United kingdom.

Regal. Charming. Scenic.

Comprised of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the United Kingdom definitely has dozens of reasons worth leaving home for. Mountains, valleys, hills and dales, forests and gardens, oh and no less than 25 UNESCO World Heritage sites scattered throughout, are but a few. You will find a slew of cathedrals, castles, palaces and country houses spanning history. Centuries of inspiring the world, influencing the arts, and forming natural beauty have developed this land into one great nation.

Destination Must-See's

UK ms1

A world in a city is a common way to describe the metropolis of London, the capital of England. A cultural melting pot of over 230 nationalities, London is the financial, political and cultural capital of the UK. It is booming with activity and bursting with sightseeing treasures. You’ll find historic highlights from the haunting Tower of London to the ornate Buckingham Palace and more modern attractions such as the world-famous Harrods department store and the towering London Eye.

UK ms2

The capital city and second most populous in Scotland, Edinburgh has been recognized for its historic and cultural attractions. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK after London. Great shopping, historic architecture and great Scottish whisky are just part of its allure. Its greatest draw is Edinburgh Castle. This sprawling medieval castle and fortress sits atop Castle Rock in the city center, dominating Edinburgh’s skyline.

UK ms3

Giant’s Causeway:

At the foot of the basalt cliffs on the coast of Northern Ireland’s County of Antrim lies the stunning Giant’s Causeway. Travelers flock to this UNESCO World Heritage site to experience the 40,000 massive dark columns rising from the sea. The natural phenomena has sparked legends of giants and magic, but its unique geology points to volcanic activity from over 50 million years ago. The Giant’s Causeway is a beautiful sight and the experience of a lifetime.

UK ms4

Cornwall, a region located on a peninsula in southwest England, is comprised of many different towns and villages that feature beautiful beaches and picturesque coastlines. Bordered by the Celtic Sea and the English Channel, one of its most popular towns is St. Ives. This seaside port town just north of Penzance on the coast of the Celtic Sea is known as the art center of West Cornwall and has a sub-tropical feel and beautiful beaches.

Destination Must-Do's

UK md3

England’s Lake District:

Lose yourself in the natural beauty of this mountainous region in northwest England dotted with tranquil lakes. One of the picturesque villages in the region is Grasmere, once home of and inspiration to the romantic poet William Wordsworth. Perhaps you will take a sail on one of the lakes and take in the peaceful backdrop of lush green mountains, serene shorelines and pristine calm waters dotted with tiny islands.

UK md2

Stonehenge:

Walk in the footsteps of so many before you when visiting prehistoric Stonehenge. This mysterious rock formation dates back to the Stone Age and remains one of the world’s most famous sites. Standing in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, Stonehenge is perhaps the most important prehistoric monument in England. The experience of seeing this timeless monument is not to be missed – it will surely be a highlight of your visit.

UK md1

This large, deep freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extends approximately 23 miles southwest of the city of Inverness. Loch Ness is best known for the alleged sightings of the Loch Ness monster. While Loch Ness is not the largest Scottish loch by surface area, it is the largest by volume, with its deepest point at 755 feet. Along the shore, you will find the ruins of Urquhart Castle. This once mighty site rests on the headwaters of Loch Ness and dates back as far as the 13th century.

UK md4

Prepare to step back in time in the English countryside. The Cotswolds are roughly 25 miles across and 90 miles long, stretching from Stratford-upon-Avon to Bath. The region is known for its small towns and villages with homes made from golden colored Cotswold stone and grass roofs that sit among lush greenery and rolling hills. Stratford-upon-Avon is perhaps its most famous town. Lying along the River Avon, it’s famed for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare, one of the world’s great playwrights. Be sure to make a trip to see the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Expert Advice

diana

Think “go to the right.” It is their natural flow of traffic even when it comes to walking. It is important to not only look both ways when crossing the street, but also when on an escalator, stand to the right. When walking down the street, stay alert and follow the flow – to the right.

UK e2

Expect to be offered tea, a lot. The British love their tea and not only during afternoon tea, any time for any reason. But you should know there is a “proper” way to drink it. The rules are – sit up straight, do not blow on it, take small sips with your pinky down, and put the cup on the saucer between sips. Now you are prepared to sip away.

UK e3

Bring a raincoat and umbrella, as it rains one out of three days in the UK. It does vary from region to region, but generally speaking, they are important items to have on hand at all times.

"What is there to not love about England. Real life castles, Princes and Princesses, stunning scenery, and historic streets lined with lively pubs everywhere you go!”

Aryan, Travel Director

Admire the British capital from the London Eye

Watch London unfurl from the iconic 135-metre height of the London Eye. The unmatched views extend in every direction, reaching Buckingham Palace, the river Thames and the famed clock tower of the Palace of Westminster. All London’s highlights in one peaceful, 30-minute rotation.

Take in the views of Britain's Lake District

Delve into Britain’s natural wonders and take in the panorama of rolling hills, rocky mountains and glittering waters of the Lake District. Abounding in outdoor opportunities from cruises to hilltop walks, you'll find serenity in this national park resting between Leeds and Glasgow.

