The word “Ghatshila” is derived from two words: “ghat,” which means a mountain pass, and “shila,” which means a rock. 

Therefore, the literal meaning of Ghatshila is a “rocky mountain pass.”

Burudi Lake is at a distance of 11 km from the township. The state government of Jharkhand takes responsibility for maintaining it regularly. 

Lush green forests surround the Lake and offer visitors a serene and peaceful environment. Boating facilities are also available at Burudi Lake. 

Apart from Landscape photography, it is also popular for sightseeing and Bird Photography. The Lake is home to several species of birds, including kingfishers, egrets, and cormorants.

Note:  Tourists sometimes spell the spot Burudih Dam or Burudih Lake. That is, ‘Burudi’ with an extra alphabet ‘H’. It is completely wrong. Burudih is a different place which is about 46 km from Ghatshila. It is important to note the above difference if you are driving to this Lake, referring to any map.

Gauri Kunj Heritage Site:  

Gauri Kunj is a popular heritage site located in Ghatshila.

The heritage site was once the house of Bengali writer Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay. He is best known for his novels “Pather Panchali” and “Aparajito.”

After his death, the house was converted into a museum. Now, the museum showcases the life and work of Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay. The museum contains various artifacts, including the writer’s personal belongings, manuscripts, and photographs.

Visiting the Gouri Kunj can be a great opportunity for photography enthusiasts. They can capture architectural photos of the heritage site and document the famous writer’s legacy.

Note:  It is advisable to carry a zoom lens to capture detailed shots of the birds from a distance without disturbing them. 

Raatmohana:  

Raatmohana is another tourist spot of attraction in Moubhandar. The place is just 2.5 km away from Ghatshila. Visitors can enjoy an amazing view of the sunset in the hills from the refreshing banks of the river Subarnarekha. By the way, the word ‘Subarnarekha’ means Golden Streak.

At Ratmohana, there is a waterfall known as Ratmohana Waterfalls. The waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery and tall trees. It is known for its tranquil ambiance.

Several nature enthusiasts and photographers visit Ratmohana Falls. The waterfall has a height of around 30 feet. The waterfall is sourced from the rolling small hills that surround the town.

Catch a flight from Indira Gandhi International Airport to reach Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi or Jamshedpur Airport. From there, you need to take a bus or a cab to reach your destination.

Dharagiri Waterfalls

Dharagiri Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ghatshila. Very close to Burudih Dam, this place is just 9 km away from the town. Make sure to visit during monsoon in case you want to see the falls in full force from a height of 25 ft. If you are lucky, you might find some wild elephants roaming here and there. The water is so transparent and pure that you can taste it as well.

Ratmohana Hill

Ratmohana Hill should be on your list if you want to see Ghatshila at its best. This is another place to witness the sunset and sunrise, just like Phuldungri Hills.

The unwavering beauty of the Subarnarekha River is to look forward to, along with the mysticism of the Sal and Amla trees. After you spend a tiring day exploring popular locations, this is your chance to unwind.

Narwa Forest

Just 10 km away from Rankini Kali Temple, Narwa Forest might seem simple enough when you first see it. But the view of the river flowing in the middle can blow your mind. It is a peaceful place where no one will disturb you, and you can enjoy some alone time.

If you’re with your family, arrange a small picnic. Watch for the lizards and the butterflies, and make sure to capture some moments.

Pancha Pandav

Ghatshila is a place full of legends, and there are five stones lying still to vouch for it. Go 5 km north-east, and you will see the amazing erosion of ancient stones. But don’t tell the locals that; they believe these are the incarnations of five Pandavas from the Mahabharata. They also believe that the five brothers were here while they were in exile.

Regardless of the legends, you will enjoy the place more when a train runs through the field. You will relate to it a lot if you’ve already seen ‘Pather Panchali’.

Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay’s Cottage

As I already wrote, Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay lived here for quite some time. His cottage, Gourikunj, is now a heritage site. Just in case you are a fan of either him, Satyajit Ray, or both, this place is a must-visit.

People who visit Ghatshila don’t want to miss such a location, which used to be the birthplace of a few of his notable works. A few years ago, the state government of Jharkhand renovated the house and turned it into a tourist attraction. Just 2 km away from the heart of the town, this place also includes a monument dedicated to Bhibhuti Bhushan.

