Now, there are some companies like MetLife that offer accident and wellness coverage the same day you purchase your policy. Others, like Healthy Paws , do subject pet owners to a 15-day waiting period, which means you’ll have to wait until after it expires to submit a claim for an accident or illness.

In addition to waiting periods, most pet insurance companies also won’t cover pre-existing conditions. A pre-existing condition is an injury or illness your pet suffered before the policy was purchased. However, there may be some companies that extend coverage to pets with pre-existing conditions, so do some research before forgoing coverage altogether.

What are some of the other disadvantages of buying pet insurance?

While pet insurance can certainly help you to stay on top of your pet’s health knowing some or all of the visit is going to be covered, there are still a few other disadvantages that come with buying it. Here is a list of them:

  • Most pet insurance plans are reimbursement-based, which means you’ll still be required to pay for the full cost of the visit upfront. Companies generally offer reimbursement choices of 70 percent, 80 percent, or 90 percent. The good news is that some pet insurers are able to process claims in under 10 days. This means you can expect to be reimbursed quickly for a portion of the visit if the claim is covered.
  • You may have to pay a deductible . Most pet insurance plans carry a deductible or an amount you have to pay before coverage kicks in. So, if you select a plan with a $250 deductible, you’ll be responsible for the first $250 before the insurance coverage takes effect.

What is the average cost of pet insurance?

Although pet insurance monthly premiums can reach as high as $100 a month, most pet owners pay between $25 and $50 monthly for coverage. Policy prices are calculated using your pet’s species, breed, age, and sex. It’s worth noting that most pet insurance companies do provide free quotes which makes comparing policies much easier.

While pet insurance may seem like an added expense, knowing you might only have to pay 20 percent or 30 percent of their visit can help you avoid a large vet bill. It can also reduce the financial burden of having to cover multiple wellness checks, vaccinations, or worse, surgery in the event of an unexpected accident.

Another option is to set aside a certain amount of money each month (for example, the amount you would pay for a pet health insurance premium) in a savings account or emergency fund so that you can cover pet expenses when they arise. Planning ahead, whether you get pet insurance or save money, is important so that you have the extra peace of mind knowing that you can cover vet care for your pet.

Does pet insurance cover routine vet visits?

By   Allstate

Last updated : January 1

A pet health insurance policy that includes a wellness plan will typically help cover the costs of routine veterinary visits, such as exams and preventive care. Pet wellness plans, sometimes called a preventative pet care plan or routine pet care coverage, may be optional on your pet insurance policy. Typically, you pay a premium for the plan, and your insurer helps reimburse you for costs associated with routine vet visits, such as physical exams or vaccines.

What do pet wellness plans cover?

A pet wellness plan is designed to help cover the costs of routine preventive care, according to the Insurance Information Institute (III). A pet wellness plan may help pay for the following services:

  • Routine physical exams (such as an annual checkup)
  • Flea and heartworm prevention
  • Vaccinations

Some insurers may offer wellness plans that come in tiers with varying coverage levels (and your premium might be higher if you choose more coverage). A higher-tiered wellness plan sometimes provides coverage for dental care or preventive surgeries, such as spaying or neutering.

In addition to pet wellness plans, traditional pet insurance policies also offer other types of coverage. According to the III, these are some other levels of pet health coverage that may be available:

  • Basic coverage, also referred to as standard pet health insurance, which may help pay for medical care after accidental injuries or illnesses.
  • Comprehensive coverage, which may help cover costs for vet visits, prescriptions, X-rays and lab fees, in addition to costs related to accidental injuries and illnesses.

Read your pet insurance policy carefully or check with your insurer to understand what's covered by your pet's insurance plan.

How much of my vet bills will a pet wellness plan cover?

The percentage or dollar amount of a veterinary bill that your pet insurance will help cover depends on your plan. As with most insurance policies, pet health insurance plans typically include premiums , deductibles , co-pays and limits that will affect how much the insurer pays. Most pet wellness policies are also set up on a reimbursement basis, says the National Association of Insurance Commissioners . This means you will typically pay a premium for a pet wellness plan and pay for routine veterinary care up front, and then be reimbursed by the insurer for a portion of the bill afterwards.

For example, if you bring your dog, Max, in for his check-up, you'll pay Max's veterinarian for services for that day, including the exam and shots. Once you've submitted the claim to the insurer, you will be reimbursed for covered costs.

What is not covered by a pet wellness plan?

Your pet insurance policy may list certain exclusions, or things not covered by your plan. According to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA), some common exclusions may include:

  • Treatment for pre-existing medical conditions
  • Care related to pregnancy and/or birth
  • Grooming and claw/nail trimming

The III also notes that there may be coverage restrictions for hereditary conditions, such as hip dysplasia, and that some providers may have age limits for coverage. Read your pet insurance policy documents or check with your insurer so you know what kinds of treatment and conditions are (and are not) covered. You should also keep in mind that there is typically up to a 30-day waiting period before your pet insurance plan will take effect, says the NAPHIA. This means any illnesses or accidents that occur before the waiting period is up will not be eligible for reimbursement.

Most insurers also only offer wellness plans for cats and dogs, according to the NAPHIA. You should check to see what coverage is available if you have another type of pet, such as a bird, rabbit or reptile.

Cost Considerations

The potential costs associated with the visit can vary based on geographical location and the specific services provided. It's a good idea to inquire about the fees associated with the visit beforehand, including the cost of the comprehensive physical examination, vaccinations, deworming, and any additional services or tests that may be recommended for your puppy's specific needs.

Some veterinary practices may offer pet wellness plans , which can help manage the costs of routine veterinary care by spreading them out over monthly payments. These plans often include services such as vaccinations, preventive treatments, and regular checkups. It may be worth discussing the availability and benefits of such plans with the veterinary practice.

When to Take a Puppy to the Vet

How to Prepare for Your Puppy Checkup

Preparing for your puppy's first vet visit is crucial to ensure a smooth experience. Here are some steps to help you get ready:

1. Gather important documents

Organize and compile any adoption or breeder paperwork, vaccination records, and medical history to provide the veterinarian with a comprehensive understanding of your puppy's background.