Visit the Roman baths in Bath

Turn back the clock 2,000 years at the remarkably preserved remains of the Roman Baths. Still flowing with steaming, geothermally heated water, the ancient stone pavements reveal the culture behind the simple daily task of washing. Let time stand still staring at a spring filled with 12,000 Roman coins.

Enjoy the guided tour of Liverpool

Sink into the nostalgia of the Beatles, cruise along the Mersey River and sample real ale at the Albert Docks. A visit to Liverpool is an invitation to uncover the many layers of British culture; the UK's fifth largest city means more than the passion of its football club.

See the Stonehenge's stone monoliths

Southwest England’s soil is rich with mystery. Stand in the shadows of Stonehenge’s stone monoliths and let your imagination be sparked by the secrets of this 5,000-year history. Weighing up to 30 tonnes each, the weight of history will leave its mark on you.

Our top 5 things to do in England

Mysterious stone monoliths and preserved ancient baths prove there is so much more to see beyond the limits of London city. Let Trafalgar turn the pages of the history book that is England.

The British Museum

The British Museum is a ticket to relics that reveal some two million years of human history. Feel small standing beneath the colossal presence of Rameses II and contrast the myth and reality of Troy with the graphic world of Manga. This London highlight will take you on a journey of time travel.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum takes you on an unfathomable discovery of the formation of the solar system and its path to the present. Trace the origin of our species under the shade of a T. rex and glimpse rare meteorites straight from the surface of Mars. If this doesn’t shake you, the earthquake simulator most certainly will.

Victoria and Albert

The Victoria and Albert Museum is an encounter with the very best of human creativity in almost every medium. Here you will design your own bioplastic bag, step behind the creative lens of Christian Dior and take a literal walk in history’s shoes admiring a 2,000 strong collection spanning 3,000 years.

Best museums in England

A cultural epicentre of the planet steeped in royal heritage, the museums of England sparkle like the Crown Jewels. Let Trafalgar guide you through the very best the region has to offer.

Fish & Chips

It’s hard to separate the partnership of fish 'n' chips. Try this traditional meal both from a gourmet restaurant and a local 'chippie' wrapped in newspaper. Always with lashings of salt and vinegar on top.

Sunday Roast

Embrace the traditional English Sunday lunch with roast meats, a side of vegetables and an indulgent topping of gravy. The joy of this simple culinary experience is best served in a traditional English pub complete with football on the screen and a few stouts.

Full English breakfast

The full English breakfast is a requisite of a trip to England. A hearty plate piled with fried bacon, grilled tomatoes, buttered toast, mushrooms, eggs, beans, and black puddingis hard to resist.

Best food in England

Food is at the heart of every journey when you travel to England. This is a country of warm and hearty meals, our trips will show you the very best of it.

What to pack for England

People packing for a tour

With a high chance of experiencing four seasons in one day, an umbrella is a must when visiting England, both for rainy days and occasions when the sun beams down.

Digital maps

It's always good to have a backup of digital maps on standby when you're out exploring in your own time. Download them prior to your trip so you can reach them even when your phone is offline.

Travel adaptor

Though many hotels will have adaptors available for use, being prepared with your own will ensure you're always charged and ready to go.

A good book

With a seemingly infinite list of parks found in England, don't forget to pack a novel and immerse yourself in a good book should the occasion arise.

With days full of adventure and numerous souvenirs tempting your strolls, a day pack will ensure your hands always remain free. Split the weight across your back with a double strap bag for extra comfort.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and toiletry bottles.

For a tiny island, Great Britain has made an enormous impact on the world. As Hugh Grant’s character said in the classic film Love Actually , “We may be a small country, but we’re a great one too. The country of Shakespeare, Churchill, the Beatles, Sean Connery, Harry Potter, David Beckham’s right foot. David Beckham’s left foot…”

A tour of Great Britain—the isle comprised of England, Scotland, and Wales—and its United Kingdom neighbor, Northern Ireland, allows you to experience this sovereign state’s full historical and cultural impact.

Gaze over the iconic capital city from the London Eye, watch the Changing of the Guard in front of Buckingham Palace, listen to the tolling of Big Ben and delight in the world's most celebrated garden show, the Chelsea Flower Show .

Get out of the city to the picturesque Yorkshire Dales and Lake District, or visit Shakespeare’s home in medieval Stratford-upon-Avon . Step back in time when you wander the monoliths of Stonehenge and follow the Roman ruins of Hadrian’s Wall.

Head north to Scotland to stare into the mysterious waters of Loch Ness , play a round of golf at the Old Course at St. Andrews, learn about shipbuilding in Glasgow, and explore the dramatic landscapes of the Highlands and Isle of Skye. If you visit in August, you can attend the famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in front of Edinburgh Castle.

Wales & Northern Ireland

In Wales , you can visit Gothic Cardiff, discover Celtic culture, and admire spectacular Snowdonia National Park . Across the Straits of Moyle, discover Northern Ireland with a visit to Belfast, the walled city of Londonderry , and the legendary Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim.

