The US has close to 3.8 million sq miles (10 million sq km) of sublime mountain ranges, parched desert, entire states engulfed in deep snow, you-gotta-go-see-it-to-believe-it cities, endless prairie land, six whole time zones and lakes so large you could lose whole countries down there. So while traveling around by plane might make sense from a convenience point of view – it’s not quite six hours to dart directly from New York to LA – there really is no better way to experience the sheer grandeur of the country than by taking one of these train vacations.

Amtrak's Sunset Limited is the ultimate American railroad ride and one of its most famous train journeys: east to west, coast to coast, clean through from the bars of New Orleans to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. If you’ve always dreamed of taking a journey across the USA, but don’t much relish the prospect of two weeks spent cooped up in an automobile, then a ride on the Sunset Limited is the answer.

Sit back and let America’s landscapes buzz by: from Louisiana ’s bayous, past the high-rises of Houston , across the deserts of Texas and Arizona , over the Californian hills all the way to LA’s golden beaches. Saddle up, pardner: it’s gonna be quite a ride.

2. The Coast Starlight

Route: Seattle – Portland – Sacramento – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1377 miles (2216 km); 35 hours

Trace America’s “left coast” in all its varied splendor. The 35-hour (OK, it’s Amtrak, so maybe more) trip between Seattle and Los Angeles curves alongside crashing Pacific waves, cuts through America’s lushest agricultural land and passes below snowcapped mountains and towering redwoods. Of all the Amtrak routes, the Coast Starlight offers the most scenic variety in the fewest hours.

It’s also the only Amtrak service with a dedicated parlor car, open only to passengers who book sleepers. The parlor conjures old-time rail romance, with wood paneling and soft lighting, plus a special menu and wine-and-cheese tastings. Highlights of this train ride include dramatic sunrise perspectives on 14,179ft (4322m)  Mt Shasta , and a gorgeous midday traverse of Oregon's Cascade Range.

3. Metro-North Hudson Line

Route: New York City – Poughkeepsie Distance and duration: 69 miles (111 km); 1½ hours

Depart from New York City ’s iconic beaux arts Grand Central Terminal , stopping to admire the ornate astronomical ceiling painting in the vaulted main concourse and to slurp up oysters and a martini at the famous Oyster Bar.

Then roll through Manhattan and the Bronx and into the glorious green Hudson River Valley. Hugging the eastern banks of the river, New York’s Metro-North's Hudson line travels deep into American history. This classic three-day journey travels nearly 2500 miles (4000km) across prairies, deserts, the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada on its way from Chicago to San Francisco. The scenery is magnificent throughout – especially when seen through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the lounge car – but if you can only do one section, opt for the riveting 185-mile (298km) stretch between Denver and Glenwood Springs, where the train travels through an often roadless wilderness of deep, narrow gorges near the Colorado River’s headwaters.

Near sunset, the train emerges into the majestic red rock desert of eastern Utah , then crosses overnight into the forbidding vastness of Nevada's sagebrush country, with salt flats and stark, arid mountains as far as the eye can see. Sunrise on day three reveals an entirely different desert: the blinding-white alkali flats and ghostly grey mountains near Winnemucca, Nevada. Just beyond the gambling-happy little city of Reno, the Zephyr climbs into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, then enters California’s imposing granite high country beyond the photogenic frontier town of Truckee.

5. Amtrak Downeaster

Route: Boston – Portland – Brunswick Distance and duration: 145 miles (233 km); 3 hours 25 minutes

As car-free city breaks go, this train escape is hard to beat, chugging from the downtown main streets of urban Boston to Maine ’s rural greens in under four hours. That’s from the seventh most densely populated city in the US to the state with the highest percentage of forest coverage, all in less time than it takes to cook an old-style Yankee plum pudding.

This ride through the Pacific Northwest connects 18 cities along the I-5 and lets you witness breathtaking views of Puget Sound, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Columbia River, and evergreen forests in between.

It travels from Vancouver, BC, Canada and ends in Eugene, Oregon. It passes Seattle and Tacoma in Washington, and Portland and Salem in Oregon.

The Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 brought about the construction of the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway in 1899.

11. Mount Washington Cog Railway through New England

Starting from the Marshfield Base Station in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, the Mount Washington Cog Railway (affectionately called “The Cog”) climbs around 3,500 feet up to the highest summit in New England.

As you can probably surmise, this is the steepest rack railway in the USA, and second in the world. So again, if you have a fear of heights, this might not be for you.

A one-hour stopover at the summit gives you breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys of New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and Canada, as well as the Atlantic Ocean from the Mount Washington Observatory.

You can also browse the museum and gift shops, as well as send yourself and your loved ones a postcard from their post office.

