I am over-the-moon about my choice to move to Brownell Travel! I have been in the industry over four years and my book of business was growing each year. However, I wanted to “take the reins” and control the growth intentionally. I knew that would mean a change in my host agency.

Brownell has always stood out to me as a leader in the industry, not just because of their impressive numbers, but also due to their reputation of graciousness. From the moment I reached out to them until I completed my personalized one-on-one training, I was blown away by their professionalism, hospitality and assistance. The amount of resources they offer along with a common thread of motivation and support encourages me to be the very best I can be, both professionally and personally.

I am truly humbled and honored to be a part of the Brownell Community. I would encourage anyone that is hard-working and passionate about travel to consider researching this agency to see if they are the perfect fit for their business.

AJ, you have no idea how much this means to us! We are thrilled you chose us and for all the right reasons. We look forward to continuing to work hard with you and help you build the business you want to build.

Brownell's marketing support for their ICs is outstanding. One of the many options they offer as part of their product suite is social media customization and deployment across all channels. This particular service was a godsend for me when I was underwater throughout 2021 and 2022 and didn’t have the time or desire to dedicate to this aspect of my marketing plan. This service was worth every penny. It allowed me to focus on keeping my clients happy, my service levels at a high standard, and my social media strategy consistent and on point. It was cost-effective and reliable. No wasted time searching UpWork and Fiverr for the "right" contractor. I've now built my business to the point of being able to hire staff to handle social media tasks, but we still rely on their editorial calendar for ideas and inspiration. Could not have kept this up without them!

Rachel, thank you for this awesome shout out to our Marketing team! They work so hard and I am thrilled they were able to bolster you through this transition, and continue to support your social media and marketing inspiration!

My story with Brownell is not traditional as I did not participate in the mentoring program. Instead, I spent ten years as a travel coordinator (assistant) for a top producing Brownell IC and with the support of my IC, had the gradual intention of becoming an IC myself. This goal became a reality in 2021 post pandemic. With guidance and support from my IC "boss" and from the Brownell Hosting team, I was able to transition from a support role to an IC role with my own business. Brownell welcomed me and my skillset and provided all of the resources and know-how to successfully create my business and hit the ground running selling travel. I cannot say enough about the level of comfort I had launching a business with this kind, caring and well-respected host agency! Key factors for remaining with Brownell were the overwhelming sense of community among advisors, excellent support from the Brownell accounting and hosting teams and intense pride of being associated with such a well-respected host agency. Icing on the cake is the Brownell air desk, insurance desk and task support available to all IC's on an as needed basis. With only a few months left into my second year as an IC, I can honestly say Brownell is a wonderful place to call "home".

Sarah, we have loved being your home!! There are many paths to building your own successful business, and we are proud to be here for you as you continue to grow yours. Thank you!

I started with Brownell 5 years ago through the Mentoring Program and honestly has been the best career move I have ever made! I had only done corporate travel before starting at Brownell, and the team provided such amazing excellent support and resources to really jump-start my business. I came from an HR background - so I can truly say the training I received was thoughtful, thorough and first-class. Beyond the success of the Brownell travel advisors, one of the things that really attracted me to Brownell was the strong mission and values of the company that is a part of everything we do. The values are not just something written on paper but really integrated into the business and all decision-making. I feel like I am surrounded by the best of the best in the travel industry, and whenever I have any questions I have a dedicated expert team to help. Having a million-dollar travel business within 5 years was beyond my wildest expectations - and I know I could not have done it without the extraordinary support of the Brownell family. Thank you!!

Jessica, we are so glad you decided to make the leap in your career and join us! It is through no absence of hard work that you've built your business, and we are proud to support you along the way. Thank you for your review and for being part of our community!

