Legend has it that Princess Salamia from Bum Bum Island was hidden by her family in Bohey Dulang, to avoid an arranged marriage to an ill-famed Sultan from the Southern Philippines. She was turned into a fairy and hidden by the spirits after her vanishment. From a geology perspective, the island was formed from remnants of volcanic activity. Bohey Dulang is the second-largest island amongst the Tun Sakaran Marine Park Islands.

To get to Bohey Dulang, you will need to take a 30-minute boat ride from Semporna mainland. You will need to wear covered shoes on this challenging but rewarding hike. You can also rent the practical and sturdy Adidas Kampung shoe at a nominal fee. The newly established route allows only for a one-way route; 700 metres heading up, and 600 metres heading down, aided with some staircases along the way. Day trips to Bohey Dulang include trips to other neighbouring islands as well and can quickly be booked through tour agents in Semporna.

The difficulty of the hike up is highly dependent on your stamina. But fret not for those who are less fit, you will be mesmerized by the beautiful view upon reaching the top and that Instagrammable moment, it what makes the hike all worth it. “Super exhausting but worth the trip” would be a common expression for visitors.

A guide to Bohey Dulang, a paradise island in Sabah’s Celebes Sea

The beauty of Sabah’s islands is legendary. But while diving hotspots like Sipadan are having their moment, the archipelago has many other lesser-known islands such as the stunning Bohey Dulang

The glittering archipelago of Semporna is home to  pristine, palm-lined islands  – one of which is Bohey Dulang. Formed by the remnants of an ancient volcano, this mountainous landmass is the second-largest in Tun Sakaran Marine Park. Though an overnight stay on the island isn’t possible, it’s a popular day trip for birdwatching enthusiasts, trekkers and divers. But what truly sets it apart from other Bornean islands is the majestic view of archipelago from its highest peak – that view alone draws tourists year-round.

To get there, take a flight to Tawau and make your way to the fishing settlement of Semporna. Bohey Dulang is only a 35-minute speedboat ride away. Hire a private boat tour that gives you the flexibility to explore the island on your terms or opt for the island-hopping tours around the park that depart from the jetty each morning.

Before planning your escape here, here’s everything you need to know about Bohey Dulang.

1. It’s the second-largest island in the Tun Sakaran Marine Park 

 Tun Sakaran Marine Park, also known as the Semporna Island Park, comprises eight islands – Bodgaya, Sibuan and Bohey Dulang, to name a few – and two reefs. A shallow channel separates Bohey Dulang from the park’s largest island, Bodgaya. Entering the park will cost you between RM3 (for Malaysian nationals) and RM10 (for non-Malaysians) and these are sometimes included in the tour package fees. 2. It’s a paradise for bird lovers

Bohey Dulang was originally gazetted as a bird sanctuary in 1933, before being recognised as a state park along with its neighbouring islands in 2004 by Sabah Parks. Remember to pack in your birdwatching gear  – the island is rich in biodiversity and home to a wide variety of species such as pied hornbills, partridges, owls, fruit doves and more.

3. Bohey Dulang viewpoint has arguably the best view of the archipelago

The views from Bohey Dulang’s highest point are what draws most people to the island. From the 353m-high viewpoint, visitors are greeted by an almost unreal panorama of the lagoon’s crystal-clear waters and the coral reefs that lie beneath. Getting to the top will take you roughly 45 minutes – follow the 600m hiking trail which winds around the island and leads you to the peak. It’s not an easy walk but the views from this vantage point are truly rewarding. Tip: Schedule your climb in the morning to avoid the daytime tourist crowd.

4. What was an extinct volcanic crater now forms the island’s beautiful lagoon

Bohey Dulang, along with neighbouring island Bodgaya and the parks’ reefs, were once part of an extinct volcanic crater. Now flooded with seawater, it’s resulted in the large, beautiful 25-metres deep lagoon today. Its southern side is open to tourists, and just below the surface you’ll find an extensive stretch of coral reef nestled on what was the southern crater rim.

5. Nomadic seafarers call it home

Approximately 2,000 people reside in the marine park – most of whom are the nomadic Bajau Laut people. Known for their seafaring ways, they live in stilted houses and houseboats around the park and you can see their day-to-day lives and livelihood up close at Bohey Dulang. 

6. It’s possible to explore the entire island on foot

A ridge encircles the entire perimeter of the island. It is possible to cover it on foot if you follow the beach trail and mangroves – note that that this will be a rocky climb, though. Expect to see plenty of plant species, such as the rare orchid that’s native to the area, along the way.

7. Spend the night in a water villa on neighbouring islands 

Most people visit Bohey Dulang on a quick stopover as part of their island-hopping tour, but to really appreciate its rich flora and fauna, consider budgeting a full day. While a night’s stay on Bohey Dulang (or any of the islands within the marine conservation area) is not possible, visitors can book water villas on the neighbouring islands instead. The rustic Lato Lato Resort is one such option, popular for its 360-degree views of Tun Sakaran Marine Park, while Pom Pom Resort  offers mid-range wooden villas on its namesake island.

8. A giant clam center protects the parks’ endangered clams

The island is also home to the Giant Clams and Marine Invertebrate Hatchery, a research and conservation facility housed in a wooden stilt complex, overlooking the sea. As you might have guessed, rare giant clams are bred here. Launched in 2006, this hatchery is a collaboration between Malaysia’s Sabah Parks and the United Kingdom’s Marine Conservation Society. Visitors can check out the exhibition hall as well as the nurseries, where juveniles from seven of the world’s nine clam species are kept.

The Bohey Dulang viewpoint is a beautiful island viewpoint overlooking a curved bay with islands, jungle covered hills and clear turqouise waters. This epic viewpoint should definitely be on your Sabah Malaysia itinerary for 2024.