Essential Britain & Ireland

Liz Ryan is an excellent guide and knows her history of Britain very well. The bus was very comfortable and even had USB ports for charging. And the free bottles of water, as needed, were greatly appreciated. All hotels were very clean with very good provided breakfasts and only one could have used a bathroom upgrade. All beds we used appeared to be queen size. We really enjoyed the optional live Irish dancing and show and dinner at "Taylors Three Rock" in Dublin. Perhaps information on the VAT tax and the procedures to get that refunded should be provided to guests before and after arrival. The tour we were on is called a 10 day tour but is actually only 8 days on the bus. We were impressed and feel it was well worth the cost!

We felt there was too many places and not enough time Plymouth was a waste of time and Cardiff.we didnt see any thing of Fort William or Inverness and as for Hadrians wall what a joke !! Group photos at Anne Hathaway cottage but no time to see cottage or gardens .then dropped off at shakespeares birthplace for shops !! Long way to Culloden not to have time to go into the museum. Too many hours at Blarney on a wet day in the woolen mill. But apart from that Rosemary was fantastic Julian great driver took a while to warm... enjoyed our holiday but not one of our better cosmos experiences.

What people love about england, scotland and wales tours.

Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
Fine tour with a lot of nice people from almost all over the world. To us it was a disappointment that the optional tour in Edinburgh with Johnnie Walker experts, advertised in the program, wasn’t available.
Because my original trip was cancelled by Trafalgar to rearrange a new tour was difficult I am giving a little more tolerance as the tourist industry was smashed my amended timetable cost me a lot of money The trip if your a new first trip bus tour user it’s ok far to rushed for us experienced lots 1 hour walk around s. Then bed. ie Liverpool Glasgow I won’t do another bus tour in the UK

From our travelers

York Minster

What a fabulous tour! We saw so much of Great Britain! This tour is great! If you have never traveled to GB or traveled overseas, like us, this is the way to do it. Our tour director was so informative, organized and humorous! The bus driver was excellent and so personable. Everything was taken care of for us. No worries...just fun. Our fellow travelers were wonderful. Meals and hotels were excellent. I would definitely recommend this tour. I look forward to taking another CIE tour in the future.

See what people are saying about this trip

Cie tours customer, previous travel with cie. was excellent with everything.

Enjoy seeing. different places. that had not. seen. before from previous trip. I did with CIEWould. Strongly recommend to people to travel with

Amazing Trip With A Few Hiccups Along the Way

This is my 3rd trip with CIE and there’s a reason why I keep coming back. I chose this itinerary due to the locations that we’d be going (some I’ve done with my last CIE tour and wanted to experience the city again) as well as some of the activities being offered. However once again at the airport it took me a while to find the driver from the airport to the hotel on the day of arrival. This is the second tour in the UK where this has happened and both times I’ve had to contact the company in charge of the driving company to either get a new driver and or find my driver. At this point if I do another tour starting in London I’d rather take my chances with a taxi and or the tube. Another issue was the fact that I had chose this tour due to the Day 11 activities which included the train ride from Goathland Station. It wasn’t until we arrived at our hotel on Day 10 that we were informed that we weren’t doing the train which is one of the main reasons why I had chose this specific tour. On route to Whitby we were told by our tour director that the change to the itinerary had been made in May but nobody on the tour had been made away and instead we went to Castle Howard. For the itinerary, I feel like this one should/needs to be more time in Cardiff. This was my second time there and with this tour I feel like Cardiff Castle shouldn’t be the only place that’s explored in the capital city besides the castle. In Hay-on-Wye we should have more time than an hour, seeing as some of the stores were still closed.

History, Castles, Beachside towns and the English Countryside, loved it all

So much to see and learn. It was a great to experience all the different areas of England. The history, scenery and hospitality was exceptional.

CIE took care of everything, all we needed to do was show up.

12 full days wasn't long enough have to go back and do it all again...

All location stops and attractions visited were worth it and even though the weather wasn't always the best our guide and drive made up for it with commentary and scenic drives.

About The Tour

"WHIP-MA-WHOP -MA-GATE", York's tiniest street, dates from Saxon times and means "neither one thing nor the other". Our "Best in Britain" tour unashamedly defies that description. In Cambridge, York, Chester & Bath you will see some of Britain's best architecture add to this the splendour of historic cathedrals & castles and the "Best in Britain" is what this overnight UK tour indeed offers you.

Visit Cambridge with its historic colleges, well manicured gardens, chapels, courtyards and dining halls, Stamford, a beautiful town developed by the Romans, the Saxons, the Danes and Normans and dramatic Burghley House one of England's greatest Elizabethan houses on your way to York for your first two nights. Circled by imposing Medieval walls York has preserved so much Medieval structure that its centre is like entering a living museum.

Explore the magnificent Peak District, a landscape of moorland, deep green valleys and rough stone crags, where almost every hilltop is marked with prehistoric huts and one or two of the fine Derbyshire houses: Chatsworth, magnificent 17th century home of the Duke of Devonshire, Haddon Hall, or Hardwick Hall, 16th century home of the much married "Bess of Hardwick".

Visit 15th century Little Moreton Hall on your way to Chester for your night's stay. Built by the Romans 2000 years ago Chester has more archaeological and architectural treasures than any other city in Britain. See the well preserved Roman city walls, the fine red sandstone Cathedral, the Roman amphitheatre and the galleried half-timbered tiers of shops known as "The Rows".