2. Note your questions and concerns

List any questions or concerns about your puppy's health, behavior, diet, or general care. This way, you won't forget to address anything during the appointment and can receive the necessary guidance.

3. Familiarize your puppy with car travel

To ensure your puppy's comfort, gradually introduce them to car travel . If needed, bring essential supplies like a leash, treats, and a carrier or crate. These items will help keep your puppy secure and comfortable during the visit.

What to Bring to the Appointment

To ensure a successful and organized first vet visit for your puppy, it's important to bring the following items:

Vaccination records or medical history

Bring any documentation regarding your puppy's vaccinations or previous medical history if available. This information will assist the veterinarian in understanding your puppy's health background.

Prescribed medications or supplements

If your puppy is currently taking any medications or supplements, be sure to bring them along. This will allow the veterinarian to review the prescribed treatments and provide appropriate guidance.

Fresh stool sample

Some veterinarians may request a fresh stool sample for testing. Check with your vet before the visit and, if requested, bring a small sample in a clean container. This helps identify any potential internal parasites or other issues.

Comfort items

Help your puppy feel secure during the visit by bringing along their favorite comfort items. This could include a familiar blanket, toy, or bedding that carries their scent. These items can provide reassurance and help reduce any anxiety they may experience.

Identification and contact information

Ensure you have proper identification for your puppy , such as a collar with a tag displaying your contact information. It's essential to have this information readily available in case of any unexpected situations during the visit.

Conclusion

Ensuring your puppy's health and well-being starts with their very first vet visit. By prioritizing this crucial step, you lay the foundation for a lifetime of health and happiness. Don't wait – Book a puppy wellness exam now and give your furry friend the best start in life.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the first vet appointment take .

The duration of the first vet appointment can vary, but typically it lasts around 30 minutes to an hour, allowing the vet to conduct a thorough examination and address any concerns or questions you may have.

Should I carry my puppy to the vet?

It is generally advised to carry your puppy to the vet for their safety and to ensure a stress-free journey. Using a carrier or holding them securely in your arms can help keep them comfortable and prevent any accidents during transportation.

Should I feed my dog before or after a vet visit?

You may wish to withhold food for a few hours prior to transport as it is not uncommon for puppies to experience motion sickness. The upside of a mobile veterinary visit is that no travel is needed and thus fasting is generally not necessary or recommended.

Should I bathe my dog before a vet appointment?

It is not necessary to bathe your dog before a vet appointment unless specifically instructed by your vet. However, ensuring your dog is clean and groomed can help with a thorough examination.

Should I get pet insurance before the first vet visit?

While it is not necessary to get pet insurance before the first vet visit, it is a wise decision to consider pet insurance or a pet wellness plan. Pet insurance can help cover unexpected medical expenses and provide financial protection in the long run, while wellness plans typically include the bundled preventative vet care services your puppy will need.

Preparing Your Puppy for a First Vet Visit

Posted: 03/18/2024 | BY: Jenna Bruce | Categories: Behavior , Dog , Top Tips

If you think back to your childhood days, a trip to the doctor was one of the worst ways to spend your afternoon. Your puppy feels the exact same way. No living thing likes to be prodded or poked, it’s just scary! But there are some things you can do to make that first vet visit a breeze for BOTH of you!

pet insurance before first vet visit

5 Tips for Making That First Vet Visit a Breeze

One of the sweetest things about having a puppy is getting to experience all of those “firsts” together. But that first vet visit… ouch… that can be a real beast.

The truth is, vet visits don’t have to be scary to our fur babies. BY preparing puppies for the inevitable, you can help them see these visits as a pawsitive experience. Here are some steps we recommend:

Use a Fear-Free Vet Clinic

Look for clinics that are “fear-free” certified. This certification means the clinic staff has been trained to remove or reduce as many stress triggers as possible from the environment. These clinics focus on making sure pups and kitties are comfortable and relaxed as much as possible. The staff helps animals create positive associations with all aspects of vet visits, from initial arrival to exams, vaccinations, and more.

A Breezy Car Ride

Most dogs love to go on car rides. But what do you do if your puppy feels anxious in the car? Spend some time allowing your pup to get used to being in a car.

First just allow your dog to spend some time in the car with you with the engine off, parked in the driveway. Once they get used to that, start the engine and sit in the driveway for a few minutes. Be sure to praise them.

Finally, when your pup feels secure with the engine running, take them on a few short drives around the block. Each day, get your pup in the car start it, and drive around the block, praising them and making a fuss.

If your pup still seems a bit anxious, you may want to ask your vet about using something like ADAPTIL (DAP) spray. DAP mimics the pheromones a mother produces when her puppies are nursing to keep them calm. Many pup parents use DAP to help keep their pups calm during stressful situations, such as car rides and thunderstorms.

small dog life expectancy

Be Prepared

Ensuring your puppy has a good first vet visit means being prepared. What might you need to bring to make the experience positive from start to finish? Treats, toys and their blanket and bed are a few items that may help your pup feel comfortable and happy. Those slippery floors can be hard for little paws to navigate, so think about bringing a yoga mat or carpet runner to put down on the floor so your pup can feel safe and confident.

Have Some Fun

Once inside the exam room, feel free to help your pup have some fun. Vet offices aren’t libraries and no one says you have to sit there quietly, scrolling through your emails on your phone.

Instead, get out one of the toys you’ve brought and have a little play time with your pup. This will help them to associate the exam room with fun.

Be Your Puppy’s Advocate

If you live somewhere where there is not a fear-free clinic vet within 60+ miles of you, then you will have to be your puppy’s advocate to ensure their comfort is priority for everyone who interacts with them.

As an example, there are many clinics that want to scoop up the puppy and whisk them to the back  where the examination and vaccinations will take place. Being separated from their human in this way can be very traumatizing for them. You are well within your rights to ask that all examinations and vaccinations happen in the exam room with you there. Most vets and vet techs will have no problem accommodating you. If your clinic has a problem, find a new clinic!

pet insurance before first vet visit

The Art of Distraction

Instead of lending a hand to try and restrain your scared puppy during the vaccinations, distract them instead. Bring a little dog-safe peanut butter with you and allow your pup to lick it off of a spoon or paper plate as the vaccinations are being given. Many puppies won’t even notice the shots have been given. Not only will the treat help distract your puppy from the vaccination, but it will continue to help them associate positivity with being handled by vet staff.