In this article we well tell you how to get to the Bohey Dulang viewpoint and what to expect.  Also there are some VERY important things you need to know – so please read carefully. Not preparing properly could mean you waste money and aren’t allow to trek to the viewpoint. Don’t worry we have you covered. Here is everything you need to know to get to the stunning Bohey Dulang viewpoint.

Before you read on: Children under 12 years old are not allowed to visit the Bohey Dulang viewpoint. This include young children in slings or carriers. Having trekked the route I am convinced out boys would have been absolutely fine trekking (they have done harder and more risky treks many times). But they still said no. SO this is not a suitable activity for families with kids. 

Where is the Bohey Dulang viewpoint located?

The Bohey Dulang viewpoint is located 25km northeast of Semporna off the east coast of Sabah in Borneo Malaysia. There is a short trek to get up to the viewpoint. 

How much does it cost to visit the Bohey Dulang viewpoint?

1 fees and permits.

Here are the fees that you will need to pay. Sabah Park Fees: RM50 for hiking. Jetty fee in Semporna RM10. Boat trips may or may not include these fees so you need to check this carefully when you book. There are also separate fees for snorkeling or diving: RM30 for snorkeling, RM150 for diving 

2 Private boat tour

For a private island hopping trip in Semporna expect to pay around RM600 – RM800 depending on the company and tour (roughly £120 – £160 or $150 – $180). You may need to barter and shop around as prices could be higher than this. 

3 Island hopping boat trip (Bohey Dulang plus other stops)

For a shared boat trip: Island hopping Semporna normally costs in the range of RM120 – RM200 per person (roughly £24 – £40 or $30 – $50) and normally includes equipment rental (snorkel, mask, fins and a life jacket) and lunch.

What do you need to bring to visit the Bohey Dulang viewpoint?

This is super important. Flip flops, sandals, high heels and open toe shoes are not allowed on this trail. There is a grumpy park warden sat at the bottom who is ready to stop people without appropriate footwear. Also remember children under 12 years old are NOT allowed to visit this viewpoint.

• Light loose fitting clothing for trekking
• Bottle of water
• Small day bag
• Mosquito repellant
• Suncream (SPF 50) 

If you are also planning to snorkel on the trip remember to bring swimming kit and towels. Your boat provider may be able to provide snorkeling equipment. Top tip – consider bringing your belongings in a small day bag with a dry sack. The dry sack should keep your kit dry when you are on the boat. 

How do you get to the Bohey Dulang viewpoint? 

Step 1: Get to Semporna. There are several ways to do this. 

Step 2: Arrange a boat. The cheapest way is to book onto a shared island hopping trip that includes the Bohey Dulang viewpoint. 

Step 3: Take the boat to the island and trek up to the viewpoint. 

The trek to the viewpoint is fairly short and the route is simple. You will probably be visiting with a guide who will accompany you up to the viewpoint. The trail is around 1km and steep at points. The trail is also quite rough at points.

The idea is that you trek up one trail to the viewpoint and trek back down a different trail. The trek is likely to take around 30 minutes each way depending on your pace. Once you reach the viewpoint there is an area to rest and take pictures. 

What else is there to do near the Bohey Dulang viewpoint?

There are lots of other beautiful islands to visit in the area. You can snorkel, swim and sunbathe in this area. Near Semporna you can also visit Mabul island – this is an amazing location for snorkeling and diving. Bohey Dulang Island: Paradise off the Coast of Borneo

When I was 15 years old my Mom gifted me a point and shoot camera for Christmas. I was immediately hooked. Growing up in El Salvador meant my lens was primarily fixated on beaches and volcanoes. A few years later, I migrated to Buenos Aires in Argentina to major in psychology at university.

A few months after arriving, I embarked on a trekking trip through Patagonia . That was the moment when I knew that I wanted to make travel photography my full time job. I wanted to set off on a lifelong journey to capture the magical corners of earth like Bohey Dulang Island.

Inspiration to Visit Bohey Dulang Island

I discovered Bohey Dulang Island when a sun bleached photo caught my eye on a tour stand near the Batu Caves . I asked the guy on the stand about this island and all he could tell me was that it was an island off the coast of Borneo. It turns out there are zillions of islands near Borneo.

Luckily, a few days later, I came across the same photo at a tour stand but this time it had the name: Bohey Dulang Island. After some planning I traveled to Semporna in Borneo and from there took a boat to the island.

I arrived at a long pier immersed in crystal-clear waters, corals and a lush green mountain towering over the landscape. The only signs of civilization were a couple of tin shacks on the shore. I had arrived in paradise.

Incredible Day Trip to Bohey Dulang Island

Bohey Dulang Island is part of a marine park so there are no hotels, homestays or any type of accommodation on the island itself. If you want to travel here you need to stay in Semporna, a small fishing port village.

The only inhabitants near the island are a nomadic tribe of sea gypsies who live on the water in small wooden shacks. I had the pleasure of visiting Bohey Dulang Island for a full day. Wanting to get a panoramic view, I hiked around 30-45 minutes to the very top of the island.

The views were some of the most epic I’ve ever seen. From the top you can see how the island sits beside an extinct volcanic crater that has now formed a lagoon with a million different shades of blue. After the hike, I visited a clam hatchery and learnt the ins and outs of seaweed farming.

In the afternoon I took to the sea and spent many hours snorkeling in the colorful reefs. I saw hundreds of species of colorful fish, sea anemones and two massive sea turtles. It was the most epic day and I will cherish it forever.

Favorite Places and Experiences on the Island

My favorite place on the island was definitely the top with the lookout. The views were breathtaking. The coral gardens were amazing too – so full of life and color. I think these experiences are the two must-do’s on the island.

Even if you’re not into hiking or snorkeling, the sheer beauty of the place is enough to make you fall in love with visiting. My day trip to Bohey Dulang Island was also educational in that I learnt about giant clams, sea gypsies and seaweed farming. It was an amazing day of adventure and learning.

Where to Stay when Visiting Bohey Dulang Island

As mentioned before, there are no places to stay on the island itself. I stayed in the fishing town of Semporna and I recommend coming here to do the Bohey Dulang Island day trip. However, there are other islands where you can find accommodation such as Sipadan or Mabul islands.