On your fourth day visit Stratford-Upon-Avon, the Cotswolds and the world heritage city of Bath - a lively and beautiful city in which to spend the night. Return to London via the pretty village of Lacock, Britain's darkest prehistoric mystery Stonehenge and the cathedral cities of Salisbury and Winchester. Your private tour guide will return you to London or the airport.

Welcome to Hidden Britain Tours

The very best in bespoke, small group, informal, guided tours off the beaten path through the glorious British countryside!

About Hidden Britain Tours

britain tours and more

My good friend Paul and I first had the idea for Hidden Britain Tours back in early 2001.

We had both always enjoyed traveling, especially on the quiet, backroads of the UK, and started the business with a passion for sharing those experiences with others.

We have always believed that traveling is not just about seeing new sights, but about creating lasting memories.

Unfortunately, just a few months after setting the company up, world events overtook us, and the business really never got off the ground as people stopped traveling overseas as much in the wake of 9/11.

Life then intervened and Hidden Britain Tours was put on the back burner.

Forward more than 20 years and, post-pandemic, the travel bug has been re-ignited in people and bespoke travel experiences are, once again, in fashion.

What better time, then, to reintroduce Hidden Britain Tours to the world?

Whether you are a seasoned traveler who has visited the UK on more than one occasion, or whether you are a first time traveler to England's shores, we have the perfect tour/experience for you.

britain tours and more

What makes Hidden Britain Tours so different from the majority of the other tour companies out there?

First off, let's have a look at why we don't call ourselves a chauffeur tour company...

To us, the word chauffeur conjures up images of something rigid, something formal. That's not us, at all!

We prefer to think of Hidden Britain Tours as more of a relaxed, informal jaunt around the country with friends.

You won't find any cookie cutter, one size fits all tours here.

Nor will you find tours that try to cover the whole country in a simple week. That just doesn't make sense to us.

What you WILL find is a variety of fully customizable tours that cater to different interests and preferences. Whether you're interested in history, culture, or nature, we have a tour that's perfect for you.

We have fully customizable itineraries

for the following regions in the UK:

South East of England (Kent and Sussex)

South and Central England

South West of England (Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall)

East Anglia (Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex)

The Peak District, North Wales and Cheshire

Northern England (Yorkshire, Durham, Northumberland & Cumbria)

We can also create itineraries for anywhere else you would like to visit in the UK, as well as bespoke itineraries for selected parts of France, such as Normandy, Brittany, the Dordogne, Burgundy or Provence.

From a minimum of 7 days all the way up to 21 days and beyond, we are knowledgeable and passionate about what we do, and we'll make sure you have a great time.

Your Driver and Tour Guide

I grew up just west of London in an industrial town called Slough, a town which will definitely not be making it onto any of our itineraries. Fortunately, we had so many wonderful places to discover and explore on our doorstep and one of my favorite things growing up was heading out into the countryside for the day in my parent’s old car, discovering new roads, new villages, new adventures. That is what ignited my interested in what would later become my passion.

One of my favorite jobs ever was as a chauffeur in London. While it was always fascinating watching the city go about it's business around me, I never enjoyed anything more than getting out of town and out into the countryside for the day. In my time as a chauffeur, I drove bankers, dignitaries, politicians and a number of famous actors and actresses. Indeed, I may be one of the few people who have driven both Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Professor Dumbeldore (Michael Gambon) as well as Dame Judi Dench, Ian Holm, Heath Ledger, Jason Isaacs, Antonio Banderas and others. That was always a lot of fun.

In many ways, I have been practicing for this business my whole life.

I have never liked being stuck on a major highway when I know I could be meandering down a quiet country road instead.

With Hidden Britain Tours, I'm committed to providing the best possible experience for my customers. I strive to be environmentally responsible, socially conscious, and culturally respectful. I want to leave a positive impact on the places I visit and the people I meet.

Victims of Nazi concentration camps built in British Channel Islands finally being counted

By Holly Williams

April 21, 2024 / 7:00 PM EDT / CBS News

The names Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and Buchenwald are infamous as the scene of atrocities -- concentration camps, run by Adolf Hitler's notorious SS.

But what you may be surprised to learn, as we were, is that two Nazi concentration camps were established on British soil in the Channel Islands, around 80 miles from the British mainland. The islands lie just off the coast of France, became possessions of the English crown around a thousand years ago – and were occupied by Germany for nearly five years during World War II. Even in the United Kingdom many people don't know about the camps -- and as we discovered, exactly what happened there is hotly disputed.

Holly Williams: It's pretty well hidden, isn't it?

Marcus Roberts: Yeah, well, if you--

Holly Williams: It's all overgrown.

Marcus Roberts: If you didn't know how to get here, you wouldn't easily stumble across it.

Marcus Roberts: This was a sort of back entrance…

There's not much left of the Third Reich's Lager Sylt concentration camp… on the windswept island of Alderney -- about three miles long and one and a half wide – nature is gradually swallowing up its crumbling concrete walls.

Holly Williams: And the camp's up here…--

Marcus Roberts: These take you straight into the-- the camp.