Before joining Brownell, I was in the travel industry but in the niche sphere of the safari world. I was looking to expand and grow as a travel industry professional and decided to start my own company with the help of Brownell Travel. Brownell offers a one of a kind, year long mentor program. The mentor program covers absolutely everything a travel advisor needs to know to launch their business as a strong, successful business from the start. Once you finish the mentor program, you still receive an incredible amount of support from the Brownell team. Brownell offers unparalleled partnerships, marketing services, business reviews, administrative and sales support and more. I am so grateful for the tight knit community of extremely knowledgeable, gracious and supportive Brownell employees and travel advisors. I can't imagine launching and maintaining my business without Brownell.

Alli - Thank you for your thoughtful review! We LOVE having you in the community and looking forward to another successful year for ACT!

I just had my 5 years anniversary with Brownell Travel. Before that, I was with a tour operator for 9 years and another agency for 1 year. I worked with so many travel agencies during my tour operator years and can unequivocally say Brownell stands out way above the rest. Brownell was very clear from the beginning in explaining how they work. With so many changes constantly happening in our business, this was critical for me. Brownell offers incredible support for day to day needs through the Hosting Team. They also off a full service Air Desk, Insurance Desk and Marketing Department. We have a network App where all Independent Contractors within Brownell share advice, updates and support for one another. My colleagues are always gracious and with our exclusive Brownell Educational trips, I love to travel with my colleagues, who are also friends. Brownell has tremendous respect in the travel industry which allows us to serve our clients better. I'm lucky to be a part of this wonderful team.

Anne, thank you for taking the time to share your review. We are proud of all the resources that we offer, and I am glad you feel fully supported through all the changes in our industry. Glad to have you in the community!

Brownell is the place to be if you want an incredible support team, excellent industry connections and surrounded by high level advisors who are well respected in the industry. I have really loved my time at Brownell and my business is thriving because Brownell supports me so I have time to go and sell travel!

Thank you for taking the time to review, Shelley! We love having you in the community, and have enjoyed seeing your business flourish. Kudos to you!

When I decided to retire from an executive role corporate America and pursue a 2nd career in luxury travel, I spent a lot of time researching my options as I wanted to go with the best! As part of my research process, I utilized Host Agency Reviews. HAR was a great resource and I evaluated every host agency listed on HAR that met my requirements of belonging to the Virtuoso consortium and that accepted beginner IC advisors. I soon narrowed the list down to four potential host agencies, with Brownell being at the very top.

I heard that Brownell was the Ivy League of host agencies, and I found out it’s true! Their mentoring program is very thoughtfully designed to provide new advisors with a robust and logical curriculum to go from a travel newbie to expert advisor within their first year. And Brownell’s support and IC focused resources are industry leading. Their Air Desk and Insurance Desk are topnotch and I’m happy to outsource these more complex travel components to the experts (which makes me look even better in the eyes of my clients). Their Hosting Support and Sales Support teams are a godsend when I need assistance and want to outsource hotel research, Axus itinerary creation or even the monotonous data entry requirements of CB+. And I can’t say enough about their Marketing team. From the monthly programs of white label newsletters and social media content to the broad list of custom marketing materials they can create for me, my marketing program is leaps and bounds better thanks to their assistance.

The size of the host agency I was choosing was also very important. Going with a large company that had 1,400 advisors was not an option – I did not want to be just a number. A much smaller agency with around 15 – 20 was not a good fit for me either. The sweet spot was to go with a company that hosted between 100 – 200 advisors which is exactly what Brownell’s host community has. My first opportunity to meet a good portion of the Brownell community in-person was Virtuoso Week 2022 and I instantaneously bonded with my new travel family members. I am blessed to be part of this community and amazed at the amount of time Brownell ICs devote to helping their community members with all sorts of travel questions. This network of experienced advisors supporting each other with their collective knowledgebase is a key reason Brownell advisors are so successful.

I am only 6 months into launching my new travel business and halfway through my mentoring year, but I am already building a strong list of clients and book of business. Brownell is continuing to support me through this growth to ensure both my current and future success, and I know I couldn’t have made a better choice for my host agency.