Though there’s only one way up (and down), you can choose between riding a biodiesel or a steam locomotive.

12. Arkansas & Missouri Railroad through The Ozarks

The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad runs 139 miles from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Monett, Missouri.

The A&M runs mostly freight cars, but offers round-trip scenic tours through the Ozark Boston Mountains. Travel high trestles over 125 feet from the ground.

The Springdale to Van Buren route is a whole-day affair, taking you through the Boston Mountain range of the Ozarks with spectacular forest views all around and stopping at the historic town of Van Buren for three hours.

The Van Buren to Winslow route takes you over streams, wildlife, and trestles overlooking lush forests. Go through the 1700-foot long Winslow tunnel for more breathtaking scenery.

If you’re purely going for the fall foliage and the Winslow tunnel, skip van Buren entirely and ride the Springdale to Winslow route.

For nearly 200 years, railroads have ferried passengers and freight all across the United States, transforming them from just a practical form of transportation to the pinnacle of luxury for wealthy Americans by the turn of the 20th century. But when jetliners hit the scene , rail travel languished.

These days, slow travel is making a comeback, with travelers delighting in the romantic nostalgia of elegantly furnished train cars complemented by fine dining. And while the U.S. has been, admittedly, rather slow to reclaim luxury train travel — particularly compared to the rest of the world — there are a growing number of elegant rail experiences to be found across the country. Here are five of the best experiences for luxury train travel in the U.S.

Rocky Mountaineer

In August 2021, Canadian railway company Rocky Mountaineer debuted its first-ever U.S. route, Rockies to Red Rocks . It's a long-in-the-making two-day journey between Denver and Moab, Utah, which includes an overnight stay in Glenwood Springs, Colorado . The glass-domed cars offer passengers exceptional views of the mountains, canyons, rivers, and hoodoos along the journey. Passengers enjoy multi-course meals, either in their seats or in a designated dining room, depending on ticket class. For those who book the higher class of service, SilverLeaf Plus , there's a lounge car with a bar and an exclusive outdoor observation deck.

The Grand Canyon Railway

The Grand Canyon is a must-visit destination, so why not arrive in style? Instead of sitting in traffic to enter the national park, take the Grand Canyon Railway for a leisurely adventure. The train departs from the depot in Williams, Arizona, some 60 miles south of the canyon itself, then travels for two-and-a-half hours through the desert to reach Grand Canyon Village, right next to the South Rim. For the most luxurious experience, be sure to book the Luxury Parlor or Luxury Dome class of service — the adults-only cars have private bars and open-air platforms.

Napa Valley Wine Train

Since 1864, the Napa Valley Wine Train has been carrying oenophiles through the eponymous California wine region . Though it originally traveled between Vallejo and Calistoga, the train now makes a three-hour, round-trip journey between downtown Napa and St. Helena. There are a few different itineraries ; most include a multi-course gourmet meal served in sophisticated historic railway cars, and some rides include stops and tastings at various wineries. The most popular car on the train is the Vista Dome , a Pullman from 1952, where you'll dine in a glass-domed car with nearly uninterrupted vineyard views.

Alaska Railroad

Connecting Seward and Fairbanks via 470 miles of track, the Alaska Railroad provides scenic excursions through the state . Book the GoldStar Service for a more upscale experience — it's offered onboard the Denali Star train, a 12-hour itinerary connecting Anchorage and Fairbanks, and the Coastal Classic Train, which connects Anchorage and Seward. The service provides guests with spacious seats in a domed car, access to an outdoor viewing platform, meals in the dining car, and access to a private bar.

Strasburg Railroad

A ride on Pennsylvania's Strasburg Railroad might not be long — each journey lasts only 45 minutes. The railroad itself, however, has a long history. In fact, it's the oldest continuously operating railroad in the country, founded in 1832. For a luxurious little joy ride, book one of the historic first-class cars , which includes Marian (the private-hire President's Car); the Parlor Car, which has tables and sofas; or one of the two Lounge Cars, which are outfitted with velvet-upholstered captain's chairs. Snacks and beverages are available during each ride, but there's also a special wine-and-cheese experience for adults on select Friday and Saturday evenings.

Taking the train can be a wonderful way to sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery. Railways can also be a way to connect with another era, too.  Across the country, there are a variety of rail journeys you can take—some provide a blast from the past and historical context while others offer an opportunity to experience travel in another way long before cars were such a fundamental part of our lives. Sometimes the best part about a train adventure is getting off the beaten path and being able to see a place in another way. Hop on the restored Grand Canyon Railway , which replicates the important journey from the town of Williams to the Grand Canyon. Travelers board at the Williams Depot and experience 65 miles of beautiful desert terrain, traveling from prairie to pine with an abundance of photo opportunities with different views. The voyage ends in the middle of the National Park in the historical Grand Canyon Depot.