Holly Williams: Wow.

Marcus Roberts is an Oxford-educated amateur historian who runs heritage tours. He's spent years researching this forgotten chapter in British history.

Marcus Roberts:  So undoubtedly if you wanted to put-- a pin on the map, you could say, "This is where the Holocaust happened on British sovereign territory."

Marcus Roberts and Holly Williams

When Germany invaded France in 1940, the British government calculated that the Channel Islands had no strategic value – and gave them up without a fight. Nearly all of the residents of Alderney decided to evacuate before the German troops arrived. On the empty island, the Germans set up two concentration camps – as well as labor camps. They brought in prisoners of war and forced laborers to build giant fortifications that still survive today -- part of Hitler's Atlantic wall to protect against Allied attack. A minority of them were Jewish – others were from Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and Spain.

Holly Williams: I understand this was called the Tunnel of Death?

Marcus Roberts: Yes. It was notorious in the memory of prisoners. On two occasions, they were forced to cram in here in an apparent rehearsal for their own death.

After the war, in 1945, the British military investigated the camps, and put the death toll on Alderney in the low hundreds. Some of those who lost their lives were buried under this plot of land. But Marcus Roberts and others argue that more than 10,000 must have died on the island – based on controversial calculations about the size of the labor force needed to build the fortifications. Roberts told us it's because he's Jewish that he's determined to count all of the dead.

Marcus Roberts: There is the-- the Jewish instinct to, you know, leave no one behind

Holly Williams: You're trying to make sure that all the Jewish dead are counted?

Marcus Roberts: Remembered. If you don't remember a life, it's as if they've never lived at all.

Most academics dispute Roberts' estimate of the death toll, but partly as a result of those disagreements, last year the British government appointed a team of researchers to comb through archives across Europe, and more accurately count the number of prisoners who died on Alderney. Dr. Gilly Carr -- an archaeologist at Cambridge University -- is coordinating the review.

Holly Williams: Why is this just a document search, not a dig?

Gilly Carr: It is likely that some of the people in mass graves were Jewish. And according to Halakha or Jewish law, you cannot disturb the dead. But the second reason is that according to prisoner statements, some people were dumped at sea or thrown off cliffs. What are we going to do? Dig up the entire island? Well, we can't do that.

The researchers are drawing on rich material. The Nazis were meticulous record keepers -- and British archives contain first hand testimonies from survivors.

Holly Williams: Look at this. "We were beaten with everything they could lay their hands on: with sticks, spades, pickaxes."

Gilly Carr: It sounds absolutely ghastly.

Dr. Gilly Carr

Holly Williams: "On certain days, five to six, up to 10 men died."

Dr. Carr told us there's no evidence that gas chambers were used on Alderney -- but there were summary executions, and the prisoners built the Nazi fortifications on starvation rations.

Holly Williams: Were they taken to Alderney to be worked to death?

Gilly Carr: They were certainly seen as expendable. The aim was to get every ounce of work out of them. And if they died, it didn't matter, and that was kind of perhaps "expected."

Holly Williams: They were disposable human beings.

Gilly Carr: Yes. Yes.

Holly Williams: How did your father end up in Alderney?

At a pub in the Channel Islands, we met Gary Font. His father – Francisco Font – fought on the losing side in the Spanish Civil War, was arrested in France, handed over to the Germans, and sent to a concentration camp on Alderney. Francisco survived, and later married a British woman -- Gary's mother.

Holly Williams and Gary Font

Gary Font: He witnessed-- the execution of a young Soviet boy who decided to leave the working detail and to change his footwear. So he started to pick up these paper bags, and wrap them 'round his feet, and then tie them with string. And a SS guard had seen him do this, and walked up to him and-- and shot him-- point-blank range.

Gary told us his father's experiences left him scarred.

Gary Font: I saw the emotion on his face. Yeah, it's a tough one.

Holly Williams: Do you think that emotion came from-- that he had survived the War in Spain, and survived the camp here?

Gary Font: Yeah, exactly. That was the first time I realized, "Wow, you know, this man has a deep-rooted emotion inside of him that he could never get out."

The British government's effort to get the truth out – by recounting the dead – was commissioned by Lord Pickles – a former cabinet minister and now the U.K.'s envoy for post-Holocaust issues.

Lord Pickles: The figures vary, not by a few hundred, not by a few thousand, by-- by tens of thousands.

Holly Williams: So it was the controversy that prompted you to commission the review?

Lord Pickles: Yes. It seemed to me that the sensible thing was, "Well, okay. Let's do that-- this in the open. Let's do it fully transparent.

He's also asked the researchers to put names to as many of those killed as they can.

Lord Pickles: If you remember them as individuals, then it's another blow against Hitler. Hitler wanted to eradicate the memory of people.

Lord Pickles

Holly Williams: So this is kind of an ongoing fight against Hitler and his ideas?

Lord Pickles: Hitler's evil hand still continues to affect-- to affect Europe and to affect the world.

But it's taken nearly 80 years for the British government to re-examine what happened on Alderney -- and to make its report public. The official British investigations in 1945 were classified for decades. And unlike the trials of Nazi officials in Nuremberg -- the British authorities failed to prosecute a single German officer who worked on Alderney – even though many of them ended up in British prisoner of war camps.

