Brussels Airlines Review: A Distrustful Airline?

Brussels Airlines Airbus A320 at CPH Airport

We flew from Copenhagen to Brussels with Brussels Airlines. The airline was strange for us but we had an image that it has a good reputation. However, it turned the other way, learn how we got disappointed for this Belgium airline.

Covered in the Article

Route network, loyalty programs of brussels airlines, booking the flight, flight cancellation and its consequences, check-in procedure, aircraft of our flight, in-flight meals, customer service and professional skills, cabin of the planes, ticket price, price to quality ratio, overall rating, final words, brussels airlines: airline from the eu.

Brussels is the de-facto capital of the European Union. Brussels is a lively city full of friendly people. That made our expectations for Brussels Airlines high but unfortunately, we were disappointed. However, it is good to remember that the airline itself has nothing to do with the EU, the only thing that happens to come from Brussels.

Brussels Airlines is the flag carrier of Belgium, replacing the country's former national carrier Sabena which collapsed in 2001. The country needed a new national airline. This was finally realized when private investors and governments founded a new company together. Brussels Airlines was founded in 2006 and its operations began a year later.

Brussels Airlines is a medium-sized airline. It is flying mainly inside Europe with its short-haul fleet. The airline has only a few long-haul destinations.

Brussels Airport is the hub of the Brussels Airlines. The airline has about 90 destinations that are located mainly inside Europe. There are also a few destinations in the United States. Because Brussels Airlines has only 3 wide-body aircraft, the number of long-haul destinations is limited. The airline has a good code-share network with well-known big airlines.

Brussels Airlines belongs to the Star Alliance which is the biggest airline alliance in the world. Together with the alliance, this medium-sized airline can be competitive in the global market.

Brussels Airlines has two different loyalty programs. You can collect points to Miles&More which is an airline mile program managed by Brussel Airline's parent company Lufthansa . Another option is to collect points for Brussels Airlines' program called LOOP . It differs from traditional airlines' bonus systems.

Because we flew with a low-fare ticket, we were not entitled to any Miles&More points. The LOOP program was not useful for us either because we are not flying with Brussels Airlines often. That is why we didn't analyse the benefits of these programs better..

Our Flight with Brussels Airlines

We flew from Copenhagen to Brussels in April 2018. Because Brussels Airlines is not flying directly from Helsinki, we first took Norwegian's flight from Helsinki to Copenhagen and then continued with Brussels Airlines to the final destination. This route was the best option for us since we didn't want to book an expensive Finnair's direct flight from Helsinki to Brussels and obviously with our wants to try flying with an unfamiliar airline for us.

Unfortunately, everything didn't go as smoothly as we had planned. Brussels Airlines broke our plans and they were quite unwilling to co-operate in solving them.

Like always, we compared flight prices on Skyscanner . We decided to book two separate flights. One from Helsinki to Copenhagen with Norwegian and one from Copenhagen to Brussels with Brussels Airlines. We estimated that there was enough time to connect between the flights because we were planning to travel only with hand luggage. We also had our private travel insurance in case we missed the connection.

Tip: Always have travel insurance when travelling to limit unexpected costs.

The booking process itself went smoothly. Skyscanner directed us to the airline's web page where we finished the booking.

Problems started a few weeks after our booking was still many weeks before the actual travel date. Brussels Airlines suddenly contacted us that they had cancelled our flight and we should have flown from Copenhagen to Brussels 4 hours earlier as it was originally scheduled. It is the first time in our travel history that an airline cancels a flight and expects us to fly much earlier than we had booked.

We contacted Brussels Airlines and were told that we couldn't fly earlier but the only option is to fly later. Finally, they proposed we fly the next day but told us that we should pay for our hotel in Copenhagen ourselves. The customer service was unfriendly and not helpful at all.

Finally, we rebooked our outbound flight with Norwegian Airlines to Copenhagen just to be able to make the earlier flight with Brussels Airlines. We had to pay all the extra costs ourselves. This airline didn't take responsibility. According to our communication with the European Consumer Centre, Brussels Airlines did wrong. While we were trying to solve the problem, the airline's way of communication became unfriendlier and unfriendlier.

When the day of flying came, we made the check-in online. It went smoothly without any problems. We flew to Copenhagen by Norwegian and at the Copenhagen Airport, we just proceeded to the gate because we had only our hand luggage. Brussels Airlines' cheapest economy ticket does not include luggage to the hold on short-haul flights. The seat selection was free during the online check-in.