Ram Krishna Math

Founded in 1922, Ram Krishna Math in Ghatshila is an exceptional place to visit for any visitor. Just 2 km from Ghatshila, it is an educational hub where you can see what real discipline looks like. Take a guided tour to visit the auditorium, campus, buildings, temple, and library.

Pro-tip : Don’t forget to bring a good-quality camera wherever you visit Ghatshila. You never know exactly when you might stumble upon a stunning landscape.

Head to the main road, and you will find a variety of shops there.

Is Ghatshila worth visiting?

To find an answer to the question, you must take it from those who’ve already been there.

Luckily, my brothers recently visited Ghatshila in August. Before writing this piece of information, I asked them about their trip.

And guess what happened next? They couldn’t stop telling me about their unique experiences in Ghatshila.

I also made them spill the beans about the things they’d found unique. Their answers were Desi Chicken (they are foodies), the scenery, and the greenery!

They also highly recommend visiting the place during the monsoon season as the rain enhances the experience. It highlights Ghatshila’s natural beauty in the best way possible.

So, the answer is yes. Ghatshila is a must-visit destination that will not disappoint.

You’ll have a great city view when you reach the hill’s peak. Using the spiral road, you can even drive to the top. 

The hillock is covered with a thick forest of Sal trees, and the path to the top is beautiful. The whole way is made of red rocks. The beautiful green trees on either side of the road will look very pretty. 

Sunrise or sunset is the best time to go to Phuldungri Hill. If you visit at dawn or dusk, the scenery will leave you speechless.   

You can go to the top of the peak if you want to try something new. The path is beautiful, and many people who like to try new things go there by hiking. 

The hill of Phuldungri is also famous for something else. The book “Aranyak,” which was written by Bibhutibhushan Bandophadya, was based on this rock. 

Since no food stands are nearby, you should bring snacks and a water bottle. You’ll be too tired to go up the hill if you don’t.

2. Burudih Dam

Burudih Dam is another beautiful place in Ghatshila that people visit all year. The Dam was built long ago when Britain was in charge. 

As the stunning Dalma hill surrounds it, the whole area is lovely. Moreover, the Dalma wildlife refuge is just a short distance from the Dam. 

Because the Dam is close to the wildlife refuge, wild elephants sometimes come close to it. In addition, as one of the area’s most beautiful places to visit, many people from West Bengal come here. 

In October, if you go to the Burudih Dam, you can see the Binda Mela. This mela takes place for fifteen days on the shore of the lake.

As you travel around the fare, you can buy beautiful handicrafts made by the tribal people there. You can also purchase works in the Madhubani and Warli styles. 

If you like trying new things, you can ride a banana boat or water surfing. The tourism department of Jharkhand worked hard to make Burudih Dam a famous place for tourists. 

Since the spot is only 8 km from Ghatshila’s main city center, you will be able to get there quickly. You can easily rent an auto rickshaw or a taxi in Ghatshila. Most tourists rent cars to get there.

3. Narwa Forest – Places To Visit In Ghatshila

One of the greatest locations to visit in Ghatshila is Narwa Forest. It is close to the well-known Rankini Mandir. 

Simply, this site is beautiful. This forest is a great place to think because it has small creeks and a river that flows quickly. 

There is a cement place where you can sit by the river. Most of the time, people go there with friends or family. 

Sitting there for a while will give you a sense of peace. However, the whole area is far away. So it’s best not to go there at night. 

You’ll have a better time if you bring lunch and some water. You can even have a nice lunch with your friends and family there. 

To get there, you must take a car or an auto rickshaw from Ghatshila. You should ask someone in the area how to get there because the path through the bush is a little tricky.

4. Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay Cottage

Ghatshila was where the famous Bengali author Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay lived. So, stopping by his house will be a good idea if you are looking around town. 

The “Apu” series was what made him most well-known. You will also see a plaque for the author. 

A few years ago, the government of Jharkhand fixed up the house. In the 1950s, the author Bibhutibhushan died in the cottage. 

Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s Cottage is a popular place for tourists to visit in Ghatshila. The first book in the trilogy was so popular that Satyajit Roy turned it into a movie. 

When “Pather Pachali” came out, it also got an Oscar. So if you admire books and movies, you should visit such a famous author’s house.

5. Pancha Pandav

Pancha Pandav is one of the most well-known sights to view in Ghatshila. This place is just 5 km from the center of Ghatshilacity. 