David, we are so glad you chose us when you went through your detailed research of all your options. Our mentoring program is designed precisely for people like YOU to find success and joy in a new career chapter. We are glad to have you in the Brownell community and look forward to seeing your business grow!

I could not imagine working with another host agency. I started my business and my year of mentoring with Brownell in early March 2020 before the world shut down and could have never known what would lie ahead for the industry. 2020 was a tough year for everyone, but Brownell remained vigilantly committed to its mentees and its hosting community, adapting and evolving with the ever-changing landscape while keeping its advisors top of mind. Brownell quickly became my virtual travel family.

Coming from a completely different background (accounting), the Brownell's mentee program was exactly what I needed - training, support, encouragement and a mentee family (during a tough 2020). Not only have the appointed mentors have fine-tuned this program to set its mentees up for success, but the rest of the Brownell community also provides an incredible support system during that first year and thereafter.

With Brownell, I always feel supported and encouraged by a leadership team who truly cares about its advisors. I highly recommend Brownell as a host agency for anyone looking to start a career in travel or change host agencies .

Thank you Abbay! Your first experience in the travel industry was a real test of mettle, and you have built an impressive and robust business out of it. We look forward to seeing your next chapter in your new(ish) home!

I started my travel business in 2018 after being home to raise my kids for many years. I could never have done it without Brownell! Nor would I want to. They are a top-notch host agency with some of the nicest most genuine people you will ever encounter. Brownell has an amazing reputation in the travel business which gives my business immediate credibility I would have to work years to earn. I started in their mentoring program in early 2018 and have never regretted it for a moment. The program is rigorous and teaches you everything you need to know to launch a successful travel business. Another great benefit of being in the mentoring program is that you are being trained with a small select group of people that have the same goal in mind. It's a great bonding experience and I have had my "classmates" to lean on. I will forever be grateful that I chose Brownell and they chose me! You will not find a better more supportive community anywhere!

Thank you, Amy!! We love having you in the community, and I am so glad you found us for this chapter.

Our History

We are proud of our history and heritage at Brownell. Take a trip with us back to 1887 when Walter Brownell and ten guests set sail from New York aboard the SS Devonia bound for Europe. Little did these intrepid travelers know that they would come to represent the roots of a legacy that has serviced more than 75,000 clients over a century later. Today, Brownell is the leading luxury travel firm in the country. That’s not something that happens overnight. Though our story reaches back to history, our embrace of modern technology and commitment to service will propel us into the future.

After Long Beach State ouster and March glory, Dan Monson feels the love

The only coach who led his team to March Madness this season, then went straight to looking for a new job, is getting lots of pats on the back this week during his visit to the Final Four.

He needs them. In the quieter times that have become more common since his whirlwind trip to the NCAA Tournament came to an end last month, Dan Monson said, “you do a lot of reflecting, and it’s been a little darker than I wanted it to be.”

The 62-year-old now-former coach at Long Beach State made the trip to college basketball’s Final Four coaching convention, just as he has every year for decades, since even before his dad, Don, started running the show at Oregon in the 1980s. This is a different sort of journey. There were 68 coaches who got their team into the bracket this season. Only one is looking for work.

“People come up to congratulate me,” Monson told the Associated Press during a chat near the hotel lobby where he has been a mini-celebrity. “The ones I know really well, I pull ‘em in and I’m like, ‘Congratulate me for getting fired, or for what?’”

Long Beach State coach Dan Monson watches his team play against UC Davis in Big West tournament championship

Already dismissed, Dan Monson leads Long Beach State on unlikely last dance

Dan Monson told his Long Beach State players no one else believed in them and they responded with fire, earning an unlikely NCAA tournament bid.

March 20, 2024

Monson was the talk of the first week of the tournament, where the story of him losing his job, then leading his team to the Big West Tournament title and the NCAA trip that came with it, landed him in Salt Lake City.