By preparing your puppy and making their first vet visit a fun and pawsitive experience, you can help them develop a wonderful relationship with the vet and clinic staff.

Take the Fear Out of Paying Those Vet Bills

Our fur babies aren’t the only ones who can feel fear at the vet! Getting hit with an unexpected and costly vet bill can be very stressful. A pet insurance plan that reimburses you for up to 90% of the vet bill will bring you peace of mind.

What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Sarah Schlichter

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Pet insurance covers medicine, surgery, hospitalization and other expenses if your pet is sick or hurt.

Most pet insurance plans pay to treat cancer, diabetes and other common illnesses, but coverage varies for things like dental care and hereditary conditions.

Your pet insurance coverage will vary based on the limits and deductibles you choose.

Like human health insurance, pet insurance covers the cost of medical care. If your furry friend gets seriously sick or injured, the vet bills for treatment may add up fast. Having pet insurance coverage can help.

Plans can vary significantly from one company to another, so it’s important to understand what pet insurance covers before you buy it.

Types of pet insurance coverage

When shopping for pet insurance, you’ll likely see the following three types of plans.

Accident and illness coverage

The most common type of pet insurance plan covers accidents and illnesses. So if your dog is hit by a car or gets a urinary tract infection, your plan would cover their treatment, up to your coverage limit. Below are some of the scenarios that an accident and illness plan could cover.

Note that accident and illness plans cover only things that go wrong with your pet’s health. They won’t reimburse you for preventive care like annual checkups and vaccinations unless you buy a wellness add-on (more on that below).

Why choose this type of coverage: Accident and illness plans cover the broadest range of problems that your pet could have. They’re also the most customizable and widely available, which means you’ll have plenty of options to find the coverage you need.

Accident-only coverage

Accident-only plans are more limited than accident and illness plans. They’ll pay to treat accidental injuries like the ones listed above but won’t cover expenses due to cancer, infections or other illnesses. They tend to be cheaper than accident and illness plans because they cover so much less.

Not all pet insurers sell accident-only plans.

Why choose this type of coverage: In some cases, accident-only plans may be the only option for pets who are too old at the time of enrollment to qualify for an accident and illness policy. An accident-only plan may also be a good choice if you can’t afford accident and illness coverage but you still want some emergency insurance for your pet.

Wellness plans

Wellness or preventive care plans are typically sold as add-ons to an accident and illness policy (or, less commonly, an accident-only policy). They often offer a set list of routine services for which they’ll reimburse you, along with an annual limit for each.

Depending on the plan, those services might include:

Wellness exams.

Vaccinations.

Heartworm or FeLV/FIV test.

Fecal or internal parasite test.

Flea, tick and/or heartworm medication.

Microchipping.

Dental cleaning.

Spay or neuter surgery.

Why choose this type of coverage: A wellness plan may save you money if you know you’ll need all or most of the services it covers. Otherwise, you may end up paying more for the coverage than you get back in reimbursements. Do the math before you commit.

What does pet insurance cover?

Pet insurance covers treatment when your furry friend gets hurt or sick. As long as the animal’s condition is covered by your plan, your insurer will usually reimburse you for prescription medicine, surgery, diagnostic tests, hospitalization and emergency care.

But beyond these basics, coverage can vary quite a bit among plans. Your pet insurance may also cover:

Alternative and rehabilitative treatment

Some plans cover physical therapy and a wide range of alternative treatments, such as acupuncture and chiropractic care. Others charge more to add this coverage. There’s no standard definition of alternative care, so read the details to find out exactly which treatments your pet is eligible for.

Behavioral therapies

If your vet recommends treatment for issues such as aggression or compulsive behavior, some plans will cover the expense, and some won’t. Others may charge extra for a package that includes this coverage.

Congenital or hereditary conditions

A congenital condition is an abnormality your pet is born with that can lead to later complications. A hereditary condition, such as hip dysplasia or patellar luxation, is passed down to an animal from its parents. Many plans will cover such conditions as long as your pet didn’t show symptoms before you bought the policy. Other plans may limit coverage for these conditions.

Some plans reimburse you for procedures and drugs but don’t cover exam fees when your pet is sick or injured. Others include this coverage or offer it for an additional charge.

Prescription diets and supplements

If your vet prescribes a certain type of food or supplement to treat your pet’s medical condition, some plans will pay for it. Others won’t, or will charge extra for the coverage. Learn more about pet insurance and prescription food .

Dental care

If you want to keep your furry pal’s chompers in good shape, read your policy’s fine print about dental coverage. You might find, for instance, that your insurer will cover certain issues such as broken teeth or congenital conditions but not dental diseases like gingivitis. Or your carrier may cover dental disease only if your pet has had a recent cleaning under anesthesia.

Pet insurance generally won’t cover routine dental cleanings unless you have a wellness plan.

Learn more about pet dental insurance .

Final expenses

The end of your pet’s life may bring not only heartbreak but also expenses associated with euthanasia, cremation or burial. Depending on your plan, pet insurance may cover some or all of these costs.

What does pet insurance not cover?

Most pet insurance plans won’t cover:

Pre-existing conditions

A pre-existing condition is a medical problem that your pet had before you bought the policy or one that cropped up during the waiting period before your coverage began. Almost no pet insurance plan will cover these.

One exception is AKC , which offers coverage for pre-existing conditions in some states once your pet has been insured for a year. Other companies will cover curable conditions that have been symptom-free for a certain period of time. Learn more about pet insurance and pre-existing conditions .

Buyer beware

If you decide to increase the coverage limits on your existing policy, some companies will treat this as though you’re buying a whole new plan. That means your waiting periods may start over, and conditions that your policy previously covered will be considered pre-existing going forward.

Cosmetic or elective surgeries

Pet insurance generally won’t pay for procedures such as declawing, tail docking or ear cropping unless they’re deemed medically necessary.

Routine and wellness care

Most accident and illness plans don’t cover the basics like annual vaccinations, spaying, neutering and teeth cleaning unless you’ve paid for a wellness add-on.

Expenses associated with breeding or pregnancy are another common exclusion, though you may be able to add a rider to cover these costs.