Our flight was operated by Airbus A320. It departed from Copenhagen a little late but that wasn't a big issue. The plane was clean and in good condition. We were not expecting anything more so we were happy with the aircraft.

Brussels Airlines is not offering any complimentary in-flight meals on short-haul flights in economy class. Unexpectedly, we were offered a cute piece of chocolate.

Our Brussels Airlines Rating

This is the first time we have given only 1 star for customer service. Brussels Airlines was quite unwilling to solve problems and their replies were unfriendly. They didn't take responsibility.

The cabin was clean and in good condition. There were not any in-flight entertainment systems though we did not expect much.

The cabin of Airbus A320 on Brussels Airlines

Our fare was surprisingly low. It seems that Brussels Airlines can't anymore offer good quality when the fares have gone too down. We would have wanted to pay a little more for our flight tickets to get better customer service.

The price was low but so was the responsibility level of the airline. The price-to-quality ratio is at a moderate level. Brussels Airlines acts as a low-cost airline.

The flight itself went well and everything was like we expected during the flight. Also, the flying crew were friendly. However, if the airline is not serving its customers well or taking responsibility, it can't be rated as good. The lack of good customer service gives Brussels Airlines an overall low rating.

Would we fly with Brussels Airlines again? Probably yes. Based on our experiences, their responsibility level is quite low but that is typical for low-cost airlines. The only difference is that Brussels Airlines is not a low-cost airline but the flag carrier of Belgium.

Flying with Brussels Airlines is a good enough choice, but don't pay too much for the ticket. You may end up getting a low-cost service level.

After a first highly successful edition, the Kora Days return in 2024! Bozar dedicates four days to West Africa’s flagship instrument, the kora.

Just this once, the festival takes on an extra dimension. Kora Days 2024 will explore the connection between the kora and another well-known stringed instrument: the guitar. In addition, on this occasion, the great Toumani Diabaté honours us with an exceptional concert that unites him with the Orchestre National de Lille: a meeting between the kora and symphonic music that Toumani himself explored with the late Ali Farka Touré on their legendary album Ali et Toumani (2010). Brussels Jewellery Week

From 25 April to 5 May, Brussels will be all about contemporary jewellery! For its second edition, the Brussels Jewellery Week brings together established and emerging artists, collectors and an international audience. Brussels Jewellery Week aims to highlight contemporary jewellery as a creative and innovative craft. In addition to the main exhibition at MAD Brussels, tours, lectures and workshops will be organised at various locations around the city. PARTICLE[S] In physics, "elementary particles" are the smallest elements that form the matter and forces of the universe: in constant motion, these small entities are capable, by fusion, of forming large ensembles, thus forming the basis of all creation and transformation. In grammar, a particle is a small unchanging element: fixed, unassuming, it inflects the meaning of a word by connecting with it. The concept of PARTICLE[S] can be approached from a purely scientific or technical standpoint. But it can also be seen, in a world threatened by pollution, as a metaphor for many human interactions that ultimately form a critical mass. In the world of contemporary jewelry, we see that each material consists of the same tiny particles that together, in subtle arrangements, form a work of art.

Histoire de ne pas rire. Surrealism in Belgium

Bozar is celebrating 100 years of surrealism with an exhibition on Belgium’s famous avant-garde movement spanning no less than 60 years. 1924: as in Paris, surrealist activities also start in our country with bold pamphlets by artists including poet Paul Nougé, who guides this exhibition. Belgium’s quirky surrealists go beyond the purely aesthetic – they want to transform the world with their subversive art. In Histoire de ne pas rire, we pay extra attention to their international interactions, political-historical background, and important women artists. Includes works by Paul Nougé, René Magritte, Jane Graverol, Marcel Mariën, Rachel Baes, Leo Dohmen, Paul Delvaux, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Salvador Dalí, Georgio de Chirico, and many others.

Oscar Murillo - Masses

After his memorable intervention in the 2017 thematic exhibition The Absent Museum, WIELS is proud to invite back Oscar Murillo (b. 1986, CO) with Masses, a solo exhibition that establishes a cartography of mass—liquid, material, sonic—across a large-scale installation.