He returned home after an 85-65 first-round loss to Arizona and embarked on end-of-season meetings with his players the next Monday and Tuesday.

“Then, Wednesday morning, I didn’t have anything going,” he said. “That’s when it really hit home.”

He mowed the lawn. Took care of his taxes — “That won’t be as hard to do next year,” he said — then went about the heart-wrenching task of cleaning out his office.

“That was my kids’ play area when they were little,” Monson said. “They were 6, 4, 2 and newborn when I got this job. Now, the last one’s a senior in high school.”

The melancholy has been broken up by moments when he’s been heartened — brought to tears, in fact — by the relationships he’s built in a business that has felt more like a calling than a job.

Long Beach State coach Dan Monson calls out to his players during the team's loss to Arizona

Long Beach State coach Dan Monson’s defiant run ends with loss to Arizona

Dan Monson says goodbye to the Long Beach State team he coached for 17 years in an 85-65 loss to Arizona in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

March 21, 2024

For instance, he considered himself only an acquaintance of Clemson coach Brad Brownell. And when Brownell’s recruiting director, Lucas McKay, texted him shortly after the loss to Arizona, Monson figured it was the typical reach-out looking for scouting tips since that was Clemson’s next opponent.

But Monson considers Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd like family. He dialed the Clemson coach, getting ready to break the news that he could not help. Turned out, Brownell was just making sure Monson had a ticket to Clemson’s Sweet 16 game in nearby Los Angeles if he wanted one.

“It caught me off guard. I just got emotional and I could barely talk,” Monson said. “Here’s a coach who’s been basically in this spot for 15 years. He’s got the biggest game of his career coming up, and he’s asking if I need a ticket to the game. It was a really neat thing that happened when it was dark for me.”

Monson said he had a friendly beer with Long Beach State’s athletic director, Bobby Smitheran. It was Smitheran who made the call not to renew Monson. The AD added more weirdness to the story when he told the AP that ousting Monson, who was on a four-game losing streak when the decision was made, was part of the plan to turn things around and landed the team in the tournament.

There had been upheaval in the athletic department before Smitheran arrived that led to Monson entering 2023 with only one year left on his contract. He knew he would probably need to go to the tournament this year to keep his job.

“The problem is, they didn’t wait to see if we could do it or not before they made the decision. That’s what hurts the most,” Monson said. “We end up winning 21 games and wind up going to the tournament. That’s not a real fireable year.”

But, Monson said, there was no use belaboring the point.

Long Beach State head coach Dan Monson participates in a net cutting ceremony.

It’s madness at Long Beach State as Dan Monson heads to NCAA tournament on his way out

Dan Monson was informed last week he would no longer coach Long Beach State after this season, yet the team has advanced to the NCAA tournament.

March 17, 2024

“Am I going to let it define me, or not talk to somebody because they made a decision I don’t agree with?” Monson said. “I’m more of a man than that.”

So, he begins the next chapter with this on his resume: 27 years as a head coach, 445 wins, nine regular-season or conference titles, four trips to March Madness.

He’s the man who, in the late 1990s, built the foundation at Gonzaga that propelled the Zags on a string of 25 straight trips to the tournament. He also rebuilt Long Beach State, coming in after a recruiting scandal placed the program in NCAA purgatory.

Maybe most importantly, Monson said, “our kids graduate, we never had a police report, never had a kid ineligible.”

What became clear to him during the off days that came after the tournament is that he doesn’t want to quit this profession. He came to Phoenix to network, to help his assistant coaches who also need jobs, to take his sons to the games and, mostly, to let everyone know he has nothing to be ashamed about.

“At the end of the day, I did it with integrity, I did it within the NCAA rules, and I did it for the betterment of these young men,” Monson said. “I’m proud of what I did. And that’s why I’m walking around here this week with my head up.”

Pells writes for the Associated Press.