Sipadan island looks like a cool place to stay. Honestly, I wish I did more research about the nearby islands and their accommodation. Semporna was good for the daily boat tours plus they have a sea market.

What you Need to Know Before you Go

Bohey Dulang Island is pretty remote so getting there is an adventure in itself. First you have to get to Borneo, then travel to Semporna and finally take a boat to the island. I would recommend bringing the following items:

• Good shoes for hiking to the top of the island
• Snacks to keep your energy levels up during the day
• Mosquito repellent to keep the mosquitos away
• Cash so you can purchase what you need on the island
• GoPro camera or waterproof camera for photos and video

Bohey Dulang Viewpoint Hike and Island Hopping Tour in Sabah, Borneo

This is a comprehensive guide to visiting bohey dulang island and hiking to the viewpoint. it includes all the details about the hike and our recommendations for having the best experience when hiking on bohey dulang..

The Bohey Dulang hike is the only trail in Tun Sakaran Marine Park in Sabah, Malaysia. At the top, you'll enjoy an incredible 180-degree panorama over a crater-shaped lagoon. Hiking on Bohey Dulang island was one of the highlights of our trip to Sabah, and adding a hike to an island-hopping itinerary was a great way to diversify the activities on that day.

Information about the Bohey Dulang Hike in Sabah

The Bohey Dulang hike is a short and steep trail. The route is a clear dirt path, and there's no way to get lost. Starting from the ticket counter, every couple of hundred meters you will pass a park guide, who's keeping an eye on whether you're breaking any rules. The biggest challenge of this trail is the steep incline, which you have to ascend over a very short distance, especially on a hot day. To prevent damaging the trail, the hike is closed during and after rain.

Distance: 1.6KM (point to point)

Incline: 200M

Duration: 25 - 45 minutes

How to Get to the Bohey Dulang Hike in Sabah

The Bohey Dulang hike is located on an island with the same name. To get to Bohey Dulang island, you'll first need to reach the town of Semporna in northeast Borneo. The closest airport to Semporna is located in Tawau. You can also reach Semporna from other airports in northern Borneo (Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan) with a long-distance bus. It's also available to hire a local driver to take you from Sandakan to Semporna, but as the roads aren't in the best condition, besides being a bit more comfortable, you won't arrive much faster than with the bus.

If you're already in Semporna, the best way to get to Bohey Dulang is by joining a group day tour, which will also include a visit to another nearby island - Mantabuan, lunch, and two times snorkeling. When choosing a tour, always ask about the number of participants, as the fewer people, the better organized the tour will be. We tried three different tours to three different destinations with three different companies and can recommend Seabunny Scubacations and Blue Ocean, as we had a very positive experience on the tour with them.

To join the tour, you can contact the companies mentioned above by WhatsApp or head to one of the tourism jetties (Public Jetty next to Dragon Inn or Jetty Pelancong) to get your deal. The earlier you sign up, the more certain you'll find a place in the tour you want. There are many tour operators on both jetties, so you'll also get a place somewhere if you come right before the meeting time (between 8am to 9am).

There's no possibility to start the tour at sunrise or finish at sunset, even if you'd like to sign up for a private boat, as there's a security curfew in Semporna that doesn't allow any boat transportation after dark.

The Hike to Bohey Dulang Viewpoint in Sabah

To enter the Bohey Dulang trail, you must pay a fee for entering the Tun Sakaran Marine Park and also buy a ticket for the hike. These prices should be included in the day tour, so you'll find this option slightly more expensive (around 250 MYR/person) compared to other tours. Be sure to ask the tour operator if these payments are included in the package.

The path to the top of Bohey Dulang is very straightforward. It starts from the ticket counter, where you can also find a souvenir shop and free toilets, and heads up to the top without any alternative options. It's a steep dirt path with occasional stairs in the steepest places. The whole trail leads through dense jungle, so until you get to the top, you'll be covered from the strong sun. Even though you'll walk in the shade, it's very exhausting to hike up in hot temperatures, so make sure you have enough water with you. Take care of the right footwear. People in flip-flops aren't allowed to enter the hike. You don't need to have any specific shoes, so any sport shoes will be just fine. I walked up the whole trail in sandals, and nobody pointed me wrong.

Visit to Mantabuan and Snorkeling

During our one-day tour to Bohey Dulang and Mantabuan, we snorkelled in two different locations. Compared to other places we visited while island hopping in Sabah, these were the worst diving spots of all. Don't get me wrong; the waters of Sabah are some of the best diving spots in the world, with clear water and a huge variety of sea life. However, we enjoyed snorkeling more at Mabul and Mataking. We were still fortunate to see many different fish and even sea turtles, so don't be discouraged by our opinion. Instead, consider choosing a tour to the diving spots I mentioned above if you really want to focus on snorkeling or diving.

Mantabuan is a very small island. It's an ideal location to stop for a lunch break. Although the views of the endless ocean are beautiful, there's not much to do on Mantabuan island besides seeking shade under tall palm trees to protect yourself from the strong sun. Due to a military post, using a drone on Mantabuan isn't allowed.

Our experience at Bohey Dulang Hike in Sabah

Together with Maria, we agreed that combining a hike between island hopping was a very refreshing change. We found the hike to be very easy and quick, and as we reached the top in 20 minutes, we also had a nice workout. The viewpoint didn't disappoint us. From the top of Bohey Dulang, you can feel like you are a human drone. This viewpoint allows you to see an incredible 180-degree panorama over the crater-shaped lagoon and many other nearby islands far in the horizon. We really enjoyed both the hike and the view, and it was one of our favorite things we did during the whole trip to Borneo. We spent 20 minutes taking photos and just admiring the view before we returned down to the boat to continue our tour.