A liquid mass has the capability to create and erase itself with each wave that surfaces and Murillo’s practice relates in many ways to the oscillating force of water, an infinite flow of conception and undoing, pointing to his interest in the notion of cultural exchange and the circulation of ideas, languages and objects. The exhibition at WIELS marks the termination of Frequencies and ushers in a new phase that sees the collection of canvases and the memories they hold flattened into raw material mass, to be stitched together and used as a resource for new works, provocatively disrupting the intellectual project of an archive.

Ensor and Ostend. They are inextricably linked. But did you know that Brussels played a crucial role in how Ensor developed as an artist too?

WAW ! P(art)cours-PAR(kunst)

The parks, squares and historic monuments (castle and priory) of the communes of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Auderghem and Woluwe-Saint-Lambert will become the settings for singular artistic proposals. One of the leitmotifs of WAW! (5th edition of P(ART)cours / Par(KUNST) is re-enchanting the city (again).

Launched in 2014 with its first edition organised in the commune of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, the P(ART)cours / Par(KUNST) Biennial invites artists to take over the public space. Parks, remarkable squares, castles and other heritage treasures become the setting for singular artistic projects. Through this interaction, a new enchantment emanates from these sites and the works of art - installations, monumental sculptures, sound installations... - take on a special meaning. In 2024, the fifth edition of the Biennial, renamed WAW!, will once again bring together three municipalities: Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Auderghem and Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. From the Rouge-Cloître to the Place du Temps Libre, from the Malou Park to the Mellaerts ponds, fourteen artists (two of them working in duo) are challenging the public along a particular curatorial line: drawing attention to the aberrations and excesses of our society; making a restorative gesture; taking care of the environment, the land we live on, the collective memory, our fellow human beings...

IMAGINE! 100 YEARS OF INTERNATIONAL SURREALISM Each partner museum houses the core of the travelling exhibition and enriches it by emphasising its own heritage. In Brussels, the RMFAB will explore surrealism from a symbolist perspective, through more than 130 works of art (paintings, works on paper, sculptures, objects, assemblages, and photographs). IMAGINE! focuses on the connections and similarities, but also the fracture lines between surrealism and symbolism, its precursor. From 1880 onwards, Brussels was an exceptional forum for the arts and the avant-garde, as demonstrated by the exhibitions of the circles “Les XX” and “La Libre Esthétique”. Symbolism, embodied in particular by Rops, Spilliaert, Khnopff, Delville and Minne, saw rapid development in Brussels and largely anticipated the emergence of the surrealist movement. A few decades later, Brussels became a centre for Belgian surrealism. Despite the cultural rupture caused by World War I, the older symbolists and the emerging youth were never fundamentally alienated from each other. From January to July 2024, Belgium will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. What better year to celebrate surrealism, the movement which put Belgium on the map, and found meaning within a European context? What’s more, 2024 also marks the hundredth anniversary of the publication of the 'Surrealist Manifesto' (1924). With IMAGINE!, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium wish to celebrate the centenary of the birth of surrealism in an optimal European context. After Brussels and Paris, the exhibition will travel to the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Fundación Mapfré Madrid, before closing at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Curated by : - Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium: Francisca Vandepitte, Curator of Modern Art - Centre Pompidou, Musée national d'Art Moderne: Didier Ottinger, Deputy Director in charge of cultural programming at the Musée national d'Art moderne - Centre de création industrielle (MNAM/CCI) & Marie Sarré, Curatorial Attaché at the Modern Collections Department In collaboration with the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Fundación Mapfré Madrid and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Partners : Bozar, La Loterie Nationale, La Banque Transatlantique Belge, Le Soir, La Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale, Visit Brussels, Become a Friend, Belspo, La Première et La Trois. CIVA is pleased to present the first monographic exhibition honoring the life, work, and legacy of the Chinese-born Belgian architect Simone Guillissen-Hoa (1916–96). A proponent of modernist architecture, Guillissen-Hoa was one of the first women to establish her own architecture firm in Belgium. Her career and personal life constantly defied the barriers and conventions of gender, race, and religion. Her life spanned the major events of the twentieth century, from the early onset of the Chinese Revolution to the resistance in occupied Belgium and through postwar reconstruction. In the 1950s, she was a member of the Soroptimist Association, a women’s-rights advocacy organization, and in the 1970s, she became involved in the creation of the International Union of Women Architects. The exhibition both records her architectural projects and, through a wide array of archival materials, presents her reflections on architecture, her battles and more broadly, her professional and private life. By delving into Guillissen-Hoa’s artistic circle, comprised of figures such as Léon Spilliaert, Alfred Roth, Max Bill, Enrico Castellani, Tapta, Henry and Nele van de Velde, the exhibition explores the influences and collaborations that shaped her artistic and intellectual journey. A newly commissioned film by artists Eva Giolo and Aglaia Konrad is central to the exhibition, showcasing several of Guillissen-Hoa’s buildings and the utilization, adaptation, and translation of modernist forms and concepts. With works by: Max Bill, Enrico Castellani, Pierre Cordier, Jacques Dupuis, Eva Giolo and Aglaia Konrad, Mayou Iserentant, Alfred Roth, Josine Souweine, Léon Spilliaert, and Tapta. An extensive public program on feminism and architecture is being developed in collaboration with Apolline Vranken (researcher in residence at CIVA, 2023–24). With talks by Véronique Boone, Beatriz Colomina, Bianca Felicori, Florencia Fernández Cardoso, Jane Hall, Sol Pérez Martínez, Lucía C. Pérez Moreno, Léa-Catherine Szacka and many more. The exhibition marks the occasion of the donation of the Fonds Simone Guillissen-Hoa to CIVA Collections, Brussels. Curators: Silvia Franceschini and Yaron Pesztat