Over there, you’ll see five men-shaped rocks formed by nature. Even though they were damaged, the stones resemble the Mahabharata’s five Pandav brothers. 

The statues are exciting, and you will be amazed when you see them for the first time. They look like people made them. 

But the truth is that they have been that way for a long time. The area around this spot is also stunning. 

There is a train stop near Pancha Pandav. So you will see trains going through the paddy fields. 

When the sun goes down, the scenery looks even more beautiful. 

Since the spot is just a short distance from Ghatshila, you can walk there. Remember to bring your camera, because this place is gorgeous.

6. Dharagiri Waterfalls

In Ghatshila, Dharagiri Waterfall is a great place to go. You should stop by this place while you’re at Burudih Dam. 

This waterfall is pretty close to the Dam. However, this fall is only 25 feet high. 

If you go there during the rainy season, you will see the water flowing down with a lot of force. 

Since this spot is only 9 km from Ghatshila, you can take an auto-rickshaw. There are some tea stands near the waterfall where you can try some of the best food in the area. 

The cost to get into this fall’s grounds is INR 20. You can also bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a nice day there.

7. Ranikini Kali Temple – Places To Visit In Ghatshila

The Ranikini Kali temple is in Ghatshila. It is a place of worship for Goddess Kali. 

Both people and tourists know about this temple. However, you might be shocked to learn that people were killed inside the temple in the past. 

Even though we don’t know if it’s true, the people of Ghatshila are sure the story is true. People think the temple is all about sacred things. 

They pray to Goddess Kali to get what they want. Those who are religious should also go to the Ranikini Kali temple. 

You should also check out the Jadugora Hills right next to this place. Tourists rarely go to the hill, but it is stunning. 

This temple is 16 km from Ghatshila, so rent a car. If you do, getting back to Ghatshila from there will be easy.

8. Ratmohana

Aside from Phuldungri Peak, Ratmohana is the best place in Ghatshila to watch the sun set or rise. This place is so beautiful that if you go there, you will fall in love with Ghatshila. 

When you reach this hill’s top, you’ll see that the beautiful river Suvarnarekha is always running. Also, big trees like Sal, Simul, Amla, and others grow all around the spot. 

Because of this, the whole area seems peaceful and calm. Most of the time, people visit this spot in the evening after seeing other sights in Ghatshila. 

From Ratmohana, you can see one of the most beautiful sunsets you will ever see.

Ghatshila is a town in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand , India .

The city is located on the bank of the River Subarnarekha (the word ‘Subarnarekha’ means golden streak), and is situated in an undulating forested area. It has been a popular place frequented mostly by people from West Bengal, who have been going there for a change of place and climate. The noted Bengali writer Bibhuti Bhusan Bandyopadhyay of Pather Panchali fame was a resident of the city.

A small township with mixture of people from communities like Bengalis, Biharis, Gujratis, Marwadis, Punjabis and Muslims, all staying together in harmony participating in each other's festivals. Geographically placed between two mountain ranges with the Subarnarekha river separating them from kissing each other. Aerial view is beautiful from top of any mountain like the Surda pahar . You can find the rocky river flowing in between hilly & rocky terrain with patches of human habitants, painting an awesome landscape. On one side of your view, you can find smoking chimneys of the Hindustan Copper factory suggesting the industrialization that en marks this fast growing township. People stay in a variety of modern & old houses. If you take a walk down to Aam Bagan , Rajestate you can feel the village life with cows & chickens roaming here and there and housewives smoking the traditional chulhas (burners) with intoxicating smells of burning cow dungs. • By rail - It is a railway station on the Kharagpur-Tatanagar stretch of Howrah-Mumbai track, 215 km from Howrah are 2781/2782 Ispat Express, 8030/8029 Kurla/ Howrah Express, 2813/2814 Steel Express. It is well connected to 3 Metros in India namely Mumbai(by Bombay Express), Kolkata(many trains starting from 6AM by Steel Exp. to midnight at 1.15 by Samleshwari Exp) and New Delhi(by Neelachal & Utkal Exp).

There are many Local Passenger trains connecting Jamshedpur and Kharagpur with Ghatshila. For timings etc. check with Indian Railways .

