Crappie Fishing is Fantastic at Reelfoot Lake

Learn the fishing techniques you should use to catch crappie in Tennessee.

The crappie fishing is phenomenal at Reelfoot Lake in Tiptonville , Tennessee. Bill Dance , famous Tennessee fisherman, shares techniques, baits and locations to scout for a memorable fishing trip.

Reelfoot Lake

Historians claim Reelfoot Lake was created in the early 1800s by a series of earthquakes which opened crevices in the earth so deep that the Mississippi River flowed backward to fill them up. Centuries later, the result of the rumbling destruction is a pristine, cypress tree-laden, five-mile lake that is the crown jewel of Northwest Tennessee .

Crappie Fishing Technique

Anglers will want to use the spider-rigging technique to catch lots of crappie. This is basically trolling with several poles spread out and held in a rack, typically from the boat’s bow. From above, with poles extended, the boat would resemble a spider walking across the surface; thus, the name. The tactic allows anglers to have many hooks in the water, all maintained at consistent depths while passing over the lake’s sunken cypress forest. Though in many places, above the surface, Reelfoot Lake may look like open water, but there are loads of stumps, logs and other features that crappie love. 

Consistency is the key when spider rigging, you want to keep all your baits at the same depth as you troll above submerged structure. Deep is a relative term at Reelfoot. This is not a man-made reservoir, so there are no tremendous depths to be found in much of the lake. This helps anglers better locate the fish. So, use your electronics to find schooling fish and simply present your baits at the level they’re holding. Most often this will also be at or slightly above submerged structures.

Typically, spider-rig anglers have two-hook rigs on each pole. A crappie jig tipped with a minnow is the favorite of most. All the traditional crappie jig colors work, but you may want to experiment with different colors on top and bottom hooks to see if you can fine-tune the crappies’ preference.

This is a popular lake. It draws anglers from all over the country, and you will not be alone in the expanses of open water, but there is plenty of room, and even more important, plenty of fish. Because of the lake’s popularity, it’s not difficult to find public ramps providing easy access to the lake.

There are many outfitters in the area ready to help you catch some crappie as well. Bill Dance recommends life-long resident and fishing guide Jackie Van Cleave . He is familiar with spider-rigging in the open waters of Reelfoot Lake, and has even competed professionally on the crappie tournament circuit.

Fishing for Bass 

Bass fishing at Reelfoot Lake can also be fantastic, too. In summer, anglers often fish pad fields and cypress. Topwater baits among the pads can be great, as can plastic worms and lizards at greater depths.

Fishing for Catfish 

Fishing for catfish is always a good option with all traditional cat baits. But it’s the bluegill that most often takes center spotlight in summer at Reelfoot. Crickets and worms work on light tackle. A local preference is to fish a small hair or feather jig tipped with a waxworm or piece of a red wiggler.

If while fishing for crappie, you find the winds are too high to spider-rig, go after the big bluegills. You can then get out of the wind in one of the lake’s many pockets, or among the standing cypress. All the traditional panfishing methods and baits work, and you can catch a lot of Reelfoot bluegill in a hurry if you locate spawning beds.

Reelfoot Lake is a true natural wonder. It’s where bald eagles soar, and the fish are plentiful. It’s always a great place to fish in Tennessee . So, whether you’re a Tennessee resident or visitor, make sure to plan a trip , and get there as soon as you can for great crappie fishing.

Reelfoot NWR is well-known for nature photography and birding. However, there are several ways to enjoy the refuge. You can explore the exhibit area at the visitor center, where you will be greeted with a smile and given information by resident volunteers. You may drive the 3.5-mile auto tour route, hike in the bottomland hardwood forest, and enjoy beautiful views from several viewing towers. If you have a kayak/canoe, you can glide across the still waters of Reelfoot on our established canoe trails.     

Location and Contact Information

Reelfoot National Wildlife Refuge is located on the northern portion of Reelfoot Lake, which lies within the northwest corner of Tennessee and southwest corner of Kentucky. The Refuge was established in 1941 under the terms of a lease and cooperative agreement with the State of Tennessee. Additional land purchases extended the Refuge into Kentucky to its present 10,428 acres. 