White Pass and Yukon Route Railway, Skagway, Alaska

Travel length: 2.5 hours

The historic narrow-gauge White Pass and Yukon Route Railway in Skagway, Alaska is an incredible feat of engineering. The first tracks were built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush and you may wonder how they managed to build along sheer cliffs. Chugging along this route reaches almost 3,000 feet in elevation offering vistas of waterfalls, lakes and snow-covered mountains, gorges, and glaciers and traveling through several tunnels. There are three distinct excursions to choose from, all departing from Skagway.

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, Bryson City, North Carolina

Trip length: 4-4.5 hours 

For anyone who wants to experience the Great Smoky Mountains, taking the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is one of the most delightful and easy ways to see this mountain range. There are two different trips you can take. One is a 32-mile Tuckasegee River excursion that is more centered on the history where passengers will see fertile verdant valleys and many important bridges or opt for the 44-mile Nantahala Gorge Excursion offering vistas of the Nantahala and Tennessee Rivers that leads to the gorge and is more focused on nature.  

Amtrak’s Adirondack, New York City, NY to Montreal, Canada

Trip Length: 10 hours

With daily departures leaving New York City’s Penn Station in the early morning, hopping aboard Amtrak’s Adirondack route will bring you to Montreal just in time for dinner. You’ll have vistas of the Hudson River with plenty of well-kept mansions along the riverbank, vineyards, forests, as well as quaint towns. Spend time in the observation car for better views, especially when you’re near the Adirondack mountains.

Alaska Denali Star, Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alaska

Trip length: 12 hours

During the summer, the Alaska Railroad ferries passengers from Anchorage to Fairbanks daily on this 356 mile track. Travel from one city to the other on a scenic and relaxing passage while you take in Alaska’s Southcentral and Interior landscape. This journey is a popular way to reach Denali National Park, too. On a clear day, you’ll want to spend more time in the observation deck to take in the backcountry, the Indian River and vistas from a 296-foot bridge of Hurricane Gulch.

Coastal Starlight, Los Angeles, California to Seattle, Washington

Trip length: 35 hours

The Coastal Starlight is an opportunity to enjoy the West Coast in all its splendor from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest. Departing from Los Angeles three days a week, the route offers travelers an opportunity to see incredible views of the Pacific coast that are often only available aboard as it passes through Santa Barbara, the Central Coast, and whisks past the San Francisco Bay Area as it continues north through beautiful forests, valleys and the snow-capped Cascade Mountains before arriving in Seattle. 

Empire Builder, Chicago, Illinois to Seattle, Washington

Trip length: 46 hours 

This scenic train ride departs three times a week from Chicago. Chugging alongside the Mississippi River and jagged mountain ranges, there are plenty of photo opportunities as you glide by Glacier National Park in Montana. Once you reach the Pacific Northwest, this ride passes along sections of Lewis and Clark’s expedition before arriving at its final destination—Portland. California Zephyr, Chicago, Illinois to Emeryville, California

The route begins in Chicago and ends in the San Francisco Bay Area in the city of Emeryville, California. Maybe it won’t happen exactly that way, but a ride on a train focused on delivering luxury is a special thing indeed. 1.  Rocky Mountaineer | The Canadian Rockies and beyond

This is swoon-worthy stuff. The Rocky Mountaineer goes through some of the most spectacular landscape there is, and you can see it all through the glass dome coaches with oversized windows. You’ll be fed locally-inspired cuisine at your seat or go to a gourmet à la carte meal in the dining car, depending on whether you choose gold or silver leaf service. Storytelling hosts narrate the history of the scenery and wildlife you’ll be seeing. All three routes—connecting Vancouver, British Columbia to the mountain towns of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper in the Canadian Rockies —are only daylight trains to maximize the views, but you can arrange a hotel stay to keep the fun going.

2.  Hickory Creek Car | between New York City and Albany, NY

This is a car, not a full train: the rearmost car on the 20th Century Limited train . It has a “lookout lounge” with big picture windows to look out onto the Hudson River, four bedrooms and four bathrooms, lounge seating for 16 and dinner seating for eight. There’s an onboard kitchen where a chef prepares a four-course meal for you. Staff hovers throughout the trip to serve your every need (or most of them, anyway). This 20th Century Limited is a sleek, silver, mid-Modern from 1948 and traverses the rails originally traveled by the line from 1902 to 1967.