Spanning just about 313 hectares wide, Bohey Dulang Island is not only a paradise for birdwatchers and jungle trekkers, but also the perfect honeymoon destination for newlyweds.

Located in Semporna, Sabah, Bohey Dulang Island is the second largest island in the Tun Sakaran Marine Park archipelago. With a unique lagoon-like formation created by the flooding of seawater to a crater from the remnants of an ancient volcano, the sea around Bohey Dulang Island is inhabited by lots of colourful coral reefs, providing divers and snorkellers a picturesque view.

Besides diving and snorkelling, visitors can also hike up to the highest peak (353 metres) of Bohey Dulang to enjoy a scenic view of the surrounding area, and to be closer to the rare flora and fauna found on the island.

Bohey Dulang Island is also home to various species of birds, including hornbills, partridges, metallic pigeons, babblers, and black-naped fruit doves, making it a paradise for bird watchers.  

While you are at the island, you should visit the Giant Clam and Marine Invertebrate Hatchery to learn more about giant clams, especially some rare species, and see a few endemic species of giant clams at the nursery’s tank area. Besides that, the hatchery also conducts seaweed farming.

The island is also home to the nomadic Sea Gypsies, known as the Bajau Laut locally, whose water-bound lifestyle offers another unique and fascinating sight for visitors to witness.  

Accommodation is not available on the island; hence, visitors can stay at adjacent islands, such as Pom Pom and Mataking, and join day trip to Bohey Dulang Island. Alternatively, visitors can also stay at Semporna town, which offers a range of accommodation to choose from.

How To Get There

Bohey Dulang Island is a 35-minute speedboat ride away from Semporna. From Pom Pom and Mataking islands, it takes about 20 minutes by speedboat to reach Bohey Dulang.

Day 1: Tun Sakaran Marine Park Snorkeling Day Tour from Semporna Town

07:45 am: Pick up from your hotel in Semporna.

08.30 am: Register at the office, and you will take your snorkeinng gears and get ready for the Tun Sakaran Marine Park Snorkeling Day Tour from Semporna.

09.00 am: Depart to Bohey Dulang Island . Bohey Dulang has a hiking trail going up the 353 meters peak, winding around the island to its peak. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the top. After meeting sea gypsies, it was now time to go for hiking in Bohey Dulang, Sabah. We were doing a kind of island hopping in Sabah. Let me tell you, one of the most interesting places in Sabah is Bohey Dulang in Tun Sakaran Marine Park, Semporna Sabah.

If not for anything else, Bohey Dulang island should be visited for spectacular views like this.

The 650 metre steep hike up this island and I had a breath-taking view of a circular coral reef fringe which is actually a sea-filled volcanic crater. The corals reminded me of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia .

Along with Bodgaya, the biggest island in TSMP ( Tun Sakaran Marine Park ), Bohey Dulang is an island with a hill and is formed by the remnants of an ancient volcano. Both the islands are separated by a shallow channel.

The crater which formed these islands is now a large, 25m deep majestic lagoon with aqua-coloured seawater. Just below the water is a long stretch of coral reef. This stunning place looks so surreal that it’s hard to believe unless you see it yourself. I am told, on clear days you can also see the shoreline of Semporna town.

About Bohey Dulang Island

In 2004, Bohey Dulang , with seven other islands, was gazetted as ‘Tun Sakaran Marine Park’ (TSMP) by the Sabah Government. Like any other folklore, Bohey Dulang also has a story.

As per the legends, there lived a beautiful princess named Salamia in nearby Bum-Bum Island. A notorious Sultan from the southern Philippines wanted to marry her. So her family hid her in Bohey Dulang, to avoid a forced marriage.

However, she vanished a few days later and believed to be hidden by the spirits of this island and turned into a fairy. Even today, local people say they can hear Princess Salamia singing and her dog barking during the night of full moon. Occasionally, she is seen walking around the island.

The name Bohey Dulang is a combination of two words in Bajau language. Bohi (bohey) meaning water and dulang meaning pools or depressions. On the eastern side of the island, there are several oval rock pools, small waterfalls and main freshwater streams which might be referring to the name Bohey Dulang.

The locals say these pools are a source of drinking water for Princess Salamia. As per a documented report, a large cave of around 40 M high and over 20 M long is also situated on the east side of the island. Could it be the home of Princess Salamia? 🙂

Hiking in Bohey Dulang

Though the hike is only around 650 M through the forest, it could be quite tough for those who are not used to hiking. Nonetheless, we would highly recommend you to do this because the view from top is totally worth the hike. The peak presents an overwhelming view of the neighbouring islands and reefs of many hues of blue and green. The high cliff are made of dark grey rocks which are actually volcanic rocks of Pliocene and Quaternary period.

The hike is steep and the hike time is between 25 to 40 minutes depending on your physical fitness. Do not rush lest you’ll be out of breath soon. The climb can become more challenging after rain, because some areas are bound to be slippery and muddy. We would suggest you to wear proper walking shoes with good grip, flip-flops are strictly a no-no. A bottle of drinking water can save you from getting dehydrated. It’s humid in the forest and quite hot on the peak.

Bohey Dulang hiking trail has two routes; one for climbing up and another for coming down.

There are ropes, handrails, steps made of wooden planks, on the route to make your climb easier but most of the time it’s soil and rocky path you’ll be walking on. I was grabbing the small thin tree trunks along the trail for support. Thanks to the guides who were walking along, my hike looked very easy. My advice, just go slow and you can make it quite comfortably. Many old Chinese women were also going up.

This is a must visit attraction if you are planning your Borneo holidays. Do include it in your Semporna / Tun Sakaran Marine Park itinerary. Travelling to Semporna island cluster is never a dull moment. In Malay, I can say, “ tempat menarik di semporna ”. 😀

What other things to do in Bohey Dulang

While you’re there, there are many things to do in Bohey Dulang. We have listed below a few of them.

Hiking Hike to the top of Bohey Dulang Peak and while you take the arduous journey, get rewarded by variety of tropical flora and probably fauna too. Splendid view of aqua blue lagoon awaits you.