Pet liability

If your dog bites your neighbor’s child or damages your friend’s hardwood floors, most pet insurance plans won’t help you. But you may have coverage through your homeowners or renters insurance. These policies generally include personal liability coverage that can pay if you’re found responsible for injuries or damage your pet causes. Learn more about dog liability insurance .

Pet insurance coverage by company

Below are some of the most popular pet insurance companies along with the coverage plans they offer. (Note that availability may vary depending on your pet and where you live.)

How does pet insurance work?

After you buy your pet insurance plan, there’s typically a waiting period before coverage begins. The coverage for accidental injuries may begin after just a few days. The waiting period for illness coverage is often longer, such as 14 or 15 days.

There might also be waiting periods of several months to a year for orthopedic problems such as cruciate ligament issues or hip dysplasia.

If your pet needs treatment during these waiting periods, the plan will pay nothing — and any issues that arise will be considered pre-existing conditions in the future.

» MORE: Pet insurance waiting periods: What you need to know

Most pet insurance plans allow you to bring your furry friend to any licensed vet for treatment, so you don’t need to worry about whether a given clinic is “in network.”

In most cases, you’ll pay the vet bill upfront, then submit your receipt to the insurance company for reimbursement. However, some pet insurers may be able to pay your vet directly so you don’t have to put out as much of your own money.

Below are a few factors that could affect how much of your vet bill your insurer will cover.

Coverage limits

Most plans let you choose an annual coverage limit. This is the most your plan will reimburse you for vet expenses in a given year. It’s often a fixed amount such as $2,500 or $10,000. If you spend more than that amount on vet bills in a given year, you’ll have to cover the excess yourself.

Many companies offer an unlimited option, though that type of coverage may cost more.

Some companies also impose lifetime or per-incident coverage limits.

Deductibles

A pet insurance deductible is the amount of vet expenses you need to pay before you’re eligible for reimbursement. So if you have a $500 deductible and your dog needs only $200 worth of treatment in a given year, your insurer wouldn’t reimburse you for any of it.

Most companies charge an annual deductible. One exception is Trupanion , which offers per-condition deductibles in many states. If your pet developed a chronic condition like diabetes that required treatment for many years, you’d pay the deductible only once.

Reimbursement amounts

Once you’ve met your deductible, you still might not have 100% coverage for your vet expenses. That’s because most plans also come with a reimbursement percentage — usually 70%, 80% or 90%. Here’s an example of how that could work:

Buddy the dog swallows a sock and needs surgery to remove it. Your pet insurance plan has a $500 annual deductible and a 90% reimbursement rate, and this is your first vet visit of the year. Your bill for the surgery is $1,500. The insurer would subtract your $500 deductible, then pay 90% of the remaining bill, for a total of $900.

If Buddy needed further follow-up treatment within the same policy term, your insurer would cover 90% of your costs because you’d already met your deductible.

Note that many pet insurers apply your reimbursement rate before they apply the deductible. So for the scenario above, the insurer would first deduct the 10% of the bill you’re responsible for, leaving a remaining vet bill of $1,350 ($1,500 - $150). Then it would subtract your $500 deductible, for a total of $850 of reimbursement.

Who can get pet insurance?

Most pet insurance companies insure only dogs and cats. ASPCA insures horses, too, while Nationwide sells plans for birds, snakes, rabbits and other “exotic” pets.

Some insurers accept new pets only within certain age limits. Often, puppies and kittens must be at least 6 to 10 weeks old.

Although some plans have no maximum age limits, others restrict coverage for older pets or cut off first-time enrollment at ages 8 to 14. Once you’re enrolled, though, most plans will offer pet insurance coverage for life as long as you continue paying the premiums.

Some plans also require your pet to have seen a vet recently, or ask that your pet undergo an exam before they’ll sell you a policy.

Do you need pet insurance?

There’s no law requiring you to buy insurance for your pet. Most people pay their vet bills themselves instead of getting pet insurance. For animals who stay relatively healthy, this is likely cheaper than buying insurance.

However, having pet insurance can save you money if your pet develops a severe illness or an injury requiring expensive surgery. In some cases, it could even spare you a difficult decision between euthanasia and going into debt to pay for treatment you can’t afford.

To help you weigh the pros and cons, see Is Pet Insurance Worth It?

What does pet insurance cost?

The average annual cost for a pet insurance policy covering accidents and illness was about $676 for dogs and $383 for cats in 2023, according to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association [0] North American Pet Health Insurance Association . Pet Insurance in North America: State of the Industry 2024 . Accessed Apr 11, 2024. View all sources . The average annual premium for an accident-only plan was $204 for dogs and $116 for cats.

Prices for pet insurance are based on:

Your pet’s age and breed. The older your pet is, the more you’ll pay. Some breeds are more expensive to insure than others because they tend to have more health problems.

Your ZIP code. If vet costs are high in your area, your pet insurance will likely be more expensive.

Amount and type of coverage. The more the policy covers, the more you’ll pay.

Reimbursement level and deductible. The lower the reimbursement level and higher the deductible, the less you’ll pay for the plan.

Insurance company. Prices vary by company.

How to get pet insurance

Determine the type and amount of coverage you need, and then get pet insurance quotes from several companies. Online quotes are available from just about every major pet insurer, including options to customize your coverage.

Check that the policies have similar reimbursement levels, deductibles and coverage limits to make sure you’re getting a fair price comparison.

Before you buy, read the fine print to make sure you didn’t miss anything in the restrictions and exclusions. Many pet insurers have sample policies on their websites.

Note that you’re likely buying a policy your pet will have for life. With other types of insurance, shopping around each year for a new policy can save you money. But the older your pet gets, the more pre-existing conditions they’ll likely have — and none of them will be covered if you buy a new pet insurance plan. So do your best to pick a company and a level of coverage that you’ll be happy with long term.

Generally no, unless you purchase extra coverage for wellness and preventive care. Pet insurance plans are designed to cover unexpected accidents and illnesses, but spaying and neutering are considered routine care for your pet. Learn more about pet insurance and spay or neuter surgery .

It depends on the plan and the type of care. For example, if your dog breaks a tooth in an accident, many plans will cover the treatment. But annual cleaning would likely fall under the umbrella of preventive care and be covered only by a wellness plan. Treatment for dental illnesses varies by policy.