Holly Williams: I mean just to be clear, these are possible war criminals. The British government has gathered evidence against-- against them. And they are in British custody.

Gilly Carr: Yes, they are at this point, yes.

Holly Williams: A sort of slam-dunk case?

Gilly Carr: You'd have thought.

That's led Marcus Roberts and others to claim that the British government tried to cover-up the extent of the atrocities on Alderney. Dr. Carr told us that could be true -- but one key document from the British War Office investigation that may explain why there were no prosecutions is missing.

Gilly Carr: It could have been shredded-- decades ago as part of, "What do we need these files for anymore?

Holly Williams: But could it also have been shredded for more nefarious purposes?

Gilly Carr: I have no idea. In order for me to say there was a cover-up, I want to see the decisions taken. I want to look through those steps and to make up my own mind.

Holly Williams: Why might the British government have tried to cover up or whitewash what happened on Alderney and-- and maybe more broadly, on the Channel Islands?

Gilly Carr: There are some things that-- that happened that might not-- that the British government might not necessarily have wanted a wider audience to know about.

Those things – once feared too troubling for the broader public – happened on three of the other Channel Islands -- where most residents did not evacuate before the occupation. When the Germans arrived, the locals mostly cooperated – often with little choice. Hitler's portrait was hung outside this cinema on the island of Guernsey. Nazi propaganda showed the British police working for German troops. And British newspapers on the islands printed orders from Berlin.

Holly Williams: This is a British newspaper. And it's got the swastika on top.

Linda Romeril: That's right.

Researching Channel Islands history

At the official archives on the island of Jersey, Linda Romeril showed us how British officials implemented Nazi policies -- asking Jewish residents to identify themselves, and then confiscating their assets.

Linda Romeril: There was a huge amount of requisitioning of people's houses, people's property during the occupation period.

But some resisted -- risking punishment to paint anti-nazi graffiti, and illegally listening to British news on the radio.

Jenny Lecoat: That's my great aunt Louisa. I suspect that she was probably quite steely.

One member of the resistance was Louisa Gould -- who hid an escaped Russian prisoner in her home for nearly two years. Jenny Lecoat told us when her great aunt Louisa was finally caught, she was sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp in Germany.

Holly Williams: She was killed in a Nazi gas chamber?

Jenny Lecoat: She was gassed to death, yeah.

Holly Williams: After the occupation, did the British government get in touch with your family to talk about what Louisa had done during the occupation, and about her murder by the Nazis?

Jenny Lecoat: The British government, I think, were kind of ashamed. They were horrified it had happened, and they didn't really want to get too involved in what had gone on there.

Holly Williams: Not wanting to talk about the resistance? Or not wanting to talk about the occupation at all?

Jenny Lecoat: Well, it was such a mixed picture. There were people who had resisted the Germans as much as resistance was possible within a tiny, nine-by-five-mile island. And there were also people who'd collaborated. Some people had betrayed their own country. The only possible legislation was treason, which was still a hanging offense. They didn't wanna get into that. That was the confusing, messy, dirty mixed picture of-- of the Channel Islands occupation.

Holly Williams and Jenny Jenny Lecoat

We'll learn more about that messy, dirty history when the British government's review of the death toll at the camps on Alderney is published next month. But it's unlikely to satisfy everyone.

Marcus Roberts: Some kind of-- ap-- apology and, you know, moral recompense would be helpful.

Holly Williams: You-- you want the British government to apologize--

Marcus Roberts: Yeah. I'd like--

Holly Williams: --for not having prosecuted alleged war criminals?

Marcus Roberts: Yeah. So I think it would be appropriate for them to recognize what should have been done, didn't happen.

The horrors carried out on this tiny, remote island are difficult to imagine... the victims were silenced and buried… but now, nearly eight decades later, they're finally being counted.

Britain Memorializes a Queen, With Smiles and Bronze Corgis

Sculptors have immortalized past British monarchs with imposing, stern-faced statues. For Queen Elizabeth II, they’re taking a different approach.

A bronze statue of Queen Elizabeth II in flowing robes stands on a plinth in a garden. A bronze corgi stands at the statue’s feet and two more corgis stand around the plinth’s base.

By Alex Marshall

While reporting this story in Oakham, England, Alex Marshall met six corgis.

It looked like a corgi convention.

On Sunday afternoon in Oakham, a quaint English market town, hundreds of local residents stood behind a temporary barrier and craned their necks to see the 50 or so dogs waddling past in the local library’s gardens.

The yapping mutts were just a sideshow, however, to the main event, which was announced from a dais by Sarah Furness, a local dignitary: the unveiling of Britain’s first memorial statue to Queen Elizabeth II.

The seven-foot bronze work, by the London-based sculptor Hywel Pratley , shows the queen in flowing robes, with three corgis at her feet. “What most of us remember about Queen Elizabeth is her warmth,” Furness said in a speech. “By showing Queen Elizabeth’s love of dogs, we show her humanity,” she added.

Eighteen months after Queen Elizabeth II’s death, Britain is beginning to memorialize the former monarch, with municipalities and institutions across the country unveiling statues in her honor.