Liberia: Brussels Airlines Organizes Familiarisation Tour Of Aircraft And Airport Facilities For Members Of Travel Agencies in Liberia

Press Release

Monrovia – The local team of Brussels Airlines in Monrovia invited 14 sales representatives from travel agencies to visit the facilities of the Roberts International Airport and a long-haul aircraft (A330) of Brussels Airlines.

Initiated by the Manager of Brussels Airlines Liberia,  Marjolein Six, and organised along with Agency Supervisor Ama Harris and Deputy Agency Supervisor  Richann Talo. The objective of the tour was to show the customer experience when travelling into and out of Liberia to the sales agents.

By Press Release

The visit was organized in collaboration with the management of the Roberts International Airport (RIA), headed by Ms. Sandra Daye, head of the administration. RIA representatives Mr. James Lumas, Mr. Samuel Freeman and Mr. Albert Quaye accompanied the travel agents as well. Areas toured included the check-in hall, health check facility, immigration department, VIP lounge as well as the jet bridge and apron. All tours were conducted professionally and with strict adherence to the security protocol of the airport.

The sales representatives were then taken onto the tarmac where they were able to observe the approach of the aircraft. The agents were also able to board the aircraft and meet the entire Brussels Airlines crew, experience the services offered in the first-class cabin, and have a view of the cockpit as well as the rest of the cabin. The sales representatives were then treated to dinner and refreshments at the Farmington Hotel.

Ms. Oretha Kezekai of Love Travel Agency thanked the management of Brussels Airlines and RIA for the experience and all of the knowledge gained and encouraged both entities to continue to offer such learning opportunities.

We have booked 7 tickets from Brus. to Amman via Istanb. op 10/05 ( TK1944 and TK812) with 30kg free lugage. . 4 persons have a hardboardbox ( 20kg) as lugage and conteins a bicycle. Are there restrictions for the dimension of the box ? Can they carry a small handlugage ? Or are there other restrictions or payments ? Thank you , we have already send several times the same question, but still no answer.

There is no customer service in Brussels. No office open to public clients. Nobody answers any of the listed phones. Good luck with this service. they should spend more money on the client service than advertising the service on CNN. If I could avoid them in the future, I surely would.

Best of luck

SOMETHING YOU ALL HAVE TO KNOW We have been trying to make a small correction towards our booking purchased by “Vliegtickets.be”, a Belgian ticket supplier in the Benelux. After many phone calls, emails,…. etc, we have come to realise that Turkish Airlines does not allow any changes to tickets issued by “Vliegtickets.be”. It is about an extremely simple change in a family name with a type error. More specifically VERSCUEREN must be changed to VERSCUREN, … Both parties point the finger at each other and neither wants to comply. Conclusion –> no one takes consistent action to offer a solution –> the advice from both parties is –> cancel the entire order without any compensation (concerns tickets for 3 persons for a total amount of €1732) and book a new ticket less than 24 hours from departure date. Be warned for this malpractice, …. pure deception! We would like to receive some confirmation on the subject, understanding that this minor correction is really to simple to such behaviour and customer treatment. Hopefully the world took notice!!

@ Turkish Airlines –> Thank for your consideration!

With sincere regards