• By road – It is about 240 km from Kolkata . Those travelling from Kolkata first have to take NH 6 to Bahragora and then take the road to Jamshedpur. Buses plying between Kharagpur and Jamshedpur pass through Ghatshila. Buses going from Kolkata to Jamshedpur and Ranchi also pass through Ghatshila.By road Jamshedpur is 42 km away.

Get around [ edit ]

A hired car charges ₹800-₹1,000 to take tourists around the places of interest. Apart from these auto rickshaws are available for movement locally. If you plan to visit Jamshedpur & Ranchi, best & cheap place to stay is Ghatshila. You can rent a car and manage single day trips to cover these cities.

• Panch Pandav - 5 km north-west of Ghatshila, a stone is there bearing the figures of five men; the legend is that they are figures of the five Pandav brothers.
• Binda Mela - This fair is held in the month of Aswin (October) at Ghatshila proper for fifteen days. It was initiated from time immemorial by the fore fathers of the Raja of former Dhalbhum estate. Utensils, sweet meats, ornaments etc. are sold by petty shopkeepers. It is a very popular, particularly for the Santhals.

Notable places in and around Ghatshila are: the house of Bengali writer Bhibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, Phuldongri Hill, Burudi Lake, Rankani Temple(Jadugora & Ghatsila),Dharagiri Falls, Naroa Forest, Mosaboni Mines & Surda Pahar. 8 km from Ghatshila is Galudi, another tourist spot on the banks of the Subarnarekha. Tatanagar is just a day's trip from Ghatshila.

At each pockets of the township, a public tube well or Chaapaakal can be found where you can taste fresh water. The water is said to have medicinal values. A glass of water is enough to fill-up your empty stomach.

Should try sweet Kalakand out there which is vary famous. Most famous and oldest Kalakand seller is Ganesh Kalakand.

The best way to reach Ghatshila from Kolkata is by train.

There are several trains available, such as Howrah-Chakradharpur Passenger, Howrah-Barbil Jan Shatabdi Express, Howrah-Tatanagar Steel Express, etc. The train journey may take about 4 to 5 hours.

To reach Ghatshila by bus, you can take a bus from Kolkata to Jamshedpur and then another bus to Ghatshila. It takes about 4-5 hours. The bus journey may take longer depending on the traffic and the availability of buses.

Ghatshila, Jharkhand

Ghatshila literally means "rocky landing of a river" (here Ghat means River wharf or quay and Shila means Rocky land ), is a small city on the bank of the Subarnarekha River, which located within forests area in East Singhbhum district of the Jharkhand, India. Ghatshila is famous for its refreshing natural beauty and considered as a prominent tourist destination in Jharkhand. Especially for the people of West Bengal, Ghatshila renowned as a health resort and large numbers of Bengali tourists going there for the change of weather. Ghatshila is also famous for the great Bengali novelist Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay, one of his master-piece work is “Pather Panchali” . Now a day JTDC (Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation) takes initiatives to promote state tourism all over the country and abroad.

It also serves as the block headquarters of Ghatsila Block which was established on 4th May 1962. From the establishment of the town, it has a cosmopolitan culture and several different communities and groups like Bihari, Bengali, Gujarati, Marwari, Punjabi and others reside here together with a secular harmony. According to the census report 2011, the city has a population of 40,624.

In the middle era of Indian history, Ghatshila was ruled by Bengali communities. Later on, they were uprooted by Dhalbhum Dynasty and established their capital at Ghatshila. The oldest son of the ruling king takes the title of Yuvraj. Dhalbhum Raja Jagannath constructed the "Rankini Mandir" at Galudih, but it was shifted at Ghatshila after some years including all the associates. The Rajas of Dhalbhum were able to continue their control over this region till the colonial British rule.

A magnificent aerial view of Ghatshila city from the top of Phuldungri Hills is unforgettable. It also serves as a sunset and sunrise view point. Rankini Kali Temple of Ghatsila was constructed to worship to Kalimata, which is known as "Rankini Mata" . According to past stories Narabali was done in the temple of Ghatsila. Rankini Devi is very popular among the local people and they believe the power and influence of the deity Maa Rankini. You can also trip to Jadugora hills which located just opposite to this temple.

Burudih Dam placed just 6 km North from Ghatshila. It was built in the British rule. You can play here with the speed or paddle boats. Binda Mela is held every year in the month of October at Ghatshila on the bank of the lake for fifteen days. It is a very popular, particularly for the Santhals tribes.