Snorkeling/ Diving Since the region has best of corals and marine life, snorkeling is a fun activity and is quite popular here. There are plenty of dive operators and resorts that organize diving and snorkeling trips to Bohey Dulang.

Bird-watching In 1933, Pulau Bohey Dulang was declared a bird sanctuary, a status that was revoked decades later in 1978 to make way for establishment of the marine park. But even today, it’s a paradise for birdwatchers where a total of 48 species including Metallic Pigeon, black-naped fruit doves, Nicobar Pigeon, babblers, partridges, owls, and Pied hornbills freely flock the area.

Wildlife Wildlife does not always mean lions and tigers. Besides birds, long-tailed macaque and otter also live on Bohey Dulang but very few in number. And yes, there is no leech even though it’s a forest. 😀

Giant Clam and Marine Invertebrate Hatchery There are also Giant Clams and Invertebrate Hatchery (GCIH) Giant Clam Hatchery where rare giant clams are bred.  This gives the local community an opportunity to pursue in aquaculture that turn out to be an alternative livelihood program.

Bajau Laut (Sea Gypsies) settlements The island is also home to Sea Gypsies, locally known as the Bajau Laut. They inhabit the islands of Bohey Dulang and Bodgaya. Their nomadic and water-bound lifestyle is a subject of interest to ordinary tourists as well as anthropologists. However, tourists are advised not to entertain them in any manner.

Are there any tours for Bohey Dulang

There are day tours as well as 2-day-1-night trips available either from Kota Kinabalu or the nearby island where you may choose to stay in your pakej sabah (Sabah Package). The operators will arrange the land / boat transfer, permit, lunch, island tour and snorkeling/diving gears for you.

How to get to Bohey Dulang or Getting to Bohey Dulang

How to go to Tawau: Tawau is well connected with other towns of Malaysia and neighboring countries. There are direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Singapore and other towns to Tawau.

Tawau to Semporna: Getting from Tawau to Semporna and back is easy and there are several ways to commute using public and private transportation. Bus, Airport Taxi or Minivan are available and you may use them as per your convenience.  

Bohey Dulang can be reached :

• From Semporna to Bohey Dulang: Around 35 minutes by speedboat.
• From Mataking and Pom Pom Island: About 20 minutes.
• From Mabul island to Bohey Dulang: Around 1.5 hours.

What are the Tips for Bohey Dulang

• Visitors are required to get a park permit before entering the island. Your tour operators will help you. There is also a small information centre that displays some of the wildlife in the surrounding waters of the island.
• The hike to the peak is a bit arduous. Wear comfortable closed toe shoes with good grip. You can also rent the shoes for RM 5.
• Bring a bottle of water to avoid getting dehydrated.
• Bring back your trash (empty bottle, cigarette buds etc) while coming down.
• Toilets are available only at the start of the trail. No western toilets, only squat toilets.
• There’s no restaurant. Bring your own food, snacks and water for the trip. You can spend a good few hours at the island for hiking and/or snorkelling and diving.
• It is possible to walk around the island at low tide by following the narrow fringe of beach. However, in some places one has to scramble over rocks or vegetation. Don’t go alone, take a guide.

What is the best time to visit Bohey Dulang

The best time to visit Bohey Dulang in Sabah is from February to April . Then from August-September .

Whoa. I actually said “whoa” out loud when looking at the views during your hike in Bohey Dulang, Sabah, Malaysia. The views of the other volcanic islands in the entire state park are so awesome and the water surrounding Bohey Dulang looks amazing as well. During your tour was there time allocated to swim in the other rock pools or waterfalls that define Bohey Dulang?

These are wonderful colors in this region. Yes, there’s a time frame since you can’t stay on the island, you have to go back before it gets dark or has high tides.

This area is stunningly beautiful! Lots to explore BUT I would want to do all my hiking in the early morning because I have a feeling it gets very hot there! No matter as there is lots of water to cool off in!

I can certainly see why you would hike up a 650m steep hill. The views were certainly stunning. Interesting to read that there are different paths to go up and come down. But good that there are some aids to help with the hike. The water looks so inviting. We would definitely want to try scuba diving in Bohey Dulang.

Oh, that circular coral reef fringe of Bohey Dulang looks gorgeous. Definitely worth a hike! The story about the princess Salamia from Bum-Bum Island is so lovely. And the fact that waterfalls and pools are connected to the legend adds to the atmosphere, I’m sure. No wonder that she was turned into a fairy. In these surroundings, it’s like nothing less than surreal would be sufficient. 🙂

The hike to Bohey Dulang Is just so worth it. The views from the top are breathtaking and it looks like a dreamland. The aqua colored seawater is just so unreal. On clear days the shoreline of Semporna town will surely add more drama to the pictures.

Bohey Dulang

Bohey Dulang is the second-largest island among the Tun Sakaran Marine Park archipelago. Bohey Dulang is a trekkers’ and birdwatchers’ favorite, offering fantastic views from its 353m peak. Birds are aplenty on the island. Is it possible to walk around the island at low tide on the beach.

The island is 23km away from Semporna and has a superficy of 313 hectares.

The islands are part of an extinct volcanic crater what are now forming a beautiful lagoon. The lagoon is open on its southern side but the crater rim on that side extends into a long coral reef. A thin channel separates Bohey Dulang from Pulau Bodgaya, which is the largest island in the group.

Small rock pools, fed by waterfalls, dot the eastern side of the island. These are 2 to 3 metres across in size and are connected to each other through a stream.

Completing this picture of natural beauty is the island’s inhabitants who are Sea Gypsies living in and working from within their boats. Their unique equation with water has been of much cultural interest to visitors from all over the world.

How is the Bird Watching in Bohey Dulang?

In the past, the island was categorized as a bird. Since 2004, it is now part of a protected a marine park ( TSMP ). The island is home to a variety of birds like pied hornbills, partridges, owls, fruits doves, babblers, metallic pigeons, ground-living scrub fowls, and many more, making it a paradise for bird lovers.