3.  The Bourbon Excursion | Bardstown, KY

Take a 2.5-hour excursion on My Old Kentucky Dinner Train while you go through 32 miles of beautiful Kentucky countryside on a buzzed round trip, fueled by tasting local bourbons—Bardstown itself is home to more than 11 bourbon distilleries. The ride also includes a four-course gourmet meal and some fun souvenirs. Your ride embarks on a restored 1940s dining car pulled by a 1950s diesel locomotive. You must be 21+ to ride (duh), but if you want to try an excursion open to the general public, the train also has lunch and dinner rides, a murder mystery ride, and the seasonal North Pole Express.

4.  Napa Valley Wine Train | Napa, CA

You’ll want to dress up a little for this excursion into Napa's wine country with gourmet meals and tastings on the train. The experiences change, but right now, the Legacy Experience includes a day on the rails winding past the vineyards and enjoying a four-course wine country-inspired meal, three tastings, and spectacular photo ops at each stop. The experience is six hours, three of which are on the train. You’re welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine and a one-hour vineyard tasting of three wines right at the Napa Valley Welcome sign, and train your way towards two hours of tasting at Charles Krug and V. Sattui.

5.  First Class Car on the Strasburg Railroad | Strasburg, PA

Go luxe for 45 minutes in the exquisite President’s Car with wood paneled interior and built-in furnishings (it’s currently off the rails for renovation, but check the website for its glorious return)—or there are four other first-class options to pick from. One is the parlor car, where you lounge on cabernet-colored sofas and order confections and beverages for purchase in the last car in line with a view of the vanishing rails behind you. Or choose two separate lounge cars with plush captain’s chairs that swivel to catch the views, or the club car, which is a private charter experience if you have a group to travel with. Here in Dutch country, the railroad is the oldest continuously operating railroad in North America, dating to 1832.

6.  First Class Caboose on the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad | Yosemite, CA

The  Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad offers a classic steam train excursion through the Sierra National Forest—and if you want to go luxe, you can upgrade your ticket to the First Class Caboose, available on any train. This ride includes a renovated wood-paneled interior with wrought iron seats holding padded upholstery, and if you can climb the narrow, interior stairs to the cupola, the cute aerie has two seats facing each other (the main part of the caboose is ADA accessible). There’s even a personal conductor to describe the gorgeous things you’re seeing, plus a drink and snacks included. Best part? The traditional whistle blow emerging from this Shay steam engine.

7.  GoldStar Service on the Denali Star | Between Anchorage and Fairbanks, AK

The Alaska Railroad seats may not be that fancy, but the views are spectacular. The premium GoldStar Service class includes a chance to glide through Alaska’s incredible scenery viewed through the glass-dome ceilinged car. You can also walk around to visit an upper-level viewing platform or the full-service dining room, but if you choose to just stay seated, your glass will be filled by a dedicated bar attendant. Not all train rides include GoldStar service, so check the website before booking—but we’d argue that the railroad’s Adventure Class is just as fun.

8.  Acela train | between Boston and Washington, D.C.

Although Amtrak is more known for serviceable rides (all the luxury is found in the view out the window!), there is a first-class cabin on the Acela train—and it just received a refreshed menu in May. In collaboration with the STARR Restaurant Group and its James Beard-winning leader, Stephen Starr, Amtrak is offering a rotation of signature dishes as well as an upgraded wine list. The updated Acela fleet, launching in 2024, will feature more environmentally sustainable high-speed trains with a new, modern look.

9.  Luxury Dome on the Grand Canyon Railway | Williams, AZ

In these opulent parlor cars , you’ll see amazing views out of the Observation Dome with its gigantic windows to capture the grandeur of the Grand Canyon. Kids under 15 aren’t allowed, so the ride is engineered to be a little more sophisticated; your sparkling wine toast is included in the ticket price. The two-story train has a downstairs lounge with a full bar, entertainment center and plush furnishings. Besides the luxury dome class, there’s also a luxury parlor class at the same price point, including a private bar and access to the outdoor platform.

From catching the northern lights from the comfort of your carriage to watching zebras trotting through green pastures, these train journeys are for those who wish to savor the world while crossing items off their bucket lists.

Aurora Winter Train, Alaska, USA

From mid-September to early May, aurora chasers have the chance to spot the northern lights from the comforts of this 12-hour rail expedition , while also taking in the snow-covered landscape of Alaska , dotted with moose and other wildlife. This 351-mile track runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks , also stopping at Denali National Park & Preserve . Travelers can also disembark at a few stops for activities such as snowmobiling and dog sledding. Alaska Railroad offers several winter packages varying in days and experiences.

The Jacobite Steam Train, Scotland

This one’s for every Harry Potter fan awaiting that coveted letter. A highlight of West Coast Railways ' 84-mile round-trip journey is the stretch that crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct and its 21 striking arches and towering columns—the same bridge the Hogwarts Express runs over. Starting from Fort William near Britain’s highest mountain (Ben Nevis) and running till Mallaig on the West Coast, the track cuts through stunning valleys, past lochs, quaint villages, and the picturesque scenery that the Scottish Highlands are known for. The train is operated between April and October.