The Refuge and surrounding lake provide major wintering, migrating, and production areas for waterfowl in the southeast. The refuge practices several different types of management techniques to provide optimum habitat for wintering waterfowl. Reelfoot Lake has also long been known for its large wintering population of bald eagles providing excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. In addition, the refuge offers interpretive, educational, and wildlife recreation opportunities for the visiting public

Our Species

Reelfoot National Wildlife Refuge was specifically authorized for use as an inviolate sanctuary for migratory birds, and the refuge does just that by providing important habitat to over 283 species of birds including the endangered Least Tern. The refuge is also home to variety of mammals, from the large white-tailed deer to the busy squirrel. Many reptiles and amphibians can be seen, including the eastern box turtle which is Tennessee's state reptile. White crappie are one of the fish that is highly sought after while fishing at Reelfoot Lake.

Visit Reelfoot Lake

This area has long been a mecca for hunters, birdwatchers and outdoor water sports enthusiasts because of nearby Reelfoot Lake.

Reelfoot Lake State Park is located in the northwest corner of Tennessee and is noted for its fishing, boating and wildlife viewing. The 15,000 acre lake was created by a series of violent earthquakes in 1811-1812 that caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards for a short period of time.

The park’s ecosystem is unlike any other place in Tennessee. Reelfoot Lake is a flooded forest. While Cypress trees rise above the water, below the surface are many submerged Cypress stumps. A variety of aquatic plants and flowers occupy the shoreline and saturate the shallow water. The lake harbors almost every kind of shore and wading birds as well as golden and American bald eagles.

There are few large boats on the lake which makes it a nice place for canoes, kayaks and jon boats when the winds are calm. Boats may be rented from local private businesses. The park has five public boat launch ramps to accommodate fishing boats and small pontoon boats. The park offers a variety of canoe and pontoon boat tours throughout the year.

Fishing is productive by boat, from the bank, pier and boardwalk. A special lake permit is required. Fish cleaning stations are located throughout the park and many guides are available locally. Bait, tackle, snacks and fishing licenses are for sale at nearby locations.

While Reelfoot Lake is known for its eagles and Eagle Festival, White Pelicans also make the park home during their annual fall migration. A variety of other birds can be seen from the visitor center, including prothonotary warblers, double-crested cormorants, wood ducks and various wading birds. South Campground: The campground is located on Tennessee Highway 21-22, on the south end of Reelfoot Lake. There are 86 RV and tent campsites. Two bathhouses have hot showers and one has a washer, dryer and dish washing area. There is a dump station located at the entrance.

Airpark North Campground: There are 14 RV campsites (up to 35 feet) with 30-amp electrical hookups and water hookups. There are also 10 primitive tent only campsites. A dump station and a bathhouse with hot showers and heat are nearby.

The park has seven cabins that offer first-class comfort and modern convenience on the shoreline of Reelfoot Lake. All cabins have spacious living, dining and kitchen areas and a choice of two or three bedrooms. Cabins accommodate six to eight people depending on the design. Amenities include two full bathrooms, full size kitchen, dishwasher, central heat and air, an electric fireplace, outdoor charcoal grills and patios. All cabins have lakeside views and are pet-friendly. The cabins are also equipped with cable TV and WiFi service.

Cabins are available by reservation year-round with a two-night minimum (holidays and other special events may require longer minimum stays) and can be reserved up to a year in advance online with reservations being made through the park office up to two years in advance. Check-out time is 10:00 AM. Pets are only permitted in pet-friendly cabins. Two ADA cabins are available and should be requested when reservations are made.

Ellington Auditorium is ideal for banquets, reunions and meetings. The 3,700-square-foot, air conditioned hall with kitchen facilities can seat approximately 400 people theatre-style or 240 people banquet-style. Reelfoot Lake State Park has a total of five picnic shelters/pavilions that may be reserved for your next event or gathering. Depending on the shelter, the maximum capacity ranges from 40 to 90 people. The shelters are equipped with picnic tables and a grill. Most of them have restrooms. Full day shelter reservations may be made online or by calling the park.

Picnic shelters or pavilions may be reserved up to one year in advance with a paid reservation fee. There is a $5 cancellation fee for picnic shelter or pavilion reservations cancelled eight days or more in advance of the reserved date. Reservations cancelled seven days or less in advance of the reserved date forfeit all paid fees.