Like neutering and spaying, vaccination is a routine expense that typically won’t be covered outside of a wellness add-on.

Pre-existing conditions are almost never covered. Some companies make an exception for “curable” conditions that haven’t shown any symptoms for a given period of time, typically six to 12 months before you bought the policy. And AKC will cover even incurable pre-existing conditions in some states, following a 12-month waiting period.

Most pet insurance plans will cover medically necessary surgery unless it’s for a pre-existing condition or other issue excluded from your policy. Spay and neuter surgery generally isn’t covered unless you have a wellness plan. Check out Does Pet Insurance Cover Surgery? to learn more.

Pet insurance will usually pay for medication your vet prescribes as long as it’s treating a covered accident or illness. For example, pain medication after surgery for a broken bone would likely be covered, but a heartworm preventive probably wouldn’t be (unless you had wellness coverage).

9 Questions to Ask During Your Puppy's First Vet Visit

Are you prepared for your puppy's first vet visit? Here are 9 questions to ask pertaining to care, vaccination, diet, pet insurance, and socialization.

rsz_shutterstock_1020103849_new.jpg

Raising a puppy is most definitely _not_a one-person job. Novice and veteran pet owners alike rely on a team of supporters to help keep their dogs happy and healthy from puppyhood into their senior years. Your vet is your most vital pet care partner, supporting you throughout each stage of your dog’s development, but they can’t do it all on their own either. You can make their job a little easier by doing your part at home and coming to every appointment prepared. Make sure to ask these questions during your early vet visits.

Is My Puppy Healthy?

Ailments may be the last thing on your mind when you admire your spry, young dog, but looks can be deceiving. Mild or even serious health conditions could be hiding just below the surface. During your initial veterinary visit, your dog’s new doctor will conduct a thorough evaluation to ensure they’re truly in tip-top shape.

What Should I Feed My Puppy?

A dog’s nutritional needs will evolve as they age. Puppies require a different assortment of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients than adolescents, adults, and elderly dogs do. Dog food manufacturers offer a host of foods specially formulated for growing pups. Ask your veterinarian what types of food they’d recommend and how often you should feed your new pet.

Which Vaccinations Does My Puppy Need?

Most puppies require a number of vaccinations to protect their vulnerable immune systems and ensure they can safely interact with their four-legged peers. Your vet can inform you on the importance of each essential vaccine and help develop a schedule for return visits to get your puppy vaccinated.

When Should I Spay or Neuter My Puppy?

Unless you’re planning on breeding your pup, they’ll probably need to go under for surgery during their early months. The ideal time for spaying or neutering varies based on a dog’s size and breed. Trust your vet to guide you and help you make the right decision.

When Can I Walk My Dog?

Puppies are more vulnerable to infection and illness than older dogs. Discuss risk factors with your vet to determine when it’s safe to take a stroll with your dog and let them explore the outside world. You may not need to wait until they’ve undergone a full course of puppy vaccinations.

When Can My Dog Interact with Other Puppies?

As much as you may want to rush out to the dog park or schedule a puppy playdate, it may not be safe to socialize your puppy right out of the gate. Talk to your veterinarian about when and how you can safely introduce your puppy to other dogs.

What Types of Parasite Protection Does My Dog Need?

Pests like fleas, ticks, and heartworms are more than just a nuisance. They can seriously affect your dog’s health! Ask your vet about risk factors in your region to ensure you’re consistently doing everything you can to protect your dog.

How Can I Keep My Pet Healthy?

Providing for your dog’s health is a full-time job. Even without the assistance of your vet, there are plenty of steps you can (and should) take at home to ensure they’re always feeling their best. Make sure that topics like exercise, dental care, and nutrition factor into your early conversations with your vet.

Should I Purchase Pet Insurance?

A pet insurance policy offers peace of mind and financial reimbursement throughout a dog’s life. Though the industry is growing rapidly, a vast majority of dog owners still haven’t purchased policies for their pooches. Ask your insurance agent about how insurance can help address the financial burdens of pet healthcare.

5 Tips For Your First Vet Visit

Woody Mawhinney and his dog Wrigley

Congratulations! You’re adding a pet to your family! In all of the excitement, don’t forget to schedule a vet visit for your new family member. It is important to take your new pet in as soon as possible for a checkup to make sure it is healthy and happy. Vet checkup costs can vary, so ask the receptionist how much the bill will be. Even better, purchase pet insurance and add on a wellness plan to help cover your vet bills.

Preparing for the new adventure of going to the vet for the first time can help to reduce anxiety for both you and your new pet. Follow these simple steps to make visiting the vet a pleasant experience for everyone involved. Starting on the right foot will help future visits be stress-free, and they will help you avoid some future vet checkup costs.

1) Ask for Recommendations

When looking for a vet, start by asking pet owners you trust for recommendations. Ask them why they like their vet and how their pets respond to going to the vet. Also, ask about the vet checkup costs so you can compare prices.

2) Take a Tour

Before you take your pet to the vet, take a tour for yourself. Observe how their waiting room runs, how friendly the staff acts with both the animals and the owners. Take this opportunity to ask any questions you might have about the vet, support staff, or what to do if your pet needs emergency care. Ask for an overview of vet checkup costs.

3) Help Your Pet Get Used to Your Vehicle

Before the first official appointment, take your pet on a few fun vehicle rides. Your destination on these practice trips should be pleasant experiences for your pet, but the actual car ride should mimic what it will be like on the day of the vet appointment. Don’t let the vet checkup cost more in stress than it needs to.

4) Take a Practice Trip to the Vet Clinic

Introduce your pet to the clinic beforehand. Take your pet into the waiting room and chat with the receptionist while your pet has a chance to get used to the new environment. Keep your pet close to you and on a leash, though. Make sure you know what the vet checkup cost will be.

Your stress can cause your pet stress. On the day of the first appointment, try to stay as calm as possible. The vet should be a friend to you and your pet. Make sure you have budgeted for the vet checkup cost or purchased pet insurance with a wellness add-on, so the bill doesn’t add to your stress level. Speak calmly to your pet, and stay close. You will be the reassurance that your pet needs to have a successful first experience.