The Belmond Andean Explorer, Peru

Cross off the Peruvian Andes (and Machu Picchu) off your bucket list, without undertaking a trek. At 14,000 feet, the Belmond Andean Explorer traverses through some of the world’s highest tracks between Puno, on the shores of the historic Lake Titicaca, to Cusco on a one- or two-night journey. The train—the first luxury sleeper in South America—features an open-deck Observation Car that’s perfect for passengers to enjoy mesmerizing views as they savor a Pisco sour. Pro tip: Book a spot on the Hiram Bingham , A Belmond Train that takes you from Cusco through the Sacred Valley up to the entrance of Machu Picchu .

Glacier Express, Switzerland

For a front-row seat to a view of the Swiss Alps , opt for the Glacier Express . Along this journey—which starts near the Matterhorn in Zermatt and concludes in the resort town of St Moritz—travelers can soak in breathtaking views through the panoramic windows. The Glacier Express offers one of the most dramatic views of the Rhine Gorge, crossing rocky mountains past the Upper Rhone Valley and the Oberalp Pass (the highest point of the trip at 7,000 feet), and elegant villages and scenic streams along the way. On this train, there’s an Excellence Class that comes with a multi-course meal, local wines, and a special seating area. One of the most beautiful ways to explore New Zealand , KiwiRail’s TranzAlpine rightfully deems this 11-hour, round-trip, coast-to-coast route between Christchurch and Greymouth as one of their Great Journeys . Expansive stretches of farmland dotted with sheep and cattle, deep gorges and steel bridges, views of waterfalls and one of New Zealand’s longest tunnels await travelers on this spectacular ride, which cuts through the mountains that partition New Zealand’s South Island. Panoramic windows, skylight, and reclining seats make it a trip to remember.

Rocky Mountaineer, Canada and USA

Rocky Mountaineer takes you through cascading waterfalls, dramatic canyons, glacial lakes, plunging gorges, and roaring rivers—good thing the sizable windows in the carriages extend from the passenger seat to the roof. There are also the luxurious GoldLeaf service cars equipped with dome windows and a large platform to enjoy unobstructed views of the outdoors, between April and October. Starting either in the Rockies in Jasper National Park or Vancouver, the train connects the west to the east in Canada. In the US, it travels between Moab in Utah and Denver in Colorado, with options to start/end in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City , as well. All packages include luxury hotel stays as there’s no sleeping accommodation aboard the train.

The Ghan, Australia

The longest passenger train in the world, The Ghan runs through Australia's Red Centre on a three-day, all-inclusive package. Travel 1,737 miles from Darwin in the north to Adelaide in the south (or vice versa), soaking in sights from the otherworldly Outback. Passengers can enjoy several off-train experiences en route, such as guided camel tours, helicopter rides, and trips to the Cutta Cutta Caves and Katherine Gorge. They can also mold the itinerary to their liking, by opting for a smaller section of The Ghan from Darwin or Adelaide and disembarking in Alice Springs, or even extending the trip by adding excursions and hotel stays to the travel menu. Travelers can also opt for the Indian Pacific , another cross-country trip that takes you from Perth to Sydney and is run by the same company.

The Eastern & Oriental Express, Southeast Asia

Operating between Bangkok and Singapore , the E&O is Asia’s answer to the Orient Express . The train is finally resuming operations in February 2024 following a pandemic-induced hiatus. The open observation car and vintage décor of the cabins make the journey a unique experience. The train meanders through the rice paddies and jungles of Malaysia, over the legendary River Kwai in Thailand, passing by hilltop pagodas. Off-train experiences include snorkeling in Langkawi and excursions to Taman Negara National Park. The Eastern & Oriental runs all year round, taking four nights and three days one way, and two nights and three full days in the opposite direction. Guests can also opt for a short Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur trip aboard the E&O.

This journey combines the romance of slow travel with the marvels of an African safari . California Zephyr, Chicago, Illinois to San Francisco, California

Often dubbed the ultimate cross-country rail trip by enthusiasts, this epic 2,438-mile (3,924km), 51-hour journey between Chicago and San Francisco is undeniably breathtaking. From the majestic mountain ranges of the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada to the bright-red hues of Utah’s deserts and the seemingly endless plains of Nebraska, expect fabulous scenery from start to finish. 

What’s more, there are plenty of options to experience it. Coach seats start at around $142 for the full trip – you’ll have to make do with a reclining seat for this price – while roomettes start at around $680 (although prices vary depending when you’re traveling and how many people there are). Travelers in private rooms also have access to flexible dining that includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and a wide selection of drinks. Trains usually depart daily, but check the website for updates.