Dharagiri Waterfall is located about 9 km North from Ghatshila. It falls 21 ft down from Dharagiri Hill. You will found here a prehistoric stone curving on the falls riverside and a Kali temple. This region is a forestry hilly type and perfect for picnicking.

Ratmohona is a popular tourist attraction close to Ghatshila on the bank of Subarnarekha. It is famous for witnessing the sunrise and sunset. On the way of this spot you have to cross Galudih barrage.

Pancha Pandav is a small hill situated about 5 km north-east to the Ghatshila. It is famous for the natural sculpture on a stone, which shaved as heads of five men due to the erosion of the stone. And people believed it as the natural creation of five brothers of Pandava, all those are the heroic characters of Hindu mythological epic the Mahabharata.

Some other popular tourist attractions in and around Ghatshila are the Naroa Forest, Bibhuti Memorial Bhavan, Hindustan Copper Limited, Purna Pani, Mosaboni Mines, Jadugora, Surda Pahar, Moubhandar, Tumandungri, The River Subarnarekha, Kerukocha, Baba Bhairob etc. Ghatshila is also famous as picnic spots to local visitors of Jharkhand.

How to reach Ghatshila?

Travel by Railways Ghatshila railway station is on the Howrah-Mumbai railway line, and 32 trains run from Howrah to Ghatshila every days. All the express and passenger trains stop here. Three major cities of India namely Mumbai, Kolkata (Howrah) and Delhi are regularly connected with several express trains to this station like Bombay Express (from Mumbai); Steel Exp, Samleshwari Exp (from Kolkata) and Neelachal, Purushottam Exp & Utkal Exp (from Delhi). You can also reach Ghatshila by lots of regular passenger trains from Jamshedpur and Kharagpur of West Bengal. Tatanagar is a well-known city in Jharkhand, located 36 km away. There have 19 trains every days from Ghatshila to Tata.

Travel by Roadways Major cities from where tourists mainly come to visit Ghatshila are Kolkata (268 km), Ranchi (156 km), Jamshedpur (47 km), Kharagpur, Bhubaneswar, etc. if you are a tourist from Kolkata then first you have to take a journey through NH-6 to Baharagora to Jamshedpur and then finally to Ghatshila. Regular buses are connected between Kharagpur to Jamshedpur and Bhubaneswar & Kolkata to Jamshedpur & Ranchi also pass via Ghatshila.

Travel by Airways If you plan to visit Ghatshila by airways then the airport of Ranchi (IXR) will be suitable for you and it is located about 156 km away from the city. After reaching Ranchi airport you have to journey by roadways or railways. It takes around 3 hours to reach Ghatshila from Ranchi airport. But, there have no regular flights from other major cities of India. So, check the availabilities before make a tour plan. Netaji Subhas Chandra Airport (CCU) or Dumdum airport, Kolkata, West Bengal is another nearby airport to Ghatshila, situated around 194 km away from Ghatshila. It is an international airport and have regular flights from all over India and abroad.

Ghatshila, the little forest town in East India

Ghatshila is an idyllic township enclosed with natural beauties. The town is located in the Ghatshila CD(Community Development) block in the Ghatshila subdivision of the East Singbhum district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. As it is enveloped by nature, it has established itself as the covetable destination of the tourists from West Bengal, other forms of India and abroad. 

Literally, ‘Ghatshila’ is meant as ‘rocky landing of a river where ‘Ghat’ means ‘River wharf’ and ‘Shila’ means ‘Rocky land’. This small city is situated on the ‘Subarnarekha’ river bank. Mainly tourists from West Bengal arrange their trips with a particular reason for the change of weather. So, Ghatshila is regarded primarily by Bengalis as their health resort. Nature here has adorned with its renditions, ready to serve its lovers. 

Among all of its ornamentations of nature, small hills covered with evergreen forests, coiled river Subarnarekha has enriched the city flowing beside it, along with this the lake, the small springs and waterfalls and forests surrounded all around, make its viewers feel themselves painters willing to portray the nature on canvas or to illustrate the same as poets. To confer yourself in the lap of nature or to be free from all of your fatigue, Ghatshila must be your covetable destination. In addition to Ghatshila city, some most popular spots are located in and around the city, regarded as famous sightseeings with their historical existences.