How to Hike up Bohey Dulang for the view?

Bohey Dulang has a hiking trail going up the 353 meters peak, winding around the island to its peak. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the top. Climbing across it can be very rewarding because of the unique flora and fauna that you can enjoy on the way.

Besides the colourful birds, the island has got monkeys (long-tailed macaque), and rare plants that grow on volcanic rocks. From the end of the trail at the top, trekkers can see the crater-lagoon, surrounded by the islands of Bodgaya, Bohey Dulang and Tetagan.

Where is the Giant Clam Hatchery?

The island has a Giant Clam and Marine Invertebrate Hatchery that breeds rare species of giant clams. Besides this, active seaweed farming also goes on here.

Are there Bajau Laut (Sea Gypsies)?

The Sea Gypsies, locally known as the Bajau Laut, inhabit the islands of Bohey Dulang and Bodgaya. Their nomadic and water-bound lifestyle is a subject of interest to ordinary tourists as well as anthropologists.

• Sneakers or hiking boots are COMPULSORY for hiking. Sandals, flip-flops, and croc slippers are strictly not allowed. Sabah Parks has the right to ban hikers with improper shoewear. 
• The shoe rental kiosk is no longer operating, so please remember to bring your own shoes.
• In case of rain and the cancellation of the Bohey Dulang hiking, we will swap the activity to a snorkelling session.
• Due to the limited number of rangers available, the waiting time can be 1-2 hours, depending on the time it took for the other groups to return to the foothill.
• Children below 6 years old are not allowed to join the hiking activity.
• Please be ready at the boat departure point at 8:00AM.

Bohey Dulang of Semporna Islands Park

My urge to visit Bohey Dulang Island started with a photo seven years ago. “Nice painting!” I praised a big drawing of islands hanging in the office of my friend. “Actually it’s a PHOTO taken in Sabah,” he replied. I was stunned. The islands look so surreal, such place doesn’t even seem exist. After some lookup in local bookstore, I found that it is the photo of Tun Sakaran Marine Park (or Semporna Islands Park ) taken by Michael Patrick Wong.

Tun Sakaran Marine Park (TSMP) is located off Semporna at east coast of Sabah and comprises of eight islands – Bohey Dulang, Bodgaya, Tetagan, Sebangkat, Selakan, Maiga, Sibuan and Mantabuan, covering a total land and sea areas of 350 km?.

TSMP is the largest marine park in Sabah (but will be superseded by 1-million-hectare Tun Mustapha Marine Park soon). I was also told that you can get a fascinating view of TSMP (they call it one of the most beautiful views of Sabah) from the peak of Bohey Dulang Island .

Every now and then I contacted some travel agents for a trip to this park, but they all wanted me to charter the whole boat (for nearly a thousand bucks) if I traveled solo, so the plan was held indefinitely until last month Edward from Borneo Star Cruise texted me, “bro, I’ll visit Bohey Dulang tomorrow. You want to join?” Of course I was more than happy to tag along!

About Bohey Dulang Island

Bohey Dulang (or Boheydulong, Bohaydulong) is the second largest island (size: 313 hectares) of TSMP and about 23 Km away from Semporna. Legend says there lives a beautiful princess named Salamia from Bum-Bum Island. Her family hid her on Bohey Dulang, to avoid a forced marriage by a notorious Sultan from the southern Philippines.

However, she vanished a few days later and believed to be hidden by the spirits of this island and turned into a fairy. Even nowadays, local people say they can hear Princess Salamia singing and her dog barking during the night of full moon. Occasionally, she is seen walking around the island.

The name Bohey Dulang is derived from bohi (bohey) meaning water and dulang meaning pools or depressions in Bajau language. This may refer to series of oval rock pools, roughly 2-3 m across, along the small waterfalls and main freshwater stream on the eastern side of the island.

People say these pools are a source of drinking water for Princess Salamia. A document reports a large cave (40 M high and over 20 M long) is situated on the east side of this island too. Could it be the home of Princess Salamia? I wonder.

Day Trip to Bohey Dulang

Ok, back to my tour. Edward and I were taking a boat from Semporna town around 11am. The weather was good and we approached TSMP in 15 minutes. The Best Time to visit Bohey Dulang are from February to April (the dry months). If you visit during wetter months like July, August, December and January, your trip would have higher chance of being spoiled by heavy rainstorm of monsoon seasons, or not, depending on your luck. The park would close the climbing trail if the weather doesn’t seem good (even if it’s cloudy and no rain).

Hiking to the peak

You need to ascend a 800-Meter nature trail to reach the peak with a height of 353 Meters, which normally takes 40 minutes. The climb can be a bit challenging after rain, because some steep areas will become slippery and muddy. Do wear proper walking shoe, I strongly advise against flip-flop . The park will make it compulsory to rent a pair of hiking shoes from them for RM5, if you don’t wear the proper shoes. It’s warm and humid in the forest and hot on the peak, so please bring some drinking water.

The Most Beautiful Seaview of Sabah

On top of Bohey Dulang, you can have a bird-eye view of the sapphire-colored Bodgaya Lagoon embraced by emerald forest of three central islands (Bodgaya, Bohey Dulang and Tetagan) , the only islands in Sabah made of volcanic rock and part of the Sulu volcanic chain. In fact, the lagoon, which is about 6.5 Km across, is a crater of an ancient volcano erupted 2.5 million years ago .

How to get there

A day trip to Bohey Dulang is possible even if you stay in Kota Kinabalu City (KK). Just take a 50-min morning flight from KK to Tawau City, upon arrival get a 1-hour land transport to Semporna town, then the park is only 20 minutes away by boat. The earliest flight to Tawau departs at 7:25am, and last flight back to KK is at 7:45pm. Both direct routes are served by Malaysia Airlines and available every day. You may use Google Flight to check out the latest prices and other flight alternatives. Please note you need a permit from Sabah Parks prior to visit the island.