Rocky Mountaineer, Denver, Colorado to Moab, Utah

Launched in August 2021, the Rocky Mountaineer’s exciting new route takes passengers on a two-day excursion between Denver, Colorado and Moab, Utah, including an overnight stay in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The Rockies to the Red Rocks journey is an extravagant one and doesn’t come cheap, starting at $1,395 for a one-way trip. All packages include gourmet meals, access to opulent lounge carriages and accommodation in Moab, Glenwood Springs and Denver.

While it would be easy to focus on all the luxuries found inside, the real highlight of this journey is the incredible landscapes to be found outside – which include Ruby Canyon, Mount Logan and Mount Garfield. To maximize the views, the train only runs during the day and features oversized windows and glass-domed coaches. There are also options to start or end in Salt Lake City or Las Vegas if you’d like a little time to explore these destinations.

City of New Orleans, Chicago, Illinois to New Orleans, Louisiana

Amtrak’s City of New Orleans  is a popular choice for those wishing to explore the rich history and culture of Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans. Trains typically leave the Windy City at 8pm, trundling through Illinois and Kentucky by night and gliding into Tennessee as the sun rises. Be sure to stop off in Memphis to wander through the homeland of blues, rock n’ roll and soul music, as well as paying a visit to Elvis’ former home.

The Canadian, Vancouver to Jasper, Canada

VIA Rail’s overnight service between Vancouver and Jasper certainly doesn't scrimp on impressive scenery. What’s more, it’s a fraction of the price of the famous Rocky Mountaineer service. The 19-hour trip starts at reasonable C$156 (US$122) per passenger for a reclining seat in Economy, or C$527 (US$413) for a two-person cabin in Sleeper Class.

Trains depart Vancouver at 3pm each day, gliding away from the city’s gleaming skyscrapers and towards British Columbia’s breathtaking mountains and lakes. Stopping at Kamloops just after midnight, the journey continues along through eastern BC and into Alberta (be sure to wake up early to see the Rockies at sunrise). Finally, you’ll arrive in Jasper at 11am the following day. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and crystal-clear lakes, this laid-back town is the ideal base for exploring the Rockies and Jasper National Park.

The Ocean, Montréal to Halifax, Canada

Many visitors flock to western Canada for its big-name national parks and hulking mountains, but the east coast is stunning in an entirely different way. Seeing the delights of this charming region is easy on board VIA Rail’s The Ocean . Beginning at 7pm in Montréal, the journey whisks you alongside the Lac Saint-Pierre, before passing through New Brunswick by night and then onto the picturesque lakes of Nova Scotia. Finally, you’ll arrive in Halifax at 5.51pm the following day.

Napa Valley Wine Train, Napa to St Helena, California

What could be better than drifting past emerald-green vineyards with a glass of wine in hand? Perhaps doing so on one of Napa Valley Wine Train's  unique vintage carriages, which travel on a 36-mile (58km) there-and-back trip from Downtown Napa to St Helena on an original 1864 rail line. The carriages, with their opulent velvet-upholstered seats, mahogany paneling and brass, have been sensitively restored to evoke the glamor of vintage train travel.

Offering the perfect combination of history, stunning landscapes and (of course) great wine, there's a range of packages on offer, from half-a-day winery tours with tastings to on-board dining experiences and special events, like the Murder Mystery dinner theater option. As you might expect, food and wine options aboard are ultra-opulent, with most packages offering multi-course gourmet meals and complimentary private-label wines. Needless to say, all of this doesn’t come cheap – prices are only available on application. 

Sky Railway, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Skirting through some of New Mexico’s finest scenery, the tantalizingly named Sky Railway is just as fantasy-filled as you’d imagine. The journey is made all the more enticing by the fact this 141-year old heritage route was recently saved by a group of rail enthusiasts ( Game of Thrones author George RR Martin among them). Since its revival in late 2021, it’s been given a new lease of life as a family-friendly adventure trip.

Denali Star, Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alaska

Ditch the car and opt for a more climate-friendly journey through one of America’s most beautiful (and least-visited) national parks. The Alaska Railroad's flagship train  Denali Star embarks on a 12-hour ride between Anchorage and Fairbanks via Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali. Along the 365-mile (587km) route, the train rushes past rivers and mountains and offers expansive panoramas of Hurricane Gulch from the top of a 296-foot (90.2m) bridge.

Copper Canyon train, Los Mochis to Chihuahua City, Mexico

This nine-hour trip between Los Mochis, Sinaloa and Chihuahua City, Chihuahua, has rightly gained a reputation as one of the most epic rail journeys in the world. The famous Copper Canyon through which it travels is nothing short of magical: think dramatic gorges, towering peaks and historic colonial towns. It’s possible to travel in both directions, but we’d advise setting off from Los Mochis so you get to see the most stunning scenery (much of which is at the beginning of the route) before the sun sets. 