(I) Phuldungri Hill is that hillock mostly circumambient with tall Sal and Mahua trees and long grasses. This decoration of vegetations inspired the literary great Bibhutibhusan Bandyopadhya untunefully for his another immortal creation, ‘Aranyak’, where you will taste your adventurous thrill because of its unlighted ambience which comes from impregnability of sunlights. You will also be able to quench your immense greed for a grandeur pictorial view of the city of Ghatshila from the top of this hillock on the National High Way No 33. A zigzag way covered with red pebbles takes you to the top of the hill. Moreover, witnessing sunrise and sunset from the top of the hill is a divine experience.

(II) Rankini Temple, also known as ‘Rankini Mata’, is one of the deeds of the Dhalbhum dynasty kings. Raja Jagannath Deo Dhabal Deb I initially erected this shrine at Galudih. Later, he shifted this fane with its associates and other people to Ghatshila and shaped its new frame as goddess Kali. It is located on the Hata-Jadugoda state highway. It has been permanently addressed in the Rohinibera village of Bansila Gram Panchayat in Potka block. It is about 3kms from Jadugoda, ‘land of elephants'(a census town in the Musabani CD block in the Ghatshila subdivision of the East Singbhum district in the Indian state of Jharkhand) and 35kms away from Tatanagar Railway Station. The deity sedentary in the sanctum sanatorium is the incarnation of the goddess Kali. The rumour goes on that temple had a history of ‘Narabali'(human sacrifices) until about 1865 and was later stopped by the British.

This deity(Maa Rankini or Rankini Devi) has deep popularity among the locals from the belief in their divine mother’s power and influence. Jadugora hills are located just opposite this temple, waiting impatiently for the expected visits of the tourists. Goddess Rankini Mata is worshipped in the form of a ‘Shila'(natural rock) and decorated with sindoor(vermilion), garlands and silver eyes. This divine mother has been adored by a priest from ‘Bhimji Tribe’ from ancient times until today. Coconut and batasa(lollipop) are offered as Bhoga. Daily Aarati(subjugation) is held here at 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

(III) Burudi Lake and Dam: Enclosed by the hillocks, the Burudih Lake has its administrative location of 9kms distance from the Ghatshila Block in East Singhbhum, built during the British colonial rule. This artificial lake is ready to provide the facilities of motor or speed and paddle boating with upcoming provisions for water surfing(a surface water sport in which an individual or a surfer uses a board to ride on the forward section or face of a moving wave of water, which usually carries the surfer towards the shore.) and banana rides(a banana-shaped tube is connected to the speed boat which in turn pulls you. This spottiest lake is ornamental between low hills(a conspicuous and often rounded natural elevation of the earth’s surface, less high or craggy than a mountain) and dense green forests. These dense forests are a part of the elephant corridor from the Dalma range to Midnapur in West Bengal. The sunset view at this artificial lake makes the visitors feel like divinity and sailing in a boat on the lake, and you can spend your leisure with the spell. Binda Mela, the eagerly expected festival of the Santhals tribes, is held for fifteen days on the lake’s bank in October every year.

Burudi Dam is around 8 km away from the city of Ghatshila. It is a prominent picnic spot for its especially of sightly scenic beauty to the tourists of Jharkhand and West Bengal. It may be your weekend destination while it has a tropical climate(summer: 35°C to 40°C; winter: 10°C to 15°C). It is the best time for planning to trip to Burudih Dam in October, and it gets its highest visitors from December to February.

(IV) Pancha Pandava Hill is another attractive sight of Ghatshilaa, a small hill located at Moubhandar, five km from the NE of Ghatshila. ‘Pancha Pandava’ is mass talked-about due to its connection with the great Hindu epic, ‘Mahabharata’. A stone is exactly sedentary behind a ‘Kali Temple’ inside the ambit. This stone is remarkable for the footsteps of the five famous religious and epical characters familiarised as Pandavas of the Mahabharata named ‘Judhistir’, ‘Bheem’, ‘Arjuna’, ‘Nakul’ and ‘Sahadeva’, including ‘Draupadi’ marked on it during their exile. Another rumour goes that they rested for a night here through sleeping and left their marks on that particular stone, situated on top of the hill. It is also hearsay that this hill is famous for its natural creation of five brothers of Pandavas on it. This hill is shaped like the heads of five men due to the erosion of the stone.