Something to Remember

Enjoy getting to know your new family member! Remember, your vet is there to take care of your pet and ease your mind. A little planning and practice will make sure your pet’s first visit to the vet is an enjoyable one. Looking into pet insurance and pet wellness plans can help ease the strain of vet checkup costs on your wallet.

Mobile Waiting Periods hero

Pet Insurance Waiting Periods

Understanding pet insurance waiting periods is key to knowing when certain illness, accidents and conditions are fully covered by your pet insurance.

Waiting periods for pet insurance exist to prevent fraud and are required for all newly enrolling pets or new pets being added to an existing policy. If there were no waiting period, a pet owner could simply wait until their pet developed a medical condition and then enroll them in a pet insurance policy to have their expenses covered. While we desperately want all pets to have the best health care possible, this sort of practice would make it impossible for any pet insurance company to stay in business, which is why all pet insurance has some sort of waiting periods.

What is a Waiting Period in Pet Insurance?

A waiting period in pet insurance is a short period at the start of the policy when coverage for certain conditions or treatments is not yet active. Waiting periods help prevent fraud and vary depending on the type of coverage and the laws in your specific state. Once the waiting period ends, your coverage for those previously restricted conditions kicks in, and your beloved pet can enjoy the full benefits of the policy.

Is There Pet Insurance with No Waiting Periods?

If you’re searching for pet insurance with no waiting period, it’s important to know that all pet insurance companies have waiting periods to protect themselves. These waiting periods exist to ensure fairness and keep premiums reasonable for all pet owners. However, some policies might have shorter waiting periods than others, and we strive to keep ours as short as possible.

What are Embrace’s Waiting Periods?

All Embrace insurance policies have a 14-day waiting period for illnesses, while accident coverage starts on your policy's effective date, which you’ll receive when you sign up. Some states also have orthopedic waiting periods for specific conditions. These waiting periods or exclusion periods, can vary depending on your state. Click here to get the details, but as always check your specific Terms and Conditions for the final word.

Why It’s Important to Sign Up for Pet Insurance Right Away

Since all pet insurance companies have waiting periods, it’s crucial to sign up for coverage as soon as possible. By enrolling your furry family member in a policy right away, you’ll start the waiting period clock ticking, ensuring that your pet gets the protection they need sooner rather than later.

Nobody can predict when accidents or illnesses might strike, and securing pet insurance early means that you won’t be caught off guard, scrambling to find coverage when something unexpected happens. The sooner your pet is covered, the more peace of mind you’ll have knowing that you’re prepared to handle any unforeseen veterinary expenses.

Signing up early also helps reduce the risk of a condition being classified as a pre-existing condition , which can limit coverage options. No pet insurance company will cover pre-existing conditions, so it’s best to enroll before any health issues arise.

Getting Pet Insurance Even with Existing Health Issues

If your dog has a current health issue, you might wonder if pet insurance is still worth considering. It’s important to remember that, although the specific issue won’t be covered as a pre-existing condition, enrolling in pet insurance is still wise.

Securing a pet insurance policy ensures that, after the waiting period, your dog will be protected against future accidents, injuries, or unrelated conditions. By investing in pet insurance, you’ll not only gain financial support for veterinary expenses, but also the peace of mind knowing that future care will be covered.

In short, getting pet insurance, even with an existing health issue, can help safeguard your dog’s long-term well-being and assist in tackling any unexpected future medical concerns.

How the waiting period works with embrace.

Waiting periods start on your policy effective date. Then after your waiting period has passed, your coverage for those previously restricted conditions starts, and you’ll be able to make claims on those conditions.

What If I Make a Claim During the Waiting Period?

Unfortunately, if your pet has a health issue during the waiting period then your claim will not be covered, even if it was an unforeseeable emergency, and those new issues may be considered pre-existing conditions. So, make sure to get the protection of pet insurance before you need it!

Does pet insurance cover vet visits?

Most pet insurance policies cover accidents and emergencies, but you’ll need to find a wellness plan for routine care.

Frequently asked questions

👉 Before you dive into the article, be sure to familiarize yourself with the terms and verbiage used regularly when talking about pet insurance in our pet insurance glossary .

The essentials

  • No two pet insurance policies are the same — The terms of your plan can vary depending on several factors.
  • Traditional insurance won’t cover vet visits — Owners will need to find a wellness plan to help with the cost of routine care.
  • Pet wellness plans may not be available on their own — They’re usually purchased as an add-on to your pet’s current insurance.

Pet insurance comes in handy when your pet needs urgent medical attention. Unfortunately, vet visits are rarely covered under a standard insurance policy. Insurance providers have begun offering wellness plans, however, to help cover these routine vet costs.

What is a wellness plan?

Unlike traditional pet insurance, a wellness plan helps cover routine vet care. It’s designed to spread out the costs of preventative care over a year rather than paying a lump sum during your pet’s routine checkup. On top of that, wellness plans often come with a short waiting period and little to no deductible.

What routine care is covered under a wellness plan?

Wellness pet insurance plans cover expected veterinary costs and routine care, such as:

  • Exam fees.  Pets need at least one routine wellness exam per year. These usually run between $50 and $250 without wellness plan coverage.
  • Vaccination.  A round of core vaccines average around $100 each year out of pocket.
  • Dental cleanings — Dog teeth cleaning costs range from about $300 to $700 without coverage, while cat teeth cleanings cost $100 to $400.
  • Spay/neuter — You can expect to pay between $150 and $250 at a spay , neuter, and vaccine clinic. It’s even more expensive at private animal hospitals, and factors such as breed, size, age, and other medical conditions can affect the cost.
  • Microchip — A microchip can cost as little as $10 at some clinics, but the average cost is $30 to $45 per pet.
  • Heartworm testing + prevention — Heartworm tests cost $35–$75 each, and preventative heartworm tablets can another $6 to $18 a month.
  • Flea & tick prevention — A weekly flea dip or a monthly oral flea prevention pill combined with a tick collar costs between $40 and $150 per year.