Sculptors began working on some of these long before the queen’s death, including one at York Minster in the north of England, unveiled in 2022 , that presents her in full regalia. Another, at the Royal Albert Hall in London , shows a younger, glamorous monarch on a night out at that concert hall, wearing a fashionable dress and tiara.

But many, including the Oakham statue, are more recent commissions. And most of those, unlike the stern statues of Queen Victoria found across Britain, depict the queen as warm and approachable.

This fall, authorities in the town of Newcastle-under-Lyme plan to unveil a work in bronze by Andy Edwards that shows the queen smiling and clutching flowers . The local government for Test Valley, in southern England, this year plans to unveil two sculptures of the queen by Amy Goodman , one of which depicts a beaming monarch waving at passers-by.

In 2026, a joint committee set up by the royal family and the British government plans to unveil its ideas for a national Queen Elizabeth II memorial.

Pratley, the Oakham statue sculptor, said in an interview that depicting the queen in a relatable way reflected many Britons’ memories of her as “an almost motherly figure.”

It also reflected a move in public statuary toward sculptures that encouraged interaction, he said, rather than depictions that glared down from high pedestals. (He hoped that children would sit on the corgis in Oakham, he added.)

Furness, the local dignitary, said she came up with the idea for a monument in September 2022, almost immediately after the queen’s death. As the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Furness represents the monarchy at events around Oakham, and she said that residents kept “stopping me in the street, and saying what a shock it was the queen had died and how much she meant to them.”

After speaking with a local foundry, Furness approached Pratley with a commission.

The sculptor’s first idea was for a statue depicting an elderly queen wearing a pillbox hat, sitting on a bench surrounded by corgis. That idea was “charming,” Furness recalled, but it hadn’t felt right. “If it were a statue of my grandmother, I’d have loved it,” Furness said, “but I thought for the longest serving monarch, and a statue that’ll last for hundreds of years, she had to look like a queen.”

Soon after their first meeting, Pratley changed tack and made a maquette featuring the queen in flowing robes, though he kept the corgis. With that model on view, Furness said, it had been easy to raise the statue’s cost of 140,000 pounds, or about $177,000, from the public.

But in Britain, months of commemorations have also led to some fatigue, said Graham Smith, the chief executive officer of Republic, an anti-monarchist organization. He pointed out that London’s transport authorities had recently named a subway line after Queen Elizabeth, adding that she hardly needed to be carved in stone or remembered in bronze, too. “Maybe we just give it a rest,” Smith said, adding “there were better people to celebrate” in public places.

At Sunday’s unveiling, the popularity of Pratley’s statue in Oakham was clear. After Furness slipped away the sheet covering the art work, the local bishop, Debbie Sellin, gave a blessing — “May it bring joy and encouragement,” she said — a bagpiper played a lament and the crowd sang Britain’s national anthem. (“God Save the King,” these days.) Then, residents and tourists lined up to take selfies in front of the new landmark.

Charlie Farrow, 62, who had brought along her own corgi, Edith, said that she thought the bronze queen looked “a little thick” around the waist, but, overall, Pratley’s artwork was “a really nice piece.”

She especially liked the corgis. “In many respects these dogs symbolize what she was,” Farrow said: “Her Majesty was fabulous, really good-natured and no trouble.”

Rwanda’s Hope Hostel once housed genocide survivors. Now it awaits migrants from Britain

Rwanda says it’s ready to receive migrant s from the United Kingdom after the British Parliament this week approved a long-stalled and controversial bill seeking to stem the tide of people crossing the English Channel in small boats by deporting some of them to the East African country.

There is even a place ready and waiting for the migrants — a refurbished Hope Hostel in the vibrant upscale neighborhood of Kagugu, an area of the Rwandan capital of Kigali that is home to many expatriots and several international schools.

The hostel once housed college students whose parents died in the 1994 genocide, the most horrific period in this African nation’s history, when an estimated 800,000 Tutsis were killed by extremist Hutus in massacres that lasted over 100 days.

U.K. lawmakers approve bill to send migrants to Rwanda

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak quelled a Conservative Party rebellion and got his stalled plan approved, but hurdles remain before any flights take off.

Jan. 17, 2024

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has pledged the deportation flights would begin in July but has refused to provide details or estimate how many people would be deported.

Rwanda government’s deputy spokesperson, Alain Mukuralinda, told the Associated Press on Tuesday that authorities here have been planning for the migrants’ arrival for two years.

“Even if they arrive now or tomorrow, all arrangements are in place,” he said.

The plan was long held up in British courts and by opposition from human rights activists who say it is illegal and inhumane. It envisages deporting to Rwanda some of those who enter the U.K. illegally and migrant advocates have vowed to continue to fight against the plan.

U.K. says it has paid Rwanda $300 million for a blocked asylum deal. No flights have taken off

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is under pressure to explain why Britain has paid Rwanda $300 million as part of a blocked asylum plan.

Dec. 8, 2023

The measure is also meant to be a deterrent to migrants who risk their lives in leaky, inflatable boats in hopes that they will be able to claim asylum once they reach Britain. The U.K. also signed a new treaty with Rwanda to beef up protections for migrants, and adopted new legislation declaring Rwanda to be a safe country.