(V) Dharagiri Waterfall is a natural flow of water drenching the rough and rugged ‘Dharagiri Hill’ and enamouring the tourists for years as ‘Dharagiri Waterfall’. It is located at Basadera, 10 km away to the north in the town of Ghatshila. Dharagiri is also 5.7 km away from Burudi Dam. It has sequestered itself inside the dense forest of Jharkhand for centuries. As a result, it remains obscure among the tourists. So, its water is crystal clear for the creatures to quench their thirsts. It is also a covetable destination for traditional people to enjoy a picnic inside a dense forest. A glimpse of wild elephants may be possible if you are fortunate. Its origin is from the Subarnarekha river from the top of the edgy rock from approximately 20 to 25 feet. It is the best time to plan for a trip to Dharagiri Waterfall in August but the months of December to February are suitable for preparing for a picnic.

(VI) Ratmohona Hill is very popular with tourists and is close to Ghatshila. Stands on the Subarnarekha river bank in the vicinity of Tumangdangri. Tourists must move a few steps along the riverbank to reach Ratmohana Hill. This hill provides a magnificent view of sunrise and sunset every day. The way to the hill is demarked with Sal and Amla trees on each side. As a part of nature along with the talked-about hill of Ghatshila, the Subarnarekha river flows gently, which also attracts the tourists parallelly every year.

(VII) Bibhuti Memorial Bhavan(Gouri Kunja) is among the tourists, especially the book lovers are known with ‘Pather Panchali’, penned by Bengali writer, ‘ Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay ‘, regarded as one of the most eminent writers of the post-Tagore era in Bengali literature. ‘The world-famous film-maker Satyajit Ray later featured Pather Panchali’ with his ‘Apu trilogy’, and it became a milestone not only in the Indian film industry but also enriched the world film industry. ‘Pather Panchali’ was inscribed by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay when he was in his residence in Ghatshila until he died in 1950. This holy land, named ‘Gouri Kunja’, is a prime tourist attraction. A group of admirers of Bibhutibhushan was bolded to convert this holy land into a tourist spot to make its heritage worldwide. Gouri Kunja was ornamented with his dhoti-kurta and medals. This renowned writer’s birth and death anniversary(September 12 and November 1, respectively) are equally celebrated at this venue every year with grandeur.

There are more attractions in and around, such as Naroa Forest, Hindustan Copper Limited, Purna Pani, Mosaboni Mines, Jadugoda, Surda Pahar, Moubhandar, Tumandungri etc.

Mode of communications

Ghatshila is connected with the rest of India via Railways, Roadways and finally, Airways.

(1) Railway: Railway is the prime communication link between Ghatshila to the rest of the country. According to the rail network of Indian Railways, the distance between Howrah Junction and Ghatshila is 213 km and five daily direct trains. These five trains are as follows: Jana Shatabdi, Ispat Express, Intercity Express, Tata Steel Express, and Kriyo Yoga. All the express and passenger trains stop here. Tourists can also visit Ghatshila by lots of regular passenger trains from Kharagpur(Kgp) of West Bengal. Three major cities of India, namely Mumbai, Kolkata(Howrah) and Delhi, are well-connected to Ghatshila with several express trains like Bombay Express(from Mumbai); Steel Express, Samleshwari Express(from Kolkata-Howrah) and Neelachal, Purushottam Express and Utkal Express(from Delhi).

(2)Roadway: Ghatshila is about 250 km away from Kolkata, Ranchi(156km), and Jamshedpur(47km). From these cities and also from Kharagpur(KGP), Bhubaneshwar visitors come to Ghatshila. Travellers from Kolkata first have to take NH 6 to Baharagora, then take the road to Jamshedpur, and finally to Ghatshila. Buses between Kolkata to Jamshedpur and Ranchi, Kharagpur(KGP) to Jamshedpur and Kharagpur(KGP) to Bhubaneshwar take a halt at Ghatshila.

(3)Airway: Tourists may avail themselves of the airport of Ranchi(IXR), which is suitable for them and is located about 156 km from the city. After landing at Ranchi airport, tourists will have to journey by roadways or railways, which will take around three hours to reach Ghatshila. There are no regular flights from other major cities of India to arrive at Ghatshila. Since Dumdum airport is an international airport and 194 km away from Ghatshila, this airport provides regular flights from all over India and abroad.

Tourists at Ghatshila may spend a couple of days in the lap of nature and taste the sightly sights of this city at some following lodges and hotels.