While most insurers offer some sort of wellness coverage, some plans have more exclusions than others. Many providers also offer differing levels of coverage to better meet your budget and pet’s needs. The following pet insurance companies all offer comprehensive wellness plans:

  • Lemonade. Lemonade has three main wellness coverages. The Preventative Package covers your pet’s routine checkup, annual bloodwork, and more. The Preventative+ package comes with coverage for parasite prevention and routine dental cleaning. There’s also a Puppy/Kitten Preventative Package made for pets under two years old.
  • Embrace . Embrace offers a Wellness Rewards program that reimburses members for everyday veterinary, training, and grooming costs. This isn’t an insurance policy but rather works more like a budgeting tool for pet owners to give themselves a $250, $450, or $650 allowance per policy year.
  • ASPCA. ASPCA offers wellness plan add-ons to their standard pet insurance coverage for as little as $9.95 per month. Owners pay the bill out of pocket and submit a claim to receive reimbursement, much like a regular insurance policy.
  • Trupanion. Similar to the ASPCA program, Trupanion’s wellness package offers owners money back for common procedures.

Why should my pet have a wellness plan?

While pet insurance is important to have for injuries or illnesses, the cost of routine care can add up fast. A single vet trip usually runs from $125 to $500 without insurance. This could be even higher for those with puppies/kittens or elderly pets. Most add-on wellness plans only cost an additional $10 to $20 per month, and the extra coverage they offer can save you money in the long run.

7 Tips to Prepare for Your Pet’s First Vet Visit

7 Tips to Prepare for Your Pet’s First Vet Visit

The first visit to the vet can be nerve-wracking both for you and your pet. It’s only natural for them to be nervous. Your furry friend doesn’t understand the point of a veterinary visit. But you can ease this stress significantly by helping them prepare for that first vet visit. Taking care of your pet while they’re scared can become quite a task. Fortunately, we have six things you can do to get your pet ready and prepare for your first visit to the vet.

1. Help your pet adjust to the carrier

Presumably, you will be giving your pet a car ride to the vet. This means that they need to be comfortable on the way. You don’t want your cat to throw up before it even reaches the vet! It is necessary to get your pet acclimated to the pet carrier. Having trials at home can help. You can put your pet inside the carrier for a few minutes indoors to help them get used to it. That way, your pet will not be uncomfortable on the way to the vet visit.

Another thing you need to get the hang of is the placement of the pet carrier. For maximum stability, place the carrier securely on the floor of the backseat. Placing the carrier on the seat can risk tipping over or falling off. Don’t forget to keep a constant eye on your pet to check for signs of distress on the way!

2. Make a list of your pet’s unique behavioral patterns

Your pet very likely has specific unique behavioral patterns . It is often seen that pets exclusively communicate with their family or owners through body language . In such cases, it will be your duty to take note of these uniquely expressive behavioral patterns. They can signify aggression or anxiety. For instance, you would know best when and why your dog is feeling stressed or afraid. Also, these could be signs of distress from your pet. In any case, there are certain pet behaviors that you simply cannot ignore.

You should also make a list of any specific or chronic health conditions your pet has. This might be any skin disease, allergies, infections, etc.

Helping the veterinary team by passing on these behavioral and health signs can be a huge help. It will allow them to view your pet as a "known" patient, which means that their behavior and well-being become better understood by the veterinary team. It is a great way to ensure that your pet receives medical care sensitive to their behavior and needs. It also familiarizes the veterinary team with your pet's reception of strangers and medical care in general.

3. Use positive reinforcements during the drive and the vet visit

Much like you, your pet enjoys being praised! Gentle verbal reinforcements and affirmations can be a great way to ensure that your pet is at ease. It is extremely natural for pets to be high-strung and nervous when introduced to a new environment, where strangers handle them. That is why it is always a great prepping step to get the pet to listen to sounds or words that are otherwise calming to them. Instructions that they identify or comprehend can help them feel grounded.

4. Introduce your pet to being carefully handled

Making your pet feel comfortable at home is the best way to ease their fear of veterinarians. Having your dog remain calm while being handled will make everyone's lives easier. Examine your pet's teeth and run your fingers gently along his ribs once or twice a week to ease him into it. With increased familiarity, he is less likely to be stressed out when he sees the vet doing it as well.

5. Remain calm and collected during the visit

Animals can pick up on their owner’s feeling much better than fellow humans, and if you’re feeling anxious or stressed at the vet’s office, your dog or cat will notice. They’re like emotional sponges that soak up what humans feel around them and either mimic that behavior or become defensive in response. It can be a worry-inducing experience going to the vet, as you never know what you might learn, but you should try to stay calm and positive, so your pet will benefit too.

When you and your pet develop positive coping skills like those listed above, they will have a positive and safe experience at the veterinarian's office. Remember that taking your dog to the vet is not always a bad thing and that he may need some reassurance if he needs to go. Your dog will have a better attitude toward the vet if you prepare, tactfully and understand his needs.

6. Consider anti-anxiety treatments or medications if needed

When cats visit their vet, they often find the experience overwhelming. In the veterinary clinic, a cat is removed from its familiar surroundings, driven in a noisy car, and placed in an area where other animals and people are. Once they have been taken into the exam room, they will be examined by an unfamiliar person who will administer a variety of treatments. When all these things happen at once, it's no wonder that your cat is so frightened and stressed.

Vets prescribe anxiety medications based on a pet's weight and stress level while also considering other medications the pet may be on. The medications should be administered well before the appointment. Anxiety medications are not recommended for pets with signs of organ failure or diminished ability to metabolize medications.

7. Purchase pet insurance

Once you get a pet, getting them insured is one of the most crucial factors you should consider. Remember, your pet may fall ill and you could bear significant expenses for their checkups, vaccines, etc. Pet insurance covers different medical costs of your pet and helps you avoid the sudden financial burden in times of any medical emergency. Pet insurance policies cover the cost of a vet visit , thereby reducing your total expenditure. Pet-owners can select from a range of insurance policies that have different coverage. It would be best to go through the terms and conditions of each policy and make a choice accordingly.

Depending on your pet's health, you should decide what to do after the appointment. You may only need to schedule a follow-up appointment after a routine exam. The vet will tell you what signs to watch for and when to contact them if they have a health condition or have had an emergency. You will also learn how to administer any medications your pet requires. Be sure to schedule any follow-up appointments that are recommended.