“The Rwanda critics and the U.K. judges who earlier said Rwanda is not a safe country have been proven wrong,” Mukuralinda said. “Rwanda is safe.”

The management at the four-story Hope Hostel says the facility is ready and can accommodate 100 people at full capacity. The government says it will serve as a transit center and that more accommodations would be made available as needed.

Thousands of migrants arrive in Britain every year.

Mass graves in Rwanda reveal cracks in reconciliation efforts, 30 years after the genocide

Mass graves are still being found in Rwanda, 30 years after the genocide in which extremist Hutus killed an estimated 800,000 Tutsis in the Central African country.

April 7, 2024

After they are sent to Rwanda, the migrants will be shown to their rooms to rest, after which they will be offered food and given some orientation points about Kigali and Rwanda, said hostel manager Ismael Bakina.

Tents will be set up within the hostel’s compound for processing their documentation and for various briefings. The site is equipped with security cameras, visible across the compound.

Within the compound are also entertainment places, a mini-soccer field, a basketball and a volleyball court as well as a red-carpeted prayer room. For those who want to light up, “there is even a smoking room,” Bakina explained.

Meals will be prepared in the hostel’s main kitchen but provisions are also being made for those who want to prepare their own meals, he said. The migrants will be free to walk outside the hostel and even visit the nearby Kigali city center.

U.K. plan to fly asylum seekers to Rwanda draws outrage

Britain’s Conservative government has struck a deal with Rwanda to send some asylum seekers thousands of miles away to the East African country.

April 14, 2022

“We will have different translators, according to [their] languages,” Bakina added, saying they include English and Arabic.

The government has said the migrants will have their papers processed within the first three months. Those who want to remain in Rwanda will be allowed to do so while authorities will also assist those who wish to return to their home countries.

While in Rwanda, migrants who obtain legal status — presumably to enter Britain — will also be processed, authorities have said, though it’s unclear what that means exactly.

For those who choose to stay, Mukurilinda said Rwanda’s government will bear full financial and other responsibilities for five years, after which they will be considered integrated into the society.

At that point, they can start managing on their own.

Ssuuna writes for the Associated Press.

By the numbers: Statistics confirm Scottie Scheffler's historical dominance

Change Text Size

Is impending fatherhood the only thing stopping Scottie Scheffler? Quite possibly.

His historic run continued Monday when he completed his victory at the RBC Heritage. It was his fourth win in his past five starts, a run that also included victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, THE PLAYERS Championship and the Masters. The only exception was a runner-up finish at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, where he missed a 6-footer to join Stephan Jaeger in a playoff.

Scottie Scheffler’s Round 4 highlights From RBC Heritage

Scheffler has seemed invincible lately, and the statistics confirm that. Here’s a closer look at some of the key stats that put Scheffler’s historic play into perspective:

  • By winning at Harbour Town Golf Links, Scheffler became the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to win the RBC Heritage one week after winning the Masters .
  • Scheffler is the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006 to win the week after winning a major .
  • With four wins and a runner-up in his past five starts, Scheffler is the first player since Woods in 2007-08 to have five consecutive top-two finishes . Vijay Singh is the only other player to have such a run in the past 30 years (2004).
  • This was Scheffler’s 10th PGA TOUR victory, coming in just his 51st start since he earned his first win at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open. Only David Duval has needed fewer starts after his first win to reach victory No. 10. Duval did it in 33 starts. Tiger Woods is third on the list with 59 starts.
  • In his 51 starts since the 2022 WM Phoenix Open, Scheffler also has 23 top-three finishes (45%) and 35 top-10s (68.6%).
  • All 10 of Scheffler’s wins have come since the start of the 2021-22 season. He is the first player to win 10 (or more) times on the PGA TOUR in the span of three seasons since Dustin Johnson won 10 titles between 2015-16 and 2017-18.
  • This is Scheffler’s fourth win of the season, matching his career-high from 2022. He is the fourth player with multiple four-win seasons since the start of 2000 , joining Woods (10), Singh, (3) and Phil Mickelson (2).
  • Scheffler has now recorded 40 consecutive TOUR rounds at par or better , a streak that began in the final round of the 2023 TOUR Championship. He’s 12 back of Woods’ all-time TOUR mark of 52 straight rounds at par or better (set across 2000-01).
  • In each of Scheffler’s last seven victories, eight or more of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking have been in the field . His most recent run of four wins in five starts has included two Signature Events (Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, RBC Heritage), THE PLAYERS and the Masters.
  • Scheffler is averaging 5.38 birdies per round this season, on pace to set the all-time TOUR record for single-season birdie average (since the statistic was first tracked in 1980) . Woods set the current record (4.92) in 2020.
  • In his 39 rounds this season, he has outperformed the field average 35 times . He’s been at least a shot better than the field 30 times, at least two shots better 26 times and at least three shots better 19 times.
  • Scheffler leads the TOUR in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green by nearly a shot per round this season , after finishing atop the category by more than two-thirds of a stroke per round last season. No player had previously led the category by more than four-tenths of a stroke per round since Woods in 2009.