Mount Washington Cog Railway, Mount Washington, New Hampshire

Dubbed “the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world”, this one-of-a-kind route traverses the steep summit of Mount Washington, reaching a 37% gradient at certain points. Located in the gorgeous Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, in the heart of the White Mountains, the National Historic Engineering Landmark is certainly a fun way to discover rural New England. 

Georgetown Loop Railroad, Georgetown to Silver Plume, Colorado

Want to travel across this terrifying-looking railroad? While we admit the aptly named Devil's Gate High Bridge, which features a 100-foot (30m) drop over Clear Creek, isn’t for the faint-hearted, this thrilling experience is at the top of many rail buffs’ wish lists. It’s no surprise that when it was completed back in 1884, this circular railroad connecting Georgetown and Silver Plume was seen as an engineering marvel and attracted visitors from all over.

Grand Canyon Railway, Williams to Grand Canyon Village, Arizona

It’s been a favorite road trip destination for decades, but you might not have thought to visit the Grand Canyon by rail. Yet this underrated (and surprisingly affordable) excursion has to be one of the most beautiful train journeys on the planet. Beginning in Williams, a small town 30 miles (48km) west of Flagstaff, Grand Canyon Railway meanders through ponderosa pine forests and open prairie, stopping at Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim before heading back to Williams.

Jose Cuervo Express, Guadalajara to Tequila, Mexico

Tequila fans need look no further: we’ve found the perfect train for you. Traveling the 11-hour journey between Guadalajara and the town of Tequila, the Jose Cuervo Express allows you to taste a wide variety of tequilas while whizzing past endless agave fields, all in a highly luxurious setting. Along the way, guests will also tour a distillery to discover how the spirit is made, wander the historic streets of Tequila and see an agave harvesting demonstration.

Trains depart from Guadalajara every Saturday and passengers can choose between four carriages: Express, Premium Plus, Diamond or Elite (pictured). On this luxury option, enjoy a large adults-only lounge and open bar providing a range of tequila cocktails, with decor inspired by the old-school glamor of the Orient Express. Tickets start at around 2,590 Mexican pesos ($128).

White Pass & Yukon route, Skagway, Alaska to White Pass summit, Canada

Want to feel like you’re on top of the world? A journey on the unforgettable White Pass & Yukon , which climbs nearly 3,000 feet (914m) from Skagway, Alaska to White Pass Summit in Canada’s Yukon territory, should do the trick. The 40-mile (64km), 2.5-hour round trip also takes place on a historic railroad dating back to 1898, when it was built to give greater access to mines at the time of the Klondike Gold Rush.

Today’s travelers can enjoy the ride from a range of vintage train carriages, kitted out with balconies to allow for optimum sightseeing and picture-taking. Among the incredible sights you’ll see are Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point and Dead Horse Gulch – so named because some 3,000 horses tragically died here while traversing the Chilkoot Trail before the railroad was built. Between April and October each year there are several departures a week, with tickets starting at C$134 ($105) for adults and C$67 ($53) for children.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Durango to Silverton, Colorado

Often listed as one of the world’s greatest routes, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a unique journey through America’s history. Original coal-fired locomotives from the 1880s follow in the tracks of countless miners, cowboys and gunslingers from the Old West, giving an insight into what train travel was like some 140 years ago. In fact, the railroad has even been listed as a National Historic Landmark to protect its heritage. 

On the 45-mile (72km) trip, the train crosses the Animas River five times and winds its way through canyons in the stark wilderness of the San Juan National Forest. Travelers pass farmlands, old stagecoach roads and the brooding Tacoma Power Plant along the way. There are four classes to choose from during the summer season from May through to October, with prices starting at $94.

Ethan Allen Express, Burlington, Vermont to New York City

We can't think of a much better way to experience gorgeous fall colors than this. The Ethan Allen Express , which was launched by Amtrak just ahead of fall, takes passengers on a leisurely seven-hour journey between Burlington, Vermont and New York, stopping at Rutland and Albany along the way. The scenery you'll pass is incredible, from idyllic New England countryside as you pass through the Hudson Valley to the historic college towns and maple tree forests of Vermont.

You could sit back and soak up the scenery all day, but if you wish to break up the route there are plenty of worthwhile stops. Be sure to take some time exploring Saratoga Springs, where horse-racing, elegant Victorian architecture and plenty of independent shops and restaurants await. Outdoorsy types should make a beeline for Rutland, which offers skiing opportunities by winter and gorgeous hiking year-round.