7 Ways to Pay for Pet Care

O ur pets are often full of surprises! Some dogs might beg for blueberries and pass up peanut butter , while others might love to swim but refuse to walk in the rain. Then there are those cats who prefer to spend hours napping in a cardboard box while ignoring their expensive bed. But the biggest surprise of pet ownership might not be your pet’s quirky behaviors—it might be the vet bills.

Pet parents surveyed reported spending upward of $1,000 in one year on their cat or dog. Of the pet owners surveyed , 45 percent of dog owners and 38 percent of cat owners underestimate the lifetime cost of care. 1

“Veterinarians often see pet parents struggling to balance the care their pet needs with what they can afford,” says Don LeHoullier, DVM, owner of Countryside Veterinary Clinic in Jefferson, Oregon, and a veterinary expert for CareCredit Pet.

Wondering how to pay for vet bills? Pet parents want to provide the best care for their furry family members and will seek out solutions like grants, crowdfunding, and CareCredit , a health and pet care credit card that can be used for veterinary expenses.*

How much does a vet visit cost?

All pets need routine vet care. Puppies and kittens require wellness checks, vaccines, and spay or neuter surgeries; in adulthood, dogs and cats need annual exams and preventive care to maintain their health. Senior pets often need more specialized care, including semi-annual wellness checks to monitor for age-related diseases and treat chronic health conditions.

“As pets age, veterinarians may recommend more frequent examinations or even more diagnostic tests to determine if there are any underlying health concerns,” says Tom Dock, BSc, CVJ, public information officer for Noah’s Animal Hospitals in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Average annual veterinary costs are $1,391 for dogs and $1,149 for cats. The average cost of a routine vet checkup varies by region but starts at around $50. Vaccinations, bloodwork, urinalysis, or other tests will add to this cost.

What is the average cost of emergency pet care?

The adage “accidents happen” applies to pets too, and the cost of emergency vet care can add up. Four out of five pets have a medical emergency during their lifetime. 2 Here are the average costs for common pet emergencies and illnesses (according to the Pets Best Data Guide 2022):

How to Pay for Vet Bills: 7 Options to Consider

Unexpected expenses can cause serious stress for pet parents. The Pet Lifetime of Care report found that, for 1 out of 4 pet owners, an unexpected expense of $250 or less caused stress. 1

“Pet parents should always have a game plan ready for handling finances with their pets,” Dock says. “The fact that many people don’t have pet insurance and that pet parents are budgeting for their pet’s care after paying other bills means that the cost of that care is scrutinized very closely.”

The good news: Whether you are looking for ways to cover routine pet care or wondering how to pay for emergency pet care, these seven options can help with the cost crunch.

Savings accounts

Opening a savings account and making deposits on a regular basis will help ensure you have some funds available to cover vet care. You can open an account with your bank, or Dr. LeHoullier notes that some vet practices also offer dedicated savings accounts.

“This can be a great solve,” he says. “It enables pet owners to earmark funds that aren’t attached to specific services and can be used toward anything, including preventative care, medical services, and medications.”

But there is a downfall, according to Dock. You may not have saved enough money to cover emergencies. Using savings combined with other payment options can help cover the gaps.

Pet insurance

Pet insurance offers help with vet bills. Pet parents purchase policies, pay monthly or annual premiums, and submit claims to receive reimbursement for covered conditions.

Dock believes that pet insurance can be a “life saver” for pets but warns that pet parents need to read the fine print because certain hereditary conditions may not be covered and, in some cases, there are lifetime limits to reimbursement payments. It’s also important to remember that pet insurance policies are often reimbursable.

“You’ll still need to pay the veterinarian and then you submit the claim for reimbursement,” he adds.

You can also look for pet insurance that pays the vet directly.

Financing options

The CareCredit credit card offers flexible financing options. Pet parents can use CareCredit to cover routine vet care, from annual wellness exams and dental cleanings to emergency services and surgical procedures.

The CareCredit card is accepted at more than 25,000 veterinary hospital locations nationwide. Dock suggests pairing it with pet insurance: You can pay for vet care with the CareCredit card, submit the receipts to the insurance company for reimbursement, and use the funds to pay the balance on your CareCredit account.

Payment plans

When your pet needs vet care and you don’t have the funds to cover it, some veterinary clinics may allow you to make multiple smaller payments to pay down the balance over time.

“This can be helpful, as many clinics don’t charge a high interest rate or they might be willing to hold onto a payment for a period of time,” Dock says. “But it’s all based on the relationship that the pet parent has with their veterinarian.”

In other words, your longtime provider may allow you to carry a balance and make payments, but it may not be an option if you’re a new client or seeing a vet for the first time.

Friends and family

In an urgent situation, friends and family may be able to help cover the cost of care for your four-legged friend. Dock calls it an “often forgotten method for getting help” and cites the lack of an application and formal approval process as the biggest advantages to asking loved ones for a loan.

Of course, this method of paying for pet care only works if your friends and family have cash to spare.

Crowdsourcing

Platforms like GoFundMe, Waggle, CoFund my Pet, and other crowdsourcing sites are filled with fundraising campaigns started by pet parents and can provide financial help for vet bills.

“Most pet parents tend to resort to crowdfunding for more extreme circumstances or illnesses, not routine care,” Dr. LeHoullier says. “Crowdfunding…can’t be overlooked as a way to pay for veterinary expenses that are outside the pet parent’s budget.”

You can ask your network to contribute and share, and you may receive donations from kind strangers who want to help, which Dock explains, “shifts the cost burden away from the pet parent.”

Charities and rescue organizations

There are some charities that help pay vet bills by providing grants to pet parents in need of financial assistance.

“When a pet parent qualifies for a grant from a pet-related charity or rescue group, the biggest advantage is that there is no expectation of repayment,” Dock says.

Contact local rescue groups and shelters to ask about grants to help with vet bills; the grant process often requires a short application. You could receive a grant to cover a portion (or all) of the treatment.

The myriad options pet parents have when it comes to covering the cost of vet care makes it easier to prioritize routine care and seek treatment for unexpected illnesses and injuries. Rather than picking one option, Dock suggests mixing and matching a few different payment plans.

“It’s always good to be prepared,” he says. “Each family needs to look at their own budgeting situation as well as their credit history to make these kinds of decisions.”