Other Activities

Besides sightseeing at Bohey Dulang, there are a few other activities you can do around Tun Sakaran Marine Park (TSMP).

1. Visit Giant Clam Nursery

Due to overfishing, giant clams are highly endangered. TSMP is a refuge for seven species of giant clams ( Tridacnidae and Hippopusporcellanus species).

2. Snorkeling & Diving

TSMP is located in Coral Triangle (a.k.a. Amazon of the Sea), which supports one of the richest marine ecological zones in Malaysia. 528 species of coral reef fish are found in the park, much more than Sipadan Island (409), Redang (209) and Tioman (233). Teeming with over 320 species of hard and soft corals, and variety of sea creatures such as eagle rays, barracuda, turtles and nudibranchs, this park is getting well-known as a scuba diving and snorkeling site.

3. Photography

You are wrong if you think that TSMP is only about nature. Many world-renowned photographers have visited this park for human interest shots here and won some international awards. Around the islands, there are about 10 villages of Bajau Laut (a.k.a. Sea Gypsies ) people living either in temporary shacks or in their boats. They maintain very traditional lifestyles and possibly the only nomadic seafarers left in the world.

Hi Vojta, yes you can rent a boat in Semporna for the island tour, but be careful of the quality of the service and you may not be insured.

Hi Robert, it’s possible and I had done it. Did you book the tour via Borneo Star Cruise? The earliest flight and land transfer allow you to reach Semporna before 9:40am. If you go without tour, it could be more expensive if you go alone. And there is no such thing as “Main Boat”..

Bohey Dulang Island 

Bohey Dulang is one of the 9 islands of Tun Sakaran Marine Park famed for its hiking trail with majestic views of surrounding islands and aquamarine waters. The 353m hike to the top takes about 45mins to complete.    

Sibuan Island 

Sibuan Island is home to communities of the nomadic Bajau Laut or 'Sea Gypsies’ whom you may come across whilst exploring the island. Sibuan is popular amongst divers and snorkelers as well as non-swimmers who can relax in the sun on its beautiful sandy beach.

Continue to Sibuan Island, just next door, where you can relax and recharge on its sandy beach or enjoy a bit of snorkeling from the shoreline. Check with your guide about exploring the local Bajau Laut (‘Sea Gypsies’) village, where you can find fishermen selling fresh coconut juice. 

Return to Semporna town.

Mataking & Timba Timba Island Explorer

Meet at Semporna Jetty . Jump onboard the speedboat to your first stop Timba Timba Island, an approximate 40 mins journey.  

After suiting up and a quick briefing, you’re ready to begin your snorkel session in Timba Timba's crystal-clear tropical waters where you may be lucky to see resting nurse sharks, barracudas and different types of eels.  

Enjoy your lunch break with a packed lunch.

The next stop is Mataking Island, where you can enjoy some of Sabah’s best marine life in the form of both large schooling fish and incredible macro life, with two more boat snorkeling sessions.

Boat transfer back to Semporna town.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

• Kindly prepare RM50 in cash to cover the Ranger Fee at Bohey Dulang. This fee applies to groups of 1-6 pax. 
• Sneakers or hiking boots are COMPULSORY for hiking. Sandals, flip-flops, and croc slippers are strictly not allowed. Sabah Parks has the right to ban hikers with improper shoewear. 
• The shoe rental kiosk is no longer operating, so please remember to bring your own shoes.
• In case of rain and the cancellation of the Bohey Dulang hiking, we will swap the activity to a snorkelling session.
• Due to the limited number of rangers available, the waiting time can be 1-2 hours, depending on the time it took for the other groups to return to the foothill.
• Children below 6 years old are not allowed to join the hiking activity.
• Please be ready at the boat departure point at 8:00AM. 
• Boat journey to the Island(s) may not be suitable for individuals who have any of the following conditions but not limited to: heart or lung conditions, recent surgery, back or spinal surgery, back problems/injury/fracture, arthritis, osteoporosis or other similar spinal/pelvic diseases.   
• Pregnant women are also not recommended as the boat ride may be bumpy depending on the sea condition. If you are having similar issues as above, kindly consult your physician before you enroll in this activity.  
• Please do not bring valuables as there are no lockers on the islands.  
• If we deem your snorkeling skills or attitude may bring harm to the marine life or other guests, the crew has the right to stop you from participating in this activity.  
• It is strictly prohibited to remove, pick up, step on, or destroy any marine life during the trip.  
• Do not snorkel separately from the group and follow the crew’s instructions. Failure to do so will result in the crew stopping you from participating in the activity and no refunds will be made.

15 Best Day Trips from Moscow

Moscow, the sprawling Russian capital, is a city that’s both full of history and contemporary culture.

This is the centre of the Russian world, a city that armies have invaded, where nations have clashed and where revolutions have played out through the centuries.

It’s a city on the fringe of Europe, but a place that is very much at the heart of European history and politics, and for visitors, it can be a complex and enthralling destination to visit.

As much as there is to see and to do in the city itself, there is just as much to experience on day trips from Moscow too.

While Russia is undoubtedly an expansive country, and many of the better-known cities such as St Petersburg or Volgograd are hundreds and hundreds of miles away, there are many more unknown and unusual destinations to visit within a few hours’ drive of the capital.

Immerse yourself in the Russian countryside, visit war memorials, battlefields and the lavish estates of the former Russian nobility. There are rural villages, grand Orthodox Monasteries and the chance to see Russian life outside of the city first-hand.

Here are the best day trips from Moscow.

Located just an hour north of the Moscow city centre, Korolev is an area that is almost a suburb of the expansive capital, but has retained its own unique identity. During the Soviet era, this was one of the most important industrial areas in the country, because this was the base for Soviet Space Exploration.

During World War II, the factories here produced anti-tank guns that helped keep the Soviet Union in the fight. After Germany was defeated, the factories and research centres began to focus on space.