Georgetown Loop Railroad

Completed in 1884, Colorado's historic narrow-gauge Georgetown Loop now operates a mix of diesel-electric and steam engines from Georgetown to Silver Plume. On the 75-minute round-trip route, passengers can ride in box cars with bench seating that is open in the summer or fully enclosed parlor cars during the holiday season. Optional silver mine guided walking tours during the summer take visitors deep into Leavenworth Mountain for a glimpse of working in a 19th-century mine.

What to know when planning an awe-inspiring hike on the Inca Trail

While on the Inca Trail, every step — past ancient ruins, up stone staircases and over Dead Woman's Pass — brings hikers closer to their final goal: reaching Machu Picchu. Trains and buses drop thousands of visitors off here every day, but hiking in offers an unmatched experience. Hikers get to sit in sacred spaces, sleep under the stars and bond with their fellow adventurers. The promise of being able to reach the Sun Gate and take in that first view of Machu Picchu keeps them motivated.

Planning a hike on the Inca Trail takes time. There are also important factors to keep in mind, like when the dry season is and what time of year the trail is closed for maintenance. Here are some tips to ensure an epic experience.

What is the Inca Trail?

The Classic Inca Trail is a 25-mile-long hiking trail in the Andes Mountains that takes four days to complete and ends at Machu Picchu. After starting at KM 82 in the Sacred Valley, hikers will follow the stone paths that wind by sites like the Valley of Llulluchapampa, Sayacmarca ruins and Wiñay Wayna complex. On the final day of the trek, you most likely will rise well before dawn in order to arrive at the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu around sunrise.

How soon should you start planning a hike?

If possible, think about booking six to nine months in advance. The peak season to visit is June through August, and with the Inca Trail being a popular hike, permits are snapped up quickly. 

What is the best time of year to hit the trail?

The trail is open year-round except in February, when it is closed for maintenance. Dry season is May through September, "where temperatures are milder and you can expect bright, sunny days, making for great visibility along the hike," Krissy Concannon, an independent affiliate of Travellustre in Boston, told The Week. The Inca Trail is one direction only, and when the adventure is over you will leave by train or bus.

Do I need to train for the Inca Trail? 

Preparation for the hike should start before you leave home

This is a strenuous hike at a high altitude, traversing different landscapes like cloud forests and grasslands. Travelers should expect to travel six to nine miles a day and can train ahead of time by hiking with a pack or getting regular exercise at home. Julie Sudderth of Vivid Getaways in Dallas told The Week she has seen "hikers from 7 to 70 years old command this trail with no problems." The Inca Trail reaches an elevation of 13,800 feet above sea level, making acclimation critical, especially for those who have experienced altitude sickness previously. Concannon recommends spending at least two or three days in Cusco prior to the hike to acclimate better to the altitude.

What kind of experiences can you have on the trail?

Every trip has one element in common: You must go with an operator and cannot hike on your own. "Normally, the best companies go with the best guides," Sudderth said. "This is invaluable." Good guides "will know when to slow down or quicken the pace as they are actively reading the client’s demeanor," she added, and also "weave the rich history, wildlife and flora and fauna into the hike" while keeping everyone "engaged and motivated. With children especially, this is priceless."

Those who want to go all out can book a private or small group hike, with an expert guide and porters, a well-stocked and clean bathroom tent, gourmet meals and high-quality camping gear, from the pillows to the tents. Midrange experiences are catered toward hikers who do not want a bare-bones trip but also aim to keep costs down, and include nice gear and good food with moderate accommodations.

Concannon warns that when opting for low-cost hiking tours, travelers "need to be cautious to ensure operators are not cutting corners that could negatively impact their experience. Hikers can expect minimal or lesser quality gear and food options to be more minimal. Campsite options could also be less than ideal, with locations lacking in view."

On each Long Weekend, Michael reveals the secrets, sites and people that make the cities tick. He finds the best restaurants, bars, food markets and hotels, as well as the places only the locals know and love.

The broadcaster, who is joining Good Housekeeping readers on a special rail journey aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express next year , explores hidden neighbourhoods and meets up with locals who show him the city’s hidden treasures.

In the vibrant and bustling Spanish capital Madrid , Michael returns to many places he knows well, having visited the city regularly for over 60 years.

The episode begins in the city centre on the busy Gran Via boulevard, home to Madrid’s famous golden triangle of art museums and El Retiro Park.

Michael then heads for an early lunch at a restaurant he knows well in the Old Town, one with only one dish on the menu: suckling pig.

Viewers can expect hotel bars with a shady history of espionage, a traditional confectioner who makes a classic Spanish nougat, and a bespoke tailor specialising in a very stylish cape.

In between the hustle and bustle, Michael squeezes in a visit to the family flat where he stayed as a boy, in the years after the Spanish Civil War.