The city became a ‘Science City’ as skilled workers from across the Union came here to settle and to launch the space programme. It became one of the more affluent areas in the country, and today, that distinction can still be seen on the streets and in the buildings.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, Korolev remained the headquarters of Russian space travel and still hosts Russian Mission Control.

2. Borodino

A two-hour drive to the west of Moscow is the battlefield of Borodino. This is a place that is revered in Russian history, and which perhaps should be much more well-known in wider European history too, because this is where the infamous French General Napolean Bonaparte fought the Russians during his invasion in 1812.

Although the French won the Battle of Borodino and went on to capture Moscow, this was the beginning of the end for Napolean, as he went on to be ravaged by the Russian Winter and was forced to retreat soon after.

Just outside the small village of Borodino is the green and grassy field where the battle was fought. On top of a substantial hill is a lasting monument to the important event.

Located to the south-east of Moscow is the city of Kolomna, which in comparison to the Russian capital is very much a small-town escape.

This is one of the oldest Russian cities in the region and there is a long and intriguing history to be discovered in the museums and monasteries.

Interestingly, the city was off-limits for much its tenure under the Soviet Union, because it was the site of important weapons factories. It was only in 1994 that the city was opened up and even now it is still very much unknown to tourists.

Kolomna makes for a great day trip, and you can explore the restored medieval walls, and the city’s very own Kremlin, a huge fortress which dates back to the 16th century.

4. Zvenigorod

Zvenigorod is as little as an hour’s drive away from Moscow city centre, and the small town makes for a pleasant break from the capital.

Zvenigorod is an old and historic place, with a history dating back almost a thousand years.

There are some beautiful monasteries to visit as well as the unusual Museum of Russian Desserts, where you can sample and explore this aspect of the local culinary culture.

Zvenigorod was also a town where the world-renowned Anton Checkov once lived, and you can visit a museum here that’s dedicated to his life.

5. Sergiyev Posad

North of the capital is the city of Sergiyev Posad, which is one of the few well-known tourist destinations in the surrounding region.

You will find this as a suggested stop on most travel itineraries to Moscow, and many tour companies include this as part of their excursions around the city because this city is home to the famous Trinity Lavra of St Sergius.

This is a huge Russian Orthodox Monastery which has been here for hundreds of years, and continues to be run by monks who look after the revered tomb of St Sergius, who was laid to rest here.

It’s an important pilgrimage place for Orthodox Christians and an important stop for tourists.

6. Kubinka Tank Museum

Outside Moscow, you can find an unusual museum which will give you a truly ‘Russian’ experience.

The Kubinka Tank Museum was once the location of a Red Army tank testing ground. Now, it’s been turned into a huge museum that showcases every conceivable type of armoured vehicle.

7. Arkhangelskoye Estate

The Arkhangelskoye Estate was built on the outskirts of Moscow and dates back to the late 18th century when it was constructed by a Rusian aristocratic family.

For over a century, it was the domain of the nobility, until of course, the Russian Revolution and the advent of Communism swept the family that owned the estate out of the country.

The estate was opened to the public by the Communists and turned into a museum, which it remains today.

Restoration work after the fall of the Soviet Union saved the Arkhangelskoye Estate from falling into disrepair and kept the grounds and the grand palace as a lavish example of pre-Revolution Russia.

8. Yaroslavl

Yaroslavl is found a few hours to the north of Moscow and makes for a long day trip from the city. It’s worth the journey to experience one of the region’s most popular tourist destinations.

Yaroslavl is found on the banks of the River Volga and has been a historically important city throughout Russian history. The city has even been the capital of the country at various points.

You can explore the many museums and monasteries to learn more about this intriguing destination.

9. Rostov Veliky

Just south of Yaroslavl is the small but culturally rich town of Rostov Veliky.

This is another important site in Russian history, as the town can date its origins back to early Slavic settlement around Moscow.

Lake Nero is a beautiful and expansive lake near the town, fringed on one side by an ancient fortress, giving Rostov Veliky a wonderful atmosphere to experience.

10. Vladimir

Two hours east of Moscow is another historic Russian city that is very much on the regional tourist trail.

It makes for a great day trip from the capital because Vladimir dates back to the 12th century and is full of Russian history and culture.

This was one of the first Russian capitals and it still contains many beautiful medieval buildings that are hundreds of years old.

The small town of Suzdal is just a few kilometres north of the city of Vladimir.

The town is part of a fantastic UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses the historic sites from both Suzdal and Vladimir.

The town was founded in medieval times and also acted for a time as an early capital for Russian kingdoms in the region.

Klin is a fairly unassuming town to the north-west of Moscow, but it’s worth visiting to see one particular sight, the house of Tchaikovsky.

The famous 19th-century composer spent his final days here and wrote his very last piece of work in the house in Klin. It is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

It’s a grand estate and an interesting insight into pre-Soviet, Russian culture.

13. Melikova

A short trip past the Moscow suburbs will bring you to another famous estate, the house of renowned Russian writer and playwright Anton Checkov.

By the town of Checkov, which was renamed in his honour, the museum of Melikova will take you on a journey through his life and indeed, what the lives of many of his contemporary fellow Russians would have been like too.

14. Gorki Leninskie

On the southern edge of Moscow is Gorki Leniniskie.

This grand estate was once the realm of Russian nobles, but after the Russian Revolution it was personally taken over by Vladimir Lenin who turned it into his own home.

He spent much of his last years here, and after his death, the estate became a shrine to his life and legacy.

Today it still remains an interesting museum, and is still in many ways a shrine to communism.

15. Losiny Ostrov National Park

Losiny Ostrov National Park is a huge area of protected land that is found right on the edge of Moscow and is even surrounded on several sides by suburbs of the city.

It’s unusual to find such a large national park so close to a capital and it’s easy to spend the day exploring this veritable wilderness of beautiful scenery and plentiful wildlife.
